5 out of 5 stars One of the best Elements book ever.......2007-10-13

At first glance I did not think much of this book but after reading it and following the projects I learn so much from it. I had been using Elements for over a year and was very comfortable with it but after reading this book I learned so many new techniques and ideas that makes it more enjoyable and easier to work with Elements. The instructions are clear and easy to follow (you have to know the basics of Elements though. Would not recommend it for a total beginner). The book comes with a CD with all the project images as well as some royalty-free images you can use in your own projects. I highly recommend this book for those who have been using Elements for a while but want to take their skills to the next level.

4 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 Maximum Performance.......2007-07-24

The book has good step by step directions. I did the first project Crop and Contrast. It helped my learn what the icons do, so for a start everything is okay. Some of the projects required time, which is also not a problem. I will get to them sooner or later. But I'm wondering if I need a hardware upgrade. My computer only has a read/write CD device, NOT a DVD, so I get an error when I load the DVD. I have a lot of my own pictures that I can work on, so I really don't need the extra pictures from the DVD. But I'm wondering if some controls/enhancements are loaded from the DVD, because I couldn't get the 'Print Preview' meun that is shown on page 68. I got other meuns, and tried other options, but I coldn't find what is shown on page 68. I know that the print drivers are different, because I have an Epson R800 printer. And, I understand what they are saying for that issue in the book. I will keep the book and look at other customers comments to see if other problems come up. I understand that programming software and writing a book sometimes don't match.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful book.......2007-07-14

I agree with previous reviewers that there were some errors in instructions and file names, etc., but for me it was more than balanced out by the useful information in the text. I have been playing with PSE5 for months and had no idea about much of its capacity for editing photos, creating composites, etc.
I very much enjoyed watching the included videos and trying the projects. If you enjoyed this book you would probably also enjoy the podcast Photoshop Elements Killer Tips from Photoshop Users Newsletter.

5 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 Maximum Performance.......2007-07-07

This latest book by Mark Galer "Photoshop Elements 5 Maximum Performance" is a real cracker. It is aimed at those who, having learnt the basics, want to go on and harness the full power of the software. Using the techniques that Mark Galer describes, this book will show you that you don't need the full version of Photoshop to achieve professional looking results - Elements has all the capability required. It certainly lives up to its title, with lots of clever workarounds, tips and tricks to satisfy the most demanding user. Mark has an easy to read, informative and friendly style, with a light sprinkling of humour now and then to relieve the technicalities. The book is divided into 3 parts: Optimise, Enhance and Montage, each with 8 projects. In the Optimise section the projects are: Crop and Correct, Levels, RAW files, Target Zones, Contrast, Hue and Saturation, Sharpening, and Printing. These projects provide the reader with an in-depth knowledge of a typical digital workflow. In the Enhance section the author goes on to various techniques such as Depth of field, Black and White, Low Key, Shafts of Light, Toning, Motion Blur, Glamour Portrait and Character Portrait. In the final section, Montage, there are projects covering: Replacing a Sky, Creative Montage, High Dynamic Range, Creative Text, Panoramas, Hair Transplant, Preserving Shadows and Displacement. All the projects are easy to follow, even though they are sometimes extremely involved. The accompanying DVD, which contains video tutorials for each of the projects, all the images used in the book and other resources is most useful. It's great to see a publisher like Focal Press producing consistently high quality photographic books that are not only attractively presented but also exceptional value. Full colour screenshots are used throughout the book as well as clear step-by-step instructions. In summary, anyone wanting to extract the maximum performance from Photoshop Elements should place this book on their shortlist

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've bought all year.......2006-11-11

The tools were why I bought the book -- having access to Curves and Color Balance alone would have been worth it, but there are a lot more -- masking tools, color separations, -- I am just starting to appreciate how powerful these tools are -- for example, before buying this book I didn't even understand why you even wanted to separate color and luminosity, but now I use that tool on every single image I process.

The book: the book is different from any other Photoshop book I've read. The most obvious difference is that it comes with neat Power Tools. A more subtle difference is that in addition to showing you how to manipulate images using Photoshop Elements (which most Photoshop books do, or should), it also aims to deepen your understanding of your images and controlling those images using manipulation-by-Elements. For example, he walks you through a somewhat complicated procedure of making masks to isolate mid-tone colors in your image-- there's a Power Tool to do it, but if you go through the entire procedure you will learn a lot more about how your image is put together. Not to mention that it was a revelation to me that you could have that much CONTROL!

Because he aims to teach you about images and how to get the best image possible, as well as a good order in which to correct images, the book is sequential. Most Photoshop books I've seen can basically be read in any order, but this builds on things he's taught in previous chapters: for example, learning about tone in the earlier chapters is essential for understanding color manipulation in the later chapters. As part of this flow, there's information not only on digital manipulation but also on printing, which is an essential part of the process, which made me very happy. Just his (elementary?) explanation of the dpi/ppi/lpi needed for various outputs and how well you can print various pixel-size images has been really useful for me to have at my fingerprints, not even to mention the calibration tool noted by another review.

On the negative side: as someone who predominately uses Elements for retouching digital photographs, I didn't find the sections on e.g. animation all that useful. I would have much preferred to see more about calculations, which I thought could definitely have been given more space, being such a complex subject. There are a fair number of typos, though it's usually pretty easy to figure out what the right thing ought to be, and I understand his website has errata. Minor issue: I had a hard time installing the tools, and had to go to the website delineated in the book to troubleshoot. (Turned out it was for some reason having a hard time with my external hard drive; once I unplugged it, it was fine.)

I would strongly recommend NOT expecting this to be your only photoshop elements book (unless you are already an image manipulation guru, maybe). I personally have Photoshop Elements 2 for Dummies from a local book sale as well, and had read the whole thing and understood how everything worked in it before tackling this one-- I would've been lost if I'd tried to do it in the other order. I still refer to Dummies above this book when I want to know quickly how to do something simple or want to know what some random special effect does, neither of which are the purposes of this book.

This book gives back to you what you put into it; the more you try to understand what is really going on, the more you will get out of it. To me, this is the hallmark of a great book; I've reread it twice already and am still learning more. To others, it may not be what you are looking for, particularly if you want quick recipes or quick fixes. If you've read my examples above and you're thinking, "Gosh, that sounds like it might be sort of dense... but worth it to really understand images and controlling images better," this book may be perfect for you, as it was for me. If you're thinking, "Nuts, I just want a couple of auto-buttons to press to get cool effects or quickly fix everything," this book is not for you.

But if you have Elements 2 and are even THINKING of upgrading to full Photoshop (which I was), get this book first!

3 out of 5 stars Maybe Later.......2005-08-05

After five nights of really trying so hard to get through this book...and I did try, I finally decided I was so lost it was time to quit and try some other book. I know I am not at the level I want to be in Elements, but just going through steps that make no sense with this book finally got to where it was not worth the effort. I'm putting this book on the shelf and finding one that doesn't assume I know the steps he leaves out. I'm very dissappointed because I really need to know this stuff :(((

2 out of 5 stars Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2.......2005-05-24

First must say all the raves you see are from professionals that have used other systems and maybe good friends of the author, as some of the reviews said, mistakes, no clear definition of way to go, confusing, believe the author once sent me an answer to a question stating he has condensed a book of 950 pages into this, Well unless your an photographic, or layout person, this book too confusing for someone starting out, I would not recommend this book to first timers

5 out of 5 stars Full of info but definitely a "college level" course.......2005-03-28

When I first read this book I was overwhelmed by the information and have had to struggle through all of the technical work. There is so much to learn, and much of it is technical. That said, Mr. Lynch goes out of his way to help his readers, and includes extra tools on his website as well as a forum. The extra tools alone pay for the book - he includes Curves and demonstrates how valuable this is. He also has tools to give you great photo frames, etc, with a few quick moves. If you are willing to put in hours learning to achieve his results you will be very happy with this book. If you simply wish a basic beginning book on Elements this is NOT the book for you. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to be proficient with Elements 2. I am going to buy the Elements 3 book.

5 out of 5 stars Praise.......2004-09-27

I have nothing but praise for this densely-packed book. Seek and ye shall find! The information level is as comprehensive as one could wish: Beware though, very few empty words, read carefully! Providing the hidden elements for Photoshop Elements users is an invaluable attribute.Use of these tools brings us into the realm of the full-fledged Photoshop. Thanks, Richard Lynch!

5 out of 5 stars Sheading new light on Illustrator.......2004-09-22

I hardly ever buy books on software because they are all hard to read and follow. This book intrigued me because I am coming from an extensive print background trying to venture into web design. Who knew the program that I use on a daily basis had such web design power? This book is awesome, it's set up in a clear, easy to follow way and the author is extremely knowledgable in the ways of Illustrator. Pick up this book now!

5 out of 5 stars Illustrator CS: Not Just For Print Anymore.......2004-02-23

Adobe Illustrator is a highly regarded professional software for creating digital artwork. Over the years Illustrator's capabilities have been closely identified with print publishing, where the application's high quality precise vector line-art can be scaled up or down in size and not change its resolution. It turns out there's far more uses for Illustrator than just print work. Adobe has been steadily adding features in its last three versions that make Illustrator a very valuable tool for creating Web graphics.

"The Hidden Power of Illustrator CS: Web Graphics Techniques", by author Steve Kurth, focuses on many features that Adobe has bestowed to its latest version of Illustrator. What the book does very well is elaborate on important Web graphics features that Adobe sparingly describes in its Illustrator CS users manual, or omits all together.

Prior to reading "The Hidden Power of Illustrator CS: Web Graphics Techniques" I've been creating navigation buttons, banners, and most other Web page visual components in PhotoShop. If I've needed to slice a graphic or create a button roll-over effect, I have relied on PhotoShop's integrated companion ImageReady. Thanks to this book I'm now much better informed about what Illustrator CS can offer, and it's going to change the way I create Web graphics.

I wouldn't recommend this book for the person who hasn't spent some time using Adobe Illustrator. The author attempts to address many of the application's basic features in the first two chapters. However, it's not going to be adequate for beginners, although users already experienced with Macromedia FreeHand or CorelDraw may find these two chapters quite useful for understanding and adapting their acquired knowledge into effectively using Illustrator CS.

Chapter Three begins explaining what makes Illustrator CS such a great tool for creating Web graphics. The author, Steve Kurth, has more than 10 years experience as a graphics professional. His "how-to's" with Illustrator CS are peppered with explanations of time-saving techniques for increasing workflow productivity when creating Web graphics with Adobe Illustrator. This is particularly the case in chapters five and six "Preparing The Work Environment" and "Preparing Single Graphics".

In Chapter Eight, "Creating Complete Pages", Steve Kurth explains and shows (with sample screen shots) how an entire Web page can be an Illustrator graphic sliced into sections that lessen the apparent wait of screen loading for dial-up users. He also explains how links can be created with specific bits of HTML code embedded into Illustrator Web graphics. Additionally, there are good explanations and examples throughout the chapter explaining how important Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) embedded code can be for precise placement and alignment of graphics in a Web page (better than HTML code instructions), and for creating fancy functional items such as drop-down menus.

With Adobe having given Illustrator CS 3-D graphics creation abilities, the possibilities for making sophisticated Web animations are exciting. Chapter Nine provides some easy-to-follow examples that certainly fueled a number of animation ideas I will be trying. Sequential frames created in Illustrator layers can be exported as a series of GIF graphics, or they can be exported to Macromedia Flash, Adobe AfterEffects or LiveMotion to create quick-loading vector graphics animations.

Chapter Ten is devoted to explaining the features, advantages, and the hopes for the Scaled Vector Graphics (SVG) format. Similar to SWF Flash files, SVG is also a quick-loading vector format that displays well in Web browsers-as long as you have the free plug-in that must be downloaded from Adobe and installed. Unlike the proprietary Flash format, SVG is an open standard. The descriptions given of SVG makes it seem considerably more versatile for website designers than SWF. The Flash plug-in, however, was introduced well before SVG and now enjoys a much larger market share. SVG's ultimate success (and survival) may hinge on developers writing future versions of Web browsers that will natively display the SVG format the way they currently support JPEG, GIF, and PNG.

"The Hidden Power of Illustrator CS: Web Graphics Techniques" is a treasure of information. If you use Illustrator and have not moved up to CS (v. 11), the book will likely motivate an upgrade.

5 out of 5 stars Good - and Not Just Web Stuff.......2004-02-20

I got this book even though I already know Illustrator. I am a print designer and I wanted to learn web stuff, too. There was plenty of that, and current stuff too. A lot of books on web graphics were written 4 years ago and a lot has changed. This book was up-todate and pertintent. It was complete and easy-to -read.

The part that came as a surprise is that I learned a lot I didn't know about Illustrator in general while reading it. I was surprised at that. I especially liked the animation section. A good book for any Illustrator user.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book about Illustrator for web.......2004-02-10

This book was a real eye opener for me. I love Illustrator, and I've been using it for many years, but never realized it has such practical application for web design. Steve Kurth gives practical examples of ways to make your workflow more productive, and his technical expertise in Illustrator is unsurpassed.

Kurth presents a comprehensive training course in the efficient use of Illustrator and aspects that especially apply to web creation. The "Save for Web Reference" gave an excellent overview of file formats and optimizing for web.

Some features were new to me, such as exporting to CSS layers for creating motion animation and more complex design effects. Pixel dimensions when transferring art to GoLive and Dreamweaver was a very useful reference. I found the detailed color discussion most informative.

In the section on creating browser templates. Steve Kurth walks us through constructing an Illustrator template for creating a full web page, something I had never thought of doing before.

All in all, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in fully and efficiently using Illustrator to design for web. It will definitely increase your production knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Express instructions, screenshots, tutorials, & more.......2004-01-12

Express instructions, screenshots, tutorials for advanced web tools, instructions for building one's own page, and so much more utilizing Illustrator CS software fill the pages of this resourceful and easy-to-follow instructional from cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Best in a long while.......2001-06-01

A collection of short stories, _Hidden Years_ fills in some missing spots in the storyline, mostly from the time period before the 'Shards'and Kings of the Broken Wheel timeline. It was really nice to see that a story could indeed be covered in the equivalent of one issue of a comic book. My favorites are the story depicted on the cover and the origin story for Skywise. No spoilers here, just go out and get it.

5 out of 5 stars The most spectacular of all Elfquest graphic novels!.......2000-10-16

Wendy is arguably the best comic book artist of our time, and this little gem has got to be her greatest work ever. This is the very first book by the Pinis that I bought. (Which may I recommend that you don't get this first. You will be very confused, even though the stories are great in themselves.) This one book started the Elf-mania in my family. Now, I buy all of them, even the off-the-wall side stories that are more humorous than anything (see "New Blood" and "Worldpool"). It's really great artwork and rich color are the best. And Strongbow is a heartthrob.;)

5 out of 5 stars Perfect 10.......2000-06-01

Wendy Pini has certainly outdone herself! Her artwork has always been versatile, changing to fit the mood of the story. In this graphic novel, she used vivid watercolors to tell the tale. It's amazing! The stories are also superb, in the honored tradition of Elfquest. My favorite story is the one about Tyleet and her adopted human cub, Little Patch. Wendy Pini is definetly my favorite artist! :)

5 out of 5 stars The Pinis are back in a great, flaring nova!.......2000-04-09

In a slightly smaller format than the original paperback volumes, the Elfquest tales that occurred between the great espiodes of the elfin adventures on The World of Two Moons are all presented in full, glaring colors that really blinds your eyes which are more accustomed to the gentler tones of the colorized comic-book collections. Here you meet Strongbow and his wolffriend, Kyavek and her winged boyfriend, Ember and her coming-of-age discoveries, Tyleet and her foster kid, and Skywise and his ill-fated parents. Personally, I feel that the gentle little Tyleet had inherited her mother's child-hunger, so she had a chance to fulfill her aching maternal instincts with an abandoned infant from a nearby human camp. Pretty sappy, in my opinion. But all the Elfquest fans get to unlock even more mysteries about their most favorite elfin characters as well as color-saturated new stories to boot!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing collection of emotional stories about Elfquest!.......1999-06-18

This compelling book contaning 5 of Wendy and Richard Pini's Hidden Years comic books. Which in my opinion are well thought, written, and drawn. These stories can make you cry, and they can help you understand the mysterious world of Elfquest, which few know but love. This must be at the top of every Elfquest lover's list, for it is a very very good book.

Required Reading for Serious Photoshop Users

Photoshop is a powerful tool created for those with demanding image-processing needs. If you are an experienced user or a professional who wants to take advantage of the real power that lies inside Photoshop, this is the book that shows you how to tap the source.

The Hidden Power of Photoshop CS takes a rigorously image-focused approach starting with exercises to help you view images in terms of color and tone components. This is not just theory, but a set of practical techniques you can use to separate, modify, and recombine any image. This perspective provides an essential foundation for your work. Your guide and mentor, Richard Lynch, follows through with practical information on using Photoshop's most advanced tools for everyday imaging tasks. Finding these often obscure features is half the trick; understanding what they're actually for and how they work is the other. Here's just a little of what you'll learn:

4 out of 5 stars Hidden Power of Photoshop CS.......2004-10-06

Since I just reviewed Photoshop CS Complete Course I thought that this book would flow from the basics to the more advanced features in CS, and hopefully give more insight into some of the new tools in Photoshop CS. This book is broken down into six major parts with nine chapters covering: Image Color, Altering Image Objects, Creating Objects, Photo-realism and Illustration. The book also comes with a tutorial CD in the back that corresponds to the different chapters plus is has a bonus selection.

Part one; chapters 1&2: Covers tone, color correction and separation. You get more in depth knowledge of curves, using channels and correcting specific colors. This may explain why some of your images may not output to your printer in comparison to what you see on the screen. Lesson learned make sure to calibrate your monitor. Chapter two covers color separations. You learn how to adjust each color separately. Being able to adjust each color separately gives you the control over taking your image from flat to it's full dynamic color range. You also learn how to create duo-tones, and how to separate CMYK color both manually and the automated way.

Part two; chapters 3&4: Covers altering image objects. The cloning tool & I have been friends forever. It's one of the tools that I use extensively with many of my photos with live models to cover blemishes and other unsightly marks on the face and hands area. Ch 3 covers the use of the cloning tool, healing brush and the patch tool. While using masks can be a bit frustrating, using a mask does help with some very time consuming modifications you might need to make to an image. This tweaking can make an otherwise flat image or over saturated image much closer to what you visualized. Ch four covers correction filters. We've all had noise in our images, noise is akin to grain in film sometimes a little bit is acceptable and other times it can really sink an image. In this chapter you learn how to smooth out color noise and tone.

Part three; chapters 5&6: Covers shaping objects, vectors and illustrations. Ch five deals with shaping objects, like buttons for a website, it shows how light and shadows give these objects depth. I really loved creating the seamless textures and tiling backgrounds segment. In my photography business it's "Senior" time and making my own customized graffiti wall is proving to be a neat choice for some of my clients. I am going to spend more time playing with the jigsaw puzzle component. Making an object from scratch shows why graphic artists get so much money. It's a very time consuming endeavor and you realize that those already designed graphics have a lot involved. Ch six covers vectors and illustrations. I have used Illustrator in the past and I really liked being able to make something small and then blow it up to the size of my desk and not lose any of the quality. You get a practical approach to building your own object, it might make some people want to start using Illustrator. This chapter also covers converting pixel images to vectors.

Part four; chapters 7&8: Deals with image output options and creating images for the web with Photoshop and ImageReady. Ch seven covers printing for at home and a printing service. Of course at home you could just reprint if it doesn't look right, with a printing service you need to have all of your settings done prior or your results may not match what you have in mind. There is usually more coordination between the user and printer to get all of the information and formatting. Not all printers are created the same: Laser, ink-jet and dye sub all have very different looks and feel to them. Make sure you know how your paper and the printing process you choose will interact with each other. Ch eight covers ImageReady. I haven't really used this program yet. However since it can create animated effects that will probably be the next program I start looking for more info on. You start using actions with this chapter. You learn how to make a complex and simple animation.

Part five; chapter 9: Deals with creating, editing and using actions. Let me tell you from a person that has had to resize and put my logo on thousands of images this is a feature that I will be the mistress of shortly. I do use the automate feature to have my images resized for my website, but I still am manually putting my logo across the front of my images using PaintShop Pro. So I'm looking forward to being able to tell Photoshop have at it. This is a very underused and discussed feature of Photoshop I feel. Some of us do lots of repetitive tasks in Photoshop and this baby needs to start earning it's keep more.

I do have a confession to make about this book. I am a reader and manual person, give me a book and I'm a happy camper. This book gave me a headache at times, I had to back track on some of the step-by-step instructions because they left something out or told you to turn something on or off later on during the steps. The book is in black & white except for the middle pages. Now I don't need color photos to make me happy but it certainly lets you know right off the bat if you are on the right track or not.

While the book has lots of knowledge it was at times confusing. You can't really skip around in this book many of the chapters make mention of some step you made in another chapter then you have to hunt for it and try to figure out how it fits into your current chapter. I had to put the book down and pick it back up after my brain had some time to process what it was I just read. Lot of information but you have to put aside some serious time if you want to master these secrets.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars His work is always great.......2007-08-31

His book takes a different slant than the other Elements books and it really applies not just to version 4--although the goodies that come with it can only be loaded in version 4. I have 4 and 5 and so far, I just have NOT had luck installing actions. The files seem to be in the right place, but the editor will not pick them up. There must be something I don't know. Anyway, anyone that wants to know good information about Photoshop Elements 4 should get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Sqeeze the Most out of PE4.......2007-03-17

This book is an in depth exploration of a how to use the Photoshop Elements digital darkroom for correcting images. You will not only learn sophisticated techniques, but also gain an understanding of what a digital image is and the components that make up an image. Based on the principal that "knowledge is power", the author empowers you by providing you with a deep understanding of how and why techniques work. A definite must for the serious digital photographer.

3 out of 5 stars Hidden Power for students of photo editing.......2007-01-08

Hidden Power was too deep for me, it may best be used as a textbook for a formal class on Photoshop Elements.
It sits on a bookshelf with Photoshop Elements Classroom In A Book by Adobe and some other books that I'm saving to read when I'm immobilized with broken legs and I have lots of time to spend reading.
My interest in buying this book was it's advertisement stating it has a CD that will add Curves functions to PS4. I couldn't get it to work.
If editing photos is a hobby and not your profession, I found the books Easy Photoshop Elements and 50 Fast Digital Photo Techniques with Photoshop Elements to be the fastest and easiest way to learn editing techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its title.......2006-07-18

It's easy to come up with seductive titles for image editing books, purporting to help you "Master" the topic or offer a "missing" manual. But when you get right down to it, most of the books just offer the same old basic information.

This is one title that lives up to its title. It's an advanced book that does provide you with information about hidden features, undocumented capabilities, and things you never thought of doing with Photoshop Elements 4. As the program itself is based on Photoshop CS, there are lots of things to reveal, and Lynch does a good job of presenting them in a clear and concise way.

5 out of 5 stars Top of the bill !!.......2006-07-15

As a "collectionner" of the best Photoshop books on the market I must recommend this excellent book from Richard Lynch to all the digital photographers among us.Other reviewers explained the content of the book in detail so I won't do the same,I can only agree their comments!
This book is not for beginners(try some others like Donna Bakers'unofficial guide to PHEL4 or the books from Philip Andrews-see my listmania list)
But if you want to understand how "digital photography" sees the real world and how a camera or a scanner tranlate all what you see in the digital format then this book is for you.
Lynch is a real PRO and takes the patience to explain ALL the hidden secrets behind this tremendous Adobe's software.
This is a cheap investment for YEARS believe me;you'll learn on your own pace the multiple facets of "seeing images" like a photographer and by following the exercises and explanations of the 11 chapters (take your time to re-read from time to time and practice,practice...)you NEVER take photos the same way you did before!
The greatest bonus is the companion cd with all the hidden tools(above 100 and the images used in the book).
Richard Lynch has given us an enormous homework to do but it's worth more than any training course that costs you a hundred of bucks!
Terrific, awesome, well explained,I can't find words enough to recommend this book.
Before you run to your local store learn the basics and then...hurry up to acquire this book before it's sold out.
If you won't take the necessary time to read it to understand the magic of tones, luminosity, colors, levels, gradients, masks and other effects or you'll satisfied with the "automatated corrections "in the software don't waste your time and be happy with your actual knowledge.Great job Richard and ...thanks!!!!

Rocketo is like no other book on the shelf. Every new issue seems to brings new races, characters, locations, etc without ever feeling like its forced. And as such, its one of the few books that even in trade format you read one issue a day and still feel your reading a whole adventure (each issue is 32 pages without ads), thats how much is packed in every chapter. "bang for your buck" indeed.

This volume wraps up the first of four proposed "books" of the adventures of Rocketo.

Frank Espinosa is quite possibly the Jack Kirby of our generation.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing.......2007-03-17

Though it seems like hot ninjas and yaoi should be a recipe for one yummy manga, SHINOBU KOKORO: HIDDEN HEART leaves a reader's appetite less than satisfied.

The book is a collection of stories that focus on a school of sorts for young wannabe ninjas. The sensei's got a thing for his pupil, and through various 'training sessions' that revolve more around having sex than learning anything else, this certainly isn't a typical dojo! But the stories suffer from terribly weak plots, uninteresting dialog and artwork that looks pretty in some panels and scratchy/coarse in most. I'm sensing the mangaka might have been rushed to meet a few deadlines during the initial serialized release of this manga in Japan.

There are some redeeming qualities, however, the most important one being the abundance of love scenes! For a quick yaoi fix, SHINOBU does it's job nicely. But for collectors who would rather save their hard-earned cash for more worthwhile reads, skip it.

Re-read-ability for this manga is a "4", meaning I probably won't pick it up again, but would give away to a friend if s/he were interested.

3 out of 5 stars Hot Sex, Scant Plot.......2007-03-06

First of all, I have to say that, as the title indicates, there are a lot of sex scenes in here. Pretty hot ones, too. And it's about the most uncensored I've ever seen in a yaoi manga.

However, the plot is....let's call it lacking.

By the way, this is spoilers galore down here.

Really. I spoil everything.

I'm serious.

Story one: Ninja-in-training+Ninja master. This arc is split into two stories. Part One basically consists of secks, love confession, and more secks. Story Two is basically sex in a schoolboy outfit. I cannot stress how ridiculously everything that happens in the story is obviously there for the sole purpose of instigating sex.

Story two: Two ninjas. Confession, sex. One falls off a mountain. Now this would be a good plot twist, if the other ninja didn't find him about two pages later completely unharmed. Sex ensues

Story three: Boy and Snow Spirit. It's never specified how young this boy is, but it's not so young as to give readers the icks. Some may call this shota, I personally don't. This story isn't half-bad. VERY fluffy, romancey, never any conflict to speak of, never any plot to speak of for that matter.

If you're looking for some quick hot sex fix, go for this. But be warned. I count myself as somebody who will overlook some plot gaps for a good romance. But this, I found myself rolling my eyes at. Good for hot yaoi, bad for good plot.

5 out of 5 stars My first Yaoi.......2007-02-09

I'm surprise i even picked this up one day. but ever since i got it, i've become hooked on Yaoi. My guy friends run away when i even say the word....and my best friends giggle as they look at the books with me.

I LOVED this. Nice cute couples and stories, not to mention nice art and sexy scenes. The only problem i had with it is that the stories are short yes....but...a little too short. I like Yaoi series more then collections of short stories, but overall i loved this manga!

5 out of 5 stars Very sweet plot and beautiful art!.......2006-05-01

I really like this yaoi novel because there are three diff stories in one. The art is simply amazing, a must have for a yaoi fan!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Insider's Secrets to Photoshop Elements.......2007-01-04

This is a well written book on Photoshop Elements. It engages the reader and goes well beyond basic skills and informaion. Richard Lynch is a master not only in the use of PhotoShop and it's smaller sibling, PhotoShop Elements, but he is equally skilled as a communicator and illustrator of concepts. The CD that comes with the book adds features to PhotoShop Elements which boost the usefullness of the basic software and helpful excercises that enable the user to build skills.

    Highly Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars A Powerful Tool for Digital Workflow and Image Enhancement.......2005-08-25

Richard Lynch has provided a remarkable add on to Adobe Photoshop Elements 3. For those familiar with Elements 3's predecessors, the suite of 60 additional tools is quite a handy dividend. But, Lynch did not stop there. Indeed, in several hundred pages of detailed tutorials, the novice jumps into swiftwater whereas the intermediate is smoothly led to advanced manipulation of digital images.

After you load CD tools, you'll find Hidden Power becomes a well-thumbed manual. Lynch approaches tutorials with a simple beginning, but quickly advances to detailed flow. His expertise as a knowledgeable Photoshop user is quite apparent. Working with tone, contrast, and color, he covers General Color Correction, Applying Levels and Curves, Specific Color Enhancement, and Altering Composition in about 200 pages.

The chapter on specific color enhancement is a doozy. Lynch prepares you to consider individual pixels where tone, contrast, and color can be adjusted. From Saturation Masking, he moves to Adjusting Color Balance, History Brush Application, then Calculations and Channel Mixing.

Working diligently through Lynch's tutorials, you become extremely familiar with both the Styles and Effects and the Layers capabilities. Some tutorials have as many as 25 individual steps to uniquely show the 'real' Photoshop path to your objective. You'll return repeatedly to see how he did this or that. But Lynch didn't stop there either. After showing you the individual step breakdown, in some unique tools, he provides you with a series of simpler steps such as those used to break out RGB component's for specific color enhancement.

Elements 3 lacks the familiar batch process operating of Actions Photoshop normally provides. This is a crucial step, since with Elements you can't record actions. Without actions, some of these techniques would simply be impractical.

After Hidden Power was released, Lynch provided actions in a white paper and downloadable capability at his web site. Unfortunately, many older Photoshop actions are not able to be transformed to Elements 3.

Lynch encourages every user to communicate with him regarding Hidden Power. He moderates an Elements 3 segment of RetouchPRO forum.

The novice must not be faint of heart or approach to learning and using Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 3. At is roughly 10% price point equivalent, considering everyone has a sharp Photoshop learning curve, Hidden Power truly becomes a twin to Adobe's Photoshop Elements 3.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-08-23

This book provides great information on digital color reproduction and alteration. The book has many good examples for teaching techniques for digital photographic enhancement using Elements 3. The plug-ins are great! Well worth the $$ Best book I,ve found on digital imagery and Elements 3.

4 out of 5 stars Better than for Dummies.......2005-08-10

There are popular books on software titled for dummies . This book is for folks who are not dummies but really want to know how to use PhotoShop elements and don't want to go to the top and the high end. It is clearly written and the projects are easy to follow. And the hiddne power elevates the user from the canned enhancement built into elements. It make one into a very accomplished digitaler. Thanks to the Author who mabe should have called it Photoshop for sincere dilitantes.

    1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware.......2005-07-05

Richard Lynch, the author, states in the Introduction that "One of the most important parts of this book is the collection of Hidden Power tools provided on the CD. *** These Hidden Power tools will enable you to access additional tools for elements such as Curves or Color Balance, and they will condense some of the longer step-by-step procedures you learn in the book to clicks of the mouse. On May 31, John Wiley has acquired Sybex, the publisher of the book. Sybex apparently no longer supports The Hidden Powers CD on its website. I bought the book because of the CD. I will now buy Scott Kelby's recent book on Elements 3 and return this one. Amazon should warn its customers of this problem instead of letting them find out themselves and going to the trouble and cost of returning it.
