5 out of 5 stars Terrific Little Book.......2007-08-18

I too took a tree identification class at a state park some years ago and this was the official guide book. It's easy to use, laid out well and has many varieties of trees in it. With practice, you can get to the point where you know what they look like by sight without having to resort to the book.

If you're a novice, get this book. It's inexpensive and offers you a great deal!

4 out of 5 stars finding trees..........2006-11-10

...is much easier with this manual. Following the criteria to identify each tree is sometimes confusing, but you usually end up on the right page at least of the tree you're trying to identify; given that tree is a Northeast tree and it's not winter time. There's another manual for that.

5 out of 5 stars Tree Finder is the Best.......2006-11-10

I use this book to teach trees to people of all ages. I carry it with me on all camping trips plus a copy in my truck. The best part about it is to find a specific tree, say one of 6 different type of maples within just a couple pages. It helps teach the basics of how they classify the trees, also. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Tree Finder - excellent.......2006-11-05

This is an excellent, most handy pocket-sized resource for quick field identification of native American trees in the Mid-west.

3 out of 5 stars A good but not great little book.......2006-03-29

This book is helpful in identifying trees with clear distinctives in their leaves. I had trouble with evergreens whose needles didn't seem to fit the choices that were given. There needs to be more mention of cones, fruit, tree shape, etc. It is, however, small, convenient and helpful with many trees.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best fall books.......2007-09-08

As a former teacher I have shared many a books with classes. This one I promise will mesmerize children and delight adults as well. It is heartfelt, childlike, innocent, and captivating. I would recommend this book as a great gift book and a must have for your personal library.

5 out of 5 stars We love Fletcher.......2007-07-04

Originally got this book from the library and we loved it so much we went out and bought it. Fletcher is so adorable trying to keep the leaves on the tree. Sure to become a classic.

4 out of 5 stars A story about a young little fox who loved a tree........2007-01-21

I thought this was a nice book to read. It had 17 scenes to it. Many were just 1-page long. The text was pretty good, and the illustrations were excellent if watercolor images are your cup of tea.

The story is set in the late fall to early winter and is about a little fox named Fletcher who cares very much for a large tree. Apparently Fletcher is less than a year old because he doesn't know that trees normally lose their leaves in the fall season. He seems to think that when the leaves fall off that the tree is not doing too well.

The book will probably be a great tool to help enlighten a young child about seasons and how trees grow leaves in the spring and lose their leaves in the fall. I'm not sure the text makes us develop any great feeling for Fletcher. Nor do the pictures really stand out. Thus, it probably is not a book that kids will want read to them time and time again.

I would have liked the book better if the illustrations had been great drawings rather than mediocre watercolors. And I also would have liked to see the life of a tree featured for an entire year rather than just September to December or whatever. 4 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Kids will find the story of the changing seasons intriguing........2007-01-06

It's autumn and Fletcher's favorite tree is changing colors and losing its leaves, worrying him. All his plans to help his tree friend won't work and he sees the last leaf fall and faces a feeling of failure, despite what everyone tells him - until on the first day of winter his tree presents him with a big surprise. Kids will find the story of the changing seasons intriguing.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book -- love the art and the message!.......2007-01-04

This is a great book to teach the little ones about the change in seasons (from Fall to Winter). It also teaches about caring for others. My son loved it and the art is really beautiful. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF A KIND.......1999-11-03

What a pity that this fine book is currently out-of-print. It is the only book of its kind, drawing together the native arts of the entire Western Hemisphere by art form catagory: painting, architecture, pottery, sculpture, beadwork, literature, etc. The scope is enormous, from pre-Columbian times to the present, covering North, Central, and South America with amazing detail. Anyone interested in native art forms will find this book tops. It is high on my list of favorite books.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2004-03-05

"Leaves in Myth, Magic & Medicine" is a delightful book that will bring readers years of pleasure. Like nature itself, the magestic beauty contained within is revealed slowly in layers. More than just a beautiful picture book, the text for each leaf portrait is rich yet concise. "Leaves in Myth, Magic & Myth" is a wonderful monograph to give to naturalists, environmentalists, folklorists, herbalists, family or friends who want to widen their horizons while deepening their appreciation for trees.

5 out of 5 stars Truly unique.......2000-09-08

This original and unique book was written by an 87 year old retired librarian. Ms. Vitale devoted 30 years to researching and creating this wonderful portrait of leaves. The 110 leaf specimens are all grown in American soil. The author includes fascinating information on tree lore, medicine, botany and so much more. This book brought me hours of pleasure and is also a great reference book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest and love for trees and/or all aspects of nature.

5 out of 5 stars A True Work of Art!.......1999-12-30

Good Lord, this book is absolutely stunning! What a find! Getting this book as a holiday gift is indeed a good argument for writing an accurate self-description on one's wish list - I said I loved leaves and I got this amazing book which I never even knew existed. The ink autoprints are so finely detailed, it's hard to believe they are really printed off living leaves. Meeting the woman/artist/botanist who so lovingly (obviously) and painstakingly created these prints would be an honor and truly fascinating. This is a case of art imitating yet surpassing nature by making you really SEE and understand its wonder.

5 out of 5 stars Leaves surpasses expectations with its rich descriptions........1999-05-21

110 specimens are the result of Alice Vitale's life-long avocation and work. The leaf drawings are exquisite and each herb is delightfully presented with a smattering of folklore, origins, medicinal uses, quotes and poems. Some very obscure herbs are covered in this compendium.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful handprints of leaf forms & enchanting anecdotes.......1998-10-09

What do you do with a 4-hour layover in the Denver airport? Well, you browse the book shop and if you're lucky you find this gem on the shelf. The hand printed leaf forms are perfection in every way, and each page brings magical anecdotes about the plant forms, odd myths, medicinal uses, and sweet little graphics to enhance the overall feel of the book. From it's square hefty shape, right down to the dusting of soft green tones on the page edges, this book is a delight and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves and appreciates natural botanical forms and enjoys the unusual information this insightful writer has gathered over the years. In the very back on the dust jacket, there is a photo of the author, a lovely woman, who at age 87 declares this is her first book! I love owning this and have bought several copies for friends as gifts. At $20 plus some change here at Amazon.com you can't go wrong. A superb value!

I have this book in my preschool classroom, but it is not one that I read at storytime. We use it as a resource when one child begins to question how or why the leaves change color. It is a helpful resource for me as an adult to understand the process, yet in simple language and with pictures to make it interesting for children.

        Book Description

From the delicate new growth that emerges in springtime to jewel-toned fall foliage to winter's brown husks, leaves unfurl, mature, and wither in a life cycle that evokes our own. But a tree's leaves and the protective pods that cradle its seeds not only serve as metaphors for our lives: they actually sustain us. Each leaf plays an essential role, gathering nutrients for the tree and producing oxygen for the planet.

In Leaves & Pods, artist Josie Iselin celebrates the diversity and beauty of these transitory objects with lushly detailed portraits of foliage she has gathered throughout the seasons across the world. As in her previous book, Beach Stones, Iselin arranges found natural objects into striking images, which she produces on a flatbed scanner. In her introduction and captions, nature writer Mary Ellen Hannibal thoughtfully examines leaves and pods in all their variety, explaining why they look as they do and their essential role in supporting life on earth.

Both an art book and a botanical guide, Leaves & Pods reveals the splendor, complexity, and purpose of some of the most common objects in our natural world. This contemplation of nature combines aesthetic delight in familiar objects with scientific fact and philosophical wonder.
