Book Description
A new collection of eye-popping rarities from a defining visual stylist of the 1950s jazz era.
The Curiously Sinister Art of Jim Flora, following hot on the heels of 2004's The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora (which sold out within a matter of months, but which is being reprinted with this latest volume of Floriana) features a wide array of both his commercial work for prestigious record labels of the '40s and rare, personal work that he did solely for himself.
Flora was prolific in his commercial work; he created art privately in equal measureand often with more fiendish pleasure. His style is cartoonish, evoking childhood nostalgia and dereliction of adult responsibility. There are clowns and kitty cats, grinning faces and beaming suns. But Flora did not restrain his darker impulses. His montages are crammed with bullets and knives and fang-baring snakes. Muggers run amok, demons frolic with rouged harlots, and Flora's characters sufferthat is, are afflicted by the artist with severe disfigurement. The banal and the violent often coexist within inches of each other on the canvas. Figures from his burlesque-tinged absurdity "The Rape of the Stationmaster's Daughter" adorn the book cover.
There is also a wealth of 1940s Columbia Records printed matter exhibiting Flora's visual pranks; 1950s RCA Victor-era work; magazine illos, sketchbooks, and prints; 1930s Little Man Press-era drawings; paintings from all decades; photos, and personal keepsakes. All are abundantly represented in The Curiously Sinister Art. Flora's early 1940s musician portraits in Columbia bulletins are raucous and undignified, featuring piss-takes on such legends as Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, and Gene Krupa. Flora once said he "could not do likenesses"so he conjured outlandish caricatures. His exotic fauna defy logic and the laws of physics. We suspect he often leaned back from the drafting table, examined his work, and issued a macabre chuckle.
Much of the work in the book is light-heartedit's not all Flora 'rassling his demons. But even in his impish renderings, there's something vaguely unsettling in the nuances. His comic grotesqueries echoed, and in many cases foreshadowed, the 1950s Harvey Kurtzman-era MAD magazine, as well as the underground comix of the late 1960s.
When Flora died in 1998, his family gathered his artistic estate and secured it in a storage facility. In late 2005, the heirs allowed Chusid and Economon access to the vault. What they discovered were "lost works""lost" because fans of Flora's LP covers, kid-lit, and Mischievous Art offerings have never seen most of these eye-boggling treasures, which include paintings, watercolors, sketches, woodcuts and all manner of artistic genius.
Flora once said that all he wanted to do was "create a little piece of excitement." He overshot his goal with many of these works.

Beyond Mischievous.......2007-05-14
This book goes beyond the first Flora book, The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora. It's wilder, and has a lot of bizarre fine art works by Flora that have not been shown in public. His album covers (featured in the first book) were fun but mild-mannered compared to the reckless abandon on display in The Curiously Sinister Art. It's hard to believe that Flora is the same guy who created so many cuddly children's books in the 1960s and 1970s. The Curiously Sinister book is definitely for ADULTS, or perhaps for overgrown children with a wicked sense of humor.
The curiously fine sinister Art of Jim Flora.......2007-05-12
Not as instructive as the first one, but a very fine book for people who like the wickedly funny and different art of Jim Flora
Book Description
Best known for his barbed and brilliant art for The New Yorker, Saul Steinberg (1914–1999) did much more. He executed public murals, designed fabrics and stage sets, was an inventive collagist and printmaker, and turned his magic touch to the fields of painting, sculpture, advertising, and even wartime propaganda. This is the first comprehensive look at Steinberg’s extraordinary contribution to 20th-century art, which was that of a modern-day illuminator, putting word and image in play to create art that spoke to the eyes, and minds, of readers.
An introduction by poet Charles Simic tracks the origins of Steinberg’s darkly comic sensibility in the “Balkan bazaar” of his native Romania. Joel Smith shows how architectural training and an early rise to fame as a cartoonist in Fascist-era Milan honed the artist’s gift for subtle graphic invention, and explores why one of the most visible, prolific, potent, and cosmopolitan careers in postwar American art has so thoroughly evaded serious study. Tracing the evolving motives that underlie Steinberg’s multi-layered activity, this handsome volume also raises fundamental questions about the historiography of modernism and the vexed status of “the middlebrow avant-garde” in an age of museum-bound art.
Previously unseen sketches, documents, and printed matter from the artist’s papers illustrate the essay, career chronology, and entries for 120 objects featured in this important book.

Steinberg.......2007-03-11
This book sums up most of the best work of Saul Steinberg, and for those who like his graphics, an absolute "must have"
Inspiring, inventive........2007-02-22
The marvelous Saul Steinberg exhibition at the Morgan Library in NYC is almost too much to take in even if one devotes an entire afternoon. Unlike some art exhibitions, Saul Steinberg's work is full of references and verbal ques that make ones brain fire on all cylinders simlutaneously. That can be exhilarating, but also exhausting. Saul Steinberg, the book, allows one to take in the artists's work in smaller bites: indeed, you can dip into the book at any page and be well fed. Don't miss the exhibition. But then, make sure you get the book.
A Splendid Volume for Connoisseurs of Saul Steinberg.......2007-02-06
First, I must confess that I am predisposed to enjoying this book. I love everything about the man and his work. Over the past several years I've acquired fourteen volumes of Steinberg's art as well as other printed pieces. Before the internet this would have been almost impossible and very costly. My earliest recollection of art I had strong feelings about goes back to the late 1940's when I saw a series of drawings by Saul Steinberg in The New Yorker.
That being said, this catalog is one of the finest volumes of his work to date. It is a generously sized book at 10 x 12 inches, hardcover and 288 pages. It is printed on a matte coated paper which means the reproductions are excellent. The book is very well thought out. It begins with two illustrated essays. They are followed by the catalogue of the exhibition. This is followed by notes, chronologies and other information which illuminates Mr. Steinberg's career.
It is a very well designed book. The type choices and page formats make it quite easy to actually read. This is not always the case since the advent of computer composition. The catalogue section gives each work of art a two-page spread. The title, pictorial information and a brief commentary are on the left facing page and a reproduction is on the right facing page. The illustrations are large and accurate to the originals. For some art works there are extra illustrations below the commentary on the left facing page.
If you are intrigued about this artist, Saul Steinberg ILLUMINATIONS, is a must for your library. To round out your collection, consider purchasing STEINBERG AT THE NEW YORKER which was recently published and should still be available. If you are interested in seeing the actual exhibition, you should be able to find information online at the Saul Steinberg Foundation website.
Great overview of Steinberg's career, minus the New Yorker stuff.......2007-01-20
"A writer who draws," that's how Steinberg described himself, and that's what Joel Smith's explores in his great essay on Steinberg's life and art which accompanies the pieces from the ILLUMINATIONS show. If you're looking for Steinberg's New Yorker work, you won't find it here. (Buy the must-have Complete New Yorker on DVD and you'll have everything he ever published there!) But if you're looking for a good place to start on Steinberg, this is the book.

decoration.......2007-01-09
It presents recent collections from interesting designers from all over the world. It serves as a good introduction to some of them, so afterwards you can get to know each one's collection better. Good reviews, very nice images. And apart from that, a very nice book to use as a decoration for your office. : )
A look into the world of modern fashion design.......2006-01-22
This book is absolutely fabulous, there's no other way to say it. Whether you're looking for a gift for someone who simply loves fashion, or are someone who loves fabric and the art of fabric manipulation (which is generaly called clothing), this tome is an excellent resource for information on up-and-coming fashion and designers. As a textiles & apparel major I find this book to be a great source of inspiration, but the layout, the wealth of large beautiful photos, and the artistic design of the book itself would make it a great coffee table book. The book is also a great bargain on Amazon, I have seen it for sale in several stores for upwards of $90. If I could give it more than five stars I would!

Customer Reviews:
Great pictures, cute ideas, blah designs.......2007-04-17
I love to embroider. I look around for blanks all the time, and embroider them to death. So I have drooled over this book for a while. I finally bought it, and was hugely disappointed. The first few pages are a refresher course on embroidery. It talks about stabilizer, threads, even machines. It shows how to hoop, and basically is a short course in how to get set to embroider. Then you get to the projects. Each project shows you a blank (an piece of clothing that has no embroidery or designs on it already), and it shows you how to dress it up. There is probably something for everyone in the book. There is a sweater, a top, jeans, a few dresses, and much more. Some of the ideas are very unique and original. However, what I really wanted the book for was the designs. What a mistake! The designs are pretty boring, absolutely nothing special. I am very surprised, as Eileen Roche has such beautiful designs through Amazing Designs. Anyway, it was my error to get the book without seeing all the designs first.
One thing that was really excellent about the book is how the placement of the designs was explained. If you have a hard time knowing where to put designs, this is a good book for that. Just don't think you are getting a bunch of gorgeous designs.
A thoroughly 'user friendly' manual of projects and concepts.......2007-03-06

Customer Reviews:
A decent book.......2005-02-24
I liked West Coast rooms better. The rooms were more contemporary overall. East Coast rooms did have much more of a variety of styles. A little of something for everyone. They were well styled, nice photos. I wouldn't purchase this if I were looking for an instructional design book though.
No stodgy traditionalists here..........2000-05-29
I really enjoyed this book. Most east coast design that is not country in orgin is very traditional. This book features a very nice array of styles to choose from. More modern and hip designs are found with a smattering of the east coast thrown in...
Book Description
From a winning voice in fiction -- the author of My Favorite Mistake and Exes and Ohs -- comes a romantic comedy that will have you in stitches.
She's late for her life...
Becca Davis has always played it safe -- denying her passion for fashion design in a dead-end job and letting her pragmatic boyfriend (mastermind of the "Kevin Bradley Ten-Year Plan") make the tough decisions in life. Stunned into saying yes when Mr. Predictable springs a surprise proposal on her, Becca realizes that she's running out of time to turn her life around. She's only got one more chance to chase her dreams and no one -- not her control freak fiancé, not her dramaholic sisters, not her overprotective parents -- will talk her out of it.
He's right on time.
Terrified but determined, Becca breaks off her engagement, moves in with her sister in Los Angeles, and prepares to take the fashion world by storm. The reality of the Hollywood scene is much harsher than she anticipated -- lots of slamming doors, snooty clients, and double-crossing celebrity stylists -- but she won't give up. And while she's waiting for her big break, she meets Connor, a sexy risk-taker who's the polar opposite of her ex-fiancé. Is Becca ready for his all-or-nothing approach to love? Fashionably Late.......2007-08-01
I could not put the book down, I actually read it in a day and a half.
Funny and romantic.......2007-07-11
This an easy read. It's a funny romance. I found Becca very easy to like. This book is worth purchasing. Don't get me wrong... it's not the great American novel... just something fun to escape with. Enjoy.
A Great Book.......2007-01-07
As a mom of 3 boys, my life is diapers, practices and games and daily trips to store to restock what would take me a week to eat. Sometimes I just want to escape. I have found several writers who help transport me to another world. Beth Kendrick is wonderful. It is easy reading, you are laughing through the whole book. You really feel the main character. I also enjoyed her other book Ex's and Ohs.
Funnier than Bridget Jones.......2006-09-02
I laughed harder in this book than I did with the Bridget Jones' Diaries. If that doesn't speak volumes, I don't know what does. First, I read My Favorite Mistake which I couldn't put down and ended up reading in a DAY. Then I read Fashionable Late and didn't set it down until it was finished. I am SHOCKED that this book didn't receive 5 stars from everybody. I am an avid reader and am quite picky about my reading material. I will await and read anything that Beth Kendrick writes from here on out.
Kendrick's latest must-read.......2006-06-14
Becca is tired of playing it safe with her overbearing fiance Kevin (who outlined their "10-year plan" when they were dating). Now halfway into it, she feels suffocated and aspires to be a fashion designer. But Becca has always stood on the sidelines and let Kevin and her sisters Claire and Gayle run over her. When Kevin chooses the parcel of land as well as the design of their future home, Becca has had enough and decides to take a break to go to LA and pursue dreams.
Residing in newly married Claire's guesthouse, she immediately finds a job at a popular Hollywood eatery, giving her plenty of time to shop her portfolio around LA by day. She is immediately intrigued by the restaurant's owner Connor, a thrill-seeking adventurer who does not mix business with pleasure. The restaurant is a hotbed of Hollywood activity, and soon she has an appointment with a design house as well as stylist for Hollywood's "It" girl. Getting a new job leaves the door open for a relationship with Connor. But Becca learns the hard way that things are not always as they seem, and finds that the fashion industry can be as heartbreaking as a lover with a death wish.
Meanwhile, petulant, self-centered and snobby sister Claire is having marriage problems when her Hollywood power-broker husband does something ethical, then gets fired. With twins on the way, will they be forced to eat government cheese and shop at Big Lots? As her parents work with Kevin to attempt a reconciliation, what's a girl to do?
Written in first person, Kendrick's latest is filled with charismatic characters, witty banter, and some of the cheesiest pick up lines to grace the written page. Though a little scatter brained at times, Becca is an endearing character you can't help but root for. Kendrick has the uncanny ability to create lifelike characters using realistic dialogue that draws you in and holds your attention.
Book Description
Throughout time, people have been fascinated and bewitched by the pearl; its luster, purity, and perfection. It has been featured in jewelry since early civilization and has adorned kings and queens, first ladies, and movie stars. The power of pearls is their remarkable ability to bestow upon the wearer a sense of mystery, elegance, and grace. In contemporary fashion, the technical ability to create new pearl forms in an inexpensive manner has generated an excitement about possibilities of freshwater pearl jewelry. Pearls are not only available in classic round and glistening white form, but in a range of exotic and beautiful colors and shapes. The popularity of the pearl in fashion has never been greater. This is the first jewelry-making book focused on pearls - no longer only seen at church and weddings. The projects range from casual design to bohemian and classic styles, to unique signature pieces in contemporary styles. Chapters cover the development of pearls as a material, their care, proper stringing techniques, an illustrated techniques section, 16 projects and variations, plus a special section on creating jewelry for brides, mother of the bride, and as wedding party accessories and gifts.

Great Designs-KNOT enough Knotting Techniques..........2007-07-03
Great book if you are looking for spectacular design ideas, rudimentary bead/pearl stringing and jewelry making instructions with detailed pictures. But if you are an advanced jewelry designer/maker and are looking for the historical ways to string and especially knot pearls, then this is not the book to buy.
Three words in the title; Designer, Techniques and Classic made me think I had found a book that would teach me the multiple "Old Fashioned/Classic" ways to knot a string of pearls. What was offered was good instructions on how to use a "Modern" pearl knotting tool, and a suggestion to read the directions and watch the video that comes with the tool to learn how to knot pearls. No offense to the author or tool, but I thought a designer level book would offer lessons on the several other manual and I guess "Historically Corect", for lack of a better description, ways to knot pearls.
The author did such a good job with every other aspect of this book. I would say, for a beginner, this is an awesome Pearl Book! Simply for its many beautiful design ideas to spark the imagination this is also a great book and well worth the investment. I hope Amazon shares these comments with the Author so she can make a good book great by including the additional, traditional knotting techniques.
Making Designer freshwater Pearl Jewelry.......2007-02-08
I purchased this book for My Wife,She is Very Pleased with it.
Beautiful Designs.......2006-09-26
I was delighted to find this book. One look at the cover and a flip through the pages and i knew I had found the jewelry making book for me. I have been making jewelry for years and like to get new ideas. The designs in this book are beautiful! Even though the projects look easy enough for a beginner and don't require anything special, the ideas and final pieces of jewelry have me itching to get in my workroom, and i consider myself an advanced jewelry maker. The extra tips, suggestions and additional photographs are also great.
Book Description
The first novel in the Spa Girls Collection, She's All That focuses on Lilly Jacobs, a San Francisco fashion designer determined that her "bad hair" is the root source of her problems--but a nagging grandmother, a vixen boss, and well-meaning friends certainly aren't helping matters.
Customer Reviews:
Very easy read........2006-06-27
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Kristin Billerbeck's books. They are such an easy read as she makes you feel as though you are right in the story. I am just waiting for the newest Spa Girls book to be delivered. I am sure it will be every bit as good as the others. You will enjoy all of Kristin's books.
Boring.......2006-06-19
I was very disapointed with this book. The cover looked and sounded so entertaining, but I found it dull. Their wasn't much plot, and the three women were so worldly and superficial, even though they claimed to be born again Christians. I got so tired of all the references to money and power. I think the idea of three young ladies who have their own "therapy sessions" at the spa every couple mo. is a cute idea for a book, but the author just didn't write enough action scenes. I quit the book halfway through. I may finish it one of these days since it wasn't horrible, but right now I'd rather spend my time reading quality fiction. There is quality Christian fiction out there-check out my other reviews and lists.
Christian Chick Lit is Here!.......2006-06-05
I loved the Ashley Stockingdale series and was anxious to read more by Billerbeck.
This book is fun! Lilly is a mess, bad luck seems to follow her around but when she's not busy swooning over any guy with a Brit accent she's busy taking a hold of her out-of-control life.
Lilly's forgiveness is only that of a true Christian, now if she could just get a date rather than another "friend".
It's great to read books where *sex* isn't the only plot, putting love and God first. I just wish there was a little more references to our faith but otherwise this is great read with a few surprises and some laughs.
Bravo for Ms Billerbeck!.......2006-05-29
Having been somewhat disappointed with the third instalment of the Ashleigh Stockingdale series I have to admit that I didn't approach this book with great expectations.
They were well and truly exceeded.
In this new series Ms Billerbeck has created a set of characters who are real, relatable and believable. She has also come up with some classic one liners that I enjoyed so much I started quoting them to my friends!
Spritually wise it certainly isn't deep and meaningful book that will change your world but I certainly felt that Lilly's relationship with God and the way it was portrayed was refreshing and engaging.
I loved Lilly, loved She's All That and all very much looking forward to catching up with Morgan in the next instalment of the series.
Fun fun fun.......2006-03-23
I was anxious to read Ms. Billerbeck's new series after having enjoyed Ashley Stockingdale. I was not disappointed. The first Spa Girls book had me wishing I was a fashion designer myself. This was a fun, lighthearted book with a great Christian perspective. Thoroughly enjoyable-a great read for the beach or any day!
Book Description
While the viewer's eyes are trained on the actors, the production design sets the mood for the film. The design also subtly comments on the action and the characters, moves the plot forward and adds to its symbolic content.
The production design of 23 films of the 1980s and 1990s is analyzed here. The films are divided into five areas: realistic films set in the present day, stylized films (including horror) set in the present day, period films, period films that move through several decades, and science fiction and fantasy films. Among the movies analyzed are The Silence of the Lambs, She's Gotta Have It, The Fisher King, Ragtime, Barton Fink, Goodfellas, and Alien. The quality of the designs is assessed by a careful reading of the mise-en-scène. Often the designers' own words are used to describe the effects and the process involved in achieving them.

Romancejunkie.......2001-07-17
Another Catherine Palmer success! Another member of this quirky family was introduced. The suspese and romance mix was great! This showed the love of God can touch even the biggest skeptic.
Okay.......2001-04-08
I was really looking forward to reading this book, having already read the first two and it was a huge let down. The story seemed to drag out and I couldn't really get involved in the story line at all. The first book about Tillie and Graham was much better and was the best book of the whole series. I would still read Catherine Palmer books but, this is one that I would not read again. I would LOVE to read a book about Fiona Thornton though. I want to hear her story. Why she hides herself away etc.
A Touch of Betrayal.......2001-03-24
This was the first Catherine Palmer book I read and I loved it. It is a wonderful story full of adventure and romance. I found myself not wanting to put it down. Ms. Palmer brings the characters to life and you find yourself feeling a part of their world. The message of Christ is developed through the faith of the characters and the story shows how important a witness through example in all aspects of life can bring others to "surrender". If you like suspence, adventure, romance and an element of surprise - I highly recommend this book.
