Book Description
Painstakingly reproduced from a rare facsimile edition, this volume contains full-page decorations, portraits, illustrations, plus a sampling of textual leaves with exquisite calligraphy and ornamentation. The 32 full-color illustrations include the first image of Virgin and Child in a Western manuscript and early representations of Apocalyptic visionary symbols of the Evangelists.
Customer Reviews:
Worth the money but it could have been so much more.......2000-06-02
This book of color plates seems amazing, and almost is. However, the quality of the plates falls short of the mark. The colors are dull and faded, and the image resolution far lower than it should be. The Chi Rho page, probably the most beautiful page in the Book of Kells, shows almost none of the amazingly minute detail that it should. Other books--like the Thames & Hudson--show far more detail with more vivid colors than this. On the other hand, this book has larger pages than others, which is nice.
transcends time & religion.......1999-11-26
32 full color plates from one of the world's greatest books. Although it is Christian art, the Kells reflects centuries of preChristian style & mystery in its bestiary of cats & dragons, its peacock feathers, poses & intertwining lines. There is something in this art that transcends time & religion. The price is a bargain.

Customer Reviews:
A readable, informative overview.......2004-07-10
This extensively illustrated book tells general, interested readers as much about the origins and nature of different types of writing as most will want to know. The short, concise chapters, typically two pages long, range over subjects as diverse as Sumerian cuneiform and modern standardized signs for travelers. The author devotes particular attention to Egyptian hieroglyphs and Chinese characters, though he provides less adequate coverage of writing systems used on the Indian subcontinent. Throughout, he emphasizes the distinction between writing systems based on sounds (alphabets) and those using symbols to represent things or concepts. He makes the intriguing point that some written languages have mixed the two together.
Book Description
Practical archive of extraordinarily beautiful and decorative letters of the alphabet splendidly ornamented with geometric and curvilinear motifs interwoven with royal and saintly figures, mythical creatures, knights in battle, exquisite florals, and much more. A wonderful glimpse of the ancient art of manuscript illumination.
Customer Reviews:
Nicely put together!.......2007-09-07
This is especially helpful for letter-illuminating, though you need to know what you're doing because there are no guiding instructions.
Calligraphy book.......2007-09-02
I didn't get as much from this book as I'd hoped. It is beautifully illustrated.
Unexpected.......2007-05-14
This was not what I expected. The letters are back to back so you will need to make a copy of the page you want otherwise you cut into the letters on the back of the page
Book Description
Inside this invaluable sourcebook, there’s an in-depth analysis of color relationships and an introduction to a range of media, techniques, and other applications for adding hues, tints, and shades to calligraphy. Create exquisite backgrounds with watercolor washes, ink print, gild, make borders, form images from letters and so much more. Photographs illustrate and describe each method.
Customer Reviews:
Get out your paper, paints and pens!.......1998-11-06
Aside from the wonderful full color pictures, this book provides a step by step guide to projects, an introduction to mediums and a great source of inspiration to make a trip to your local art supply store. The simple instructions and advice encourages you to explore beyond just the black ink realm of calligraphy. However if you're a beginner and you're looking for a how-to guide to writing calligraphy, then it's best to look elsewhere. This book is geared for a user who already has a background in calligraphy but looking to "try something new & colorful".

Novelist, essayist, and cultural critic Albert Murray--a classmate of Ralph Ellison at Tuskegee University--has spent his whole life affirming the positive aspects of Afro-American culture while rejecting the sociologically flawed assumptions of white America. These essays from the '60s and '70s attack what he called the "social science fiction" propagated by Marxist theorists, black activists, sociologists, and politicians. The book's goal, he wrote, was "to expose the incompetence and consequent impracticality of people who are regarded as intellectuals but are guided by racial bias rather than reason based on scholarly insight." For Murray, black culture derives from the American South; is blues-based in its oral, literary, and musical traditions; and is heroic in its eternal attempts to affirm the principles set down in the Constitution. With the skill of a jazz pianist, Murray lays down some cool intellectual chords that drown out the bleak dissonances of black life articulated in mainstream culture to create a black, brown, and beige--and brilliantly American--composition of his own. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, 30yrs later it's still relevant.......2001-01-18
I totally enjoyed the spirit of this book. I might disagree with a few points and admit that Murry at times overstates to make a point. But he is allowed to signify! I disagree with the person from pittsburgh. I think Murry can be a skilled polemicist/intellectual himself, but think he'd rather not. But the book was speaking to polemicist and intellectuals in their terms. That's the whole point. They gotten so caught up in their rhetoric that they've forgotten how to see or speak about the human experience in any other terms. It is positive, the book continues to add a freshness and bounce to the stale social science dialogue about race, culture and particularly Blacks. As he says 'we (blacks) can't afford to be reduced to oppression and repression'. Murry would probably rather chop it up at a jazz bar or barber shop. That's why he gets to signify.
Still good to the last drop.......2000-06-28
Although it's now 30 years old, Albert Murray's debut has hardly aged a day, and his potshotting at the shallow pieties of sociology remains all too relevant. The reader from Pittsburgh seems concerned that Murray isn't positive enough. But I think his central thesis--that we are all omni-Americans, sharing a hybrid, black-and-white culture--is one of the most hopeful things to come down the pike since Whitman hung up his versifying shoes. Add to that the fact that Murray is funny (not an easy thing to be when you're taking Daniel Patrick Moynihan down a peg) and you've got an essential volume on your hands. Three cheers for Da Capo for keeping this in print!
Makes some points, but disappointing.......1998-10-26
Murray condemns both polemic and intellectuals yet he only manages to look at things from an intellectualist viewpoint when he discusses things in-depth and he seems very skilled as a polemicist himself. Very critical of anyone except those with a similar background, including many shots at social scientists, northerners and whites as well as Murray's fellow writers even. Hardly a positive work, despite the subtitle "Some Alternatives to the Folklore of White Supremacy" which makes you think it will be more than it is.
Book Description
'The nature of colour should change - no longer just a thin layer of change, but something that genuinely alters perception' - this stipulation of Rem Koolhaas is echoed by the world famous architects and designers Alessandro Mendini and Norman Foster. In this volume, they present between them a total of 90 colours - each covering half a page - accompanied by comments on the background, the significance and the applications of the colours. Studies of colours from each office form the basis of this book, and were previously only available in extravagant individual editions. With this comprehensive and consistent presentation of the varying approaches to colour, we have a compendium which shows the wide use of colour in today's technologically advanced architecture with its modern, post-modern and deconstructive orientation. The range of examples of the colours in practice includes load-bearing structures, facades, interior design, furnishing and the entire spectrum of product design.
Customer Reviews:
KOOLHAAS IS A JOKE! EVERYTHING ELSE IS GOOD!.......2006-11-22
This book should be called 60 colors because the Koolhaas section is a total joke. He baiscly has 30 pages of ex-employee bios and then a color swatch of their favorite color. What a waste of paper. No explanation of how they used the color or why they choose the color. Norman Foster and Alessandro Mendini do a better job, each includes about a paragraph about how they used/chose the color in their respective 30 colors.
My suggestion, buy it used and only pay 2/3 of the asking price.

Customer Reviews:
beautiful and intricate, but...........2005-12-22
Most of this coloring book is as wonderful as I expected it to be. I like the selections from the Book of Kells that were chosen to be included, and there's a good variety. The subject matter can't be beat, but I have two small complaints. One, some of the smaller knotwork details are indistinct, even missing. I realize they may be missing in the original, but for a coloring book I really feel they should have been extrapolated for completeness' sake. Second, the Latin script pages aren't translated, and the old calligraphy is hard enough to read that I can't translate them myself.
Aside from these picky details, though, this is a gorgeous, fun coloring book, perfectly appropriate for the collector, either of coloring books or Celtophilia:)
Book Description
Among the glories of surviving medieval manuscripts are illuminated ornaments in which florals, animals, human figures, and other motifs intertwine to form extraordinarily beautiful, decorative letters. This collection includes 296 of these permission-free images. A practical archive of usable lettering, these lovely illustrations also offer a wonderful glimpse of the ancient art of manuscript illumination.
Book Description
Magnificently embellished letters of the alphabet — approximately 40 to a page plus one page of roman and arabic numbers — primarily taken from Jones's illustrated The Psalms of David. Meticulously crafted Victorian designs range from small to large, simple to spectacular.

A Rich Resource.......2001-08-14
This collection goes far beyond the commonly seen pattern books to offer a fine selection of rarely seen European advertising art and commercial alphabets nicely displayed in full color. An excellent resource not only for patterns and styles, this presents an extensive selection of good-sized full-color plates allowing a feeling for the ambience of period line, form and color.
