Book Description

How do creative people create?Where do they get their ideas? For many, "brainstorm" sessions are a starting point. But huge numbers of creative people go through creative annuals or other books showing large amounts of work by top creative people. (Author David Carter calls this process "solitary brainstorming.") The Big Book of New Design Ideas was created for this specific purpose. Each piece was selected based on its potential to trigger an idea in the mind of the reader. Look at the logo section: you'll see a lot of different techniques there. Suddenly, you see a logo that "triggers" an idea. And that idea may have nothing at all to do with the one you just saw. That's pretty much how this book works. For everybody who uses the works of others to inspire their own ideas, this book is the one that should be on the shelf.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Big Book of Interiors.......2007-07-21

Not a book I'd recommend unless you're interested in pretty much the same design reworked over and over again. More than 380 pages of ultra-modern rooms which are sterile and "office building" chic at best. No diversity at all.

1 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-04-06

I don't really like having to rate a book so low, but I think it was more because it was nothing that I expected. My husband and I are basically "flipping" our house and I thought that this book would give us some great ideas and tips designing our new rooms. However, this book is just pictures! No information on where you can even find some of the products which is probably better because only movie stars and millionaires live in the houses that were displayed along the pages. If you have the money and want to gut everything, then this book is worth buying, however, if you just need some little ideas I suggest trying a different book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Ideas With Some Unusual Areas.......2006-07-14

This is a great idea book of interiors done by some of the best designers in the world. It is organized by the types of room:

Halls and Staircases
Kitchens
Dining Rooms
Living Rooms
Bedrooms
Home Offices
Bathrooms

This book offers ideas in several areas that you don't normall see in such idea books. The section on staircases is fantastic. Staircases give the designer to do some really dramatic things. I didn't realize just how dramatic until I saw all the designs that are shown here. And surprisingly, many of them look like they would be less expensive than traditional designs.

Another aspect of this book that isn't often seen is the decoration they have done on smaller houses and even lofts in converted warehouses, and sometimes showing very small areas.

Don't get the feeling though that you could build rooms like these by buying your appliances and furniture at the cut-rate discount store. This is a book of high end designs. Spectacularly photographed and printed.

Based on favorite Veggie videos from Big Idea, this Bible storybook helps children discover the tie-in to these stories with the Bible.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not a Bible, but a VERY good book!.......2007-09-22

Creative and fun characters fill the pages of this book with vivid colors. This book combines 21 Veggie stories we know from their videos and books with the Bible stories that inspired them. It is organized in the similar order as one would find them in Scripture. The table of contents even divides them into the Old and New Testaments.

Each chapter begins with a "countertop" introduction. Bob and Larry describe a current problem then lead into the Veggie story. Now we know Goliath was not really a giant pickle, so immediately after the story, the book presents the real Bible story with selections taken directly from New International Reader's Version of Scripture. Bob and Larry return "countertop" to wrap up the application with a memory verse.

Here is a list of the chapter stories and their correlated Bible stories.

The Ballad of Little Joe --- Joseph, Genesis 37-45
Babysitter in DeNile --- Miriam (saving baby Moses), Exodus 1-2
Frog Wars --- Moses (and the Exodus), Exodus 3-14
Josh and the Big Wall --- Battle of Jericho, Joshua 5-6
Gideon Tuba Warrior --- Gideon, Judges 6-7
Dave and the Giant Pickle --- David and Goliath, 1 Samuel 17
King George and the Ducky --- David's Selfish Sin (with Bathsheba), 2 Samuel 12
Esther, the Girl who Became Queen --- Esther, Esther 2-8
Madame Blueberry --- David's Heart (of thankfulness), Psalm 34
Rack, Shack & Benny --- Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, Daniel 3
Daniel and the Lions' Den --- Daniel, Daniel 6-2
Jonah --- Jonah Runs Away, Jonah 1-4
The Stable that Bob Built --- Jesus is Born, Luke 2
Where's God When I'm Scared --- Jesus Walks on Water, Matthew 14
The Story of Fibber-o-loo --- The Good Samaritan, Luke 10
Larry's Lagoon --- The Prodigal Son, Luke 15
An Easter Carol --- Jesus is Risen, Luke 24
Minnesota Cuke --- Wise Advice, Romans 12
Lyle the Kindly Viking --- A Cheerful Giver, 2 Corinthians 9-15
The Gourds Must Be Crazy --- The Conversion of Paul, Acts 9
LarryBoy and the Rumor Weed --- New Life ... New Ways, Colossians 3

What I Like: The Scriptural parallels. It's great to be able to point back to the actual passages in the Bible. The memory verses are great! My kids love VeggieTales, so this book was an instant favorite in our house. The authors find very creative ways to relay lessons in ways kids can easily understand. Also, collecting all the videos can be quite expensive. This is a great way to get a lot of the stories for one low price.

What I Dislike: Initially, I was disappointed with some of the stories -- outer space, super heroes and Gilligan's Island don't belong in a Bible -- but the more I read it, the more I liked the book! The problem was my expectations. Please note this is not a Bible, but a Bible storybook. My only complaint now is with the "Frog Wars" chapter. VeggieTales did a much better job telling the story of Moses in "Moe and the Big Exit." Unfortunately, that video was released after the publication of this book.

Overall Rating: Very Good.

Tanya -- Christian Children's Book Review

5 out of 5 stars VeggieTales® Bible Storybook.......2007-07-18

Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber, and all their friends share the stories of the Bible in a new and creatively unique way. Children will be completely entertained while learning how the stories of the Bible are relevant to their modern lives. Parents will love that their children have a new set of role models that actually understands and connects to children.

Veggie Tales Bible Storybook includes 21 stories from both the Old and New Testament. Each story is prompted by a particular situation that one of the Veggie Tales crew experiences such as dealing with a bully, being jealous of a sibling, wanting tons of presents, etc. This incident leads into a themed tale, from wild west themes to star wars, based loosely on a Bible story. The Veggie Tales characters are the stars of the show. These renditions tend to be quite entertaining in and of themselves. More importantly though, they make use of what children already know from movies and modern media and connect them to Biblical stories. Each Veggie Tale finishes up with the real Bible story and then follows up with the original lesson of the story as the characters as talk about what they learned.

Veggie Tales Bible Storybook will quickly become a family favorite that book parents and children will equally enjoy. An innovative, fun way to teach morals to children.

5 out of 5 stars my boys love this.......2007-05-07

oddly enough-even my 1 1/2 year old loves to page through this book. My 3 year old wants to read it every single night. personally-i'm sick of it but i am still happy to read it because it familiarizes stories that my son will hear about in sunday school and my aim is to have all these characters (biblical not veggietale) part of his life from an early age. just be sure you don't get confused by the "creative license" used by the authors...

5 out of 5 stars You Simply Must Own This Book! Adorable!.......2006-11-17

The moment I saw this book I knew I was going to love it. The cover immediately drew my attention as the adorable Veggie characters smiled at me; but that was only the beginning of this delightful work. Inside the pages of this book I was in for a real reading treat.
Reading the work, we find children's old Veggie Tale friends as they take them on a journey through some favorite Bible stories of Old and New Testament, bringing them to life as only Veggie Tales can do. We have the story of Esther, Daniel and the Lions' Den, David and Goliath; to name just a few. Each told with Veggie Tale characters illustrated in fun, colorful, creative pictures that will capture any child's attention and bring them right into the action of the story they are reading. Excellent!
I highly recommend this book. It will help to bring the Word of God alive to your child;this is simply a must have. Exceptional!

Book Description

"The computer world is like an intellectual Wild West, in which you can shoot anyone you wish with your ideas, if you're willing to risk the consequences. " --from Hackers & Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age, by Paul Graham

We are living in the computer age, in a world increasingly designed and engineered by computer programmers and software designers, by people who call themselves hackers. Who are these people, what motivates them, and why should you care?

Consider these facts: Everything around us is turning into computers. Your typewriter is gone, replaced by a computer. Your phone has turned into a computer. So has your camera. Soon your TV will. Your car was not only designed on computers, but has more processing power in it than a room-sized mainframe did in 1970. Letters, encyclopedias, newspapers, and even your local store are being replaced by the Internet.

Hackers & Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age, by Paul Graham, explains this world and the motivations of the people who occupy it. In clear, thoughtful prose that draws on illuminating historical examples, Graham takes readers on an unflinching exploration into what he calls "an intellectual Wild West."

The ideas discussed in this book will have a powerful and lasting impact on how we think, how we work, how we develop technology, and how we live. Topics include the importance of beauty in software design, how to make wealth, heresy and free speech, the programming language renaissance, the open-source movement, digital design, internet startups, and more.

And here's a taste of what you'll find in Hackers & Painters:

"In most fields the great work is done early on. The paintings made between 1430 and 1500 are still unsurpassed. Shakespeare appeared just as professional theater was being born, and pushed the medium so far that every playwright since has had to live in his shadow. Albrecht Durer did the same thing with engraving, and Jane Austen with the novel.

Over and over we see the same pattern. A new medium appears, and people are so excited about it that they explore most of its possibilities in the first couple generations. Hacking seems to be in this phase now.

Painting was not, in Leonardo's time, as cool as his work helped make it. How cool hacking turns out to be will depend on what we can do with this new medium."

Andy Hertzfeld, co-creator of the Macintosh computer, says about Hackers & Painters: "Paul Graham is a hacker, painter and a terrific writer. His lucid, humorous prose is brimming with contrarian insight and practical wisdom on writing great code at the intersection of art, science and commerce."

Paul Graham, designer of the new Arc language, was the creator of Yahoo Store, the first web-based application. In addition to his PhD in Computer Science from Harvard, Graham also studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unconventional book, unconventional author, surprising points made.......2007-10-19

The book particularly deals with the nexus between programming, creativity, social commentary, wealth-generation, business-personal-entrepreneurial psychology (his specialty!) and LISP-related stuff. I skipped the programming sections because Im not a programmer. The philosophical commentary was better than 90% of other philosophy books I've read, more cutting and more true-to-life.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-09-07

Paul Graham is very clever (and rich - is that relevant?), however light also bends around his ego. Whether the sum of these qualities is positive is not absolutely clear to me.

If you want to read the best thing that he has written, you might be better served by his book on advanced Lisp programming, which is a monument anybody can be proud of - it comes close behind SICP on my personal list.

And, if you do read this book, I suggest you also look at 'The Science of Art' by Martin Kemp, which gives another perspective on the maybe slightly overweighted metaphor of the title, and the relation between theory and practice it implies.

2 out of 5 stars Airport mall book.......2007-08-11

In spite of the strong desire to punch the author in the face after finishing the book, there are many great truths inside. Basically why is it that most people think salaries on the same position should be the same if work results differ in orders of magnitude.

Also it's funny to see an ultra-capitalist criticize the western decadent corporate structure. It's The Market for Lemons all over the place.

Don't expect to find anything useful to make a dot com startup on this book. It's all anecdotes from his experience and his quasi-religious views. It's more rhetoric on Lisp than business.

As another reviewer said, read first his online essays before diving into this.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but don't believe too much.......2007-07-29

I was entertained and greatly appreciated the view of the author but the many times I completely disagreed (due to very substantiated reasons) made me skeptical of several ideas of the author. But, the reasons for him holding those views is, in and of itself, interesting. He does have several good and controversial ideas and his experiences are quite valuable to read. Most of the time, I found myself flying high with him as he stated things that really need to be said which ran against conventional thought. Other times, I found myself raising my eyebrows in bewilderment. After all, it really is a book about his thoughts so take it as such. His book, his soapbox.

The book reads well but really trails off towards the end. I found myself finishing the book just so I could say I was through with it. The opening chapters are quite entertaining. Read a few chapters that you find interesting and leave it at that.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but dont expect to learn much.......2007-07-20

This is a nice little, light book that you can read after a hard day's coding and yet keep smiling. The language and style of writing is really good and makes reading quiet effortless. The topics being probed are of course bound to make you think. I would say, read this collection of essays to help you ponder further, but dont take the opinions too seriously.

Book Description

In Casting for Big Ideas, Andrew Jaffe, industry veteran and Director of the Clio Awards, details important lessons on the management and growth of advertising agencies. He shows how the forty-year-old agency business model is breaking down because the work is becoming marginalized, as clients cut back ad budgets and hire outside marketing services and strategy firms. If agencies are to survive, Jaffe says, they must become idea-focused again and, instead of just making ads, master the art of devising the kind of non-advertising-type promotions that more quickly move a brand into the culture. Based on his long experience in the advertising industry, Jaffe offers practical advice and important lessons for agency heads who want their businesses to stand the test of time. This one-of-a-kind resource covers a subject often ignored-the business side of running an ad agency.
Andrew Jaffe (New Canaan, CT) is the founding Publishing Director of Wiley's Adweek and Brandweek books imprints. He is also the Executive Director of the Clio Awards, one of the largest and most famous advertising awards programs in the world, with over 18,000 pieces submitted from agencies and production facilities in fifty-nine countries.

Very interesting reading. A book explores some real opportunities of the future of the advertising industry. Should be treated as the surviving guide of every agency head before they walk into their next new business pitch or when they are seriously thinking about the wayout of their declining profits every year.

5 out of 5 stars A Window Into the Future of our Economy and Your Money.......2003-07-13

This is one of the first books published which gives you a real look through the window of the future of our economy. The author, with years of experience in reporting how advertising effects our purchasing choices, offers an expert's point of view of advertising, which drives our economy. It effects everyone. It deals with how people will respond to advertising in this century (i.e. television, print media, the Internet) and how it will effect us. My broker said this book was more important than the ones he recommended about investing. We are all consumers experiencing an incredible transition from t.v. to cable, from cable to satellite, from magazine and newspaper ads to e-mail and Internet ads? If you want security what could be more important than to know what's going to happen to commercials on t.v., the web, or ads that inform you of sales and discounts in your local newspaper?

5 out of 5 stars an excellent reference.......2004-11-16

This is a must-have for any graphic designer. It is an excellent visual reference, full of inspiration and professionalism. There is a great mix of creativity and originality as well as logos we are familiar with already. If you ever feel stuck for ideas, this is an awesome book to get you out of a designer's block. It is very-well put together, both in design and layout... as well as the book itself. Definitely not a book that is going to fall apart, very sturdy and printed on good paper to really bring out the quality of the art.

4 out of 5 stars Eye candy for the graphic designer.......2004-09-12

The Big Book of Design Ideas is eye candy for the Graphic Designer. This oversized book is packed to the gills with nearly 400 pages of examples of graphic design from around the world and is the perfect book for solo-brainstorming. There is no text in the book at all, other than in the designs themselves and in a short caption under each design that details the designer/design team. The book is organized into 24 sections, each one containing designs from a particular type of print; books, catalogs, menus, Music CDs, letterhead sets and more. Every design is in full color. The reader can easily find a section dealing with what he/she is working on and get inspiration for their design or they can just simply flip through the pages for the shear enjoyment of it. One should not expect to learn graphic design from this book, but then that is not really the purpose of the book to begin with. Once one has a good foundation in the basics of graphic design, this book becomes more valuable as an inspirational tool. The book is a good addition to the library of any one in graphic design.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Layout.......2003-07-11

Beautifully done. Tons of categories. Extreme Picture book. Is nice enough to be a coffee table book even for those that aren't excited about graphics as much as I am. This is a great book to get some fresh ideas from. Nice reference book for any graphic artist. I loved this book so much that I bought it for one of my clients in the UK so they could have it, too. This would also make a great gift for any type of artist since it covers everything from corporate logos, letterheads, brochures, and even displays. It has much more than that because all the little color boxes on the front of the book are actual sections in this book. This is something that I wanted to have in hardcover.

2 out of 5 stars The "No Design" Design Book.......2003-06-12

This is what it should be called. It has many images of so-so to excellent design. However, all of the images seem to be thrown around on the pages with no regard to the layout of the page or the sections of the book.

The section headers were so faint that you almost missed them. Some of the images were bled off the page in such a way that you could not appreciate what was being illustrated. On other pages the examples were so close to the binding you almost have to rip the book in half to see them.

It was hard to find what you were looking for or to focus on the designs themselves as the design of the book itself was so poor.

Its OK to have a book with minimal text, but the design should be strong enough to support that.

2 out of 5 stars Very big but short of ideas.......2003-06-04

I ordered this book hoping it'll give me some fresh and new ideas for designing. I am very dissapointed, because what I've got is not more than 330 pages of outdated, temporary designs. Pretty much 330 of its 374 pages are filled with the same of what I call "typical american design from 90-95". So if you look at it that way, this book is way overpriced for 40 good pages.

Book Description

A cutting-edge design book for small apartments, Studio Apartments: Big Ideas for Small Spaces introduces the reader to the joys of small space living, whether in simple studios, tiny one-bedrooms, or more complex arrangements where two small rooms or studios are joined to form a larger but still compact living area.

Studio Apartments examines in detail how more than twenty architects have created remarkably refined and varied living spaces within small confines. A master bedroom can be carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then concealed behind a frosted-glass wall. A kitchen can evolve from a closet. A single long room with windows only at its end can become a warm and inviting living space. Here are some of the freshest, most original approaches to creating a real home within spaces smaller than 1,000 square feet, and in some cases less than 500 square feet.

The twenty-four beautifully photographed apartments are presented complete with floor plans, gorgeous before and after photographs, and clear text that leads the reader through the design process and highlights the "big idea" that makes each apartment distinctive.

With Studio Apartments, an apartment dweller with an eye for style can transform their dreams into reality. In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. With photos and case studies including floor plans of more than twenty studios under 800 square feet each, readers are shown solutions to the typical problems architects are asked to solve: creating sleeping alcoves, efficient kitchens, appealing bath and dressing areas, adequate storage, and work and entertainment areas.

Actual projects show how architects and interior designers extract maximum style and usage from small, urban apartments: a master bedroom is carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then hidden behind a frosted glass wall; a closet becomes a cook's kitchen, and a single long room with windows at one end is transformed into a warm and inviting living room. The "big idea" that makes each apartment special is highlighted in designs ranging from traditional to casual modern to cutting edge.In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. 3 out of 5 stars Very Modern.......2005-08-24

All of the spaces shown except one(Which also happens to be the only one under 800 sq ft) are very modern. Over all the pictures and layouts were nice, but to me kind of cold. I think it mentions casual modern, didn't see too much of that! If you like looking at ultra modern and expensive, larger than 1000 sq ft lofts, then buy this book!

4 out of 5 stars Modern ideas for small and nice spaces.......2005-02-12

I thought the styles and ideas are wonderful, if you have modern taste with creative resources to pay for the remodeling of your studio apartment. Granted, most the apartments displayed were from individual that could afford to spend a good sum of money to remodel, however, I was able to get good ideas to re-decorate my studio apartment in South Beach (Miami Beach, Florida). The benefit to buying this book was that I did not have to buy 10-20 Architecture magazines in order to acquire ideas. I was able to duplicate a bath room in this book, without "breaking the bank"-if you have the time to research and compare costs.

For example, I shopped on E-bay(vessels sinks/best prices for modern fixtures and sinks: www.aquaimports.com), Home Depot(only the bath tub)and "leg work" for the bathroom tiles (Modern little colorful tiles) (Spanish Tiles Corp, located in Miami, Fl)-called many contractors. Please remember before starting any project, check with your buildings and local zoning requirements, to under-go the projects seen in this book. If you are wondering, no I am not rich, but I did "cash in" my 401K in order to buy the apartment and remodel it, it was better than leaving it in the "stock market."

4 out of 5 stars A book for guys...........2002-02-17

Okay, maybe I'm biased or old-fashioned or both, but I don't find the apartments shown in BIG IDEAS FOR SMALL SPACES-STUDIO APARTMENTS attractive. The authors are both men with a great deal of knowledge about design, and I am sure their ideas will appeal mostly to men.

The examples shown are minimalist, modern, angular, and seem to belong to hard-working types who drop in only to sleep. For the most part these apartments are lacking in color which is the single most important element in decorating as far as I am concerned. Although the authors show some colorful ideas in their section on "cozy" apartments, for the most part their idea of making a place more homey seems to be adding books on shelves, chunky ashtrays, and sports trophies. In addition to cold, angular furniture and clunky "knickknacks", the minimalist rooms are often without curtains and/or have walls that are downright stark. One idea of "lightening" shows a curtain with a "porthole" in it that allows one to "look out" at the view.

If you're a guy looking for a book on how to decorate an appartment with a modernist "masculine" look this may be the book for you. One other note: the book was printed in China and the photographs looks like those in 1950s era books even though the publication date is 2000.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and creative.......2001-10-17

This is one of my favorite design books. I notice some other reviewers have complained that the apartments shown in this book are beyond their budget (alas, mine too). However, the concepts can be applied with less spendy solutions, and let's face it: a book filled with photos of ordinary spaces would lack the magic that this book possesses and would inspire fewer people (if any) to dream about their own space.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2001-10-16

Excellent combinations of photos and drawings to show off the features of these fantastic units. Before and after plans illustrate how design potentials can be optimized and achieved...

I purchased this book to read in a early education classroom setting. It was much better suited to individual use. Both the words and the pictures are directed at parents reading to their children. The content was also a bit high for the ages it is geared towards.
