Great Pix and Better Info.......2001-11-06
This book has terrific photographic reproductions, and interesting detailed information about still life, from its origins to the present. As an art teacher, and someone interested in the history of art, I found both the visual and verbal information really valuable.

Worth the cost.......2007-06-27
Depending on what you are purchasing this book for...my interest was for fiber art work which it fits the bill totally. The drawings from Mr. Haeckel are superb. I only wish they were in color...which you can purchase the more expensive color plate book. But still this is quite worth the money.
Fun book, but better version with CD available.......2007-04-24
I recommend a different version of this book, also sold on Amazon - link below. I am not sure if it contains the same set of illustrations, but many of the illos are in color, and it includes a CD containing all the pics from the book.

AWESOME GEOMETRIC FORMS.......2007-01-20
great book to just stare at. the amazing part is that it's real.
Great book with beautiful illustrations!!.......2006-05-05
I was looking for a great illustrated coffee table book and I found it right here! All the pictures are black-and-white and beautiful!
Look for the edition published by Prestel as well!.......2006-03-19
Anyone who 'knows' Dover books, will probably agree that they offer good quality for very reasonable prices. There is nothing 'wrong' with this book, except that all the plates are in black and white, and there is no information on Haeckel and his times. Prestel has also published this book of plates, with a highly informative article on Haeckel, his influences, and those influenced by him included, AND with many of the plates 'in color' (that is, often one color in different -subtle - hues, or a color scheme based on two colors). Unless you are a strictly 'black and white' person, I would advise you to look for the Prestel book.

Aerial Photographs of the World's MostUntouched and Beautiful Places"Edmaier raises the art of aerial photography to new heights." -NaturalHistory Magazine"The abstract, painterly images show a shrinking national environment thatcries out for preservation." -Photo District News Science meets art in the new book PATTERNS OF THE EARTH by BernhardEdmaier, a fascinating exploration of the earth's surface by one of theworld's top aerial photographers. This compact collection featuresstunning pictures of natural phenomena such as volcanoes, glaciers, coralreefs, dunes, rivers, craters, canyons and salt flats, revealing the beautyof the dwindling unspoiled areas of our planet.PATTERNS OF THE EARTH features over 400 color photographs, many previouslyunpublished, of "off the beaten path" regions such as the Bahamas, Iceland,New Zealand, Ecuador, Greenland, Ethiopia, The Maldives, Canada andYellowstone National Park and Bryce Canyon in the USA.Grouped in chaptersaccording to pattern, the images make us look at the world in a new way, byshowing us surprising similarities and unexpected links between differentparts of the globe. Traveling to uninhabited and remote areas, Edmaier's photographs offer aunique view of these extraordinary locations. He takes his images from ashigh as 20,000 feet in the air, far higher than most aerial photographers, exposing natural patterns and documenting the geological processes at work. Originally a geologist and engineer before turning to photography, he hasa rare gift for catching the aesthetic side of our dynamic earth.PATTERNS OF THE EARTH quietly acknowledges the effects of global warming. With rising temperatures, areas of permafrost are melting as are someglaciers and ice sheets in Alaska, Canada and Siberia. The book providesamazing photographs of these locations and more, providing a newperspective from above revealing the effects of the natural and humanforces that shape our future. PATTERNS OF THE EARTH is divided into five chapters: Bands, Stripes,Ripples; Circles, Spots, Grains; Forks, Branches, Webs; Curves, Ribbons,Swirls; and Spikes, Grids and Cracks. Each image is accompanied by a briefcaption by science writer Dr. Angelika Jung-Huttl, describing the locationof the pattern depicted and where and why a variety of these formationsoccur in nature. This is Bernhard Edmaier's second book with Phaidon. His first book,EARTHSONG was an oversize collection of his aerial photographs, firstpublished to great acclaim in 2004, followed up by EARTHSONG POSTCARDS. PATTERNS OF THE EARTH is a fascinating source of inspiration for thoseworking in creative industries as well as environmentalists, scientists, photographers and armchair travelers who marvel at the world around them.

Amazing Photos.......2007-05-10
It is hard to believe that the photos in this book are real earth photos and not paintings. My only regret is that the book is too small to really appreciate the incredible detail and massive scope of the pictures. It would be a good idea to list the overall size of books, espically art-type books such as this one.Patterns Of The Earth
Book Description
One of the delights of life is the discovery and rediscovery of patterns of order and beauty in natureâdesigns revealed by slicing through a head of cabbage or an orange, the forms of shells and butterfly wings. These images are awesome not just for their beauty alone, but because they suggest an order underlying their growth, a harmony existing in nature. What does it mean that such an order exists; how far does it extend? The Power of Limits was inspired by those simple discoveries of harmony. The author went on to investigate and measure hundreds of patternsâancient and modern, minute and vast. His discovery, vividly illustrated here, is that certain proportions occur over and over again in all these forms. Patterns are also repeated in how things grow and are madeâby the dynamic union of oppositesâas demonstrated by the spirals that move in opposite directions in the growth of a plant. The joining of unity and diversity in the discipline of proportional limitations creates forms that are beautiful to us because they embody the principles of the cosmic order of which we are a part; conversely, the limitlessness of that order is revealed by the strictness of its forms. The author shows how we, as humans, are included in the universal harmony of form, and suggests that the union of complementary opposites may be a way to extend that harmony to the psychological and social realms as well.

a++++.......2003-06-15
its a goood and extremely helpful book!
Architects take notice.......2003-05-24
A very good book an sacred geometry with lots of diagrams.
Elegant.......2001-12-29
This beautifully illustrated and diagrammed book attempts to show the harmony that exists in nature and all good art and architecture. Not only that, Doczi attempts to weave into this picture, (with some success) Pythagorean concepts of harmony and it's relation to growth in nature.
The essential concept in this book is the 'power of limits.' Doczi shows that this limiting factor is the golden section. And he does it using almost no math! The golden section has the powerful quality that division or expansion by this proportion always leads to harmonious growth. No matter how small or large is the division, there is never anything "left over" to create disharmony. This limiting factor is of transcendental power, thus "The Power of Limits."
Unregulated growth could never achieve anything but randomness, which is not what we observe in nature.
Of course in nature and in life it is impossible to achieve perfection. Yet Doczi elegantly explains how nature compensates for this inability by using the Fibonnaci sequence instead. Profusely illustrated with many detailed, easy-to-understand diagrams, this book is a must for those who wish to understand more deeply how our world is constructed, without wading through a lot of math.
Interesting, Helpful, Fuzzy.......2001-07-20
While I agree with the other reviewers that this book is both well written & well illustrated, the Jungian cant of the author feels too new-agey to me. Proportion is indeed present in the world, but to assign proprtion to EVERYTHING is an over-generalization, and to ascribe a metaphysical meaning to it based on this over-generalization is a bit much. Useful for the illustrations of proportion, a thing every designer ought to know, but when it wanders off into the woods it looses me.
Mathematical Harmony in Nature.......2001-06-08
Any serious observer of nature can tell you there are rhythms in nature, patterns that repeat themselves. Far from chaos, there is harmony. The Golden Section, A : B = B : A + B, is part of that harmony. From Fibonacci numbers to the Golden Rectangle, this book will awaken the reader to a sense of perfection, an incredible order, found virtually everywhere in nature. Beyond the interesting phenomena, there lies a larger message. This, all of this, did not happen by some cosmic accident.

Reflections of Nature.......2007-05-24
Beautifully printed volume on the work of watercolor painter Joseph Raffael. Very comprehensive of his work as a painter through 1998, the year in which the book was published. I'd like to eventually another book showing the work that he's done during the last 9 years.
Great book on Joseph Raphael.......2005-03-17
Perfect book for the student, collector, dealer or art historian interested in this important artist. As one of America's foremost buyers of Joseph Rahael paintings, I highly recommend this book. www.LawrenceBeebe.com
A Monograph worthy of its Subject.......2002-04-26
REFLECTIONS OF NATURE: Paintings of Joseph Raffael is one of the most elegant monographs on a practicing artist I have had the pleasure of reading. Yes, "reading" is an operative word here. Too often artist monographs are coffee table picture books, lush and lovely to look at, enlightening as to a chronologial path of achievement, and even historically relevant - solely on the basis of the images: the written essays are seldom read and if they are read, they are merely perused. Such is not the case with this warmly informative and evocative collection of the works of this fine realist painter. Authors Amei Wallach and Donald Kuspit write with courage about techniques (use of the photograph as the springboard, method of appropriation form the photo image to the paper or canvas, etc) that would frighten most of our painters today, so revealing of secrets and methods publically scorned as "copying" or NOT "representational". But the real coups in this valuable volume is having the artist talk us through not only his techniques, but is personal history and vulnerabilites.
As for the paintings, there are splendid reproductions of those paintings we all know and love (koi, water, water lilies, flowers) but there are also many examples of Raffael's wildlife images, spiritual images, and those of his wife Lannis seeming to metamorphose out of her garden. This book is a fine standard for future art books that stirve to inform as well as document an artist's work. Even if you don't know Raffael's paintings, I would recommend your adding this volume ot your library - for you eye's AND your soul's sake. Outstanding!
Master Class !!!.......2000-09-29
Well Written and full of wonderful photos and Illustrations. 5 Stars! Totally Satisfied.
Sumptuous reproductions, informative text, nice layout........1999-09-25
Interesting background information on one of this country's foremost contemporary artists. A somewhat fatuous portrayal of the artist and his lifestyle, but a terrific and - thankfully - colorful exhibit of the recent works of this talented artist. Definitely worth buying.

quick gifts and samplers.......2000-08-09
This book is divided into several sections--holiday, kids, animals, flowers, quilts, etc. They are all very simple--I used patterns from this book to teach cross-stitch to beginners. They were unable to complete them in two hours but they did enjoy stitching the designs. I've also used this book to make quick gifts (although some take more than two hours--I think the title just makes it part of the "two hour" series). Unlike those books where projects are shown followed by the patterns, these patterns are on the center of the page with pictures of the pattern stitched on the outer edge of the page. They aren't shown so much as completed projects, but I think this helps free the stitcher to decide on how the project should be finished.

Book Description
Numerous tendencies in landscape architecture, science and theory have driven research and landscape transformation for over thirty years. Approaches as different as Ecological Aesthetics, Art in Nature, Ecoart and Reclamation Art are united by a search for dialogue with natural processes. This book describes the diverse aspects of ecological aesthetics from the point of view of artists, landscape architects, scientists, philosophers and politicians. A special place among the work presented, by over fifty international artists and landscape architects, takes the landscape art of Herman Prigann, who also initiated this survey. Amongst the 17 authors are Jacques Leenhardt (F), Massimo Venturi Ferriolo (I), Udo Weilacher (D), Malcom Miles (GB), Tim Collins (USA). The book is co-produced with MD Berlin and sponsored by Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt.

30 years of ecological art with great essays & illustrations.......2005-05-02
Landscapes leave their imprint on human beings. It's the basic intention of this book to make the reader understand landscape as a phenomenon situated between the two (seemingly) opposite poles of nature and culture and, to make us experience the necessity for a sustainable ecological preservation and development of nature through the intervention of art. This is evidenced by a multitude of examples with great illustrations, easy to grasp in the first chapters of the book and becoming increasingly complex and diverse thereafter, particularly in the last part which deals with integrative landscape art. As important and meaningful as the illustrations are the essays compiled in this book. In many respects they provide the fundament for understanding the various images and provide access to the ideas of ecological aesthetics. Although the book may primarily be directed towards artists, art and cultural scientists it is eventually a stimulus for reflexion and an aesthetic joy also for people who, like me, are not active in the art business.

Great Resource Book.......2007-01-05
I bought this book as a resource for Theatre Design and it has proven to be a valuable asset. I can look through the photos in the book while researching and use the CD to put together presentations. The book's overall content is wide ranging and detailed, and is organized well. I would recommend this book to anyone in the arts, even if you don't use it for research, it's cool to look though.
Once again... Amazing.......2005-08-19
This book is one of the best references for any designer and painter in the industry. Color Photos are amazing and complete. I have been wanting to purchase it for years now and am very glad to add it to my collection. All of her books are worth having in any artists library.

Mathematics in Nature: Modeling Patterns in the Natural World
ASIN: 0387979913 |
Book Description
The variety of sizes, shapes, and irregularities in nature is endless. Through illustrations and text, the authors of The Parsimonious Universe describe the efforts by scientists and mathematicians since the Renaissance to identify and describe the basic laws underlying the shape of natural forms. Can one set of laws account for both the symmetry and irregularity as well as the infinite variety of nature's designs? Complete answers to these questions are likely novel to be discovered. Still, down through the ages, the investigation of form and pattern in nature has yielded some fascinating and surprising insights. Out of this inquiry comes a specific branch of mathematics - the calculus of variations - which explores questions of optimization (finding designs that maximize or minimize a particular quantity).
Customer Reviews:
A great reference and resource guide for artists.......1996-09-12
If any artists are exploring reference material on shape, form and
design in nature, this book explains why nature does 'create' it's
unique self.
It does tend to explain and breakdown natural shapes into mathematical
equations and theorims. Still the photos they provide and
the line drawings help you to understand why things are the
way they are. Useful if you want to create hybrids of these
forms. A intelligent imagination is useful.
My applications for this are from a 3D fine arts point of
view. The info in the book has provided me with inspiration
in my 3D artwork.
Sincerely
Andre Ribuoli
