Book Description
When Ayn Carrillo-Gailey confronted her boyfriend about his porn habit, he pronounced her "pornophobic." Determined to prove she wasn't phobic, simply more enlightened, Ayn set out to learn all she could about this phenomenon. Like any good researcher, she added her new quest to her daily To-Do list:
1. Drop off dry cleaning
2. Call Mom
3. Visit sex toy store on Melrose
Acting as an amateur anthropologist introduced Ayn to a world populated by everyday people. Her quest aroused the curiosity of her female friends: her knitting group quickly turned into informal information sessions, as the womensingle or married, involved or notwere desperate for information.
What does XXX mean vs. un-rated?
What's the difference between topless dancers and strip clubs?
Why is some of it actually not that stimulating? And why are men obsessed with it?
Along the way, Ayn ditched the porn-obsessed boyfriend, and learned that one should not try to make change from a stripper's G-string tips, nor is the Hustler store the best place to make a first impression on a hot guy. Pornology is the result of one woman's quest to pierce the veil that modestly covers something many women actually want to know about. Suprising, hilarious, informative, and ultimately non-judgmental, this narrative is one readers won't put downonce they admit they're curious enough to pick it up!

I laughed out loud!.......2007-09-11
I truly laughed out loud while reading parts of this book. I wouldn't say it groundbreaking, but it's an enjoyable read.
Entertaining and easy to read.......2007-08-30
This is an excellent summer read, with elements of laughter and disaster. It seems like a lot of the situations are real, but I can imagine that they are overdrawn to make the reader laugh.
All in all, it's a light-hearted and funny book, not master literature, but nobody is expecting that.
Hilarious and happy-making!.......2007-08-23
I really enjoyed this book much more than I expected. I found it by chance while browsing in the library and didn't realize how funny it was going to be! I laughed out loud several times, so hard I could barely keep reading the rest of the scene sometimes. It was in the non-fiction section, but in the small type behind the title page, it said that certain situations were altered for dramatic effect, so it's hard to know what was really true. It seems like the overall storyline and characters' relationships were probably close to the truth, which made me smile at the end. As a Chinese American, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the writer was also (half) Chinese.
Hilarious!.......2007-08-22
When Ayn Carrillo-Gailey's boyfriend accuses her of being pornophobic, she sits down and creates a "porn to do list." It includes visiting a strip club, testing vibrators, and ten other items she, as a self-described "good girl", is curious about but has never experienced. The result is this book; a laugh-out-loud memoir of her journey through the adult entertainment industry.
Her writing is honest and she, along with her always entertaining friends the Naughty Knitters, hold nothing back as they explore subjects that are sometimes taboo and always interesting. You'll learn what goes on behind the scenes at a brothel, how much you should tip for a lap dance, and that laughing during sex is a good thing!
One chapter worth mentioning is when she was inspired by Morgan Spurlock's documentary "Super Size Me" and decides to consume nothing but porn for two weeks. She turns off NPR and tunes into Howard Stern. She is coaxed into eating lunch at Hooters by a friend who insists she should eat at "porn-related food venues." Finally, she receives over 100 porn videos from her supportive friends with imaginative titles like Clitty Clitty Gang Bang and A Clockwork Orgy, that are playing almost constantly. In the end, she's a little burnt out and a box of porn has crashed down on top of her latest crush, but she's found out a lot more about her own desires. She's also inspired by her latest experiment, and invites the aforementioned crush to a viewing where she is greatly rewarded.
Overall, the book is a quick, entertaining read that I would recommend to anyone who is curious about the sex industry or just looking for a good time!
LOVED this book.......2007-07-31
What a great read. I laughed aloud so many times my husband demanded to read the book the second I finished. I will never think wheat-free waffles or porn in the same way again!

"TJ had never killed anyone before, but then who knew for sure? Sticking a pump shotgun out of a moving car and blasting into a crowd--you could never really tell which bodies fell because of you, whose life you were accountable for..." The cover may be gaudy, but this account of girl gangbangers is down-to-earth and refreshingly free of melodrama. In order to write 8 Ball Chicks journalist Gini Sikes spent a year hanging out with girl gangs in Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and San Antonio. As Salon writes, "Sikes's analysis is sparse and not particularly illuminating ('Without an effective national policy for youth, kids fell through the cracks in droves'), but she's got a good ear and the sense to step back and let her subjects seize the microphone most of the time."
Book Description
Dismissed by the police as mere adjuncts to or gofers for male gangs, girl gang members are in fact often as emotionally closed off and dangerous as their male counterparts. Carrying razor blades in their mouths and guns in their jackets for defense, they initiate drive-by shootings, carry out car jackings, stomp outsiders who stumble onto or dare to enter the neighborhood, viciously retaliate against other gangs and ferociously guard their home turf.
But Sikes also captures the differences that distinguish girl gangs-abortion, teen pregnancy and teen motherhood, endless beatings and the humiliation of being forced to have sex with a lineup of male gangbangers during initiation, haphazardly raising kids in a household of drugs and guns with a part-time boyfriend off gangbanging himself. Veteran journalist Gini Sikes spends a year in the ghettos following the lives of several key gang members in South Central Los Angeles, San Antonio, and Milwaukee. In 8 Ball Chicks, we discover the fear and desperate desire for respect and status that drive girls into gangs in the first place--and the dreams and ambitions that occasionally help them to escape the catch-22 of their existence.

LIFE BEYOND THE WHITE PICKET FENCE!!.......2007-09-07
eight ball chicks, was a great book. it tells you how it really is out there. in the places where there is no other choice, where you don't have time to be a kid, and where there's nothing but bad around you. gini sikes does what she set out to do. to study, learn, and let the world know about these girls and what they're all about in these gangs. although there was much more that could have been said, and many more gangs to see it was nicely written no doubt. these were just a few of the girls, but there are many more, with different stories, all leading them down the same path. it's showing you, where these women come from, why they do what they do. in most cases there's no other way. if they could all have that nice house, with both parents, and a nice safe community, i'm sure they would take it, but when all you have is a barrio full of drugs, and guns, with nobody who gives a damn, there really isn't much hope. you got to be strong, emotionally to survive these places. no doubt there's some who do it for the thrill and what not, but they all end up the same. another banger behind bars or shot down somewhere. all my respect to this book and to those people who really have no choice. there's a whole lot more trouble out there that some turn a blind eye to and wish not to see, but this book is an "in your face" kind of book and i love it for that.
Save your money.......2007-03-13
There is nothing insightful in this book.Gini Sikes basically tells the stories of a few women who made bad choices and then blamed everyone but themselves for the outcomes of those choices. The book bogs down only a quarter of the way through it and never recovers. It is monotonous and tough to get to the end.I would probably rather listen to a scratched Wham CD or eat a huge bowl of brussel sprouts than have to read this again.Save your money.
I hate to say it's a FUN read, but it really is........2006-01-12
I agree with Amazon's review of 8 Ball Chicks. I don't think Gini Sikes had anything particularly insightful to say, but I give it the max rating because these women's stories are CRAZY (i.e. really entertaining to read, especially for people who love to read about how messed up the world is). Whoever you are, this book is worth reading.
Girl gangbangers.......2005-08-01
When I first heard of the book I heard it on TV and said to myself that the title meant the name of a girl gang and the whole book would be about that gang. I was wrong and do wonder why it has this title if it has nothing to do with "8ball Chicks".
Gini is very insightful on the research she made on these different race gang ladies and their gang life. I like the book but think she needed to include more on the gang culture of women out here and there.
All these writers write about gangs in California, Texas, Illinois. Yet, there are few compared to these states but there are more of us gangbangers out here in the other states. Such as the east coast; Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland. Some writers are careful in not stereotyping their novels but I personally dont judge them because most of them time it is about stereotypical stories.
I wish I can write my own books and let people know what more there is out there. The behind the scenes of behind the scenes of what people already know. The ganglife of us women, culture, pride, heritage, family, and mi vida loka.
Good book anyways.
Through the eyes of female gangs!.......2003-11-07
Originally I was reading the book because in a play at my University, (the play was on female gangs), and needed to do a little research, but when I picked up the book and began to read, I found many more reasons not to put it down. What captured me the most about the book was the way Gini Sikes was able to give the most vivid image of gang life through that book, I have ever read. I felt like I was on those L.A. streets and in those San Antonio neighborhoods.
I believe Gini Sikes not only captured the violent side of gang life but the human side. I was able to see these people, she wrote about, as more than "gang bangers", these people had lives and were living like any other person. Overall, this book is like a documentary written down. "Cocoa" and "Alicia" were having some normal troubles in their life and in some way or another, I could relate to that. It was things like man trouble, parent trouble, and school trouble, any usual young adult will go through those things (maybe not to the extreme. In my imagination, I visualized every part of the book as if it were a film.
Last, I believe Gini Sikes was very brave for going into each neighborhood personally and seeing for herself "the life". I think this made the book a lot better and it put more feeling into the book. I don't think she would have been able to write a very affective book if she had not actually stepped into the world of gangs for a minute. In conclusion, Gini Sikes did her job in dissecting the life of female gangs through a book!

Fat chicks Rule!.......2006-05-03
I picked up Lara Frater's wonderful book and I'm so happy I did. This is a great book for the fat chick. It's filled with awesome advice and info.
THIS BOOK ROCKS!.......2005-07-26
Round. Plump. Zaftig. It doesn't matter what word you use, they all mean "fat." And it's beautiful. That's the message from Lara Frater in her new book, "Fat Chicks Rule." LF doesn't apologize for being on the heavy side and neither, she says, should any woman (or man) who's in the same general size category. Fat is fun. It's cool. It's a survival asset in more cultures and at more historical periods than anyone at the New England Journal of Medicine is ever going to admit. LF gives tons of information about the history of fat, the history of women, background on why the medical profession is not necessarily your friend, as well as advice on tips that makes it a little simpler for fat chicks to work, shop, play and travel. Most importantly, she tells her readers that as long as they eat well, exercise, and let common sense dictate their impulses to lose weight (rather than the billion dollar diet industry), they'll probably do just fine. I picked this book up on a tip from a friend at work (we're all on the heavy side) and I was amazed and excited to read a message that finally made sense to me after having heard the same recycled dogma from doctors, the government, and other so-called "professional" health experts who were obviously more interested in selling their own "health products" than my health. This book is a gem!
Fat Chicks Rock!!.......2005-07-15
We had a chance to read Lara Frater's "Fat Chicks Rule!" When I asked Liza what she thought, she simply replied, "This is every woman's story..."
Lara talks of her "thin voice" - you know the one that promises you friends, romance, success, beauty - if you could only lose some weight. The same little voice the drives us back to the roller coaster world of dieting. And then one day, she stepped off the ride, and began to live her life . . .
And she wants the reader to live too! She wants them to reclaim their bodies from the diet industry and from media stereotypes of beauty. The writer takes the reader on a how to journey of Ruling as a Fat Chick!!
Fat Chicks Rule! is a great resource for everything the Fat Chick needs to live her life fully. Need a role model? Check out Fat Chicks in history or famous entertainers. Lara has done her homework; a practical guide covering everything from size-positive movies to shopping tips to dare we say it? Yes folks, SEX!! It's all there and more.
Even witty comebacks for those insensitive remarks. . . My favorite being, "There's a thin person inside you." "That's because thin people are so tasty!"
So, if you need some advice, looking for a place to shop, or need a little boost in the self-esteem department - check out "Fat Chicks Rule!"

The Unofficial Guide to the Art of Jack T. Chick: Chick Tracts, Crusader Comics, And Battle Cry Newspapers
ASIN: 0867195126 |
Book Description
For nearly 40 years Jack Chick has written and published hundreds of illustrated gospel tracts in close to 100 languages. Copies of Chick's tracts are even displayed in the Smithsonian Institute as an integral part of American culture. These fire-and-brimstone giveaway comics have been called offensive, hilarious, inspirational, and frightening. Robert Fowler has created an exhaustive index and summation of Chick's works, examining their history as well as the views of this maverick Christian fundamentalist cartoonist. Under the guise of a collector's resource, this book analyzes each Chick tract in detail with essential information about content and circulation. [Chick's] artwork is really interesting and intense and the guy's world outlook is so psycho and twisted.... But the books are really interesting because, sick as the stuff is, it's so well done. Robert Crumb
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference work, an astonishingly well researched book.......2007-10-04
This *book* is much better than the internet sites that cover some of the same material. Robert Fowler's "The World of Chick?" is a work of devotion and love for a uniquely American genre that deserves to be catalogued by scholars of Americana.
For those who collect Chick Tracts and ancillary Chick art works this reference is indispensable.
What You Don't Know Will Hurt You.......2004-08-02
It is necessary that all serious collectors of Chick Tracts buy this book. Everything you need to know (and much more) concerning the history and printing of Mr. Chick's tracts is here. Read the editorial review and the other customer reviews for more information on this book.
That said, it is even more necessary (a matter of life and death) for collectors (and anyone else who reads a Chick Tract) to realize and act on the FACT that Mr. Chick's "views" are absolute truths and that there is no salvation possible for anyone who does not accept Jesus Christ as his (or her) personal savior. There is no other name by which you may be saved but that of Jesus Christ through faith (NOT through good works).
It is love alone which compels so-called fundamentalists like Mr. Chick to speak as he does; love for sinners and lost souls. One reviewer refers to Mr. Fowler's dedication and love in preparing this book. I thank God for Mr. Chick's dedication and love in preparing his tracts so that souls may be saved.
Laugh at me, be angry with me, call me a bigot and much worse. Good people,I write this review not for myself but for you.
Good book.......2003-07-28
I actually bought this thinking it would be a collection of chick tracts, but it is not such, since that would violate copyrights. However, what it is, is an extensive catalouge of Chick tracts, and publications. The author manages to construct an encyclopedia of the world view according to Chick. Some may see this as unimportant, but in this day and age, with Christian fundamentalism and all religious fundamentalism growing, it can give an interesting look into a segment of our society.
Jack Chick isn't that far out of the mainstream.......2003-02-05
In reading the reviews of "The World of Chick?" most reviewers don't seem to understand that Chick DOES represent a fairly mainline belief structure in the U.S.
Jack Chick is just reflecting standard theology (fundamentalist theology) in his tracts, and by and large, Christian fundamentalists in the U.S. buy all this stuff without flinching. In fact, the whole "Bible Belt" generally believe the following examples -- all of them straight from Chick's tracts: A) Religions that don't accept salvation through grace alone are not "Christian" / save (thus, Mormoms and Catholics are going to hell), B) Salvation -- even at the last minute -- is enough to get into heaven, and C) God doesn't judge on the basis of skin color at all -- but instead, on the basis of one's own belief in a righteous god and a saving Christ on the cross.
I should know, I was raised as one of these fundamentalists. And you know, they're not bad people. Just people who are firmly convinced that they've found the secrets of the universe in the Bible, and that the world needs to learn these secrets as well in order to be saved from a certain doom. (Which, of course, is exactly what Jack Chick's tracts so effectively communicate!)
Exhaustive!.......2002-01-18
This is a phenomenal reference guide to the bizarre world of Jack T. Chick. Anything you could ever want to know about Chick, his writings, and his critics is collected in one volume. Here his evangelical comix are coded, sorted, analyzed, reviewed, and placed in context within the Chick canon. The obvious dedication and love put into this book is incredible. Equally obvious is the enjoyment, fascination, and obsessiveness of the author.
The only way this book could be improved would be to spruce up the table of contents (page numbers would be helpful), make the section headings more obvious, and provide a key for the code (maybe it's there and I just haven't found it). But those are pretty minor flaws in an overall great work.

I LOVE this book!!! I AM CANADIAN!.......2004-06-15
Not being bias, but I love this book! It's a great reference book for any Canadian trivia buffs, or just people interested in how we got where we are. And, I truly believe this book is not just for Canadians - it really is quite interesting & informative. A fun read, a good challenge into your own personal will: "I would have never stood for that..." Amazing how far we've come. Actually, more amazing is "what we came from". Cheers to the Chicks that pave the way! Dudes should read this, too. It's definitely NOT arrogant, or man-despising. You'd get a good chuckle.
The cover got... the content kept me!.......2002-11-15
Yes, I do judge a book by the cover. This cover was so cool, I had to buy it. Then, I started reading it. What a hoot! I learned about Canadian good girls, bad girls, winners, losers, saints and sinners. We have an amazing history of chicks in Canada! Thanks to the author for making it so much fun to learn about the women of my country. I loved the sections on being a "good' wife and about the war times and what women went through. This book runs the gamut and my eyes are certainly opened wider to what my mom and grandma went through! Canadian Chicks Rock!
If you are (or know) a Canadian woman, this book is for you.......2002-11-04
I had no idea that Canadian women had accomplished so much throughout our history! Ann Douglas has written a book that is sure to become a Canadian classic. Written in an easy-to-read and humourous style, this book shines with its thorough research and fascinating information. Canadian women can finally be celebrated for their achievements. You go girl! My holiday gift shopping just got a lot easier, since every girl/woman on my list will receive this book!
Canuck Chicks & Maple Leaf Mamas.......2002-11-03
You don't have to be an official Canuck Chick to fall in love with Ann Douglas's hilarious guide to Canadian women's accomplishments. If you've ever wanted to know more about the kind of women the "Great White North" has produced, look no further. The book kicks off with a side-splitting "Good Wife Exam" that cleverly pokes fun at so-called "expert advice" to women during the early to mid 1900s. Thankfully, a whole lotta Chicks and Mamas refused to take this advice. Douglas leads readers on a light-hearted but fact-filled romp through Canadian accomplishments and exploits in sports, the media, Hollywood, etc. If you ever thought history--particular women's history--was dull stuff, you haven't encountered Canuck Chicks.

An excellent lift the flap book.......2000-03-21
This is my three year old daughters favorite book. It is a well written story that appeals to both younger and older children with plenty of interaction between lifting the flaps and introducing the new animals to your children. A must read!
This is an excellent visual book for children of any age........1999-01-25
I read this book to my son when he was just a few weeks old and it kept his attention. He has enjoyed it ever since. Now that he is a year and a half he likes to find all of the animals in the book and point out the ones I ask him to locate. Enjoy this book and all of the others by this author with your children
Cute pop-up book........1998-07-09
The story is simple: Charlie Chick is looking for his brothers and sisters, but all sorts of other creatures are hatching from the eggs he finds. Six pages feature eggs to look in (flaps to lift). Each flap activates a pop-up or causes something to slide into view. As the last page is opened, an elaborate two-page pop-up is revealed. The artwork and pop-ups are very cute.
