I have worked on both Microstation and Autocad since 1981. However,for the last 7 years I have been involed with Autocad only and this book supplied answers to questions that I had and brought me up to speed on the use of Microstation V8.

This book is an indispensable companion for huge fans of the ALIEN series, especially those who, like me, think that ALIENS is the pinnacle of the franchise. But even if you're just a casual fan of the series but a major lover of science fiction, this is a great book to have.

The most amazing part of the book is the long essay on combat between capital ships in space. The essay is a very hard-science fiction oriented piece that addresses a lot of the issues with ship to ship combat that are taken for granted in works like Star Trek and Star Wars. It addresses issues like combat between two ships in orbit around a planet, cloaking against a starfield, space mine arrays, directed energy weapons, railguns, and the use of decoys in space combat.

The rest of the book is equally believable in its portrayal of futuristic warfare, and it does an excellent job of giving background information on the world of ALIEN without holding the reader's hand or revealing everything. The pictures, drawings, and schematics are nothing short of amazing.

The Difinitive Guide to Aliens and Alien.......2005-08-15

Not much more I can add that others haven't other than to push the point home. This book is a technical sci-fi fan's dream come true. The level of detail and realism put into this book rivals that of the Star Trek technical books, and even surpasses them on some levels. This book is painstakingly researched and is an official and authorized explanation of the weapons, ships, tech and much more are covered in this book.

Just about everything you could want to know about the technical aspects of the Alien and Aliens universe are here. You can know exactly how a pulse rifle or a power loader works. You can see the inner workings of a dropship. You can see the full capabilities of the Sulaco. You name it, and it's there. You even get entries for military equipment that was not in the movie, but still part of the Alien universe.

Did I mention Alien? Yeah you get a ton of information on the Nostromo as well as details on the escape shuttle and equipment they used. You also get extensive details on androids as well (from both movies). They even go so far as to explain how faster than light travel works. Not only do you get all this, but you get some awesome information regarding the alien itself.

The book itself is very well made considering it's labelled as a paperback. The cover is a thicker card stock and glossy on the front while the pages are made from a quality paper as well. The book quality is like what you would find on the Star Wars technical books or better. Definitely bigger than those books.

I wish all sci-fi technical books would go into this much detail with their subject matter. This book is pretty much the standard I look for in other technical manuals. If you ever get a chance to find this one and are either a big Alien fan or just a big fan on these types of books I recommend getting it. For some of you even with the high prices (I think the original list price was around $20) you see in auctions and here you might still find this book worth it.

Interesting book with neat gadgets.......2003-08-04

The book delivered exactly what it was supposed to. The equipment described were mostly from the second movie, which was expected since the colonial marines only made an appearance in that one. I was expecting a few more vehicles and weapons that were not shown in the movie. The arsenal of the marines appeared to be very limited. Whatever the case, this is a good book for fans of the movies and sci-fi fans who like big weapons. The section on the aliens themselves was kind of brief, being mostly accounts from Ripley.

Try just reading the quotes.......2003-03-27

I loved the quotes between the sections. The ones where other Marines are "telling what they heard". You get bits and pieces and everything gets exaggerated and blamed on the Company. It's funny "because we know better." And the descriptions of the APC and dropship are great. Too bad we don't get to see them more in the movie.

this book provides a great deal of information on the Colonial Marines from "Aliens". all of you potential Aliens video game modders out there must get this book. it has served as an excellent reference book for all my "Aliens versus Predator" modifications. with several illustrations, it also provides the artist with valuable "Aliens" info. even the curious Sci-Fi geek will find this book thoroughly interesting.

Intriguing approach.......2007-05-13

This book presents information in a very interesting way. I bought it to see how the technique worked but was amazed to see how much I learned from the various demonstrations. It was very interesting and informative.

Felt a little tricked..........2006-07-21

The two page description of CPR tells all anyone would need to know as a lay person to do what they could to keep air and blood moving for a few minutes. So, the book may be worth having for that very clear description alone.

The picture-hanging diagram was also useful (I never could figure out how to put the nail in the right place so that the frame hung at the height I wanted).

Felt a little tricked by the tie-the-cherry-stem-with-your-tongue diagram. It simply shows the stem go in and then the mouth swish around (from the outside) and then the knotted stem emerge. Absolutely no explation is given. I've read good explanations and saw one diagram on line but hoped to see something more clear to recommend.

On the otherhand, he gives a wonderful inside-the-mouth view of how to blow a bubble with bubble gum.

Overall a fun book. I liked the fact that none of the diagrams are labeled with what they're explaining (so you can flip through the book and try to deduce the point of the diagrams--some are easier to deduce than others). No worry though, the table of contents describes the point of the obtuse.

I guess some of you had hard time figuring out one of those instruction manuals without any pictures, something like "connect the supplied cord with three yellow and 1 green connectors to the rear port of the front panel on your VCR, while pushing middle round button on the left side of the right operational panel..." and so on. Don't you hate it? This book is not an attempt to explain you how to operate your washing machine or VCR. It's a good collection of "instructional manual" illustrations, which don't require any words. Almost all of the illustrations are "manuals" how to: "to propose", "to lasso a steer", "to parallel park your car", "to fold a T-shirt", and 154 of others.
I would recommend this book as a fun read and a good present, although i found it very inspirational.

An entertaining form of design education.......2005-09-08

I've been a fan of the work of designer Nigel Holmes, the former Graphics Director for Time magazine and principal of the firm Explanation Graphics, for many years. His 1985 book "Designing Pictorial Symbols" was very helpful in teaching me, early in my career, to distill concepts down to their simplest forms. With his newest book, "Wordless Diagrams" from Bloomsbury Publishing, Holmes continues the entertaining form of education for which he is known through his publications and public speaking engagements. While not directly related to the practice of identity design, this volume is an excellent creative concepting tool for any designer interested in the creation of logos. Actually, any designer could benefit from the included lessons - and have a few chuckles in the process. The book reinforces the old K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) principle of design I learned in college three decades ago. In simple graphic forms, chronologically numbered for ease of use, Holmes clearly illustrates nearly 100 tasks such as how to wave like a Royal, how to make a snowman, how to pierce a tongue, and how to cremate a body. In addition, readers will also learn how to milk a cow, pour a beer and keep a low-cut dress in place as they are taken on this wordless, visual adventure. overall an entertaining book. but i have a dilemma on where and when exactly to "read" it. it's too small to be a coffee book table; it's not something you'd read in bed. but it's a nice addition to a non-conforming books collection.

As author Richard Hendel notes, designing a book is a complicated process, "especially because there isn't a single way to proceed." Hendel is associate director and design and production manager at University of North Carolina Press, ideally qualified to give a true picture of the life of a book designer.
On Book Design is divided into three sections. In "Looking Like Books" Hendel discusses what makes a book, a book. More than just the author's words, a book is defined by its typography, the size of the fonts, the width of the margins, where the subheads fall on a page. While this may seem obvious, what is harder to determine is the right combination of all these subjective elements. If a reader is paying more attention to the arrangement of the words rather than to the content itself, the design may be overdone.
The book's second section, "The Design Begins Here" describes exactly what it is that designers do-from the big picture stuff (e.g., matching the author's content and tone) to the smallest details (e.g., determining whether to choose old-style or line numbers).
Scattered throughout the book are samples of projects designed by Hendel and others. This is extremely helpful and often fascinating, though on occasion the level of detail Hendel provides borders on the tedious.
In the third section, "How Designers Work," Hendel hands the page over to several respected designers. Some work entirely on the computer; others, like Hendel, use pencil and paper to create their first design drafts. As Hendel notes, "What is important is not the mechanics of making the layouts but finding exactly the right design and typeface for the author's words."

A new classic -- a great find........2000-06-09

This is a new breed of book design; but it is bred out of classicism. Being involved in an antiquarian artform during the dawn of computer technology poses many problems. One of them is the disappearance of really well designed books. So, in an attempt to preserve The Book's integrity, I searched for new guidance on this ancient art. This book ended my search. Rather than quibble with new design trends, resist new technology, or morosely revisit bygone eras, Hendel see these as "points of departure" and sticks to the real issue -- the design of books. The result is not a strict set of rules for book design, rather, it is a fluid and applicable philosophy of design for the many types of books we find today. "The challenge," says Hendel, "isn't to create something different or pretty or clever but to discover how best to serve the author's words." This book is informative, enlightening and filled with lovely samples from distinguished designers. A very beautiful book. Writers will enjoy learning how designers make well-thought creative decisions about the spaces that words flow into.

When Henry David Thoreau made a complete list of each and every possession he had at Walden Pond, he curiously omitted one thing: He forgot the pencil that enabled him to make the list. Successful book design, says Richard Hendel, often goes as unnoticed and unappreciated as Thoreau's pencil. It is, as Beatrice Warde once said, a transparent goblet, so that (writes Hendel) "the very invisibility of its design is to its credit." Hendel should know, having worked for many years as a highly regarded book designer, most recently with the University of North Carolina Press. Thankfully, this is not a prosaic instructional manual--"it is a book about how books are designed," he cautions, "not a book about how to design books"--but a medley of honest reflections about how book designers see, think, and feel. Written by the author and eight other American and British designers, it is illustrated by 110 black and white examples, among them several pieces by Iowa-born designer Merle Armitage and the University of Nebraska's Richard Eckersley, two of the century's most inventive (yet unheralded) book designers. The essential guide to classical book design.......2003-07-02

there is little to say other than the fact that this book is essential reading for all current and aspiring book designers. Tschichold's views seem limiting at first, but his knowledge is based on years of careful research into the basis of our written culture. many will choose to deviate from his instruction in small or great ways, but to practice the craft of book typography (or typography in general) without this information would be unwise.

A must read for any designer........2000-04-04

This collection of 23 essays on book design and typography should be read at least once by all typographers and students of design. Written over a period spanning 42 years, these essays cover many aspects of typography from paper color to tight typesetting to page proportions. A few of the ideas presented in the essays may indeed be outdated now (due mainly to the economic freedoms in modern digital design), but they are few and are still important from an historical persective. Folloowing the rules of design presented here will help ensure a well designed book that does not detract from the contents in any way and best serves to allow that content to speak for itself. Even if you want to always break the rules of design, isn't it better to understand why and how those rules came to be? Of interesting note is that Jan himself was in his youth a radical rulebreaker in his designs, but he learned when it was best to work inside and outside the rules to present the best effect, his design legacy shows how effective he was, and how influencial he remains to this day.

Interesting - but horribly old fashioned!.......1999-08-15

The views are a little old fashioned for me. Mr Tschichold is very much of the old school. He expounds many "rules" of book design, but most of these are his personal taste, and are presented in a high-handed, dictatorial, and condescending tone. There is no room whatsoever for creativity in book design in his view, instead all books must follow his design.

Useful for reminding us of some of the core principles of typography and book design, but if all publishers agreed with the author's views, the book world would be a very boring place. I would like to see a debate between Jan Tschichold and David Carson!!

A masterly exposition of typographic excellence.......1999-08-14

For those who work in design, or those who just love books, Tschichold's work is a must-have. It'll cause you to re-evaluate your own work - and it will also let you look at the books your reads with a new appreciation. The book itself is well-designed, too... as one might expect!

Changed the way I look at books........1999-05-06

I'll never look at a book or booklet again without judging it against the conventions set forth by Mr. Tschichold. Book size, type style, readability, binding, paper, text block placement, aesthetics and a dozen other minor details will not escape the scrutiny of my newfound expertise.

This book tries to be about everything but it`s about nothing. Each part of the book is 5 pages long and only the part about illustrators is 50% of the book. Each illustrator answers same 8 questions and there is 1 of his drawing attached. Boring. For me waste of money.

goes beyond the idea of a probability distribution .......2006-05-15

A belief function is a step beyond traditional probability distribution functions. The latter describe uncertainty. But, by definition, you somehow know precisely that a given pdf is a correct description of a process. A belief function tries to express the imprecision in knowledge about a pdf.

The book is an advanced treatment of how graphical methods can be used to aid in the construction of belief models. Be aware though that the book has complicated ideas drawn from set theory and graph theory. With rigourous derivations of theorems.

Usages are also stressed. Examples are given of how to model failure rates in systems of many parts. Where a traditional probabilistic analysis may be far too difficult or labourious.

Today no family establishes itself without getting a van. But over a hundred years ago, the family had carriage or waggonet.

A well illustrated little book. Most informative on the pre-motor technology of horse drawn transport. I found it a joy to go through.

A Handy Reference.......2005-01-15

This book is a nice reference for anyone with an interest in common types of American Victorian Coaches.

I found it very informative with a clear line drawing of each coach included description of the item, some history, information on the maker, and some historical data to indicate what the use was. The clear black and white drawings are supplemented by plans and by photographs where available, which helps to give a feel of the scale of the vehicles.

I was very pleased to find that not only was information on colors included but they were careful to indicate how many horses pulled the vehicle, and show pictures of the shafts as well as the vehicle.

Generally if you're looking for a simple pictoral reference to show you what these vehicles looked like, and/or gain some feeling of the color and history, you'll be very pleased.

How To Do It...Including Pictures!.......2005-09-27

No, you perverts, not that...this book tells you everything you always wanted to know about instructional design. You know, those little picture stories that tell you how to thread a bobbin, put on a life vest, open a can of sardines, or change the battery in your camera.

The book itself is not well put together -- it could have included more information about where the informational comics came from -- but the cartoons are a hoot! Ingenious, some of them, totally incomprehensible some others.

Look at this book - you will learn something, but look at it at the library. Have some fun looking at the directional comics from other countries. Just don't buy it...I don't think it is worth the money.

This is not one of those `How to design instructional material for Dummies' books (if it was I certainly wouldn't own a copy) but a beautifully designed and printed book with hundreds of illustrations and diagrams showing how designers have attempted to explain, mostly visually, how we should handle everyday technology. Not only technology but simple stuff too, page eighty-seven shows the instructions, usually printed on tissue paper as I recall, on how to complete one of this little wooden puzzles you can buy in arcade shops, this one is for a camel.

Instructional design is serious stuff, a matter of life and death in some cases. The fold-out on page forty-seven shows forty-one examples of those emergency exit and life jacket cards you find in the seat pocket facing you on a plane. Although they all provide the same information, the type of illustration and layout is different in each example.

Simple instructions can be the hardest to put across, just how do you depict, in a simple visual way, the action of washing out your mouth with a glass of water, page 126 shows how with a profile of a boys head and four arrows describing a circular motion printed on his cheek, his hand holds a tilting glass with the water.

Here is a lovely book for graphic designers to leave on their coffee table.

a student of industrial design and looking for information on UI and instructions, this book is great in that it shows a variety of examples of instructions that are good/bad. very colorful and interesting pictures, not alot of specific information though; alot of good quotes and perspectives on instruction information.

Best (and Worst) Practices.......2000-08-03

I was looking for theory; so I was initially disappointed, but once I got past that I started enjoying it as a catalogue of both best and worst practices. It's funny. There's a particularly good example of how to use a toilet bib.

Worth a look.......1999-11-30

Don't buy it if you need to know how to do instructional design, instead enjoy the interesting illustrations and examples through the ages. Worthwhile addition to a well-rounded design collection.

A fun and informative little book. Most insightful on pre motor transport technology. Most fascinating for those interested in history or in Horse drawn Transport.

Some of these little carriages, such as the double decker omnibus and the tree transport, blow the mind in regards to the genius of our forbears in how they applied the technology they had. Then there are the dump wagons.

A must for any library of anyone interested in pre-motor technology.

Wonderful history/reference book.......2003-12-04

A unique book covering vintage horse drawn vehicles of the 19th century. Besides the well written text, I found the illustrations, photos and diagrams amazing in their detail. There are over 250 illustrations. Truly a wonderful reference for anyone into antique transportation history.
