Incredible source book.......2004-09-03
If you can't find a design you can use for inspiration, you're just not looking hard enough. Not for beginners since the designs are incredibly intricate, but your creativity will wake up and take notice.
Super source book.......2004-06-05
Originally, this was a pair of portfolios of designs in the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was not just twisty flowers, though some people like to stereotype it into those narrow parameters. This is not a how-to book with cutting patterns. It has only the paintings with suggested scale. On a few pages, motifs overlap each other, so you can't just scan and go: you have to build up your idea of the covered areas. One pictorial arched piece is missing the right third, again a challenge to finish it yourself.
The designs range from splendidly romantic conceptions of floral forms to windows a-scamper with squirrels or lizards to some that are distinctly eerie. Bats fly across the moon amidst dead trees. A woman combs her hair before a volcano flowing lava. An octopus and a sea-weed maiden struggle underwater--in combat? in love? Several have fishes and there are even cat designs.
You don't have to see these only as windows. I've converted two to rug designs by taking out the excess black lines of supports or piecing necessary to glass work. You may want to take only one area out of an entire design to render in wood, or do a mosaic version of the whole thing. This is a starting point for the competent craftsman who loves the Art Nouveau energy, not an end product.
Not really Art Nouveau.......2003-02-18
Though some of the designs are nice, most are way too busy for my taste, and I wouldn't really call them Art Nouveau. Quite a few of them look more like Renaissance style stained glass, and some of them look modern (like the sailboat patterns?). It is in color, though, which is nice. Very complicated - definately not for beginning stained glass crafters.
Art Noveau Stained glass-Lyongruen.......1999-12-29
Nice plates with dimensions. Good for projects and for idea's. I highly reccomend it.

Inspiring.......2007-01-09
This collection of windows has inspired my creative juices. I have already
used the book to design sidelights and rakehead windows for my front entrance.
Art Nouveau at it's splendid best!.......2004-09-03
Although the designs in this book may not be for the beginning stained glass artist, the color combinations and whimsy incorporated in them will most certainly get your creative juices flowing! I spent several hours just thinking of how I might take just small segments of some of these masterpieces of glasswork to create my own projects. Although Art Nouveau as a whole "look" may be too much for some people, there are certain aspects of these works that are timeless and would fit with nearly any other design genre. Great book for any artisan or craftsperson in search of marvelous design ideas.
Stunning!.......2003-02-18
I absolutely love this book. It's definitely not for beginning stained glass crafters, though - lots of curves and intricacies. I'm looking forward to when I have the expertise to use some of the patterns.
There are 30 pages of some of the best art nouveau patterns I have ever seen. I've already used one of the patterns to create a needlepoint pattern, and I plan on using many more. Even better than I anticipated!

Absolutely Gorgeous!!.......2007-05-18
This book is fantastic. Beautiful images and tons of borders, full-color - breath taking!
poor colour.......2005-11-24
Being a lover of Art Nouveau style, I liked the designs which will be very useful in my artistic endeavours. However, I was quite disappointed with the presentation of colours and sometimes print quality
Book Description
114 gorgeous designs, most created by the noted German artist Arnold Lyongrün, display marvelous creatures of land, sea, and air; graceful female figures, and other delightful configurations. Handsomely reproduced in pastel tones, the organic, curvilinear designs dramatically capture the Art Nouveau style dominant at the turn of the century.

good reference.......2006-03-10
As stated, the book contains all 256 plates. But there is almost no informational material. If you just want to know what was included in this series, this is your reference manual.
a beautiful book!.......2005-08-21
Nice quality with large reproductions, nice heavyweight pages, and great color. Full of inspiring figurative artwork, graphic design, and lettering from a time and place when more work by hand and individual style made it into advertising.
if you can't afford the real posters.......2001-12-31
i collect posters.

Best of Verneuil.......2007-02-28
This book exceeded my hopes. It had many more images in full color than I expected for such a cheap book. I have seen other books by Verneuil and they were half as nice and mostly black and white. I think anyone into decorating, drawing, and painting will like this book. It will inspire you to create art nouveau lines and flowers on your own work.
Good designs.......2006-11-05
If you are into art nouveau, you will enjoy this Dover book. Again many variations on floral themes.
Beautiful artwork, beautiful reproductions.......2006-06-07
I thought the artwork in this book was stunning, and the reproduction quality and colors were lovely. I did have one major problem with the book, two of the main designs on the cover (topmost horizontal design and the center horizontal design) are NOT IN THE BOOK! These are two of the main patterns I planned to use from the book, and now if I want to, I need to get them from the cover, where they are covered by text. I found this to be unacceptable! Please keep this fact in mind if the cover is what won you over.
Fine Art professional point of view .......2006-03-21
This book helps me in my work big time. I'm free freelance artist and right now I'm working on my next big project in Art Nouveau style and I can not imagine my work without this book.
Sit down before you open this one.......2006-01-14
Dover Publications is the friend of anyone with nearly any sort of interest (and not much money). If you're interested in the ways and means of New Art, get this one.
M. Verneuil clearly would have liked the Dover editors. LIke them, he had his wide-ranging interests, in his case in botany, Japanese design, and decorative arts (to judge by his booklist).
This book is a feast that shifts back and forth from stylization and abstraction on one hand to close observation of natural plant forms on the other. One two-page spread (plates 62 & 63) in particular juxtaposes both this reduction into pattern and the accuracy of his eye.
These are the crown imperial and the German iris from Verneuil's Etude de la plante. Side views of each plant give you the random visual complexity of the original -- almost scruffy leaves, in the crown imperial's case. Both set forth the visually overwhelming detail of the blossoms. But, at the bottom of both plates are plan views of a blossom, simple, regular and compelling as a Japanese mon.
If the rest of Verneuil's plant book is this good, I'm hoping Dover reprints the whole thing one day.
When Verneuil moves to greater depths (or is it heights?) of abstraction, the results are often stunning. Don't miss plate 27, an overall pattern of maidenhair fern in shades of orange, or plate 28, a tiled pattern of wild iris in rippling water.
It's interesting to compare the sunflowers in plate 79, apparently a detail from a running line of tiles, with the one in plate 59 from Etude de la plante. The latter captures the petals in wild abandon, the leaves in their rough, almost papery reality. The former flattens and regularizes each leaf, and views the flowers head-on, giving us a literal sunburst of shape and color in complex but regular pattern.
Throughout, M. Verneuil brings a solid color sense, now playing with shades of neighboring hues, now with contrasting hues. Each one seems absolutely right.
You can't open this book to any page without feeling that the mind and eye that originated it were pretty special. It's more than likely that some of this impression is due to the care of Carol Belanger Grafton, who selected and arranged the plates -- many of the two-page spreads seem to delight in comparing, or mirroring, or contrasting Verneuil's designs.
If you like art nouveau, you'll want this book.

Customer Reviews:
Great variety.......2007-05-08
This book is great for giving an all around idea of art deco textile, and art detail. However, I would have liked more information on the designers, years these were popular, the artists, etc.
Beautiful And Inspiring.......2002-07-12
This is an excellent selection of colorful graphic patterns in the deco genre, and should be a useful and inspiring resource to designers, students, and afficianados.
127 Authentic Art Deco Designs.......2000-03-31
This book represents early Art Deco Designs, perhaps even late Art Nouveau Designs. The strikingly remarkable feature is the color combinations, which show the early flavor of the period. These designs were taken from two portfolios of 1920's artists.
There is a full range of figures from antalope and mountian lion to flowers and people. Some of which are highly intricate and ornate, while others verge on the primative. As a source book for a decorative artist (me), it gives subject and theme for any period compositions which can be mounted.
The art is highly styled and ornate, giving a fresh look to the Art Deco Period.
Book Description
Magnificent collection of handsome plates, meticulously reproduced from rare portfolio by Art Nouveau master that illustrated the application of animal forms in decorative art. Not only traditional, appealing shapes of graceful swans, peacocks and dolphins, but also finely detailed depictions of creatures seldom associated with beauty and ornamentation: bats, mice, lizards, and insects.
Customer Reviews:
excellent.......2001-01-16
This is an excellent book containing many different art nouveau animal patterns. The paper used is excellent. All the patterns contain a rich blend of color and the designs are wonderful.
