Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Traveling the world for eight decades, mountaineer, explorer, cartographer, and aerial photographer Bradford Washburn has documented the landscape from the Grand Canyon to the Alps, from Mount McKinley to Mount Everest. Genius has inspired him to pioneer photographic techniques that capture the most remote and inaccessible points on earth under conditions worthy of a stunt man. Genius has also transformed his photos-conceived for a purely functional purpose-into works of expressive art. Now the career of America's most celebrated mountain photographer is presented for the first time in book form.

In Bradford Washburn: Mountain Photography, one hundred large-format mountain photographs, selected from more than 10,000 images, take the reader through Washburn's lifetime of accomplishments. Aerial images of high mountains, looking more like bold relief maps, are captured in extreme raking light. There are picture essays of early Alaskan expeditions-striking modern still lifes of supply caches and camp conditions-plus portraits of team members and colorful characters and situations encountered along the way. Additional aerial photographs reveal, in breathtaking clarity, the workings of the earth, continuously transformed by upheavals and erosions, and the slow march and retreat of glaciers.

I was looking for something different. The photographs are beautiful but they are mostly not of the mountain in which I was interested.

TERRIBLE COPY - FALLING APART - PAID VERY HIGH PRICE AND WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE QUALITY OF THE BOOK. WHEN PURCHASED IT SAID IT WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

4 out of 5 stars Picture the mountains in all their glory..........2003-01-15

This book is a marvelous record of mountain exploration and photography with photos that span a period of almost 70 years. This small collection representing much less than 1% of Washburn's photographs is a remarkable record of photography rivaling Ansel Adams or Vittorio Sella. Although the photos were originally taken to support his geological or surveying research or to provide guide shots for climbers, Washburn soon realized that he had a knack for taking photographs as art that were as good as any being produced by other photographers.

This book may be a disappointment for those who want expedition photographs as few of the photographs include people. Indeed, having a few more pictures of people would have warranted five stars. Yet, many of the pictures are aerial photographs so the lack of people in many is not surprising. What makes it ultimately worthwhile is the crispness of the pictures, the attention to details on the ridges and valleys of the mountains, the patterns revealed in the flow of glaciers, and so on.

One other point of interest is that this book was the Grand Prize Winner of the 2000 Banff Mountain Book Festival -- the only pure photography book to win that award.

3 out of 5 stars A slight disappointment.......2001-07-29

After the exhiliration generated by Washburn's classic book on Denali, this one left me slightly disappointed. There are many exquisite photographs and a few truly great ones, such as the famous picture of climbers on the Doldenhorn (in the Bernese Alps). But on the whole there are just a little bit too many pictures of abstract geological features. These reveal a more scholarly side of Washburn's art: interesting to round out our view on this great artist, but less captivating than the epic mountain pictures. Also, there is an appendix with a detailed account of Washburn's career, with many little inset pictures of people he worked with (Barbara Washburn being the most prominent amongst them). I would have liked to see many more of these pictures and at a size more amenable to detailed study. A final point of criticism on this book concerns the interview with Washburn by the editor: it is very revealing but way too short! I would have guessed that Decaneas would have been able to extract much more material from all the conversations he has had with Washburn in the final years of his life. So, it's a nice book to have in the library, but Decaneas missed an opportunity to put together an absolute classic. Pity.

5 out of 5 stars Museum quality visual images.......2001-03-16

Bradford Washburn roamed the globe for eighty years as a mountaineer, explorer, cartographer, and aerial photographer. In Bradford Washington: Mountain Photography, Tony Decaneas as assembled one hundred full-size landscape mountain photographs from the more than ten thousand images that Bradford made during his lifetime of photographic accomplishments. From the Grand Canyon to the Alps, from Mount McKinley to Mount Everest, these black and white landscape photos of mountain peaks and picture portraits of team members and colorful characters that are each of them museum quality visual images showcasing Bradford's photography as having risen to the level of fine art.

This book presents the latest data on power plants and provides much needed formulas and rules of thumb for sizing equipment based on plant size and arrangement. The book has many examples of equipment and has a good section although somewhat out of date on permitting of power plants. I would recommend it for any power plant engineer especially those just entering the power generation industry.

3 out of 5 stars The recipes from the Betsy-Tacy books.......2006-11-15

My favorite Maud Hart Lovelace book is Betsy's Wedding and I was very happy to find a recipe for Lady Baltimore Cake. I don't think that I will be making any of these recipes and I am not sure it was worth ten dollars but it's nice to know that pre-gadgetry, cakes were being churned out; that eases my baking anxiety.

5 out of 5 stars A trusted friend in the kitchen.......2006-10-26

I clearly remember the day about 40 years ago when I talked my mother into buying a bottle of Final Touch fabric softener, a product she didn't even use, simply because it came with this free cookbook. I was 10 then, and dozens of cookbooks later, this is the one I turn to most often. The pages are brown and brittle, and began falling out years ago. I kept the book together with a rubber band, and now use a Ziploc bag. I want to make sure our family's favorite recipes are available to my 3 sons, so I'm buying this edition now. But I won't throw out my original copy with all its happy memories. Beyond all that nostalgia, the cookbook is phenomenal for all its practical, thorough explanations of food selection and cooking techniques. Outstanding value for the new or experienced cook/baker.

5 out of 5 stars SAVE A CORNER PIECE WITH FROSTING, PLEASE !.......2004-10-16

Fannie Farmer was a favored ikon during my growing-up years in Ithaca. Later, I inherited her revered & well-worn cookbook, and after copying a few choice recipes such as my brother's favorite Snow Pudding, passed it on to an interested daughter.

Now there are other editions to choose from: Penguin published a mini version you might be able to locate on e-bay. It has the chocolate cake of my childhood that must have been concocted in Fannie Farmer's kitchen but I am still not sure if the directions in this 'mini' sampler match my mother's celebrated dessert. Of course, the great treat then was to lick the spoon - - nowadays that fun is spoiled by warnings that even a smidgen of raw egg will bring on an early death. Well! Whichever version of Fannie Farmer's cookbook you explore, you will have great fun reading how things were 'in the good old days'.

REVIEWER mcHAIKU urges you to read Deborah Hopkinson's amusing story "Fannie in the Kitchen" (isbn: 068981965x). These two books could be paired for a memorable shower OR holiday gift. Don't miss either one!

I LOVE THIS COOKBOOK! My Grandmother owned this book and bought my mom a copy when she was married in 1937. When my grandmother died i got her copy. Now my daughter is 19 and moving away from home. I am buying myself a new copy as I am passing on my grandmothers original book to her. It provides all the basic down to earth information that a new cook needs and is not found in most modern day cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Nana to Mom to Daughter to Daughter and now to Grands........1999-11-16

My original copy of Fanny Farmer's Cookbook has no cover, pages behave as falling leaves unless handled with care, but I would not give it up for a new one, never never. What would I do without my years of scribbled notes in the margins? The copies I am buying now are for two granddaughters who are college frosh this year. They will get Fanny, Miss Manners, New College dictionary, etc. to start their own home libraries. Every home need Fanny Farmer because it is basic, easy to read and understand and calls for ingredients readily available - if not on the home shelf then at any grocery. FYI, when the grandson goes off to college he will also get a copy of Fanny to take with him, along with his microwave and a covered frying pan.

5 out of 5 stars What we all hope the fashion magazines would do.......2007-07-18

This book covers everything from what is in your purse to the bottom of your shoes. Its 365 calendar day style makes it ideal to impart a lot of information efficiently; at first, you may focus more on the beautiful graphic pages that help you put together twelve fool-proof outfits (one per month). The second time through the book you may focus more on the general style improvements--adding a Pucci print; how to incorporate animal and Ethnic prints into a wardrobe without looking costumey. Finally I went through the book as it was intended, one page per day, and chewed over the food for thought Lloyd Boston gives: investing in an elegant pen that can reinforce a good impression; taking care of clothing and shoes properly; when to shop for coats and swimsuits.

The author provides something very few fashion books do: specific outfit construction ideas that are generic enough to fit anyone's wardrobe. His multitude of combinations helps you rearrange what you already have into something stylish and classic, making it easy to incorporate new and trendy pieces in with your elegant staples. It does what we all hope those fashion magazines will do for us every month.Practical and useful, it will expand your wardrobe without you buying a thing.

5 out of 5 stars Best of its Kind.......2006-12-03

I've read many other style books lately, but this one has been my favorite. Lloyd's tips are so original and smart...he goes farther than any book I've ever read. There was so much new and original advice that I would have never thought to try! The book has 365 style tips, one for each day of the year. I checked this book out from the library, however, and read the whole thing in about a week!

I will most likely be buying this book, because, even if you did like I did and read the whole thing in a week...you can't remember EVERY tip. It's going to be something you're going to want to keep on your shelf and turn back to time and time again when you're style needs a lift, or when a certain outfit needs a boost.

Another thing I liked is how it's not ALL about the clothes. The book is about how to make a complete head to toe ensemble. It describes shoes, scarves, hats, coats, jewelry, and how to wear all of those things to a lady's best advantage. Also, scattered in the book, are hair and make-up tips that were useful. Lloyd also talks about how to not just look great, but FEEL great. It's amazing.

Any woman can pick up this book and find many, many things to help improve her look and her life. I guarantee it.

5 out of 5 stars Lloyd, I liked it.......2006-11-06

This may not be a guerrilla manual, 10-steps-or-less, 10-seconds-or-less book but it is a purposeful, satisifying book on getting dressed each day. The conversational flavor is as a stylist imparting wisdom to a client/friend. Each day's subject is a pick-me-up, a thoughful bit of fashion to chew on when you dress that day; and fashion being the encompassing subject it is, perhaps it is best handled in a meditative, chipper fashion is it is through-out this book.

Very helpful is that it is organized by month: reading about capri pants in January is irrelevant, however you can go straight to October - or June - as necessary. I learned a lot from this book and I thought I knew a lot. You can always learn more. The spotlight reviewer that 'yawns' over the book makes me wonder as to how she views fashion - as a crash'n'burn way to get thru the day - or, as Lloyd presents it, a clever, fun subject we all need to give thought to to stay on top of with a smile. Great job, Lloyd. I appreciate your effort, and treasure my copy. And have recommened it.

5 out of 5 stars I refer to It All the Time.......2006-10-04

Of all the style books I have purchased (which would be about a dozen--I try hard), this is by far my favorite and the one I turn to the most. Lloyd Boston gives direct, helpful, daily advice to anyone and everyone who is willing to learn. I have had so many compliments on my wardrobe--almost daily compliments--since I have tried to put into practice his suggestions. It is not hard to do, you do not have to figure out what style you are, what colors are best, what season, etc.(Although if you want to do that, Trinny and Susannah's newest book is handy for that.) It also does not have to be that expensive. You may have a lot of what he suggests already. It is his mixing and matching that makes the outfit. Reading the book is like having a stylist in my bookcase, waiting to help inspire me. It is friendly, readable and not condescending in its approach. Although not every day's suggestion is useful to me, overall the book is more than I expected. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Lloyd makes everything clear?.......2006-09-29

Lloyd's book solved SO many questions for me. The easy layout and straightforward advice helps me decide what to do with all that stuff in my closet! The beautiful illustrations make it coffee-table beautiful. Lloyd defines the difference between being trendy and being stylish (which lasts forever!).

4 out of 5 stars Just right for the maxed-out parent.......2007-09-07

I have two copies of this book for two of my girls. I agree with some of the other reviewers that it might have been nice to have a bit more accommodation for scrapbook-type items (early artwork and such), but I like the book's artwork and its allowance for a few pictures for each of the first 5 years. There are plenty of pages with "priming" entries for the time right around baby's birth. This isn't for heavy-duty scrapbookers, but is just right for overworked parents who still want to create a nice baby book for their child to cherish.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected..........2007-03-08

This review is solely a matter of personal taste as I was debating on this book or Humble Bumble's. The other reviews led me to believe this book had plenty of poems and nice illustration, however, I disagree. Again, it totally serves its purpose for the relevant memories and not bogging one down with tons of writing. It would be very easy to keep up with and had a soft, earth-tone, classy design. I was simply looking for something brighter and more colorful and also needed a few pockets for storing keepsakes, which this one does not have. I ended up returning it and ordering Humble Bumbles which has bright colors (not overbearing), photo frames, plenty of pockets, and very busy-parent friendly. I felt the use of lines from well-known nursery rhymes in A Baby Book for You did not qualify as meaningful poetry and the illustrations were dull and a bit boring. Humble Bumble's has cute pictures, nice rhymes baby will also eventually enjoy, and touching quotes on every page. For those of you who do not like bright colors, do not need a lot of storage space, and don't have a lot of time on your hands, you may really like A Baby Book for You.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for a Busy Mom.......2007-01-04

This book prompts you to fill in the data on the pertinent events, but isn't overwhelming with details. I had twins and have found it easy to keep up with recording the data and adding pictures, so they will have a record of their early years.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but not as functional as I expected.......2006-01-13

After reading the great reviews, I decided to purchase this record book for my 3rd child, a girl. I was disappointed when I received it for a few reasons. For one, the packaging was terrible and it is really rainy right now. The book got damp and all of the pages are "wavy" now. Secondly, the pages are all shiny, so when you try and write with a pen, you have to let it dry forever before you can close the book or it transfers to the other pages. Not conducive to writing information at all when you have to let each page dry before you can go on to the next. Thirdly, there are absolutely no pockets to put in locks of hair, the hospital bracelets or other memorabilia that you cant just glue to a page. Oh, and there is no space anyplace for footprints - and even if there were, the page material is slippery. The basics of the book are nice, the details are cute but not over the top - but this just isnt what I had in mind for quality.

2 out of 5 stars Ok but not for me.......2005-08-17

I loved the art and rhymes in the book. However, there was a lot of fill in the blank spots for your baby's first few years. I prefer to jot my own thoughts instead of someone elses. There is not much place for pictures or extra writing either. I wish it had at least one pocket for storage of keepsakes. I will look for something that meets my needs.

      Book Description

This book celebrates the 200th anniversary of the historic Boston Athenaeum, one of this country's earliest and most prestigious repositories of books, paintings, sculpture, engravings, maps, photographs, manuscripts, decorative arts, and other artifacts of history and design. Acquired Tastes is the first in-depth, scholarly study of the Boston Athenaeum's collections and the manner in which they were gathered from the early nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. These topics are expanded and brought into sharper focus in fully-illustrated catalogue entries on a wide variety of objects that represent the breadth of the Athenaeum's holdings.

From its founding in 1807, the Boston Athenaeum's primary mission has been to provide collections that stimulate study, discussion, and debate on all topics of interest to the enquiring mind. In the Enlightenment of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries--the historic period that saw the founding of the Boston Athenaeum and similar organizations--it was believed that intellectual endeavors more easily germinated and thrived in an atmosphere that was spacious, comfortable, quiet, and aesthetically pleasing. Here, books and manuscripts could be preserved, logically organized, and made accessible, and utilitarian objects could be logically grouped with didactic ones for comparison and discussion. In this setting, too, fine examples of paintings, sculpture, drawings, and engravings fulfilled their traditional purposes of education and inspiration and--together with those from the world of science--stimulated imaginations, im proved morals, and refined aesthetic tastes. Celebrate the Boston Athenaeum's 2007 bi-centennial with this lavish tribute, published in conjunction with one of the most ambitious Athenaeum exhibitions ever mounted.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book with fabulous houses and pictures!.......2005-08-20

I saw this book and as soon as I started looking through it I fell in love. This novel chronicles the expansive mansions on Boston's North Shore, with black and white photographs of both the exteriors and interiors. These pictures made me feel like I was part of that life, and helped me understand how people actually decorated those "Maderley" type manor houses. I was shocked to know families actually lived in them, and furnished them so lavishly!

For anyone who is a fan of architecture or old houses, even victorian decorating, check this book out! I love old houses and seeing the way people decorated them, and this HUGE book took me further in than I ever expected. Some of these have blueprints, which helped me figure out the layout of these grand mansions, and how many rooms there really were.

      5 out of 5 stars Boston Brilliance.......2005-07-15

This is a beautiful book and a great follow up to the book on Chicago's North Shore. These books are so luxurious and elegant, the craftsmanship is just amazing, I highly recommend both. It is wonderful to explore this well researched and interesting book. The black and white historic pictures are crisp and detailed and the history well researched. Anyone who has any interest in historic estates or just appreciates fine craftsmanship in a book will not be disappointed. I commend the authors and publisher for a job well done.

More than just casual mail pieces, these postcards were often designed by prominent artists and had a visual impact that belied their modest format. Remarkably beautiful examples of graphic design in their own right, they also reflect the influx of Western currents such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Art of the Japanese Postcard presents 300 full-color examples of these cards, culled from the remarkable Leonard A. Lauder Collection. They are astonishing not only for their beauty and the quality of their printing, but also for the insight they provide into contemporary Japanese art. Authoritative essays by leading scholars of Japanese art and culture, plus a statement by the collector himself, highlight the design, development, and cultural function of these rarely studied, but highly influential and visually exciting, expressions of graphic genius.
