A must purchase for every tatto parlor.......2006-12-22
You think I'm kidding, but I am not. I do not know how many times I have searched the calligraphy books for "Old English" for proletariats who wished just the correct typography to permanently stain some dopey word to their body, apparently to guarantee a lifetime of minimum wage employment. This is just what they are looking for. 100 pages of fonts, one of which is guaranteed to meet the victim's expectations. So, you do not need to be a calligrapher to buy this book. A tattoo parlor or even a public library will find this book indispensible. I'm not kidding.
perfect book.......2006-11-10
lots of complete fonts, Capital, lowercase and numbers. has everything i wanted so i could practice and master any style i want.
Book Description
It's as easy as ABC to create beautiful scrapbooks, cards, and other decorated projects with these vintage alphabets and classic ornamentations. From ornate Victorian lettering to antique word tile images, from baroque initials to cherub letters, the range of charming designs offers something for everyone, and really turns an ordinary page into something memorable and unique. Use them to make monograms or labels for a journal, to write an irresistibly lovely message, or to embellish a memory box. Some of the alphabets are pretty as a picture just shown off as is.

Another type of image file would have been better........2007-02-13
Though the images on the CD are nice, the whole concept would have benefited from using an image type that supports transparency. As they are presented here, the individual images have to be cropped (either manually or on the computer) to eliminate the white background. This is especially annoying with bits of lace or doilies, in cases where you might want to apply the image to a darker background.
I also would have liked to see some actual fonts included (not all the "alphabets" are even complete... sometimes there are only two or three letters). The selection of images is nice, though, so I'll give the book two stars.
No Fonts But Good Graphics.......2006-10-30
I was dissapointed that none of the "alphabets" are actual fonts, so you can't make your own titles and such. You can only use the few individual letters they provide. But the graphics on the cd are easy to use and easy to crop to the size you want.

NOT WHAT I HOPED FOR.......2001-11-26
THE COVER OF MEEHAN'S "ILLUMINATED LETTERS" IS MISLEADING. THE COVER EXHIBITS THE VIBRANT AND RICH COLORS THAT CELTIC ILLUMINATION IS REKNOWN FOR, BUT UP0N OPENING THE BOOK, I WAS DISAPPOINTED TO FIND NOT A HINT OF COLOR. COMPLETELY BLACK AND WHITE. THERE IS AN INTRODUCTION, BRIEF BUT INFORMATIVE, AN EARLY DEVELOPMENT CHAPTER, MAJOR INITIALS CHAPTER, DECORATED ALPHABET CHAPTER, ANIMAL ALPHABET, AND TWO DECORATED AMPERSAND CHAPTERS; WHO USES AMPERSANDS THAT MUCH?! I THOUGHT THERE COULD HAVE BEEN MANY MORE EXAMPLES OF ILLUMINATED LETTERS (NOT AMPERSANDS) FOR THE 160 PAGE VOLUME THAT IT IS.
Celtic lettering so anyone can learn it.......2001-07-29
This book makes Celtic lettering styles accessible to anyone. As great as Meehan's other books.
An excellent book for those interested in Celtic Designs........2001-03-30
This is an excellent book for those looking to create celtic designs.
This book teaches about the development of illumination. It then goes into the major initials, decorated alphabet, decorated ampersands, the animal alphabet and animal ampersands.
The book is best used when accompianied by Aidan's other Celtic Design books. I have 7 of the books in this series and love them all!
All in all this is a great book for someone looking to create celtic designs.

Book Description
Of all the ornamental applications of Celtic art, the decorated letter is perhaps the richest. Aidan Meehan's brilliantly creative study of the great Celtic manuscripts underpins this wonderful collection of sixteen alphabets. From sixth-century birds to late medieval Celtic dragons, from early Celtic spirals to the later Tree of Life, more than four hundred drawings cover the whole spectrum of Celtic ornament in its most useful form, as well as the fascinating evolution of the letterforms themselves, from Roman to Irish Gothic. Celtic artists, designers, calligraphers, and craftspeople will find it an invaluable work of reference and inspiration.
Customer Reviews:
SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE COLORFUL.......2001-11-26
I HAVE TWO OF MEEHAN'S BOOKS, "CELTIC ALPHABETS" AND "ILLUMINATED LETTERS" AS WITH ILLUMINATED LETTERS, I WAS DISAPPOINTED AT THE LACK OF COLLOR IN CELTIC ALPHABETS. THERE IS SOME COLOR: BLACK AND ORANGE OF ALL COLORS! ALTHOUGH IN THIS BOOK, THERE ARE 16 ALPHABETS, I WOULD HAVE BEEN PLEASED TO SEE THEM ILLUMINATED LIKE THE CELTS MEANT THEM TO BE: BEUTIFULLY AN RICHLY COLORED.
Celtic Alphabets, is right........2000-02-08
If you are looking for some great examples on celtic alphabets then look no further. This book contains pages of colorful, inventive celtic lettering and design. Very little history but if what you want some of the most beautiful writing in the world then this book is the one for you.
Nice, useful, but not well documented.......1998-03-27
The book is much larger than Meehan's usual Celtic Design books, and he makes good use of the space, providing sample alphabets to copy in many different styles (humans, rabbits, dogs...). However, as always, he's rather light on sources, which makes it hard to be sure he's right. A skilled artist who was looking at it with me spotted at least one point where the arrangement looked too modern; our best guess was that, where he couldn't find an example of the particular letter in the particular style he wanted, he made it up.
Book Description
Exceptionally rich selection of 30 authentic alphabets and dozens of individual letters and ornamental devices taken from the Westminster Abbey monuments of Richard II and Henry III, French prayer books of the 15th century, the stalls in St. George's Chapel at Windsor, and many other sources incorporate vines, flowers, leaves, faces, and other graceful ornaments.
Book Description
Treasury of royalty-free fonts with eye-catching appeal includes Carnival Open, Ecclesiastic, Garland, Laurel, Daisy Delight, scores more. All fonts include uppercase alphabets; some contain punctuation marks and lowercase letters. Most have numerals. Graphic artists and illustrators will find these distinctive alphabets ideal for use in display ads, on posters, signs, menus, etc.
