For those who have read Fools Crow by Thomas E Mails should follow up with this book. If you have not read it I would sertainly do so as a companian to this book. Timeless Wisdom from the Old Lakota Holy Man that anyone can bennefit from the power of these teachings.

5 out of 5 stars Superior insight .......2007-04-11

For a person interested in American Indian Medicine People, this Book, and it's companion book - Fools Crow, ISBN 0-8032-8174-9, will
read a Treasure of insight, clarity, simplicity & wonder. This reviewer has been reading books on this subject for more than 40 years, and these 2 books are the true Treasures of this world view. Fools Crow is a magnificant.

2 out of 5 stars inconsistent and somewhat hard to believe.......2007-03-15

Fools Crow Wisdom and Power is interesting in that the memoir is an account of a Sioux "holy" man. Yet, Fools Crow's holiness is not consistent. He has some good ideas about general spirituality but this is more of a plea for the Native American movement.
I read it for a graduate class in religion but was disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should have this book.......2006-12-13

A great man, a great vision. An example to every human being who walks upon our Mother Earth. One that should be followed in every aspect of life. If only there were more like this man what a better world we would live in. Inspiring, encouraging. What more can I say than this is a MUST have on your bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars a master's methods.......2003-06-27

thomas mails' honesty and humility in recognition of the potent and vibrant personality of fool's crow allows him to become a nearly transparent medium for this account of a shaman's personal methods and rituals.

at their most effecftive, shamanistic rituals use p[hysical symbols to trigger and continue cycles of effect and reaction between the individual practitioner and the world-system as a whole. this book doesn't go into great depth in presenting the fundamental metaphysic of the native american heritage that fool's crow continued, but provides a rich and meticulously detailed account of demonstrations of its practice by a healer, teacher and leader.

this book may tempt immitators and pretenders; they might find themselves playing with fire. this volume should not be taken as a single source outside of the greater context of the heritage it celebrates and partially describes, but it can be a valuable supplementary resource for a careful student, or the agile and humble explorer.

My son is in 2nd grade and they're doing a unit on Native Americans. We read this book together and enjoyed the story as well as the beautiful illustrations. This book also lends itself to do the shadowbox project that goes along with the class studies. I enjoyed the Navajo concept of how the stars are patterned in the sky. We would recommend this book for the 7-9 year old group.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Culture and Dunamic & Creative People.......2002-06-06

This book is very enlighting on the myths and belifs of the American Idian and their cultural beliefs.

A very dynamic people and culture that has survived a long enduring time of trials. The "white man" taking over their lands and alienating them from the very soil they sewed for hundreds of years.

Mystical beliefs, omens and the rverence of the people in their communities and how everyone was imprtant to the whole.

THis is book is a beautiful example of what makes the Native American people so special, unique and strong. Read it!

5 out of 5 stars Authentic and Poetic.......1999-04-05

In 1928, Aileen O'Bryan recorded the narration of Sandoval, Hastin Tlo'tsi hee (Old Man Buffalo Grass), then "first chief of the four chiefs of the Navaho People." His nephew Sam Ahkeah acted as interpreter. This book was originally published in 1956 as "The Dine: Origin Myths of the Navaho Indians," by the U.S. Government Printing Office, as Bulletin 163 of the Bureau of American Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution. As this transcription is both authentic and poetic, I recommend it to the general reader as well as the scholar.

Book Description

Although Cynthia Ann Parker never recounted her experiences as a captive of the Comanches (1836-60), her story is probably the most familiar of all the pioneer women captured by Indians in the Southwest. Margaret Hacker's five years of research have produced a balanced and dependable account of this tragic story.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Cynthia Ann Parker: The Life and the Legend.......2007-09-01

I suggest reading this book before reading "Ride the Wind". It serves as a chronicalled historical foundation before reading the novel "Ride the Wind" that will definitely prepare you for an unimaginable journey into the world of the American Indian of 150 years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Straight-forward, focused, no frills or detours.......2002-05-30

This is a compact history ... but it does just what you want - gives what history is known of Cynthia Ann Parker. This is an excellent resource if you are wanting to know about Cynthia Ann Parker from the settler's perspective - the people she left behind, the family she had come from, and the search for her that continued throughout her 'captivity'. The author seems to steer clear of any area of conjecture, such as why Cynthia Ann got shuttled between family members after her return or what may have happened to her pension, and sticks only to documentable history. She also avoided sidetracking into the history of Cynthia Ann's famous son or the other people in her life except for as far as they pertain to Cynthia Ann's life. Focus is very tight, very informative.

5 out of 5 stars The West's Most Famous Indian Captive.......2001-06-12

On May 19th, 1836 nine-year-old Cynthia Ann Parker, a member of a group of religious families occupying Fort Parker in Texas, witnessed the massacre of friends and relatives by combined bands of Caddos, Kiowas and Comanche warriors. Abducted by the Comanches, Cynthia was raised for the next 25 years as a tribal member and became "fully" Comanche, giving birth to Quanah Parker, the last Comanche Chief and one of the most influential intermediaries of his time, a representative of both the Native American and White cultures. Abducted a second time as an adult by a well-meaning Texas Ranger, Cynthia Ann was forced to return to White society, but mourned deeply for her Comanche family, ultimately starving herself to death out of grief.

Much lore and legend has grown around the story of Cynthia Ann Parker over the years, and it has often been difficult to separate the myth from the reality of her dramatic story. However, Margaret Schmidt Hacker has done just that. Over a period of five years, Ms. Hacker painstakingly researched the archives in Texas, Oklahoma, California and Washington, D.C. and objectively weighed all the accounts of Cynthia Ann's life. The result of her efforts is what is considered the most authoritative book on the subject. Although scholarly, it is at the same time, a gripping drama of the Texas prairies, and very readable by anyone with an interest in the Old West. Highly recommended reading.

5 out of 5 stars Examining the Myth.......1999-10-15

Countless folk tales and sagas have focused on the story of Miss Parker, a captive of the Comanches for more than 15 years. Many of them deal only with her years as the mother of the famous Quanah Parker. Author Margaret Schmidt Hacker devoted five years to researching the life of the Cynthia Ann to reveal the history behind the myth. This is the tragic story of the abduction of a nine year old girl who returned reluctantly to white society when she was 24. A fascinating portrait of her life among the Comanches on the Texas frontier.

    Book Description

The well-guarded cosmology of the Apaches comes to light through the wisdom of these traditional teaching tales.

    • Told by the granddaughter of the Apache elder Ten Bears.

    • Includes 13 stories of the Tlish Diyan (Apache Snake Clan).

    • Provides contemporary insights into these legends to make them relevant to the modern reader.

In a small canyon in the White Mountains of Arizona a young girl sits and listens to her grandfather's stories. They tell of a people known as the Tlish Diyan, or Snake Clan, and how they came to be. She learns the story of her parents and grandparents, uncles and aunts, and an entire lineage that weaves between four leggeds, two leggeds, spirits, ancestors, ritual, adventure, and the creation of the world by Changing Mother and the Giver of All Life. In this way she comes to know and find her place in All Our Relations. This child is Maria Yracébûrû, granddaughter of Apache holy man Ten Bears and the hereditary recipient of his philosophy, legends, prophecy, and knowledge.

In the traditional storytelling ways of her ancestors, Maria Yracébûrû respectfully weaves her contemporary experience into the tapestry of tales passed down from generations. The legends of the Tlish Diyan she presents in Legends and Prophecies of the Quero Apache relay how sacred universal laws govern our relationship to the natural world, our interaction with nature, and our respect for each other.

An elder of our people, the Apache, once said that Maria's words were like "arrows that were shot into our hearts to awaken our souls." Truely the memory and spirit of the Sierra Madre (Quero) Apache lives on in this book!

    5 out of 5 stars Life-Changing.......2004-12-20

Maria is an amazing woman and an amazing author. I have had the pleasure of attending many of her workshops and ceremonies and she has helped me embrace living my life with joy. Where before I felt disconnected with my body, now I live in it gladly!

When I read this book, it reminds me about having passion and vision for life. It is so refreshing to read something that comes from the heart of someone so warm and loving as Maria. When you read this book, you cannot help but get past your own limitations.

    Thank you, Maria!

      Book Description

In this traditional Native American tale, a mute boy is spiritually linked to a magnificent elk from the day of the boy's birth. The two are companions until the elk is killed, leaving the boy a precious bequest: its antlers, around which a cedar tree grows. From that wood the boy, now a young man, makes a beautiful flute, on which he plays to woo his true love. Luminous illustrations accompany the moving story of a boy whose animal spirit brother helps him find his voice and fulfill his destiny.

This lyrical poem follows Kokopelli, the god of dance and music, as he travels through the moonlit desert playing his flute and inviting the desert animals to join in his dance. Coyote, Snake, Tortoise, Javelina, Jackrabbit, Tarantula, and the sleeping children of a nearby pueblo accept his invitation, and joyously follow this pied piper of the Rio Grande in his midnight dance.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Story for Creative Drama or Dance.......2003-02-27

I found Marcia Vaughanýs Night Dancer to be a wonderful, evocative book to use in my creative drama classes with primary aged children. It's a great piece for integrating the artsýmusic, dance, and dramaýinto the classroom. The children in the class for six and seven year olds are currently preparing to enact this story in a showcase for parents. The characters of Kokopelli, and the different desert animals like coyote, javelina, and snake, are vivid and easy for the students to act out, equally appealing to boys and girls, and a great way for them to explore different qualities of movement related to those animals. The lyrical language features words that describe a wide variety of movements that weýve exploredýgrowing and stretching, stepping and stamping, sliding and gliding, snapping and clapping. The children have created their own choreography as they weave about following the leader and chanting the repeating verse sung by Kokopelli. Weýve listened to Native American flute music and we may use it to underscore the procession of animals dancing behind Kokopelli. The children love the mysterious and three-dimensional illustrations that pull together desert landscapes from different parts of the Southwest to create an ancient mythical desert setting. And the poetic use of language by the author is helping them discover the concept of personification by acting out how moonlight can ýsweep away darknessý and how music can ýrush through arroyosý or ýwhisper past pueblos.ý The fact that the story starts in silence, then builds to a joyful climax, then disappears again into silence is a helpful one for this energetic group that needs to learn how silence and stillness can be powerful in a performance. I give this story high marks for anyone who works with childrenýs literature as a basis for drama and dance.
