This book is instrumental in providing much needed information regarding the childen's writing and publishing industry. It is a must for all writer's of children's literature. As a writer in the juvenile field, I recommend Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market to all who are beginning children's authors. Writer's Market covers all kinds of publishing from books and magazines to textbooks and contests, including children's books. Most of it is not of interest to someone focused only on juvenile writing.
Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market is invaluable because it not only lists the many worldwide markets for children's books, but it gives specific information on writing for children, lists the types of books each publisher puts out, and includes tips by publishers on what they require and expect at their publishing house.

I've recommended this book countless times for patrons during my twenty year library career and now I am using it for myself. Not only are there helpful, instructive articles by professionals about the publishing industry but the 750 listings help to narrow down the search for a publisher, rep or agent. It may seem daunting at first but the editors do most of the work for you. Getting work published is a send and wait game so sending the work to a firm ready to look at your work makes the process easier. CWIM includes professional conference as well as agents, art reps and of course publishers and magazines.

Anyone who is a Writer will tell you the Writer's Market is the bible and if they haven't, I am telling you now. This is a Children's Writers & Illustrators bible. Everything you will ever need to get started is all in this book. I am currently writing a children's book and will be illustrating it myself. I must credit this book for giving me the necessary resources. They even include tips from published Writiers to motivate you on your path to getting that manuscript out. Admit that you are a wasteaholic.......2007-08-01
Any organization, large or small, that wants to get serious about growth should read this book, breathe it and master it. The first step is to admit you have a problem. "Hello, my name is Bob. I'm a wasteaholic."; "Hi Bob".
I used to HATE process. HATE HATE HATE. I didn't want to be constrained; I rationalized saying "well it is a waste of time to invest time in process, it is just needless bureacracy". I was a creative person, still am. Then 10 years later I realized I was wasting a lot of time because things weren't organized, there wasn't accountability, the projects were driving me, instead of me being on top of things.
Are you a wasteaholic? Answer this question: Do you feel on top of things?
If answer = yes, close browser window. If answer = no, order book.
Book is dead on.
Several years ago I interviewed for a staff position at Cornell University, in a dept. run by a guy who had spent a number of years in industry; I wanted to impress him, so I asked, "are there any books you'd recommend, out of all you've come across, about project management and content?" And he said "Managing Documentation Projects" -- which is the precursor to this book.

In this book, JoAnn T. Hackos has compiled a great amount of useful information, "decorated" with many illustrating sample cases.
Well-structured, intelligible and applicable, "Information Development" is a welcome asset, although with 600 pages, it is nothing you read - least of all SHOULD read - overnight. :)
New book -- not 2nd edition.......2007-06-04
Please note that none of the reviews below are written about the 2006 new book on Information Development. The book is not a 2nd edition; it's an entirely new book with new content. The focus is on strategically managing a publications organization and effectively managing projects. The project management part of the book focuses on agile methods and managing topic-based writing activities.
Author has nothing to say and takes too long to say it.......2007-01-06
I bought this book because I liked the table of contents. I assumed this book would present concrete, actionable specifics on the subjects presented in the table of contents. I was disappointed.
Under information planning, this book only tells you that you should do it. Gee, thanks. Under estimating and scheduling - you should estimate future project resources and you should request new resources and fund innovation. Oh, boy. Yippee.
This book is an exercise in stating the blatantly obvious. I expected to see information on the nuts and bolts of producing technical documentation...I expected to see examples of budgets, examples of ways to create efficient systems for document production using single-sourcing, and to see examples of specific, important techniques for planning a document production process that allows for easy translation, revision, re-usability and transfer to different mediums. I expected to get a reference that would become well-worn on my desk. This book is as far from such a tome as it could possibly get while still being written in the English language.
I want to improve the efficiency of my documentation projects. I'd like to know about technologies (XML?, VBA?) that might help me with separating content from layout and improving reusability. Is that here? Nope. But you do get way too much talk about how you should acquire good tools that support your business goals. There is nothing about what those tools should be or what specifically would make them good.
One page tells you the difference between a "traditional" project and an "agile" project...things like: An agile project "responds to change" and has "minimal process documentation" as well as "reduced development schedules". That's nice. Who cares?
Implementing a Topic Architecture is the only section that even makes a move in the direction of specific, concrete, useful material. But even it leaves you thinking, "Well, duh...yathink?"
To sum up, this book tells you all the obvious things you ought to do...but that's it. It doesn't have anything to say about HOW you would actually do those things. I doubt the author has the foggiest idea how because I doubt she has a single hard skill to speak of. She definitely didn't write about any.

GREAT FOR THE ASPIRING COMIC WRITER!.......2003-05-28
This is a great text that takes you through the creative process of several unique writing styles. The variety of script and drawings from a host of authors, really made this book encouraging to the aspiring comic writer. I'm looking forward to getting Panel Two when it comes out.
Why didn't some body think of this sooner?.......2002-05-07
It seems like such an obvious good idea.
It's a wonderful glimpse into the creative process.
Just received it last night, and I'm already half through it. I haven't done that since I was eleven and got Stan Lee's How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. Not that this book has any similarity to that one. This is not a how to book. Its a more intimate, than any instructional book. Its a similar difference in experience to watching a biography to reading someones private correspondence. The presentation adds to the feeling as well.
Better than seeing pencils, better than watching a demo, or hearing someone try to explain the creative process. You actually see it and are part of it because this is what the artist sees, while he is in the process.
As a comic book fan for years and creative hopeful (which I believe is a large part of the intended audience), I hope this is first in a long line.

Cool, helpful, worth the read.......2002-04-04
One thing that's bugged me in my various efforts at writing a comic book script is that no reference I checked seemed to agree as to what format is right. As this book explains, that's because there IS no "right" or "wrong" format, just different ways to do it.
Every script in this volume shows you something. Gaiman's reads like a personal note to the artist, Wolfman shows how plot-first can work, McDuffie shows you how to work in a recap, Kevin Smith shows a more movie-script style of writing and Kurt Busiek's entry... heck, when I read the original comic book I thought it was one of the greatest comic book stories I ever read, but the script for "The Nearness of You" just made it all the more powerful.
If you want to try to write comics, you could do a lot worse than picking up this book.

Dreadful.......2007-05-21
This book was required for a graduate course in visual communications. The book is written in a style of chest-puffing academic balderdash that renders it useless and unreadable. Crummy paper and truly ugly illustrations add to the miasma. I usually keep classroom texts but I'm selling back this one. I won't get much money though because it's so poorly bound that it looks much more used than it really was. Poor unlucky student who buys it.

The content of this book is not bad, but the actual quality of product is horrendous.
I have had this text for about a week and the pages have already become unbound. Some of the pages look like they were printed on a photocopier running out of ink. The text is fine, but the graphs look terrible. One would think that a book about design would have put more thought into their own design and production run.
My gripe is simply that this book is too much money for the truly piss-poor physical quality. $76 for a book whose binding became unglued in the first week? $76 for a text whose pages look like they were printed on with an empty toner cartridge? This is a sick joke! Designing Visual Language is a piece of junk and Allyn & Bacon should be ashamed of themselves for having no quality control.
Addendum...
I'm wondering why people have not found this review helpful. Is it because they want to buy a book that is poorly made? If so, I invite you to buy the book. Unless Allyn & Bacon make some serious changes, you'll soon think, "Maybe his review WAS helpful after all!" but by that time you'll be out $76.
Designing Visual Language.......2001-07-14
It reads kind of like a text book, but the information is very good. I am trying to learn about graphic design in my free time and this book has helped me to better understand the basics of visual communication. I have also reciently read "The non-designers design book", which I also recommend. This book starts at the beginning and helps you to understand what you must do, and take into account in order to make something visually pleasing. It has helped me in my design efforts. The book was lent to me and now I plan on buying it, it was so good. I might even look into the rest of the books in the series. (The Allyn & Bacon series in Technical Communication) All in all a good book. I give it 4 stars

The rules of good newspaper design.......2007-07-03
Tim Harrower provides a very practical guide to newspaper design. The art of newspaper design tends to be very subjective, so this book lays down some facts and guidelines to put to rest some of the indecisive elements of design.
For a beginner, this is a book that will give you the confidence and understanding to conquer page layout.
The CD gives the novice an even more practical guide than the book can deliver.
One criticism is that the book is printed on light gloss stock and is spiral bound. I am not sure how it was survive rough treatment.

A must have .......2007-06-14
When I accepted my first "real" job in journalism as a page designer for a local weekly I was struck by a horrifying thought, I really knew nothing about newspaper design. I had done it before for my college paper, sure, but this was the big time. I needed a refresher course and I needed it fast... Tim Harrower and this spiral-bound book came to my rescue.
Although it was first published in 1989, this book will be relevant as long as newspapers exist, even in this age of computer design. Harrower explains and shows why certain designs are good and bad and he approaches it in a situational, problem-solving format. For example, he explains what should be done when you have to design a page with no art, when you have butting headlines, or two horizontal photos etc. Harrower says that most page designers stumble into the job and from this point of view he explains what exactly, a good design is. This book will always be on my desk.
(I wish my publications professor used this instead of the worthless $105 monstrosity he made us buy (and that we never used by the way).)
So, after some mild freaking out followed by a lot of reading, I can start my new job with confidence thanks to this book.
Practical and useful for the professional.......2006-07-22
I am an editor these days.
I came on this book quite a few years ago when I was a sub. It was recommended to me by an old hand in the newspaper game.
Without doubt, it is the single best aquisition I have made in terms of newspaper design.
In the places I have worked, I have been regarded extremely highly for my layout skills.
This book, with a little creativity, is the basis of almost everything I do in terms of layout.
If you are serious about the newspaper game, get it, study it and then apply what you learn. It will help our career enormously.
Awesome Textbook.......2006-03-19
This textbook is awesome. I've never seen a better textbook. It lays everything out, and makes it simple to understand. It tells you what to do and what not to do in simple language and clear pictures. It's one of few textbooks worth keeping for future use in your career (provided you're going into the newspaper industry)!

I ordered the hardbound and got the spiral bound, a product worth $12 less. It was then that I discovered there is no way to express a complaint to Amazon: no phone number, no email address, no human help. All that is available is a maze of pre-written web help, none of which includes "credit my account $12, since I don't want to go through the hassle of sending this book back." What's up, Amazon? Don't you want satisfied customers? I spend literally hundreds here each year. This egregious deficit needs to be fixed immediately. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book.

This should be required reading for anyone starting his or her career in publishing, or for any author considering self-publishing.
Most of us have no intention of designing or laying out our own book covers and interiors. We need this book in order to get the best work from the designers and artists we hire, and the best prices from our printers. If you are intending to do your own cover or interior design and layout, you absolutely must study this book first.
You need this book even if you have graphic design experience in other areas. Books have certain unusual design constraints and conventions. This book gives you the type of specialized knowledge that normally comes from painful experience.
Ugly but Informative.......2007-09-28
What a paradox! For a book about book design and production, this book has a shockingly ugly cover and interior design - the author would have done well to follow his own advice and hire a real designer to do it. That being said, I have still found the information contained therein quite useful. If the reader can get past the encyclopedic tone, uninviting layout and lame cartoons (which to me scream "amateur self-publish job"), there is a lot of good solid information. I will keep it handy for reference - I just won't leave it anywhere my clients can see it!

This is a worthwhile purchase. If you're entering the publishing business, you need this book (unless you're already pretty savvy). Lots of valuable insights and "how to" stuff. It's a book I'll use as a reference book over the years.
