5 out of 5 stars Children from Australia to Zimbabwe: A Photographic Journey Around the World.......2007-01-15

I use this book in my grade 4 classroom. The pictures and writing help my United State's students better understand the world around them. This book is a favorite in my classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Put this in your car.......2005-11-13

Stunning photographs, concise maps, and simple text that introduces the basics of a culture, a country, and a way of life make this book great "back seat" reading. Kids shouldn't be watching tv in the car anyway. Books like this will make the ride more enjoyable and enriching. It also would be a great addition to a pediatrician's waiting room, or a dentist.

3 out of 5 stars Lost in Translation.......2006-05-01

English is a simplistic language when compared to a great many other languages. It simply doesn't have the same potential for subtle nuances, rhyming, and other things of that nature. With that in mind, it's always hit-or-miss as to whether a translated poem will carry the same impact in English as it did in its original language. That, I would say, is one of the problems with this book, and it's not the book's, nor Naomi Shihab Nye's fault.

As the other reviewer said, some of the poems are quite good, some are obscure, and some are downright puzzling, and I imagine those particular ones, in their original language, had a lot more clarity of vision and feeling. The cultural backgrounds are a pitfall, as was also stated, though if a reader has a small knowledge of world history, the captions at the bottom of each poem which state the country of the author's origin are a great help. For example, when reading a poem about scrounging in the jungle, looking for a few scraps of rice, AK-47 in hand, it helps to know if the author is Vietnamese.

That notwithstanding, some of the poems are simply confusing, and I am an English major, and some, also due to the translation, I imagine, seem more like straight-forward prose.

All in all, This Same Sky is a good collection, and it does a very good job representing a broad cross-section of the world. It's just a shame the English language doesn't do the works justice. So, with that in mind, it's the translation's fault that I only gave the book 3 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Poetry from around the world.......2004-04-11

Naomi Shihab Nye has collected over one hundred poems from poets all over the world. The poems are about many things, including nature and families. While the details of the poetry (items, animals and birds) are foreign, the feelings expressed are familiar to us all.

Some of the poems are funny, like the one from Altazor by Vicente Huidobro, many others are sad ("My Life Story" by Lan Nguyen and "Behind Bars" by Fadwa Tuqan). Some poems are puzzling, like "Petrified Minute" by Zoltan Zelk and others make you want to know more of the story behind them, like Ruth Dallas's "A New Dress" and Gu Cheng's "A Headstrong Boy." There are poems that create beautiful mental images, and poems that leave the reader bewildered and vaguely disturbed (Tony Perez's "Volunteer Worker").

While the words have been translated into English, much of this poetry is difficult to understand. Many poems would be almost meaningless for a reader with no frame of reference to place the poem in. The poem "Jerusalem" by the Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai is one that a reader with little knowledge about the history of Palestine would find puzzling. The brief Notes on the Contributors at the back of the volume help explain a little more about the poets, but to truly understand some of the poetry more background information is needed. This collection is not one most children will fully understand on their own.

Book Description

How about a nice dish of Colonial Squirrel Pie with a side of milkweed shoots? If that doesn't grab you, you might think about trying some Garbage Stew, just like they made in medieval England. But if you're feeling a little tired and need a boost, your best bet is roasted spiders. They've got three times the protein of cooked beef. (Is your mouth watering yet?)

Illustrated by the wildly-creative Eric Brace, It's Disgusting -- and We Ate It! is a fascinating look at culinary creations from all over the world!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book!.......2007-01-11

I first checked this book out from the library for my son when he was 3 1/2 years-old. He was transfixed as I read to him all the different types of things that people have eaten and still do eat today. Instead of being grossed out, he wanted to try them all! He loves squid and seaweed and is just dying to eat some grasshoppers. We ended up buying the book after checking it out twice in a row and I'm so glad we did. When he was 4, he took it in to share with his Montessori pre-school class. Last year he took it into share with his kindergarten class. And this year he's taken it into his 1st grade class twice; once to share and once to "prove" to his teacher that bugs really ARE a good example of a protein-loaded food. Fabulous, interest-grabbing format and illustrations just add to the great information within. A great intro to cultural studies, too.

5 out of 5 stars Gross but Interesting.......2006-11-03

This is a very neat book, a little gross for me but the boy that I'm gave it to loves it (11 yr. old).

4 out of 5 stars Just Eat It!.......2004-05-29

An excellent little book with sensational illustrations. This book explores some of the foods from around the world which different cultures enjoy, but which may seem disgusting to us. Everything thing eaten is not in here but there is a good selection. What was eaten throughout history around the world is also included.

My favourite section is part three - Strange Stories from your own Kitchen which explains what cows eat and how that food gets turned into the milk which we drink. There is also similar information on how bees make honey.

There's also a few recipes and 19 poems as well. I am not really into poems so they didn't do much for me but if you are into poetry then this may well be a bonus for you. The illustrations in this book are sensational though, and worth the price alone.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing what human beings will eat, even if not on a TV show.......2004-02-29

If you thought that after watching the tribe members on "Survivor" trying to eat local insects and assorted delicacies the past few years there was nothing left to turn your stomach at the dinning table, then this book will quickly set you straight. "It's Disgusting and We Ate It!: True Food Facts from Around the World and Throughout History" has author James Solheim and artist Eric Brace giving young readers a taste of what can be done with seaweed, squirrels, spiders, earthworms, maggots, birds' nests, violets, and even mammoths (Hey, it could happen: remember the episode of "Northern Exposure"?).

The book is divided, like Gaul, into three parts. The first looks at the exotic tastes found around the world, the second looks at some of the more interesting dishes in history, and the third is an eye-opening look at some of the facts behind contemporary American favorites, such as the hot dog. There are a few recipes, mostly having to do with things you could actually cook today with some effort and parental guidance, along with poems, charts, tables, stories, and a map. The big question is whether or not the idea that something "tastes like chicken" (e.g., grilled guinea pig) is a universal goal. I mean, if it tastes like steak or lobster, would that be a bad thing?

"It's Disgusting and We Ate It!" is also educational (spiders having more protein than beef made my day though why the giant ones from New Guinea taste like peanut butter is beyond me), even if you decide never to try python in vinegar, horse blood, or cicadas fat with eggs (even if Aristotle did recommend it as an after school snack). But mostly it is just involves the fun of thinking that in another time or another place people actually ate these things, which will just make the information go down easier.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Gross! And That's COOL!.......2003-04-07

I've got to meet this author! He's got a wonderful sense of humor and is able to capture the "just gross enough" aspect of human nature. If you have a child who loves to pretend he's eating real worms in front of his little sister just to gross her out, you NEED this book. I love it, cover to cover.

Book Description

Did you know Korea is a mountainous peninsula about the size of Utah? This country's project is a jeweled crown. The Gryphon House book . . . let my daughter and me learn about crafts from parts of the world where we have relatives and friends. We can make a fiesta dancing hat like those worn to celebrate the planting season of Ecuador (where my friend Lora served in the Peace Corps.) and paint our faces like the Kathakali performers in India (where my brother-in-law is from). It's global fun.-Port Arthur News, Texas

". . . a wonderful compendium of plans for everything from an Ecuadorian dancing hat to Greek bread dough coins. Authors MaryAnn F. Kohl and Jean Potter give one-page instructions for more than 135 projects that are thought provoking and amusing. The illustrations offer a map showing the geographic location of each project's source, as well as what the finished item can look like. The authors toss in a valuable historical or anecdotal tidbit just to make Mom or Dad or the Babysitter look that much smarter. Betcha didn't know that evidence of ice skating was found among Roman ruins in London or that an Austrian wedding calls for a specially painted chair. Now you do, and here's a project to prove it!'-West Coast Weekend

"Everyday art for children is presented in a project title which gathers a range of multicultural art pursuits, from Peruvian Silver Wind Chimes to creating Chinese Printing Presses. Illustrations are in black and white but this project-packed guide needs little color to prove valuable to young audiences."-Wisconsin Bookwatch

1 out of 5 stars Not A Mention Of Islamic-Arabic Art? Wow Sombody's Biased.......2003-06-28

The Global Art book barely mentions an Iraqi and Iranian piece of art however it chooses to limit the children's scope from Islamic art. I view this as another biased piece of work that is keen on dividing the world rather than a simple tool for educating children about the world or so called "GLOBAL ART".

4 out of 5 stars Global Art.......2002-02-22

A very resourful book. The authors misspell Colombia.

5 out of 5 stars Love those Kohl books........2000-06-12

I enjoy all of MaryAnn F. Kohl's books, and this one is a little different than her others as it has a bit more in the way of finished products, though they are all arrived at by discovering and creating. Still, this book works well for those older kids who want a little more "fact" in their art. My favorite chapter revolves around Asian projects, in particular those from Japan.

5 out of 5 stars Kids Love to be Fascinated.......2000-06-09

Thanks for the help! My kids love to be fascinated, as do all kids, and this book makes it easy. I love how the chapters are organized by continents, and how the projects are not so much copying crafts from different countries, but actually incorporate history and inventions and all kinds of things from different countries into simple, easy to do art projects. The chapter on Antarctica is a kick! It's all projects about snow and ice and white paint. My kids love it! Works for all ages, too, from preschool through about age twelve I would think.

5 out of 5 stars Proves Fairy Tales Aren't Just for Kids.......2000-04-05

Fairy tales and folk tales are for all ages and about all ages. The amazing Jane Yolen edited this collection of tales that are often overlooked or forgotten. The tales, as the title implies, focus on older characters instead of the younger ones we often read about in Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Yolen has collected tales that will be of interest to any reader looking for a different focus when reading fairy tales and folklore. The multicultural sources emphasize the presence of elder characters around the world. This book would be particularly great as a gift to a parent, grandparent or other person who first read you a fairy tale as a child.

Shirley Climo is well known for her retellings of folktales and Cinderella stories from different cultures, such as The Korean Cinderella. In this lovely treasury she spins tales of princesses from China, Russia, South Africa, Germany, Guatemala, and Greece, as well as one story from The Arabian Nights. Each story is enhanced with a lush painting by the noted illustrator Ruth Sanderson and an introduction summarizing other related fairy tales and the origins of the story. The princesses and their tales are all different, but they all have one thing in common: they all live happily ever after, of course! (Ages 6 to 10)

    Book Description

From the Mayan people of Central America to the Xhosa people of Southern Africa, from the ancient mythology of China to the legendary Arabian Nights, every culture across the globe has its princesses. The princesses themselves may be as diverse as the lands they represent, but rich or poor, vain or wise, brave or spoiled, they have one thing in common: they all live happily ever after. Selected from world folklore and presented in a richly designed, elegantly illustrated volume, this lavish gift book is the definitive gathering of princess lore.

This is a beautifully written and illustrated book for all ages. Young and old, male and female. My husband bought me this book for my birthday, knowing my love for princess lore. I'm now reading it to my granddaughter and grandson.

Ms. Climo presents seven stories from seven very different cultures. She includes introductions to each story that explain a little of the magic you're about to discover. Each story has a wise and meaningful message.

Down to earth Princesses; a wise Princess; an enchanting Princess and a determined Princess along with the untypical stories of a curious Princess; a stubborn Princess and a spoiled Princess all manage to captivate your heart and sigh as they all "live happily ever after".
