Customer Reviews:
Where is the color?.......2006-02-21
Very disappointed. All black and white line designs. Not what I wanted at all.
must have.......2003-05-12
Arabic Geometrical Patterns are not so easy to find, not to mention understand their knowhows, this book clearly displays a very wide array of examples with simple step by step instructions displayed on the same platform, i was searching for a book like that, this book is quite enough, it is not for novice beginners though, you need to have some background in such subject as the text and discription for each chapter is very limited, and the book is totally black and white, so you have to figureout what color combinations are suitable. But the layout of the book makes reprouducing the wounderful examples easy.
Geometry made easy.......2001-05-21
This book has an extensive variety of geometric patterns that can be use by a Math teacher as well as an Art teacher. The designs are easy to reproduce. The display of the designs are big enough for students to try out and experiment. I greatly recommend it.
Geometrical Designs in Black and White.......2000-05-04
This book is full of different patterns for use by craftsmen. Unfortunately, it has no color illustrations, and no information about sources for these designs. It is more like a coloring book than a resource for designs. However, it does have guidelines within each design to show how the design was created, and I find that useful.
Book Description
Since the mid-twentieth century Ugaritic studies has witnessed an enormous increase of edited texts. Naturally, but scattered in numerous publications, at the same time huge advances have been made in epigraphy, grammatical analysis and lexicography.
The current dictionary is an updated and considerably augmented English edition - prepared by W.G.E. Watson - of G. Del Olmo Lete and J. Sanmartín, Diccionario de la lengua ugaritica. It systematically brings together all insights gained so far, and provides answers to numerous existing lexical problems by applying new techniques of lexicographical analysis, and at the same time drawing from conclusions reached in other branches of Semitic philology.
The work is a complete inventory of words (morphemes) and meanings, affixes and proper names of Ugarit as studied so far. With isolexemes, full bibliographical references and translations in context.
A true, modern and indispensable key to understanding Ugarit.
Book Description
Here are 141 designs and motifs in authentic full color from classic 19th century work by noted French historian — a visual vocabulary of Islamic decorative art.

beautiful but disappointing.......2007-10-16
The pictures are wonderful examples of patterns. I was looking for something with more depth explaining the structure and construction of the art.
Book Description
With more than 200 examples of the best in contemporary Arabic typography and graphic design, this book is an illustrated primer on how to work with Arabic and understand and respect its cultural nuances. For an array of reasons, the worlds of business and communications rely more and more on the cross-hybridization of Latin and Arabic graphic design approaches. As the book reveals, it is a process that can yield incredibly innovative, beautiful and successful results. Without the proper knowledge, however, creative campaigns and endeavors, not to mention the money invested for such efforts, can easily be lost. Visual examples and case studies span the range of graphic design applications ? newspaper and television news typefaces, book jacket designs, logotype conversions, art. Designers of all sorts will have a guide to proceed with their own projects. Arabic for Designers is the first book of its kind to delve into these issues in a way that makes itself useful for non-Arabic speaking graphic designers regardless of their industry, ability or level of experience. Arabic for Designers is an extension of Mourad Boutros's life work. Compiled from over 40 years of working with an array of corporate and creative clients, his approaches to working with Arabic clearly provide the groundwork upon which designers will be able to apply their trade. Boutros addresses the rise in global awareness about Arab cultures in ways that inform and inspire. This book is an invaluable reference for design students, design professional, marketers and anyone interested in Arabic as a language and design application.
Customer Reviews:
A Book Most Timely.......2006-10-08
Arabic for Designers is a necessary, practical and very timely book. Mourad Boutros puts so much of the recent mis-communications between the West and the Middle East in a broader cultural (and graphic) context. I've already given copies to American relatives and to a young Scot who is studying Arabic, so that they can understand not only the language but also the wider culture. My next gift will be to our well intentioned Pope, who should have read this sensitive, tolerant and beautifully produced book before his recent scholarly lecture in Germany.
Simply Great.......2006-09-23
A fabulous book. A great tool to help understand the Arab world through graphics and calligraphy...
It is today my favorite coffee table book, and I am planning to buy more as Xmas presents, to friends who may benefit from better understand the Arab world.
A Must for every Marketing Manger dealing with the Arab speaking World.......2006-09-13
Arabic for Designers is a much needed insight into the changing face of communication in the 21st Century. The author skilfully and tactfully offers the reader an insightful introspective on the need to recognise that the written word is as powerful symbolically as it is directional or explanatory. The political landscape being as it is, the book addresses key issues not just for the Arab speaking world, but also to western designers and the need to recognise the cultural and sociological effects of the influences each culture has on the other.
When raising important questions about cultural expansion and the need for greater understanding, the author highlights the issues with over 200 pictorial examples and demonstrates an astounding depth of knowledge and sensitivity to the Arabic mindset, whilst pointing out the need for those in the West to seek greater understanding of the historical and social imapct of the coming together of cultures.
It is the evolution of cross cultural design where the author comes into his own, highlighting exceptional examples of the hybrid of cultural communication, the pitfalls and successes, whilst at the same time offering caveats for the future, and insights into how and where new designers can create for a changing and demanding new world.
A highly recommended book, offering any designer a distinct advantage where one is creating communication patterns, with a changing and complex language.
Much needed text for cultural understanding in design.......2006-06-18
A report released on 6 June by the Thomas B. Fordham Institute finds that at a time of rapid globalization, most U.S. states don't even try to provide young Americans with a solid grounding in world history. That's why books like Arabic for Designers are more relevant than ever for designers to read and to absorb for today's globally competitive market. Arabic is now used in 23 countries and is spoken by over 300 million people. Although feelings about Arabic cultural integration may still be colored by events like 9/11, western businesses have sought to expand brand recognition to appeal to Arabic speaking people.
To that end, Arabic for Designers incorporates over 200 black and white and color examples of the best in Arabic calligraphy and graphic design. Beyond a current focus on design and advertising transitions, chapters also deal with historical backgrounds and cultural intricacies involved with the Arabic language and mindset. The focus is devoted to Arabic and Western Latin, or America and English-speaking Europe, but other global-reach advertising problems are included to expand on the difficult processes that are involved in cultural expansion and understanding.
The evolutions are universal, and the author notes this fact when he states that, "As the application of language change, so too does the identity of its speakers." This transition is visible in the examples of how the Arabic and Latin typography blend to create new cross-cultural designs, which are explained through text and illustrations that range from corporate products to fashion to fine art.
Mourad Boutros speaks from experience, as he has worked to combine traditional Arabic calligraphic techniques with the latest technology and materials for over forty years. Boutros has achieved more than just a beautiful book with this publication, however. He's reached across cultural boundaries with text that's missing in American history, social studies, and design books. After a designer reads this book, he or she will have an absolute advantage over anyone who attempts to understand the mysteries and beauty hidden within Arabic typography and culture.
Melding Arabic and Latin Based Languages for a Shrinking World.......2006-04-29
Mourad Boutros has achieved far more than the anticipated function of this lavishly produced book, ARABIC FOR DESIGNERS, as a primer for those who seek to understand the rhythm and flow of the Arabic language in creating commercial avenues for communication. While this book works very successfully on the level of a teaching tool for designers, with well over 200 pages of extraordinary examples of the beauty of Arabic creative work, the general reader will find in this volume a worthy introduction to understanding the flow of Arabic calligraphy, the manner in which the liquid letters weave into images of communication far better than the Latin based characters, and hopefully result in an appreciation of Arabic art and culture and beauty that has eluded our literature to date.
After a wise introduction 'Arabic in the World Today', Boutros wisely divides the book into chapters: Historical Backgrounds/Calligraphic Styles/Aramaic; Elements of Typography (Arabic vs. Latin)/ Typeface Technology and Development; The Value of Cultural Knowledge; Logos; Currency Design/Basic Arabic; and the final and glorious Gallery. In this last section (as well in the generously illustrated previous chapters) the book is devoted to some of the most sophisticated and subtle design work for books, advertising, pamphlets, labels, photography integration, and simply stunning images of Arabic calligraphy as art in and of itself. The book includes a fine glossary of terms and a useful bibliography.
Yet the most touching part of this lovely volume lies on the final cover flap where writer Boutros' philosophy is stated: 'All of these subjects covered within hinge on the idea that language carries the identity of those who speak it and it is a formative influence on how those people view their world around them....Arabic and its speakers have entered an era in which they must achieve a balance between tradition and the realities of the contemporary world'. This is a book for artists, yes, but it is also a volume that speaks loudly for cross cultural understanding and mutual appreciation. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

The photos are beautiful! But the images on the CD Rom are low level scans. I got better images scanning the book myself.

Book Description
When the tenth-century Kamil as-sinaba (or al-Kitab al-malaki) of bAli ibn al-bAbbas al-Magusi was adapted for a Latin-reading audience by Constantine the African in the late eleventh century, the medieval West had, for the first time, the opportunity to use a text which covered the whole of medicine. But the 100-odd extant manuscripts suggest that Contantine's Pantegni was put together over a considerable period of time, and chapters from other Latin and newly-translated Arabic medical works were added to or substituted those of the Kamil. This book is the first to be devoted to Constantine the African: it sheds light on the School of Salerno and the formation of a medical corpus in the High Middle Ages.

Book Description
The theme of this richly-illustrated book is the impact and image of the Maghrib and of the Levant on European learning and culture during the Renaissance and the Golden Age, with special reference to Antwerp's pivotal position as a great trading and printing city. Publication of the English language edition is timed to coincide with an exhibition of rare books and manuscripts at the Plantin-Moretus Museum of Printing History, taking place in Antwerp in late 2001/early 2002. It includes an extended introduction by Alastair Hamilton accompanied by a list of the exhibits. The majority of the exhibits derive equally from the holdings of the Plantin-Moretus Museum, and from the Arcadian Library, an outstanding, private library dedicated to the history of Levantine influences in Europe. This volume will be the first in a series of books on orientalist themes to be published by the Arcadian Group in association with Oxford University Press: The Arcadian Library Series of Studies on the Relations between Europe and the Arab and Islamic World. Fuller details of this title and series will appear in the next Quarterly Bulletin.
Book Description
One of the world's major forms of writing, Arabic script became widespread as a result of Islamic conquests of much of the world. The Koran places great importance on writing, and in the first verse of the holy book, reading and writing with the calamus, or reed pen, are praised as the source of all knowledge and all spiritual or scientific paths of change. For this reason the Islamic world is known for its reverence for books, as well as its love of writing. Eventually Arabic script gave rise to calligraphic art, which became an art form of astonishing beauty. More highly regarded than painting, Arabic calligraphy is approached aesthetically like music, with its own rules of composition, rhythm, and harmony.
This enlightening book helps us discover an alphabet that throughout the centuries has been linked to the secular and religious worlds of Islam. The text explains the history and meaning of each letter, as well as its philosophical, theological, and cultural significance, and 300 two-color and black-and-white pictures illustrate the letters, their variants, and calligraphic adaptations. An ideal book for linguists, graphic designers, and collectors of Islamic art, Arabic Script will also prove handy for travelers who wish to become familiar with the rudiments of the alphabet.
Customer Reviews:
Just buy it ! (if you like Arabic).......2003-12-11
This is a really beautiful and informative book, a true collectable. Wish I had a first edition. If you love Annemarie Schimmel's books, you MUST buy this. It would be a great present for anyone interested in Arabic, and I haven't seen it in any of the Arabic bookstores.
Disappointing.......2003-04-19
I'm afraid I must start by saying I haven't read the English edition, but the Italian original. I approached it with high expectations, which were dashed.
Why did I find it disappointing? Perhaps I was expecting a bit more content; instead the book had the feel of a book thrown together to create a book. This is even more true of his companion volume, 'L'alfabeto ebreico'.
The illustrations seem too small to provide a useful guide to the caligrapher, and tend to concentrate - like to many books on Arabic calligraphy - on the illumination to the detriment of the calligraphy itself. The book also relies too heavily on Arabic typography, which isn't really the same as calligraphy, and which so often breaks the canons of calligraphy, with the result of seeming both ugly and hard to read.
I'd like to have know far more on the tradition of calligraphy and the calligraphers themselves; a more focused investigation of the styles used and how they've developed; a useful bibliography.
All in all, disappointing.
An insight to Arabic culture through its calligraphy.......2002-01-05
This richly illustrated volume on Arabic calligraphy is truly a feast for the eyes. The book begins with a brief introduction on the evolution of the Arabic script from its pre-Islamic origins to its blossoming into the many calligraphic forms we see today. Examples of the script throughout its development are provided, from early Nabatean scripts to modern attempts at introducing capital letters. Particularly interesting is the letter from the prophet Muhammad to Mundar ibn Saui (the script used by Muhammad is a bit different than contemporary Arabic script). In the next section, each letter is individually given at least a two-page discourse on various calligraphic forms, the symbology associated with the letter, its current use, how the letter relates to the Qur'an, and pronunciation of the letter (e.g. the Arabic letter 'shin' is used as an abbreviation for path and to Sufi mystics 'shin' symbolizes personal destiny). The final section shows examples of texts, manuscripts, and other sources depicting the wide range of calligraphic styles. Examples include excerpts from Qur'ans, from medieval-era scientific treatises, from talismans, and from other sources dating from antiquity to the present. The glossary at the end of the book, though too brief, is quite helpful.
This book is more about the artistry that is inherent in the Arabic script rather than on teaching the reader how to write Arabic letters - and you don't need to know Arabic to fully appreciate the artistry. Khan's work will be a welcome addition to the library of anyone interested in Islamic art, culture, or the Arabic language.
WOW !! What a great book..........2001-08-11
This book is well thought out. Extremely informative. It has lots and lots of pictures. The best part is for those of us who are trying to teach ourselves Arabic Calligraphy, and are somewhat limited in reading Arabic. The author gives full details on the calligraphy along with dates, english translation, etc. There is no guess work, the author assumes you don't have any Arabic so, if you don't have an arabic teacher, this is the book. Informative, easy to read and full, full of detailed information, the author was very generous with pictures.
I know you will enjoy it.
Definitely a good buy.
Covers both the history and meaning of each letter.......2001-07-06
Gabriel Mandel Khan's Arabic Script considers the styles, variants and adaptations of arabic script, covering both the history and meaning of each letter. A highly recommended pick for a specialized audience of college-level students in either language or art.
