Book Description

In the 1960s Claudia Roden introduced Americans to a new world of tastes in her classic A Book of Middle Eastern Food. Now, in her enchanting new book, Arabesque, she revisits the three countries with the most exciting cuisines today—Morocco, Turkey, and Lebanon. Interweaving history, stories, and her own observations, she gives us 150 of the most delectable recipes: some of them new discoveries, some reworkings of classic dishes—all of them made even more accessible and delicious for today’s home cook.

From Morocco, the most exquisite and refined cuisine of North Africa: couscous dishes; multilayered pies; delicately flavored tagines; ways of marrying meat, poultry, or fish with fruit to create extraordinary combinations of spicy, savory, and sweet.

From Turkey, a highly sophisticated cuisine that dates back to the Ottoman Empire yet reflects many new influences today: a delicious array of kebabs, fillo pies, eggplant dishes in many guises, bulgur and chickpea salads, stuffed grape leaves and peppers, and sweet puddings.

From Lebanon, a cuisine of great diversity: a wide variety of mezze (those tempting appetizers that can make a meal all on their own); dishes featuring sun-drenched Middle Eastern vegetables and dried legumes; and national specialties such as kibbeh, meatballs with pine nuts, and lamb shanks with yogurt.

Claudia Roden knows this part of the world so intimately that we delight in being in such good hands as she translates the subtle play of flavors and simple cooking techniques to our own home kitchens.

What a beautiful, well laid out, and enjoyable read this cooking book is.
It brings the feel and culture of the countries into the recipe sections. The meals that I have tried are excellent, very easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Like exploring the world without leaving your kitchen.......2007-08-06

"Arabesque: A Taste of Morocco, Turkey and Lebanon" shares a delightful collection of recipes, each of which makes you feel as if you are experiencing a vibrant part of another culture. From Tala_ Börei, which takes you into the kitchens of Turkey, to Moroccan Briwat Bi Tamr (Dates Rolls in Honey Syrup), spending time with this book is akin to taking a culinary trip around the Middle East. Each chapter includes an introduction to the cuisine & history of the part of the world it seeks to represent. It is in sections like these that we learn, for example, about Lebanon's history as a feudal state and how interactions between Sunni Muslim, Greek Orthodox and Ottoman culture influenced the cooking we recognize as Lebanese today. Such socio-historical tidbits are sprinkled throughout the book, while chapters are organized into sections about "starters & meze," "main courses," and "desserts." Many recipes are accompanied by mouth-watering color photographs, so that this well-bound, artistically presented book would make a lovely coffee table book when you're not using it in the kitchen. Most of the dishes I tried were truly delicious, opening my eyes to new spice combinations and flavors. It was not until this book, for instance, that I would have thought to add cinnamon, pine nuts and currants to a meat dish (vegetarian meat dish in our kitchen, but the principle is the same), nor would I have thought to add pomegranate molasses and cumin to a salad. On one or two occasions I wasn't thrilled by the final result, but one cannot expect to fall in love with every recipe in a cookbook, especially one that is composed of meals so dissimilar from what you eat on an everyday basis. Recipes do assume that you have a firm grasp of basic cooking principles but at no point is this a hindrance. With internet access just a step away it is an easy thing, after all, to verify what "stiff egg whites" look like (Alton Brown did an entire show about this) or what greek-style yogurt is. Overall this book is a worthy addition to any collection - if you buy it and want my advice, make the Briwat Bi Loz (Almond Pastries in Honey Syrup) first. Not only are they easy to make, but the combination of crispy fillo, crunchy almonds and sweet syrup is hard to resist. Variations with confectioners sugar & orange blossom water are included for even more delightful exploration of this Moroccan dessert.

I just love this book, the stories and recipes. I bought three and gave them as gifts, and I think I'll keep buying some more!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-05-12

Claudia Roden manages to amaze me every time. Each book is distinct and the theme for Arabesque is summer. She offers a lot of grilled items, eggplant favourites, lots of lemon, olive oil and amazing desserts and not one bad recipe! She is a gracious, generous, loyal to all who taught her recipes and just lovely. This book makes a great present.

5 out of 5 stars Yum.......2007-05-10

Roden presents Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines with delicious results. The recipes are clear, easy and just plain good. Try the zucchini fritters "kabak mucveri," the roast shoulder of lamb with couscous and date stuffing "dala m'aamra bi keskou wa tmar" or prawns in spicy tomato sauce "kimroun bil tamatem." A glossary would have been a good addition and the book's organization by country is a bit awkward, but the index is thorough and broken down by ingredients. For the cook interested in this food genre, I would also refer them to books by Wolfert and Heiou, as well as Roden's previous writings. A terrific addition to any cook's library.

If you haven't read all the books in the series then you should definetely pick them up. This is another excellent book by Ms. Alers. The only reason I put it down was so the story wouldn't end so soon. Hopefully she will come up with another exciting series that her fans will enjoy!
Kudos for Ms. Alers!!!

1 out of 5 stars Give me a break!.......2007-06-22

To L.D. Brown of Compton, CA - you really aren't missing any thing. All of Alers characters in this series are the same. The characters are all perfect and too predictable. I've read several of her books (like a fool) and can't for the life of me point to one that I could honestly say I enjoyed or that I didn't toss aside at some point during reading because the characters just got on my nerves. They are multi-racial, speak several languages, own a conglomerate, are the wealthest African-American family in the U.S., have their own island, have private jet(s), recipients of Oscar and/or Grammy awards, are spies, and of course reside in Palm Beach Florida in sprawling mansions. The women of the Kirkland/Cole/Diaz clan are basically breath taking, strong-willed with great hair and carmel colored skin and the men are all attentive, strong and gorgeous with gray eyes, green eyes, whiskey colored eyes. Like I said give me a break! I put Alers in the same category as Brenda Jackson another writer who utilizes cookie cutter characters with no depth and plots that make me just cringe. And please whatever you do, do not think of these books as examples of romance. They are about sex, Don't get me wrong. I'm not a prude but, I do like characters with some astuteness and convincing plots. Please deliver me from characters who jump into bed and then wonder later who they just slept with and never get the questions answered right up until the day she's walking down the isle pregnant on her wedding day.

3 out of 5 stars "I Need To Read From The Very Beginning".......2007-05-31

I'm new to Ms. Alers' Hideaway series and from what I've read so far, it's an o.k. novel. Like the title of my review says, "I need to read from the very beginning" to get a better understanding of it all.

3 out of 5 stars The history was out of order.......2007-05-24

as a stand alone this book was great but if you have read all of her work you will see that this book recreates history.

Micheal and Jolene's daughter Teresa was born before Tyler and Dana met, remember he was babsitting her when he talked to Dana on the phone. In this book they were already married and adopting their daughter who they didn't adopt until after their biological child Martin was born he isn't even mentioned in this book....all out of sequence..there was some other things as well which made the book harder to read.

As a stand alone book though the book is good!

Book Description

Just out of college, Patricia Hampl was mesmerized by a Matisse painting she saw in the Art Institute of Chicago: an aloof woman gazing at goldfish in a bowl, a mysterious Moroccan screen behind her. This woman seemed a welcome secular version of the nuns of Hampl’s girlhood, free and untouchable, a poster girl for twentieth-century feminism. In Blue Arabesque, Hampl explores the allure of that woman, immersed in leisure, so at odds with the increasing rush of the modern era. Her tantalizing meditation takes us to the Cote d’Azur and North Africa, from cloister to harem, pondering figures as diverse as Eugène Delacroix, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Katherine Mansfield. Returning always to Matisse and his obsessive portraits of languid women, Hampl discovers they were not decorative indulgences but surprising acts of integrity.
Moving with the life force that Matisse sought in his work, Blue Arabesque is a dazzling tour de force.

I can't believe they found a publisher for this off the wall, all over the park supposed book.
I can't believe I bought it. I think it's supposed to be book.

1 out of 5 stars "Self-indulgent mishmash".......2007-03-13

Blue Arabesque is a very bad book on multiple counts. A partial list:

Cover art: Matisse's Woman Before an Aquarium (Femmes et poissons rouges) is the painting that prompts this "meditation," but the cover art is by another artist. Although the central focus of this book is Matisse, the book cover features the rear end of the model from the famous painting, Le Grande Odalisque, by Ingres.

Harmony: The book lacks cohesion. Disparate elements are forced into becoming neighbors with one another for no apparent reason.

Rigor: The author's assertions are put forth without evidence.

References: Nonexistent or skimpy in the extreme.

Value: 208 pages fairly large type on approx. 4 x 5 inch layout. (Perhaps I should list this as a "positive.")

It is a mystery to me why these meanderings were published in book format. They resemble the pages of a notebook or journal that have been ever-so-slightly modified and then put forth as some sort of unveiling. But it's all just too fuzzy to get any clear views.

Here is one example from page 161 - Hampl is writing about Katherine Mansfield: "But unlike Virginia Woolf or Sylvia Plath (the afflicted women writers my friends favored), Mansfield's tubercular lungs were bursting to live, live. My saint might die, but extinguish herself? Never." To which one can respond: Who can say? What if Mansfield's affliction had been clinical depression instead of tuberculosis?

From page 77, writing about Matisse: "His dream of beauty was in solidarity not with the idle rich but with the exhausted working poor. Only one who had seen the unforgiving circumstances of industrial labor could understand that the odalisque does not loll on her divan as an erotic opportunity but is even more deeply sensual, an image of pure leisure, that commodity most cruelly denied the poor of the earth." What is the evidence for these conclusions, and why does the author make them?

At another point the author and a friend have had a massage at a Turkish bath:

"...my body broken of its vertical, the arabesque of ease pounded into me." (pg. 147)
"Susan is a lolling rose nearby, a girlfriend talking .... The petals of her body open, blushing with color." (pg. 148)

What point is being made here? At least with respect to the art of Matisse, Ingres, and Delacroix, and the others who are inserted into the text, what has this massage to tell us?

After criticizing this "search for the sublime" so harshly, I feel I should offer an alternative that provides what Blue Arabesque lacks. One excellent choice would be Marjorie Perloff's The Vienna Paradox. If you're seeking a memoir and a meditation with first class writing, try this. Perloff is also a Professor (Emerita) of English and Comparative Literature. The difference is night and day.

Another suggestion would be to read some of the works of either Jorie Graham or Susan Sontag. They, like Hampl, were also MacArthur Fellowship winners from 1990.

4 out of 5 stars Vivid imagery .......2007-02-20

Blue Arabesque by the inspired Patricia Hampl is as much a work of art as the paintings she describes. Her story begins in the spring of 1972 at the Chicago Art Institute. There she is held spellbound by a profound piece of artwork created by Henri Matisse. She describes her enchantment of his painting of a woman gazing into a fishbowl. The author's remembrance of this finding is much more detailed. Her imagery is that of a poet describing a chance encounter with an object whose beauty has to be seen full and in the flesh. She uses vivid mastery of words to keep the readers haunting interest.

Patricia introduces us to Henri Matisse and delights over his use of Moroccan and African influences in his artistry. She explores his use of young women who modeled for him and gives an interesting eye into the life of Henriette Darricarrere who posed from 1920 to 1927. The author also describes the limited though profound life of Jerome Hill whose documentary "Film Portrait" won the 1972 London Film Festival award shortly after his death from cancer in 1971.

In order to truly understand and appreciate the talents of this author, you must read the book. Her journeys are portraits in themselves. She tells of her travels, not like an author or a writer, but like a griot* whose stories are often woven with greatness and sheer excitement. I enjoyed my voyage with Patricia Hampl in her search for the sublime. I have only touched on a fraction of the stories this book encompasses. I urge all to allow this author to share her colorful and delightful experiences with you--a trip well taken.

(* gri*ot -- a member of a caste of professional oral historians in the Mali Empire)

Armchair Interviews says: Truly a "trip well taken."

5 out of 5 stars Subtle and Beautiful.......2007-01-13

This slim volume was packed with imagery and reflections worth a reread. The author has a real gift in drawing from many sources - art, travel, family and spirituality - and creating a rich narrative. It compelled me to read another of her books.

4 out of 5 stars Having a Matisse moment........2006-12-22

Patricia Hampl is the author of three previous memoirs, A Romantic Education, Virgin Time: In Search of the Contemplative Life,I Could Tell You Stories: Sojourns in the Land of Memory. Her latest autobiographical narrative, BLUE ARABESQUE, describes her 1972 encounter with Henri Matisse's "Femme et poissons rouges" ("Woman Before an Aquarium") on her way to a lunch date in the Chicago Art Institute. The painting, which depicts an aloof woman gazing at goldfish, stopped Hampl in her tracks with its representation of the life she desired: a contemplative life in communion with artistic genius. (The scene is reminiscent of Susanna Kaysen's encounter with a Vermeer painting in GIRL, INTERRUPTED.) From this Proustian moment, Hampl's personal essay then sets forth on an ambitious interdisciplinary journey from Matisse's odalisques to the works of Delacroix, Ingres, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jerome Hill, and Katherine Mansfield, then into the world of the Cote d'Azur and North Africa, to the cloister and to the 18th century harems, revealing along the way that Hampl is an academic (a Professor at the University of Minnesota, to be exact) with an inquisitive intellect. Her Matisse moment opens the door to the sublime. Described by The New York Times Book Review as "a paean to the act of seeing, celebrating our capacity to be transformed by the truths art holds," BLUE ARABESQUE offers a fascinating glimpse into a mind attempting to integrate the aesthetic, spiritual, and cultural into one's own life.

4 out of 5 stars What a storm.......2007-06-13

I give this book 4.5 stars. Great continuation of the Deveraux series. Tall, handsome, black men who appreciate woman in all shapes, colours and sizes. I loved the story of Julian Snr and Ruth more than Julian Jnr and Maya, maybe because it was tagged on at the end, they deserved their own book to flesh the story out or because father finds secret baby has been done to death in this genre? I found Maya to be a bit of wimp to be honest. This book needs to be read right after The closer I get to you which is Paris and Titus story for some of the events tie in.
Looking forward to reading about Wade and the twins Lucien and Phillipe.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it--2 for the price of one.......2007-05-05

Two Deveraux's are spotlighted in this book, Julian, Sr. with the blossoming of middle age romance and Julian, Jr. with the story of first love. Each story was well written with tenderness and passion. This book was great reading. I loved the two different story lines going on. I also liked the follow-up on the Parris story line. I love the Deveraux clan which I have followed from the beginning. I love the way this author writes her characters, the women are not all model thin and the men are strong, passionate men who love their women. It was nice to see middle age love blossom also.

4 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - Never too late..........2007-05-02

I try desperately not to judge a book by its cover; front or back. And with BEFORE THE STORM that was a good thing. The story was far more involved than what was expressed on the back cover.

Readers are re-united with the powerful Deveraux clan of New Orleans. This story centers on Julian Deveraux, senior and junior. Fifty-seven-year-old Julian, Sr. has been widowed almost twenty years; he has successfully raised his children and is content with his memories. Thirty-three-year-old Julian, Jr. has been divorced for almost five years, and has sworn off love and marriage. He has not talked to his ex-wife since she left. Paris Deveraux has other ideas for both of them, and has dusted off her bow and arrow. Paris' friend Ruth is age-appropriate and perfect for her father. And while planning for her own wedding, Paris crosses paths with her brother's ex-wife, and stumbles on a secret. She seizes the opportunity to become a savior of sorts for each of them. Can she really pull it off?

BEFORE THE STORM is two stories in one, about two sensitive men who need to overcome past losses. A reference to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina adds realness to the story. What I love most about Ms. Schuster's writing is that the adults are truly adult, and the stories are passionate and real; they make you believe in overcoming all odds. There are several more Deveraux stories and I eagerly await their arrivals.

5 out of 5 stars Two books in one!.......2007-04-03

I really enjoyed this book, despite the false advertising on the back cover. This is really Mac and Ruth's story. Julian & Maya are kind of added on as an afterthought. I know I gave the story 5 stars but Mac & Ruth have such a beautiful love story. It's not often you see such a sensual love story between 50-somethings. They were hotter than the youngsters. I feel Julian & Maya should have had their own book or at least their part expanded. It was wrapped up rather quickly, though a bit comedically. I still really liked it though. The old folks were a lot of fun. And the reactions of the kids to them was hilarious. The scene with the cat and the strapless bra was great! Despite the wrong info on the back cover, I would definitely recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Two For the Price of One.......2007-03-20

I have to agree the back of the book was a little deceptive. But it was still a good read and you got two romances for the price of one. And boy do those Deveraux men know how romance and sex a woman up. I enjoy reading about all of them and their loves.

Book Description

Strikingly exotic Jaunie Sterling was the perfect decoy for suspicious wives out to test their husbands' fidelity. That's what Intimate Investigations paid her to do, and her success was impressive. No man had ever failed to fall into her seductive trap--before Trent Douglas, that is. Not that he didn't want her. On the contrary, her smooth cinnamon skin and deep tawny eyes rattled every inch of him. But he was a faithfully engaged man and declined Jaunie's enticing advances.

Years later, Jaunie still thought about Trent Douglas. Although she'd only been doing her job, she'd never forgotten the icy stare he gave her when he realized he'd been set up. Now Jaunie is part owner in her own P.I. firm, and their paths are about to cross again--this time in a case that involves Trent. Suddenly, there's no dodging each other, or the irrepressible desire they've been trying to deny. 4 out of 5 stars When we practice to deceive...........2005-04-20

Jaunie Sterling, going by her alias Dominique, was every man's dream. A woman that would make even the purest of the saints, fall to his knees. Due to her undeniable beauty, mistrustful women paid her to go undercover to test the faithfulness of their husbands and fiancés. Jaunie's advances always worked, that is until the day the devastatingly handsome Trenton Douglas turned her down. Once Trent found out his encounter with her was planned, nothing in Jaunie's life could compare to the tongue lashing she received from him. After what could be described as the ultimate humiliation, Jaunie decides to seek another form of employment. However, thoughts of Trent never strayed far from her mind.

After the horrifying ordeal, Trent packed his bags and left town. Now five years later, he returns to start a new life as partner in a contracting firm with his best friend. When his partner suggests he introduce himself to the occupants of the office across the hall, Trent is at a loss for words when he comes face to face with Dominique. Jaunie has a hard time convincing Trent that she has a reputable job and is no longer posing as Dominique. But what Trent has failed to divulge is his attraction to her since their first encounter, as the reason for his disbelief. When Jaunie's life is threatened, will Trent finally throw caution to the wind and learn to forgive and forget?

PRIVATE LIES is an awe-inspiring tale of two people destined to find happiness. Once again Robyn Amos has entertained readers with another excellent tale of romance and suspense. This novel was such a fast-paced enjoyable read that I did not want to see it end.

Trent has a problem! That problem can not be solved when the cause and cure is a lady by the name of Jaunie. Trent tries but could not come up with a drug to prevent him form falling in love with Jaunie. How can he when Jaunie is the only cure for what ale's him!! This was a great story. Once again Amos gives a story that her fans and readers can just fall in love with. I could not put this one down. Much love Amos!!

5 out of 5 stars Hot!!.......1998-06-08

This novel was all of that and then some. I really enjoyed the novel. The plot and story line were very creative and interesting. I was elated when Jaunie and Trent finally got together. Finally, Robert found someone that he could have for keeps. Four failed marriages!! That's not really good. Keep up the good work Robyn!! Looking forward to your next novel.

5 out of 5 stars A definite Keeper!! Money well spent and then some........1998-04-04

This story is very real and well written. The chemistry between Jaunie and Trenton is hot. And we also have several little mysteries along the way to keep one aptly entertained. She also tackles some serious topics like child runaways but in away that fits with the plot of the story. A definite must read.

5 out of 5 stars Protective Possessive Provider.......2007-10-10

Rochelle Allers creates the perfect alpha male characters. What woman wouldn't want a man who is protective, with a little possessiveness (in a sexy way)and is willing to give you anything your heart desires. Michael is mysteriously sexy and owns up to what belongs to him. Oh yeah, he is a great cook too! The love scenes were steamy and the story line was great with the suspence. This book was a great page turner.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-07-09

Although this series has been out awhile, I am just now finding the time to read. I really enjoyed this book. All of the men of Cole-Diz, etc. are magnificent! They are tough and also tender. As with the other stories, this one had lots of romance with just a touch of intrigue. For all the romance lovers, if you haven't read this book or any of the others, I strongly advise that you do!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-11-21

This seventh book in the Hideaway series is a great read and stands on its own. A good mixture of romance and intrigue and covers a real harsh subject domestic, drug and political abuse. Michael Kirkland is a real hero, and really knows how to look out for his lady- every woman should have one. Good to catch up on the other family members.

5 out of 5 stars Risking it all for love..........2006-02-08

Once again, Ms. Alers has taken romance and passion to another level with the second generation of Coles/Sterlings/Kirklands/Lassiters/Delgados.

Michael Kirkland was all military like his father Joshua. Jolene was all business and a force to be reckoned with. Neither was looking for love -- that is until their eyes met across a crowded room. And then it was on!

The intensity and the passion between Michael and Jolene practically burned through the pages and left me sweating, gasping for air and needing a cool drink. I hated for the book to end.

Michael, Salem and Chris are the kind of men dreams are made of. Jolene, Sara and Emily are the women who can love them. Ms. Alers thank you for sharing your gift. Your words truly keep a hopeless and hopeful romantic -- hoping and waiting. Much respect!

5 out of 5 stars Personal.......2005-12-15

Michael and Jolene........made my heart lurch.....oh what passion they had for one another. Another excellent read. I love this series..............All of those Coles/Kirklands/Sterlings leaving me longing for a life that's not in my reach.........so I've learned to live through them. Ms. Alers...........you're the best!

Book Description

In JANICE SIMS's "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man," recently widowed Gena Boudreau has just about given up on motherhood, until a precocious teenager tries to set Gena up with her single father, Nathan Lincoln.

The star of a reality dating show cooked up by creative director Justine Graves turns out to be a hit. The only thing that can stop the show is the reluctant bachelor Markos Raineau and the growing attraction Justine feels for him. "The Real Thing" by KIM LOUISE reveals what can happen when fate and faith run their course.

Will money come between Charlimae Watson and her estranged husband, Sam, in NATALIE DUNBAR's "My Promise To You"? Sometimes divine intervention is the only thing that can save a marriage, and Red Oaks' Mother Maybelle just may have the answer to Sam and Charlimae's prayers.

When Dr. Gabrielle Talbot arrives in Red Oaks, Georgia, the last thing she has on her mind is romance—that is until she meets Marcus Danforth. But will he break her heart like her ex-fiancé, or will he find a way to win her trust in "A Change Is Gonna Come" by NATHASHA BROOKS-HARRIS?

4 out of 5 stars A Revival, A Little Faith and a Lotta Love.......2007-06-26

Romance authors Janice Sims, Kim Louise, Natalie Dunbar and Nathasha Brooks-Harris follow-up their 2005 anthology, Can I Get An Amen, with a sequel aptly titled Can I Get an Amen Again. In this follow-up, while the protagonists are new, the town of Red Oaks, Georgia, the Red Oaks Christian Fellowship Church and Mother Maybelle remain constant.

In veteran author Janice Sims story, "Brown-eyed Handsome Man", widow Gena Boudreau keeps herself busy in community service, afraid to allow herself to become involved again after her husband's untimely death. She has a hard time reconciling her faith and therefore her church attendance is almost nonexistence. Lily Lincoln is a young lady who thinks Gina would be the ideal woman for her father, Nate, and would also serve to keep him out of her teenage business. Gina and Nate finally meet at the tent revival held by Red Oaks Christian Fellowship. Can the rich widow on the hill overcome the idea that she is a jinx and fall in love with the handsome carpenter? In steps Mother Maybelle who wants to see these two together. Energetic characters and a humorous storyline will delight fans of Sims.

Kim Louis created a unique storyline in "The Real Thing", involving a store executive turned reality show star. Markos Raineau wants to increase sales for Value-Mart and reluctantly agrees to go along with marketing director Justine Graves' scheme. A different woman will accompany Markos on each of the seven nights of the revival. Which beautiful woman of the Marrying Markos Show will be the next Mrs. Raineau? Has Justine made a mistake by throwing a hottie like Markos before a group of desperate and gorgeous hoochies? And furthermore, just how far is she willing to go to keep them from Markos? This was a fun, out-of-the-box story of well-developed, flawed characters with a current theme.

In "My Promise To You" by Natalie Dunbar, a young married couple's marriage is sorely tested by economics and family interference. Sam Watson shows up at the revival seeking his wife, Charlimae, after several months of abandonment. His explanation of having to go to another city several hundred miles away to obtain employment is not a good enough explanation for Charlimae. Her father insists she get a divorce but she is willing to give her marriage another try. The couple attempt to work through their financial problems and their marital woes with a little help from the formidable Mother Maybelle. This was a low-key story that emphasized how the principles of faith and prayer are the key to seeking solutions to a troubled marriage.

Dr. Gabrielle Talbot, seeking a change in her life, takes a position as a head physician at Red Oaks Hospital in "A Change is Gonna Come" by Nathasha Brooks- Harris. After she is deceived by her fiancée', Gabrielle decides to forgo relationships and concentrate on practicing medicine. When she treats the assistant pastor of Red Oaks Fellowship, she meets his brother, contractor Marcus Danforth. Marcus is immediately attracted to Gabrielle and she to him but both struggle with painful memories and past mistakes. Count on Mother Maybelle and a revival to put the couple on the right path. Marcus' thirteen year-old nephew, Kevon, was a delightful treat but the story left me with a few questions in regards to the story's stance on forgiveness.

When Can I Get An Amen came out, it was besieged by controversy over what genre it represented. Was it Christian romance fiction or was it contemporary fiction in a church theme/setting? Some readers voiced concern about the sexin' while others thought it was appropriate and in line with the reality of church going folks. Can I Get An Amen Again will undoubtedly draw similar debate-- and that is a good thing, despite the proliferation of church-themed contemporary fiction that includes sexy storylines. Nevertheless, these stories will have you both smiling and saying "Amen."

5 out of 5 stars A Lover's Dream-A Joyfully Recommended Title.......2007-02-08

Well-known author, Michaela `Mick' Sellers, finds herself on a flight to Seattle to meet with members of the Ramsey family because her best friend/publisher secretly sent a biography proposal (under Mick's name) to the Ramsey family. Surprise! Surprise! Twins, Quest and Quaysar Ramsey agree to meet with Michaela to discuss the proposal in further detail. However, upon arrival, Mick encounters resistance from the twins when she is told that some members of their family do not want the book to be written. Although greatly disappointed about the biography deal gone sour, Mick could not resist the alluring charms of Quest Ramsey. So, she agrees to remain in Seattle for awhile in order for them to explore their growing desire.

When Mick uncovers a devastating Ramsey secret, it puts a huge wedge in her newly found relationship with Quest. Now, Mick has to choose between maintaining her professional demeanor by investigating a secret that could possibly destroy the Ramsey family name or following her heart's desire.

A Lover's Dream is a sensational page-turner that has the right mixture of romance and suspense to keep you glued to your seat until the arrival of the cliffhanging conclusion. A Lover's Dream is about love, heartache, misunderstandings and hurtful buried secrets. Quest has done and will continue to do whatever it takes to protect his family name; which is why he refuses a book being published about their family history. However, Quest did not count on falling head over heels in love with a woman who could demolish everything. From their very first kiss, the passion quickly heats up between them and when they finally do come together in an intimate manner it is intensely sensual and vastly explosive! The progression of the storyline is highly intriguing and will keep you hanging on until the very end of A Lover's Dream. In fact it will have you begging for more. With a great plot and well-written, passionate characters, AlTonya Washington has crafted a wonderful masterpiece that I am proud to bestow as a Joyfully Reviewed Recommended Read. I can't wait until the next exciting, thrilling installment!

4 out of 5 stars Silent Giants.......2006-11-24

Twins, Quest and Quaysar Ramsey head the Ramsey Group in Seattle Washington and are known among their female employees as "the gods". Quest, 3 minutes older than his brother is considered the stick in the mud and protector of the family secrets. Michaela "Mick" Sellars is sent to do a book on the family; however, once Quest sets his sights on Mick, the book is almost forgotten until Mick is asked to investigate a murder that might involve Quest and end their growing relationship.

Quest and Mick's story was an enjoyable read and although I am looking forward to reading Quay's story and hoping to find out what happened to Sera Black, I also hope that Ms Washington will keep up the good work and keep them coming.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book.......2006-07-25

This was the first book I read by Altonya Washington. I could not put it down. I loved reading about Quest and Michaela. I can't wait to read the sequel about Quest's twin Quaysar.

4 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2006-07-23

Altonya is definitely an author on the rise. The dynamics between Quest and Mick was very strong and clearly described. I know we were left hanging for a reason so I can't wait until the Quaysar's story.

5 out of 5 stars Love Times Love.......2006-07-04

Writer Michaela Sellers is beautiful, successful and single and loving it. Life could not be better until she takes a trip to Seattle to do a biography on twins Quest and Quasar, Seattle's most eligible bachelors. From day one the outgoing twin, Quaysar, sets his sights on Michaela. Unexpectedly, the strong silent Quest is charmed by Michaela as well. Although Michaela has no desire to mix business with pleasure, one of the twins draws her to him like a tide to the sea shore. Combine a family secret and Michaela's reluctance to become involved, the road to love becomes a difficult one to travel.

I found this book to be an excellent read. The characters were lovable, fun and believable and the plot unfolded at a nice pace. The author's ability to insert just the right amount of tension and conflict into the story is commendable. If you are a lover of romance, grab a cool drink, a quiet spot and embark on A Lover's Dream.
