Customer Reviews:
lovei it.......2007-05-12
I know that people have been complaining about how some of the stencils are too small and become unclear when blown up. They have a few other issues, too.
Here's the thing: the book has over 2,000 great stencils that are perfectly legible. I'm an illustrator, woodworker, and paper crafter. I am simply delighted at the various choices of stencil. Plus, the book is very inspiring in terms of providing a jumping off point to make up my own. I simply love it.
excellent.......2007-03-10
This is a wonderful resource for design ideas! I use elements of these stencils as patterns for guitar inlays. The copyright info on the inside cover is generous allowing use of the patterns, "free and without special permission." in certain circumstances.
Historical and not useful.......2006-07-03
If you are a craftperson, do not buy this book, though pictoral, it is more historical and you need a magnifying glass to see some of the stencils.
Great Resource for Designers .......2006-06-03
This book is chock full of great Victorian design. It has cartouches (ornamental borders), patterns, single filligree elements, and the best part is that they are all royalty free. You will need to scan the elements and clean them up a bit, but this book is a fantastic resource for the "flourish" trend that is going on in graphic design right now.
Highly recommended.
Useful for engraving.......2005-05-07
I use these stencils as layouts for gun engraving. While many designs are too small and lack enough detail to be able to reproduce (about 30%) most are of good quality and detail. It's a great value for the price and I strongly recommend it as an indispensible aid for all engravers, wood carvers, and stencil makers.

Country Arts in Early American Homes
ASIN: 1584651946 |
Book Description
For today's owner of an antique house, the discovery of an early stenciled wall--even a fragment of one--is a revelation that offers a shard of a tangible past. In post-revolutionary America, the decoration of choice for a surprisingly large number of home owners from all social and economic groups was walls painted with intricate stenciled designs. Stenciled walls were cheaper and more sanitary than those covered with paper, but the most compelling reason for the widespread use of stenciling was that it was considered far more stylish than impersonal, mass-produced paper. Stencil artists freely borrowed wallpaper motifs and crossbred them. Successive generations of wallpaper, which became increasingly more affordable after the Industrial Revolution, covered stenciled walls, hiding them, obliterating some and preserving others.
Ann Eckert Brown's extensive research has unearthed stencils not just in New England's more characteristic homes, taverns, and inns, but also in the south and midwest. She divides stenciling into rural-based folk art, which uses naturalistic, and sometimes primitive motifs, and classically inspired, urban-based stencils, which feature patterns more refined in scale and earlier in execution, echoing Federal style images.
Over 250 illustrations complement Brown's text as she makes fresh stylistic connections among designs, artists, regions, and houses over two centuries, discovering and illuminating some missing links in the history of wall stenciling. Even more, she ties together the shared destinies of the families, descendants, artists, rescuers, and restorers who lived with, created, or have dedicated their lives to preserving, this beautiful art form. She also provides a glossary, a discussion of early paint materials, suggested resources for wall stenciling preservation, and a Who's Who of American wall stenciling which includes 18th, 19th, and 20th century artists and preservationists. The result, as Mimi Handler writes in her foreword, "is a book that fairly hums with life and purpose."
Customer Reviews:
I truly loved this book.......2003-05-17
Last weekend I attended a party in RI and I found myself emersed in this book for much of the time. I came home and ordered it right away. It is a beautiful image of post revolutionary America and this important art form. As someone who grew up in New England I loved this glimpse into the past. Ms. Eckert Brown's extensive research is evident, and the illustrations are wonderful. This is the quintessential book for anyone who loves stenciling, art and American history.

Whether you're thinking about stenciling something simple such as a floral motif around a doorway or have set your sights on turning your bedroom into a medieval castle, this guide will help. Stenciling, we learn, comes from an old French word meaning to sparkle, and the lively projects certainly do. Beyond good coverage of all the necessary basics (equipment, fixing mistakes, cutting your own stencils) and the usual candidates for rampaging stencil artists (walls, fabrics, home decorating accessories), the book offers information on advanced techniques (like airbrushing and trompe l'oeil) and adapting the process to unusual surfaces (ceramic tiles, ceilings, exterior walls). And if you've ever dreamed of becoming a professional stenciler, the no-nonsense advice on setting prices, finding clients, and other tricks of the trade will prove invaluable.
Customer Reviews:
Very dated.......2006-08-05
I found this to be very dated in techniques and style. I knew it was ten years old, but I didn't realize the vast changes in stenciling. I didn't find the instruction to be particularly detailed, and learned far more from the many other books available.
best stenciling book i've found.......1998-02-11
I bought stenciling techniques because it has some of the best information i've found on stenciling. It has a variety of techniques and a good list of resources. The book is easy to understand and has information i've been looking for
good base book for beginners or advanced stencilers.......1998-02-05
This book nicely covers the basics such as materials and techniques, with good full color photos to further illustrate what is explained. For the advanced painter, there are some good ideas, again with full color pictures. I've even brought this book with me to a client to show them some samples of what can be done.

How to Start a Faux Painting or Mural Business: A Guide to Making Money in the Decorative Arts
ASIN: 1552091430 |
Book Description
To make a big impression, says stencilling expert Sandra Buckingham, you don't have to re-create the Sistine Chapel. Start small, she counsels, and the rest will follow.
Buckingham's latest book
Stencilling on a Grand Scale leads do-it-yourselfers beyond the realm of decorative borders featured in her best-selling "Stencilling: A Harrowsmith Guide" to a creative canvas whose limits are determined only by space, time and imagination. The key to her strategy is that a large stencilled work -- be it a door, wall, screen or floor -- can be the seamless sum of its parts. In other words, rather than using an expensive, unwieldy, multi-layered stencil to create a life-sized tree, use three 10 inch stencils of leaf clusters, laying and re-laying them to achieve the desired effect. The only limit to the ultimate size of the finished painting is the room you've set aside for it.
Whether you are fashioning a greeting card or a 40-foot mural, Buckingham recommends the same modest techniques. The methods used to faux-finish a wall -- a vine rambling up a corner, windows stencilled onto an actual door, a false shelf with flowerpots stencilled in an alcove -- can likewise be applied to furniture or folding screens and can be used on any scale.
A technical review of traditional and new stencilling tools is followed by a refresher course in basic stencilling methods, including stencil cutting, hard-surface stencilling, stencilling on primed canvas, overlays, registration and special effects, among them shading, shadows, plant detail and painting skies and landscapes. A chapter on freeform stencilling, with and without masks, prepares readers for the larger-scale works that are the book's central objective.
Buckingham advises perfecting your free-form skills on less ambitious projects (lampshades, borders, placemats) before moving to grander subjects. By the later chapters, stencillers will be comfortable tackling everything from picket and wrought iron fences, lattice work, garden gates, French doors, veranda doors and curtains to paving stones, terra-cotta tiles, carpets, mosaic floors, stone columns, balustrades, terraces, garden walls and room dividers. As always, Buckingham's genius lies in inspiration, and
Stencilling on a Grand Scale introduces a how-to-world that has no boundaries.

Stencilling on a Grand Scale.......2007-01-04
I have enjoyed thinking about doing some of this. The book gives fine guidance
Good Technique and Steps IF you like Folk Art type decor.......2005-12-02
The projects in this book were well-detailed and gave some good information on composition and layering of stencils. I checked this book out of the library and don't intend on buying it BUT I do recommend it if you like the more folkart type decor. I was looking for something more realistic in floral decor. The trellice project was very cute and would look great with a cottage country look.
The Best For Beginners.......2002-09-20
I came across this book in my local library and loved it so much I bought a copy for myself. Ms. Buckingham manages to create beautiful trompe l'oeil work with simple techniques that are easy for even the absolute beginner. An added bonus is that her stencils are available online...
Great for beginners and Experts.......2001-10-28
I purchased this book 2 years ago. At the time I did not know they sold stencils until I purchased a few stencils on their website along with their video. The book is easy to follow and they give you many ways to incooporate simple stencils. This book encouraged me to create a mural from a small picture and brought out a talent that I never knew existed. Well done. Fantastic pictures with great color which I feel either makes or breaks a simple stencil or a 5 layered stencil. I would highly recommend their book, stencils and their video. If I can learn, anyone can!!!! A+++++
Hard Cover Quality In a Paperback.......2000-09-22
Grab this book without hesitation!
I saw the author on the show, "Home Matters" and was instantly motivated to buy this book. When I saw that it was available in both hard- and soft- cover verrsions, my decision was difficult. Usually saving a few bucks on the paperback version of any book means sacrificing quality; thin paper, fewer illustrations, shortened versions. etc.
When I opted to buy this in the paperback form, I was expecting the usual compromises. I was, joyfully, wrong! This book not only boasts the easy instructions and wonderful pictorials of the hardcover version, it also has wonderful, high quality paper stock rarely found even in hardcover these days. The quality of this book will stand up to years of planning and crafting!

Customer Reviews:
Best of Verneuil.......2007-02-28
This book exceeded my hopes. It had many more images in full color than I expected for such a cheap book. I have seen other books by Verneuil and they were half as nice and mostly black and white. I think anyone into decorating, drawing, and painting will like this book. It will inspire you to create art nouveau lines and flowers on your own work.
Good designs.......2006-11-05
If you are into art nouveau, you will enjoy this Dover book. Again many variations on floral themes.
Beautiful artwork, beautiful reproductions.......2006-06-07
I thought the artwork in this book was stunning, and the reproduction quality and colors were lovely. I did have one major problem with the book, two of the main designs on the cover (topmost horizontal design and the center horizontal design) are NOT IN THE BOOK! These are two of the main patterns I planned to use from the book, and now if I want to, I need to get them from the cover, where they are covered by text. I found this to be unacceptable! Please keep this fact in mind if the cover is what won you over.
Fine Art professional point of view .......2006-03-21
This book helps me in my work big time. I'm free freelance artist and right now I'm working on my next big project in Art Nouveau style and I can not imagine my work without this book.
Sit down before you open this one.......2006-01-14
Dover Publications is the friend of anyone with nearly any sort of interest (and not much money). If you're interested in the ways and means of New Art, get this one.
M. Verneuil clearly would have liked the Dover editors. LIke them, he had his wide-ranging interests, in his case in botany, Japanese design, and decorative arts (to judge by his booklist).
This book is a feast that shifts back and forth from stylization and abstraction on one hand to close observation of natural plant forms on the other. One two-page spread (plates 62 & 63) in particular juxtaposes both this reduction into pattern and the accuracy of his eye.
These are the crown imperial and the German iris from Verneuil's Etude de la plante. Side views of each plant give you the random visual complexity of the original -- almost scruffy leaves, in the crown imperial's case. Both set forth the visually overwhelming detail of the blossoms. But, at the bottom of both plates are plan views of a blossom, simple, regular and compelling as a Japanese mon.
If the rest of Verneuil's plant book is this good, I'm hoping Dover reprints the whole thing one day.
When Verneuil moves to greater depths (or is it heights?) of abstraction, the results are often stunning. Don't miss plate 27, an overall pattern of maidenhair fern in shades of orange, or plate 28, a tiled pattern of wild iris in rippling water.
It's interesting to compare the sunflowers in plate 79, apparently a detail from a running line of tiles, with the one in plate 59 from Etude de la plante. The latter captures the petals in wild abandon, the leaves in their rough, almost papery reality. The former flattens and regularizes each leaf, and views the flowers head-on, giving us a literal sunburst of shape and color in complex but regular pattern.
Throughout, M. Verneuil brings a solid color sense, now playing with shades of neighboring hues, now with contrasting hues. Each one seems absolutely right.
You can't open this book to any page without feeling that the mind and eye that originated it were pretty special. It's more than likely that some of this impression is due to the care of Carol Belanger Grafton, who selected and arranged the plates -- many of the two-page spreads seem to delight in comparing, or mirroring, or contrasting Verneuil's designs.
If you like art nouveau, you'll want this book.

Something to Aspire to.......2002-09-20
This book (as well as the author's website and training classes) are for the more advanced artist or professional painter. Her work is absolutely beautiful, and achievable if you have some artistic talent. Consider this book after you've had some experience with stencils and general painting techniques. For beginners, try "Stenciling on a Grand Scale" by Linda Buckingham if you are looking for a less complex entry into the world of trompe l'oeil using stencils.
However -- if you're ready for a challenge, this is an outstanding volume!!
Absolutely essential to helping me with my project!.......2002-03-05
I have a lot of creative energy and when I decided to try theorem stencilling, I bought several different books. However, this one book is the one that I constantly refer to to help me with my projects. It is clear and easy to follow with good instructions and pictures. If you are just starting out, this is the first book to buy. I also recommend her videos, which are the best on the market.
Interesting but not indepth........2001-12-06
If you want to paint what she suggest it is fine. But if you want to create your own paintings then you need a different book.
Great Book.......2001-11-14
This is a great book and give's easy to follow instructions. However, even though the instructions are given quiet well you better have some real talent to paint the way they tell you in the book. Beautiful color and idea's in this book. I am glad I purchased it a good value for the money.
Trompe L'Oeil beginner.......2001-10-26
Great book for beginners or those with some experience in dabbling with stencils like myself. The ABSOLUTE BEST is the great list of web sites in the Resource section of the book. I have found GREAT information on these sites as well as some SUPER stencil stores. This is a must for those fellow stencilers who want to graduate to more creative and challenging works but feel they don't have the creative talent or "juices" like ME!!

Each page explodes with color, creativity, information on the basics, and exquisite projects. These techniques are so simple, easy to master, and appealingly illustrated that even the most timid home decorator will feel a surge of confidence as soon as she completes her very first stencil.
Customer Reviews:
WOW! I wish I could give 10 stars!.......2004-04-27
Jan Dressler is absolutely amazing! She explains everything you need to know in easy to understand language without making you feel like you are in preschool. Her pictures are colorful and whimsical. I have done a little stenciling and it was okay. My very first project after reading this book was a very complicated and detailed stencil (trompe l'oeil) across an entire wall. I could not believe how fabulous it looked! Family and friends are just about speechless when they see my wall. Jan has her own line of stencils which are fabulous but she also gives information on other stencil companies in the book. She tells you what to look for when buying stencils. If you don't get a good stencil, your results will be awful. I can not recommend this book enough. If you only buy one book in your life about decorating your walls, BUY THIS ONE!
