Yohji Yamamoto (Memoirs)
ASIN: 3882438258
Release Date: 2002-11-02 |
Book Description
French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre once defined Yohji Yamamoto's style like this: "For me, a woman in Yohji is like a nymphomaniac nun. His clothes are at once sensual and very ritualistic." This about a man whose reputation marks him as a designer of clothes for earnest intellectuals. This about a man whose 1998 "wedding" show featured a bridal striptease which took models from inflated Victorian crinolines down to slim-line dresses and pants. This about a man who is one of the most revered and idiosyncratic of 20th century designers. In Talking to Myself, Yamamoto has created an illustrated notebook that recounts the phases of his life. A work in progress punctuated with multiple images, Talking to Myself is the only book in which Yamamoto has become personally involved, making it a veritable extension of his own private world. In it, he "talks to himself" and with philosopher and art/fashion critic Kiyokazu Washida about himself and the objects he creates, objects that meld, blend with, and are assimilated by the person they seek to enhance. Pages marked by Yamamoto's pen and brush with Japanese ideograms, striking sketches, and abstract compositions help decipher his desire to achieve anti-fashion through fashion itself. Yamamoto's world is one of black and white symbols, a world in which color makes only a fleeting appearance.

Book Description
Colorful and cosmic, Peter Max's art has been an integral part of contemporary American culture for more than three decades. Beginning in the 1960s, when his bold, bright paintings embodied the spirit of the times, up to the present day, his prolific output has inspired people in every corner of the world. Premier art institutions regularly exhibit solo shows of his work, and his trademark posters have achieved international popularity. From being named Official Artist of the Grammy Awards for five successive years to painting a Continental Airlines 777 plane, Max's projects always garner enormous media attention.
In this comprehensive Max retrospective, 350 full-color images-many never before published-illustrate the artist's life and prolific career. Author Charles A. Riley II considers Max's uncanny ability to create fine art with tremendous popular appeal.
Customer Reviews:
Not enough of the psychedelic works.......2007-09-29
After viewing the Peter Max exhibit at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, I was anxious to see this book, but it was very disappointing. The book mostly contains later paintings which bear no resemblance to the psychedelic posters shown at the De Young. I think it may be time for a new book that just focuses on the works that appears to be somewhat similar to the Yellow Submarine.
Excellent overview.......2007-03-16
This book is GREAT - it gives you a complete understanding of his art past and present.
10 Star Rating.......2007-01-15
I first saw this book on a cruise and knew I had to have it. Its an excellent book for the art enthusiast and a beautiful book for display. I highly recommend to anyone.
Love the Peter Max book.......2007-01-09
I became fascinated with Peter Max after seeing his unique work while I was on a cruise ship this fall. This book is full of images of Peter Max's colorful works of art and it discusses his life story as well. It costs an additional $20 at stores. I decided to wait it out, and order it online. It was worth it.
Quality assured.......2006-08-10
This edition I had was printed in Japan, notwithstanding the quality of the prints, pages and the cover were stunning!
Unfortunately I was hoping for more of Peter Max's psychedelic artwork & merchandise which he was most remembered for, as the book featured most his more recent paintings and his penchant for the Statue of Liberty & American icons. In fact I bought the book as a reference for 60s color scheme & rock posters but retro artwork added up to abt 30 odd pages out of the 240...
I'm thinking contemporary fine-art artists/lovers might take to this book with more enthusiasm than illustrators or graphic designers, despite this, the book still manages to inspire me with Max's whimsical use of paint colors and his contribution to society.

Book Description
The fifth edition of Plant Design and Economics for Chemical Engineers is a major revision of the popular fourth edition. There are new chapters on process synthesis, computer-aided design, and design of chemical reactors. A traditionally strong feature of the text, economic analysis, has been revamped and updated. Another strength, equipment sizing and cost estimation, is updated and expanded as well. These improvements also reflect changes in equipment availability.
The numerous real examples throughout the book include computer or hand solutions, and often both. There is a new increased emphasis on computer use in design, economic evaluation, and optimization. Concepts, strategies, and approaches to computer use are featured. These concepts are not tied to particular software programs and therefore apply to wide a range of applications software, of both current and future release.
This widely used text is now more useful than ever, providing a “one-stop” guide to chemical process design and evaluation.

Good for engineers starting the career.......2002-01-03
The book is a mix of economical and technical aspects of chemical engineering design; so is good for graduates starting the career or for practicing engineer interested in economical aspects of plant design. For me the good companion book for these engineer is "Conceptual design of chemical processes" by J. Douglas or better but out-of-print "Applied Project Engineering and Management" by E. Ludwig.

Book Description
Max Beckmann was among the greatest painters of the 20th century, yet no retrospective of his work has been mounted in the art capitals of New York, London, and Paris in over 30 years. Perhaps the lapse of attention has to do with the importance of abstraction in 20th-century art, and Beckmann's work is always figurative, simultaneously muscular and enigmatic and has enormous and unsettling power. Beckmann began his career as a naturalist and Symbolist in the period before World War I. After the war he developed a unique pictorial style that mixed expressionist color and gesture, mythological and mystical allegory, and the harsh new objectivity of his portrayal of modern life throughout the Nazi reign of terror. A prolific artist in painting, drawing, and printmaking--as well as a powerful sculptor--Beckmann created mysterious images and dense tableaux of unparalleled intensity and complexity during an odyssey that took him from his native Germany to Paris, Amsterdam, St. Louis, and New York. A new examination of Beckmann's role and reputation during the first half of the 20th century has been eagerly awaited. Making use of new scholarship and previously unavailable research materials, this book sheds light on Beckmann's work and his influence on and interactions with the artists of his day. Essays include discussions of Beckmann's Frankfurt cityscapes, his pictures from Italy, his triptychs, his group portraits, and his relationship with cultural politics in the 1920s and 1930s; texts and interviews by artists Leon Golub and Ellsworth Kelly; curator Robert Storr on "The Beckmann Effect"; and artist William Kentridge on Beckmann's Death. This sumptuous volume is published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition mounted jointly by the Tate Modern, Centre Georges Pompidou, and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. It is the first comprehensive exhibition of Beckmann's work to be seen in the United States since 1984, and the first in New York since 1964.
Customer Reviews:
comprehensive but...........2007-08-26
intelligent text and many illustrations, sadly however, none are in color. Beckmann deserves more.
The definite Beckmann monography.......2007-04-26
This book is the catalogue for the largest Beckmann exhibition ever held, in 2003,at the Centre Pompidou, the Tate Gallery and the Moma. All the masterpieces of this great artist are illustrated and explained, following a clear chronology and putting them in the historical and social context in which they were created. High-quality texts (especially the analysis of Beckmann's influence on contemporary artists like P.Guston)make this an indispensable work. Highly recommended.

History of the Surrealist Movement
ASIN: 377571524X
Release Date: 2005-03-15 |
Book Description
While Surrealism became unfashionable in Europe in the 1930s, it enjoyed increasing popularity across the Atlantic at the same time. Surrealism USa, the catalogue to the exhibition at the National Academy of Design, Surrealism USA, traces the history of this movement in the United States from the 1930s to the 1950s by examining its manifestations throughout the country--from Social Surrealism and California Post-Surrealism to Magic Realism and the beginning of Abstract Expressionism. It chronicles the wide influence of Dal' on American art, the Surrealists' response to war and fascism, and the relationship between Surrealism and abstract art. With over 100 paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings, this definitive survey brings together the work of American artists like Joseph Cornell, Peter Blume, Kay Sage, Isamu Noguchi, Arshile Gorky, and Jackson Pollock--with that of Europeans in exile during World War II, including Salvador Dal', Yves Tanguy, Andra Masson, and Max Ernst.
Customer Reviews:
Museum Quality.......2005-09-05
I was fortunate enough to see the Surrealism USA exhibit on tour in Phoenix in July. The collection was astounding. I found this book in the Phoenix Art Museum Store, however, $50 seemed like a lot to spend on a book while on a weekend vacation. I was thrilled to find it on Amazon for much less. The book is beautiful, the photographs are museum print quality and oversized, mostly one or two on each page. The book contains a thorough history of the surrealism movement in the United States during the last century. I would not hesitate to purchase it again.

Customer Reviews:
Eye opener.......2007-09-05
This book gives you a wide variety of artists, styles & insight. There is information about each person & what they did to created their piece. Artworks range from crazy to beautiful to uncomfortable. Some of these things are amazing. It doesn't document every tiny detail of how it was done, but much of the information is there.
You can spend hours exploring & learning from this one.
Good Book!.......2007-02-01
This book gave me exactly what I needed, ideas for art and the methods used to create truly artistic pictures. While I am learning the basics of Paint Shop Pro XI, how to put color on paper, so to speak, doesn't help a lot with the creative process without much time consuming experimentation. This book helps shortcut the process for me.
Digital Arts.......2006-11-16
This book shows you the tools different graphic artists used to complete specific works they have done. It shows you key elements they used, but it does not say how they created their entire piece. It is kind of basic stuff, but it is a good reference book to learn or review some techniques. The programs most often discussed are photoshop and painter. This is a good book for graphic design students.
a book of artists' works, not a technique book.......2005-11-03
This book offers little in the way of actual things to do for your own digital painting or artwork, it is just a review of different digitial artists and some of their work. It is similar to the books such as "Works of 100 colored pencil artists", which is a showcase of colored pencil artists with a short bio and examles of their works, but very little in the way of actual techniques for your own work. This is similar to that, and, while there are some explanations given on some of the techniques used along with a short bio on each artist, it is mainly just a showcase of digital artists and their work. If you like a book for a coffee table and just enjoy looking at artwork, this is the book. However, if you want a more extensive book on actual work for digital work, you need to buy the technical books on the interrelationship between art and computer expertise.
In some ways, the title of the book is wrong, since some people may get the idea that this will be an instruction book on digital work in the arts.
The book is very well done, with good layout and the copies of the digital work is clear and colorwork is appropriate.
excellent.......2004-01-16
It is a excellent book to get some digital imaging ideal. Getting the ideal behind the image. Also a good starting point for digital imaging beginner(like me).Although the book cost much for me.

Painting People: Figure Painting Today
ASIN: 3775715908
Release Date: 2005-07-15 |
Book Description
In an age of increasing mobility and dissolving social bonds, the yearning for intimacy and security grows steadily stronger in western society. Plagued by uncertainty in the face of turbulent social and political systems and a sense of vulnerability generated by endless reports of war and horrific images of terror, many people are turning away from reality in search of safe havens and newly hopeful perspectives. Ideal Worlds explores the parallel reflection of this social trend in contemporary visual art. A new spirit of Romanticism is being revived in earnest by a number of young artists, from painters to new media practitioners, each of them in search of beauty, paradise lost, and the fictional world of fairytales. In some works, an emphasis on the individual and individual feelings goes hand in hand with a re-awakening interest in the landscape and its symbolic qualities. New Romanticism in Contemporary Art presents the work of some 15 artists, among them Justine Kurland, Catherine Opie, Laura Owens, and Christian Ward.

Book Description
The three plays collected in this volume were the first of Max Frisch's dramatic works to reach the public. Now for the first time they appear in English, thanks to the translation skills of Michael Bullock. These plays are of special interest both to students of modern drama and admirers of Frisch. Santa Cruz (1944), Frisch's first dramatic effort, has as its subtitle "A Romance," and represents an element of fantasy that runs through all his writing, but was never again to occupy such a pre-eminent position. Now They're Singing Again (1945), written under the immediate impression of World War II, tells of a soldier who is traumatized by what he sees, hears and feels on his journey through the smouldering battlefields of Central Europe. The radio play Rip Van Winkle (1953), written after Frisch heard the legend during his stay in the USA, foreshadows his novel Stiller. A famous sculptor returns to his native Switzerland after a long absence, during which he feels that his experiences have changed him into another person. He vehemently denies being the man everyone, including his wife, believes him to be. The theme, the imposition of identity, underlies virtually all Frisch's writing and became a central element in his philosophy.

1,000 Graphic Elements: Details for Distinctive Designs
ASIN: 3907078349 |
Book Description
Michel Fries and Thomas Bruggisser voyage through Switzerland in search of a new generation of young Swiss graphic designers. What they find is a Swiss design scene as "hip" as anything in London or Berlin. Influenced by the famous "Swiss School" of the 1950s and 60s, young Swiss designers today still hold concept and structure as functional beliefs, allowing artistic freedom in counterbalance to the service aspects of design.
Beautifully designed by the editors, Benzin is itself a statement on these theoretical questions. It includes detailed portrayals of twelve selected studios and images from 36 other designers making it a great sourcebook for anyone interested in graphic design today.
