Book Description

The national retail apparel business has grown to a $172 billion per year industry, and the employment rate for designers is expected to outpace that of all other occupations through the year 2008. The Fashion Designer Survival Guide is a must-have for the thousands of talented designers who want to see their dream of creating an independent fashion line become a reality.

Mary Gehlhar, author, industry authority, and consultant to hundreds of designers (including newcomers Alicia Bell, Keanan Duffty, and Milly), gives readers behind-the-scenes advice and essential business information on creating and sustaining a successful career as an independent designer. The Fashion Designer Survival Guide provides the necessary tools to get a fashion line or label up and moving on the right track, including: •Start-up costs and financing •Legal issues •Business plans •Public relations and sales •Marketing and manufacturing •Distribution-trade, trunk, and runway shows

This book also provides case studies from independent designers at different stages of their careers, including tough letdowns and exciting successes. Young designers weigh-in on topics important to them when they were starting out, while several top name designers offer personal perspectives on a single question, providing a window to their world and a variety of answers.

Designers are bursting with creativity but often fall flat going into business as an independent. The Fashion Designer Survival Guide provides designers with the one thing design school didn’t-intelligent and successful business practices.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must have to start your own fashion line.......2007-10-10

It tells you step by step what to do and what not to do, it even gives you places to go so you can get started and gives you that extra push you need to make it

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know and more.......2007-06-10

This book is the most concise source of information on how to mindfully start one's own clothing line. Detailed and clear, it outlines everything one needs to know from inseption and development through financials, incorporation, press, factory relations, shows and beyond. It is, by far, the most complete resource for any aspiring designer.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-06-01

I f you are starting a business this is the best book you can find.
You ll find a lot of advices that will be very helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money........2007-03-20

Ok I read this book and this other book called Fashion For Profit. This author obivously does not sound like she has really worked in the garment industry. It would be very scary to start a business taking advice from this book. It kind of reminds me of that old sewing lady professor you have in home economics class trying to tell you like you are a 4 year old trying to run a company, scary stuff if you ask me. I got all I ever needed out of Fashion For Profit. That book is strictly business. It's twice as much ,but you get what you pay for. Apparently the author of Fashion for Profit has been voted numerous times in the top 10 most influential in the California Apparel Industry by the California Apparel News. Bottom line you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars This book is absolutely fabulous! .......2007-02-13

I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about starting their own fashion design business. It answers any and all questions and best of all it provides resources that we all need (especially if we have no one to guide us). If you're a student of course you would have the resources provided to you by the school itself, but for someone who is doing this from natural talent and ideas, it's GREAT!!!

Book is very small with pictures of super high end stores. You know...2000 sq feet to showcase 10 t shirts.
Not for many people with stores. Go to Vegas and look at the stores there. At least you will get something for your money...

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Book!.......2005-08-20

A must have for anyone who is wanting to become a model. This book offers insight information that is both vital and informative. The authors, Eric Bean and Jenni Bidner illustrate this book with fantastic photographs and beautifully written compositions of what should be expected by models and what is expected of them. 5 out of 5 stars All the basics of what it takes to become a model.......2005-06-09

It's fitting that art and crafts book publisher Lark Books should then move to a book on photographic modeling, Complete Guide For Models: Inside Advice From Industry Pros: it's a logical transition and offers the power of an art book publisher paired with the expertise of a fashion photographer and fashion editor. Models will learn all the basics of what it takes to become a model for the artist; from posing for commercial print ads to special opportunities for men, women and child models. Complete Guide For Models could have easily been featured in our 'Business and Careers' section, but is profiled here so artists and art library holdings will catch sight of it: it's an important, recommended instructional guide for the reference collections of artschool, artists and sculptors.

5 out of 5 stars I Loved the interview with Supermodel, Carmen Dell'Orefice........2005-06-03

It was really informative hearing from a model who has modeled for 50+ years. I recently saw Carmen Dell'Orefice in a runway show in NYC, and she looks great. Great interview, great photos.

5 out of 5 stars I learned alot from this book.......2005-05-22

I live in a small town in California, and i want to be a model. I always dreamed of going to NYC and being a runway model. I asked a few of the agencies in nearby towns, but they didnt know much about NYC. I got this book, and it answered alot of questions i had about modeling. The modeling schools near me charged alot of money, to take classes, but i learned just as much from this book. I can't wait to go to NYC now.

5 out of 5 stars Could not stop.......2007-08-15

If you are just getting started in the industry, with no help, this is the perfect book.

5 out of 5 stars No frills how-to guide........2007-03-09

This is an excellent resource guide for anyone who wants to get into modeling. It's a very easy read and lays it out for you in simple terms. It basically says "do this", "don't do this". It's also a great book to read for parents who are interested in getting children involved in the industry. A great value overall.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of a tree!.......2006-07-30

Roshumba Williams may very well be the sweetest person on the face of the earth but this book is terrible! Contradictive statements, lackluster presentation, absence of photographs, surface information and a feel that it was published to grab a little piece of the book sales pie. I question if the positive comment writers really read this book. And how can anyone who knows this Roshumba Williams personally write an unbiased report about this book?
I am afraid this book was thrown together by a corporate ladder climber who duped Roshumba Williams into believing it was a great way to make MONEY. Doesn't seem to have been built for the end consumer in any way. I can see only two uses for this book. A door stop as I am now using mine. Or print the next batch on toilet paper thus rendering it useful.
A total WASTE of my hard earned dollars!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good if you want to be a fashion model.......2005-07-17

This is probably the best of the current books on the craft of modeling. It is limited to fashion modeling (little of use is said about other disciplines), but covers that exhaustively with very readable text and drawings to illustrate her points.

I don't know that you can learn to model from a book, but if you want to try, and want to be a fashion model, this is an excellent book to learn from.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of $$..........2004-10-13

I was surprised that Roshumba Williams, who is a beautiful woman, would be part of this kind of book. I seemed like someone who did'nt know much about modeling wrote this, and Roshumba put her name on it. There arn't even any pictures of her inside, no pictures at all.

Students and lecturers will find eXtensions the definitive textbook for those studying or training to offer hair extension services. This title is written specifically for students studying at level 3 in hairdressing and hairdressers on CPD training. Readers are provided with all the underpinning knowledge to cover the current national occupational standards, as well as informative, professionally produced step-by-steps showing each stage of the processes involved in creating hair extensions. Theresa Bullock takes an independent approach, which is not tied to one specific product manufacturer but rather offers an overview of all the various processes, products and techniques available.
