Book Description

Every parent hopes their child will be self-reliant, optimistic, and well mannered, a challenge in our current culture. Clinical psychologist and Jewish educator Wendy Mogel distills the ancient teachings of the Torah, the Talmud, important Jewish thinkers, and contemporary psychological insights into nine blessings that address key parenting issues such as:

* determining realistic expectations for each child
* respect for adults
* chores
* mealtime battles
* coping with frustration
* developing independence and self-control
* resisting over-scheduling and over-indulgence

The Blessing of a Skinned Knee guides us toward effective, enlightened parenting in an increasingly speedy, material, and competitive age.

5 out of 5 stars The Blessing Of The Skinned Kness.......2007-08-05

Simply the best parenting book I've ever read. Straightforward, simple and addresses every issue I've ever had with my kids. Intuitive and funny.

4 out of 5 stars Some good advice from a Jewish lady.......2007-07-21

This book is very good, in general. There are some unimortant things that the author feels we need to hear about anyway. But still, for everyone who has children, or is intereted in parenting, it is quite a helpful book. I personally do have desire to learn from any book that can teach me something different or make me look at things in a different way. I'm not Jewish yet I felt there is a lot to learn here from the Jewish tradition. Mostly, it is the simplicity which is mixed together with divinity that I find is a very interesting and positive concept. I do recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Take the time.......2007-07-06

I read this book when it first came out - read it once, twice, probably 3 times. The guidance here really helped get me through some challenging pre-teen years. My children (now older teens and college age) have all turned out better than I could have ever imagined! Parenting has a lot to do with following a clear path with frequently discussed values and clear expectations/consequences. I hope Wendy's messages continue to reach a lot of people.

5 out of 5 stars A very good parenting book .......2007-06-28

The overwhelming majority of readers of this book I know of have found it to be a wise, practical guide to better parenting. They found it replete with ways of making their child more respectful, self- reliant children as preparation to becoming better and stronger human beings.
There was only one person whose negative criticism raised a question in my mind, and this in regard to the authors' treatment of children who suffer special disabilities.
In any case I found that there was already a certain wisdom and direction in the way the contents of the book are structured. The reader opens with a chapter on the way she changed her whole practice of counseling children. She then has a chapter teaching parents how to accept the special character of their children. Her idea is basically that we should not simply take children as if they are blank slates in which parents write out their own needs and wishes. But rather each is a unique human being whose special qualities we must understand and help develop in a way best for them.(This accords with the traditional Jewish saying "Educate the child according to its nature") She too teaches the danger of over- protecting children.This is the focus of the title- chapter on the blessings of a skinned knee. She then considers the whole question of how we can find in ordinary decisions sparks of spirituality . She goes on to talk about the blessing of longing , and how important it is to teach children gratitude for what they have received. One of the main messages of the book is teaching children to overcome that kind of mentality in which they are perpetually hungry and dissastified, always looking selfishly for the next treat they can get. Mogel aims to teach parents how to teach Moderation in regard to physical demands, and appreciation for Good received. This connects up with the chapter in which she deals with the traditional Jewish terms for motivation ( Yetzer Hara- The Evil Impulse) and how children need to be taught how to use their drives in a beneficial way . She also speaks about Moderation in relation to food . In her last chapters she moves to more purely spiritual considerations, and teaches how parents should help in teaching their children Faith in God.
While much of the Teaching here has its basis in traditional Jewish teachings about raising children it is clear that the work has a universal meaning and application.

5 out of 5 stars Theology for every day.......2007-06-19

What I loved most about this book was the way in which the author marries theology with the nitty-gritty of everyday parenting decisions. The payoff for me personally has been a sense of joy, freedom and confidence as I rear my son. Mogel isn't only out to save kids' spirits or turn up the butane under the reader's observance of Judaism (I suspect that if I were Jewish, this book would have had such an effect on me); she wants to make parenting fun again, and she succeeds brilliantly. Witty, readable, and profound, this book is a real treasure. Don't miss it.

Book Description

Gary Smalley and John Trent's best-selling book offers a fresh, updated look at the life-changing gift the Bible calls "the blessing." Many of us-perhaps unknowingly-spend a lifetime striving for this acceptance. The unconditional love and approval that comes with the blessing is an important element of our self-esteem and emotional well-being.

In The Blessing, Dr. John Trent tells of his search to receive the blessing from his father and the new insight-and deeper blessing-he received from God as he sought to pick up the pieces of his shattered dream. And Gary Smalley expands the concept of the blessing to include eight ways to bless adult children. "I never realized how powerful-and how necessary-the blessing has become to my older children until now. So if you have older children who have moved away from home, they're never out-of-reach of the blessing."

The Blessing is a powerful book no family should be without. Within its pages, readers will find solid, practical advice on how to be a blessing as well as how to insure that your parents, spouse, and children all feel the security of family approval.

In the rush, rush, rush of too-much-to-do-and-no-time-to-do-it, the all-important, nurturing aspects of parenthood can easily disappear. Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Wherever You Go, There You Are and Myla Kabat-Zinn have collaborated on Everyday Blessings, a book that approaches parenting from the Zen Buddhist position of moment-to-moment awareness. It's a beautiful presentation and a thoughtful approach to mindful meditation that will help you slow down, enrich your life as a parent, and nourish the internal life of your children.

5 out of 5 stars Everday Blessings.......2007-05-29

Worthwhile reading for time-strapped parents who want to be more present in their everday interaction with their children.

2 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as I had hoped.......2007-04-05

I was hoping this book would help me learn to be a calmer, more patient, and contented parent. While there were lots of examples, I felt this book was rambling and didn't really give me practical help.

3 out of 5 stars Tepid.......2007-03-07

The Kabat-Zinns have written a unique book in as much as it is one of the very few that apply mindfulness to parenting. Those portions of the book, where this application is described, are very good. Afterall, Jon Kabat-Zinn has done a fair bit towards popularizing this form of meditative practice. However, the book falters when the authors advise about bringing up children and disciplinary issues. They fail to distinguish, in any practical way, between utter laissez faire and much-needed corrective action. The reader is left to his/her own devices to figure out a path that should be followed. Well, one really does not need a book to tell us that the path is unique and must be forged by each parent. The manner in which mindfulness can help in charting this path is poorly described.
Overall, I recommend this book only for a few chapters (approx. 75 pages) that are very good. The rest does nothing to improve parenting skills.

5 out of 5 stars Never too early!!.......2007-01-06

I read this book when I was 2 months pregnant with my first child. Now at 11 months old, I plan on rereading it. I'm a practicing Buddhist, so this fit with my belief. However, everyone can benefit from reading this book. People of all faiths can certainly relate. I passed it on to my sister, who is a Christian, and she had the same praise. Read it.

5 out of 5 stars Once the realization is accepted..........2006-11-10

I found this book very useful. A friend recommended it, and emailed me an opening quote, from Rainer Maria Rilke, which I thought a lot about:

"Once the realization is accepted that even between the closest human beings infinite distances continue to exist, a wonderful living side by side can grow up, if they succeed in loving the distance between them which makes it possible for each to see eachother whole against the sky."

I have twin girls, and a lot of the what the authors write about do not particularly resonate with me, but there are pieces of the book I really enjoyed, and reading it has helped me be more attentive to choices I make that will allow me see past the reactivity of my own mind, and helped me cultivate the greater calmness and insight that I need to bring to my parenting.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Journaling for the Next Generation.......2007-02-02

"Legacy work is different from autobiography, memoir, life review, and genealogy not so much in what is written, but in our intent." ~ pg. 2

Women's Lives, Women's Legacies is a practical and inspirational guide. Through a systematic approach women can access their beliefs and bless the next generation with a healing journal of life and love. Divided into three sections, there is a process of discovery through the past, present and future.

How did you receive your name? This section is fascinating and then an example of how to write about your name is given to provide perspective and inspiration.

"Begin by thinking about the home you lived in when you were growing up." ~ pg. 68

Through childhood memories you can start to create a picture of how you became who you are today. This section includes memory triggers, which are especially helpful. You may want to go through photo albums while experiencing this section of the book. I found it useful to photocopy groups of pictures for reference and organized my pictures by year.

I loved the section on "Reflections and Writing" where you complete sentences like:

What I have loved most about my life is...
A fairy tale, children's story, fictional character, or book that has had an important influence on my life is...

This book is amazing in its ability to help you remember long-forgotten memories. There are sections for friendship, family, motherhood, sexuality, spirituality and secrets. Throughout this creative work, there are some startlingly beautiful poems and wise quotes. There are lists of descriptive words you can expand on like: playful, sensual, and imaginative.

While this book is designed for journal-style writing, I think all writers and poets will find this to be especially inspirational and enriching experience. What will you leave for the next generation to discover?

One of my most treasured items is a diary my mother wrote about my first year of life and she also wrote a diary about her world travels. She is currently interested in genealogy and I think this book might be useful for anyone researching and writing about family history. This book would be perfect for a mother-daughter project or as a project for a woman's group. Women's Lives, Women's Legacies is a gift in itself and this could open the door to many worlds you want to visit time and again.

5 out of 5 stars Women's Lives, Women's Legacies - a radiant guidebook.......2003-10-03

I'm a woman who's been blessed with a long and varied life. I've always wanted to share my experiences with my nieces, and to offer them my hard-earned wisdom so that they might move into womanhood a little better informed than I was. I've also had an inner desire to be seen and valued by them.
The beautifully written and accessible WOMEN'S LIVES, WOMEN'S LEGACIES offers encouragement and serves as a guide so that I may begin to write my life and in the process, come to love and appreciate myself more fully. I love the personal stories and poetry in the book. As I read, I find myself moving to that spiritual place inside myself of loving my own being as well as all the women who've lived before me and those who will come after. This book is a celebration of and addition to the heritage of women.

5 out of 5 stars Women's Lives, Women's Legacies - Bravo.......2003-10-02

Women's Lives, Women's Legacies is a powerful tool to jump-start your own story and to share it with others. I found it thought provocing - answering questions about oneself, one's history, and future a wonderful communication tool. I enjoyed thinking about my naming process, secrets, values, and spirituality. The format of the book could be used in ways most suited to how I saw my own legacy. Being newly married I answered the questions for myself and then asked my husband about himself and his family-I learned new things about both. Whether you are married or single, have children or none, you will find your place is this beautifully written soul-searching book.

5 out of 5 stars Brings forth women's wisdom.......2003-09-30

I am a writer, counselor, and teacher in my 60's, married for over 40 years, with grown children and one grandchild. So I can recommend this book especially to midlife and older women. This book can help us harvest the fruits of our abundant life experience and share them with a wisdom-starved world.

Through stories, commentary, and especially "reflection and writing" suggestions, this book guides us to contemplate aspects and details of our lives we may tend to take for granted, plumbing the rich depths of their meaning to us, our families, and the world. To name just a few examples: pregnancy, miscarriage, and birth; hanging clothes on a clothesline, specific childhood memories, family relationships, friendships, personal rituals, illness and healing experiences, personal response to world events.

5 out of 5 stars Motivating and inspiring!.......2003-09-30

I must admit, I've read the personal stories, poems and quotes found throughout the book, but haven't finished the writing exercises; my spiritual ethical will is a work-in-progress! This book has inspired me to learn more about my roots, particularly my Jewish heritage. Since beginning the book I have contacted my great-aunt and have arranged to spend time with her next month, to better understand my genealogical and spiritual roots before moving ahead with the writing process.

As a social worker in long-term care and senior housing, I am acutely aware of how many women's stories go untold. I would love to use this book as a guide for a writing group; just think of all the stories and pearls of wisdom that could be saved!

This book proved to be very useful and insightful. Once I read it, I felt the urging need to give it as a gift to my family... it helps you understand many things about yourself, your family, relatives and even close friends. Issues and things that otherwise they would be very difficult to explain, recognize or even catalog. Read slowly and meditate a lot on it, and it will prove very helpful. Hope you are able to get it.

I can't believe that this revelation has not been preached and taught in my church. After reading this book, I gave my daughter the free CD and asked her to listen to it. I told her that if she got anything out of it to call and we would talk. She called the next day and we talked long and hard about generatinal curses in our life together and how it has already started to taint her life with her daughter. We prayed and bound the emeny. We claimed the blessings bought for us by our Lord. How amazing to feel the true freedom that only being a blood-bought Christian of authority can feel. Praise you Larry for sharing this with my family.

This was one of those books you start and can't put down. I enjoyed it so much - Some of the dilemma's she got into were so like today you forgot when the setting was. I would encourage others to read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Sophie's Dilemma.......2007-09-15

Lauraine Snellings' latest installment in the Daughter's of Blessing series, Sophie's Dilemma, which is a followup on the Red River Series, lives up to her past standards. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of the books she's written chronicling the lives of the Bjorkland family, their children, relatives and friends as they settle the Red River Valley. Excellent reading, I feel I know these people and like them very much. Keep them coming, Ms Snelling!

4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2007-09-13

This is a nice read. It's neat to watch Sophie grow up in the book and watch how God works in her life to turn tragedy around and give her hope and new beginnings.

5 out of 5 stars Impulsive Choices.......2007-08-06

Lauraine Snelling takes us back again to Blessing, North Dakota. This time she tells us the story of Sophie Knutson, daughter of Kaaren and Lars and twin sister of Grace. When Hamre Bjorkland returns, Sophie finds her childhood crush has grown to love. Against her father's wishes, she convinces Hamre to elope and they move to Seattle. However married life is not all that Sophie thought it would be and she soon finds that her honeymoon is not paradise. Unfortunately disaster strikes and Sophie must return back to Blessing, alone and now pregnant.

I really love the Bjorklund family. I've been reading the series for several years now and it's really cool to see the younger generation growing up. It seemed like yesterday that Ellie, Sophie, Grace and Astrid were all babies, now they're all grown women. Sophie is very headstrong compared with her twin. She is very young when she runs off with Hamre and learns from her mistake almost at once. I feel sorry for her because everything takes place so suddenly and she has no idea what to do. She is more feisty than Grace, who at first comes off as a "perfect" character. I'm glad though that Grace was portrayed being very angry with Sophie and took a while to forgive her. I didn't like Garth at first. I hate reading about men who abandon their children after their wife dies. I just don't like men who are so obsessed with their wives that they blame the new baby for killing her. He runs away without any thought for his children and thrusts them upon others to raise. It is not mentioned in this book but his relationship with his kids is going to be rocky from now on. One thing that was quite a shock was how two members of the Bjorkland family suddenly die in the middle of the book. It came out of nowhere and I was rather surprised. I also want to know why no one mentions about word getting sent to the oldest son still in Norway, did they forget about him? This is a wonderful book, an excellent adition to the Red River Saga. I'm looking forward to reading Grace's story and hopefully Astrid's as well.

Book Description

Offering thanks for our daily bread is just about universal. This collection of 120 mealtime blessings spans the globe and reaches back hundreds of years to include a wide range of sentiments, from the amusing to the heartfelt to the sacred. A Chinese proverb gives us this reminder, "When eating bamboo shoots, remember the man who planted them." The Irish lyrically ask that "the sweet light within you guide you on your way." And for those who like to cut to the chase, there's "Good bread, good meat, good God, let's eat." What they have in common is a joyous and heartwarming appreciation for life's bounty. Beautifully illustrated, these pages offer those gathered around the table time-honored words of gratitude. In the words of a 19th century blessing, "May others all these blessings share, and hearts be grateful everywhere."

5 out of 5 stars "The Gift..." is a blessing.......2007-10-09

I'm only on Chapter 9 and I can truly say this book is a blessing. It's scripturally based which equals total relevance to your life. It really "explains" the blessing. I love the book and it helped shed even more light on how blessed I am by family and how blessed I was by my grandparents who both passed this year.

I learned a lot about myself and my spouse with this succinct read. It was truly sage. I recommend it those looking to improve their relationships with family and friends.

2 out of 5 stars Typical Smalley and Trent.......2001-11-19

If you love Gary Smalley and John Trent, you'll like this book! But if you are looking for something new and refreshing about an unusual theme, you might well be disappointed. Smalley and Trent have taken what could have been an extremely dynamic topic and melded it around their common themes of family and relationships. The end product - full of their usual case studies - has little in common with the scripture references foundational to the book: the Blessings as seen in the Old Testament, with special emphasis on the patriarchal blessings found in Genesis. Specifically, they have taken what was meant to be a unique event in one's life and turned it into everyday occurrances through touch; spoken, meaningful words; and parents' commitment to see blessings through in their children's lives. Of course, these are important elements of relational life, but the Old Testament Blessing is so much more. Unfortunately, this time around, Smalley and Trent missed the mark.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for all families........1999-12-29

"The Gift of the Blessing" was truly an excellent, must have book for all families. I read it before my family, including grandchildren came for a week before Christmas and we were motivated to give each other daily blessings,by touch, kind words, written notes, etc.The book tells how to give blessings to your spouse, friends, children and parents. Family relationships can be improved greatly if following the advise in this book. It is a life changing book and a real blessing if you can come up with even more creative ideas after reading it.

Book Description

Through his ministry, Champions for Life, Bill Glass teaches the healing power of a father's blessing in cities, congregations, prisons and schools across America. His message is simple: a father's blessing can give a child the inspiration, reassurance and confidence to live life to its fullest potential. Glass defines a blessing as a gentle touch, a loving hug and a powerful verbal message of unconditional love. Bill Glass' father was a devout Christian, a father and a hero to Bill as a boy. Bill credits his phenomenal success in life as a professional football player, founder of the ministry, Champions for Life, and his own role as a successful father to his three children to the blessing his father gave him. Champions for Life is Bill's story in which he shares with readers his own wisdom and his tales from raising his children, his father's inspiring parenting stories and the role a blessing can play in one's life. By retelling his experiences as a father and son, Glass shares the wisdom of Christ and brings it into the homes of every family. Nothing is more rewarding to the giver and the receiver than the amazing, affirming results of a blessing. Glass encourages fathers to reach out to their families, sons and daughters with expressions of love and support. In giving a blessing, we are guided toward our destiny and are able to support our children in living theirs. Key Features Foreword from Billy Graham. Glass' ministry visits and teaches approximately 400,000 people a year. To all of these people, he preaches the importance of a blessing. Champions for Life will serve as a companion to this message. Glass' ministry has approximately 3,500 congregations in their network and these will all be contacted during the publicity and marketing of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great, Experience-Based Advice from a Prison Missionary and Retired NFL Player!.......2006-03-07

This book points out the extreme importance of having a father bless his children throughout their entire lives.

This may seem to be an alien concept in our secular culture, where too often people reject a father figure and act like fathers are optional. It is too "cool" and "trendy" these days to know single mothers who never married the father of their child, but the reality is that it devastates the self-image of the fatherless child.

Bill points out from experience that at all the prisons he witnesses at, it is always very hard, even impossible, to find an inmate who has a good relationship with their real father--they usually curse their father for not being there for them while they were growing up; which is the breeding ground for criminal activities and gang membership which becomes the surrogate family, and blesses the individual for doing criminal acts, instead.

I am a big fan of professional athletes who preach the Gospel, so I am very happy with this great book from Bill Glass!

Bill Glass is a retired NFL football player from the 1960's, who has been heavily involved with his own prison ministry for decades, Champions for Life.

This book is basically Bill Glass writing about the importance of a Father's Blessing in the life of everybody, not just prisoners--everybody needs that affirmation and encouragement from their father (or father figure)!

Not only is the blessing important, but the curse is also discussed. What parents say negatively to or about their kids has a major effect. Bill discusses his personal, accidentally inflicted curse, when he overheard his mother telling someone that Bill was not good looking at all. No parents are perfect, and his mother never even knew that he overheard that remark, but it haunts Bill over 60 years later, throughout his entire life. What your parents say about you really DOES matter, though, hurt people try to shrug it off.

Bill discusses that, too. If a parent refuses to bless, or has died, then you must forgive the parent and seek the blessing from another father figure.

The blessing must always be unconditional. Bill uses his sports experience to contrast between unconditional blessing versus coaching. Coaches are never satisfied, always push for more, and their blessing is dependent upon performance, because the coaches job is on the line, and so is the athlete's job, if winning is not achieved. Coaching is performance based. Parenting and blessing is unconditional, NOT dependent upon a child's performance or achievements. We have to bless our kids just because they are our kids, NOT because they first had to achieve a goal, like a good report card. Belonging to the family is unconditional, but remaining on a sports team is achievement dependent.

Bill is helped by pro sports writer Terry Pluto, but this is essentially the thoughts of Bill Glass, relating anecdotes from his own life, prisoners he has met, and Bible passages. Terry and Bill have been great friends since 1996, when Terry got Saved, after obseving one of Bill's Prison sessions for a writing assignment.

I like this book because you learn a lot about Bill's own life, his football career, and how Bill's parents raised him in a Christian manner. Bill Glass was a player on the championship Cleveland Browns, one season before the first Super Bowl. If the annual Super Bowls has started one year earlier, Bill would have been a winner of the first Super Bowl.

This book is very personable, not technical or clinical. Reading it is like hanging out with a really great, caring Christian fellow who wants to help people by learning from the mistakes of others. This book is full of common sense advice, which is actually not commonly practiced, these days.

Another good book by a Christian and former NFL player is IN THE TRENCHES by Reggie White, an NFL Football Hall of Famer. There is something about being a huge, macho football player that seems to make these Christian athletes more daring and unashamed to use their sports fame to push the message of the Gospel. I love reading books by these pro athlete Christians.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Families.......2007-01-04

This little book is great. It provides beautiful and simple prayer services for different ocassions. This is a must for families interested in developing a family spirituality and family traditions. I highly recommend it. I often give it, together with a blessing cup, as a wedding gift.

5 out of 5 stars Blessing Cup.......2006-03-16

I really like this book. It has been a wonderful spiritual tool for my family. The way it ties scripture and prayer to different events in our lives helps us see God more fully. It is a comfortable way to pray together and to bring our cares to God as a family. I have already purchased this book to give to others.

5 out of 5 stars A family tradition.......2006-01-17

Having grown up using prayers from this book to start and bless important meals, I now pass the book on to friends. The book, coupled with a chalice to pass following the prayer selected, makes a great wedding or other celebratory gift. There are prayer rituals for practically every significant life event you can think of. Recently my husband and I reflected on the prayer in times of natural disaster following the Katrina hurricane. It's a great family tradition to use the Blessing Cup prayers.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Resource for our Family.......2005-09-18

I am part of a large family with many of us attending different Christian churches. We have begun a tradition of offering a cup of blessing (Kiddush, from the Passover Meal) when we get together for a family event. This tradition allows to all "commune" together, uniting us in Christian love. The Blessing Cup is a perfect source of prayers for many occasions. I would recommend this tradition and the book to all families!
