Book Description
Author Chris Lytle had modest career aspirations. He merely wanted to be the next Walter Cronkite. But instead of being offered a job in the newsroom, he was offered a job in the sales department. He took the sales job and became an "accidental salesperson."
Most people don't choose sales as a career. Sales chooses them--and they end up wondering how to make the most of a profession they were never prepared for.
They don't have to wonder anymore. In THE ACCIDENTAL SALESPERSON, Lytle gives readers the road map for excelling in sales. Lively and entertaining, this somewhat unorthodox guide is packed with thought-provoking axioms, humorous and instructive anecdotes, specific strategies, and powerful tools--everything readers need to master essential lessons in sales and professionalism.
Readers will find there are some things THE ACCIDENTAL SALESPERSON lacks--dull theories, manipulative methods, and high-pressure tactics. But with the wealth of money-generating, career-building techniques it does provide, we don't think those items will be missed.
Customer Reviews:
I ACTUALLY READ THE BOOK...........2007-10-04
I read this book and can attest that this book is NOT what it seems to be. The reviews claim this to be the best sales book of all time, but these reviews lack capacity in what is acutally contianed in this book.
The book shows you gimmicks and silly methods used for prospecting. The real world deals with professionals. I am a stock broker and would not want to be associated with these type of methods or have them by any means reflect my line of business.
I would recommend two books: 1. "How to Master the Art of Selling" by Tom Hopkins 2. "Advanced Selling Strategies: The Proven System of Sales Ideas, Methods, and Techniques Used by Top Salespeople Everywhere" by Brian Tracy. These are real books with so much information to be absorbed under one read.
I won't lie to you and tell you that one single book outhere is the best. But these two books combined is the best sales modus you will develop.
Shortcut to success.......2007-07-19
This work is intented for those who, as the author (or as me), have been launched towards a profession that could earn your own money but could stress your nervous system. This guide helps you to focus on the right directive without being distracted by jaws-men or uneducated-chieves.
Really dealed just to understand how to move in this sea of difficulties
A Must For Any Salesperson.......2007-07-07
Chris Lytle has put together an excellent process for sales success. While there is little new in sales under the sun, his treatment of the selling process is fresh and very effective.
I've been using his pre-approach letters and his preparation process for sales interviews with solid success. His techniques work!
Excellent investment.......2007-05-11
I have been purchasing this book for my new Sales Reps for the last several years. They always come back and thank me. It helped me tremendously and many others. Each story / example is short but full of insight. Not your typical sales manual.
Down To Earth Guide.......2007-03-17
Chris has put together a practical guide for all sales people. This is a must-read for anyone finding themselves trying to make a living in the world of selling.
Book Description
Thinking of oneself as "self-employed" - and "the boss" of one's life and work - is the key to personal and professional development, says Cliff Hakim. He shows how to use his pioneering Worklife Creed as a basis for a new, satisfying philosophy of work and life. Providing a clear roadmap for finding purpose and passion in work, this revised edition includes a refined Worklife Creed, greater emphasis on taking full responsibility for one's worklife and understanding and expressing one's own uniqueness, and a "Who's the Boss?" section that acts as a practical and potent take-anywhere toolbox.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended companion reading with Judith Bardwick's 'Danger in the Comfort Zone'!.......2007-03-27
1) 'Danger in the Comfort Zone: From Boardroom to Mailroom: How to Break the Entitlement Habit That's Killing American Business'
by Judith M. Bardwick
2) 'We Are All Self-Employed: How to Take Control of Your Career'
by Cliff Hakim
'Danger in the Comfort Zone' is one of the very good books I had acquired while attending a boot-camp for entrepreneurs in the United States during the early nineties. (My copy is actually the earlier edition.) At that time, I had read it very seriously. I had really liked the author's ideas of earning mentality (or habit) vs entitlement mentality (or habit).
The many problems & scenarios which the author had described candidly about the American workplace were not much different, when I compared them with Singapore's. Contemporarily, Singapore's employers had encountered the same dilemma. It was only after the economic recession during the mid-eighties & then the Asian financial fiasco during the late nineties that employees' attitudes, in both the private as well as public sector, had changed tremendously. Likewise, employers' attitudes had also followed suit.
At first glance, the author would seem to have criticised employees but I feel the principal premise of the book is more to urge employees to take charge of their own lives by getting out of the comfort zone & moving into the stretch zone. That is true self empowerment: adopt the earning mentality rather than the entitlement mentality!
Of course, employers would have to play their part to gain employees' confidence & trust. Their 'command & control' attitude in the past would have to change.
Hence, I would strongly recommend readers to read also 'We Are All Self-
Employed: The New Social Contract for Working in a Changed World' by Cliff Hakim. This book was written in the mid-nineties & my copy is also the earlier edition.
I feel the two authors' brilliant ideas gel very well with each other. In fact, their combined work will make more sense when read syntopically. They will help you transform the way you think about & approach your employment in the corporate world.
To paraphrase the latter book: "It will inspire you to move from the role of dependent employee, ever-adapting to survive, to independent-Interdependent worker, ever-creating to succeed. You'll learn to embrace a "self-employed" attitude to achieve the success you have always yearned for. Adopting a "self-employed" attitude will prepare you for the inevitable changes that come with time, & help you create a new definition of success rooted in your own interests, skills, values, & desires. It will help you move from merely surviving on the job to engaging your creativity - embedded in the responsibility symbolized by self-employment - & successfully employing yourself in a way that draws on your talents, interests, & deepest values."
I had really enjoyed reading both books tremendously.
In some way & to some extent, the wonderful ideas from the two foregoing books had consciously as well as unconsciously contributed to my eventual decision to take charge of the second half of my life.
Practical without bogging you down.......2006-08-30
This book is more useful that Parachute because it acts as a career counselor. The questions, exercises, and advice don't overwhelm the reader allowing him/her to finish the book. Hakim doesn't belittle the reader for being lost. One quote stands out: "You must be willing to "be lost enough to find yourself."" Robert Frost p 200.
A Very Important Book.......2003-11-10
'We Are All Self-Employed' is not just a good book, it is an important book. The author's message, while inspirational, is firmly grounded in the reality of today's world of work. It is essential reading for anyone looking to take charge of his or her career regardless of whether they are just starting out, in mid-career, unemployed or just thinking about improving the quality of their work life. It most certainly belongs on the bookshelf of any career professional committed to helping others reach their career potential.
Book Description
For every successful person in a perpetual-crisis mode--swimming in papers, overrun with complicated new technology, hamstrung by details, and starving for time--here are simple, practical strategies for getting back your desk, your peace of mind, and most of all your time.
Customer Reviews:
Alex Lubarsky.......2001-03-27
I think that it is very funny that our lives have become so complicated that we need a book to teach us how to simplify it, but need it we do. Jan Jasper has put together what seemed like a million simple ideas on how to get through all the stuff that screems for our attention. To accomplish more, to enjoy our life more, to do the things that are important to us, we must purge all the time wasters. "Take back your time" gave me a view from a different angle so that I can make a choice on what to keep and what to purge. I am glad I bought it! P.S. For me "Think and grow rich", How to win friends, and influence people", The majic of thinking Big" are five star books. "Take back your time" is a strong four.
SUPER BOOK for the 2000's.......2000-12-22
This book does a great job focusing on today's concerns for people of the 2000's, especially urban-dwelling, business-types, with limited time, limited space, and a desire to prioritize their work and home environments. The practical, incremental solutions Ms. Jasper offers are things a reader can implement immediately. I've read this book twice already and intend to re-read it periodically to check-up on my progress in reducing stress and organizing my business and personal time. In the new e-world filled with 'Self-Help' books (and I've read a lot of them...) this is a fresh approach with current ideas. GREAT BOOK !!
Control your life as well as your time!.......2000-11-27
"Take Back Your Time" is an intelligent, easy-to-read, and helpful book for getting "unstuck". I had been stymied by the number of things on my "to-do" list -- important personal pet projects, desires to change old habits, business development ideas -- and Jasper's book provided the keen insight I needed to begin to dislodge my inertia! Jasper also made me aware that organizational skills do not equal efficient working skills -- a crucial distinction. I had check marks and notations on many of the pages of the book. I plan to lend it to my business partner, whose desk is one giant "In Box"!
The best investment I made this month!.......2000-10-30
Before I read this book, I thought I knew what my problem was. There was simply too much to do in too little time, and the situation was completely hopeless. After reading just three chapters of "Take Back Your Time," I had already gained an entirely different perspective. Applying Jasper's advice on setting priorities and weeding out time-consuming, unnecessary chores helped me regain several hours weekly. Now I actually have time for some of the fun things I'd totally given up on finding time for. Plus, at the office, I'm now able to meet my deadlines without compromising the quality of my work.
A functional tool for survival in the clutter jungle........2000-10-24
This is a rare treat. The book actually delivers what it promises. For those of us who find ourselves overwhelmed with daily clutter and are fighting an uphill battle to keep ahead of our increasingly formidable schedules, we are finally offered a workable set of solutions. If you follow the suggestions offered by Ms. Jasper there will come a point where you suddenly realize your life is not an accelerating treadmill. There is a real benefit to a publication which offers attainable goals and a real template for success.

Basic but up-to-date manual for career change.......2006-04-24
If you've been downsized or fired, have recently graduated from college or graduate school, or are simply unhappy with your career choices, this book lays out a systematic process for finding a new job - one that you will enjoy and that will fit your abilities. Catherine B. Beck recommends starting with a couple of exercises in self-knowledge. First, create a "product profile" of yourself, to help you understand the skills you'll bring to your next position, and then write your ideal job description. She provides detailed advice on setting up a home job-search office, writing a professional-looking resume, surviving the job interview and negotiating a job offer. We recommend this guide to new graduates, employees who want a change and career coaches looking for useful advice to give their clients.
Absolutely a "Must Have" Career Guide.......2005-01-10
This is an extremely well written, practical guide for managing one's career. It is easy to follow and presents logically. The examples are outstanding in that they illustrate tasks as well as span numerous professions. It takes the reader through every consideration that should be part of the job search--a "must have" for job seekers who want to learn how to pursue, evaluate, and achieve their best career move.
An Excellent Guide!.......2004-12-01
When my husband was considering a job change he found the information in this book to be invaluable in helping him update his resume. The resume guidelines were very helpful in making sure that his resume had a professional appearance and that all the pertinent information was included. The sample resumes and cover letters were a great help as well. This is a comprehensive, easy-to-read guide, and I highly recommend it.
Great for small town or big city job searches........2004-11-30
I have been really impressed with this book. It has a lot of great ideas and examples for anyone job hunting or changing careers. I especially liked the interviewing questions with suggested responses and the section on salary and negotiation. I have already recommended this book to several friends and will continue to recommend it to everyone I know who is looking for a job or thinking of getting a new job.
A job search workshop in book form.......2004-11-13
Career consultant and management coach Catherine Beck presents It's Your Career: Take Control!, a job search workshop in book form. Covering everything from self-assessment to resume writing, interview techniques, practical exercises, sample forms, case studies, advice for negotiating one's compensation package and much more, It's Your Career is up-to-date on the latest trends - such as the recent acceptibility of a two-page resume rather than a one-page resume if one has more than five years' experience, a change brought around by increased employment turnover in the constantly changing modern world. It's Your Career presents need-to-know tips, tricks, and guidelines in a manner that anyone seeking the job best suited for them can immediately absorb. Highly recommended.

Are These Dream-Busters Keeping You From Going After Your Dreams?
Today
With Just A Little Encouragement, You Can Take Control Of Your Life And Truly Live A Richer, More Balanced Life Doing Work You Really Love
"By the time you've hit your 20's," says Walter Anderson, author of Courage is a Three Letter Word and The Greatest Risk of All, "you'll have heard a whopping 25,000 "can'ts."
Twenty-five THOUSAND
that's a lot of "can'ts."
"You can't work at what you love and make a good living." "Impossible. Can't be done."
What most people call "reality" is a very poor place to nurture dreams
and to share them to others? Forget it.
Erma Bombeck once said, "It takes a lot of courage to show your dreams to someone else." Erma knew that other people's fear, skepticism and negativity can be as contagious as the flu. And unless you've built up your immune system, these dream stompers can knock you - and your precious dreams - for a loop.
Don't believe me? Imagine announcing to your family and friends that you've decided to quit your job to become a writer, or a personal organizer, or an aroma-therapist, or work with animals, or pursue your love for antiques, or travel the world for a year. What do you think their reaction would be? Would they encourage you to "go for it?" Or might it sound more like this
"Yeah, right in your dreams."
"It'll never work."
"Better to play it safe."
If you listen to the naysayers out there, the message is loud and clear. Stay stuck, don't even dare to hope, forget your dreams.
Is it any wonder you're probably finding it hard to take control of your life and whole-heartedly pursue your dreams?
Think about how all the "It'll never work," "Forget your crazy dreams," "You should be happy that you have a job," messages have buried themselves deep into your psyche and affected how you see the world.
For example, if you sat down right now and took a personal inventory of your life, would your list look something like this?
~I'm miserable in my job. But it's impossible to make any money doing what I love.
~I feel like life is passing me by... but there's nothing I can do about it.
~I keep thinking there has to be more to life than this
. I suppose I should just forget my crazy dreams
Sound familiar? Okay, so what do you do?
Well, for starters you might want to think about what will happen if you do nothing. Close your eyes and picture what your life will be like if you continue to be ruled by your fears and self-doubts and heed the red lights thrown up by your well-meaning family and friends. In other words, imagine staying where you are right now
day after day, year after year dragging yourself through the work week until you retire. Pretty scary isn't it?
Now imagine feeling encouraged and empowered to go after your dream. Picture yourself looking back at your life and basking in the self-satisfaction of knowing you went for it
. If you like the way that felt then you've already begun to experience how powerful it is to readjust your thinking. You see the thing is
If you really want to create a more balanced, rewarding life doing work you truly love, you'll need to create a mindset that will instantly turn `can't' into `can.' There will always be dream dashers.
But the world is also full of people who believe in the power of a dream. There's just no better way to adjust your mindset than by "hanging out" with a group of people who know how to guide you along your path and give you that inspirational jolt you need to stop wishing and start doing.
That's exactly what you'll get in Yes You Can! The Inspirational Kick in the Pants You Need To Take Control Of Your Life and Go After Your Dreams.
In Yes You Can!, I've gathered today's foremost life-change experts to supercharge your efforts and ignite your passion. People like

An Absolutely Fabulous Read!.......2006-07-27
I think I was most surprised by the fact that this book is a compilation of articles by different people. Once I got past that, I began to realize that each person had, to varying degrees, experienced the anxiety I've felt at being locked into a job that brings no joy. To realize that there are others are taking that leap into the unknown and finding happiness while the "normals" stand by and scratch their heads at what is surely insanity is massive relief. And to find that these "insane" people are holding their hands out to the rest of us who are a little afraid of our inner "insanity" to show us the way and to help us to realize that not going after our dreams is indeed the end of our happiness. Going after our dreams should be the "normal" thing to do, and Thank You to people like Valerie Young, Barbera Sher, Jerry Stocking ("Quitting A Job - Without Plan B", read the "Yes You Can" book and you'll know what I'm talking about!), and others who are helping us fraidy cats get out there and take control of our lives!

Author Taped for National Television.......2003-11-15
Just realized I could not leave a message without rating my own book (which does seem a bit awkward). I've recently taped two segments for the national NBC daytime reality show "Starting Over", where I did some career counseling for a member of the cast. Filming in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood--the show chronicles the lives of six women, each experiencing some type of life transition. A Must Read for Serious Career Changers.......2003-06-06
"I found Career Change to be full of practical and helpful strategies (including real life experiences of 10 career changers). Dr. Helfand has put together a treasure of resource material much needed in these troubling recessionary times. The author's writing style is very down to earth and easy to read. The highight for me was the 50 plus page Chapter on helping people identify career options with the use of a case study, the actual complete assessment details of a real person..........very helpful in seeing how to get your results and understand them. No other book I'm aware of quite covers this topic so thoroughly. Kudos to Dr. Helfand for hitting a grand slam Home Run in the World Series of job search and Career Change.
Save your money.......2003-05-29
I did not find this book helpful at all. It is packed with academic speak and very little practical material. I would recommend Richard Bolles' What color is Your Parachute, Howard Figler's The Complete Job Search Handbook, and J. Michael Farr's How to Get the Job You Really Want (this book is more of a manual and has some great ideas in terms of job searching and how to go about it. This one is definitely a must).
"Best of the Bunch".......2003-02-27
Randall Hansen, Ph.D., Webmaster/Publisher of the leading career website Quintcareers.com had this to say about Career Change:
"There is no question that if you are to use just one book in making the decision to change careers, that Helfand's Career Change is the book to use.....extremely thorough, provides excellent and empowering examples.....an impressive and comprehensive book about career change, the best of the bunch".
February, 2003.
Barbara Grauer, Book Review Editor for the Career Planning & Adult Development Journal had this to say about Career Change,
".....valuable resource, remarkable book, written with enthusiasm and the utmost sensitivity, a wonderful compendium of the best strategies for a major career change, used as a bible and guide--one could effect a career change with fabulous results".

An excellent choice for career-changers and career evaluator.......1998-11-28
Take Control of Your Career means just what it says: it's up to you to act on your dissatisfaction with your current career or your curiosity about how to revitalize your current career, and this book shows you how to do either or both. It is an excellent distillation of Kevane's in-person career counselling. It also contains some helpful advice about how and why career stress causes relationship stress. Intelligent, practical, helpful, and clear; I recommend this book highly.
