Book Description

Finally—A Pregnancy Book That Won't Put Men to Sleep
My Boys Can Swim! tells real men everything they really want to know about pregnancy, such as: How much is it going to cost? Why does your wife primp before seeing her doctor when she hasn't put a stitch of make-up on for you in months? And, most important, what's it going to do to your sex life?
This rollicking, laugh-out-loud book is for expectant dads in search of bottom-line pregnancy information, without all that boring touchy-feely stuff you find in those books written for women. Inside you'll discover helpful—and hilarious—information and insights on such topics as:
The Maternity Wardrobe: "A key part of the maternity wardrobe is maternity underwear—parachute-like undies big enough to fit an NFL defensive lineman."
Baby Names: "Don't give your kids mockable names like Thaddeus, which is Greek for 'I'm a dork and should be beaten up.'"
The Birth: "No one told me it's normal that babies' heads can be misshapen at birth. I was convinced that my wife gave birth to Veldar, the conehead."

4 out of 5 stars Perfect book for dads-to-be.......2007-09-24

My husband used to read books all the time. But now only has time for things about the length of a newspaper or magazine article. This book is really short and funny. So it keeps his attention enough to actually be informed as to what is going on. He reads a little at a time while things progress. And has laughed out-loud on a couple of occasions.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for new dads!.......2007-09-18

My husband LOVED this book. It's written from a husband's point of view which is hilarious. While it doesn't provide tons of medical info, it gives just enough for my husband to understand some of what I'm going through. Each night he read some of it outloud so we could both enjoy it. The humor in the book was great and it has helped him realize that neither of us is going crazy...all of this is normal. I definitely recommend this book to any dad. They will certainly enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great for the father to be.......2007-09-16

My husband enjoyed this book and learning about what to expect. The humor in it is great and the topics are right on target in each trimester. My husband kept telling me what he learned from the book.

1 out of 5 stars For dumb dads.......2007-09-13

This was a totally dumbed down book. My husband actually likes being a father and was insulted by this book. This is for a dad who likes to sit on the couch, drink beers, and not do stuff with his kids. Sorry book.

1 out of 5 stars yeah...whatever.......2007-08-23

The author tries to have that cute "Dave Barry" thing but instead just plays on old stereotypes that all guys do is watch football and don't know thing about women's bodies or what happens with a pregnancy. My wife and I are expecting our first child and I was thinking this may be informative. Instead it was a quick, one day read with jokes that wouldn't even be funny enough for Mad Magazine on a bad day. Sorry, but this one wasn't for me and felt like a waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but not scientific.......2007-09-25

How does a person become a spiritual/sex guru? I was curious and decided to purchase and read this book.

I did some research on David Deida, and it appears he has no formal education on either psychology or human sexuality. What he does appear to have, however, are powerful insights into eastern beliefs on sexuality greatly differing from our own western version.

Although the author sites absolutely no scientific rationale to provide support for his views, I found his views to be fascinating. For example, in a chapter "Stop Hoping for Your Women to Get Easier":

"So she will test you. She might not be fully conscious of why she is doing it, but she will poke your weak spots, especially in moments of your superficial success, in order to feel your strength. If you collapse, you've flunked the test....It never ends. A woman will always test her man for the pleasure of feeling his strength in loving, his capacity to transcend nuisance, his persistence in his own truth, and his capacity to share that truth in love with her, even when she is complaining- especially when she is complaining."

The author provides a refreshing eastern perspective on sexuality, masculinity, and feminity. It isn't entirely politically correct. But it is sexually correct. I am sure not all feminists would agree with the author's views. But those who seek the truth will find the author's unique perspective to be invigorating as having a good night with a woman who loves, and therefore tests, him.

5 out of 5 stars MUST reading for all men.......2007-09-20

This is the 'how-to" book our fathers could never write (God bless them), and the best men's book on relationship I've ever read. Not because it teaches you tricks, or how to please a woman, but because it it shows men how to stand in our masculine power as our true selves, rather than someone who denies themselves to please others. I could never be in the incredible relationship I'm in today without the lessons I've learned from this book, and that includes having clear boundaries where self respect, awareness, integrity and purpose must come first in our lives. We always get the relationship we deserve...this book helps us deserve more. I use this book as a basis for the men's group I'm leading.

3 out of 5 stars Great look at sex in loving relationships.......2007-09-09

I was impressed at the level of honesty by the author. He was very open about his desires and fantasies, and how these can exist in a committed relationship. He really teaches that it is not our dark side that is inappropriate, but how we handle it.
His views on the relationship dynamic were also helpful. The male and female priorities are inherently different, and once we accept these differences, love can actually exist. This theory has helped me in my personal life and relationships.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is willing to be honest about their relationships and sexual life.

5 out of 5 stars Unravel the mysterious behavior of women!.......2007-08-30

Deida gives guys a great guide to understanding the often maddening behavior of their woman. He explains what they are really desiring and how we can satisfy those desires.

I've been astounded at the reactions I get from girls who I share his ideas with. They unanimously confirm that he's right on track. I wish I had known these secrets sooner in life!

A must read for any guy who wants a fulfilling relationship rather then a maddening one. Also, woman could also learn a lot about themselves and their guys by reading this.

1 out of 5 stars totally made up .......2007-08-26

The author of this book must be laughing all the way to the bank. He has no credentials and doesn't support anything he says with any research - just his own opinion. Seems to be written for the man who only wants to get ahead - and this makes him feel good about it. Come on guys - we're talking the 1950s male mindset....

Book Description

It's Sunday morning. Where are all the men? Golfing? Playing softball? Watching the tube? Mowing the lawn? Sleeping? One place you won't find them is in church. Less than 40 percent of adults in most churches are men, and 20 to 25 percent of married churchgoing women attend without their husbands. And why are the men who do go to church so bored? Why won't they let God change their hearts?

David Murrow's groundbreaking new book reveals why men are the world's largest unreached people group. With eye-opening research and a persuasive grasp on the facts, Murrow explains the problem and offers hope and encouragement to women, pastors, and men. Why Men Hate Going to Church does not call men back to the church-it calls the church back to men.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Undusting the church to make it more attractive to men.......2007-09-01

I just finished the book trying to find the reason why there are so few men in church today. More over, why there are so few men my age group (single and around 30).

The book gives a thouroughly researched based study going far down to the bottom of the matter to understand, illustrate and also give advice how to reach the Church-shy Male of today. It's gotta real healthy dose of humour and christian self criticism that would make even a "stout" Christian crack up and recognize the truth behind the comments.

For me it's an inspiration and an eye opener to understand my own male church goer needs (and at times the lack of fullfillment) and what I can do to bring my unchurched buddies to God without having to make them sit through a sermons that really does not reach them and an environment that could make them feel uncomfortable.

My quest goes on to reach my masculine spiritual needs and the wish to reach my circle of friends, work, social, but also church buddies to discover the adventure of being an upright christian and becoming "Sons of God".

Thanks to this book and the inspiration it has given me, I hope that I can start influencing my own church, country (Switzerland) and beyond. Would be great if this book was translated to German ASAP because the market in Europe is huge and the (male) church attendance (as the book illustrates) devastating!

Have a go at this book and see what the reasons are for the malre absence and what can be done already, with small adjustments in your life and/or Church and see how the men start coming back!

3 out of 5 stars Some good points, but it missed the mark........2007-08-20

I have mixed feelings about this book. In part, it is because I agreed with the author when I read the book, but after I had some time to think about it, I concluded that he missed the mark. Murrow has a writing style that is easy to read, so I had no trouble reading the book from cover to cover. What is missing from Murrow's book is the proof. His basic premise is that men do not like church because it is not manly enough. Where is the proof that churches are not manly enough? Is it enough to say that there are elements that are better suited for women? I do not think so.

Part of the reason that I initially agreed with Murrow was that I can look at my own church and see some of the things that he suggests favors women. There are people within our church who take special care to see that the building looks attractive. On any given Sunday, a person can hear discussion of the Christian romance novels that grace several shelves of the church library. There are plenty of social gathering activities that are primarily handled by women. It is easy to look at these things and conclude that since we have these things, that is the reason that men are not coming to church, but there is a problem with this.

The problem that I see with the premise is that I can look at our church and I see men who are attending church. I see men who are actively involved in church. I have neither counted, nor do I intend to, but it would not surprise me if we found that there are more men then women who are actively involved in church activities. The actual numbers would probably fairly close, but we have many men who are involved in many different tasks. Some of these tasks fit within those that Murrow seems to think are not manly enough, while others may be.

Murrow's book may be a good way to start the discussion of why some men do not like church, but it should not be taken to be the definitive guide. I believe there is more work that needs to be done before we draw any firm conclusions. There may be some need to revamp some of the programs in churches, but I cannot help but think that if more men were involved the programs would automatically take on a more manly flavor rather than revamped programs being what is needed to draw men back to church.

5 out of 5 stars I finally get it!.......2007-08-20

After years of not understanding why the masculine men in my life can have strong faith and yet hate going to church, I finally get it. Church is geared toward women. Simple? Yes. But it took this book to explain it to me. This book offered concrete examples of feminine practices I see in every church I attend but never recognized as reasons why my men avoid church. Read it; think about it; use it.

2 out of 5 stars A bit narrow.......2007-08-13

The book has some good principles at the end about the needs of men. But, it is terrible in application and simplifies things so much so. I think it could cause another worship war. The publishers are probably glad for the "shockjock" type tone. I am not. What about hispanic or other cultures? The author really did not think too well about how diverse our nation is and did not acknowledge that he sees beyond a white-middle class culture.

Besides the negative, I do think he brings out a very important discussion. I just wish he was more culturally aware since he most likely is preaching to a choir that already hates anything that is too creative and is looking for validation.

5 out of 5 stars This book is SPOT ON!.......2007-06-21

I am posting this under my wife's account, but I swear I am a man! :)

Murrow has definitely nailed men's ministry and he understands men and their needs. If you lead a church or are involved with ministering to men, this is a MUST read. I bought his DVD and his book, the dvd was great, agreed with 99% of it, and I am currently half way through the book. I am underlining probably 30-50 words per page. 5/5 STARS!!!

In Men at Work, political pundit George Will breaks baseball down, parsing it into essential tasks: hitting, fielding, pitching, and managing. Why do some succeed grandly while others are more apt to whiff? By analyzing the way Tony Gwynn, Cal Ripken, Orel Hershiser, and Tony LaRussa approach the game and do what they do, he finds striking similarities in intelligence, dedication, drive, and desire.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars behind the scenes..........2007-04-12

George Will's passions for America's great pastime is evident in every story. He goes behind the scenes for the details and strategy that is involved in every pitch. His look at the manager, pitcher, hitter and fielder will add insight to the game and garner a deeper appreciation of the game within the game. A great baseball book!

1 out of 5 stars Give me a break!.......2006-03-05

If you're looking for a good baseball read, look further. The absolute twerpiness of George Will comes across in this book. It's clear that when he was a youngster, he was the nerdy kid in the schoolyard. This is the typical example of a pinheaded intellectual trying to sound like an average Joe by writing about sports. Give me a break George Will!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-02-27

This is a fascinating journey into the national pastime. George Will writes economically and wisely not only about what the game is, but also what it once was. The evolution of the sport - although that is certainly not the focus of the book - is illuminating for anyone who is interested in how institutions come to change. Will brings a deep explanation to the chief facets of the game - managing, pitching, hitting and defense. Ultimately they groove together to form a gorgeous tapestry of understanding. There's a word for this kind of non-fiction work: indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! I read it over and over and never tire of it.......2006-02-16

If you enjoy the sport of baseball, you gotta read this book. George Will provides insights into the details of baseball by examining the game from the perspective of the Manager, the Batter, the Pitcher and the Fielder. It's wonderful the descriptions of the minute aspects that make the difference between a regular player and someone with the skills like future Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. I've read this book many times, and I never tire of the stories of how this game is meant to be played. You will enjoy the game even more after reading this book.

2 out of 5 stars It's OK at times, I suppose.......2004-08-19

I agree with the reviewer who said this reduced baseball to a tech manual, removing the passion. I got the impression that Will enjoys baseball because it allows him to feel sophisticated. I enjoy baseball because it's a thinking man's game, but half of that equation is GAME, with competition, passion and celebration for the winners. At best, Will captures some of that passion in his book. But more often than not, it makes it seem more of an engineered factory product.

There are occasions when I really enjoyed the book. I love baseball, and I do love the minutia. It's fun getting behind the scenes to watch Tony LaRussa's coaches work together, and to see the pure hitting mechanics from a master like Gwynn. But I suppose the simplest way to put it is--it's too much of a good thing at times, it becomes mundane, repetitive and boring way too often. I think my baseball education--via the Yankee radio announcers and ESPN to start, and now sites like Hardball Times and Baseball Prospectus--has been sufficient, and a lot more fun than this. Check out any of Halberstam's books, or John Updike's essay about Ted Williams' last game titled "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu," if you want pure literary baseball magic.

One last thing--consider these two baseball titles. "Men at Work" versus "The Boys of Summer." Interesting the different images they bring to mind. I prefer the latter.

5 out of 5 stars Walsh's book is great but not perfect........2007-08-18

I have read five books on prostate cancer. This is the best of them. However, it is somewhat biased in favor of open surgery (as opposed to laparoscopic, and robotically assisted laparoscopic surgery). Also, some of his data are outdated, e.g., on p. 317 he quotes from a Mayo Clinic study without mentioning that the study was based on 1991-1993, i.e., pre-PSA-era, data, when men were diagnosed with more advanced disease than they are today. However, these are minor flaws in an otherwise excellent book.

This is a thorough and helpful reference on Prostate Cancer. It was recommended to us by my husbands urologist after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. It provides through descriptions of the disease and treatment options and recovery process. It was helpful in the making a decision on the type of treatment we would use. We used it as a reference source through out the process of treatment and recovery. Since then we have recomended it to other men facing this diagnosis, and they have found it helpful as well.

Book Description

This is a foundational book for men's ministry in the context of the local church. The honesty and veracity with which these three men map out a successful men's ministry is very encouraging. Its theme is ''building faithful men'' and it targets leaders of men's ministry who can then reach the men of their congregations and neighborhoods for Christ in a very practical and meaningful way.

1 out of 5 stars Scratching my head.......2007-04-19

I have read this book in preparation for beginning a "mens ministry" in our local church. As I read through the book and made comments and marks in the margins, it seems that nearly every page is fraught with problems. There is very little scriptural support for this program, and when scripture is used, it is often misused or pulled out of context. Many outlandish assertions are made without any substantiation. Most of the principles are borrowed from the business and marketing world. I would love the opportunity to give all of the specifics, but suffice it to say, I had questions marks on virtually every page. In this book I see very little resembling biblical Christianity. God's Word tells us the true marks of a man of God and the true purpose of His church. This book does neither.

5 out of 5 stars Great help in revitalizing our Men's Ministry.......2007-04-10

Our church's Men's Ministry was stagnant and in need of revitalization. Our Men's Ministry Leadership Team read the book together and worked through the blbilical, common-sense principles it prescribed. We are on our way to a revitalized and dynamic ministry.

5 out of 5 stars No Man Left Behind - Indispensable Resource........2007-03-12

No Man Left Behind is a valuable resource for those who want to establish or strengthen men's ministry in their churches. What the reader won't find is "ten easy steps to men's ministry". This is because men's ministry is hard and the authors won't let us think otherwise. In a paraphrase of the authors the book is not "prescriptive" but "preceptive".

I found one fundamental jewel amidst the treasure contained here: these things should work for any type of discipleship.

I look forward to using this tool as we put together our own men's ministry.

5 out of 5 stars Best book yet on Men's Ministry!.......2007-02-06

This book hits all levels of Men's ministry. If you are a small or large church this book applies great principles and techniques to utilize while forming your ministry. The practical steps needed are well formulated and provide an easy step by step process for implementation.

I highly recommend this book if you are serious about starting or enhancing a Men's ministry in your church. A true gift to any leadership team. The best book I have every read on the subject!

Book Description

Goodbye, Good Men provides the real story behind the sex scandal currently rocking the Catholic church. Investigative reporter Michael Rose has conducted countless interviews and exhaustive research to uncover several out-of-control seminaries as the root cause of the scandal. While most pundits and critics are calling for liberalization of the Church in the wake of these scandals, Rose presents compelling evidence that liberal influence is the very cause of the crisis. The revelations in Goodbye, Good Men will shock the nation and ignite a firestorm of debate on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Buy a copy for your Bishop!.......2007-01-30

Excellent, true, and scary. Michael S. Rose, now an editor with the brilliant New Oxford Review, conducted over 100 interviews with former candidates for holy orders in magnet dioceses the formerly *exported* priests to other dioceses, such were the surplus of vocations.

So what happened? Yep, the "Spirit of `68"ers got control and New-Age-Sewaged the process of vocations to death. Never mind that those who hunger for strange flesh also got in the game, and the Moonbeam, Fruit-Loop, and Ouiji Board set.

Rose gives an alarming indictment of the vocational process today, and it is no surprise that it offers little inspiration and mounting difficulties.

One tiny quibble I have with Rose's nomenclature: candidates are repeatedly rejected for holding "traditional" Catholic beliefs on abortion, contraception, homosexuality, the primacy of the Pope, transubstantiation, and the Immaculate Conception. Far too often Catholics fall into the trap of ceding their name to the opposition by adding a qualifier such as "traditional." These are "Catholic" beliefs, no modifier, full stop. Other views are properly called "liberal" but are decidedly not Catholic. Calling yourself a "Traditional Catholic" weakens your arguments, and does not strengthen them and Rose falls for the trap a few times.

Rose also offers little for remaining in HOPE. We recall the Priests at Shiloh. We light a candle rather than curse the darkness. And instead of just being Joe-six-pack pew warmer raising a family, Rose's analysis shows that even ordinary layman have to be activists now. Sad.

Sooooooo. Buy a copy for your Bishop. Write your Bishop. Ask for The Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP) priests as missions to your diocese (you may not like the Latin Mass, but believe me, their presence puts whacko Father Flake on watch negative). Rose's book is fine ammunition for returning the Church to winning souls instead of warehousing lapsed catholic hippies in sacerdos clothing.

4 out of 5 stars Sick and scary.......2007-01-07

The author asserts that most American Catholic seminaries are run by homosexuals, radical feminists and heretics who desire to re-shape the priesthood, and thus the Church, in their image. Considering the state of the Church, I believe that Mr. Rose's thesis is correct. Unfortunately, the bishops and even the Vatican, are either unwilling or unable to do anything. Many, if not most of these seminaries need an Inquisitor to run a good old-fashioned auto-de-fe to root out the filth that has been educating and forming our priesthood for the past few decades. But who in authority has the guts to do it?

4 out of 5 stars Ought to be a documentary about this.......2006-06-17

This story isn't told as much as it needs to be. I knew things were bad in some parts of the church, but some of the details here will positively floor you. After years of putting problem-priests and others into the administrative side of the house, this habit resulted in a seminary system that rewards radicalism and false teachers. Examples: a seminary class which taught wiccanism at the request of a student who planned to practice it as a catholic priest; a nun who spoke to others about her "upcoming" ordination as a priest (she and others planned to go through with the idea); a seminary in Maryland so gay it was nicknamed Pink Palace: they used to load up the cars and cruise the gay bars on Friday nights. There are several instances, probably still occuring, where men who wanted to become priests were rejected because they were not gay. Our church cannot afford to have the inmates running the asylum, as this book illustrates was, and perhaps still is, the case in many semenaries.

I could go on, but the story must be read to understand just how bad things got before the scandals were finally revealed in 2002. Even then, the news didn't cover the story in depth, probably out of a fear of appearing "homophobic."

The bright side is that there are some changes, slowly but surely. A documentary version of this book could wake even more people up to how bad its become in the semenaries.

5 out of 5 stars HOMOSEXUAL UNDERCULTURE STILL PRESENT!!.......2006-04-23

Many priests in the "know" have said that this book must be taken with a grain of salt. Unfortunately, they don't know how true Mr. Rose's book is. The previous review mentioned a seminary in Indiana. I happen to know for a fact that this seminary has a homosexual underculture manifested and the rector and vice-rector are indifferent and think nothing of expelling good, holy and orthodox seminarians while advancing the gay culture. Sure, they put on a good act of piety, but they demoralize, rob the dignity and integrity of the good seminarians and push the development of the "evil". Yes, evil is still thriving in our seminaries. I know, I have experienced it. I was a seminarian in this seminary for 2 years.

5 out of 5 stars YES ITS STILL GOING ON!!!.......2006-03-28

I entered seminary last year and believe me, if you aren't part of a clique or kiss up to the formation staff of this seminary in Indiana, then look out for some not very nice surprises during the annual evaluation. This happened to a good, orthodox, holy seminarian (who because he didn't play the political game) was given a bad evaluation and he left the seminary sadly disillusioned and heartbroken. The formation staff never took into consideration the good he did.....untiringly faithful as head sacristan and heading up the teams to deliver wood to the poor on weekends. Yet, there are gay seminarians here...who are deemed ready for ordination who are out visiting priests who they became good friends with while they were here and they are propositioning them. So, yes, good holy men are still being told to tone down their "piety" while the "gay cruising" seminarians advance to the highest heights. Then they wonder why they leave the priesthood after a few years. Its sad, but true.

Book Description

The third in the Sydney photographer's acclaimed best-selling Bondi series of books, "in a market glutted with generic coffee-table tomes of vapid pretty boys, artist Paul Freeman brings a unique point of view to his exemplary collections.., magic combinations that he assembles in his sublime books of photos." (Advocate magazine )

Shot largely on location in sweaty workshops and factory environments, with the focus on the Aussie blue-collar worker, 'Bondi Work' continues, very much to our advantage, Freeman's fascination with capturing what is intrinsic to male beauty. "This book is beautiful. It's so great to see male nudes that are cool and strong and not just pussy." (celebrity photographer Tony Durran)

Following close on the heels of 'Bondi Urban', which portrayed lads of a surf and beach culture, Freeman's choice of models, the way he directs them into sharing intimate moments, his trademark use of dramatic lighting to elevate simple compositions, and his use of color, again infuses this work with a painterly romanticism. "Freeman searches for (and definitely finds!) subjects who are quintessentially masculine men. He uses his fellow countrymen (Australia) to show us the virile attitude of the untamed, knows how to make the partially clothed form even more sensuous than the fully nude form, and creates photographs that are well conceived and executed and presented in a superb format. For those looking for the best of the books of male photography, his deserve a place on top of the list!" ( Grady Harper , review December 2005).

Freeman styles, designs and publishes his own books, and a rapidly growing appreciative audience quickly bought out the first print run of Bondi Urban, while most of the first run of Bondi Work is pre-sold.

All three books in the Bondi series are similar large format, chic, hardbound, color & b/w collectibles, with over 216 pages of photographs reproduced on quality art paper.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pictures!.......2007-05-12

I am familar with Bondi's work, but I felt that this edition was by far his best work to date. Beautiful black and white picture of men set in work situations. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Tasteful, ripe & delicious.......2007-03-09

This expose' on the working Sydney Man pictorial is somewhat explicit, but gives you a general idea of the beauty of the aussie men's natural form in the act of every day working class life. Somewhat cheesy, but, although somewhat extreme forms they represent, it give you a general idea of the Aussie zest for life attitude. These men are examples of perhaps a small perecentage of the Aussie working men, by far, a bit muscle bound for what I have seen, being I have lived there off and on, but these guys are a part of the scene that makes Oz Down Under a unique canvas of the Lust for Life Population that seems to savor physical activity and outdoorsy keep active lifestyle, in place of our American Armchair Couch Potato Society, and they will let you know that....believe me!!

I have all three of Paul Freeman's Sydney Men Collection, and it is tasteful enough for a coffee table display, in a mature setting of course, very well done and although a bit dark and brooding, I am sm sure Mr. Freeman intended to give it the rough hewn and dank enviornment these working men must endure to make it through there rough lives....Oyee Vay, Ei Yi Yi, and OMG! will be your cries at every turn of the page, really!!!

So gawk if you will at perfect buns of steel and rippling chiseled form, these guys are for real, and believe me, those are all most probably sparkling blue eyes that go along with those square jaws and chesire grins.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-01-10

It's everything you could want in a photo book on the male subject: Great lighting, hot guys and LOTS of tasteful frontal nudity. Bruce Weber WHO?

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Resource for Men's Small Faith Groups.......2002-06-28

This resource has been a life-saver for me on several occasions when I've been responsible for facilitating our men's faith sharing group. The authors have designed these topics to make it easy to lead a small group discussion with little advance preparation. A different topic for every week of the year includes scripture references, a short fictional story, and thought-provoking questions to challenge Catholic men in their daily faith walk. Although geared to Catholic men, the topics and lessons apply to Christian men of all denominations. I highly recommend this book for small faith sharing men's groups.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for Catholic Men.......2002-04-25

Our Men of God group meets once a Month in northern New Jersey. This book was an answer to prayer and has openned the hearts and minds of the men involved. The book will lead you through the Bible and Catachisim to prepare your thoughts for the small group talks at the meeting. If you prayerfully use this book and share with the men of your group you will grow closer to the Lord and the Brothers in the meeting. One note, as you share in your groups it becomes apparant men go through the same problems and your not alone.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Focus.......2000-07-17

Signposts is a 52 week workbook based on Bible readings and Catechism. We use it as a guideline for our weekly prayer group discussions, and would highly suggest it for others. It provides an excellent structure for discussion.

Book Description

Contrary to popular belief, we do not have to be perfect to do God's work. Look no further than the twelve disciples whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Jesus chose ordinary men - fisherman, tax collectors, political zealots - and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from utter uselessness. MacArthur draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original twelve disciples for today's modern disciple - you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-26

This is another great read from John MacArthur, one of the soundest biblical teachers of this day and age. In it, John uses the information given us in Scripture to give a full picture of the 12 apostles and personalities. Personally, I found this very enlightening and though I did not identify with just one apostle, I found certain elements of each one within myself. The message of John's book is that God can, and does, use just about any type of person that is willing to humble him/herself before Him. You don't have to be a charismatic orator, a mighty warrior, or a human prodigy to turn the world upside down. Just as God used 12 ordinary men of the first century to topple empires, so He can and will use you! Praise be to the Lord forever!

4 out of 5 stars Seeing the apostles for what they were through God's eyes.......2007-08-06

I enjoyed reading this book. It's a summation of Dr. MacArthur's sermons over the years on the disciples, edited for easy reading. It's divided into four sections, the first consisting of the best known disciples. The second and third concern the lesser known disciples and the last section, Judas the betrayer.

I found the explorations into the lives and character of Peter, John and Andrew to be most inspiring. I learned some things about these men that had escaped me, or were not as vivid, beforehand. I also enjoyed the background on the second group which incudes Philip and Thomas and I agree with MacArthur that Thomas gets short shrift from most Christians, when he is, in fact, no less doubting than any other disciple.

Seeing these men for the human beings they were is most helpful to any Christian or person who is examining the truth of the Gospels. What is fascinating is how MacArthur makes these characters (at least in the first two groups) tangible to us ordinary folk. God chooses the foolish things of this world, and the weak, in order to make clear that He, and He alone, is responsible for what these people accomplish. These lowly fishermen and sinners went on to change the course of civilization and impact all of us even today. They were uneducated, simple people who were used greatly of God. They learned what real love truly is through the life, example and sacrifice of the Christ.

While Dr. MacArthur's writing does evince his Calvinist theology, the scripture he uses is not used out of context or s "proof text". Rather, it is used as the basis for what he believes God is trying to tell us through these men. Jesus DID say, "No one may come to me except the Father draws him" and other hard sayings. The book meanders a bit, through the last section involving the almost anonymous lives of the lesser know disciples, until the last section where Judas' motivations are analyzed, successfully I think.

I didn't learn a whole lot more than I already knew about the twelve, but it's defintely worth reading and studying simply for the points Dr. MacArthur makes about how God works.

5 out of 5 stars great resource and Bible Study.......2007-06-09

After reading this book and using the accompanying workbook I taught a Bible Study on this and WOW...it was well accepted and loved. A unique view of the diverse personalities of each of the disciples, why Jesus chose them and how He molded them into devoted followers.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Study for Men.......2007-03-09

This is by far one of the best books to use in a study with men. The men were given a specific disciple to read about and report on. Every one of the men enjoyed their study that they completed the book before our next meeting. Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Intimacy.......2007-02-03

I love this book! In a wonderful way the author makes the chosen twelve real and human, giving great insight into their weaknesses, strengths and deep love for Jesus Christ.
