5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Ideas.......2007-08-03

I love this book. I was very happy upon receiving this book. There are great many useful ideas for furniture arrangements, color coordination, etc. Very useful for people to use to assist with laying out a room, carrying through decorating ideas, that are simple but very beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for the First Time Decorator.......2007-07-19

Ordered this book for a couple who purchased their first home. They LOVED it and were inspired to decorate (beyond the in-college look) realizing they didn't need to spend $$$ to set up a fantastic looking room.

2 out of 5 stars A Great Catalogue for Gold and partner.......2007-07-17

I personally feel the book is a great catalogue for the furniture manufacturers who wrote the book. Some nice pictures but not of much value to me however, I am very choosy about my design books so others may feel quite differently.

1 out of 5 stars Just like any other decoration book out there.......2007-06-27

I saw an excerpt of this book in a deco magazine I read. It was about the placement of the furniture in the living room, by creating layers of objects. Finally a sound, step-by-step advice with pictures, since I always had trouble implementing in real life all the pretty pictures I saw for years in the magazines I read.

Unfortunately, upon reading the book I discovered that this is the only step-by-step advice in it. All the rest are (again) pretty pictures, in the same contemporary design. I really should not have bought this. If you feel the same, I recomment Easy Decorating Makeovers by BHG.

5 out of 5 stars A book for the decor-impaired.......2007-05-21

I have to tell you how much I like this book. First of all, I am very busy--single mom, working, blah blah. Definitely too busy to decorate and when I do have the time, I don't have a clue how to go about it. My rooms end up looking like a hodge-podge, and not in the cute, shabby-chic kind of way. I had actually called an honest-to-goodness licensed Interior Decorator out of desperation, even though I couldn't afford it.

And then I saw this book. And I canceled the appointment with the decorator lady.

Why should I pay her what I already paid these guys to do? They told me what I needed to know to make my rooms look better. More cohesive, more stylish, and more comfortable. Which is all I wanted.

The book is easy to read with lots of good pictures and common-sense advice for pulling rooms together. Best of all I could use a lot of what I already had.
Good book, great investment!

From the moment he entered medical school in the late 1970s, people around Michael Swango thought he was a little odd. But even though he expounded upon his obsessions with violent death and serial killings to anybody within earshot, almost nobody connected him to the string of deaths among patients under his care. When an investigation finally took place at the Ohio State medical center, hospital administrators sympathized with Swango--against the direct testimony of patients and nurses--and seemed more concerned with how revelations of a murderous doctor might affect their public image than with the safety of their clients. And, remarkably, even after being released from prison in Illinois, where he had been convicted of (nonfatally) poisoning several of his coworkers, Swango was able to obtain positions at hospitals in South Dakota and New York. When American authorities finally started to pursue his case, he fled the country and began plying his trade in Zimbabwe. In June 1998, after being captured during an attempt to reenter the United States, he was sentenced to 42 months in federal prison--on fraud charges related to his employment in New York.

The truly frightening aspect of Blind Eye is not the relentless chain of murders, but the ease with which Swango was able to repeatedly slip through the cracks in the medical system, simply by lying about the nature of his felony conviction. James B. Stewart methodically traces every step of Swango's career, laying out a straightforward narrative with all the suspense of a well-crafted thriller. Although attempts to "explain" Swango's behavior through psychopathology and a historical rise in the incidences of serial killing derail the ending somewhat, Blind Eye is still a must-read for true crime buffs--or anyone who enjoys good journalism. --Ron Hogan

Book Description

Young, blond, handsome Dr. Swango seemed a godsend wherever he was hired to practice medicine. But acclaim would turn to disbelief, dismay, then horror, as the evidence mounted that he could actually be murdering his patients. Then, Dr. Michael Swango would leave that hospital -- only to be rehired at another. Today the FBI believes that Swango may be the most prolific serial killer in American history.

In his brilliant, bestselling Den of Thieves, James Stewart exposed crime on Wall Street in the Roaring Eighties. Now, in Blind Eye, he takes readers into the closed world of America's medical establishment, where doctors repeatedly accept the word of fellow physicians over that of nurses, hospital workers and patients -- even after the horrible truth emerges.

With prodigious investigative reporting, Stewart's mesmerizing account moves from the hospital rooms of the prestigious Ohio State University Hospitals to Illinois, South Dakota, New York and finally to a remote missionary hospital in Zimbabwe. There Stewart tracked down survivors, relatives of victims, shaken hospital workers -- and the evidence that may finally lead Swango to be charged with murder. Stewart brings to riveting life the story of a psychopathic physician and those who protected, trusted, pursued and, in some cases, loved him. There were powerful doctors who allowed Swango to practice even following an incident in which a patient was paralyzed after a nurse saw him inject the patient's I.V. There were hospital officials who failed to collect crucial evidence, making it impossible for a prosecuting attorney to pursue Swango for murder. Another doctor admitted Swango to a medical residency when he knew that Swango had been convicted of poisoning coworkers. Stewart recounts the story of a New York woman who saw Swango inject her husband, after which he lapsed into a coma and died. An attractive, vivacious nurse fell in love with Dr. Swango, became his fiancée, and may have learned too much about him.

Blind Eye shows us the danger we face in a hospital system that too often puts appearances, reputation and potential liability ahead of patients' welfare -- and tells us what needs to be done to stop it. It exposes the alarming failure of a national policy that is supposed to monitor incompetence and misconduct in the medical profession, as well as the weakness of the federal legislation that is intended to protect the public.

Dr. Michael Swango slipped easily through the cracks. Hospital doctors, often strangers when we meet them, are the people who will care for us and our loved ones. If Michael Swango could repeatedly slip through, who else has? James Stewart adds to his reputation as one of the country's most intrepid investigative reporters with this exposure of a dangerous doctor and a failed system.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Black Eye for the Medical Profession.......2007-01-29

This is a fascinating story about how the medical establishment did not detect a psycopath in their midst. Even after detection, they allowed him to continue as a doctor.

Even more upsetting was the failure of the faculty of the college of medicine at Southern Illinois University to detect and fail incompetent students. These students, including Michael Swango, were allowed to continue; even after episodes of total incompetence. If these policies are common at other medical schools, it offers an explanation for the large number of substandard physicians.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-09

Not only was this book a great read, it also displays the significant truth about the world of medicine. This type of behavior (ignoring what's in front of you) happens everyday in medicine. All credentialing personnel should be required to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for anyone who receives medical care.......2006-11-29

I was given "Blind Eye" when I first began working at a physician monitoring program as a clinician. At the time, I was under the impression that because physicians have so much responsibility to "do no harm," they would automatically report themselves or fellow physicians if they believed they were impaired mentally, physically or emotionally. How wrong I was!

"Blind Eye" represents the epitome of how our medical system supports physicians, even when they are dangerous to themselves and others. Through a painstaking and exhaustive review of the life and career of Dr. Michael Swango, James B. Stewart illustrates how easy it was for a medical doctor to manipulate nurses, colleagues, administrators, patients, and even his own family into believing that he was a competent physician. Stewart further demonstrates how the "good old boy" system is alive and well in America, in which doctors look the other way when something seems wrong, even when evidence to the contrary is right in front of them.

If I had not read this book, knowing it is a true story, I probably would not have believed that a physician could truly get away with murder; now I am truly convinced that this is, unfortunatly, the case. "Blind Eye" should be required reading for every person who works with or sees a personal physician.

4 out of 5 stars terrific read....uh, except for............2006-08-29

Stewart's coverage of the l'affaire Swango is exemplary--one of the best true crime reads in the last ten years, this one....except...except for what I've found to be a common occurrence in books of this genre, namely, in this instance, that Michael Swango, not once, not twice, but probably 20 times, is described as "handsome": what's up with that? Swango looks like a cartoon horse, and in no sense of the word "handsome" is he, well, even slightly better than subpar in the looks department. Several b/w pix here document this guy's oversized choppers, narrow head, and so on. So why is this the case? Possibly to lure name actors into vying for the lead in a filming of this, and thus make the project more attractive in order to secure a better deal? That's the only thing I can think of and, as I say, this is a common problem in the true crime genre. SO: it's a five-star read, but docked a notch because, if the author continually overstates a major fact regarding the book's main character's appearance, the reader HAS to wonder, Hey, what other liberties are taken with the truth here? Be that as it may--a tip o' the hat to Stewart for his page-turning prose. Possibly the best book I've ever read about a poisoner, including the great works covering the infamous 19th and early 20th century cases, when poison was much in vogue.

4 out of 5 stars SERIAL KILLER DOCTOR...!!!!.......2006-08-21

THIS BOOK IS A GREAT POWER PACKED STORY OF HOW A SERIAL KILLER DOCTOR COULD GET AWAY WITH HIS MURDERS FOR SO LONG, AND BE COVERED UP BY THE "DOCTORS PROFESSIONAL PROTECT EACH OTHER RULES" AGAIN AND AGAIN. IT IS VERY SCARY HOW U CAN NOT EVEN TRUST A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL WHEN IN THE HOSPITAL. IT CERTAINLY WILL MAKE ME QUESTION ANYTHING I AM GIVEN OR INJECTED WITH NEXT TIME I AM IN THE HOSPITAL. A MUST READ IF U HAVE WONDERED HOW MEDICAL "ACCIDENTS" HAPPEN!!

5 out of 5 stars Best watercolor book for beginners.......2007-05-20

When I decided to take up watercolors I ended up purchasing a library of books - almost twenty - but the best one of them all for a beginner is this book by Jack Reid. He not only takes you through all the technical details of watercolors - materials, washes, techniques but, before confusing the beginner with mixing and using colors, he first ensures that you have a solid understanding of values. The most brilliant colors in the world will not help a picture where the values are wrong or non-existant. Jack Reid starts the student with monochrome landscapes through most of the book until you really understand and can produce an excellent piece of art using only color in all of its tones and values. Then you reproduce the same picture using one, then two, and working up to five colors. By the time he takes you through a full painting - a step that most watercolor books jumped into at the start - you have a much better mastery of your medium, of planning your landscapes, of being able to work wet into dry or wet into wet. By the time I completed his work I was able to go back to some of the earlier books and now successfully complete their exercises. I could concentrate on the best use of color because I clearly understood how to the apply the tones and shades and values of those colors to enhance the picture. This is an outstanding book for beginners and one I highly recommend.Watercolor Basics: Let's Get Started (Watercolor Basics)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars read with some objectivity in its context please!.......2007-10-12

As an evangelical Christian, there gets to be a point where I do not understand the constant criticism leveled at people like Paul Meier who truly want to help people, but are made to look as though we are all part of a holy conspiracy and damn all those who disagree with us, or for that matter that we are all religious salesmen looking to further our own interests. That is not the case here with this book, nor with myself. The spirit of tolerance that so many of us hold to AS CHRISTIANS in respecting others and their differences seems to be lost on those who insist that the spirit of modern tolerance can tolerate everything but intolerance, and of course anyone who is a Christian and writes from a Christian perspective (especially an evangelical one) is "intolerant" or suspect to bad intentions. How about instead when you pick up a book, read it in its OWN context instead of slamming it and the author for not buying into what you already hold to be true--your "world-view" or your "context". What I am basically saying is that if you read the book sleeve, looked at the bios of the author and of Frank Minirth, (and for that matter look at who published this work)--what do you expect when it comes to the direction Paul Meier is going to take when it comes to integrating his theological understanding of God and the human body and mind? Paul Meier seeks to build a relationship between the various aspects of faith, behavior, and physiology that helps explain in a short treatise why people do what they do. As such, he is a Christian, (evangelical--not liberal) and for that matter what he writes is going to reflect that. If you read a work by Sigmund Freud you certainly are going to get a different world-view with different aspects of what he believes is true--his context of what is true to himself will be different, its up to the test of time (and the testing by all of us as students of humanity) to see just exactly who has it more exact or who holds a better understanding of all of us.
I just don't get all the griping and slamming I have read about Dr. Meier here in so many of the reviews, and it is disheartening to see such a low rating for what is a great book when taken in ITS CONTEXT. If you are someone who is basically a dysfunctional mess already--you are not going to like the book unless you are willing to be introspective and try to understand where Dr. Meier is coming from, (he pretty much states this as you read the book--so that's not my personal opinion but his if I am reading this in its true CONTEXT). If you are a person suffering from allowing others to jump all over you, intimidate you, etc--you might like the book if you can accept that the problems we all carry within us are complicated and can't be solved easily (and it bears repeating here that Paul Meier is attempting to state in the vernacular in just a few, readable pages how to begin working on getting ourselves out of our own messes--and away from those who seek to mess us up with their inhospitable attitudes). Overall, Paul Meier does a great job taking a very complex topic (needing a much larger book) and getting it into a readable form that can get you on the right path to becoming more "whole" as a person and less of a jerk or for that matter a doormat.
I have used this book several times in counseling people in my church (Evangelical Presbyterian) and also do a Biblical studies expose/seminar using not only this book but many others from the clinic. I HIGHLY recommend for those trying to help others to obtain the book, (along with others from differing perspectives so to have a fuller picture of what many counselors are doing within their practices)and also I would note that for others looking to get a good background from a CHRISTIAN context/perspective on what makes people tick--this is a good book for that audience too. However, it is not a "ten dollar counselor with binding", nor is it a tell all/fix all for everyone who has problems. Take it for what it gives in its context and you will take a lot from it.

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy.......2007-03-25

The author spends the first third of the book simply classifying jerks into 3 categories - 1st degree, second degree and Nth degree.

When Dr. Meier gets into the core of his advice, he does not give specific advice in dealing with confrontational situations or "jerky" actions. It is more a book on codependency to jerks in relationships - spouses, parents, family members. His method is to find the root cause in your past to why people develop masochistic tendencies, recognize that source and then get better because you have recognized it. He also gives examples of his own jerky behavior and some basic advice on how not to be jerky.

Interspersed throughout the book are constant plugs for his Minerth Meier clinic, and plenty of anecdotal stories from his own life about all of the challenges he has overcome to make him the success he is and to change his own jerky ways.

All in all the title is deceptive. He does not provide any specific techniques for dealing with difficult people.

I would assess the content of the book to be 30% plug for Minerth Meier clinics, 30% biography of Mr. Meier-plugging himself--his successes in both overcoming his challenges and treating people in his clinics, 15% discussion of how not to be a jerk, and 15% discussion that people with masochistic tendencies develop codependent relationships with jerks and the cause for this tendency is the development of self worth in childhood.

1 out of 5 stars Condescending and unhelpful.......2006-11-26

Every two seconds, Meier has to mention the "Minirth-Meier" clinics. Every two seconds, Meier has to talk about himself and his beliefs in God. For a non-Christian, this is a very annoying book to read, as it is positively littered with Bible thumping. I really do respect Christian beliefs, but if you are a non-Christian reading this book, you really do get tired of the repetitiveness of talking about religion. I tried to gloss over all the God and Jesus references and focus on what the book was trying to say, but I only got half-way through. I became very disgusted that I couldn't just read the book without having Meier's religious philosophies shoved in my face all the time. This book is aimed towards Christians. If you aren't one, I really wouldn't bother reading it.

The book makes some good points on masochistic tendencies and defense mechanisms, however. I don't find myself, however, discovering anything that I didn't already know or isn't obvious. As I mentioned, I got halfway through the book and am VERY tired of it. I don't feel he is writing about anything that your average person hasn't already figured out in the course of their lives and that it is just too heavy-handed with the religious stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Diamonds in a Dung Heap.......2006-11-12

I picked up this book to help me through some problems I am having with a roommate. And it did nothing for me.

It contends that 10% of the world is mature adults, and everyone else is a jerk to one degree or another. It is full of made-up words based on the word "jerk".

"Don't" spends the first half in a made-up construction of three types of jerks, that may or may not relate to real life. The only statistics are not based on research of any kind. "Don't" doesn't tell you how to spot when someone is manipulating you, just tells you to spot it for yourself. It doesn't tell you how to stand up to a jerk, just that you should do so. It's got a few good thoughts, but so few and far between that it is not worth the read. You can find better info elsewhere.

What really upset me was having religion shoved down my throat in a text that did not make that agenda clear at all. It begins subtly enough, with a mention or two of the faith of the author. I accept that as part of the sharing process. But as the book went on, more and more of it was about Christianity. The author has every right to write about his flavor of Christianity, about his faith, or whatever he wants. But it did not contribute to the book; it just wasted pages. Finally, the "manifesto" for getting yourself to stop getting jerked around is so religiously oriented that it distracts from any relevant progress for non-Christians.

It's sloppy; the good ideas could have been condensed down to a pamphlet. Instead trees are wasted for chatter about his family in vaguely-relevant ways, senseless repetition, quizzes that go nowhere, stereotyping of non-religious people, and religious indoctrination.

I wish I'd never picked it up.

1 out of 5 stars good idea, but author lacks objectivity.......2006-09-05

This book did start out very readable, however it soon became clear that some traits he considered "jerky" had no basis in harming another person but rather failed to meet up to his personal religious code. He continues on in various worksheets to give "jerk points" for not measuring up as a Christian.

The author also takes pretty much every opportunity to shamelessly plug his personal businesses. It's like watching a movie and having a Pepsi can zoomed in on every few minutes.

I really think it is a good template for a book, if the author could have done it from a neutral and respectful viewpoint religiously speaking (or clearly labelled it as a religious self-help book), and left out the self-promotion.

Book Description

Selling is the second oldest profession, often confused with the first.

The notion of selling carries a lot of baggage. As it has developed, sales has often become a fear-based relationship. Customers are afraid that they will be "sold" a bill of goods, or that a salesperson will talk them into something that doesn't help them succeed.

On the other hand, salespeople fear they won't make the sale. If they "lose" enough sales, they won't make quota, and they won't personally succeed. In their quest to "close the deal," even some of the world's largest, quota-crazed organizations have, at times, developed a reputation for salespeople who are illusive, ignorant, and arrogant.

Buyers don't trust sellers. Because they aren't trusted, sellers have to guess, and often guess wrong. Buyers prove themselves right and create higher hurdles. And so it goes, with neither client nor consultant achieving success.

Helping Clients Succeed™ is fundamental to the success of any business. This program teaches you to become totally client-focused, break down the barriers of dysfunctional business development, and find rewarding, productive business relationships. With honesty, clarity, and authenticity, Mahan Khalsa cuts through the nonsense and focuses on getting results and helping clients succeed.

5 out of 5 stars Service professional's handbook.......2007-09-03

Don't start your own service business without reading this book. Mahan's insights into common consulting problems and how to address them is amazing. This is the second time I have started my own consulting practice and this time, I am armed with much better information on how to sell, bill, and propose jobs. I keep rereading the book so I can absorb all of the great information. It is easy to read and understand.

5 out of 5 stars Good Sales Book.......2007-05-20

"Selling is the second oldest profession, often confused with the first" is the quote on the back of the book. True, many see sales as prostitution, but this book helps show how it is really elevated.

The book has great information on being client focused. The author does not miss anything, and every sales person will benefit from reading this book. I do have to warn the reader that is is a bit like a "text book", and not an easy read. However, it is worth it once you get through the whole thing, you will have a better appreciation for selling correctly.

5 out of 5 stars A Welcome Reference.......2007-04-26

The intention of this review isn't to rehash all the reviews you see before you -- there are many detailed ones below and above that can give you some good details. I am hoping to shed some light on the reason I believe we have some who LOVE this book, and some who found it disappointing.

I will confess that I purchased this book because I had to: my consulting firm (the biggest of the Big 3) made this a required reading. I ordered it from Amazon and read it over the course of four short flights.

I loved this book. There is a lot of good common sense in here that is needs to be shared -- for some it's not news (and hence why maybe it didn't get a high rating from everyone), but unless we incorporate it into our thinking then we will continually be faced with either guessing what the client wants, or business development expenses that simply can't be justified.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone at a manager level or above in professional services. Absolutely.

2 out of 5 stars Academic Sales at best and not for me ..........2007-02-21

I am sure many people love this book but man it is academia at its best if that's what you are looking for. Charts and graphs and decision matrix and everything but something real in my opinion. I see the world a little different than most but after thirty years in corporate America with Fortune 50's this is the last thing they need is more encouragment in the BS - but then that's just me. Obviously with the rating that is out here most dont agree so I'm still swimming upstream. I happen to have just read (see my review) The Best Damn Sales Book Ever and then this and go read it if you want to be a great sales person.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Approach to Sales.......2007-01-16

I was introduced to this book, "Let's Get Real or Let's Not Play", about 5 years ago and it fundamentally changed the way I approach Strategic/Relationship based sales. If your role in your company is more "transactional sales" this book may be overkill. However, if you are looking for a sustainable and transferable methodology for Strategic/Relationship based sales - this book provides a solid platform that should help to enable marketplace success for you and your team.

Book Description

This is the story of a couple's travels on a forty-foot trawler cruising 6300 miles and 145 locks around the eastern part of North America known as America's Great Loop or the Great Circle Cruise. Their nautical ineptitude is evident from the beginning, but pulling from their personal and collective strengths, the authors overcome doubt, a lack of experience, and real and imagined horrors. The odyssey is told the way life hands out its adventures -- sometimes humorously, sometimes tragically, but always memorably. The writing is light and appealing, but there is a serious strain running through the book for those who relish history and descriptions of the landscape. Astute and attentive to detail, they chronicled events and kept an account of expenses, equipment and charting. As a result, the appendix/guidebook is worth the price of the book for anyone interested in planning their cruise. Topics include necessary charts and guidebooks, information on locks, sett! ing an itinerary, resource addresses and websites, details on equipment and the best place to be educated about boating. The book has full-color inserts with black and white photographs interspersed throughout.

I recommend this book for those wanting to buy a boat and cruise the loop. There are very helpful details in the last pages that include dollar budget items vs actual with recommendations on insurance to charts etc. The log story of their trip is funny. Worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Read...Even If You Don't Own a Boat.......2005-01-09

Honey, Let's Get a Boat"
by Ron and Eva Stob

Here is a must read for not only boating enthusiasts but all those who ever imagined themselves pulling up stakes and setting out on a year or more adventure of travel. Ron and Eva Stob do a wonderful job of recounting their year-long journey on a forty-foot trawler, which began in Florida and circled up along the intercoastal waterway to New York and then up the Hudson River to Lakes George and Champlain to the Saint Lawrence River in Canada and on to the Great Lakes and Chicago and then down the river systems to the Gulf of Mexico and back to Florida. This route, known as "America's Great Loop," took them through waterways, locks, scenery, history, and cultures as varied as one could find anywhere.

Even though the book is written in the first person by Ron as the narrator, I can assure you, on the basis of having had the good fortune of meeting this delightful couple, Eva had a big part in helping relate the experiences encountered throughout their year of traveling these waterways. The book is a great read from start to finish and includes an appendix, which is a guidebook to anyone contemplating a similar venture. From the interesting and humorous aspects of just how this couple took the leap of quitting their jobs and finding and purchasing the trawler to their final encounter with the tropical storm Gordon,( becoming Hurricane Gordon,) as they returned to Florida after their year of cruising, the reader will be fascinated by vivid descriptions of places and cultures, as well as the difficulties and near disasters. Ron's "tongue in cheek" satire and humor and his honest self-criticism enhance the imagery of the book and bring alive the characters and places.

The book relates as much about the history and culture of the places visited along the way as it does the process of navigating the waterways. Even though I had been to a number of places mentioned, I was not aware of all the history and cultural aspects the narrator reveals.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in travel, by whatever means, as it is just the thing for the intellectually curious.

This book is published by Raven Cove Publishing of Greenback, Tennessee, and can be ordered at Raven Cove Publishing; P.O. Box 168, Greenback, TN 37742-0168 or phone 865/856-7888. The book is also available through Amazon Books on the Internet. And the authors are available for speaking engagements.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful read.......2003-04-18

There are lots of technical boating books out there and they are easy to find. This book chronicles one couple's own adventure on the "Great Loop" in their first cruiser, a 40' (wow) trawler. I loved the writing style--great humor and sometimes romantic descriptions of the goings on (Mr.'s descriptions of Mrs., their married kids' near "marital conflagration" on deck, the story of the chocolates, cruising with the senior ladies. The descriptions of the travel are very well written. The experiences aboard will be appreciated by addicted boaters and non-boaters alike. This is an adventure story. When I finally retire and head for the Great Loop in my cruiser, I will think often and fondly of the Stob's and this delightful book.

5 out of 5 stars A great book by a great woman. Thanks Adelle Davis!.......2006-06-05

I have been benefitting from this book for the last 20 years. Despite what some doctors say, despite these doctors' ignorance, this woman and her books can do much more for us and our health than a whole lot of doctors, hospitals and the entire pharmaceutical industry.

Adelle Davis teaches us what our body is, how our body functions and what it needs to stay healthy. She was a brilliant woman, a fantastic researcher and we should ALL (doctors included) be thankful that she had the courage to write this FANTASTIC book.

I do not care what some $$$-minded doctors say. I have followed Adelle Davis' advice and I have always had great results, never mind what my problem was. I wish all doctors had the integrity and the courage to read this book, give it a try and accept that they also have a lot to learn from it. Reading this great book one can not only learn a lot but recover from a variety of ailments and illlnesses in a natural, safe way.

I am not going to give any examples (there are too many) on how and how many times I benefitted from following the advice given in this great book. I will only suggest every reader to buy it, read it very carefullly, think about all the author says in her book and find out by themselves.

Why is it that some prefer to call Adelle Davis a quacker? The answer is too obvious: $$$. The pharmaceutical industry and some doctors only want our money; they don't want us healthy. There are too many interests($$$)and patients kept on drugs -even on very dangerous drugs- are much more profitable for the "medical industry".

Back in the late 1960's, a good friend gave me a copy of Let's Have Healthy Children. After absorbing the message that book delivered, I became a truehearted fan of Adele Davis. She showed us so much research had been conducted confirming the need and uses of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrition. Long before the 1990's it was known folic acid is needed during the first few weeks of gestation to prevent spina bifida. Pre-eclampsia is still treated with magnesium sulfate, but to avoid developing that condition, Adele Davis prescribed the supplements an expectant mother needs. How did she know about these? She perused so many documents and researched studies, much of which occurred before the 1930's.
Some have said her writings are outdated and newer research refutes some of her findings, but the broad picture is she opened the public's eyes about nutrition's role. She told us there have been people curious enough to pursue Vitamin A's impact on skin health, cold fish oil and its role in cardiovascular disease, tryptophan, serotonin, lithium, and the B-complex benefitting the central nervous system and the brain.
Adele Davis planted the seeds. Are we wise enough to pick the fruit?

1 out of 5 stars outdated.......2003-04-26

Thirty years ago this book was a 10 star, but during the last 15 years or so (since the author's death) new research has left it totally outdated, and has proven wrong some of her theories. Her treatment of vegetable oils is especially outdated in light of new research. Instead try The Anti-Aging Zone (good for everyone, not just the aging) and books by Dr. Michael Murray, who is the Adelle Davis of this generation (and then some).

2 out of 5 stars Hm.......2007-06-30

Starts off well...then it becomes long...finally, I couldn't wait to finish it. "Do It!: Let's Get Off Our Buts" is not good in motivation. It's mostly rationalization of virtues, life, why, how, etc. That's very tedious for me. Worst of all, the book serves as a quotational book. That's the biggest mistake of the book. It goes like this: sprinkles of quotes in the beginning...then increases....then becomes incredibly excessive...and to the end, it's suffocating me. Superfluous. Chalk this one up as "how to not write a book". The story goes like this in how I happened to read the book: a friend got it as a gift, read one chapter, gave up...sit on a bookshelf for years...another friend got regifted with that book...she read 20 pages and gave up...let it sit in the bookshelf for months...until I spotted it. Unlike the other two, I read the whole book and figured that I don't need it. Why? I did it...that was easy as a pie. But....but...but...did the book serve its purpose for the last two? No...exactly. Exactly...my point. If it didn't work for the two, then the book failed miserably. Of course, two kinds of people in the world: those who don't do it and those who do it. I am in the latter category, and obviously the book is unncessary for me. To think of others needing this book, I suggest them to watch "Rocky", "My Left Foot", "Hoop Dreams", or "The Miracle Worker". If all fails, they are happy anyway (sort of).

4 out of 5 stars People Get Ready!.......2006-06-14

I was fortunate to hear Peter McWilliams speak at an Insight Seminar around the time this book was published (1991). "Do It! Let's Get Off Our Buts" has the same same easy, upbeat style in writing that Peter McWilliams has as a speaker.

This is a gonzo book filled on every right-hand page with juicy quotations. You could easily buy the book at this low price for the quotations alone. It's a fat book that encompasses psychology, philosophy (McWilliams is a student of John-Rogers, founder of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness and many other organizations devoted to peace and spirituality), and practical advice--with lots of humor in the mix.

I liked his coining of the word "selfing"--which means "doing for one's Self, in the larger sense of Self, as if True Self, or 'To thine own self be true.' It means fulfilling the dreams, goals and aspirations inherent within us. It means living our life 'on purpose.'" This term and its definition are, for me, at the heart of the book and what it uniquely has to offer in the bustling world of self-help books.

A friend asked me after my book was published, "How does it feel to be living your dream?" I replied that "Your dream is only as good as you are, so you better get ready." This book is an excellent guide to help you get there and get ready for what comes next.

--Janet Grace Riehl, author "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary"

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Average as Far as Invisible Man (or Child) Adventures Go.......2007-06-17

Bit disappointed in Stine with this effort, compared to other invisible man (boy/girl) adventures this story is pretty mild entertainment and thriller wise. Stine is one of the better Horror/scary story authors out there, I just expected more. It's almost as if the invisibility part of the story is only even there as it is needed to tie the reason for Max, his brother and friends to hang out around the mirror, the chances to have fun with the characters being invisible just isn't explored. We the reader, only have one experience of a character doing anything with the unsuspecting public and that was very mild indeed.

Plus Stine takes the lazy option of food eaten, clothes, hair and everything else turning invisible as well as the human which again misses the reader out on opportunities for funny or interesting situations with the characters, especially since Max (the main character) would have to have been naked to fully be invisible in the same room as girls that go to his school (including one he thinks is cute). The author could have let the reader have a lot of fun with something like that. There are just a lot of areas this story could have gone that it didn't which make it disappointing being such as simple and uneventful storyline and how predictable is the ending as well?

If you don't know what this book is about but the title seems interesting to you, it's the story of Max who just turned 12, who after his birthday party while taking a girl he likes, her friend and his younger brother up to the attic discovers a room (that somehow his parents and everyone else have never noticed before) which has an old large mirror inside. Tugging on the chain to turn on the light he becomes invisible and only reappears when the light is turned off. This impresses the girls but unfortunately one of their mothers has arrived to take them home. Scared but fascinated of the mirror Max warns his brother not to go near it but of course what little brother ever listens. A couple of days later Max invites his best friend as well the girls back to his house and even though after a while being invisible makes them feel really bad, peer pressure keeps them all having shots at beating the record for time being invisible. Max seems to be the only one actually worried about everyone's health. Unfortunately their health isn't the only thing he needs to fear.

R.L. Stine also has another invisibility adventure of a boy who discovers an invisible man living in his house called My Best Friend is Invisible, haven't read that one yet but hopefully he has put a lot more effort into it than this one.

The best reads in the invisibility genre are -
Aimed at children
Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich by Adam Rex
You are Invisible by Susan Saunders (Also has, like this book does, kids in an attic if you're into this)
The Invisible Day by Marthe Jocelyn
Selby's Shemozzle by Duncan Ball

For those up to the older reading level
Memoirs of an Invisible Man by H. F. Saint
Smoke by Donald E. Westlake
The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells

I have created a full Listmania list of invisible man fiction out there which you should be able to find a link to off one of the above books' pages. Hope it helps!

3 out of 5 stars Plot of Visibly Predictable .......2007-01-14

In Let's Get Invisible we meet 12 year old Max and his brother Noah (nicknamed Lefty because he's left handed). Shortly after the story begins Max finds himself up in the attic with his friends April and Erin, as they are looking around, Whitey (the dog) finds a door behind some stuff that they didn't know about. Upon opening the door, the group discovers the room is bare except an old mirror. When Max turns on the light on the mirror to get a better look around the room, his friends suddenly can't see him. Initially he thinks they are just joshing him...he turns off the light and he reappears, he's not sure if he was REALLY invisible or if his friends are pulling his leg. All he knows is that he felt very weird while the light was on.

The idea that he might have been invisible plagues him, so in the middle of the night he goes up to the room and sees if it's REALLY true, does he go invisible when he turns on the light??? His brother catches him in the act and they both go invisible. Max is both scared and excited by this and wants to "get" his friend Zach...what starts out as something that's a bit of fun, quickly turns into a contest with Max, Lefty, April, Erin, and Zach all competing to see who can stay invisible the longest...but as they stay invisible longer and longer, it takes longer and longer for them to come back and something strange seems to be happening...eventually his friends seem a little different, but he can't quite place what's wrong...can YOU!? Read and see if you can figure it out...and find out if Max can save the day...or if he'll wind up being invisible forever!

Overall, not bad...characterizations are adequate for the story, the suspense is good...but I figured out the ending about halfway through the book. Let's Get Invisible is an interesting idea that comes to a predictable end, I give it three stars. The idea is pretty unique, but the presentation and conclusion are pretty standard, this simply isn't one of the better stories in the series, but it does have the signature twist at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Get Invisible.......2006-04-20

Maybe because it's an early volume this is, in my opinion, one of Stine's better books. Later in the series, many stories just got a little too silly.

Max has a dog named Whitey, a left-handed brother nicknamed Lefty and a few friends. Pretty standard kid, average life. Until his birthday party, when boredom prompted the kids to investigate the attic and Whitey found a hidden door. Behind the door is a small room that holds just a mirror - but it's not like any mirror you own! Attached to the top of the mirror is a small light and when it's turned on, the person in front of the mirror becomes invisible. For the kids, it's something different to play around with and it doesn't SEEM dangerous.

The only flaw Max finds is that, after being invisible for a while, he feels lightheaded and it takes longer for him to become visible again when the light is turned off. He's not sure why that is, but he's going to find out - and he's not going to like it. If he's around that long!

Not scary-scary, but a little creepy-scary. Makes you look at mirrors a little differently for a day or so. :-) I have yet to come across a Goosebumps title that refers back to an older story, but I couldn't help but think that Max's grandparents have a story that ought to be told - and I hope Stine tells it someday.

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite Goosebumps story so far!.......2006-04-14

When 12 year old Max and his friends find a mysterious mirror in a room in the attic of his home, they discover a strange and amazing magic that has been lurking in Max's house for a long time.

Max blames the discovery on his dog Whitey, who finds the door in the attic the mirror is hidden behind. With his little brother Noah, nicknamed "Lefty" because of his left handedness, and two guests left over from his birthday party, the nervous April and incredibly cute Erin, Max examines the mirror. To his surprise, a lightswitch attached to the mirror changes everything, making him invisible.

In their curiosity Max and his friends, including Zack who left the party early, discover the mirror in the attic is enchanted with a dark and eerie secret. As they experiment with the mirror, Zack gets the idea that it would be fun to stay invisible longer than anybody else. This leads to a contest and to save face in front of his girlfriend, Max must submit. Things get worse though when Max discovers the terrible consequences for "getting invisible". Not even magic can undo what will happen if he doesn't escape the mystery of the magic mirror.
