This is a good book. It goes straight to the point... good motivational thoughts! However, it is so short (36 half pages) that it seems rather a short essay than a book. I would have wanted to see some more anedoctes and more biography from Michael Jordan's life.

The most amazing thing about this book is it's simplicity. What's new in the book? nothing, but it's the pairing of Jordan, the icon, with simple core value that makes it a wonderful read.
Jordan's message is very simple, follow your heart and will add strong values and you can accomplish any goal in life.

...that there is no secret. Michael Jordan is probably the greatest basketball player of all time, so when such an accomplished man speaks on the achievement of excellence, it is worth the effort to pay attention. In a short 36-page read, Jordan gives advice that resonates far beyond sports, and applies just the same to academic, business and personal areas of life.
Discipline, foresight and sacrifice make up Jordan's own triangle offense against the obstacles one meets on the road to excellence. I was glad to see he made the observation that people in this country only see the end result - the final payoff - completely ignoring the backbreaking work it took to reach that end. You see it everyday - an honest effort done in by a lack of foresight and pie-in-the-sky goals. People want the payoff without putting down the deposit, and as a result a lot of potential is nipped in the bud. Hard work alone does not guarantee, but in the end that is all you can do. Excellence, then, is not a goal, but a process.
Homer wrote 'The Iliad' thousands of years ago, but there is a line within that still holds true today, and particularly here. A young hero there muses that of all qualities in a person - bravery, wisdom, God-given strength - nothing matters so much as heart. Jordan echoes that sentiment - talent alone will not do the trick, and his achievements confirm he was right. Heart measures the gap between the hall-of-famer and the might-have-been.
The Greatest Basketball Player of All-Time Speaks........2005-04-07
I CAN'T ACCEPT NOT TRYING is a small inspiration book written by the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. Jordan had an unbelievable career in the NBA before retiring, tried playing major league baseball, came back to the NBA to lead the Chicago Bulls to a few more championships, then retired again, then came out of retirement again to play for the Washington Wizards--a team he had owned for over a year, before retiring for a third time in 2003. This little book was published just prior to Jordan's first return to basketball after his first "retirement". It was one of many items to fuel the media hype about his return.
There really isn't very much here. The book is only 36 pages long, is divided up into 6 sections, and includes a few posed pictures. The 6 sections are: goals, fears, commitment, teamwork, fundamentals, and leadership. Jordan shares a few personal thoughts and recollections in each section. Though there are one or two nuggets into the mind of Jordan, there isn't anything here that is new, original, or groundbreaking. Still, most people want to be like Mike and it is one of the few things Jordan ever wrote. It makes a nice little gift for Jordan fans, or someone who likes basketball and is getting ready to graduate high school.

This is one of the best motivational books ever written. It is short, yet powerful. Michael Jordan truly is a hero of our time. Although I don't even follow basketball at all, the words he writes are poignant, powerful, inspirational and teaches all of us a lesson on how to live and how to aspire. Great book, for adults and children alike.

Finding the roots of trademarks in heraldry, potter's marks, monograms, and other such ancient devices, this book traces the history of the corporate visual lexicon and produces a taxonomy of the commercial age. An alphabetical section covers motifs from animals to waves, with short definitions and analyses beautifully complemented by daringly cropped and crisply photographed images. Pictures of this quality and interest would steal the show in most volumes, but the text stands up well to the challenge of images that gain force because of the familiarity of their subjects (corporate trademarks), and the unusual sense that the book's context lends to them. Marks of Excellence is a worthwhile exploration at the modern language of ownership.

This book is a great resource for the methods behind some of the most sucessful logos created. Even if you are not a "logo designer" this book is a good reference. The author gets extremely deep into the psychology and methods of successful logos. Although sometimes laborious - it provides great background.

This is a beatifully designed book that is very complete. There are hundreds of examples of good design, and enough text to satisfy those who need detailed explanations. Quite simply, I have seen nearly all the books available on logo design, and this one of the best I have ever seen.
Interesting Art Book.......2001-03-11
I basicly see this book as an art book. Enjoy the design of old and contemporary trademarks and their functions. The text though, is very technical - as in other areas of marketing, the science of trademarks and branding is overacademized for nothing.
A beautifully illustrated look at trademarks.......1997-07-14
Per Mollerup's Marks of Excellence is an interesting and beautifully illustrated look at trademarks. The most interesting part for me are the little anecdotes which occur here and there about particular trademarks. For example the Guinness harp is based on the O'Neill clan harp, when the Irish State was formed in 1922 they had to reverse the harp because Guinness owned the copyright.
The look and feel of the book is similar to any of the Graphis range. The book begins with a brief look at the precursors of trademarks such as heraldry, monograms and brands for animals and goods. It then examines the design process looking at the type of corporate identities that can be created and their application. The bulk of the book though is the taxonomy of trademarks breaking them down into classes, such as birds, botanical, buildings etc.
There is a brief look at the background to the trademark accompanied by the name of company which uses the trademark and the designers behind it.

A great look at Cheng's talents beyond tai chi.......2002-01-05
Master of Five Excellences is a wonderful book for anyone who wishes to learn more about the tai chi master Cheng Man-ch'ing. Cheng has always been an interesting figure to me, for his skill in tai chi, as well as for his skills as an artist and scholar. Hennessy's translation is smooth and easy to read. It gives readers a taste of Cheng's abilities in poetry, painting, calligraphy, tai chi and medicine. The work also includes color prints of some of Cheng's paintings as well as reproductions of his calligraphy. Perhaps most interestingly for me, as someone who has worked to mesh my academic studies with my practice of tai chi, it shows how Cheng incorporated all of his arts into a coherent world view.

Dvoretsky's reputation as a coach's coach is well deserved as he proves book after book, if not student after student, that he is the leading chess trainer in the world. This book, his third in the series, School of Chess Excellence, rumored to be a revised and updated reissue of his acclaimed book on Positional Play, (1996), indeed, follows in his tradition of excellence! Beyond its tutorial content, the exercises in the book are very instructive.
This book bids to improve its reader's positional understanding under the following themes summarized in the first chapter: positional operations conducted by piece placement, pawn play and exchanges; evaluating and prioritizing factors in specific positions; planning the course of play in the short- and long-term; prophylaxis, that is blunting the edge of the opponent's perceived intentions preemptively; typical positions resulting from specific openings; typical game situations including those that invite psychological strategies; the technique of converting an advantage into winning chances; the interplay of positional play with tactics and dynamism; the possession of the initiative and finally, the concrete analysis of positions at critical moments of transformation.
The remainder of the book deals with what Dvoretsky characterizes as "simple positions" that he defines as those in which each player has two or more pieces as the transition from the middlegame to the endgame begins. In this section, the author prescribes sustained attacks, active defense and, above all, warns against indifference in quiet and apparently even positions. He reaffirms Yogi's baseball maxim, "it ain't over till it's over" with exclamatory examples from grandmaster games.
No doubt, the themes of the book are copiously illustrated with quaint examples and mostly complete games at that! About half of the games are his or those of his pupils, Dolmatov and Yusupov, through whom his ideas are tested vicariously over the board. The text is awash with nuggets of chess wisdom, if not his secrets, like, on page 42, he reveals: "Every player has his opening tastes. In closed positions I often chose plans involving the exchange of my `bad' bishop. In the French Defence I liked to play ...b7-b6 and ...Bc8-a6." What's good enough for Dvoretsky is good enough for most of us!
Dvoretsky cannot say too often that one must develop the habit of prophylactic thinking, the hallmark of almost flawless play by its distinguished exponents, one-time world champions Petrosian and Karpov. If conceived and executed correctly, the author assures one that this brainchild of Nimzowitsch will give ones play stability. Any reader who works painstakingly through this book will be rewarded with a lifetime of enlightened chess play. It is far better to do the right thing poorly than to do the wrong thing very well and this book teaches one the right strategic aims to pursue in oft-occurring positions.
Before tackling this gem of a book, a serious positional player is urged to read or reread Nimsowitsch's "My System." A highly-recommended, contemporary complement is John Watson's "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy: Advances Since Nimzowitsch." Israel Gelfer's "Positional Chess Handbook" is directly accessible and stay tuned for Michael Stean's revision of "Simple Chess" that was admirably succinct in the first edition.

Finally, a great planning book!.......2001-05-09
More often than not, we look to business and industry for answers to fire service problems. Most business strategic planning models have limited application to our profession. Mark Wallace has developed a fire department specific model that provides an excellent template in identifying medium and long range strategic planning issues. I have read this text and highly recomment it to the proactive planners of the future.

Great book for advanced players.......2004-06-17
Dvoretsky's book is for advanced players. In order to get maximum benefit one should probably have a rating of at least 2000 FIDE (app. 2100 USCF). At that level basic tactical skills would be in place. However, in order to develop further one must work with more complicated material, basically well-annotated complex tactical games.
This is where Dvoretsky comes in. The book is packed with complex games and analysis of very high quality, with additional observations and succinct advice about decision-making and psychology in tactical situations. In this book chess is a very concrete game - the master-teacher is a firm believer in the power of the specific example more than in overall synthesis or general conclusions.
If you are looking for quick fixes or easily digested "lessons", look elsewhere. However, if you have reached a certain level of play and are willing to put in the work (answering the training questions, doing independent analysis) its instructional value is very high.
I am rated 2200 ICC standard and have gone through about half of the book. In some positions I have managed very well, but in many others I have missed some points or the main point. I know that I am relatively weak tactically so I have to remind myself that rewards will come from the very fact of trying to solve these problems.
In short: a excellent book for hard-working advanced players

When I first looked at this book, I found it hard and a little plodding. Then going through the examples, I found my play improving, and beat two masters in quick chess. This is an outstanding book, perhaps the best I have read, though it requires time and thought.
A Highly Rewarding Study.......2003-01-10
As a player with a growing but still modest chess library, it was only recently that I discovered Dvoretsky's name recurring in the books and reviews of players in-the-know. School of Chess Excellence 2 was my first foray into his writings and I have found it tremendously rewarding, though difficult, to work through. Chief among the book's virtues is its willingness to approach the games of chess legends and relative unknowns with equal respect and equal care, and to strike an excellent balance between analysis and commentary in doing so. Dvoretsky's own games, as well as those of his leading pupils, figure prominently in the work, and contribute a host of insights into the differences between planning and playing, succeeding and failing.
The analysis itself is first-rate. As a player of average talent, I often find tactical analysis comes most easily in positions that are already themselves overtly tactical. By contrast, Dvoretsky excels at revealing the subtlety of tactical thought as it develops through the course of a game. As a result, he routinely shows a culminating tactical shot to be the punctuation mark to a rigorous process of continually seeking out the best move, rather than a stroke of brilliance arriving like a bolt from the blue.
As a stylist, Dvoretsky can tend towards the self-congratulatory from time to time, though this may be as much a result of the difficulties of translation as anything else. For the most part he is likeable and accessible. I agree with previous reviewers that the ideas presented are both difficult and dense, but they should not prevent any player beyond a beginner level from comprehending the book and benefiting greatly from it, provided one is patient. I recommend it.

Practical and complex, this book is a collection of essays, games, puzzles and studies focused on tactical play; especially interesting is how psychology enters into choosing moves. This book is not geared toward beginners, but any dedicated student could benefit if willing to put in the study time.

Beware! this book is very complex and time-consuming- as many endgame books are. I'm sure you'd find that Muller's endgame book offers more examples and is easy to absorb, Dvoretsky takes fewer but much harder postions (not necessarily more worthwhile) and makes you find best line, sometimes only leading to draw so it requires great deal of patience and time. But overall I give it 4.5/5.
