good buy .......2007-06-10
I bought this and h How to Draw Manga Volume 2 Compiling Techniques (How to Draw Manga). But i used This book way more than the other one.
Its got a very nice Creating Characters section and a Expressions one. And creating a Story.
It's an okay book.......2006-04-25
I remember this book well because it was the very first "How To Draw Manga" book that I purchased. IMO I think some things might be a bit confusing because some of the translating wasn't the best. I also wouldn't reccomend this book for kids because some of it was a bit innapropriate. As far as learning goes...it was okay. I'd still reccommend another book to someone that is a total beginner in drawing manga. I know I was able to learn more when I purchased a book that was more strait to the point and had very clear directions.
Great intro .......2006-03-23
Most people will just think that this book will teach you how to draw, in essence it goes further explaining the work putting together the whole Manga. It had my attention from the first moment that I picked it up. This'll let you get a good feel for every section without all the fluff. All that I found out I have to apply it but I'm having a hard time a dedicated manga supply store...... I wish that HTDM would include individual supplies on their website.
Looking for help?.......2005-08-05
Looking for help? Want to go beyond the beginner stage but not ready for tones and the like? Well then this book is perfect! I would reccomend this book for those who are past the beginner stage since the book doesnt go too indepth in certain areas, so it Isnt perfect for nooobs.this book will teach youhow to express emotions, ages, the facial differences between genders and more. it is devided into:
Chap. 1: drawing the face, this chapter is self-explanatory, yet I wish it delved more deeply into its subject, so this was the runt of the chapters when it comes to Quality.
Chap.2 : drawing the body, Quite handy, it goes into Drawing the body as blocks (though personally I like the way I draw my blocks, but to each his/her own), deformation, proportions (shouldnt proportions have been at the front of thr Chapter?), hand and feet (brilliant!!) and more.
Chap. 3: drawing characters, The best section in the book, it shows you how eyes ,clothing and surroundings add to 1st impresssions and the step to creating characters and storys. i can find a few minor complaints, thought the worst was the translation, it could have been better (they mistranslated right to left!)But it is still comprehendable.happy reading
Not much for the price.......2005-07-06
I bought this book from here on Amazon about a year ago. Since then I have rarely used it except for a few times for refrences if Im not able to get online at the time. It has some helpful information but for the price it isnt really worth it since you can find EVERYTHING in that book online for free. The first half of the book just goes through the types of pens and ink you should use and the life of a manga artist etc. Then it finally gets to the good stuff but it barely touches anything before moving to the next subject. And the part I was mostly upset with was the hair section. It shows you how to draw hair flowing and such but thats it. Does not give tips how to draw hair at all. So basically, the only reason you should by this book is if you want to waist money for something you will probably only end up using for quick reffrinces. There are better books out there for that... like an actual Manga comic or something. Or a gallery book from your favorite anime show.
If you want to learn the basics of drawing manga, this book is useless and I can save you money right now. Just visit BakaNeko, PolyKarbon, MangaTutorials websites or Julie Dillons tutorial located on the [...] website. Everything you need is on those sites and all contain more info than this book.
There are some other good How to Draw Manga books out there when you wanna start honing on a certain area but this isnt one of them. Save some money and visit one of the above manga sites or go purchase on of the other How to Draw Manga books that are spicificly for what you wish to get better in.
Book Description
The foundation for drawing manga begins with the artist copying the works of an admired manga artist. The artist learns the traits of the characters' faces and figures while replicating the eyes, the mouth, and other features and recreating the overall images projected. The first chapter of this volume painstakingly explains the artistic development process beginning with copying professional artists' work to the point where the beginning artist is able to produce his or her own original manga. The second chapter covers the basics of a character's face and body, as well as portraying backgrounds. Chapter Three demonstrates how characters from professional manga artists' work are portrayed.

Perfect For Begginer Manga Artist.......2007-03-07
This was my very firt book my daddy bought me and let me tell you, he made a smart decision on buying How To Draw Manga: Ultimate Manga Lessons! This book is great for the basics of Manga.
My personal favorite was the deep detail the author went into when drawing the head. I also liked how the author clearly showed the differences on age of the child, protagonist, younger adult, mother, and an elder.
I would recommend this book to all ages, only one page with minor, let me repeat, MINOR nudity. Overall, this was a pretty great book.
The Good 'n Bad.......2005-11-08
The Good:
Compared to the other How to Draw Manga series, I would say this book was a summary of every book in the series. With multiple artists and varying styles, it offers a beginning artist a definite edge and foundation for drawing manga. Not only does it show a more stylized version of manga, and also shows a more realistic version. This was one of the more useful books for head angles. The heads are a variety of , high, low, and side angles. This is very useful for a beginning artist so that their work doesn't look dull or monotonous.
The Bad:
I somewhat felt a little ripped off when I saw the price for such a small book. Also, it seems as if this book doesn't go deeply into each specific section. It's more of a 'general' help book. For instance, if you want to know more about anatomy, I recommend buying the 'Bodies and Anatomy' book in the How To Draw Manga series. This book is more of a 'overall' book.
In conclusion, I'd recommend buying this book if I was a beginner or intermediate. You can always improve as an artist. Hope you found this helpful.
it's alright.......2005-08-03
okay this is my first review ever so hang in there with me alright? Now I purchesed this book "How to Draw Manga: Ultimate Lessons vol. 1" mainly because I like the other HtDM books and I wanted to see what this had to offer me. When the book came I was expecting it to be as big as the other HtDM books. Boy was I wrong! it was as thick as the others but the hight and with were 'shorter' none the less the content of the book itself prooved to be of some help. The book itself starts off with the begining mini comic or 'manga' if you will then the table of contents, and then the actual material. The first chapter is all about the basics, starting with "practice by starting with copying" then it moves onto how to go and create your own charatures by showing you the basics of drawing (start with a rough general outline of blah blah blah then refine it and add detale blah blah blah). First they start with the head and face the move down to the torso, arms, and legs. In the book they also show examples of expressing emotions, depicting 'cool action poses', a little bit of sceanery, and how to properly hold your drawing tools. IN the book itself it says these are the goals it's trying to teach you:
1) The Basics of Faces
2) Basics of Figures
3) The ABC's of Tools ans Materials
4) Basic Background and Special Effect Techniques
and
5) Producing and Original Draft of Manga
In all it's a pretty helpful book; however it'll do you jack if you don't put it to use.. in other words keep on drawing. The book is only there to help you get ideas on how you may want it to look. It's not going to do it for you, or magically you'll be able to draw "manga" the instant after you read it.
Now I gave it 4 stars because for some reason I felt that it was lacking a little something in it.. other then that it's a great refference book for anyone, not just people who want to draw manga/anime, who wants to improve their drawing technique.
Good Book.......2005-07-15
How to draw Manga: Ultimate Manga Lessons Volume 1 is a good book to start with if you are trying to learn the art of drawing manga. This book covers almost all the basics and helped me alot. It tells you how to use different drawing materials and how to start drawing your own manga. It also showes you the differenses between male and female cheracters. Also as to be acspected in any how to draw manga book there is some mild nudity (but nothing that detailled). So alaround I think this is a very good book to start drawing manga with.-_-
Absoulutely amazing!.......2005-07-03
This is the most amazing drawing book I have ever purchased. This book is extremely helpful, especially towards the end. It shows characters in different poses to help you learn how to draw them. It does suggest in the beginning to copy some of your favorite artists' work. I copied pictures out of my manga books and then tried to do something original, and I have improved greatly! GET THIS BOOK!!
Book Description

A great tool to start you off in the right direction........2007-04-13
I was really surprised when I was actually able to get this book in my hands!!! I waited so many months before I could order this book! Any way, this book is comprised from three different artists', Hikaru Hayashi, (my fav by the way) Takehiko Matsumoto, and Kazuaki Morita. These three artists' teamed up to compile a book with there own renditions of stetching manga. Basically this book is a giant rough sketch book showing you the basic shapes they used to get their art work to look the way it does. This is actually helpful in alot of ways. It is preparing you on how to do this so that you can have a idea on how to draw your own manga masterpieces. Artists' discuss the true nature of manga sketching
All-in all this book rocks! It is the complete how to draw book I know. It is jam packed with hepful drafts to get you on the right track. This book is not for beginners though. I think this book would be suited for those more along the lines of intermediate to advance. This book is a must buy! Add it to your how to draw arsenal now!
Book Description
Big things really do come in small packages! It is no exaggeration to say that today one cannot discuss Japanese manga techniques without touching on figure stylization methods. This book thoroughly explores this topic, starting with the thought process and techniques used to draw the characters known in Japanese as "chibi." Most English-speaking fans call them "superdeformed," or "SD" for short-those oh-so-cute, smaller-than-life characters who are always stealing scenes in such anime favorites as Chobits, Dragonball, and SD Gundam.
Customer Reviews:
Cute and helpful........2005-11-26
This book goes over the basic stuff like how to do the head, the basics of the body, expressions, the difference between a regular manga charater and a chibi(nother word for Super Deformed charater)ect. Then it goes over the details like making fat people, skinny people, how and when to use chibis in comics,so on. It was a great book besides the fact there were a few naked chibis here and there (thats why I gave it four stars) but still worth buying!
~*~Purin~*~
It was very informative, and nicely done..........2005-08-23
There were many different things that they talked about in this book, all regarding the drawing of 'deformed characters'. I found all that I needed to in this book, although there were some things (like some little 'in the nude' drawings) that made me lose some focus...
SD or Chibi Characters are NOT just Kids' Drawings!.......2005-01-27
Many people think chibi (or SD) characters are a kind of an art (i.e. gag) itself or that it’s so easy to draw, there is no such need for a book on this topic. It is, but chibi characters doesn’t necessary have to be used in gag or parody works; real life mangaka do sometimes use chibi characters in their works to liven up the atmosphere, especially when funny or comical parts are involved. Also, there’re many “secrets” which makes for a highly successful (cute or funny) chibi character. It can therefore be said that chibi characters can be considered an essential part of Manga, unless of course, you plan to do an entirely “serious” manga that doesn’t involve any humor or chibi characters.
This is where this book comes in. Wonderfully organized with many details, hints and tips to drawing a successful and lively chibi character, the book is both engaging and enriching from the beginning to the end. The book first explains the characteristics of chibi characters, before moving on to how to draw chibi characters’ eyes, noses, mouths and even ears. The book also touches on the actions, poses and expressions of chibi characters, and also offers you advices on how to make your character even more Q! (or cute!). Apart from the characters, there’re also tips on deforming other things and props such as background, robots, trees, and even cars! Whew!
Not to forget, there is a special bonus at the back of the book where you can mix and match everything in the face to get your own chibi character’s look and at the same time, hone your skill.
Although it’s mentioned here that the reading level is for ages 9-12, I would like to emphasize again, chibi or super deformed characters doesn’t just mean kids’ drawings or drawings for kids, if you ARE serious about manga drawing, chibi characters is one area you’ll need to work on as well. A highly valuable, constructive and entertaining book; I recommend this book to anyone serious in manga drawing! ^^
about time for book like this to came out.......2004-09-28
Many typical Anime character designs feature heads that are just somewhat larger than would be proprotionally correct. is known as Super-deformed characters, SD for short or Chibi in japanese exagerate this deformation in the goal of appearing cute and funny.Artists often Super Deform characters in order to show an extreme change in the characters' mood. the goal of the animators is always comedic cuteness. Often done at the punchline of a joke for an extra comedic oomph. In this book its cover all the basics you need to know about this japanese style what covers in manga.I give it five stars because there no other book i know cover such a area
Pretty Good .......2004-08-11
well This Manga book is not like the other manga books . This kinda like a special editon . Mostly I would recomend it for more avanced Manga Drawers . If you are just a starter I would recommend Geting started. the first book of manga. It really tells you to draw Chibis (really tiny people) . If you are expeting how to draw bodys, and comics or proffional Manga . You don't want get this book . But If you want to learn all about to draw chibis ,(very small or deformed humans) how thier moves , Faces , Eyes ect. But it pretty Good for people who want to draw chibis . Chibis are a different type of Manga . It is not like the drawings in Pokemon , Salior Moon , and Yu-Gi-Oh . Pokemon , Salior Moon , Yu-Gi- Oh are too serious and drama like manga . What this book contains is a manga what is more childesh like and not very serious or dramatic.
Book Description
The foundation to drawing a character is the penciled under-drawing. An under-drawing that has somehow gone astray, once penned, ultimately results in artwork that just will not pull together or lacks balance. This volume explains in thorough detail how to handle the pencil, before the pen ever touches the drawing. Using actual examples of how a well or poorly penciled under-drawing can affect the final work, this book passes along many helpful pointers. Use this book to learn the absolute basics of penciled artwork, manga-style!
Customer Reviews:
A good introduction to the basics of Manga art style ! .......2007-08-15
I Got my copy of this book thru amazon,And was really disapointed because they kept delaying the shipping date and had to wait over 2 weeks until it actually got shipped. However the book it-self offers quite alot of potential for learning to design and draw your own Manga charecters it covers many topics on both the realistic and the manga style such as the design of the eyes/Nose/Mouth , Also it was very helpful when it came to Head drawing from all angles in addition to that it also covers drawing the human figure . The only reason why i gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because all the charecters in the book look like from some 80's anime . And i am not that much into that style i love Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style more it's modern and realistic .
This book is awesome!.......2007-03-17
This book has really helped me figure out how to draw manga step-by-step. I got it for my birthday and I'm always using it. It's got some really great stuff in it, so I would recommend it to anyone who has *some* experience.
It's good, but needs more........2007-02-14
This book had good pictures and examples to help a person draw manga and it's characters, but buy a different book if you are a beginner. This book wasn't very helpful to me, but if you are a good artist already and hope to be reminded to how to draw a few things like the head and body of manga characters, then get this book.
But, I don't really recommend this book because it needs much more pages and helpful pointers.
Super Kawaii book!.......2007-01-04
I knew this book should join the rest of my how to draw arsenal when I first laid my eyes on it! This book is sooo helpful in character drawing, it gives you the run down on different kinds of eyes, hair styles, faces, nose, ears, and the body. Another good thing about this book is that it shows you how the hair should be placed on the head, and how it flows when you are doing a certain action. This book also covers the types of pencils and erasers used for under drawings, and examples of the thickness of each pencil. It also has a small section of kawaii chibi characters! Aww! I would definitely recommend this book for those who want to start off drawing manga. Another plus is that the book doesn't contain any nudity at all. Perfect for those who are offended by nudity.
don't have a clue how to draw manga this is the book you should start with.......2006-02-28
Fantastic, I would say this is the first book anyone interested in drawing manga should buy. I have other manga books, but this one is the best.
Book Description
This volume introduces the essentials for developing a basic knowledge for drawing various guns, accouterments, and the mechanics of combat planes and warships. Not only will this volume become the artist's brave ally, but it is also enjoyable by non-artists simply as reading material and a source of information and knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Details, Good Book.......2005-08-12
I really enjoyed this book. It is great for learning how to draw weapons, not just anime style, but any style. This book really has little to do with anime. But the weapons are great. There are many different angles and bits of information, like how many bullets they use, what country used them and when, etc. My only complaint would be the lack of futuristic weapons. Also, don't expect knives or swords. It's just a book of guns (and some random motorcycles).
Good Reference For Weaponry.......2003-12-24
Like most of the How to Draw Manga series, this is more of a reference guide then a book on how to draw. The cover says Guns and Military, but it's mostly only guns (although it does have about 3 pages dedicated to Russian, Japanese and American police uniforms). It has over 22 different types of guns, and gets very detailed as with the types of bullets the gun uses, who uses them, and how to a person would aim them. You probably shouldn't get this unless you have some experience in drawing, since as I said this is a reference guide and it only shows drawings of what the guns look like, not how to draw them.
The types of guns shown in this book are:
Walther PPK
Parabellum P08
Beretta Cougar
Walther P38
Heckler & Koch P7M13
Beretta M92SB-F
Kalashinikova AK-47
Schmeisser MP40
S&W M29
Glock 17
Wildey .45 Magnum
Nambu Taisho 14
Gyrojet
Makarov
Remington M31 Riot Shotgun
Colt SAA (Single Action Army)
Nambu Type 94
C96/M1916
M1908 Pocket .25
Colt Third Model Dragoon
Webley & Scott MK. VI (IV)
Sten Mark II
Lock Stalk And Barrel.......2003-10-21
This book is really great for anyone wanting to include guns or other military realted tools in their manga or stories. The book is very well done and the pictures are accurate. The author has also included useful information about diffrent types of guns, ammunition, fireing styles, gun modifications used by shooters around the world. The other great thing about it is it is layman friendly, the author goes through alot of information that will help you better understand how guns work and why diffrent modifications and ammunitions are uses for diffrent purposes. Besides guns the book also cover accessories and some military uniforms from diffrent countries. Again I have to comment on the accuracy of the information. I've seen firearm encyclopedias that don't cover as much as they do in this book. It is really work getting.

Kid loves these.......2007-03-26
My artist teen draws from these books, likes this type of art.
Fantastic book.......2004-04-07
This is book is great for beginners, want to learn to draw manga? Then this book should be high (if not on top) of your need-to-buy resources. Trust me its well worth it, vehicles, characters and mecha are great for beginners. You may however need another book for characters as this one keeps it basic but still its worth your money and more!
The author goes into drawing characters, panels in comic books. Furthermore he tells you how to draw mecha and vehicles (meaning spaceships, aircraft and cars. Altough the sections may not be so well depth as in other books it is more complete seeing as the author combined al of these different subject as where other books tend to stick to one subject as mecha or chracter design.
What are you waiting for? Buy it!
How to Draw Manga, American Style!.......2004-03-14
First off: if you're one of those manga "purists" that considers Japanese-produced comics as the only "authentic" works of the genre, you probably won't like Antarctic Press' How to Draw Manga: Super Edition.
This is the first of several volumes, that compiles what was originally a monthly magazine series. Texas-based Antarctic Press (AP) was one of the first exponents of what has come to be called "American Manga," Japanese-style comics produced in the US. This "new" hybrid has been with us in some form for almost two decades now, so a "How to" book on "Amerimanga" such as this one is an idea whose time has come.
What distinguishes this HTDM series from the better-known translations of the Japanese "How to Draw Manga" books (published by Graphic-sha), is that the instruction is given by several of Antarctic's artists, all with years of experience working in the genre: Ben Dunn (the GODFATHER of American Manga--creator of Ninja High School, Warrior Nun Areala, Heaven Sent, just to name a few); Fred Perry (Gold Digger); and Rod Espinoza (Neotopia) among others.
Super Edition Vol. 1 presents the usual "basics" of comic art, particularly character and mechanical design. For example, Dunn gives a lesson on constructing bodies for several types of typical manga characters, while Perry show us how to build basic machines (or mecha) using simple geometric shapes.
The Super Edition has altered the original format of montly issues #1-4, grouping each section by artist. Interestingly enough, each artist covers some of the same topics, but approaches them in their distinctive styles (proving that US manga can be as artistically diverse as--if not more than--its Japanese progenitor). There are tons of examples from actual AP comics, used to demonstrate a particular technique.
My only reservation about Antarctic's HDTM is that there isn't a smoother progression from basic to more advanced concepts. You'll get better use from the book if you think of it as a "toolbox" or "workshop" of techniques.
But you get the first-hand know-how of AP's professionals, not merely theory. If you like this volume, keep in mind that there are three additional books in the series.

Quite a nice book~.......2007-01-14
I think this is quite a good book for beginners who want to learn manga rendering. It teaches some of the basic light and shadow, and tone shading. I find it quite detailed and useful.
Not for Mac users!.......2006-04-07
This may be a great product, but don't by hasty like I was--take a moment to enlarge the cover image and you'll see that it's intended for Windows users only. The plug-ins are for Windows applications, and the individual tone files are also in a Windows format. Bummer. (Still, the book is a nice guide to applying tone to cartoon illustrations.)
Works with Paint Shop Pro.......2005-09-27
I just got this book; the previous reviewers' guidance was a big help on the CD serial number, and the tones plugin is pretty nice (although the tones included with this book tend to be very basic; now I want to buy the other Computones volumes hoping for more special effect tones).
I was taking a bit of a chance when I bought this. I wasn't *totally* sure I could use the plugin because the image was too small to read the fine print in the compatible software box on the cover, so here's what it says: "Compatible Plug-in Modules for Adobe Photoshop 4.0~7.0, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0, Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0~8.0". The gamble paid off for me since I'm a PSP 8 user, but I wanted to post that info in a review so others wouldn't have to gamble. ^_~
One more clarification on the Serial #.......2005-07-01
I ran into the same problem, and went to their website as per previous comment. Basically, you have to leave out the second hyphen (-), but also
!! the letters must be ALL CAPS. !!
Otherwise, when it works, it's actually really nice!
How to get the CD-Rom serial # to work.......2005-06-27
The book looks great and the instructions are very informative. I was really looking forward to using this book until I tried installing the Computones Plug-In for Photoshop CS.
The Computones/Photoshop Plug-In did successfully install but the Serial # located in the front of the book does not unlock the Computones Filter. This makes the lessons in the book completely useless until it is fixed by either Graphic-Sha or CelSys Inc.
Fortunately, I was able to contact Graphic-Sha, the publisher, and they said they have the correct Serial # at:
