5 out of 5 stars More than just drawing..........2007-10-11

I purchased the set of Draw Write Now books (1-8) for our homeschool. They are GREAT! They have great art instruction and hadwriting practice as well as facts and further reading options for the picture that is being drawn. They are an excellent addition to any science or history program or use them for art and hadwriting. My kids (ages 3, 5 and 7) pull these books off of the shelf all of the time!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-03-17

This series is great! My kids absolutely love it. It can bring out the budding artist in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars What a resource!.......2007-01-16

These books have been invaluable in my classroom. However, they can be used in ANY situation to learn how to draw. Easy, non-threatening and FUN!

5 out of 5 stars Drawing helps writing practice more fun.......2006-10-03

These books are great. They have many thematic ties to our curriculum. I made them into centers by copying the book and gluing them to a colorful folder and laminating it. I put those in the writing center whenever we were focusing on a certain theme. A great resource for 1-3.

5 out of 5 stars Improves handwriting and basic drawing skills! A++++.......2006-01-01

This is a wonderful set of books. We are using it as a handwriting practice program (for 1st & 2nd grade) rather than a drawing program, but I'm sure it has applications both ways.

My children typically dread handwriting, but they really enjoy this format - learning to draw something recognizable and then copying the 3-4 informative sentences that are provided. Copying the drawings helps them with following step-by-step directions as well as fine motor control. They are justifiably proud of their sketches and often add other fanciful elements to their drawings.

And they take great care in their writing, even though they have to translate the writing into the D'Nealian format. In their old handwriting sessions, the writing would start neat and quickly deteriorate by the end of the page, but using this program, the writing is beautiful from beginning to end. It is almost as if they want their writing to look nice because they are so proud of their drawings.

We did buy special writing paper (top half of the page is blank for the drawing, and the bottom half has lines for writing) from a local teacher supply store, and I have also seen similar paper at Office Depot, although the qualify of the teacher supply store paper was considerably better.

4 out of 5 stars Helps to learn drawing.......2007-05-07

This book has given my 5 yr old son confidence by helping him to draw simple animals that he thought were too difficult to draw. He has not been as interested in the writing part. It would have been nice if it was like a workbook with blank pages across from each page so he could practice right in there.

5 out of 5 stars This book is Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-24

I homeschool my kids and I bought this book for our art lessons. This is such an easy to follow drawing book. My kids are ages 5,7 & 10. All 3 are finding it easy to follow and their drawings are so good. I like to do the pictures myself. I like how the next step of the drawing is in a different color, it makes it so much easier. My 7 yr old even sat down with the book by herself and drew a picture without any help, and it turned out really nice. Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Wow - how fun is this ?!?!?!.......2005-09-20

Bought this for my 5 YO daughter - it gave her incentive to practice her printing - she wasn't allowed to attemp the drawing part until the writing part was finished.
Basically, each page has three-four sentences for them to copy with a full picture already done above it on the same page. On the next page, the main object of the picture (a pig for example) is drawn with basic shapes in a step-by-step manner - even my older girls love to try to draw them.
I can't wait to get the next book in the series - great idea!!!!

5 out of 5 stars We all love this book!.......2005-08-30

My girls, 8 and 4, love this book. I am amazed at how well their drawings come out. Not only are their drawings fantastic but the older girl utilizes the writing exercises and thinks they are fun - unlike other writing exercises.

I am a homeschooling mother and would recommend this book to anyone with children, homeschool or not. They will love it.

5 out of 5 stars 4 year old daugher loves this book!.......2002-02-27

I bought this book for my 4 year old daugter to help her to draw more than stick people and flowers. She loves it. She gets so excited when she can actually draw a barn, a pig, a horse.... She wants more books. Have fun with it and learn how to draw using simple directions.

4 out of 5 stars An elementary text on basic drawing shapes.......2007-04-12

"Learn to Draw Now"
by D. C. Dubosque

"There's no reason to go through life saying, "I can't draw!"--from the cover of "Learn to Draw Now"

This book would fall into the classification of Drawing-For-The-Absolute-Beginner. I do not want to be unkind to this book, for it is a nice set of lesson materials on working with the basic shapes. Author D. C. DuBosque covers this basic material and covers it well. For example, the author covers elementary perspective so well that any beginner could acquire sound knowledge very quickly.

The book covers elementary lighting and shading with a nice introduction to techniques that work. The books is very affordable and it is a good buy, especially for those who are frustrated and want another book covering the basics.

Another thing to admire about this book is that it avoids using an excess of wordy text. There is brief instruction and good illustration. Author D. C. DuBosque could expand this book I think, into sections that move beyond the elementary. The author's grasp of how to write a book specifically for discouraged beginners is evident.

This book has no instruction concerning figure drawing, but for a concise book of 64 pages it is okay. I think it is just the sort of thing that a parent might want to introduce a child to basic drawing, or that an adult might use for self-teaching; but the student will soon find himself needing still more books.

4 out of 5 stars Learn to sketch.......2000-07-06

This book is somewhat mistitled. Learn to sketch would be better. Very good introduction that will have you sketching the basic shapes and having fun with it. He has cool little rules (he calls them strategies) that he hammers home. He will state a strategy on page 3 and then just when you have forgotten it he will tell you to draw something and use "strategy number 1." You scratch your head then start flipping pages back to see what the rule was. But next time you read a strategy YOU MEMORIZE IT so that you don't have to keep flipping. That is exactly his plan of course. I like this book - give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Where writing really is an art!.......2007-09-11

Anyone who has ever picked up this series knows how great it is for kids! My son was so proud of himself last week when he was able to learn how to draw an elephant for the first time!! He didn't think the rest of the family would believe he had been the artist of the picture now hanging on our fridge. Of course the handwriting review is great, but I use these books as my art curriculum. I appreciate the way they break drawing down into steps (lines and curves) that make sense.

I love these books, and all three of my kids have loved them too. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed Success.......2000-02-22

As a 1st Grade teacher, I have a wide range of reading and handwriting abilities. Keeping them all motivated can be a challenge. I have yet to meet a child, however, who will not jump at the chance to draw. I have the Draw Write Now series and am anxiously awaiting Book 7. No matter what the child's level, they can experience instant success in this program. The step-by-step directions are clear and easily understood. I find that after the writing and drawing, the students are motivated to extend their lesson with other reading and writing experiences, as well as with a variety of art projects.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Art Program.......2007-03-10

3 out of 5 stars O.K. FOR YOUNGER KIDS.......2000-03-31

This book is rated as being for 4 to 8 year olds, but I would narrow that down to being for 4 or 5 year olds who are just learning how to write and draw. Definitely too juvenile for older kids.

This is a special Thank you to the authors of this book. My 6 yr. old daughter and I have tremendesly enjoyed this book together. She is a great artist and loves to read. The drawing lessons both help to improve on her reading ability, while giving her great tools for drawing the beautiful and fun pictures displyed. We are both looking forward to more great "Draw Write Now" books.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must for little ones who love to draw........1998-12-03

My son (eight years old) (very good artist) ate this book up. He copied every page in just three days then he was mixing scenes. His drawings took on a superb quality that he had not reached before. The bonus is, he practices his handwriting while learning interesting facts that are good to know. We'll be buying each edition for Christmas for him.

This book is brightly illustrated and well priced for the high quality. It is a wonderful resourse for parents as well as children. The subject matter covers a broad range of interesting information. Bravo!

    Book Description

Beginning drawing and writing lessons for children ages five to ten. BOOK 3 focuses on Native Americans, North America and the Pilgrims. The books are simple enough for a young child to do independently, but a teacher or parent may present the lessons. Each drawing lesson includes a colorful picture and step-by-step instructions, while the writing lesson includes four simple handwritten sentences. The teacher or parent may introduce letter formation or have the children copy the sentences for handwriting practice, or use the lessons as a springboard for creative writing or report writing. Developed by an elementary school teacher and co-authored by her daughter. A brief list of the 21 lessons in the book includes longhouse, cradleboard, bison, pueblo, sunflower, eagle, windmill, and Plymouth house.

5 out of 5 stars Simple drawing lessons and great handwring practice!.......2000-01-19

My children love these books. The art lessons are very simple. I wish I could send you a copy the horse my 6 year old son drew. I've never drawn a horse so well! This from my son who cries " I don't know how to draw, mom!" You won't be sorry you bought this book. The format is very clear and simple and It shows how good penmanship is an art form. Pages are not cluttered. Extra Ideas spark a young artists creativity. These books are great for reference "Now how did I draw that boat?" Worth every dime.
