I am training to be a nurse anesthetist at a top medical school. I need to have the wits of an advanced practice nurse and the knowledge of a med student. This book is an invaluable resource. It's straightforward, but not "anesthesia for dummies". Comprehensive. Everything I need.

This is now the fourth edition of this textbook that the reviewer has purchased. The first edition was the reviewer's companion during the senior year of medical school and residency training, when the appropriate sections were read whenever encountering patients with one of the discussed diseases. The second edition was the reviewer's most-used texbook during preparation for the anesthesiology oral examination. Most recently, a second copy of this most recent edition was purchased as the required textbook for a resident rotation in preoperative evaluation. This book has a place on the shelf of any anesthesiologist who is preparing for the oral boards or in practice.
The pathologic "horses" are well discussed, which makes this book an excellent starting point for a reasonably bright medical student interested in anesthesiology. A number of "zebras" are also presented, but there is not much detail concerning the "unicorns". The emphasis is a bit heavier on adult diseases than pediatric disease. For the real "unicorns" in adults and children, there are books devoted exclusively to the anesthetic implications of uncommon diseases in general, or genetic diseases in particular.

this book is great for two main reasons:
1) the way my orgo class is set up, the prof teaches pretty much out of the book. so i mean if you don't go to class, that's fine. reason for that? because we use this text, which does a great job of explaining everything. it covers all the models that can help you more easily visualize things in your mind, like orbital-level models when visualizing mechanisms. while some of the earlier chapters, like the one on stereochemistry, can still be a little confusing, the text is overall well-written.
GRADE: A-
2) PROBLEMS: problems are the bread and butter for doing well in orgo. this book provides a lot of problems and equips you to think in the right way in order to do well in any organic class. furthermore, the problems are pretty appropriate; there are none that are too difficult given the material that is actually covered in the textbook. i highly recommend getting the solutions manual for the sole reason of checking answers. if you hope to find a solutions manual that will explain why you did something wrong, you'll be left disappointed as it will only leave you more confused in its attempt to explain how it arrived at the right answer.
The best book for chem majors.......2005-07-21
After one term of having this book, I decided to become
a chemist. It grabbed me really hard and made me realize
the complexity and wonder of chemistry (something I hadn't experienced with freshman chem.) If you are a chemistry major, this is definitely the book you will want to use. If your prof is using a different text, I'd definitely keep a copy of this one to use as a second opinion, at least. It is extremely well-written and it's written at a high level. In other words, it
doesn't just string you along and give you the basics...
it delves deeply into reaction mechanisms and what is
actually happening in each reaction. Product yields for
many reactions are included, and this is quite useful.
The writing style makes you learn a new way of thinking - that of a scientist. At times, the syntax is a little "brainy"
(they refer to acetone by its IUPAC name, "propanone",
for instance, and they refer to ethylene oxide as "oxacyclopropane".) I had an earlier version of this book in class when I took organic many years ago, but the revisions are mostly in presentation and in the problem sets. True, the problems in each chapter are not always good. If your instructor is good, they will provide their own problems to supplement the book's. But my suggestion is to go ahead and just do a web search for old exams and problems given by profs at other schools. Many of these are great and will give you tons of insight. For those who have already graduated, this is a good and up-to-date book to keep with you in your graduate studies or in the lab if you work in such a capacity.
I Love Vollhardt.......2005-06-09
After perusing several other texts at different colleges, I have come to the conclusion that the Vollhardt book is indeed a well done text. Although more examples would have been nice, I feel that the reactions are done in a straightforward manner and the Chemical Highlights provided are fantastically interesting. The Viagra synthesis presented was very helpful in discussing yields of pharmaceutical drugs. Overall, I'd give this book a B+/A-
Straightforward and Clear.......2004-05-03
I used this text for my introductory Organic chem class, and found it both easy to read and helpful. It seems well-organized and has plenty of clear examples and good chapter-end summaries. However, I would highly recommend purchasing the study guide and solutions manual as well. Many of the problems are challenging, and having this resource available is very helpful. However, at the time of this writing, the only version of this study guide available on Amazon is that for the 3rd edition, which is little good for use with the 4th edition textbook, so be sure find the proper study guide for the textbook you purchase.

Finally a book that explains with words!.......2007-04-20
I don't understand what the other reviewers are talking about, I find this book a lifesaver for my Deformable Solids course, because the authors take the time to explain the formulas they put in the book with real words. I appreciate that the formulas are in the text and not coldly thrown at you in a scary cluster, making the concepts much easier to understand thoroughly.
I found the information easy to find and I think the examples are great, with detailed and explained solutions.
Finally a book that cares about "how" and "why" instead of just "what".
Advanced Strength and Applied Elasticity 4th Edition.......2004-02-12
Many Engineering text books lately do not seem to be written well. I feel that this is not the fault of the authors as much as it is the fault of the editor. This book overall is not in my worst text book list, but can be improved very easily. I have given it a 2 star rating, meaning that it still can be improved upon and until it is improved it is a difficult book to follow.
The problems with this book are:
1. Example problems are not included in the text in a sequential order. Instead a concept is introduced and five pages later there is an example problem with that material. The example problems should be there to reinforce the theoretical material. When it is so many pages later it is difficult to know what the example is trying to show.
2. There are too many formulas included in text lines. Formulas should be written in a formula type instead of included within a paragraph. When it is in the paragraph it makes it difficult to follow.
3. Topic names and definitions of concepts should be highlighted so the reader can easily go from one topic to another with a better understanding of the material.
4. As I am reading the text I have made my own illustrations for my own study. I therefore believe that the editor, with an understanding of the material, could have been able to include illustrations.
5. There is a constant reference to formulas written in previous chapters. Just rewrite the formula if it is so important to the understanding of the material. Instead the reader is in a constant state of turning pages. I am glad this book has a good binding.
To the authors: Since I am attending your University, Please do not take my criticism personally. Instead, listen to my fellow students when the review time comes about our course.

First few chapters are well treated but advanced topics are not covered in detail.For example, beams on elastic foundation chapter is not covered extensively.To conclude,anyone interested in advanced mechanics of materials should own it.
Not Practical.......2002-09-04
As an Aerospace Engineer (structures), I found this to be the one book that remains on my shelf. It has valid and accurate ACEDEMIC explanations of structural systems - but it does not lend itself to practical implementation of those methods...and many other books do! If this book is supplementing a curriculum, it will serve its purpose well. However, if you actually plan to use what you've learned - not here.

An elementary comprehensive treatment of applied elasticity.......2000-06-01
This book covers the elementary topic of mechanics of material (stress-strain relations, etc.) and more advanced applied topics (thin plate & shell, energy method, etc.). The elementary topics are well organized and easy to understand, but the more advanced topics are not enough, especially on plate and shell theory.

Great Catalog for options are available.......2006-12-18
I found this book be an excellent summary of equipment capacities. There a several tables showing ranges of equipment based on a particular process variable and pro/con tables to aid in your selection. What is in short supply are anything but basic design equations for equipment. This is also true for an old favorite of mine: "Handbook of Separation Techniques for Chemical Engineers" by Philip A. Schweitzer. This textbook is less current, may be more useful for basic design, though more narrow.
My suggestion is to have Schweitzer and Sinnott's book in the design section of your professional library. Be careful with this book because it is paperback.

This was one of the worst books I've ever read. The characters are all over the place, the plot meanders and Puzo can't decide if it's set in the future or the present. (He invents a futuristic chemical brain scan as a convenient plot device, yet the story is set in present time.)
One particularly irritating facet of this book was that the few women in it are in very minor roles, even the Vice President, and are invariably described in terms of their sex lives.
As for the plot being "parallel" to our current troubles in the Middle East and with terrorism, these problems are nothing new and have been around in various forms for decades. The US isn't known for learning from its mistakes.
This is the only book that I have ever thrown into the trash. I read it on a plane and tossed it into a trash can on my way to the baggage claim. It felt great.
One of Puzzo's finest: Plenty of political and international intrigue. .......2006-12-16
Francis Xavier Kennedy, nephew of the slain JFK/RFK has ascended the presidency due, in no small part, to his family name, his political instincts, and his near-adolescent idealisim.
During Holy Week it seems as if the world is falling apart at the seems. The Pontiff has been assasinated, and FXK's daughter has been kidnapped by Muslim extremists and then executed in cold blood.
FXK devises a response that he feels is commensurate with the crimes committed, and one that is befitting defending the honor of the most powerful nation on earth. There is one little snag; an imperial congress, motivated purely by greed,political opportunism, and a visceral hatred for the CINC,is poised to declare him non compus mentis and have him impeached.
An incident of 9/11 proportions takes place in New York that changes the entire dynamic of this political opportunism/intrigue and FXK adresses an emergency session of a join-session of Congress, and is spared the ignominy of being removed from office. Puzo's prescience here is uncanny; a nation in crisis after a terrorist event, a zealous President/Justice Department eager to preserve the Union, to the point of using draconian measures...it is all there, prophetically so. Eerie.
Puzo spins a yarn like no other. His scenarios/character; development/plots, sub-plots are woven into an exciting, breathtaking tapestry that takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride; the thrill of a lifetime. There are so many twists and turns it is likely to give a less engaged reader the literary equivalent of motion sickness. Dialogue is crisp, sometimes raw, and cynical. The stuff a poltical thriller is made of.
Some have decried this work as being a little contrived, but Puzo has a knack for tying up all of the loose ends and leaving the reader satisfied after he/she has read the novel.

A book only worth reading..........2005-04-13
...if you're in the bathroom with time on your hands! I must admit that I did finish this book and was glad that the ordeal was over. Puzo (like Leon Uris) definitely lost the touch near the end of his career and this book is no exception. In just a few hundred pages, President Kennedy II is shown as a tyrant, a socialist, a reactionary, a humanitarian, a political bumbler, a visionary of USA utopia, a man who would kill a few thousand citizens to save himself from impeachment, a liar who can beat the ultimate lie detector, a dear and loving husband/father, etc....how many characters must one man be? And what's this odd sub-plot of a former-Mormon/Hollywood oddball who on a whim (in less than 10 seconds of consideration when the opportunity presents itself) decides to kill the president of the United States. Once again another character with fourteen different personalities!. Puzo even got his basic facts wrong about the Mormons (he should have stuck with the Catholic Church). I would hate to be washed up on a deserted island and find this book washed up on the shore next to me! I would go crazy reading it again.
A Rather Strange Composition.......2005-03-27
While reading this book I noticed that the protagonist seemed to change between three characters, and the intial protagonist turned to be the antagonist at sometimes, and then changed back to being the protagonist at others. It really served to confuse me. Many of the action scenes in the book were very confusing, not explained well. Some scenes were explained (poorly) and then explained again, without warning, from other points of view. In addition the author tends to make clauses (such as "That we had last night", "Which would make it worse.") as sentences. Call me crazy, but they are not sentences, and when not in dialogue it bothers me to see that repeatedly.
Otherwise, the book held my interest, but it did not impress me whatsoever. Some (read: much) of the plot was predictable, some of it developed before certain facts were reavealed, etc.

Heavy but necessary reading.......2007-03-01
Stephan Leimberg does Trust analysis right in this massive edition. Regardless if you an attorney or not, this is necessary reading for anyone considering setting up a trust. The more you know prior to stepping in the office, the more efficient the decision process is. I use this for Overseas and pre-marital trust research, and find the writing concise, and dead on accurate.
