A Wonderful Life Raft to Write out the Storm.......2005-11-21
I was expecting a lot from this book and was pleasantly surprised to see it meet those expectations.
This book covers many topics that face writers during their writing process/life. It takes you by the hand and walks you through each one as if you have a coach right there with you. It also has 'try this' exercises at the end of each chapter giving you suggestions of how to work through that perticular road block - a very nice bonus to the book.
There were a couple of very minor typos on the first Introduction page, but aside from that it is a very well written and quite useful book and well worth the price of admission.
read it!.......2002-12-13
Excellent, no-nonsense advice. All writers should read this book. Morrell's teachings can save you from losing heart, and your manuscript from losing ground. Not only does the author help writers begin their stories, she shows them the route to finishing it!
Procrastinating writers take heart!.......2002-01-02
If you are a procrastinator when it comes to writing, as I am, Writing Out the Storm will help you get "unstuck". Jessica points the way to many writing paths and gives you a gentle and encouraging push on your way. Loaded with creative and practical ideas!
It's like sitting down with a good friend.......1999-09-03
Writing Out the Storm is funny, smart, and inspirational--like Jessica herself. There's no "authorial distance" here. She's tapping us on the shoulder and saying, "Try This."
An elegant solution to writer's block.......1999-08-14
This book is simple, straightforward, and useful. It reflects care and skill of the author, who has synthesized many years of writing and teaching writing into a book that's slim in size but huge in ideas. Not one word is wasted here--every quote, writing sample, and idea has purpose. A lovely effort and better than 95% of writing how-to books on the market.

Not so sure if I would recommend..........2002-10-01
I ordered this book for my stepdaughter and opened it to find subject matter regarding the pleasures of masturbation and how to shave pubic hair. I would have liked to have known this before purchasing the book. No where does it say that these topics are covered. The book is supposed to be about journaling ideas for young women not lessons on the birds and bees.
Inspiring, but not too informative........2001-11-11
I bought this book awhile back, and it's cute, and it inspired me to get journaling, but honestly, the information is for kids who are just getting into journaling. Tips like "decorate with pictures of you and your friends in your journal" are pretty much already well-known.
Otherwise, Jessica did a good job on letting younger kids know how to get started on a journal.
Totally inspiring for any female who reads it.......1999-10-02
Jessica Wilber is my step-cousin. I am so proud of her for writing this book. I've been keeping a diary on and off for all my life but I'll tell ya I never realized how little feeling I put into it. After reading her book I realize that a journal should reflect it's writer 100% and mine doesn't. Well, I hope it does more that I've been using my cuz's ideas. Good luck on your journaling everyone! Janie
Fantastic book for young girls!.......1999-07-27
This is a perfect way for young girls to learn to start a journal! It gives many ways to get started and to keep going. I would reccommend it to any young inspiring writers, or to those who don't even know it yet. I have given this as a gift to all my young relatives!
A Must Have Book............1999-06-13
This book is great. It's a must have for everyone. This book has inspired me to start writing, too. You should go out and buy it today.

Book Description
A singular life often circles around a singular moment, an occasion when one's life in the world is defined forever and the emotional vocabulary set. For the extraordinary writer James Salter—recipient of the PEN/Faulkner Award—this moment was contained in the fighter planes over Korea where, during his young manhood, he flew more than one hundred missions. The editors have gathered selections and photographs from a journal Salter kept during the Korean War, published here for the first time, and assembled selections from two novels, The Hunters and Cassada, and from the author's celebrated memoir, Burning the Days. As commented in a brief introduction, "It is, as a record of the day-to-day, mission-to-mission life of a young fighter pilot, a remarkable document by any standard. But it provides as well a view into the 'crucible of a writer's beginnings, like pencil studies that precede a painting, in which the essential qualities of the artist's hand are unmistakable.'"

Old Material Beautifully Integratred and Presented........2007-06-10
Having read some for the works from which this book takes much of its content I was prepared to be disappointed; however, Salter has woven the material into a much tighter and stronger work. It's clear that he looked back at the old material with improved writing skills and a more mature handling of the nature of warfare in the early days of the jets.
He captures the isolation of these modern day knights of the air, the randomness of early aerial engagements in the first jet on jet conflict and one which was further complicated by the political restrictions which put the bases on the north side of the Yalu off limits. With the possible exception of the middle-east the Korean war probably marked the last engagement of large numbers of American aircraft in air to air combat over a small area.
Highly recommended, especially for those who who have enjoyed his other works. Deserves a place on the bookshelf between Stranger to The Ground, Night Flight, Tom Wolfe's writings on flight and other literate classics on the challenge and characters in flying.
For those wanting to know more about the why of the Korean air engagements Robert Cornan's "Boyd The Story of a Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Course of War" is most enlightening.
Like Wind, Sand and Stars the book has a very broad appeal that is not limited to pilots. Great gift for someone who appreciates good writing.
A Wonderful Collection.......2005-06-30
This was my introduction to James Salter and it was the book that made me interested in his writing. One of the wonderful aspects about Gods is not simply that it contains Salters wonderful writing, but also that the editors have managed to collect the best pasages from a number of his books. After reading Cassada, Burning the Days and the Hunters, I returned to this volume and found that nearly every one of my favorite passages on flying (achieving competence or learning "equitation" as he puts it at one point) from these books appears in Gods. And a bonus are the excerpts from Salter's jounals as a fighter jock driving F-86s in combat in Korea: these sometimes read like poetry leaving an image that has the feel of a Turner watercolor -- a couple of colorful strokes that still give a strong sense of the energy and paradoxically tranquility of moments flying. Originally in Burning: "I will never see it again or, just this way all that is below. Some joys exist in retrospect, but not this, the serenity, the cities shining in detailed splendor."
A Feeling Of "The Same River Twice".......2005-03-25
Salter is a fine writer and an elegant stylist, with the ability to blend exquisite imagery and brute, violent action effortlessly, so that the reader feels transported into the situation he sets up.
This edition of excerpts from three previous books, however, leaves me with a "Rip Off" feeling. Why not just read the books the two editors have ripped this material out of?
The bonus I guess is the frank Korean War journal which has not been published.
In his declining years Faulkner published a similar book BIG WOODS, composed largely of excerpts from books still in print, given his imprimatur as a volume of hunting stories, and his publishers encouraged Faulkner's audience to think of it as a new book by virtue of its new juxtapositions. Now Salter is getting the Faulkner treatment. So be it, but don't expect all the readers to be happy about paying money once again to a speciality publisher for a lot of stories we heard just a few years back when Salter published BURNING THE DAYS (1997). He's great and all but he's no William Faulkner.
Sun, stars, water and clouds.......2004-10-08
James Salter ranks among the finest writers in America, a stylist of extraordinary skill, and this new book about his F-86 flying experiences in Korea demonstrates his remarkable abilities.
However seeming simple the basic act, writing well is as difficult as flying well, and flows from a lifetime of patient, humble practice and learning. The precision with which Salter puts words together, and the pleasure and satisfaction a reader derives from assimilating those words, transcend the subject matter and move to the sublime. Salter is a master craftsman who works with a deceptive effortlessness that distills essence and emotion into forms that drive directly to the point. Every reader who likes great writing will enjoy this book and will learn from it not just about the subject matter but about the art of literary composition.
In other words, one need not be a pilot to enjoy Salter's work in this new book, assembled from material that is now half a century old. He does not clutter it up with unnecessary technicalities (flying jet fighters is complex). His book SOLO FACES (see my review) shows that he is a writer who can capture the heart of the matter and convey it to the reader's mind with lyrical literary skill.
The production values of this book deserve mention: Shoemaker/Hoard is a relatively small Press who obviously lavish meticulous attention on their work, and it shows.
Why "Sun, stars, water and clouds" as the title of this review? The words are taken from Salter's book, page 121, describing what the ancients claimed are the greatest things to be seen. What better place to see them than from a fighter cockpit?

Becoming a Chef
ASIN: 0442023324 |
Book Description
Filled with memorable quotes and astute insights from America's leading chefs, The Becoming a Chef Journal is a place for you to find inspiration as well as record your own food memories. The authors have designed the book so that it can be written and sketched in every day, or just once in a while.
Customer Reviews:
What a wonderful way to stay creatively inspired.......2000-08-05
If you loved the bood "Becoming a Chef" (and how could you not!), you will love having this journal on hand to record your growth as a culinary artist. Yes, it is primarily a blank book on which to record your thoughts, but it prompts you with pages to write about your food memories, major moments in your professional and creative development, restaurant reviews and experiences, etc. It also has unlined pages for sketching ideas and plating concepts, and the book is filled with honest and inspiring quotes and stories from some of the best known food pros of our time.
I have made it a point to give both books to newly promoted lead cooks and sous chefs, but if I had the money I would give them to all of my cooks. Writing about our dreams and taking a few moments every now and again to let our creativity flow onto a page is a great way to rescue ourselves from burnout. It also is fun to have a way to look back on our growth.

Book Description
Sunscreen alert! Jessica and the Unicorns are headed for the balmy, boy-filled beaches of Hawaii!
From the personal journal of soon-to-be eighth grader Jessica Wakefield:
Okay, you do the math: friends + summer - parents + Hawaii. What does that equal? Aloha? The answer should be obvious.
But it isn't. This Hawaiian vacation is kind of... freaky. And I'm not even sure why. All I know is that my friends aren't who I thought they were... not anymore. Have they changed? Or have I?
Customer Reviews:
Jessica and Unicorns go to Hawaii part 2........2004-09-20
Jessica who is going to be a 8th grader in the fall, and The Unicorns,It is the last Summer of the Unicorns,Kimberly Haver who is going to be in high school in the fall, joins them and Kimberly's 7th grade cousin Marissa. Lila just won't shut up about her new boyfriend,Wiley Upjohn, who Janet Howell[Who was president 2yrs ago] fixes her up with Wiley.Janet and Lila are cousins. The Newest Unicorn is Rachel Grant.
Maturing.......2004-01-25
I have read this book numerous times, and the one thing I have always appreciated about it was that Jessica finally is growing more mature in this book and realizing how she and her friends actually act with their cruelty to others and superficial thinking. The book, along with the diary of Elizabeth, is a great novel to read and to learn from.
A fun, entertaining read!!!.......2003-06-22
Four Words: I love this book! I have read it over and over again numerous times. Anything Hawaii or Sweet Valley Twins interests me, and Jessica was sort of my pre-teen idol. I wanted to be just like her, I wanted to BE her. I know that sounds kind of silly, since she's a fictionial character, but she just sounded so pretty, popular, and perfect. She had the life and the looks that I wanted so bad. Anyway, this book is very good, I like the diary style format. There aren't any "scenes" in this book, so, parents, it's a kid-friendly read. I'm fourteen and I still love this book, even though I was like ten when I first got it. I highly reccommend this book to everyone!
I love Jessica!.......2002-10-06
This is a Terrif' book in which Jess and her Unicorn Club friends take a trip to Hawaii and have to hang around a pain in the asse called Marissa.I wouldn't have been able to stand that girl myself.Another book involving Jess and the Unicorns and a trip to Hawaii is The Unicorns Go Hawaiiaan.Jess'a is very nice in this book.
Jessica is finally maturing!.......2002-07-17
this book is about Jessica and her friends the Unicorns, going on vacation in Hawaii for the summer before eighth-grade starts. But when she and her friends go there, they soon find out that Kimberely, whose a Unicorn, has an annoying, nerdy cousin Marissa.
In this book, I actually feel sorry for Marissa. For the first time in the series, Jessica actually matures and actually is loyal to Marissa. You know, feeling sorry for the Unicorns hating her.
This book is about friendship, life, cute Hawaiian boys, and Jessica finally not being a snot like the other Unicrons. She's not sure if she's changed or her friends. But I won't tell you if she does in this book or her friends. I guess that the answer should be obvious.
While on this trip in Hawaii, Jessica meets this very cute guy named Jason. But he ends up with Marissa in the end. You could probably guess of why the Unicorns loathe Marissa. Because she's annoying, nerdy, and a year younger than them. (Well, most of them.)
I am glad that Miss Jessica Wakefield finally matures. Well, she should. Because since she's a teenager, this is like the time of year to finally grow up and realize about your life.
I'm not even a teenager yet, but I know this teen stuff a little.
So, you should read this book of Jessica. It explains about the changes of Jessica before 8th-grade.
Book Description
Jessica Wakefield always thought Todd Wilkins was cute, but kind of dull--in other words, perfect for Elizabeth. But since Todd moved away to Vermont, he's been writing her letters, and they are anything but dull. At first, Todd just wanted to get the address of A. J. Morgan, Jessica's boyfriend, who was on the SVH basketball team with him. But Todd's letters have slowly become more and more romantic. Now, Todd wants to come for a secret visit to see Jessica. If Elizabeth finds out, she'll be furious. And A. J. will never speak to her again. Should she risk everything for Todd?
Customer Reviews:
Jessica's Secret Romance with Todd.......2005-01-03
Jessica writes in her Diary about her secret romance with Todd, even secret Phone calls and letters. She even secretly Meets him.Elizabeth doesn't know anything about this.Jessica even pretends to be Elizabeth in front of Lila not to make Lila Suspicious. It is from Outcast to I can't remember.
Awesome book!.......2001-08-03
I loved this book! I just bought 2 of Elizabeth's secret diaries today. i recommend this book cause it is very suspenseful and a good book to read.
Best SVH Diary.......1999-11-26
In this one, Jessica turns down a chance at stardom because the movie producer seems more interested in her than her talent. She's too dedicated to her relationship with Sam to risk it all for 15 minutes of fame. Then (as all REAL fans know) Sam dies in a wreck.
It was an Awesome Book!.......1999-11-06
This book is one that will never get dull. I read over and over again and each time, something new stands out. It was just like reading my diary. I could really relate to the character's reactions and problems.
great book.......1999-01-10
i think this was a great book. at first i read elizebeths diary and it was great.i could not put it down.i have about 15 pages left and i think i will finish it right now!!!

Shameless commerical ripoff at the expense of young people........2004-06-19
I love books for children, especially those that can inspire writing, creativity and interactive dialogue. Every young person should have a journal or diary at least once in their life, but this shameless journal ripoff based on Nick Jr. commercialism is nothing but a slick sticker activity book. Extremely juvenile in its approach it does not inspire young people to write about themselves and their world but merely respond to a network television's idols. If you really want to give your young ones an opportunity to enter the delightful world of journaling, seek out the young person's classic by Linda Kranz, "All About Me: A Keepsake Journal for Kids" published by Northland Publishing. This favorite among young people, by Ms. Kranz, now boasts a second "More About Me, Another Keepsake Journal for Kids" which lets your young writer explore their world and themselves even further.
