A culinary student must have.......2007-05-12
I recently had to do a food and wine pairing for class. Considering i'm still in school, I had no idea what to do.After talking to a chef instructor, I decided that this book would benefit me in both school and out in the industry. I mean, it even pairs water. Yeah, this book is definately worth every cent.
Don't Bother Me...I'm choosing a wine.....!.......2007-04-18
The dust on my furniture is thickening, the phone is ringing, my dog wants a walk...Sorry, I am selecting which beverage to serve tomorrow nite with peel-and-eat shrimp...oh, what fun!! Watch out because once you open this book, it will be awhile before you rejoin the world: It's pure facination and empowerment (!) for an avid foodie who has never been quite certain of what wine to serve without groveling at the local wine shop! And it's not just about wine; there are fabulous suggestions for beer, citrus drinks, tea....
There are already excellent reviews (in my opinion) so I don't want to reinvent the wheel by raving on the photos, the organization, the pure depth of information, the perfection of this book. But if you have stopped on this page, you probably also own a dog-eared, raggedy, finger-smudged copy of "Culinary Artistry" (somewhat like mine is?) and suffice to say that while this is a much more beautiful book and may not necessarily be sitting next to your stove (although there are wonderful recipes...)you will probably refer to it as often.
Suggestion: Read the more in-depth reviews, click to order....and purchase those little anti-static dust cloths. I haven't figured out what to do about the dog yet...

Are you curious about what wine to order with your cheesecake? Intimidated by five-hundred page wine list at a top restaurant? Downright scared when the sommelier comes charging toward your table?
Relax. Authors Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page have created a resource that helps even the `average Joe or Jane' understand the principles of wine and food pairing. They take the conventional, canned, old-school advice of "red wine with meat, white wine with fish" to an entirely new level, based on insights learned from their previous books on cuisine, as well as interviews with America's top, cutting-edge sommeliers.
In many ways, the format of What to Drink with What You Eat resembles a substantial wine/food pairing encyclopedia specifically designed to be quickly skimmed before heading off to a restaurant or purchasing wine for a dinner party. For example, let's say you are entertaining clients at a steakhouse, and want to sound intelligent about wine. You know red wine typically goes with red meat, but which red? Old world or new? And what are the virtues of each? By spending just five minutes with this book (and perhaps jotting down some notes) you will be able to help your guests order a Shiraz, Barbaresco, Barolo, or good old Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon based on the elements of the sauce and cut of meat they choose.
In a similar fashion, let's say you want to dazzle your friends and show off your new kitchen with a fabulous dinner party. Spend a few moments with this book and you will be able to pair every element of your menu with an exciting, unusual wine. No need to consult a professional wine expert, as you have this knowledge at your fingertips.
Sommeliers interviewed for this book are mostly young and more free-thinking than sommeliers of years past. They are enthusiastic about wine, regardless of it's an exciting, new world find of exceptional value, or a fine-aged Bordeaux worth hundreds of dollars. As a group, they see their mission as helping you find a good wine to accessorize your meal within your price range. And the individual quotes from sommeliers are what makes this book so fresh and appealing.
For example, Steve Beckta of Beckta Dining & Wine in Ottawa believes that as a sommelier, it is almost more important to match a wine to a person than to match the wine to the food. Curious thought! "The most important part of being a sommelier is not your ability to taste, but your ability to empathize with the person who is in front of you," he explains in the book.
How very true. In one instance, Beckta recalls three `big businessmen' sitting at a table. One wants lamb, one wants halibut, and the other guy wants scallops. They tell him they want the "perfect" wine that matches all three, dissimilar dishes. By carefully listening to the subtext of what they are telling him, Beckta realizes they are after a wine that fits into their comfort zone, not necessarily the best match. To him, that means a "big red" from Australia and as it turns out, the businessmen love it.
Sommelier Alpana Singh, formerly of Everest in Chicago (now with the Lettuce Entertainment Group) agrees that comfort is important. She likes to serve California wines on big holidays like New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day, because people who dine out only a few `special nights' a year want something they can recognize and appreciate.
If you entertain or dine out frequently, What To Drink with What You Eat is a dynamic desktop resource and wine and food pairing primer that will stimulate you to learn more about wine by further reading or classes. If you like oaky Chardonnay, for example, this book will also motivate you to try unoaked Chardonnay wines and realize the difference, especially when paired with food. Yet what works best about this book is the way you can take advantage of the authors' extensive research and with just a few minutes of skimming, come across as a credible wine expert in front of clients, colleagues, family and friends.
Great content, sloppy editing.......2007-04-06
First off, it's very wide ranging and is incredibly easy to use. All of the recommendations in this book have come from top notch chefs and sommeliers, so you know they can be trusted. You'll often find a wealth of options to choose from for different foods due to the democratic group effort behind this. You'll also get more than just wine, which is incredibly refreshing. Some snobs refuse to admit it, but there are some dishes that simply work better with other drinks. They go above simply listing "beer" and will put "lager", "wheat beer", etc., which is nice.
The book uses a system of bold print, capital letters, and asterisks to point out which drinks work particularly well, as well as other options for people who are looking to try something different. It's also nice to see a section afterwards that does the reverse and is listed by drink and then has food suggestions. Sometimes you want to build the meal around a special bottle of wine instead of vice versa. After that comes specific recommendations from some of the well known contributors to the book. It's an almost flawless book. Except....
....the book is very poorly edited and, in at least two cases, factually inaccurate. Jean-Luc Le Du is either misquoted, misinformed, or simply misspoke. The quote: "Where to find great Cabernet Sauvignon: This would be a toss-up between hillside vineyards in California and Pomerol in France." I had to do a double take...Pomerol? For Cab Sauv? Huh?
Not only that, I noticed this statement in two different parts of the book. I'm assuming M. Le Du meant to say Pauillac, as Pomerol is, of course, known for Merlot, which makes up most or all (80-100%, usually) of the wine blend there. Even if there is Cab Sauv in the blend, it's a minimal amount of the wine. I can understand misspeaking and saying Pomerol when you mean Pauillac; it happens. But how this obvious factual error ended up in the final print of the book is beyond me. Anyone that buys a Pomerol expecting a shining example of Cab Sauv will be disappointed (although they may end up with some of the world's best Merlot.)
I've also noticed another factual error concerning the retail price of a certain wine; they mention Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon as a great value wine at $10 a bottle. It actually retails for around $30-$35 a bottle, not $10.
While I have yet to find any other major errors in the text (not that I'm actively searching for them, but maybe I should), I have noticed a couple grammatical blunders; missing punctuation, spelling errors and such. It's disappointing to see easily correctable errors like this mar an otherwise fantastic book. That being said, don't let these gripes deter you from buying this excellent reference source for food and drink pairings. Clean up the grammar and factual errors and this becomes a 5 star book.
Perfect Timing.......2007-03-19
I am soon to open my First restaurant. Being a chef not only did this book help me brush up it even expanded my paring knowledge. I have also used it as a training tool with my employees and recommended it to them. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys food.

I found this book very compelling reading. It was writen quite well and I basically finished it in one sitting. I appreciated Ms. Mullen's treatment of sensitive sexual issues and will be referring some of my counseling patients to this book. Her mature and clever take on a variety of sexual behaviors will be useful to many people who find it difficult to communicate with their partners regarding their sexual wants and needs. Oh, by the way, I learned some interesting new things for myself.
The "best" I've ever read!!!!!.......2004-11-28
I had a great time reading this book. I found it to be very well written. Her style is refreshing and totally cool. I read the whole book in one day. She presents her knowledge in an informative and easy to read format. This book is part jokebook and part girlfriends bonding book and part illustrative textbook all rolled into one. I can't wait for the sequel!

"Come here often?"These lines may work in the movies, but not in real life, and not for the millions of guys too shy to risk their dignity on such flimsy pickup lines. valuable advice to the lovelorn.......2007-02-04
Barry Dutter's book Shy Guide to Dating gives valuable advice to the lovelorn. His common sense, no nonsense approach shows how an introverted guy can date and eventually marry a nice girl. I truly appreciated that the author was formerly a "shy" guy who writes from the perspective of a person who has figured out how to meet girls and now what to share with others. The chapter titled, "Best Places to Meet Girls" was probably the most helpful to me. The author has obviously been to hundreds of bars, nightclubs, discos and through trial and error has developed a system to talk to girls. These techniques can save a shy guide from many lonely and dull nights in a bar.
Dutter's many anecdotes about the dating world were both helpful and motivational. Knowing that a fellow shy guide, armed with some proper strategies, could enter the dating world, certainly embolden me. My only suggestion is that, since the book was published before the Internet explosion, an updated version is needed with the author tackling such issues as email, instant messaging and social networking sites such as friendster, myspace and facebook.
Oh Man. Who Greenlighted this Book? It's Simply Awful........2006-02-09
While the premise is decent enough, the material and suggestions offered by the author are dreadful. Why its a mainstay in the dating section of mega bookstores is a bigger mystery than how the Steelers won the Superbowl.
Hopefully guys realize at this stage in the game that 'pickup lines,' no matter how clever or nuanced, simply don't work. Why? Because while giving you a moment's attention, most are either crude or insulting, forcing a woman to respond in a way drenched in irritation. And compliments come off trite or insincere.
Far better to engage people in social settings with a set routine that conveys all the best qualities about you.
If you're looking for great material to approach women, look elsewhere.
- GiddyupGuy
Entertaining read but not help at all.......2005-12-05
I read this book hoping to learn some things about getting women but come away just as inept. The book is written with humor making it an easy read but the advice is basically useless. I was also a little upset when I noticed the back cover and the very good looking author that adorns it. The guy is an adonis. He must think we're all fools to try to convice us that he's bad with girls. NO WAY! It's a slap in the face. That guy can get women without even opening his mouth because he's that good looking. I don't care how "bad" he thinks he is with girls. He can tell them he likes lunchmeat and they'll be all over him. Basically what I learned is that you get girls by being born with the skill. No amount of teachings will ever help. So I take with me the knowledge of never purchasing another "How To" book about getting girls because now I'll know better. Hope this helps.
All frosting, no cake............2005-11-03
This stuff is for desperate CHUMPS. There is nothing in here about how to get inside a woman's mind and access her deepest emotions, which is how to appeal to a woman. The saying most definitely applies here---if you do what you've always done, you will get what you've always gotten, which is, REJECTED. This book is filled to the rim with what MOST men have always done---look needy and desperate, belt out cheesy lines, and give her every indication that you are JUST LIKE ALL THE REST OF THEM.
Don't even bother with this one. You will NOT find anything of even miniscule value in this jokebook.
OH MY GOD I can't believe it got published........2005-03-07
I don't even know where to begin to describe how worthless this boook is.
It's mainly a bunch of trite dribble that leaves you going "Well, duh!" I mean, this author comes across with this attitude that he has all these dating secrets figured out and he's this enlightened dating master when the fact is that this is very basic stuff that anyone with even minimal social skills has already figured out a long time ago. And if your social skills are so bad that you actually benefit from any of the advice in this book, you can pretty much forget about dating women. Well, forget about dating attractive ones, anyway.
This author writes things that are either already widely-known, worthless, or both, then has the audacity to actually go "There, now you know blah blah whatever it was." What a loser!!
Examples: this guy actually advises you to use the old "Mistaken Identity Ploy", in which you start a conversation with a girl by acting like you recognize her from somewhere. Come on!! Sure, it could work, but that's not the point. The point is I already knew that one!! Everybody does!! If you're selling a book on something, put some original material in it!!
This guy also recommends walking up behind a girl and tapping her on the shoulder. He says it sends a clear message that she's the one you're interested in. Is he serious? I can't think of anything more rude than being tapped on the shoulder, and I've seen idiots in nightclubs do it. EVERY time, the girl turns around, looks at him, realizes she's just been touched by someone she doesn't know, turns back around, and ignores him. You can bet that nothing that guy does for the rest of the night is going to get that girl talking to him.
As a bouncer, I cannot count the times I've been approached by pretty girls and asked to grab some moron by the scruff of the neck and throw him out of the club for doing most of the useless, extremely unadvisable crap in this worthless book. I don't often return books, but this one's going RIGHT back to the store RIGHT NOW.
Book Description
A new 21st century individualism is overtaking “corporation-as-king” capitalism, transforming the way we work and live. Today, real power rests in the hands of creative individuals like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, and Steven Spielberg, who are changing the world one great idea at a time. In THE 80/20 INDIVIDUAL, Richard Koch reveals the secret of their success: they discovered what they do better than anyone else and rode it for all its worth.
In this inspiring sequel to his classic bestseller THE 80/20 PRINCIPLE, Koch shows how to maximize success in your career and life by using the proven principle that 80 percent of changes in the world result from the most powerful 20 percent of actions and ideas. He’ll show how to use your own powerful “20 percent spike” – your most creative ideas and unique skills – to measure the amount of value you bring to your employer, clients or customers. For most people, there is a huge disparity between their intrinsic value and the compensation they receive for their efforts. THE 80/20 INDIVIDUAL shows how to narrow that gap.
Drawing from his own success as an entrepreneur, as well as from the stories of scores of companies and individuals who have flourished as a result of an 80/20 mind-set, Koch offers a step-by-step method to remodeling a career or existing business, or creating a new one – one that most benefits you. He provides valuable insights on finding 80/20 partners, hiring 80/20 employees, and running an 80/20 business.
By building a team that supports your efforts and excels in areas where you lack experience or knowledge, you’ll be able to focus your time and energy on your strengths. Productivity and profits will soar because you’ll be doing what you do best and enjoy the most. By using the 80/20 strategies outlined in the book, you can take control of your career and financial future.

immersive.......2006-01-11
Once in awhile when I feel there are a lot of things pulling at me all at once, I will read this book to guide me/ give me ideas to sort out all the pulls. Highly recommended for those who find works in the connected world expect us to attend to all details and requests immediately but we know that are not the right deals for us.
Stand-alone, the 80/20 Individual needs not a predecessor.......2005-04-12
After reading the 80/20 Individual without reading Koch's first book, I can say it is well worth the read on its own. The initial chapters of the book seemed like an autobiography to me and, frightfully, I almost put it down. But the author jumps off this base of case studies and solid historical references (besides being a hugely successful entrepreneur/consultant, Koch has also a history degree in his pocket), head-first into solid, practical content. I loved the no-nonsense language. The author takes the natural selection process of business life at face-value, even referring to the value-creating knowledge from a century of capitalism as "business genes." And without spoiling the story, I would summarize the idea as this: Take the absolute best of yourself, consumate your talents with the absolute best business genes you can seduce, and leverage the combination with a business structure that places you in the direct path of credit for the results. True to the buyline on the cover, this book "shows you how".
The 80/20 Individual .......2004-11-15
This book was good but I enjoyed the previous book The 80/20 Principle more. My reason for that is that much of what was covered in the 80/20 Individual was just a regurgitation of the 80/20 Principle.
Insightful!.......2004-06-12
Author Richard Koch contends that individual initiative is responsible for most progress, given that 20% of entrepreneurs or innovators are responsible for 80% of results and new ideas. Koch focuses on how to be a successful entrepreneur by working with a small team of supporters. He discusses the importance of good ideas, great colleagues, a powerful value proposition, good partners and, of course, ample capital. He suggests a trend toward a new breed of corporations based on individualism, though Bill Gates and Warren Buffett alone do not necessarily make a trend. While Koch writes in a breezy, engaging style, the 80/20 mantra becomes generalized and repetitious. It's a popular expression, but does it always apply? The other chapters are more solid, though they restate known entrepreneurial principles and techniques, dressed in 80/20 lingo. As such, we suggest, they may be a good introduction for the new entrepreneur, if not for the rugged individual who has already mastered the percentages.

Not for people with too much education or life experience.......2007-08-19
The tests in this book would probably work best for someone at the early college level. I say this because as an adult with a degree behind me, and years of work/life experience, I took all the tests . . . and found that I scored extremely high in every area. How does this help me? It doesn't. I believe the high scores are a result of life experience - I knew the answers - not because I am gifted in every area, but simply because I have lived long enough to learn the answers. So, in order for this test to measure a person's aptitude, they need to NOT have too much life experience. The only area in which a person may get acurate results even as an older adult is in Logic. Those questions did seem to test the way you think - can you think abstractly? That is an area that may be more difficult to "learn" - most of us are either abstract or concrete thinkers by nature.
Where do your Career Interests Lie?.......2007-08-10
If you feel like taking some assessment tests, to determine what career path is right for you, then you might enjoy this book, "Discover What Your Best At". This large paperback book was originally published in 1982, and it was then updated in 1990, and again in 1998. This book could be a useful tool for someone who is approaching the age where they need to choose a career, but are still undecided. It can also be helpful to those who have been established in the workforce for a long time, but feel that they are not properly utilizing their talents.
This is comprised of questionnaires and self- tests designed to help identify your personal skill set.I found the tests to be fairly easy overall, but I admit that there were a few questions that did require a lot more thinking through than others. The results of my tests didn't surprise me at all, and neither did the lists of recommended career occupations. Before I even took the tests, I predicted that the order I would score, from highest to lowest, would be Business, Clerical, Logic, Numeric, Social, and then Mechanical. My actual finish was Clerical, Business, Numeric, Logic, Social, and Mechanical.
This is not a book that gives advice and counseling to the interested party. It's just a book of self- tests, and a list of the occupations that match the results. The author doesn't really go into great detail about the selection of a career. This book is really meant as a starting point. Once you have an idea about the different career options that are compatible to your skill level, you can then conduct more research on those careers and decide if they are really best for you.
Overall, this is a decent book, and I think it will be most valuable to high school graduates who are curious about their own skills and aptitudes. For established workers, it probably won't tell you anything that you don't already know about yourself. Because of this, I can only rate this an average book overall.
helpful.......2007-08-01
This book is great for help in determing where your strengths are. A good book for anyone looking for a career path or vocation. The tests were very thorough.
DON'T Discover What You're Best at!.......2007-05-24
This book just gives you the standard little logic tests and addition problems and so on, minor skill tests. If you have any experience at all, you already know how to do most of these things--or you need to finish high school. I can do those things, because I have had to, not because I am 'best' at them. This book was absolutely no help to me.
Reveal what you can do.......2007-04-18
I worked with this book along with "Do What You Are" by Paul D. Tieger, Barbara Barron-Tieger, and fortunately found out a clear career direction.
This book is to test your aptitudes, i.e. the inner abilities to finish task. There are six types of aptitudes: business, clerical, logical, mechanical, numerical and social. After running a profound test you'll see how you score on each category. And each of the comprehensive careers listed requires specific kinds of aptitudes(either one, two, or three), so you'll know what you're able to do. And those not-easy-to-guess-what-it-means questions make the scores result not from personal preferences but the underlying inner capability. (Unlike some other tests it doesn't let your interests interfere with the decision-making)
But after finding out the proper careers you've got to do the research because this book only gives an outlined information about each one.
Since this book is only about capable careers, options are wide. So I also used "Do What You Are" to figure out what sorts of careers fit the type of functioning of my brain. Combined with aptitudes and personality type I narrowed the focus and essence of the suitable career turned out to be very close to what I felt like doing when I was a kid according to my mom. I now know where should I head to.
I recommend it!

A blessing, a gift, a life-changing experience!.......2003-12-18
This book is a life-changing and life-enhancing source of how to use your God-given gifts...a lesson in God's love for us.
God believes each of us is special and this book shows the reader how to uncover (or re-discover) the gifts God has given that make each of us unique. And useful to God!
It is a blessing and a gift!
A personal mission from a spiritual perspective..........2002-04-20
The LifeKeys program is designed to help people discover their path in life. Whether you are just starting out, in a job you don't really like, newly retired, or just curious about the possibilities, LifeKeys is a great resource for finding out more about yourself and your mission in life.
The authors provide a series of simple tests on interests, spiritual gifts, personality type, values and passions to help the reader discern what God is calling them to. Each activity is simple, although they can be time consuming if done properly.
Many people use this series in a church class: The one I led at our congregation of about 500 members attracted over 30 people to participate. There is a hunger out there for the kind of guidance LifeKeys provides. It is certainly a great program to use in a church context, and the workbook version makes it easy.
LifeKeys certainly is pitched to the Christian community. However, an individual reading the entire text would find it just as easy and rewarding to do on their own.
Develop your own personal mission statement, and use LifeKeys as a guide!
Great resource for groups of soul-searchers!.......2002-04-20
LifeKeys does a relevant and wonderful job of guiding those in search of a clear path in life. Through a series of simple but deep and though provoking tests, LifeKeys sets out to help the reader discover who they are and what God is calling them to do. The tests include interests, values, spiritual gifts and personality type, as well as guidance on integrating the gathered information to write a life mission statement.
There is a hunger for books like these in our society... in our church of about 500 members, over 30 people signed up for the LifeKeys class which I led. The discussion was wonderful, and students left satisfied with their experience.
The only drawback to this workbook: If you are using it to lead a class, plan on spending time reading the whole book before you begin, and more time on class planning. For the individual, simply the "LifeKeys" text is more than sufficient... it has all the materials included in this book. But for a group who doesn't want to make the larger investment in many texts, the workbook is a great resource!
Lifekeys.......2002-03-20
I took the Lifekeys program through my church and found it very refreshing. I've done Meyers-Briggs before and a few other work-related programs, but this added the spiritual dimension of what's really important to me. When work, personality, and spirituality are all combined, one has a stronger sense of who they are and how they can best find purpose. This was a very rewarding program and the book/work book helped tie it all together.
Excellent guide for career, volunteer and life choices.......2000-05-16
LifeKeys guides readers in discovering who they are and how they can find fulfillment in life. The information gained can be applied to any life choices, including career, volunteer and relationship. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about themselves or going through a period of change in their lives.

Finally -- a business book with a heart.......1999-11-02
Rarely have I been moved by reading a "business" book -- until now. This book touched me -- explaining in logical detail why it is important to align our head, hands, and heart in our business endeavors, as in all areas of our lives. Businesses who follow these guidelines will be successful -- both financially and with an abundance of happy, motivated, enthusiastic employees. Written in story format, this book is a quick read with a marvelous lesson for anyone involved in any kind of business. Individuals can also apply the lessons to their daily lives to increase their personal sense of fulfillment and happiness. I'm sending a copy of this book to the CEO of the company I used to work for! The book's message is wonderful -- and very motivational.
An outstanding book that clarifies many important issues!.......1998-03-31
So many organizations today are trying to do "more with less" and are trying to be "all things to all Customers." This book provides insight into why you cannot experience long-term success without being On-Purpose. I wish Corporate American, from the top-down, would use this book as a strategic "blue print!"

Valuable tool for everyone!.......2006-02-01
Genre: Self Help/business
Title: Don't Waste your Talent - The 8 Critical Steps to Discovering What You Do Best
AUTHOR: Bob McDonald, PH.D. and Don E. Hutcheson
This book is about identifying and using your talents. It is about The Highlands Program and The Highlands Personal Vision Factors-the structure and process we developed because we believe that people deserve to be on higher ground in their lives and careers.
From Introduction.
Do you want to use all of your potential in your career and your life? Do you feel that you are in a dead end job with nowhere to go? Does your work make you happy or unfulfilled? If you have asked yourself any of these questions, this is the book for you.
The first three chapters deal with The Lemming Conspiracy, the Stress Cycle/Balance Cycle and career/life expanding development over your entire lifespan from age 17-85+. The book discusses natural "Turning Points" that all of us experience. It teaches that with the use of the Personal Vision Factors to compose and begin your own Personal Vision or holistic map, you too can live life to the fullest.
Filled with actual true-life examples, readers move from chapter to chapter in a concise and methodical way, which enriches the experience. Turning points are discussed in depth, next we learn to identify our "hard wired" talents and assets, chapter 5 brings skills, personality and interests into the equation and finally values and goals. From here we learn about systems that have affected our lives such as the "Family of Origin" system, and the "Office System", etc and then how to create personal boundaries. After each chapter there is a Thought Experiment, which helps the reader move through the various stages. All that is required is a 50- page notebook and a lot of honesty and soul searching.
Well presented, easy to follow and comprehensive this reviewer was fascinated with the entire process of preparing the Personal Vision. An excellent tool for employees, corporations, students and even retirees, this book offers us a chance to change our world and how we live our lives for the better. Parents would be advised to give a copy to their children in order to help them make future choices.
Readers can order the Highlands Ability Battery from the author's website which works hand in hand with the book. Authors Bob McDonald, Don Hutcheson and second edition contributions by Lazar Emanuel and Thomas Tavantzis have produced an insightful and valuable tool for everyone regardless of age or career status.

Discover your abilities, use your talents.......2001-10-12
This book is for people serious about gaining more self-awareness of their own abilities. I say that because there are lots of principles and ideas shared in this book, but one of the most valuable parts of it are the thought experiments in every chapter which guide you toward personal application of the principles. When you buy this book, get a notebook or journal to go along with it. That will greatly increase the value of the concepts.
The authors have crafted what they call the Personal Vision Process, made up of eight components: your natural talents and abilities, skills and life experience, interests, personality, values, goals, family history, and your stage of life development. It is a very comprehensive model and draws on solid work in developmental psychology.
I think the previous review was off-base that called into question the authors' work. It's clear they have done their homework, and if you're looking for career direction, don't you want a guide that is fairly optimistic and supportive?
The authors have developed a CD called the Highlands Ability Battery that profiles your own ability pattern. I purchased this separately and completed the process. It was very helpful to do this with a trained consultant. The book has a self-assessment in it that you can complete, but I found the personal feedback from the consultant much more nuanced and customized to me.
Back to my first statement: this book is for those serious about gaining self-awareness of their abilities and setting their life/career direction. Except for the few rugged individualists, you will benefit most from working through the book with a friend, career counselor, coach, or a group that is providing support. For those seeking life direction, this is one of the best processes I've seen.
This book is mostly a waste itself.......2001-10-10
This book falls squarely in the self-help book genre and has all of the usual oversimplifications. One is urged to shed the various nefarious social systems which have operated on one since birth causing untold Stress, to find one's True Self, and to return to those very systems, mostly family and work, a new recharged and in-charge person. According to the authors, most simply need to go through a self-assessment process and thought experiments to reveal Personal Visions for the future.
Nowhere in the book do the authors discuss the power dynamics of the broader economy, society, and the polity and the impacts on persons. Managers are depicted not as powerful players in organizations who demand adherence to rules but as employee allies who want you to achieve your self-defined goals. Perhaps the authors could have reflected on the reason that labor unions formed. Or perhaps they could have pondered as to why social-democratic political parties exist in most democratic societies. The answer is most certainly not that corporations are interested in your True Self. Try the fact that workers and citizens need help against powerful players.
The authors operate a company that sells Whole Person Technology out of which comes a Personal Vision. Their customers are mostly large corporations which only adds suspicion about whom is to benefit. In fact, most of their individual customers seem to find happiness where they were previously unhappy. How convenient. For the readers of this book a battery of tests is available on CD for the tidy sum. The book has an unmistakable feel of being a promo for their self-help products.
In addition, the book is clearly intended for professionals, executives, managers, knowledge workers, etc. The book is loaded with snippets of case studies of such workers. Of course, they all found their Personal Vision. Apparently blue-collar workers don't have near the need to find a True Self.
Is the book completely bogus. No. It is Briggs-Myers on the cheap. Yes, distinctions between introversion and extroversion, specialization and generalization, logical and spontaneous, etc are minimally presented. If someone was hopelessly in the wrong job, perhaps that would be seen by reading this book ignoring the question of how he or she got there in the first place. But the book greatly oversimplifies the ability of individuals to make major transformations in their lives. I suspect that for most the costs and risks, resources and information available, and the power to affect change make real changes nearly impossible. And books that oversimplify the problems do not help.
.......Speackless.......2001-05-11
Great book. Didnt want to put it down!! These two quys figured my out, read me like a book! Im ready for success
Practical Help for Life's Turning Points.......2001-01-24
I enjoyed this book enough to read it several times and to give it to several friends. The authors weave years of experience and research findings into a plan book for discovering who we are and where we fit best. In doing so the book tackles head on the questions that so many of us have about fitting within the systems that surround us.
While most people would like to have life on their own terms, most are unclear on what those terms are. This book helps us uncover those terms through explanations, true stories and thought experiments that lead the reader through the interplay of one's core abilities, skills, interests, style, family background, values, goals and career development cycle.
This is a hands-on book-one that encourages active participation as well as simple understanding. It is inspirational without being glib; radical without sacrificing practicality. I recommend it to anyone who feels he or she is at a turning point.
