Customer Reviews:
A mediocre life yields a mediocre memoir.......2007-09-14
This book isn't terrible. If I could I'd give it 2.5 stars.
E Lynn Harris is black, and gay. This fact is stated so many times in the book that it is a wonder the book isn't titled "MY LIFE SUCKED BECAUSE I'M BLACK AND GAY, BUT MOSTLY BECAUSE I'M BLACK!!!! DID I MENTION I'M GAY!???!!!!!!" Seriously, all in caps, just like that, that should be the title of this book.
Lynn Harris is exactly the type of person I have zero interest in knowing. Nothing is ever his fault. He doesn't work hard, fails at everything, gets a second chance due to being the same race as his boss, or is accepted without proper qualifications because of affirmative action in the 70's.
But then... then he starts to succeed. He becomes a salesman, and you know what, he's good at that. Sure he didn't have the qualifications for the job and was initially hired because he was black, but it turns out that he is actually -good- at what he does. So does that success and greatness become a large part of the story? No, of course not, outside of work his entire life is a mess and he goes from closet case guy to closet case guy wondering why they treat him so poorly... while these guys still have girlfriends. Nothing is ever Lynn's fault of course.
Give me a break.
If you want to hear what it's like to be a complete loser, this is the story for you. You'll be fascinated by how self defeating one man can be.
The kicker is that at exactly 7 hours and 30 minutes in Lynn nails it down perfectly "...who would be interested in reading a story about a sexually confused black man who basically wasted ever opportunity given to him." Not me.
Amazing storu told of someones life .......2007-09-06
At some point I felt as if alot of his friends reflected many of his characters which and while after reading you discover they did lend him inspiration. It must have been very difficult to point out his flaws to his readers , and it was done very well at that. Most people prolly wouldnt want to reveal there past so openly to the public but E. Lynn did it and I can respect that.
Brokenhearted..........2007-04-18
Follow Harris on his journey of revelations about life and love in this well-written, east-to-read memoir. Within the first couple of pages, I burst into laughter, then as the story unfolded, I felt kind of bad for Harris. The abuse he suffered at the hands of his step-father and then the destructive life he led during his adult life makes you wonder how he survived it all, suicide attempts and everything. I think I've read all of E. Lynn's books and this one really shows you from where all of his prior offerings evolve. I'm glad that at the time this was published he had found the love he was searching for. I hope that love continues.
Beautiful and Strong.......2006-12-02
What Becomes of a Broken Heart. In it, E Lynn Harris offers a tough and tender glimpse of the man between the covers of more than a few literary sensations. The raw emotional honesty is heartbreaking at times, yet redeeming at others. Through some of the roughest storms, he blooms, beautiful and strong.
truly remarkable..........2005-12-27
I really enjoyed this book. I have read all of E. Lynn's work and by far this was the best. I cried, laughed and got upset several while reading this book. Truly it was remarkable.

A helpful book for dealing with loss and pain.......2003-04-13
Michelle McKinney Hammond presents the words of God as a source of comfort for the brokenhearted with a lot of love and caring, just as a best friend might. She presents stories of loss and betrayal from the Bible to remind us we are not alone in our hurts, then talks about Scriptures that point to God's love and care for us. Those are the words that keep coming up for me: Love and care. This book is great for anyone suffering a broken heart, especially when a relationship has broken up. It reminds us that we are always loved by God, we are always his children and his bride, and nothing can take that away from us. My only regret was that I didn't find this book sooner!
Prayer Guide for the Brokenhearted: Comfort.......2001-04-22
Ladies, if you are suffering from a broken heart then READ this book. It is FANTASTIC. Michelle is blessed with an ability to reach out to women and understand their pain. It has been said by others, and I totally agree, reading Michelle's books are like talking to your best friend. Every page that I read helped me in the healing process. Michelle understands, and when you are hurting you need someone who understands how you feel. Let's put it this way, I hate to spend a lot of money. However, I have just ordered all of Michelle's books, and had some of them delivered the next day.
Thanks Again Sistah McKinney Hammond!.......2001-03-28
Like apples of gold in settings of silver, comes another word fitly spoken by Sister Michelle McKinney Hammond. I began this book and then put it down for a few months. The Holy Spirit moved me to bring it along a trip I recently took. No matter what the source of your brokeness is, this book is for you. MMH (Michelle McKinney Hammond) takes actual events from Scripture and makes them come alive. You can relate to God's broken heart over His separation from man as well as Tamar's weeping following the rape by her brother Amnon. I found myself talking back to the book (on the airplane)! While going through 'The Pain' and 'The Process,' you'll think MMH is sittin' next to ya' kickin' it. As you come into 'The Promise' and 'The Peace,' you'll know the Spirit of God has chosen to move you beyond your hurt. READ THIS BOOK and get delivered. READ THIS BOOK and be healed. READ THIS BOOK and prepare for the blessings of God.
What to read when you're ready to move on..........2000-09-26

Comfort & Encouragement For Healing & A New Start.......2000-09-14

Book Description
This book grew out of the author's own experience with grief and loss from his fourteen-year-old daughter's death. He scoured books looking for comfort but found the Bible itself to be his greatest source of hope, comfort, wise counsel, and encouragement. After reviewing more than 200 books on grief and loss, he discovered that none investigated biblical passages oriented toward grief and loss themes. He set out to fill the huge, unmet need for a book that helps Christians embrace relevant Scriptures more fully and seriously in the midst of their mourning. The biblical selections deal with the hard questions, honest passions, and divine hope that only some who have walked down the path of sorrow could write about. Topics such as resurrection, the second coming, heaven, the resurrection body, doubt, anger, guilt, and dashed dreams are covered with great care to minister to the hearts of those who are grieving.

Tanya Bates - C&B Book Reviewer.......2005-02-11
This book is a self-help manual for survivors of abuse. I found this book to be a clear and concise explanation for the manifestations of the side effects of abuse. This book offers a practical look at scripture and attempts to provide answers to the problems and struggle that survivor's face each day. Todd Cook has written a book that not only can be useful to survivors of abuse, but anyone who struggles with low self-esteem and lack of self-respect due to past tragedies.
After reading this book, I shared it with people that I knew that were survivors of abuse in an effort to get a more realistic view of its effects. Each person was refreshed and renewed after reading the sections that I shared with them. Todd Cook is definitely using his pastoral and theological experience for good. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is striving to realize his or her greatness in GOD.
Book Description
Devotions for the Brokenhearted is the compilation of two previously published devotionals: Loss of a Loved One, and Loss of a Dream. "These books were written shortly after my daughter Anna's death while I was still in intense pain," said Robin. "Most of the books I read on grief are written a number of years after the loss. By then time and God's graciousness has dulled the hurt. I think the reason these devotions touch so many hearts is because people identify with that raw grief and at the same time sense the hope."
Customer Reviews:
A healing heart.......2007-03-09
This book is a very good for the one who is caught in the middle of a loss -one that may last a lifetime. The writings are short, which makes it easier for that person to read when nothing else makes sense. The author shares her heart, which will make it easier for you to share yours.
Hope in Heartache.......2006-08-10
This devotion deals with the raw pain that comes with loss, be that of a loved one or of a dream that is cherished with all one's heart. The author understands the real heartache that comes with great loss and never criticizes readers for having the full spectrum of emotions. This book helps readers to understand grief and how to acknowledge it, address it, and then begin to move forward. It truly is a blessing.
A Book That Can Heal Peoples Souls.......2006-07-28
Whether your grief is new and raw or lingering and unresolved, this book can be a powerful tool for healing. If you grieve the loss of a loved one through death or other life-altering circumstances, this devotional offers gentle guidance and companionship. Now that I have read the entire book, and gone through quite a few Kleenex on the way, the writing is beautiful, too. Everything is stated just perfectly, sensibly, sensitively, lovingly. I appreciate the authors openness, honesty and courage in writing it. The book is a beautiful gift that I'm sure will touch peoples lives and heal their souls.
Wonderful insight!.......2006-07-23
I have purchased several books to give to friends who are either grieving a loved one or any other kind of loss. I found that this is very comforting and encouraging without each devotion being long and overbearing. During the grieving process, I did not feel like reading pages but short encouraging devotions like these are ideal!

Book Description
A collection of poems from the poet of Salt Prayers, The Blind Beekeeper and Ramadan Sonnets, simultaneously plummeting down and somehow ascending, all the while embracing Whitmanic vistas in vision of longing and epiphany. As 11th Century Sufi Master, Al-Hujwiri writes in his Kashf al-Mahjub: When Moses conversed with God, he asked, "Lord, where shall I seek You?" God answered, "Among the brokenhearted." Moses continued, "But, Lord, no heart could be more despairing than mine." And God replied, "Then I am where you are."

Exqusitely wrought jewels from a sufi master poet.......2007-08-09
Daniel Abdal-Hayy Moore has been publishing his beautiful poetry for over 40 years. He writes Ghazals and other poems that celebrate life as he has seen it[and continues], filtered though the poetic lens of Sufism.Psalms for the Brokenhearted is just as the title Implies[though its implication is not quite what you would think] songs of courage and faith,of allowance and tenderness. This is a gentle salve of poetry, calming as a cooling breeze on a humid august day. Truly a superb poet, overlooked due to his faith{I wonder, similar to Daniel Berrigan in that regard?}.In the country of poetry, Daniel Abdal_Hayy Moore is a citizen of highest rank. His poems derserve a wide and enthusiastic reading and audience. Hugely recommended!!!!

comforting, spiritual perspective on coping with depression.......1999-06-05
Many who are trying to cope with depression feel spiritually muddled and shamed. Rea and Carol offer an enlightening perspective on viewing depression as a human condition that even faith-filled people suffer. Their book also describes the diagnosis and treatment of depression in an easily understandable manner. Praises to these women for helping to take depression "out of the closet" and for hopefully helping many people find comfort and spiritual sustenance in recognizing that they are not alone in their suffering.

Set in a small town on a river in New Brunswick, River of the Brokenhearted, David Adams Richards's first novel since his Giller Prize-winning Mercy Among the Children, is told by Wendell King, son of Miles King and grandson of the feisty, willful Janie McLeary King, who made her fortune running the town's first cinema. Set against this trio is the lower-class family of the Drukens, especially Rebecca Druken and her uncle, Joey Elias, bitter because their own early cinema failed. Established early on, the feud plays out across three generations, spanning successes, failures, murder, and dissolution. Yet despite the somewhat bleak subject matter, tremendous humour and vitality persist in this story. The characters leap off the page, and in the person of Miles King, Richards has imagined a fully human soul of stunning believability. Miles is fatally flawed, committing slow suicide by gin as his cinema too begins to fail in the face of the TV's small screen. A sensitive eccentric, a target of small-town narrowness, he is subtly tortured psychically, for years, by Elias and the vicious Rebecca, who have made the downfall of the Kings their life's ambition. Miles King is a character of great loneliness, pathos, humor, and compassion, one of the finest creations not only of Canadian writing but any literature.
River of the Brokenhearted is the story of a river, the Miramichi, but it is mostly about the river of time that passes through Miles King, his mother, his son, and their enemies, carrying all to their ultimate fates: "She had left a river in New Brunswick that would swallow you with its life, shout in its rapids, laugh in its eddies, create industry in its currents, a river of Irish and Scottish myth, wedded to the soil." An outstanding work of fiction. --Mark Frutkin
Book Description
In the 1920s, Janie McLeary and George King run one of the first movie theatres in the Maritimes. The marriage of the young Irish Catholic woman to an older English man is thought scandalous, but they work happily together, playing music to accompany the films. When George succumbs to illness and dies, leaving Janie with one young child and another on the way, the unscrupulous Joey Elias tries to take over the business. But Janie guards the theatre with a shotgun, and still in mourning, re-opens it herself. “If there was no real bliss in Janie’s life,” recounts her grandson, “there were moments of triumph.”
One night, deceived by the bank manager and Elias into believing she will lose her mortgage, Janie resolves to go and ask for money from the Catholic houses. Elias has sent out men to stop her, so she leaps out the back window and with a broken rib she swims in the dark across the icy Miramichi River, doubting her own sanity. Yet, seeing these people swayed into immoral actions because of their desire to please others and their fear of being outcast, she thinks to herself that “…all her life she had been forced to act in a way uncommon with others… Was sanity doing what they did? And if it was, was it moral or justified to be sane?”
Astonishingly, she finds herself face to face that night with influential Lord Beaverbrook, who sees in her tremendous character and saves her business. Not only does she survive, she prospers; she becomes wealthy, but ostracized. Even her own father helps Elias plot against her. Yet Janie McLeary King thwarts them and brings first-run talking pictures to the town.
Meanwhile, she employs Rebecca from the rival Druken family to look after her children. Jealous, and a protégé of Elias, Rebecca mistreats her young charges. The boy Miles longs to be a performer, but Rebecca convinces him he is hated, and he inherits his mother’s enemies. The only person who truly loves her, he is kept under his mother’s influence until, eventually, he takes a job as the theatre’s projectionist. He drinks heavily all his life, tends his flowers, and talks of things no-one believes, until the mystery at the heart of the novel finally unravels.
“At six I began to realize that my father was somewhat different,” says Miles King’s son Wendell, who narrates the saga in an attempt to find answers in the past and understand “how I was damned.” It is a many-layered epic of rivalries, misunderstandings, rumours; the abuse of power, what weak people will do for love, and the true power of doing right; of a pioneer and her legacy in the lives of her son and grandchildren.
“David Adams Richards is perhaps the greatest Canadian writer alive,” wrote Lynn Coady in the Vancouver Sun. From this winner of the Giller Prize and the Governor General’s Award comes a story of a woman’s determined struggle against small town prejudice, and her son’s long battle against deceit. Richards’ own family ran Newcastle’s Uptown Theatre from 1911 to 1980, and Janie is based on his grandmother. Cast upon this history is a drama that explores morality and “the question of how one should live,” as The Atlantic Monthly said of
Mercy Among the Children, his previous novel.
Reviewers agree that Richards’ fiction sits firmly in the tradition of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky by concerning itself explicitly with good and evil and the human freedom to choose between them. Once again, in
River of the Brokenhearted, his twelfth novel, Richards has created a work of compassion and assured, poetic sophistication which finds in the hearts of its characters venality and goodwill, cruelty and love.

Unraveling the Laws of Human Morality..........2004-12-06
This is the best book that I have read in a long time. David Adams Richards writes about dichotomous themes--good and evil, love and hate--in a world that seems to have lost its sense of distinction between such binary oppositions. Richards's novel spans four generations and tells the story of two families--the Drukens and the Mclearys--and their conflict-ridden estrangement from themselves and from each other. Janie Mcleary, the protagonist, is an assertive and successful business woman who is left widowed by her husband. She and her children are tormented by the Druken family. Her daughter, Georgina, is murdered and her son, Miles, grows up to be ghosted by his past. Characters in this novel are haunted by memories and stuggle with their faith, morality and integrity. Richard's capacity as an author, stems, in part, from his astute perception into the nature of human greed and faith. River of the Brokenhearted is not a sensuous romance novel; it is a journey into the moral struggles of humanity. Richards conveys the notion that the "good" people and the "bad" people are not always cut in black and white colors; some seemingly "immoral" characters (i.e. Miles the alcoholic) emerge as the unsaid heroes of this text. Past wrongs are translated into bodily ailments that afflict the characters on a physical level, but these wrongs are erasable. Characters are given the chance of redemption. This book resonates with spiritual undertones. It may increase your faith...
