Customer Reviews:
where's the ending???.......2007-10-02
While I am a big Grimes fan (love the Richard Jury series, and have read them all), I actually found this book to be rather a frustration. You see, the beginning really pulls the reader in--there's this fantastic tale Jury is told at a pub, and the story is rather a brain teaser. Well, and the intensity just builds from there...keeps you guessing the whole time...you stick through page after page of suspenseful dialogue between the characters (sometimes it feels like the characters are talking in circles around the plot)...takes you through all of this, only to drop you right after that. Yes, that's right...the book just drops off. Doesn't really give you much of an ending, which is frustrating to no end, since this book is really a story within a story. Rather a disappointment to have stuck with it through over 41 chapters, and then have it just fizzle out. Quite unsatisfying, that.
"Man walked into a pub..."
(Bah humbug to that! Where's the ending???)
The worst book I've ever read.......2007-08-15
Airport book is inconsistent and mind-numbing right out of the gate (where were this woman's editors??), careens downhill from there. Just terrible.
Personally, I liked the dog.......2007-08-03
I have to admit that I was disappointed in the ending, although I didn't have any trouble understanding it. There were some errors and, to be sure, some of the book bordered on fantasy, but I liked it, and I thought the dog and his feline housemate were a lot of fun. Of course, I enjoy Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie and the Cat Who series etc, also. I would have liked to see more resolution to the book, and I was a little skeptical that there was no way of solving the case. After all, these kids were no dummies and could have easily provided more aid to Jury. I will read the next one when I come across it, but I don't see me rushing to buy it.
not a bad outing.......2007-07-12
I have read all Ms Grimes' books, not so much because they are fabulous but because once I start reading a series, it's hard to quit it. Well, okay, there's also the wonderful Melrose Plant and his Aunt Agatha... The last several installments of this series, with the notable exception of The Winds of Change, have been either mind-numbingly confusing or crushingly depressing (too many dead children!) and sometimes, both. But Old Wine Shades is more playful than depressing. So I'd recommend it if you like her work and/or like a puzzle. If you have never read her before, I'd recommend a trip to the library to read up on the series starting with the first book, because otherwise, you won't know what the heck is going on...as I said, it's confusing and each book reads more like a chapter in the saga than a standalone story. IMHO, of course.
disappointed.......2007-06-13
A decent beginning and plot development then left to plod through a poor structure and no ending. I'm not kidding. There was no ending.

Book Description
Shades of Artemis recounts the life of Brasidas, Spartas most audacious commander, from his upbringing in the Spartan military school called the Agoge to his induction into the ranks of the ancient worlds finest warriors. Overcoming petty jealousies and the politics of his own country, he finally rises to the rank of general and embarks on a daring mission to bring Athens to its knees and an end to the Peloponnesian War. With the death of Pericles, the politician Kleon becomes the architect of war policy in Athens, directing the strategy against Sparta. Thucydides, the Athenian general and chronicler of the conflict, bears witness to the brutality of ancient combat, the devastating plague that strikes his city, and the ambition of fellow Athenians that rely on war to sustain them. In the last quarter of the fifth century BC, these three men would meet in battle on the plains of northern Greece and determine the course of Western Civilizations first world war.
Customer Reviews:
Brasidas is honored.......2006-07-17
I remember while reading Thucydides how I thought "Wow, this Brasidas fellow is one very competent General." Following a popular approach, Jon Edward Martin has breathed life into this historical figure, and in doing so he made the General into a living, breathing human who comes complete with a Spartan code-of-ethics.
Like most historical novels that detail ancient Sparta, we get a grand tour of the Agoge. Martin shows Spartan upbringing in all its brutal and arduous detail. While minute details of the Agoge are hard to come by, historically, Martin does a great job of expanding on the well known anecdotes that are known of the training.
The best part of the book for me was Brasidas' character development. To paraphrase Ernest Hemingway, the sign of good fiction is that it seems more real than if it had actually happened. While much of Brasidas' makeup was obviously fabricated in this novel, I can't help but think that the historical Brasidas would have shared the core values of the Spartan represented in this novel.
If you're a fan of ancient Greece and the Spartans, this book is for you. Those who wish to learn more about the landmark Peloponnesian will doubtlessly find this historical novel insightful. In addition to this present novel I would also recommend TIDES OF WAR by Stephen Pressfield and ISLE OF STONE by Nicholas Nicastro. Both novels potray other phases of the war.
A stunning novel of the Pelopenesian War.......2005-04-07
This novel makes a good companion to Steven Pressfield's "Tides of War" Both take place during the Peloponnesian War. However, the focus of each novel is different. While Pressfield's work revolves around Alcibiades and the ill-fated Athenian expedition to Syracuse, neither are mentioned at all by Martin. Instead, Martin has focused on the Spartan Brasidas and the rivalries in Sparta concerning how to fight the war. Thucydides also plays a large role in the book. The rivalries in Sparta in mirrored in Athens, where Pericles wants to stay behind the walls of Athens, while Kleon wants to attack. Be forwarned, however, that Martin's work is not for those without familiarity with Thucydides or the war. There are no maps and there is little, if any, explanation of background events. For example, if you don't know where the Chalcidice is or the importance of Amphipolis, you will be lost. For those with a good knowledge of Greek history, Martin has created a stunning work of historical fiction.

Nite-wing or Nightwing?.......2005-08-04
Nightwing, with much hard work, has finally made Bludhaven his own; Nightwing is now to Bludhaven what Batman is to Gotham. Dick Grayson is the protector of the few innocents that still grace the streets of Bludhaven, an urban cesspool that makes Gotham look like a good site for a Girl Scout meeting.
Superman makes an appearance early in the book, teaming up with Nightwing to pay Roland Desmond a visit. The relationship between Nightwing and Superman is very different from that of Batman and Superman. As one reviewer has already aptly pointed out, both Batman and Robin teamed up with Superman quite often. Robin, Dick Grayson, developed a stronger trust of Superman and invites his help. Batman views Superman as a hindrance.
One of my favorite characters is the blond-headed "Nitewing" who busts up criminals in true vigilante fashion. He is utterly obsessed and I eagerly await new books that reveal the reason he battles crime so fiercely. How will Chief Redhorn utilize the aid of this Nite-wing? And what will happen when the two Nightwings finally confront one another?
Another good series of plot twists, and a crime boss who refuses to fade away, the Nightwing series shows great promise. I've liked both books I've ordered so far.
Nightwing At His Best!.......2004-06-08
Chuck Dixon's run on the monthly "Nightwing" books with artists Scott McDaniel and Karl Story are among the best runs by a creative team ever. The trio created a likable lead character in the former Boy-Wonder, Dick Grayson, and placed him in a town-without-pity, Bludhaven. With this volume (the fourth in the Nightwing series by the trio), Nightwing truly steps out of the shadow of his mentor, Batman, and becomes his own man. This is the volume that has everything and more to satisfy even the most demanding comic fan. Examples?
1] A team-up with Superman that shows how deep the bond is that Dick shares with Supes. Remember that Dick was part of the "World's Finest" team in the Silver Age? (People always remember that team as a Batman-Superman team only!) Furthermore, in the Silver Age, Superman takes on the name "Nightwing" sometimes when he visits the Bottled City of Kandor. In this volume (set in post-Crisis continuity), we have Superman telling Nightwing the exploits of a "Kryptonian" hero called "Nightwing"! Also, see Superman take on the "kingpin" of Bludhaven, the Blockbuster.
2] Nightwing in the No Man's Land! See how Dick fights to bring order to Blackgate Prison. There's more action here than in all five "Batman: No Man's Land" tradepaperbacks combined! See how Chuck Dixon silence all the cynics and critics calling this book "Batman Jr." or "Batman Lite" once and for all with this pulse-pounding tale. Dick Grayson is indeed his own man now, no less than his mentor.
3] The kiss that seals a great love. In the Silver Age stories, we see Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) flirting many times with Robin, without it coming to any finality. Then by the 1970s-90s, Nightwing was primarily featured only in Marv Wolfman's "New Teen Titans" books (there, he was paired with the alien Starfire). In this volume, Chuck Dixon revives the Barbara-Dick romance with them finally expressing their love for each other. All in the midst of a life-and-death team-up against the mad, fanatical ex-GCPD cops.
4] This volume also sets up the brilliant storyline that is further expanded upon in future volumes - Dick Grayson as a police officer!
Lastly, I'd like to say that Scott McDaniel used to be my most hated artist at one time. Now, I can't get enough of the crazy perspectives and unbelievably "messy" details in his art. If you want comic-artwork that screams "action" and drives your adrenaline level all the way up, there's nothing comparable to the McDaniel-Story team.
Continuing to please.......2001-03-02
For some reason, my last review didn't show up, so apologies for the shorter on.
Definitely a must-read for any Nightwing fans.
Nightwing continues to come into his own as a hero, even as he's pulled by his ties to Batman. The strongest segment of this compilation is definitely the retaking of Blackgate, which includes the seemingly obligatory "Dick Grayson, this is your life" flashback series (this one, however, is thankfully light on the self-doubt that plagues our hero). Seeing Oracle in acition is worth the price of admission all on its own. The only caveat I'd add is that if you're not familiar with the events in Gotham (the quake, No Man's Land) and the players involved, it might get a bit confusing.
Less strong are the Double Dare and police academy storylines. DOuble Dare, while interesting enough, seemed a bit too cotton-candy in the midst of the other storylines, and while the idea of Dick going to the academy is interesting, it doesn't get nearly enough page time to be more than almost an afterthought.
The continuing intrigue of of the Bludhaven PD is shaping up nicely, and Blockbuster's new storyline almost makes you feel sorry for the big guy.
Overall, definitely worth acquiring.
Continues to please.......2001-02-28
I'm obsessed with Nightwing. Keep that in mind as you read this.
The adventures of the man who was Robin and is now Nightwing continue to provide solid entertainment. The ongoing storyline of Blockbuster takes an interesting turn here, one that almost has you feeling sorry for the man (well, maybe for his mother). Dick's decision to join the police force gets it's follow through, although not a lot of page time as of yet. The usual players their appearances: Babs (interesting stuff there), Huntress(ditto), Clancy, Tad (who seems to have learned little in the way of caution from his shooting), and, of course, the Bat.
Batman's appearance leads to what is certainly the best storyline in the compilattion: the retaking of Blackgate. It includes the seemingly required trip down memory lane, although this time with thankfully little of the self-doubt that plagues earlier storylines.
Meanwhile, in Bludhaven, things are brewing nicely towards some larger plot.
If anything cost this issue a star, it was the Double Dare segment. Don't get me wrong: I liked the ladies just fine. But sandwiched between a visit from Superman and the retaking of Blackgate, their hijinks seemed a little fluffy to me.
Definitely a must-own for Nightwing fans!

Book Description
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles travel through time to team with Usagi in 17th-century Japan! Collecting the first six issues of the Mirage-published Usagi Yojimbo, out of print since 1993, this is the eighth in a series of successful Usagi trade paperbacks. This book weighs in at a whopping two hundred pages!
Customer Reviews:
Classic Sakai, Classic Character, not just a comic book.......2001-11-28
The only bad thing about the Usagi books is the fact that few people on Amazon will ever read them.
Yet another fine mixture of the legends of Nippon intertwined with our favorite Yojimbo.
For Usagi fans standard fare, but for those who never have read one. A feast!
Turtles meet Rabbit, Rabbit vs Cats!.......2001-05-05
For this book, Leonardo is back to meet Usagi but this time, Leo is back along with his brothers. Meanwhile, the Neko Ninjas are planning to kidnapped Kakera (a Splinter look alike). If you're a Usagi fan, you don't wanna miss any of his books.
Below Average Usagi Yojimbo standard........1999-12-18
Turtles were a good joke in UY-Book3, but to continue their use in Shades of Death was a mistake. Still the book has good elements in it as well. Neko Ninja clan, etc. It is readable and purchaseable.
Action and Adventure, Samurai Rabbit style.......1999-12-17
I had known about Usagi Yojimbo for some time, but I wasn't really a fan until I picked up this book. Sakai masterfully blends Japanese history and values with action and adventure. Even though the character are all animals, it takes nothing away from the Classic samurai feel of UY.
A Great comic and a great book.......1998-08-05
This book has one of the best storylines i have ever read. It has everything....from warring clans to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (they show up to help Usagi with a clan of ninja's) Also a look at Usagi's life as a little boy... Highly recommended.

We know from the earliest pages of Neil Jordan's numinous, slow-building fourth novel, Shade that its narrator, 50-old Nina Hardy, has been murdered with a pair of gardening shears by her childhood friend George Truite. The mystery is not who has committed this crime, but why. And although George has been for some years a resident of the local insane asylum, only recently allowed to experiment again with independent living, his madness is but a small part of the answer to that question. Set in Ireland near Drogheda, at the mouth of the river Boyne, Shade casts a wistful eye on childhood desires and alliances, and its lonely-girl-in-a-big-house beginnings will call to mind William Trevor's The Story of Lucy Gault. But like Jordan's greatest success, the film The Crying Game, this novel is full of surprises--and the biggest shocks are not always the most telling. --Jill Harvey
Book Description
The Oscar-winning filmmaker Neil Jordan returns to fiction with a haunting, highly praised novel, his first in ten years. Narrated by the ghost of Nina Hardy, an actress who is murdered in the opening scene of the book, Shade tells the story of two pairs of siblings growing up in Ireland in the first half of the century. Through a childhood that memory gives the luster of romance and the tragedy that strikes as the children reach adolescence and the two boys leave for the Great War, these unforgettable characters reach the 1950s to play their roles in a murder ultimately revealed as the opposite of the senseless crime it seems.
Customer Reviews:
Huh?.......2005-12-14
This book reminds me of a false advertisement: pick it up and it sounds interesting, even those first crucial lines pull you in and then... Then we are pulled along on a tortuous journey into a writer's ego. This book is written in the kind of style that you want to be beautiful, even lyrical - Instead it's more often confusing. By page 17 I was skipping forward in hopes that it became more compelling. There is a languid air to Mr. Jordan's writing, which is fine as long as we care about what happens or why. Why the main character is killed by her childhood friend (no suprises, we know the killer's name on page one)is perhaps the clearest paragraph and half of the book. Unfortunately this doesn't happen until page 268, by then I was just glad to be done with it all.
Mr. Jordan's screenplays are wonderful, but this book is pure self-indulgence.
Disappointed.......2005-11-27
Pace was ploddingly slow through the first 14 chapters. Characters weren't engaging enough to warrant finishing this book.
Evocative, haunting.......2005-06-01
Neil Jordan's Shade is the story of Nina Hardy, who, as we find out at the beginning of the book, has been murdered by her childhood friend, George. The story revolves around a group of childhood friends, their journey through childhood, adolescence and their inevitable drifting apart, and ultimately leading to the reason for the gruesome murder. The narrator is the shade of the title, the ghost of Nina Hardy.
Shade is beautifully written. Although the pace of this book is leisurely, the characters are compelling and the wonderful descriptions of the landscape around the River Boyne leave you with a real feeling of the place.
If you're looking for a fast-paced ghost story, then this book is probably going to disappoint. However, if you enjoy a haunting story of human tragedy, then I highly recommend this book.
A POWERFUL TALE MOVINGLY READ.......2005-03-31
"The Crying Game" immediately signaled that here was an author with original and imaginative vision, a writer with the power to hold readers transfixed. "Shade" solidifies that impression.
A member of Dublin's Abbey Theatre and the National Theatre in London, Terry Donnelly is both beguiling and bewitching as she inhabits the ghostly voice of Nina.
Nina's death was not pretty. Her throat was cut with gardening shears by her childhood friend, George. He was many things, among them thorough as her body was never found. We learn this as she speaks to us from the afterlife.
Her narrative recounts a happy Irish childhood spent beside the River Boyne. Her companions were George and his sister, Janie. They were not born as fortunately as Nina, so they lived on the other side of the river. Nonetheless they were all boon companions; friendships were formed. Nina's half-brother, Gregory, completed the once carefree foursome.
However, time passes and things change, as do people. War takes its toll and one may never be the same. In true Jordan style the reason for the brutal killing is not revealed until the story's conclusion. It's unlikely that listeners will not be moved by this sometimes poetic, always powerful tale.
- Gail Cooke
Well written, elegiac, but slow, and ultimately boring.......2005-03-13
Yes, Jordan writes well, uses words and descriptions beautifully.
One of the many glowing blurbs on the dust jacket described it as "elegiac" and it certainly is, but elegiac only takes a book so far. Beyond that, you need interesting characters that the reader cares about, set in a story that moves with a compelling narrative. Perfect example, ATONEMENT. Sadly, SHADE joins the pile of books I put down after wading through more than 100 pages. I could not finish it even though I was trapped on a long airplane flight with nothing else to read.

Mallette Makes Magic!.......2007-07-31
Another fabulous offering from Mallette. I enjoyed The Honey Well and Shades of Jade turned out to be another gem. Main character, Marissa, is a woman who only dates married men. Imagine her surprise when someone begins to stalk her for dating their man. Who could it be - the wife of one of her suitors, best friend Charmaine, who? The ending left me laughing out loud as I could not figure out who the stalker could be and the big reveal was sheer perfection. Mallette has created a true page turner with plenty of imagery and dialogue that will find you enveloped in the life of Marissa and wondering just how this tale is going to end. A good book to take on vacation.

I like what this book was about, but some things were really predictable. Therefore I thought it was okay, could have been better.Marissa was something else, she needed to get her ass kicked, sleeping with married men.Just nasty. However, that's what made the book interesting and different.

Customer Reviews:
an okay anthology about a great topic.......2001-10-17
This is an anthology about black gay men. Unfortunately, the tales inside are not as fierce or defiant as the title would suggest. In many of the pieces, issues of race and sexuality take the back seat to "l'art pour l'art", typical literature. The pieces near the back are better than the introductory ones. The piece by James Earl Hardy (who almost never writes short stories) is great. Jaime Manrique has a piece here and I've never seen him write about black issues (he writes almost exclusively of latino ones). I am glad I have a copy of this book, but I liked "Brother to Brother" and other books on the topic much better.
