Book Description
This is an invaluable textbook, prepared by the Open University team and designed so that it can be read on its own or as part of the OU course. This second edition has been fully revised and updated including new colour illustrations increasing the striking spread of full colour diagrams throughout the book. The clarity of the text has been improved, providing comprehensive coverage of the evolution of ocean basins and their structure in a clear, concise manner aimed specifically at the student market.
In this second edition the technological advances in fields as diverse as:
- deep-towed instruments for `sniffing' hydrothermal plumes
- mapping the sea-floor by sophisticated sonar techniques
- three-dimensional imaging of crustal structure by seismic tomography
- the use of satellites for navigation, and for making precise measurements of the height of the sea-surface
The first chapters describe the processes that shape the ocean basins, determine the structure and composition of oceanic crust and control the major features of continental margins. How the 'hot springs' of the oceanic ridges cycle chemical elements between seawater and oceanic crust is then explored. Sediment distributions are examined next, to demonstrate how sediments can preserve a record of past climatic and sea-level changes. Finally, the role of the oceans as an integral part of global chemical changes is reviewed.
High quality full colour diagrams
Substantial chapter summaries ideal for revision
Answers, hints and notes for questions at back of the book
Book Description
At the nexus of art and science, this dazzling new edition of Ernst Haeckel's first work reintroduces the genius of an enigmatic scientist and passionate observer of the natural world.
Although original editions of this book are extremely rare, it is now available for the first time in paperback, beautifully reproducing his drawings and watercolors. While the variety and detail of Haeckel's drawings display an impressive understanding of biological structure, the skill with which Haeckel drew these tiny aquatic protozoa renders them genuine works of art. This volume features commentary and descriptions of each of the radiolarians from Haeckel's work.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing and Little Known Organisms Illustrated.......2006-03-24
Radiolarians are a total blank to the majority of people, yet these remarkable builders of glass houses (microscopic to be sure) abound in the world's oceans. Ernst Haeckel, the Nineteenth Century German biologist and supporter of Darwin, wrote the most comprehensive monograph on the group in his Radiolarian Atlas of 1862, which is still in use today. The illustrations have never been surpassed and so it is certainly a boon for microscopists that the plates have now been republished in all their glory as "Art Forms from the Ocean: The Radiolarian Atlas of 1862". In many ways I wish that the text would have included descriptions of the radiolarians illustrated and their distributions, but that probably would have been of little interest to the general public. Instead there is a discussion of Haeckel's life and work, especially of his involvement with radiolarians and other microscopic marine life.
Still, for the price this is a real bargain, and I thus recommend this book just for the plates to any amateur or professional biologist who is interested in the micro planktonic organisms of the ocean.

Guaranteed Success.......2000-02-22
As a 1st Grade teacher, I have a wide range of reading and handwriting abilities. Keeping them all motivated can be a challenge. I have yet to meet a child, however, who will not jump at the chance to draw. I have the Draw Write Now series and am anxiously awaiting Book 7. No matter what the child's level, they can experience instant success in this program. The step-by-step directions are clear and easily understood. I find that after the writing and drawing, the students are motivated to extend their lesson with other reading and writing experiences, as well as with a variety of art projects.

Replacing the copy my son fell in love with!.......2003-10-30
My mother purchased this book for my son for Christmas 2 years ago. He has this fascination with the ocean and loves to draw! We had a blast with this book!
The pictures are VERY easy to do, and the direction....if you notice even down the to pressure of the pencil....this book is awesome!
For my son - who is 9 - and me, who has taken many classes, this simplifies it.
Great step by step directions for awesome results!.......1998-10-15
My 7 year old daughter chose this book at her school book fair. She loves to draw, and with the step by step instructions in this book, her ocean creatures are great. People are always amazed at the drawings. We have tried other drawing books, without success. This book gets an A+. 10 year old big sister and her friends enjoy the book also. They are studying animals in 5th grade, and have a project to do on the different types. Each report must include a drawing of the animal they write about. This book has helped greatly with the fish. A fifth grade teacher was so impressed she asked me if I would order her this book and 4 other Draw titles by Peel Books. Thanks, from a very satisfied mom.
Book Description
Whimsical, appealing drawings spring like magic from the page as young artists learn how to make charming creations from simple shapes. Each step is carefully shown and finished in full color. Fun examples and instructions all but guarantee success for budding cartoonists!
Starting with simple shapes and the most basic materials, these books show young artists the essential skills involved in combining shapes to make characters and objects, simplifying and coloring them.
Anyone familiar with Freddie Levin's previous titles will recognize her warm and inviting colored pencil drawing style in 1-2-3 Draw Ocean Life. After introducing basic shapes and fish vocabulary, she includes whales and dolphins, sea turtle, squid and octopus, crab and shrimp, starfish, sea cucumber and jellyfish, and much more.
In addition to their subject-matter appeal, the simplicity of many of the colorful drawings makes success easy for younger, less experienced artists, while at the same time the more challenging subjects (an eel and a shark twisting away from the viewer), subtle colors and shading will engage those with more finely-honed skills.

Practical Step-by-Step Guide.......2006-05-25
Through the use of basic shapes like circles, ovals and triangles, children can learn to draw a variety of creatures from the sea. You can start with easy sea shells and move on to the more complex shrimp and octopus.
The Clown fish begins with a simple oval and the instructions take you through a instructional and visual journey. All the steps are sketched out making the drawings super fun and easy to copy. A pencil, eraser and colored pencils are all you need. You could also paint the final drawings.
The pictures include a cute Sea Horse, Sea Turtles, Crab, Shrimp, Coral Reef Fish, Dolphins, Whales, Anemones and many more...
1-2-3 Draw books are perfect for new artists learning about the basics of drawing and this book will provide hours of fun activities. Once you learn how to draw the sea creatures, you can then put them all in one picture with a coral reef.
~The Rebecca Review
1-2-3 books are all great.......2005-07-12
Having been introduced to the 1-2-3 books at our local library, I was excited to see the ocean life being released as the aquarium is one of our children's favorite places to visit. They love to draw the different types of sea creatures and the way that the illustrations are broken down, even very young children can create a fish that resembles the actual creature. I love all the 1-2-3 books and we use them regularly.

The "Kids Can Draw" series is great!.......2000-01-16
All of the books in the "Kids Can Draw" series are great for kids who are just learning to draw. It teaches how to put shapes together using basic steps. This book has given my 5 year old confidence in her drawing ability. I would recommend this book, or any book in this series, for children. However, it is also good for beginning drawers of all ages. If you can hardly draw a straight line, this book is for you. And the price ain't bad either.
