The plan itself is blissfully simple:
THE PREQUEL: Seven days of adding detox support foods to your diet to prepare your body for the one-day Fast
THE FAST: One day of sipping Gittleman’s “Miracle Juice,” a deliciously spiced mixture of herbs and spices specially designed to stave off hunger, balance blood sugar, boost metabolism, and replenish nutrients (no kidding, the juice is completely delicious)

Inside there are recipes to prepare for the fast, shopping lists, and tips for sailing through the fast.
In addition, Ann Louise Gittleman shares the wisdom she’s gained from years of research on health, diet, and nutrition. You’ll find out about hidden toxins found in the environment and in everyday foods, and learn easy steps you can take to live healthier every day.

Good idea, but overpromissing.......2007-09-24
There is one thing that I absolutely agree with Ann Luise - the amount of chemicals that we are exposed to in our daily lives is overwhelming. I think that cleansing our bodies from them ("unchemicalizing ourselves") from time to time is a very good idea.
There are several other authors that pointed to this problem in the past. There are also a few who suggested better or worse cleansing solutions. One author dealing extensively with this topic in her few books is Hulda Clark. Gittleman's Detox Diet is only a good addition to the anthology. I do, however, have a problem with the "eight pounds weight loss in a day" idea. Isn't this just a little over-promising?
My favorite author dealing with this topic is Mikhail Tombak who offers total body cleansing solutions (starting with the liver, via kidney, intestines, bones and joints, and ending with blood) in one of the chapters of his book "Can We Live 150 Year?" At the same time Mr. Tombak does not promise losing weight overnight...
More about detox , than weight loss.......2007-07-13
I'm a big of Ann Gittleman. I have all her Fat Flush books. I think that the information they provide is invaluable. I learned a lot from reading her books. I've had success with this book and the Fat Flush Plan. To be honest, I did not lose the weight that I expected to lose from this detox diet. As one reviewer points out, it takes a lot of other factors to help you lose weight. However, the detoxification that I got was worth more than the extra pounds of weight loss. My actual weight loss came from Fat Flush. But, Fast Track helped to make my liver and colon much healthier. On this detox diet, sometimes it was hard for me to find a food within each of her categories that I liked, but I did my best. I liked the Miracle Juice, and it was easy to prepare. I really didn't think it was that bad. The detox day didn't affect me in any adverse way. I ate the next day, but I wasn't ravenous. To anyone who is thinking about purchasing this book, just know in advance that this book will help you in many ways, but it is a very tough 11 days. Just make sure that you're up to it before you begin. Also know that because it says that you COULD lose up to 8 pounds doesn't mean that you will. All I can tell you is that I enjoyed this book, and I will use it again to detox. Five stars for detoxification!
Not really "One-day" as it claims.......2007-04-25
Having lived in Germany I was already familiar with the idea of quick fasts and fasting groups to cleanse the body and periodically offset weight gain. I haven't tried this one because it seemed pretty complicated and requiring lots of effort, planning and the purchase of special stuff like supplements. I was also pretty put off when I read that there was a highly structured 7-day "prequel" to the detox. One-day huh?
Suprise eating health makes you feel better..........2007-03-29
Long term weight\fitness changes require long term effort.
That being said nothing like a jumpstart, new book, fad diet to get you going.
Detox and weight loss.......2007-03-25
Outlines a great program that works for detoxifying your body and for weight loss that still leaves you full of energy

I couldn't bring myself to do it..........2007-09-30
I enjoyed reading this book and got hyped about trying this diet. Before I could give it a whirl though, I let my friend borrow the book over the weekend and by Monday, she had already started it. I decided to let her do it for awhile to see how it went.
She faithfully followed the directions in the book for about a month but did not feel better or lose any weight.
After watching her struggle to drink the shakes and spend a small fortune on the vegetables for the broth, I opted not to do it. (I do not like to be in the kitchen.)
Instead, I cut out most white flour, white sugar in my diet. I have been following it most of the time for the past three months. I am back into my skinny pants... was in a 9, now in a size 5.
So, if you want an entertaining read that will inspire you to do something about your diet, this is probably a good read. But if you want an Ultra-Simple Diet, this may not be a good one for you because it requires a lot of prep work and time in the kitchen.
do not bother.......2007-09-25
waste of money- same old info we all know- nothing new or helpful- I donated mine- it was really that lame!
Another Reminder.......2007-09-18
Mark Hyman reminds us once again about all the important rules that we all know but somehow fail to follow: timing of meals, portion sizes, eating fruits and vegetables, exercising, etc. The book is another reminder to put these rules into practice, to get measurable results. In my opinion this is a good book for anyone that is new to dieting. As long as you follow the advice you will be looking and feeling great. For some original ideas on weight loss I suggest "Can We Live 150". Tha chapter on obesity in that book is not to be missed.
Other recommended titles: Cure the Incurable
It is not all about Him!.......2007-09-13
I found this book hard to read until after I got through all the stuff about the author. I have no doubt that he is great, but he sure told us that over and over!
I also think that this will be a hard diet to do without spending a lot of money just on the new foods one needs to eat.
Liked Ultrametabolism Better.......2007-09-13
Although I LOVE Dr. Hyman, this book didn't agree with my system. My stomch was in a state of unrest for about three weeks, even after I stopped eating flax seeds, tofu, etc. I did lose a few pounds, but I lost on Ultrametabolism, just not as quickly. I think I may just have a sensitive stomch for certain foods recommended here, which is unusual for me. All in all, the science makes sense in all of his books and literature and I reviewed Ultrametabolism last year. WELL worth the money. If your in for a quick fix, go for this one, but be careful if you have a sensitive system.
Book Description
This superbly illustrated text familiarizes students with individual muscles and muscle systems and demonstrates basic clinical massage therapy techniques. More than 550 full-color illustrations of internal structures are embedded into photographs of live models to show each muscle or muscle group, surrounding structures, surface landmarks, and the therapist's hands. Students see clearly which muscle is being worked, where it is, where it is attached, how it can be accessed manually, what problems it can cause, and how treatment techniques are performed. This edition features improved illustrations of draping and includes palpation for each muscle. An accompanying Real Bodywork DVD includes video demonstrations of massage techniques from the book.
Customer Reviews:
Best massage therapy book on the market .......2007-10-08
Why you should buy this book:
1. If you want to teach yourself massage.
2. If you massage school gave you a crappy Milady's massage book, or worse, their own hand written, poorly illustrated version.
3. If you really want to own a great massage therapy reference.
Why I think its so great:
The illustrations and visuals, give you everything you need to know to massage any area of the body. They have created a much more 3-d experience to learning massage from a book and translating that experience to a real body. ANYONE can learn from this book. Its an incredible resource. I don't know why every school doesn't use this book! If you are in school -- buy it!
I borrowed this from my library before purchasing it.
It is a must for an massage therapist, bodyworker, or closet healer!
Also great for National exam review.
Just Great.......2007-07-17
I have bought many books and DVD's on massage and anatomy and this is by far the best. It acomplishes what others often fail at and what all my teachers tried to instill in me, looking at a body in a 3 dimensional way. Did I mention the DVD? I was soo suprised that it actually showed everthing (well at least all the anatomy, palaptations, striping and crossfibering) thats in the book. I am very glad I bought this book and see using it again and again, unlike several DVD's and books I currently have.
Basic Clinical Massage Therapy: Integrating Anatomy and Treatment (Lww Massage Therapy & Bodywork Educational Series.).......2007-07-15
can only say 'FABULOUS'!!! One of the most clearly illustrated, and easy to understand texts available, great for students and teachers alike!
excellent study guide .......2007-07-05
Highly recommended -I am finding it a great study guide and will be using it for years to come ! an essential tool for massage
why this book was not referred during Massage Therapy studies?.......2007-06-14
I am surprised at the depth of knowledge this book imparts to massage therapist. It will be more useful for National Massage Therapy examination for all aspiring therapists.

Stepping around the low-fat versus low-carb debate, Jorge Cruise (Eight Minutes in the Morning) suggests that losing weight isn't in what you eat, but rather, when you eat it. The core idea behind The Three-Hour Diet is that by timing your meals and snacks every day, the pounds will come off. No restrictions, no exercise.
While reality is rarely that simple, the advice offered here is nutritionally sound, emphasizing plenty of fruits and vegetables, and filling in with lean proteins, healthy fats, and just enough carbs to keep meals interesting. Following Cruise's guidelines for portion control, you'll eat an average of 1,400 calories per day, filling half your plate with fruits or vegetables, and dividing the other half between the rest of the food groups. Healthy meals from fast-food joints and freezer cases are included, and a substantial recipe section offers everything from a bacon and cheese omelet to rosemary lamb chops. A month-long journal is also provided, giving you space to plan each meal in advance (a key part of the diet), along with daily motivational hints and visualization exercises. A few pages cover basic exercises--but the emphasis is definitely on the diet, which Cruise asserts will work, regardless of whether you choose to work out.
Cruise's straightforward, no-excuses encouragement works well with the simple formula the plan is based upon, and the clever Three-Hour Plate™ makes it easy to keep portion sizes in check. Still, closely monitoring meal time might seem like a challenge to some of the "busy people" for whom the program claims to be specifically designed. If counting calories or net carbs sounds dauntingbut keeping a close eye on the clock doesn'tyou might just find weight loss success in these pages. Jill Lightner

Tired of fad diets and their lack of results? That's just how Jorge Cruise, author of The Three-Hour Diet, wants you to feel. Cruise's guidelines encourage sensible portion control and plenty of vegetables, but--perhaps more importantly--they encourage dieters to feel good about themselves by teaching self-acceptance and positive visualization. Stressing an easy-to-follow visual food plan that insists on incorporating snacks and treats into your day, he contends that carb-bashing is a highly ineffective means of maintaining a healthy weight. How can you sort out weight-loss fact from fiction? Amazon.com contributor Jill Lightner got some straight answers from Cruise. |

Book Description
It's a fact: the low–carb craze is everywhere. Another fact: two–thirds of Americans are still overweight and no one is getting thinner. Although low–carb diets produce short term weight loss, the results are not sustainable in the long term. Dieticians, fitness experts, and medical publications are slowly awakening to the fact that the low–carb diet isn't the answer to weight loss nor a solution to the obesity epidemic.
What is the solution? Jorge Cruise's THE 3–HOUR DIET reveals that timing is the revolutionary weight loss element that has been kept secret until now. By eating small, balanced meals every three hours you reset your body's metabolism and achieve amazing results. Eating every three hours turns off your "starvation protection mechanism" ensuring that fat is released and fat–burning muscle preserved. So get ready to lose 2 pounds each week! All with no calorie counting, no starvation, and no deprivation. Bottom line, timing will sculpt your body slim.
With his now trademark easy–to–follow instructions, accessibility, and client success stories, Jorge Cruise's THE 3–HOUR DIET is a fluid combination of proven success and categorical innovation. Weight loss has never been easier!
Customer Reviews:
Worked for me. I recommend it!.......2007-09-13
I got this book about a month and a half ago. I also got the cookbook and followed the recipes. I started on the diet for real 1 month ago. In the last month I have lost 20 pounds and 2 inches off my belly. All I have done is followed the diet with a little cheating and jogged 2-4 times a week for 30-40 minutes (not part of the diet, but a good idea since I cheat a little). I don't know how proven the science is behind eating every 3 hours, for me it is more of a psychological thing...if the meal I just had didn't seem to totally fill me up it doesn't matter because I know I'm going to eat again in another 3 hours. i also like that it does not rely on only one type of food nor does it totally prohibit any food. It is all about decreasing calories and portion control. The cookbook is so great because if you follow the recipes you don't even have to think about how any calories you are eating because they have already been counted for you. Admittedly some of the recipes are not all that great tasting, but there are o many of them in there that we have found plenty that we love. This is not just something you do half heartedly, it is all or nothing if you want results, but it is very easy to stick to. It is not just atemporary "diet" it has become a way of lifelong healthy eating.
Update 10/14/07
I have not been exercising for the past few weeks, but I continue to lose weight. I have lost a total of 27 lbs. and 4.5 inches around my belly.
Catchy.......2007-08-31
I like evaluating new diet books now and then and this one caught my eye with its catchy title. While the title almost implies that you only have to diet for three hours, the true meaning is that you need to EAT every three hours. By doing this, your body doesn't go into starvation mode which will eventually undermine your goal to lose weight.
Reader friendly and well laid out, I'd have to say its not a bad plan all in all. However, even if you follow it to a 'T', you'll be doing the same thing you've always had to do to lose weight successfully- eat less and exercise more. Readers unable to lift weights due to shoulder pain or a torn cuff might also like Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff.
Eating Every 3 Hours.......2007-08-11
With client success stories and the same easy-to-follow instructions that helped make "8 Minutes in the Morning" a bestseller, Jorge Cruise's "The 3-Hour Diet" is a winning combination of proven results and categorical innovation.
Practical, Effective and Overall WONDERFUL PLAN.......2007-07-28
As a "professional" dieter-having tried and paid for almost every pill, diet and device in the universe-I can't say enough positive things about this book,as well as the online site the auther developed. This eating plan is totally livable, easy to follow without weighing and measuring, and ultimately the best thing since white bread (no pun ingtended). I have been on this for only 2 weeks now and I am down 6 pounds-no easy feat for a 58 year old short woman who has another 20 pds. to loose. I highly recommend this book, and his eating plan as well as his simple exercise plan. In addition, having used other weight loss sites, I truly love his -it is easy to navigate, has a great deal of inspiration from people all over the place who have lost huge amounts of weight(and I mean huge-like 155 pds) and had great ideas that are easy to implement.
We're paying him...........2007-07-01
.....For things we ought to know. I guess it sounds "new" and "good" when its put with the word "diet" in front of it. Being the fact that we are practically obsessed with out weight as Americans anything with the word "diet" seems like yet ANOTHER way to be strict and try something else to shed the pounds. Thing is... as a technicality, I've read about similar plans elsewhere. small portions spaced out for about six meals a day should work BECAUSE we live in a world where people skip meals only to gorge themselves when they do eat is worst than eating six small continuous meals.
I do admit his "ideas" of portions COULD be practical for those who are visualizers but otherwise it comes off as stupid and... well not practical while people like me, who have to look at calories and make guesses, are better off with the six meal ideas and just remember "I eat again in three hours". Well I'm coming off the soap box now, and just saying, have some common sense people and become more conscious of what is going into your mouth.
Book Description
Low Carbon Diet: A 30 Day Program to Lose 5000 Pounds is a book that is destines to become a movement. Arriving just in time to meet the groundswell of demand created by An Inconvenient Truth, it guides readers through an accessible step-by-step program for personal CO2-reduction that leaves them empowered and inspired at the difference they can make toward the issue of our time.
Grounded in over two decades of environmental behavior change research, this illustrated workbook offers readers much more than a to-do list of eco-friendly actions. With practicality and humor, bestselling author and environmental change pioneer David Gershon walks readers through every step of the carbon-reduction process, from calculating their current CO2 footprint to tracking their progress and measuring their impact. By making simple changes to actions they take every day, readers learn how to reduce their annual household CO2 output by at least 15%. And, for those who are more ambitious, there are chapters on how to become "carbon neutral" and help one's workplace, local schools and community do the same.
A recent Yale University study revealed that over three-quarters of Americans not only accept the reality that their lifestyle is contributing to climate change; they believe they have a responsibility to do something about it. Now, with the release of Low Carbon Diet, they have a practical tool to help them succeed.
Customer Reviews:
Best Diet Book I've Read.......2007-10-16
I read many environmental books, most of which scare you with the doom and gloom before attempting to give you solutions. This book gives you the tools you need to make a difference on a worldwide problem. I highly recommend reading it and unlike most diet books - practice these tips the rest of your life.
The books are lost.......2007-08-16
I have not received these items, they seem to have gotten lost in the mail. it says they were delivered, but they cannot be found in the building where they were shipped. Please advise on how to get the books, can we get them resent? we were charged money for them, but still havent seen them.
Leah Elimeliah
an accessible program for losing carbon "pounds".......2007-07-09
This new program to help people move beyond hand-wringing over global warming and onto concrete things they can do to address the problem is accessible, approachable, something many people and families should be able to pick up and use. The book is short, only 72 pages, and only the first few pages are spent on describing the problem: global warming. The rest of the book takes you by the hand and leads you through some straightforward actions you, anyone, can take. There are 22 actions in all, divided into three sections. The first describes "cool lifestyle practices," habits or behaviors you can change immediately (reducing garbage, taking shorter showers, driving less). Each action is quantified, in terms of how much carbon will be reduced as a result. The second section describes "cool household systems," making more significant changes or purchases to your car, appliances, or household systems (sealing air leaks, buying a hybrid car, tuning up your furnace). The third describes spreading the word: to your workplace, friends, community, kids' schools, etc. The idea is to commit to "losing" 5,000 pounds/yr (a roughly 10% cut in the average US household's energy usage). But you can choose which actions you want to take, and which you don't, to reach your goal, making it a flexible tool.
The program can be undertaken by an individual or a family alone, but the recommended process is organize a group of 5-8 households to do it together, over the course of four meetings, supporting each other through the process.
The program grows out of years of research by the Empowerment Institute on what it takes to make social change happen. This differentiates the book from others aimed solely at getting people to understand the problem of global warming. The book's strength lies here: in giving people a user-friendly tool to help move beyond rhetoric and into action.
Fun, Inspiring and Practical.......2007-01-29
The carbon diet program provided our household a way to learn what
our carbon footprint was (shockingly massive) and a way to reduce our
impact on the earth in a fun, inspiring and practical manner.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to do more than just read
about global warming. The Low Carbon Diet is the book you need
to learn how to make a real difference.
Buy Ten Copies--Create a Good Neighborhood.......2007-01-28
This book is about more than reducing the carbon foot-print of your home, it is tailor made for creating a good neighborhood by giving busy neighbors distanced by suburban sprawl or urban anonymnity a really fun and rewarding focal point for coming together.
There are twenty-two specific things that one can do in their home or in relation to their local school or community (most have to do with the home).
I see a real opportunity for a third party developer at Amazon to create a niche business--what I really need as a busy professional is a single Amazon URL where I can go and select all of the low-cost products needed to implement this book's recommendations (e.g. the water-saver showerhead with the instant off-on lever), have them charged to my Amazon account, and delivered to my front door.
I'd also like to see a way for people to register their homes the way we register Wildlife Habitats--completing this check-list should allow registry of the home and count toward the appraisal value.
I recommend the book be bought in lots of 10, used to bring together the other 9 houses nearest you, and then passed on down the neighborhood.
The resource section at the end is helpful, and I was especially struck by the disaster resilience recommendations. I know a lot of otherwise mainstream folks that are starting to sign up for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Red Cross courses on disaster relief, earning the green hard-hat and body covering. Something is happening at the grass roots level--a combination of innate fear that the federal and state governments will fail us as they did with Katrina, and a more constructive sense of responsibility, with more people realizing that resilience starts at the local level with specific individuals planning and preparing so as to prevent local disasters from becoming catastrophes.
For related reading on the psychology of what prevents people from preparing and reacting, see my review of "Catastrophe & Culture: The Anthropology of Disaster." Disasters do NOT have to become catastrophes, we make them so through denial before, during, and after.

This is not a new book .......2007-03-13
I loved Jessica Weiner's books A Very Hungry Girl and Do I Look Fat In This. Therefore, when I saw she had a "new" book out, I immediately ordered it from Amazon without paying attention to details. Please be aware that if you already own Do I Look Fat In This, you do not need to order Life Doesn't Begin 5 Pounds From Now; this is the same book with a different title and a new forward. So now I own two copies of this book with different covers, but I don't mind so much because it is filled with wonderful information for not-slim women like me. Guess I must have needed to re-read it, huh?
YOU CAN'T FEEL FAT -- BECAUSE FAT IS NOT A FEELING..........2006-10-23
If you're tired of dieting, this may be the book for you. Jess's book is a breakthrough experience for anyone who has struggled with self-appearance and self-esteem....and isn't that most of us. She believes that by focusing on what others tell you are your shortcomings-- you miss opportunities to feel connected, sexy and powerful. Whether you're a size 2 , 12 or 22 or beyond-- you can benefit from Jess's words of wisdom. The motivational speaker, author and self-described "actionist" versus Activist...writes in plain English and tosses in some great motivational quotes from famous people and some fun facts about self approval and more. Twelve chapters plus an afterword are included..and the chapters are fun to read-- get this even if you don't have the time to read it-- just scan it and you'll benefit -- I promise...ANyway the chapters range from Decoding the Language of Fat...to the Famous or should I say infamous question most women ask daily "Do I look Fat in This? to "I Feel Fat" to If I were Thinner, He'd Love me" to Thunder Thighs Run in my Family to Ch 6-- I'd be so happy if I looked like a Celebrity to 7) Once I lose some weight..... to 8) All of my Friends are not and I'm not...9) But I'm jsut trying to be healthy to 11) [...] 12) Sorry I don't speak that language. Quizes, roleplaying experiences and fun quizes are interspersed with TAKE ACTION steps...Probably the most important thought though is that YOU CAN"T FEEL FAT -- because fat is not a feeling-- and if you read that section alone (I don't want to steal her thunder with her response to this) ...you'll benefit greatly...AN amazing lady and a fun, easy-to-read book that's great for girls above 12, teens, college chicks and women of any age...great to get this before the holiday parties start! Fun birthday gift...
incredible.......2006-06-28
I can't begin to describe my difficulties of growing into the body I am going to have as a woman, but I don't have to because Jessica did it for it for me. There are very few ways to describe how it feels to read "Do I look fat in this?" except to say it's freeing. As I turned the pages I would eat up every word & little by little i could breathe easier.
Jessica is the start of something amazing that i want to be a part of!!
"She wins who calls herself beautiful and challenges the world to change tp truely see her" - Naomi Wolf
Genuine connection heals........2006-05-11
I have been a psychotherapist for about as long as Jessica has been on the planet and a writer longer than that. From both of these vantage points I applaud this excellent book. Most of all, Jessica is honest and vulnerable in what she has to share and teach and it is that kind of genuine connection that really helps people heal. Buy 2 copies; you'll want to give one away.
A Good Read for Those Struggling with Body Image.......2006-02-23
This is a good book for young women struggling with body image and self-loathing. Those suffering from an eating disorder often feel alone and isolated - this will help them to know that they are not alone. The book sends the message of learning to accept themselves and reject the unattainable quest for perfectionism.

I lost 5 lbs the first week!.......2007-04-25
I love this program. I have used it after both of my pregnancies and have had great results. I have lost 5 lbs the first week, and I even cheated a little bit. My only compaint is eating the same food for so long. But even if you can only do it for a while it's a great jump start to help you lose weight and get motivated.
Didn't have to purchase to get the point.......2007-03-09
You basically eat a big breakfast, decent lunch, and a tiny dinner. I really didn't have to spend $25 to do this. The sunshine tea thing, is hot lemon water. I expected more out of this book, based on all the hype.
lot of hype.......2007-03-09
It's good not to eat heavily before going to sleep. But how many people want to eat their dinner in the morning? This diet sure isn't for me. I gave it 2 stars because the concept of not eating heavily at night is good for weight loss, since this is the time most people overeat. Other than that, I'd say don't bother. I'm sorry I bought it.
A bit skeptical.......2007-02-15
I just watched 'The 700 club" which had these two women on their show. I have to admit what they say sounds interesting, but in reality I think there is some untruths here.
First off I have'nt read the book so I don't know the exact time frame she is claiming to have lost this much weight. But according to the introduction to the book " Publisher's Weekly" she claims to have lost 172 pounds in nine months.
On the TV she told Pat Robertson it was 150 pounds in 9 months. So what is it, 172 pds. or 150 pds. Sorry but I am stickler for details. This woman also claims to have lost 100 pds. in 3 months with just diet and some light walking and being a mother.
I find this very hard to believe as one who entered the "Body for Life" challenge several years ago. I can testify to the fact that if you want to lose weight you must diet and exercise, and exercise a lot if you really want to cut up and shed that fat! You just can not lose 100 pds. in three months on diet alone and "some walking" unless of course she walked about 25 miles per day. That's about 25 pds. per week or approx. 6 pds. per week. At the very least most Doctors would advise against this much weight loss in that time frame!
I would say in closing anyone who really wants to lose weight and get fit must truly have the desire to do so. Eat 5-6 small meals a day, cut back on your portions and exercise. Go lift weights and walk or ride a bike or swim, just get your body moving at least 30-60 minutes a day. Go for it-maybe I should write a book, at least I would'nt exaggerate my weight loss and Pat Robertson, please be more careful who you have on your TV show.
More Guidance needed.......2007-02-09
I was expecting more info such as how much is best to eat for meals and snacks as well as sample menus such as how many protien, carbs, veggies per meals and snacks (or calories per meal). I needed a little more guidance in that aspect.

Fitness trainer Jorge Cruise has helped 3 million cyberspace clients lose weight, and now he's headed for your bookshelf with the same goal in mind. In just eight minutes a day, says Cruise, you can drop two pounds of fat per week, change your shape, and gain muscle and energy. His secret formula: an inspirational "wake-up talk," followed by strength training two muscle groups per day, eating according to his "eating card" program, and keeping a journal. For exercise, Cruise presents a varied, 28-day program of illustrated exercises using dumbbells. Why the emphasis on strength training? While aerobics burns calories while you're exercising, adding muscle revs up fat burning at rest by increasing your metabolic rate. Every pound of muscle you gain burns an extra 50 calories per day. You'll look better and feel younger and more energetic, resulting in more activity, burning more calories, he says. Cruise's eating plan emphasizes "good" (omega) fats, complex carbohydrates, high-quality protein (low in saturated fat), and vegetables, with dairy, fruits, and "treats and cravings" in moderation. His "Eating Card System" gives you an allotment of portions from each of the food groups. If you're the kind who likes the regimentation of following a specific program every day, Cruise will get you moving, eating better, and losing weight. --Joan Price

It Works!.......2007-08-07
I purchased the book over 2 years ago and it collected dust on my bookshelf. Just a little over 3 weeks ago I decided to use the program. I have to say that IT WORKS! My clothes are much looser and I've lost 5lbs. give or take. The eating portion I'm tweaking but if I were to follow it precisely I'm sure I would've lost more. The book is worth the price and Jorge is very encouraging with the daily talks noted in the book. I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with losing weight!
very efficient.......2007-07-26
I have contemplated this book for about 2years, I hesitated to spend 12 dollars on yet another excercise plan that probably wouldn't work. I found the book on the bargain rack 2 1/2 weeks ago so I got it. I have not followed his eating plan, I was going to ease into that. Instead, I have cut back on carbs and tried to add more lean protein. I also allow myself one day per week to eat those things I was craving. This helps me stay on track the rest of the week. The excercise are fairly easy, I like the abilty to use different weights and the variety of muscle groups worked is great. By the end of the first week my husband said he thought I had lost weight, I said nah, it's only been a week. At the end of week 2 I had to agree that I lost at least 2 pounds. My goal is to lose 10 lbs. This is the first time that I have tried to loose weight and actually succeeded!
Very motivating!.......2007-07-13
I found this book on sale at a bookstore for $2.50. I had seen it before in my book club and it caught my interest. I bought the book...and read the entire book that evening! I did not realize how strength training can reshape your body. I was convinced! So, I took the book to work with me the next day and showed it to my best friend. I went back to the bookstore that night (a 60 minute drive) to buy the last copy for my friend so we could do this together. We made copies of the food cards and stapled them together (very similar to WW points trackers) and vowed to wake up 15 minutes earlier to exercise. We shared our love/hate relationship with Jorge daily. Several weeks after following the program, my mom told me that she could tell a difference in my arms--that they were more defined. My friend and I followed the program for several weeks--11 or 12. We both lost weight, but not the 2 pounds a week. Since Jorge, we have both aquired different jobs. It's funny though--when we talk, we still bring up Jorge. Our books have been leant to friends and although we do not daily follow his program anymore, we both think this is a very valuable book. The exercises are the best part. I now follow the WW plan for diet, but his exercises are really great! Super book! (I have 3 of Jorge's 8 Minutes books and believe this to be the best).
Great Exercise--I'll Pass on the Diet.......2007-06-28
I love the exercise plans in Jorge Cruise's books, but I really dislike the somewhat dishonest way the dieting aspect is presented: he says aerobics and dieting are out and adding lean muscle is in. Granted. I agree whole heartedly. But, he then proceeds to recommend a VERY low calorie diet. And, he goes on to say that your newly added muscle will be burning 2 lbs. per week. Yes, I agree: add that muscle back and you will rev up your metabolism and burn off the fat. That is why I bought his book in the first place. But, then why does he put us on a diet (the very thing he said doesn't work??). The diet alone is restrictive enough to cause the 2 lb. a week of weight loss, folks, without doing any exercise at all.
Having bashed the diet plan, I really do like the concept of adding simple strength training exercise on a almost daily basis, and certainly at least three times a week. I am not a big fan of cardio and the way it can't really reshape your body, but I do add 3 days of 20 minutes for heart health.
Bottom line: if you're looking for a way to add some simple, and effective exercise to your life, by all means I recommend Jorge Cruise's books. The theory is good. It is the very restrictive diet that I have a problem with especially in view of his blatant statement that diets don't work and diets are out. It seems that you are working at cross purposes here: trying to rev up the metabolism with added muscle while semi-starving the body enough to get it to go into starvation mode and slow down the whole process. I think the far better way to eat is to calculate the calories necessary to maintain your goal weight and start eating at that amount. For me, that would be around 1500 calories, based on doing almost no exercise. Whatever your goal weight, the calories to maintain it will be a reduction under what you are currently eating and will lead to weight loss, but will not be so restrictive as to cause your body to go into starvation mode. Lean Bodies has a good diet plan that has worked for me in the past. That plan starts women at 1500 calories a day and men at about 1800. It is a low fat diet recommending lean protein, some carbs and lots of veggies at each meal. For me, that plan, coupled with Cruise's exercise are a really sane approach to the diet/exercise dilemma.
i am pleased with this book.......2007-04-23
this book gives you a good plan to change your life and eat healthier and exercise daily. the exercises and eating plan are both pretty easy to follow and as long as you follow it, you do lose weight. i am pleased that i purchased this book and would recommend it to others.

Customer Reviews:
Very impactful. .......2007-02-23
Depending on the current state of you company's climate and/or culture, this book can provide some very poigniant insight as to how to manage yourself and your teams. The concepts and principles are dynamic, hard hitting, and thought provoking. I highly recommend this quick and easy read, if you presently find yourself in the midst of a cultural evolution.
Exactly what's wrong with modern management.......2006-12-08
This is perhaps the worst example I have encountered of terrible advice, wrapped in a package of nonsensical and even self-contradictory aphorisms. This is par for this sort of "book" (it's not a book, it's a pamphlet) - what is unusual is how violent the language of the book is... nothing like trodding over and destroying those who don't understand your vision for organization change. The book presents untestable hypotheses, uncited claims, and essentially no tools or mechanisms for actually doing the things they instruct you to do (not that anyone should do anything these authors suggest). If your organization is passing this book around, you should strongly consider whether this is an organization that values rational thought - and thus whether you should work there. Sad that you can't give negative stars - this book will hurt your organization.
Worse than Chinese Water Torture.......2004-02-27
If a fourth grader had written at this level I'd send them back to third grade. Follow up the poor writing with an approach which can only be described as derived from brainwashing techniques, and you come up with a book that is more painful to read than undergoing Chinese Water Torture. The writer bombards the reader with poorly worded rephrasings of the same thing, again and again. He throws the rephrasings at the reader multiple times. The author switches his words around and repeats the same premise over and over. Get the idea.
On TOP of this, the premises seem to go along the lines of:
Change is good.
Change must happen.
Promote Change.
If people don't like your change get rid of them.
There is no consideration given to analysis, progress, fixing actual problems. The upper level manager at my company who promoted this book also cost our company more than $31 Million because she was addicted to changing things. I call that sort of thing a Legacy change, as in "look at what a good job I did, I changed things." It promotes change over results. Change for change sake does not equal progress.
This book is even more painful than an Ayn Rand novel.
Book Description
Shows employees how they can avoid 15 basic mistakes that create major stress in the workplace. By all accounts, the pace of business will continue to accelerate in the years to come, and for many that means more stress-stress which will almost certainly affect job performance and satisfaction. This easy-to-read handbook explains the sources of stress and provides practical, usable tips for reducing it.
Customer Reviews:
Concise.......2003-03-18
I've been on both sides of reorganizations, and this book does HELP. It was especially very good advice when I was younger and just beginning to experience the change that all organizations must go through. I held on to my copy and still look at it now and then to remind myself that I shouldn't fight change, but take it as it comes and make the most of it.
Pragmatic Reality.......2003-01-31
I am an employee who appreciates reality. This book espouses the importance of personal accountability...for how we work, how we live, how we feel.
The challenge is in doing something right that does not come naturally; proactive rather than reactive. This book made me feel good about how much control I actually do have.
Following the axioms presented will help you step over some tripwires in the minefield of a work-a-day world in the throes of change.
Senior managers will love it, but employees will hate it.......2001-03-25
The tone and messages of the book are such that they will serve to demotivate, rather than inspire, employees. For example:
Message #1: You (the reader) are not senior management. Throughout the book, senior management is described as "the people at the top" and "they." The book immediately sets up a distinction between these two groups - top management, which is moving the company along in response to outside changes, and employees, who are resisting change at every turn.
Message #2: Change is scary, unrelenting, and you (the average person) are naturally not going to like it. And if you weren't scared about change going into the book, you will be after you read it. One of the opening paragraphs reads: "And if today's stress and tension aren't enough to create problems, all a person has to do is consider what the future holds. One close look at what's in store should be enough to worry anyone."
Message #3: You (the reader) are an idiot, and you will persistently resist change unless you wise up to the tips in this book. The book outlines 15 mistakes people usually make in dealing with change. It doesn't offer 15 good ideas for preventing stress due to change, but instead focuses on 15 things you'll probably do wrong unless, of course, you read this book.
On the whole, this book is too simplistic and supplies only minimal rationale for why an employee should change. If you want to get employees to be more open to change, to put their heart into their job, to be more supportive of the company's overall direction, then give them a book that will inspire them. Give them tips for how to be a happier person, both on the job and at home. Talk to them in a positive tone and not a negative one, as this book does. There are many books out there that can accomplish these goals, just not this one.
