4 out of 5 stars Terry and the Pirates - Great old stuff!.......2007-10-13

Terry ahd the Pirates is not quite as good as Bruce Canwell indicates in his introduction to this volume when he calls it, "argubaly the best.." (comic strip introduced in 1934.) After all, as he points out, that was the same year in which Flash Gordon and L'il Abner began. It's still an amazing comic strip. I wanted to give it 5 stars. But the reproduction quality kept me from doing that. The Sunday strips are too small, especially in the beginning of the book. When the logo changed,(Aug. 18, 1935) the reproduction improved greatly, as there were only 3 rows of pannels, instead of 3, plus a half length pannel running all the way across the top. It made enough difference that I now intend to buy future volumes in this collection, whereas before I got to this point, I didn't intend to. There's a lot of good in this strip. Caniff's art grows enormously from October, 1934 to the end of 1936. Howard Chaykin promises in his introduction that there is better art yet to come. The strip is also well written, with Terry and Pat moving rapidly from action scene to action scene. But it is Caniff's art that is the real strength of Terry and the Pirates.

5 out of 5 stars A genuine treat from beginning to end .......2007-10-06

Milton Caniff was one of the most popular and influential newspaper comic strip artists and storytellers of his day. Perhaps his most important and successful strip was "Terry and the Pirates" which began in 1934 and finally concluded some twelve years later. IDW Publishing has published the first volume of this outstanding series which includes more than 800 consecutive comic strips (black-and-white during the weekdays and in color for the Sunday papers) beginning with its 1934 debut and continuing through to the end of 1936 and comprising all of the strips for the series first two years. A whole new generation of readers will be introduced to young Terry lee, his adult pal Pat Ryn, their sidekick Connie, and an unforgettable array of brigands and bad guys including Captain Judas, Blaze, Burma, and the one-and-only Dragon Lady. Very strongly recommended for personal and community library collections, this debut "Terry and the Pirates" collection of high adventure on the China Seas is a genuine treat from beginning to end and will leave the reader looking eagerly toward the arrival of Volume 2!

3 out of 5 stars Low definition scans for the dailies.......2007-09-26

Fantastic stuff, beautiful thick volume, but the worst low-definition b/w print I ever seen in years! What a pity. I hope things come better in the next issues.

5 out of 5 stars Begining of a great reprint series.......2007-09-17

This is an excellent first volume to this comprehensive reprinting of the classic "Terry and the Pirates" series. I have wanted to read this series, but missed out on the previous reprint series done by NBM several years back (being a poor student at the time, I could not afford the multiple expensive volumes).

I hope the success of this series, along with the current reprint series on Peanuts, Dick Tracy, Popeye, Gasoline Alley, and Dennis the Menace will bode well for the upcoming Little Orphan Annie and Pogo series, and will lead to better reprints of other classic series.

1 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment.......2007-09-17

I'm a big Caniff's fan. I bought this book and I won't send it back. But I will surely not buy the following volumes.
There's no question that Milton Caniff was a true complete genius. His strip Terry and the Pirates is undoubtly one of the most outstanding artistic achievements in the literary and graphic arts of the XXth century.
But this edition just doesn't cut it.
Scanning and printing haven't been done with enough definition: The line art is unsharp and unworthy of such a smooth and inspired inker as Caniff.
The strips are reprinted too small. Especially the format of the Sunday Pages is ridiculously tiny. And graphically weird: 3 thin strips to a page, historically conceivable, but esthetically inappropriate. For a book which wants to be the definitive edition, it is pretty shocking.
The worst, yet: The art has been scanned very darkly, to the contrary of the NBM-Flying Buttress edition. The gray screens come out much too strong: You get Caniff's blacks, but his lights are gone! This printing is maybe 10% more accurate than the NBM-Flying Buttress scans, but the black & white balance ist at least 30% off... And offputing!
The extra-bonus materials are sparse and reproduced much too small. The introduction articles are totally superficial and uninteresting. The object in itself is much too big and to heavy to have an enjoyable and relaxed reading session.
Oh, please! Bring us back Denis Kitchen, Peter Poplaski, Shel Dorf and their Kitchen Sink re-editions!
In the meanwhile, try to find the (although not perfect either, but much more enjoyable) NBM-Flying Buttress edition.

Book Description

We hear the terms "steer clear of," "hit the deck," "don't rock the boat," and to "harbor a grudge" and give little thought to their origin. Left together on ships for months, and often for years, pirate crews developed expressions that made their way into common usage. Terms for things related to life at sea became idioms used by land lubbers, a term derived from the holes in the platforms surrounding the mast that allowed sailors to avoid climbing the rigging around the platforms. A lubber was someone who was very clumsy, so a land lubber is someone who knows nothing about sailing and rigging.

Centuries ago, men wore wigs of length denoting their wealth and importance. Soon, many naval captains, including Sir Henry Morgan and Captain Chaloner Ogle, who killed Black Bart Roberts, began to adopt the style. A law was passed in England declaring that only nobility, judges, and bishops could wear full-length wigs and so was born the term bigwig.

Reading through these words and phrases is an abbreviated trip through history, with lists of major naval mutinies, a summary of the slave trade, and even jokes. This dictionary is written to be entertaining as well as informative, to give a flavor of the interesting times from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries when pirates controlled many sea lanes. It also contains a treasure trove of factual information about life aboard the ship, important pirate haunts, and technical terms.

1 out of 5 stars very disappointed.......2007-09-16

I wanted this book for a long time and was very disappointed with it once I started reading. The problem, as other reviewers have mentioned, is the poor editing. It's not just a mistake here and there, it's every other page. Sometimes it's difficult to even understand what the author is attempting to say. I am very interested in pirates, so I was happy to find this book. But upon reading it, I decided it's definately best to page through before buying.

1 out of 5 stars Save yer gold!.......2007-08-28

Do not buy this book!
I have an extensive nautical library and have done more than my share of research on the sea in general and pirates in particular. This book is so horribly written and filled to the brim with typos that I cannot recommend it to anyone. There are out and out errors which do not give me any faith at all in the author; the things I am not sure about, I simply cannot be sure about. That this author has fourteen other books in print scares me; the tide of typos could sink a battleship. I am not sure whether I will return this book for a refund, or set fire to it; the latter would be far more rewarding.

4 out of 5 stars Well it is a Pirate book...........2007-03-31

As many other reviewers have mentioned, there is many grammatical errors in this book, but maybe it was intentional! This is a "Pirate Dictionary" and Pirates were not well known for their spelling or alphabetizing skills. I think it was possibly edited this way on purpose, although it can be annoying. A must have for any Pirate.

4 out of 5 stars Poorly edited but informative .......2007-03-23

It's true that this book was not edited very well; there are countless grammar errors, alphabatizing errors, and in some cases, spelling errors. But despite these flaws, The Pirate Dictionary is put together well and very informative if you don't mind the occasional text mistake or two.

4 out of 5 stars A must-have for pirate fans.......2007-01-20

I'm a big fan of pirate history and pirate movies and books, but oftentimes find myself confused with some of the terms. This book was definitely able to equip me with the knowledge I need to understand the "language of pirates." Absolutely bursting with information, the only unlikeable thing I found about this book was the fact that it was edited terribly. Some words weren't alphabetized and in a few cases words were often repeated in succession such as in the Port Royal section. However, if you want a book for good information and don't mind the occasional grammar or spelling error, I'd reccomend this book to any pirate fan out there.

Book Description

Pirate Black Bart Roberts roamed the Atlantic from age thirteen in 1695 until his death in an ambush by the Royal Navy off Cape Lopez on the Guinea coast in 1722. Those years, coinciding with the Golden Age of Piracy, are chronicled here in excerpts from first-hand accounts and court documents, with vintage illustrations and maps, and the superb historical analysis of Terry Breverton.

Though more famous pirates Blackbeard and Captain Kidd serve as the greater icons of piracy, during their lifetimes of activity they took only thirty vessels between them, compared to Black Bart's more than four hundred. Today's image of a pirate includes a drunken sway within the swashbuckling, and few would argue that many a crew and captain of the era were prodigious drunkards. Again, Black Bart Roberts breaks the mold. Not only was he a Christian who ordered his musicians to play hymns each Sunday, he was also famous among his seagoing contemporaries for his abstention from alcohol. Tall for the time, and dressed head to toe in red silk, Black Bart was a striking figure whom maritime history will not soon forget.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or your money mateys!.......2006-07-20

First of all, the last reviewer pretty much just repeated the book description that's printed above, and the one on the book's back cover. Second of all, the book doesn't even get to Black Bart until page 64! Until then, it's about Captain Howell Davis, and several other captains. Why, I have no idea! I've always loved pirate movies, and pirate stories, so I thought it would be fun to get a few books, and read up on the old scallywags. Now I know we aren't supposed to like pirates. Afterall, they stole, killed, and raped among other things...all bad. But even knowing all this, most of us are very intrigued by them. Perhaps because they're dangerous and unpredictable, and they play by their own rules. Because pirates are so charasmatic and exciting, I didn't think it was possible for a pirate book to be boring, but this one is! I'm sure the author is a nice man, and I'm sure he tried hard, but this book is hard to follow, and completely lacking in excitement and good old fashioned story telling. This reads like a narrative time line, and a very confusing one at that. The first two chapters leading up to Black Bart are incredibly hard to get through, so by the time you finally do get to him, you're so confused and exhausted, that you really don't care anymore. I've read other pirate books, and it is possible to give facts, be descriptive, and also entertain at the same time. This book bored and frustrated me. I was ready to feel like I was in Black Bart's boots from beginning to end, for all the excitment and stories, but that never happened. I suggest you do yourself a favor and look up 'Black Bart' and see what other books are out there. But please, skip this one. It was so bad, I didn't even get through the whole thing.I'm sending my copy back for a refund/credit.

5 out of 5 stars 'Must' reading for any interested in pirates.......2004-07-14

Everyone's heard of pirates Captain Kidd and Blackbeard - but history buffs may be amazed to learn these famous pirates only took about thirty ships between them, whereas Black Bart Roberts alone took more than four hundred ships in a brief period of time. Terry Breverton's Black Bart Roberts is 'must' reading for any interested in pirates and American nautical history: first-hand accounts, court documents, and maps accompany a fascinating bit of piratical history on the high seas.

Book Description

The definitive biography of the legendary creator of Terry and the Pirates and Steve Canyon.

Milton Caniff was one of the most influential American cartoonists of the 20th century. He rose to prominence during World War II when he took the characters in his Terry and the Pirates strip into the war. The trenchant pragmatic patriotism of the strip warmed the hearts and steeled nerves on the home front as well as the battlefront (one of his strips was read into the Congressional Record.) He went on to create Steve Canyon, which was syndicated from 1947 to Caniff's death in 1988.

Milton Caniff, Terry and the Pirates, and Steve Canyon: Meanwhile… traces Caniff's life from the cradle to the grave, marking the milestones in the development of the comic strip that Caniff established. Caniff reshaped the medium and set standards by which all storytelling strips were subsequently judged. Although Caniff adapted to changing fashions, he is best known for innovations such as his impressionistic chiaroscuro drawing style that suggested reality economically with shadow rather than with detail; creating many colorful characters, including the stalwart Pat Ryan from Terry and the Pirates, Burma the shady lady, and, most memorable of all, the Dragon Lady, a beautiful but mysteriously menacing pirate queen who turned Chinese patriot during the War; and enhancing the melodrama of adventure strips by making character development integral to the action-packed plots.

While Milton Caniff provides a biography of Caniff and analyzes his storytelling techniques, it also serves as a history of the medium and reveals the inner workings of the syndicate business (at which Caniff was as expert as he was at cartooning). The book traces Caniff's life from the cradle to the grave, and examines the artistic innovations and work routines of a nationally distributed cartoonist whose career was central the development of the artform, marking along the way the milestones in the development of comic strip artistry that Caniff established. The book charts Caniff's rise to fame and fortune through artistic excellence and patriotic fervor when the characters in his comic strip Terry and the Pirates entered World War II, then recounts the decline of his strip Steve Canyon's popularity (whose protagonist served as an unofficial spokesman for the U.S. Air Force from the Korean War until the end of the strip in 1988) when the same brand of patriotism that had inspired admiration during World War II provoked protest during Vietnam, a bittersweet conclusion to a career spent producing a daily feature for 55 years, a record that would stand for a generation.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any student, reader or fan of the comics medium........2007-08-25

I've been waiting for R.C. Harvey to publish his biography of Milt Caniff ever since he casually mentioned it in the pages of his fine book, "The Art of the Funnies", over ten years ago. The resulting book is not only one of the finest comics oriented biographies but it's a great book in and of itself. I have to admit that after it arrived I was a little intimidated by it. It is after all a massive door stopper of a book and I left it sitting on my desk for a week before I finally cracked it open and began reading it in earnest. Despite its considerable length the pages flew by and I was soon at the end with the distinct feeling of disapointment at the prospect that it was over. Harvey literally transports his readers to an earlier age when there was no TV, no cable, no satelite, no computers and no internet. The general public got their entertainment by means of reading books and magazines, going to the movies, listening to the radio and reading the comics page in the local paper. The Great Depression was battering the country and war clouds were starting to appear over the skies of Eurpope and Asia. Out of those troubled times Milton Caniff became one of the greatest and most widely read storytellers of the age. This is his story and Harvey succeeds in telling it well.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent tribute to a cartooning legend.......2007-07-20

I've just received my book from Amazon yesterday, so I haven't been able to complete it as yet, but upon opening the box I was staggered by the sheer size of the volume. Very few books fulfill the promise of their covers; "Meanwhile" does just that, and more. Paging through the contents I was pleased at the abundance of art included from all stages of Mr. Caniff's career. Milt Caniff's exciting brushwork and facility at crafting mesmerizing stories have always held me spellbound, and been an inspiration to me for many years in my career as an artist.

Mr. Harvey has done the magical; fleshing out the biography of an icon of the golden era of comic strips and not simply chronicling Mr. Caniff's life, but also taking us behind the scenes and into Milt's mind. It's all here: How Milt worked, what inspired him, the real people who were the models for his characters, the real world of syndicated comic strips.

Folks, this is as close to the excitement of time travel as you'll ever get, a reminder of why people waited with eagerness for the daily paper to drop upon their front doorstep in the years before DVDs and home entertainment centers so that they could catch the latest installment of their favorite newsprint heroes. As a previous reviewer so aptly stated, this is an artform that has fallen by the wayside and been forgotten. Today's comics are disposable jokes, akin to the old Joe Bazooka throwaways inside the bubblegum wrappers.

This book contains treasure, and would be worth the price of admission at twice its cost. There is a reason why Milton Caniff was called the "Rembrandt of the Comic Strip", and the story is inside "Meanwhile".

And one more thing in closing. Milt did this all by himself. No assistants to ink his pencils, no "factory" of interns to rubberstamp the same old hash every week, it was just Milt Caniff and his imagination and brushes and ink-stained hands.

5 out of 5 stars More than great biography--.......2007-07-18

--"Meanwhile" is an examination of an entire art form that sadly has fallen, not just out of favor, but by the wayside entirely.

R.C. Harvey, one of the most well-respected authorities on the history of the newspaper comic strip has written the definitive, even monumental, study of Milton Caniff and his work.

Actor Robert Culp referred to Milton Caniff as "immortal" and after reading this fascinating volume, you can understand why.

Mr. Caniff, if he didn't invent the adventure newspaper strip, certainly refined and defined the parameters for generations afterwards.

Not just an accomplished artist, Mr. Caniff was also a consummate story-teller. His influence can still be seen in many forms of media, nearly twenty years after his death.

Through Mr. Harvey's biography (he began writing it before Mr. Caniff passed away), the reader gets to know Milton Caniff as an unassuming workaholic who fit the classic mold of American patriot.

The sections devoted to Terry and the Pirates (and his most iconic creation, Lai Choi San, The Dragon Lady) and Steve Canyon are very illuminating, particularly to students of comic-strip art.

It's hard to realize now the impact the newspaper comic-strip had on the American culture from the 1930s through the 1950s, and Mr. Caniff's work was always held as the standard by which all others strived to attain.

"Meanwhile" is a great book. It's one of the few that I have read in the last few years that I have referred back to within days of finishing it.

This is a classic book about a classic artist whose contributions to American culture need to be rediscovered and celebrated.

Thank you, Mr. Harvey.

4 out of 5 stars Another highly enjoyable cartoon adventure .......2005-05-09

This collection of newspaper comic strips form the February - July 1940 continuity. In the previous episode Pat Ryan and April Kane took refuge in the compound of arms smuggler Cap'n Blaze, whose embittered daughter wove a network of intrigue around them. Cheery Blaze plans to betray them all to local warlord Singh Singh but it's cross and double cross when "invader" troops (it was then politically incorrect to refer directly to the Japanese invasion of China) appear. Heiress and humanitarian aid worker Raven Sherman is introduced, only to become a target of the beautiful and mysterious Hu Shee. Dude Hennick, pilot and old friend of Pat's, is manipulated in helping Terry and the gang pursue the two women.

Episode 11 of this classic comic strip is another highly enjoyable adventure with superb plotting, amusing characterization, and excellent art. Milton Caniff, the most influential artist of the comic strip, is at the top of his form. Highly recommended!

Volume 7 of the Flying Buttress classics library reprints the April 1938 - September 1938 continuity.

After defeating the Warlord Klang in the previous episode the Dragon Lady gave Terry, his servant Connie, and the beautiful Burma a car to drive to Hong Kong. On the way they pick up a mysterious child with a moneybelt, and wind up in a city besieged by "the invader" (it was then politically incorrect to refer directly to Japan's invasion of China!) Cheerful Hunter Yurk brings the quartet to his surprisingly un-shelled home, where they are surprised to run into Pat Ryan and Big Stoop in Yurk's secret dungeon. The gang manage to reunite the mystery child with her wealthy father, Mr. Smythe-Heatherstone. He is the target of fortune-hunter Drusilla Crail, who loses the cat fight when she rubs Burma the wrong way. Drusilla's revenge turns a yachting expedition into yet another pirate cruise.

1 out of 5 stars Appalling Beginning to Great Comic Strip.......2005-05-10

This is episode 1 of Flying Buttress' collection of the classic comic strip. This was not Caniff's first strip but the artwork is pretty crude and there isn't much sign of what was to come later. Characters are absurdly stereotypical and the plot lurches along in complete implausibility. Note that the color Sunday pages, which were initially a seperate continuity, are not included in this volume.

Terry is a wide-awake American boy whose grandfather left him a map of an abandoned mine in China. Together with two-fisted journalist Pat Ryan, the beautiful Dale Scott, her crusty boatman father Pops, and George Webster "Connie" Confucius, Terry sails for adventure into a China that was pretty obviously as unknown to the writer/artist as it was to his readers. In the initial story arc Poppy Joe, a local hoodlum, pursues the quintet in the hopes of stealing the mine - but the mine turns out to be a treasure hoard guarded by some extremely imaginatively rendered Chinese. Next Terry runs into wealthy heiress Normandie Drake. Her millionaire father Chauncy hires Pat, Terry, and Connie on a cruise that is once again interrupted by a pirate plot.

5 out of 5 stars Great, but doesn't have the famous Corkin speech.......2005-05-10

Although marked "1943," volume 17 of the Flying Buttress classics library is the November 1942 - May 1943 continuity.

Collectors beware! This sequence does NOT contain the famous October 17 Sunday episode in which Corkin delivers the Congressionally-recognized "Flight Officer" speech, which is to be found in the next album, "Taffy at War" (volume 18).

Brought to a secret Japanese airbase by beautiful Axis spy Rouge in the previous episode, Terry Lee now aids U.S. paratroopers as they assault the base. Meanwhile USAAF pilot Corkin, supporting the raid, is shot down and must manage to survive the wiles of BOTH Rouge and a downed Japanese pilot. Eventually returning to base he is reunited with his galpal, army nurse Taffy Tucker. Terry's spying for the Kuomintang government has been more or less successful so he is rewarded with a commission as an air force cadet. Flip Corkin takes him under his wing but meanwhile Taffy is kidnapped by Rouge who gives her a near-fatal dose of morphine. Left for dead, her mindless body is found by Connie and Big Stoop, who bring her to Pat Ryan and Texan Joss Goode, USMC.

Excellent drama-adventure from "The Rembrandt of the comic strip."
