Book Description

It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

Marvelous use of language. Imaginative formating. Death is a terrific character. Old subject matter looked at in an inventive way.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars reserved.......2007-10-17

I read maybe one book a year that would deserve five stars...and I read a lot of books. This book ranks right up with Lonesome Dove, Life of Pi, and Left Hand of Darkness as one that will transcend genre and time to become one that is read over and over.
What is particularly striking is Zusak's very accurate descriptions of a very difficult place in history, and the emotional makeup of the people who went through it. He has layered this with contemporary sensibility by using Death as an omniscient narrator. At the beginning of the book, I was somewhat put off by this as he uses the same visual cues as Terry Pratchett in putting the words of Death in boldface, but eventually it became clear that the conceit was necessary and serves as a distancing device. If the story had been told as a first person narrative from one of the main characters, or even from multiple viewpoints, it would have been too sentimental. As it is, it unflinchingly shows tragedy and brutality, kindness and humor, leavened with just enough irony to make it one of the great novels.
My 95 year old aunt is also an avid book lover, and even more particular. Luckily this book has made it easy to pick out her Christmas present. My only hesitation in buying it for her in audiobook form is that this book relies on its physical presence almost as much as a graphic novel. It would take a very skillful reading to put this across.

5 out of 5 stars A truly remarkable book.......2007-10-15

"A human doesn't have a heart like mine. The human heart is a line, whereas my own is a circle, and I have the endless ability to be in the right place at the right time. The consequence of this is that I'm always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both."

So muses the narrator of Markus Zusak's powerful and moving bestselling novel of 2006, THE BOOK THIEF, which is now out in paperback. As you might guess, this is no ordinary narrator. The contemplative first person guiding you through this book is Death, an at-once fitting and ironic vanguard for a tale that both celebrates the power of words and agonizes over the consequences of their use.

Set against the tragedy-stained canvas of World War II, Death tells the story of young Liesel Meminger (the eponymous book thief) growing up in Nazi Germany under the watchful eye of a staunch foster mother and kindly foster father who teaches her to read. She attends meetings of the BDM, a youth group aimed at indoctrinating young girls into Hitler's ideology. She plays soccer with the boys on her street, holding her own in any disputes that arise. And all the while, dreams of her dead brother haunt and goad her into a fascination with reading and words that inevitably leads to her life of crime.

As she settles into her new home, Liesel befriends Rudy Steiner, a boy her age who becomes known for his love of Olympic runner Jesse Owens (Rudy paints himself black and runs through the town's streets). Together, they navigate the confusing world set before them by the adults in their lives and attempt to come to terms with the racism prevalent in their homeland's current political state. Liesel also makes the acquaintance of the mayor's wife, whose pristine library astounds Liesel and becomes an open playground for Liesel's "thievery."

It is a meeting with Max Vandenburg, a 24-year-old Jewish man being hidden in Liesel's basement by her compassionate foster parents, that alters the course of Liesel's life. Max, too, is haunted by nightmares of a family he lost in the harrowing aftermath of Kristallnacht. Together, Max and Liesel discover a shared love of words that leads to a decisive understanding about the role words play in both bravery and cowardice. Each, in their own way, sets out to use this knowledge to shape the world around them.

While other writers have employed Death as a narrator, Zusak makes his own indelible mark on the technique in the dimensions he gives to the character. Death is simultaneously dispassionate about his work and the impact it can have while striving to understand humanity's resilience. Death boasts an omniscience of what will happen in life but also a naivety about what can happen in the human heart.

In the ultimate expression of his dichotomous theme, Zusak creates a touching love letter to books and writing, framed in arguably the most horrific period in human history. But his greatest triumph is delivering a reminder that no writer enters this world quietly. Writers are born of eruptions and detonations, and the truly exceptional ones, like Zusak, continue to channel these explosive energies to craft a truly remarkable book that will be admired for generations.

5 out of 5 stars A New View on a Bad Time.......2007-10-14

The Book Thief was one of my first ventures from my warn cocoon of fantasy adventure novels. I must say I was left... amazed.

Markus Zusak manages to weave a beautiful story with the not-quite-real settings and characters. But manages to put them into terribly real situations with the nitty gritty of life.

The story tells of the holocaust from a different perspective. Whereas we find most books such as The Diary of Anna Frank telling the story from inside the Ghettos and concentration camps, this book shifts your view 180 degrees. Looking at the situation from the other way around. Seeing as I've grown up in Israel, this is a view very rarely acknowledged.

The storytelling is flowing and engrossing. It takes about 50 pages to take off, but when it does. You get caught in the slipstream and are just dragged from page to page.

I recomended this book to many people and have passed it around to my family, people from work... Everyone thought the same thing - 5 stars!

Book Description

EXCUSE ME, YOUR LIFE IS WAITING: THE ASTONISHING POWER OF FEELINGS picks up where most positive thinking books have left off, giving us the rather startling new information that every moment of our lives is governed by our EMOTIONS, not by luck, or hard work, or circumstance, or good thoughts, or visualization.

The material in EXCUSE ME has never been told before, because it was never known before, and clarifies why the majority of us have lived with all-too-empty bank accounts, tough relationships, failing health, and often spiritually unfulfilling lives.

In her upbeat, humorous, and somewhat irreverent style, author Lynn Grabhorn (who increased her income 830% in one year using these principles) shows us how, with this astonishing new data, to turn it all around and create the kind of life we've always dreamed of...not ten years from now, but RIGHT NOW.

5 out of 5 stars its true...........2007-10-13

I have just finished this book it was roaming around my apartment for 2 months, I picked up the book one day while I was feeling as low as possible about my current circumstances, by the time I fifnished reading this book not only did I feel much, much better but amazing things had started to happen for me.... It has truly changed my life. I had always heard of the law of attration but never really understood it until I read this book, I am now hooked and want to learn everything I can about the subject. I have told everyone I know and they are now interested in following this amazing gift. Please be clear that My faith in GOD has not changed and I truly beleive in the higher powers that are far greater than us, this is just something for me to become a better and happier "me".

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining book about the power of feelings.......2007-10-09

I read this book a while back and found it to be of great value to me. As other reviewers have pointed out, it perhaps could have benefited from some additional editing, but in my view it's the raw content that's key as opposed to focusing too much on the mechanics of the writing. I really liked Lynn's sense of humor, and her passion for the topic was obvious throughout the book. Was it repetitive in places? Sure, but many books in the personal and personal growth categories are like this. If the message is solid I don't see a problem with hearing it a few times within the context of the work. Because it's both informative and entertaining, in my own book I've included "Excuse Me..." as a "must read" for anyone on the path of spiritual growth.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST.......2007-10-04

I have spent an entire year devouring books on the Spiritual Laws of the Universe, you name it, ive read it. I am finally understanding the concepts now and my life feels great. I started with This book "Excuse me your life is waiting" then went on the read EVERYTHING (thanks to the recommended reading list on the back page of The Attractor Factor, thanks Joe!!) including many FANTASTIC Authors including Abraham/Hicks, Wayne Dyer, Florence Scovel-Shinn, Ghalil,Mike Dooley. and many many others, and the thing is Lynn gives techniques to incorporate with what All of these Great Great people are teaching. We do have to RAISE OUR VIBRATION, We have to FEEL GOOD. Postitive thoughts/images/feelings will GIVE US positive events/things in our lives. The thing is Lynn gives us WONDERFUL Techniques to use, I have found myself now going back to this book and reading it again and just LOVING it, it is a must must must read (and practice) to compliment your other readings. GOD BLESS YOU LYNN.

3 out of 5 stars Law of Attraction does not work.......2007-10-01

I absolutely love this book, I have read it several times but the entire premise is flawed.

In chapter six she writes that she "hired a salesperson that was more into lack than I was (naturally; that was all I could attract)" and at the bottom of the same page she writes "It was somewhere right around that emotional low when a bunch of my all-too-enthusiastic friends began insisting I look into this material they had gotten hold of about the Law of Attraction".

Those two sentences are contradictory. If the only thing that she could attract was someone focusing on lack, how would it be possible for her to attract her friends that were focusing on abundance. If the Law of Attraction were a law of the universe, as she states, either she would attract one but not the other. She can't have both.

While I love her story and the inspiration of how things can be turned around in one's life at the drop of a hat, I love the explanation that conditions and circumstances are unimportant, and I have no doubt that her experiences were true and that the "suit of well being" where nothing can harm you is possible, I cannot believe that it came about by using the Law of Attraction. It would have been violated for her to get the information to her in the first place.

I believe that what happened was that the Expanded Self, as she calls, just got tired of playing with the situation that it had created and just created a totally different scenario, only it used the Law of Attraction as an excuse to do so, and make her think that the Law of Attraction was responsible for her turnaround when it has no value whatsoever.

5 out of 5 stars A Life-changing Book.......2007-08-30

Once in a few years you come across a book which has a life-changing impact. This is one of them. The changes in my life as a result of reading it are profound. A few months after reading the book, I am still implementing the ideas and manifesting amazing results. In the last twenty or more years I have read an enormous amount of self-help books, many of them dealt with Reality Creation. This books most definitely gets the first prize. If, like me, you have been reading many books and still not experiencing any significant changes in your reality, this book is the biggest present you could give yourself. Buy it and watch the miracles come marching into your life.

This book is by far the best I've read regarding Special Education law and how to successfully advocate for your child within the school system. It shows you how to level the playing field and become an equal and effective member of the IEP team. The commentary provided by the authors is invaluable and something you'd probably pay top dollar for if you had to hire your own attorney. We as parents can be effective advocates. "From Emotions to Advocacy" is the one tool in your box you can't do without.

5 out of 5 stars From Emotions to Advocacy.......2007-03-28

I've been involved in advocating for my special needs son for 14 years and this is the BEST book I've ever read on the subject. A real "how-to." I just walked away from an IEP meeting with MORE than I asked for and it all happened in less than an hour. I was SO prepared. In particular, the chapter on the Rule of Adverse Assumptions helped me prepare. Thanks to this book, I had the confidence and the information that allowed me to effectively go to bat for our son. I'm using FETA in a parent training class I'm conducting now and it's SO helpful. From Emotions to Advocacy is a real treasure and should be the bible for every parent of a special needs child.

Seven Secrets to a Successful Divorce

5 out of 5 stars Important book, along with..........2006-01-04

Divorce is one of the most grueling experiences anyone can go through, and this book is a great guide for easing the challenges. The book is packed with information on the legal and emotional issues that are likely to arise -- and how to deal with them. The topics span the board, from making the initial decision, to preparing for trial, to how to talk with the kids about it all.

THe authors have a section on negotiating with your spouse, and I think that that is essential. They mention the work of Harvard's Roger Fisher, who just published a new book that you don't want to miss if you're dealing with divorce. The book is 'Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as you Negotiate.' (The chapters on autonomy and appreciation struck a chord with me and offered great advice.)

3 out of 5 stars Very Informative, but deceptively biased.......2005-07-03

After reading many, many studies on the subject of divorce, support and custody, and also personally being a single father for 13 years with sole custody of 3 children and also being a non-custodial parent of one younger child I feel I can comment objectively on this book.

First off, it is clearly very well written, covers almost all aspects of its subject and uniquely combines views from an emotional point of view as well as legal point of view. It also strives to be unbiased and provide clear representation of both parents. I do recommend this book but do so with one caveat (hence my rating of 3 stars rather than 5).

The book is riddled with hidden biases in favor of Mom rather than Dad and the reader should be cognizant of that. Also, it is not clear that all aspects of studies are clearly represented. i.e., both sides. The tricky thing is that both sides are mentioned but even when there is a preponderance of studies favoring one side, it seems the authors may lean towards the other side. A fairer presentation of studies supporting both sides would be really beneficial (particularly on child custody, visitation, overnights, bonding, etc.). Many of the studies are represented in summary form and as such remove a lot of important context.

A good example of a hidden bias:

"The Paradox requires that parents take into careful consideration how well their children are able to tolerate separation from their mother, the child's temperament, and the strength of the father-child bond prior to divorce, and weigh all this against the likelihood of the father staying in the child's life...." Page 203 - determining custody arrangements.

This seems like a very objective statement but upon closer examination it is clear that the authors are concerned with whether the child(ren) can tolerate separation from mom but never question whether or not the child(ren) can handle the separation from dad or what that impact might be. In addition, it questions the father-child bond but never suggestions that the mother-child bond should be evaluated as well in such a determination. The phrase ends with us weighing all of this against whether or not it is likely that dad will stay in the picture - again, what about mom. Studies are increasingly showing that even when mom has full custody of her children she can be less than a model parent for a variety of reasons.

Here's another:

"The amount of time between father and child is important because it facilitates a closer parent child relationship. But time does not automatically equal closeness. The quality of time spent and the level of involvement .... are ... more important." Also Page 203 - determining custody arrangements.

Again - sounds objective enough but actually why is this represented only in terms of dad. Isn't this statement true for moms as well? Phrased as written there is an assumption that mother time does equal closeness and that it is automatically quality otherwise why point this out only for fathers during a discussion on custody which should be gender neutral. If the term was written with parent in place of father then it would be truly objective. As written it supports the notion that moms are custodial parents and dads are visitors - and not to worry about the amount of time dads spend - but worry about the quality of time they spend. So to be fair, don't worry about the time mom spends with the children, just the quality of time she spends - thereby freeing up large amounts of time for dad and children.

These are only 2 examples but please read this book with caution, such biases are sprinkled all through out the book (perhaps because the authors are both moms) and amongst a backdrop of authority, general objectivity and mastery of the subject matter which makes them all the more dangerous.

5 out of 5 stars The DEFINITIVE Divorce Guidebook.......2005-04-04

"Your Marriage Advisor: A Lawyer and Psychologist Guide You Through the Emotional Landscape of Divorce" by Diane Mercer and Marsha Klein Pruitt is arguably the most respectable and comprehensive guidebook on Divorce out there in the market place. The co-authored divorce guide, written by a divorce mediator and a research scientist in child study, takes you on an informative and rational ride through the entire divorce process, both the legal and psychological aspects of it. Imbued with positive energy, the authors breathed a much needed breeze of fresh air in an area where bickering and revenge is rife, highlighting that "the best strategy is to take care of yourself and your family, especially your children...this is truly your mantra".

Complete with case studies and extensive discussion from the A-Z of all that you need to know on the divorce procedure/psyche, the book is well-balanced where the authors weighed the pros and cons of oft-repeated tactics, not least stressing ad nauseam that retaliation and lying to get your way as non-viable options. It is one of those rare self-help books where the humanity and sterling character of the authors shined through as readers are constantly reminded how divorce is a no-win scenario to all and how one should best move on from the unpalatable situation in one piece. This book is a gem amidst the universe of divorce guides advocating revenge, male/female bashing and dirty tricks. Equipped with knowledge from this book, readers could save their sanity and their children's, not least money on oftentimes deficient advice from attorneys who have their own agendas to meet. This book is good place to start when confronted by the "D" word and is placed right on top of the priority must-read list if you have just time for one.

From the time he was a small puff, the cloud protagonist of Christoph Niemann's The Police Cloud has dreamed of becoming a police officer. With some pull from a helicopter friend, the cloud gets his wish and dons the coveted big blue hat. He starts his first day of work with great enthusiasm. Unfortunately, some folks just aren't cut out to be defenders of the law. The well-meaning clouds blunders one assignment after another, obscuring the vision and light of everyone he tries to help. Alas! Is there no profession just right for this good-hearted cloud?

In his first picture book, New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, and New York Times illustrator Christoph Niemann captures the oh-so-ardent wish power of childhood, and sweetly demonstrates the fact that although everyone can't do everything, everyone can do something. Niemann's bold, striking illustrations will appeal to readers of all ages, especially the very youngest. --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

In this funny and tender picture book for the youngest child, a fluffy cloud gets a job (with the help of his friend the police helicopter) as a police officer. But no matter how hard he tries, the qualities that make him a cloud seem to get in the way of his duties. He blocks the sun at the park instead of helping people and obscures traffic at an intersection instead of directing it. Upset, the cloud starts to cry. And it's his streaming tears—which inadvertently put out a fire in a burning building—that lead him to his true calling in life: as a firefighter!

5 out of 5 stars sweet book with great illustrations.......2007-08-07

Police Cloud is a sweet book with fantastic colors and pictures. Both boys and girls will love this book. The cloud's friend, helicopter, helps get him a job as a police cloud- his dream come true. He tries and tries, but realizes he's not cut out for the job. His true calling is revealed at the end of the book and kids can't help but cheer for him.

Between the pictures and plot, you will not tire of reading this cute story.

My 4 year old loves the story about the cloud who wants to be a police officer. He especially likes when the cars crash because the cloud blocks everybody's field of vision (typical boy). It did take a couple of readings for him to grasp why the cloud was not successful as a police officer, but he was readily able to understand why being a fireman was a much better alternative.

5 out of 5 stars a book both you and your little ones will love!.......2007-03-13

THE POLICE CLOUD is a huge hit in our house, we've been reading it almost every night and for at least 10 minutes at a pop, pretty amazing considering the typical attention span of a not-quite two year old. And unlike my son's previous favorite, a book of cars/trucks/boats/etc which I finally had to hide because I couldn't stand having to read it night after night after night, I highly recommend this one as a book both kids AND parents will enjoy!

It's so charming, sweet and smart and full of great details both visual -- the illustration of the angry parkgoers makes me laugh out loud every time -- and in the writing itself. My son loves pointing out the cloud's police hat, the helicopter, the part where the thief gets away (he yells "stop!" and points his finger at the burglar), the crash at the intersection ("oh no!"), the part where the cloud gets sad ("cloud crying!"), of course the arrival of the fire truck, and then the ending, with the smiling cloud ("cloud happy!"). He even loves the back cover, which he keeps flipping upside down (to make the overturned truck become right side up) and back again, over and over and over, laughing and exclaiming all the while. He is smitten, and so am I.

This is our new favorite, hands down, and will be our standard birthday party gift for the under six set for a while to come.

Product Description

In Feel it Real we are taken on an emotional journey. A journey into the feeling place of already having all our desires. Denise Coates, a personal coach and filmmaker, after years of working and playing with clients and after having success in her own life, has refined her teachings on manifesting desires by getting into the feeling place of already having it all. Through gratitude exercises, visualizing exercises, etc., Denise helps us to feel the exact feelings we would have if our desires were already fulfilled and this attracts the outer experiences that match those feelings. All we really want from our desires are the feelings we will have once we get them. Feel it Real is like an emotional recipe book that helps us to find and hold the vibrational/emotional notes of already having our desires. Happiness is a state of mind and in this book, Denise Coates shows us the power emotional focus plays in creating happiness and that through the Law of Attraction we attract more of whatever we're thinking and feeling. The book is a hands on workbook with many games, exercises, and processes to get the reader to choose emotions and vibrations that help them to easily attract in all their desires. This book is meant to be fun, because fun is a very attractive vibration!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-06-13

I love it! :@) I buy every Law of Attraction book I can get my hands on and this one is refreshing and FUN! THis book focuses on the most important thing........attracting through FEELINGS! Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it! Highly recommended........2007-05-28

Feel It Real is a wonderful book. The ideas on Law of Attraction presented are easy to understand, uplifting, and empowering, and the games in the second section of the book provide a practical, fun way to practice the Law of Attraction to obtain quick manifestation results. I particularly loved the focus on intuition and creativity, and on the healthy role of emotions to well-being.

Feel It Real opens one's eyes to a fresh view of the world. Anything is possible and you can make it so!

5 out of 5 stars Simple, Clear and FUN!!.......2007-02-19

Denise Coates bring the topic of LOA into practice the same way that a koan does: it bring you right up to YOU, using your own playful mind to lead you to an understanding of the dynamics of emotional vibration. As Abraham-hicks introduced the Emotional Guidance system, this author shows us how to make a game of finding our Joy, allowing us to "be easy with it all". This is a must have for your library.

5 out of 5 stars great book, fantastic tool!.......2007-02-17

Got Feel it Real last year and read it in one go, it was funny, entertaining and intelligent. Eventually a Law of Attraction workbook! I had enough of theory, I wanted to apply these ideas. The games are cool and easy to work and bring instant results. This is a very good supplement to any Abraham-Hicks or LOA material. Hope she keeps on publishing her brilliant ideas. Buy it now and buy one for your little sister too.

4 out of 5 stars A must-have for your personal library!.......2006-10-19

I want to HIGHLY recommend Feel It Real! There are a ton of exercises in the first half of the book, and a bunch of games listed in the second half of the book.

You might be tempted to read through the exercises and do them later, but they build upon each other, so don't read too far ahead or you'll just have to go back to do the exercises. And I *highly* recommend doing them, too. The value of this book is in the exercises you do, uncovering and starting to change/ changing your beliefs.

Some of the games are variations of other games/exercises you may have seen, but that may be more "user friendly" for you. For example, Abraham (channeled through Esther Hicks) has a game called "Rampage of Appreciation" (or something similar), that I've never been able to *get*, really. Denise has a game called 10 in 1, and I play this game all day! Appreciating 10 things about 1 subject (sometimes I'm trying really hard to find 10 things, sometimes I've got way more than 10) really leaves me "vibing high"... then I start a 10 in 1 for something else!

You'll keep coming back to this book to do the exercises on other desires, too - Denise has you working on three desires from the beginning of the book, but you'll think of so many other things that you'll want to play (not work :-) ) on.

I would've given this book 4 1/2 stars if I could have. Why not 5? There are only two things I'd change about the book.

The first is the physical set-up. I think it would work much better as a spiral bound book, so that it could lay flat or easily opened to the page with the exercise you're currently doing. I realize that this sort of binding may be cost prohibitive.

The second is that I'd like to read MORE about Denise's life-changing experiences with these exercises. I am a person who really likes "proof" so I'd like more "testminials" from her.

If you're new to Law of Attraction or Conscious Creation, I recommend getting a basic LoA book along with this one. Ask and it is Given by Abraham-Hicks or their new book The Law of Attraction (which I have not read and is coming out today). Denise's book has extremely basic information about LoA so it would be really useful to have a bit more background.

4 out of 5 stars Slow Start, But Worth It!.......2007-05-18

Like other reviewers, I think this is a great story. There are multiple levels to the plot--a murder mystery, a run at a basketball championship, a school project mirroring real life, a friendship tested. Even with all these elements working together, the story isn't convoluted. The start of the story, though, does drag a bit, especially compared to the fast pace of the rest of the novel. Overall a great read, though--another great one by this author!--and one that boys and girls alike would enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars This Author Deserves More Recognition.......2006-04-20

I read this book based on a student recommendation. What a welcome surprise. This author deserves much more recognition for her talent. I look at and read Young Adult books all the time, but I knew nothing of this book.

The Perfect Shot is a wonderful look at teen life and the struggles human beings go through when dealing with a loss. This book is also an experienced look at the struggles young adults go through when trying to figure out what their place is in this world.

The book does all of the above and accelerates the plot with a suspenseful ending that will leave the reader wanting to read whatever this author produces.

This book is a gem of a Young Adult book. This is a definite must-read.

I am now going to backtrack and read this author's other books, one of which is an Edgar Award winner.

I couldnt put this book down, but at some parts i had to, this story is very intense and that made it all the more lovely.
the murder of one boy's girlfriend turns into a path to life discovery, a path that leads to the meaning of everything. read this book and follow young Brian, go down the path with him. you will discover too.

Book Description

Policing is a consuming profession with incredibly high elements of stress. Research suggests that police divorce rates are more than double the national average of ordinary marriages. The spouse's fear of physical danger, adjusting to shift work, transfers and changes in the officers' personality are only a few of the contributing factors, but the most crucial problem is the breakdown of communication within the relationship. From the beginning of the officers' careers they are trained to control their emotions, and thus are accused of being cold-hearted. Spouses agree that law enforcement officers grapple with the real-life horrors on the job and that the bitter belief that 'cops don't cry' is sadly untrue.

4 out of 5 stars Good for new police wives/families.......2005-09-29

I have been married to a police officer for 8 years. I finally decided to read a book dedicated to police families to try to make sense of some of the issues that only a police family will have to deal with. This book was terrific!

4 out of 5 stars a readable useful book.......2003-05-18

For COPS DON'T CRY, Canadian Vali Stone conducted interviews from which she has quoted extensively & surveys & added them to her own personal experience within the distinctive lifestyle of the police community, to bring together her information & insights into how to sustain a supportive & enduring marriage & family life.

Vali Stone makes no bones about it: When your spouse is presenting symptoms of job-related stress, she repeatedly urges you to get help immediately, as she did. Doing nothing about it will not make it "go away" & will, ultimately, ensure defeat of your marriage.

COPS DON'T CRY is a serious & good book, no matter which profession you or your spouse is in. Listening to what spouses have said about being married to a policeman, is both engaging & eye-opening. It is a look at how couples live together, through better or worse, & what those old-fashioned attributes such as loyalty, compassion, & living a public life can be.

Well done! Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE! - Knowledge is truly power!.......2006-05-30

This book is awesome! If you have a child that receives special education services you NEED this book!! This book is full of the answers I have been looking for, for the last 4 years.I have read it twice and will read it again. This is an easy read it is broken down into 5 sections that everyone can understand. My favorite is section #3 The Parent as Expert. I used this section along with the others to get my son ESY services and 1:1 reading remediation.

Here is my success story, thanks to the knowledge I gained from this book......

I read section 3 while attending the Wrightslaw Special Education Law and Advocacy 2 day Boot Camp .When I got home I looked through my son's file and found 2 woodcock reading mastery test. I immediately requested a meeting with the school and requested that they give him another one this year, and give me the results before our Annual Review Meeting in May.

Well, I got the results and used power point as the book suggested and designed a graph using the Standard Scores from the test. I was not sure what cluster score they used to determine regression so I did one for each of them. In our Annual Review meeting they started talking about how well my son has done and how much progress he has made this year.( I knew what was coming next because it is the same thing they have said for the last 3 years, almost verbatim) Well before they said he did not qualify for Extended School Year Services (ESY) I asked them to explain how it all worked and what cluster score they used to make these determinations; so they explained it to me. I then pulled out my graph and said " well I had to put it in a graph because I am such a visual person and this data is so confusing and It just looks like a bunch of numbers etc etc....but what you explained to me is that we use this cluster and when I plugged in that Standard Score he has really show significant regression not progress like you were just saying. They said, "well now that we see it like that we see what you are saying, it has never been presented with that sort of twist to us before."

Well, he will be receiving ESY this year, using an Orton-Gillingham based program. I just got the Notice of Conference Decision copy in the mail and I found this statement quite amusing....

" The school presented data that indicated (child's name)did not qualify for extended year services. Mrs. Graves presented data that showed (child's name) has not made significant gains in reading during this school year and is thus further delayed by his grade placement than he was last year. The committee agreed to accept this conclusion and provide summer services."

Knowledge is truly power, This book along with the Wrightslaw Special Education Law and advocacy Boot Camp helped me get my son the help he has needed for the past 4 years!

5 out of 5 stars A "must read" for every parent with a special ed. classified child.......2006-04-08

As if being confronted with the diagnosis of a learning or developmental disability in your child wasn't stressful enough, upon diagnosis and classification, a parent is thrown into the ocean that is special education and the bureaucratic nightmare that goes along with it. This book is a treasure trove of strategies - everything from managing your paperwork to managing your emotions with respect to special education is covered. "The best way to avoid due process is to assume and prepare for due process" and "treat your relationship with the school personnel as a marriage with no possibility of divorce" are two of the most powerful "Wrightisms" I came away with and have served us well in advocating for our children with autism.

If you have the opportunity to attend a Wrightslaw boot camp in your area, bypass the purchase of this book and wait until you attend the conference - this book is often included in the conference fees.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend this Awesome Book!!!.......2005-09-26

This book is a wonderful asset for parents who are advocating for their kids. Many times I have let my emotions control my dealings with the school and this book explains why that is detrimental to your childs education.

FETA will help you understand why it is so critical to control your emotions and use them as a source of energy.

Chapter 5 explains obstacles that parents encounter (misinformation, school culture, etc) and how to overcome. It gives examples of several personality types and strategies for dealing with them.

Chapter 6 is about resolving conflicts with the school. It acknowledges the frustration many parents feel and gives you excellent advice on the best way to handle yourself. It describes common reasons for conflict and recommends solutions.

The other chapters are just as wonderful. I cannot say enough good about this book. It has saved me from much embarrassment with my child's school - since I am a bit outspoken (understatement!)

The book also discusses the importance of record keeping. It details how to create a file for your child, obtain confidential school records under the FERPA act, the importance of effective letter writing ("Letter to the Stranger") and it even has sample letters in the appendix.

3 out of 5 stars Basic primer.......2005-08-02

Very simplistic language makes this a good primer for parents new to special education. For those with some experience, I found this book to be too rudimentary. However, I will lend it to parents of children just diagnosed.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have! An excellent book for anyone in the system........2004-11-20

I have an autistic son and this book has been my savior. It is a must have for anyone entering into the "world" of special needs. I have many other books but I constantly refer to this book in the end. It walks you step-by-step on how to write letters requesting information from your child's school and provides templates for many other well written letters you may need to use.

This book is not a complicated read..it reads fast and is easily understandable. I bought the Wrights Law book also and was able to read this book and refer to the Law book at the same time. As you delve into the special education system you will want to get books that help you write more complex IEP goals..but trust me you will be digging into your stack of books reaching for this book over and over again

    Book Description

n the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the ideas and practices of justice in Europe underwent significant change as procedures were transformed and criminal and civil caseloads grew apace. Drawing on the rich judicial records of Marseille from the years 1264 to 1423, especially records of civil litigation, this book approaches the courts of law from the perspective of the users of the courts (the consumers of justice) and explains why men and women chose to invest resources in the law.

Smail shows that the courts were quickly adopted as a public stage on which litigants could take revenge on their enemies. Even as the new legal system served the interest of royal or communal authority, it also provided the consumers of justice with a way to broadcast their hatreds and social sanctions to a wider audience and negotiate their own community standing in the process. The emotions that had driven bloodfeuds and other forms of customary vengeance thus never went away, and instead were fully incorporated into the new procedures.
