5 out of 5 stars Perfect Baby Shower/New Baby Gift.......2004-10-06

Ususally skeptical about some so-called "experts" rating kids' products, I happen to catch one of the co-authors one morning on NBC's Today Show. Her approach to evaluating kids' toys, books, software, etc. was so straightforward, smart and dead-on that I immediately went out and bought the book. Best investment I ever made.

I have two kids, age 11 and 7, and I know what they like. The problem is I tend to buy the same type of toys over and over for them. The beauty of this guide is that it introduces you to types of products and brands that you may not have considered before. I find it's lack of gender-stereotyping also refreshing. It is invaulable for holidays and birthdays, and I find myself referencing it constantly.

I understand that this is the one and ONLY guide that does not accept any form of payment for review of products. Therefore, I can unequivocally trust the reviews to be impartial. Each product is not just reviewed by adults imposing their values on it, but by kids of the targeted age group. This makes me confident that the products aren't just "good for my kid," but actually will be enjoyed by them.

5 out of 5 stars The next best thing to being Santa Claus.......2003-11-07

Thanks to the Oppenheims, I am the best gift giver in my family. I'm not letting anyone in my family know about my secret weapon...but you should all know that my nieces and nephews think I am the best uncle ever. The book tells you what to get for every age and every budget. I love being the hit of every family party.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I could give more than 5 stars...........2003-09-27

This book is INVALUABLE. I have seven neices and nephews, but no kids of my own, and I rely on this series as a reference for gift-giving ALL the time (I've used these books since 2000). Before that, gifts I gave to them were often not age-appropriate, didn't appeal to the kids, or drove the parents NUTS with the noice levels.

And then, I started using the Portfolio!!! I know, this sounds like a bad infomercial, but I'm being honest, I promise. So far, it's been ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS - no kidding. I've given my nephews (ranging from newborn to 10 years old) several gifts, books, and videos, all of which have been perfectly age-appropriate, well-recieved, and played with for long periods of time. It's easy to follow, has great hands-on tips, and is cross-referenced for easily finding ideas and tips.

The best part, however, is that not only does it cover toys, books, and games... but it also explains developmental stages, provides tips for making up your own games, and creative inspiration for thinking outside the toy-box! I cannot recommend this highly enough for parents, aunts/uncles, grandparents, or anyone who needs to buy gifts (or anything else) for kids! This is one review book that is WORTH THE PRICE, every time.

5 out of 5 stars Toy Portfolio takes you where you need to go.......2003-09-05

I was so impressed with this new book. I have purchased several other editions and always keep one with me when I go kiddie shopping. I have never found age appropriate shopping such a joy. The reviews are always on and being able to know approximate prices has been a real help.

My children are partial to Groovy Girls and all their accessories. I have seen the Oppenheims on NBC many times and know this is one of their favorites.

I usually find myself baffled when it comes to particularly young children under the age of 2. I refer to this book for great ideas.

Congratulations to the Oppenheims for another wonderful book.

Read my review of the 2001 book, my opinion stands the same. It's o.k., just lacks some info.

2 out of 5 stars Is outdated price whise, not enought details,.......2005-12-27

is not a bad guide for used car research but just don;t see why it worth 10 bucks, price can;t follow try online usually is more accurate, blue book or edmunds, not details of each car either very basic guide not worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly Communicates Used Car Buying Data.......2005-09-19

Buying a used car? I am. Buy the "Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide" first.

Rather than depend on the advice of semi-knowledgeable friends, a mechanic biased toward a car maker and not a specific vehicle, or by looking to see what your neighbor drives, you can depend on this.

I bought my 2003 Corolla LE using an earlier guide and intend to buy my next vehicle using the current edition.

In it, I found lists of "Good Bets," which are cars the authors consider to perform well over the years. That is guiding my purchase. I won't buy a car not listed there. I also found lists dividing reliable cars by price range, which cars have had recalls, unreliable models (by year), and detailed descriptions of the pros and cons of each vehicle.

That's not all. There are also articles on safety, buying strategies, batteries, insurance, towing, depreciation, tires and child car seats.

It is not a complicated book. It is straight to the point, with minimal car jargon. Novices like myself are not overwhelmed by information I am not concerned with.

I am interested in safety, performance, cost of repair and related information. I found all of this here.

I fully recommend "Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide." I am confident that because I have read it and will refer to it while I shop for an auto online, I am prepared to save money and to buy a better vehicle.

1 out of 5 stars Outdated information for you to buy a computer in 2005.......2005-01-20

Don't depend on this 2005 edition of Buying a Computer FOR DUMMIES to help you to buy a computer in 2005. This book has a lot of outdated information and missed a lot current information. For example:
1) This book still talks about "external L2 cache", or Celeron with no L2 cache; still showing the picture of SIMM memory slots. We havn't see those processors & memories for at least 7 years!
2) It still recommending about the floppy drive. Why in 2005 do we still need floppy drive & floppy disks? It should discusses more about USB flash drives.
3) It does not mention about Athlon XP processor (an alternative to Pentium 4), DDR memory, & serial ATA hard drive.
4) It still mentions the ISA expansion slot, but not PCI Express.
5) It is a mis-statement that "the only real reason to go with [XP] Home over Professional is you plan to play computer games..."; there is no different between Home & Pro for computer games; but Pro cost about $100 more than Home.
6) It does not mention about Open Office which is an alternative to Microsoft Office!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but necessarily incomplete.......2004-01-31

Okay, this is a little tough to explain. This is an EXCELLENT guide for people who need to buy a new home computer or laptop. But it by itself will not be enough to guide those people through the process smoothly.

There are two considerable strengths to this guide. First of all, it demystifies all the jargon and obscure terminology, and does a commendable job doing it. Second, Dan Gookin's advice to think about SOFTWARE primarily and not HARDWARE or PRICE when one is buying is worth its weight in gold. (The fact that brand names are scarcely used in this book is a strength and not a weakness, I believe, and fits in with Mr. Gookin's approach.) And for people who think "For Dummies" guides have too much clowning around, there is very little of it here, and it is not intrusive.

Having said all of these nice things, the book is occasionally minimal on key information. It could be argued that to make this guide complete, the author would have had to have written an 800-page book. In any case, this book alone won't get you through the computer-buying process comfortably. You should supplement the book with a friend who is moderately or heavily tech savvy.

In short, this is a great beginning and I honestly think it would be foolish for a computer beginner to buy a new machine without having read this very price-friendly work. But that reading will have to be supplemented by a friend or work colleague in the know about personal computers.

5 out of 5 stars Demystifying the Sacred Computer.......2003-04-08

Having looked at others, I have to agree that I found Dan Gookin's book to be by far the most helpful in preparing me to buy a computer for the first time. Sure, he didn't mention brand names, but there's plenty of information available from many sources to make that decision after you understand the basics, which he rightly concentrates on. As for Gookin's humor, that is a matter of taste, but I see no contradiction in being humorous, even silly, while at the same time being very serious and knowledgable about this subject. His humor helped put me at ease in a topic that is often scary for the beginner. We need awe and reverence, but they belong to God.

5 out of 5 stars An Asset for the Average Buyer.......2000-11-11

The book is well written without becoming too overbearing. As with many "For Dummies" books, there is the correct amount of levity and quite a bit of useful information. I found the info to be up to date (at least today!) in what is perhaps the fastest changing environment that ever existed. If you need a quick education ,deciding what to buy, this is your guide.

4 out of 5 stars Good solid advice for the first-time computer buyer.......2000-06-21

Buying a Computer for Dummies is a wonderful resource for someone who has never been through the herculean task of buying a computer. Even if you have purchased a computer before, this book may help demystify and improve the process for you. The best thing about the book is that the author deals with the basics of a computer (i.e. Software, Hardware) and does not deal with brand. When you are finished with this book, you will be able to buy the ideal computer for yourself. The only problem I have with the book is the lame humor. This deficit, however, is more than outweighed by the great advice it offers.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe I'm the FIRST to review this great resource!.......2005-12-15

For the great majority of car buyers, this is probably THE BEST resource. Unless you're into super-performance or the finer points of car technology, it's probably the only resource you need.

For any car that you want to check, Consumer Reports tells you clearly what type of car it is and who it's for, how reliable it has been, how satisfied its customers have been, and how much it holds its value. There's also info on performance and various routine "specs," definitely enough for 95% of us. If you're an EXTREME car enthusiast, you may be disappointed; this book isn't like the "harder-core" car publications. But Consumer Reports does an excellent job of including what most of us would want to see -- and can UNDERSTAND! After all, much of the material in the "harder-core" publications is Greek to us, right? And actually some of the technical material in this source is also a little tough-going, but not so much that it's intimidating. I think it's just enough to help us stretch our technical knowledge, without turning our brains to mush.

Consumer Reports is renowned for its "reliability" ratings, and indeed this information is probably the most valuable and most distinctive part of what CR does on cars. And in fact, this aspect should be of interest even to the "enthusiasts," because the harder-core car publications don't have anything like it. The reliability ratings are presented in a form that's easy to learn and easy to grasp at a glance. While a good reliability rating doesn't guarantee that a car will be good, it definitely stacks the deck in your favor.

An aspect of the "reliability" system that Consumer Reports doesn't get enough credit for is how excellent are its criteria for defining and determining reliability. Some other organizations (including very well known ones) use criteria that have little to do with what most of us mean by "reliability" -- their surveys focus mainly on "number of complaints," regardless of how significant the complaints are. For example, complaints about rattles, or radio reception, or about wishing the car had more power, get counted as problems and count against the car. (Often those organizations don't use the word reliability but some other term like "quality," but the media and the public usually don't get the distinction.) Consumer Reports focuses on problems more related to the basic functioning of the car, which is what most of us are more concerned about.

Consumer Reports is also renowned for being perhaps the most objective and neutral evaluator of products, free from influence of manufacturers and other interested parties. From what I've ever been able to tell, the reputation is well deserved.

The one quibble that I have with their car ratings is that they seem perhaps to lean a little too much toward practicality and don't show enough appreciation for certain kinds of upgrades. For example, they tend toward the idea that paying extra for a Mercury Mountaineer over a Ford Explorer is a waste, likewise an Acura over a Honda or a Lexus over a Toyota. But once you realize that apparent bias, you can just take it into account in making your own decisions. And besides, there's a lot to be said for practicality.

      5 out of 5 stars Great reference........2006-04-12

I enjoy Andrea Immer's approach to wine. She makes it fun and easily understandable. This buying guide lists the price range, her notes and what I think is best of all, how long a bottle lasts after it has been opened.

Great little reference book. Its also small emough to be able to put into a largeer purse or bag so you can carry it with you when you are wine shopping.

      5 out of 5 stars A great guide.......2006-03-03

The book is a nice size so you can stick it in the glove compartment, pocket or purse as you travel around California (where I live) visiting wineries. Page 6 is How to Use This Buying Guide with an explanation of how to read a label and then how the book will note the wine name and provnance (country or state), price category ($ $$ $$$ etc), taste and value ratings, and symbols like a check mark for best-of (rated most popular in their category) or an X mark worthy write ins in their respective categories and a happy face for An Andrea personal favorite. Also helpful is a notation about 'Kicthen Refrigerator or Countertop survivor.

The pricing is $=up to $12, $$=12.01-$20.00, $$$=$20.01-$35.00, $$$$-above $35.00. She keeps the rating criteria simple with scores listed on a scale of 0 up to 30. 0-9=Poor,10-15=Fair, 16-19=Good, 10-25=Very Good, 26-30=Outstanding and X=No data available because these are writes.

She notes on page 10 that 'I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I began to test how long wines hold up in the everyday kitchen not because I was on a quest to answer these big picture questions but because I kept tasting some impressive leftovers ... Even more astonishing, some of the wines stayed that way for days. Even more astonishing, some of the wines that were initially underwhelming actually came around and started tasting better after being opened for a while (in the same way that some cheeses need to sit out at room temperature to show their best flavor or a pot of chili can taste better after a day or two in the fridge).'

On page 12 she explains how the wines were chosen. She writes 'The wines represented are top sellers in stores and restaurants nationally, in each style category. I featured mostly the top selling premium, cork finished wines because they outsell generics overall. However, I did include the dominant jug and bag in a box wines and my tasters did not ignore them'.

She then proceeds to lay out the 25 most popular Whites, Reds, Best of big 6 grapes, 20 most popular Merlots, 30 most popular Cabernet Sauvignons and Blends, 10 most popular Champagnes and Sparking wines, 10 most popular Pinot Grigio/Gris, 5 most popular other Whites, 10 most popular Italian and Spanish Reds, 10 Most popular Shiraz/Syrahs, and Rhone style reds and 10 most popular Red Zinfandels.

Overall its one of the best and most useful wine guides I have bought and used. Buy the 2006 edition instead of this one or inaddition to this one since it has over 50 new wines listed.

5 out of 5 stars This book makes sense of it all.......2004-12-05

This book succeeds in what it aspires to do: make wine-buying an unintimidating act. So many Americans think of wine as a special-occasion indulgence, and that it can't possibly be good if isn't expensive, as opposed to the more European attitude that a glass of wine (or two) is an everyday thing. Naturally, to have wine as a more everyday life- and food-enhancer, unless you're a multi-millionaire, you'll want to know about good wines in different price categories. Immer's non-snobbish approach led her to include an under-$12 category, for which I am grateful. (Who'd have thought a $7 Chardonnay from Vons Market, Lindeman's Bin 65 from Australia, could be this good?) In just a few skims, I already feel far more knowledgeable about wine than I did before. I've already tried some of her recommendations and have been very pleased. I've tended to stick to the same few wines due to disappointments when I've experimented (based more on label appeal than anything else!) but now I know of literally hundreds of wines that I'd like to try. The layout of this book is very user friendly and it's small and lightweight enough to bring on a shopping trip.

This is not a book for the connoisseur who loves hard-to-find wines but is geared toward the buyer of wines you'll find in many American restaurants and merchants such as grocery stores.

      5 out of 5 stars Really Useful.......2004-11-22

I'm impressed that this tells how long different wines will last after opening either at room temperature or in a refrigerator. That is something I haven't seen before.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful information for the serious piano buyer........2007-08-15

I purchased this book to get an idea of how much specific pianos would cost, and I found the information to be accurate. Aside from pricing and some commentary on a few pianos, there is not much more information. It is indeed exactly what it says, a supplement. Purchase the Piano Book by the author for an excellent book on piano buying.

If you're buying a piano -- new or used, vertical or grand -- you need this supplement. Why? Not only does it show current MSRPs for the pianos, but it also gives an update on various piano manufacturers. There's nothing worse that relying on out-of-date information.

          4 out of 5 stars Helpful resource........2007-01-10

This edition contains mostly correct information. I used it to provide a little info to a client about a piano and then we visited the dealer and found out that the info was only partially correct. HOWEVER, I would not have had any where to start without this book. It would be difficult to do a book on current market conditions without some chance of minor discrepancies to occur, anyway. I am glad that I have this book as it works as a great starting point for info on current Piano industry players.
