Book Description
A revealing look at the college freshman experience, from an insider's point of view
After fifteen years of teaching anthropology at a large university, Rebekah Nathan had become baffled by her own students. Their strange behavioreating meals at their desks, not completing reading assignments, remaining silent through class discussionsmade her feel as if she were dealing with a completely foreign culture. So Nathan decided to do what anthropologists do when confused by a different culture: Go live with them. She enrolled as a freshman, moved into the dorm, ate in the dining hall, and took a full load of courses. And she came to understand that being a student is a pretty difficult job, too. Her discoveries about contemporary undergraduate culture are surprising and her observations are invaluable, making My Freshman Year essential reading for students, parents, faculty, and anyone interested in educational policy.

Required Reading for University Administration and Parents.......2007-10-09
Rebeka Nathan's anthropological account of campus life at the anonymous "AnyU" public university should be read by every professor, university administrator, or parent of a college student. As Nathan says, "Most students have no understanding of...how the university actually functions," while professors "have no idea what a dorm room looks like,...or the cost of books, tuition and housing." Her assessment of what's wrong (students are working more nowadays, and "diversity" is nothing more than a buzzword) are dead-on.
College freshman today!.......2007-09-18
Although this book was a mandatory assignment in a graduate course, it was a great read. The author's decision to transform from a professor to student was a brilliant idea to uncover the truths of college freshman. Although her methods raise some ethical flags, her discoveries of what goes on in the dorms, class and outside of class are amazingly true. Her discoveries at AnyU not only premise on this campus, but so many others.
In addition, so many professors today make unrealistic demands on college students. For once, a professor was able to understand what it is like to be a freshman and adapt to the needs of her students after this research. In addition, the author was able to express her ideas and those of others on academic integrity, meaningful courses, international students, learning and campus community.
The author's detailed descriptions of her personal experiences intrigued me every step of the way. I would definitely recommend anyone, student, parent or professor to read this book. Very insightful and productive research!
Things look better when you're there.......2007-07-16
Shows what an older person in her 50s can get out of the college atmosphere by registering as a real full-time student. This anthropologist learned how younger students behave in the dorms, in the hall discussions, and what they really think of their teachers and of one another. The new (but somewhat older freshman) did not reveal who she really was and went along with the students in what they did or said. Not until the very end does she tell who she is; surprise and understanding are the remarks she heard, but retributions.
Quite an open book, like Augustine's Confessions (almost) and Rousseau's of the same title. It's a good read no matter what your age/sex/education.
Clueless.......2007-07-03
I'm around the author's age (50) and I actually went back to college to study, not to spy on people. Just through casual conversations I know 100x more than I learned from this book. You know, she has revelations like today's students have cell phones instead of rotary dial phones, and some have been known to actually drink alcohol a day or two before reaching age 21. (I'm being sarcastic.)
She didn't seem to interact much with students. This is a dry, dull, uninteresting book with little useful information and is more like a community college paper than a serious study.
Informative to both the professor and the student.......2007-06-09
I found this book, this account of re-entering college to study the student, insightful. It brought back memories of my undergraduate days, though I did not go to a large public university like the one in the book. This fact leads me to disagree about with the author as to the state of "community" in the undergraduate life. The small, private school that I attended was a Christian college. In having this affiliation, it gave every student a connection to every other student, and this lead to more community than I was portrayed in the book. I am not suggesting that every college and university in the country become Christian, just that having another (or at least one) thread that ties all the students together did more for community than policy could. We regularly had meetings, floor activities, and group meals that were attended by the vast majority of the dorm/floor. In sharing another bond, we were more willing to share other things, which is something to think about at least.
I was surprised to learn that cheating was so prevalent in universities, and in student life. It was facts like this, and others that the author peppered throughout her narrative that I found, while not altogether new, useful and interesting. I was especially interested in the final chapter, which in the paperback edition was a discussion of ethics. I found the rules, both institutionally and self imposed to be both pleasing (that the research wasn't "compromised") and frustrating (that I couldn't get the full story - not that I wanted it, just that I couldn't get it). As a future researcher myself, albeit with molecules not humans, the chapter brought up many points to think about.
All in all, the book was worth reading, and was loaded with information I am sure I will make use of as I teach my own classes.

An excellent guidebook for venturing into Real Estate Syndication.......2007-10-17
I have been working in commercial real estate for my entire career (over 15 years) for private companies with portfolios ranging from 50-1500 apartment units. When I ventured out on my own into the world of real estate syndication, Sam Freshman's book provided me with a roadmap to follow. I am currently in the process of raising capital for my first syndicated deal and I find myself constantly referring back to the pages of his book as I go through the process. It is quite a learning curve but has been a much smoother ride having this resource by my side. I have been able to ask more educated questions of my attorneys and advisors and have been able to provide better answers to potential investors with greater confidence. This is a great reference for seasoned real estate professionals as well as undergrad or post graduates going into the real estate field.
The only book on real estate syndication that you need to read........2007-09-13
While searching for information on forming real estate syndications, Samuel Freshman's "Principles of Real Estate Syndication" continually popped up as the authority on the subject. After reading it, I have to agree that anyone seriously interested in investing in or forming a real estate syndication would be best served buying this book. It is a thorough review and can later be used for reference. There are dozens of real estate investing books out there, but this is clearly the best I've found.
Concise and Informative.......2007-09-05
As a real professional for over 25 years, I have read numerous "how to" books. Mr. Freshman's book covers aspects of real estate sydications overlooked by many other authors. The book is well laid out. The first chapter, "What is a Syndicate," provides an excellent roadmap for the book, setting out with clear charts and graphs, the economic fundamentals of a syndication and the incentive for utilizing this type of investment vehicle. By the time the book concludes, the reader has an in depth understanding of the syndication process - from acquisition, to financing, tax considerations, marketing, management, securities issues, disposition, illustrative forms and more. The book is both comprehensive and authoritative - a must read for anyone who contemplates investing in a syndication or becoming a syndicator.
Principles of Real Estate Syndication.......2007-08-20
If you want to understand Real Estate, Entertainment and Oil and Gas Syndication, this is the book for you. It's Author, the leading expert in Real Estate Syndication, has written this book in a clear, concise and easily understood manner. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

THE Encyclopedia Manual on Syndication!.......2007-07-30
This book is an excellent resource to have on hand for anyone in the Syndication business regardless if their Offerings are real estate, oil & gas, or entertainment driven. The principles and concepts shared are universal to all forms and types of Syndications.
I especially like chapter 21 on "how to analyze an Offering" as it lists a series of great questions to ask when doing due diligence on a specific program.

Book Description
Following the success of 100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know, the editors of the American Heritage® Dictionaries have developed this new book of 100 words tailored especially to high school freshmen. This second book in the 100 Words series focuses on the kinds of words that a successful middle school graduate can learn from rigorous coursework in a variety of subjects and that nearly every freshman will encounter over the course of the school year.
The words have been chosen with various criteria in mind. Some represent key concepts in important areas of the curriculum, while others are more familiar in meaning but present challenges of spelling or usage. All are words that students can expect to see regularly in their high school reading and beyond. And each word is fully defined as well as shown in typical contexts with example sentences and quotations, many of which are taken from award-winning authors such as Harper Lee, George Orwell, Katherine Paterson, and John Knowles.
Together, these 100 words represent the increasingly sophisticated and complex vocabulary that freshmen must master as they continue their education at the next level. To learn them is not only to gain useful knowledge — it is to step into a broader world.

Caution, parents.......2007-06-08
The cover and title of this book are fun and enticing and immediately caught my eye at the bookstore - thinking of my daughter who is completing her senior year of high school. I flipped through some pages and the quotes and suggestions seemed thoughtful and interesting. When I got home, I took a closer look and noticed the chapters titled: "Going out, hooking up, dating and sex" and "Parties 101: How to have fun and be safe". I immediately flipped to these chapters to see what advice would be offered to my teen and was surprised to find - as is stated in the editorial review posted on this sight - not only mixed messages, but a real sense that drinking and hooking up were natural parts of the college experience. Of course, reality is that these things do tend to be part of the college experience, but as adults, producing books for guidance for teens, it would seem we would serve them better by presenting a message of discouraging these activities. This book does not do that. In fact, one message sent in the book is "As long as you're staying on top of your work, you're not partying too much". Hmm...not the attitude I want my daughter to learn. While I did find some parts of the book interesting and sometimes amusing - I will be returning this book and looking for one that provides a better message to my daughter.
How to survive your freshman year.......2006-11-05
Excellent advice on any aspect of college life. Well organized and easy to read.
Love this book! .......2006-07-05
It's fun to read and is a good resource from real students who have been through their college freshman year! I've already bought it for four recent high school graduates. I think it's the perfect graduation gift.
Awesome book. Easy read........2006-04-18
It's great to get so much advice from people who have recently gone through freshman year of college (much better than books written by school counsellors or authors who haven't been in college for 20 years).
Great gift!.......2006-04-14
This is the best gift for a high school senior. The new one is even better than the last edition....

CLEP for freshman college composition (REA).......2007-10-06
Excellent. I used the CD only. I took each CD practice test once and past without difficulty. English is my weakest subject.CLEP Freshman College Composition (REA) - The Best Test Prep for the CLEP Exam (Test Preps)
A Great Place to Start.......2007-06-20
I found this book to be very helpful but not enough by itself. The cd alone makes the book worth buying though. The book assumes that you remember grammar terminolgy. Since it had been over 20 years since I had taken an English class I did not remember the terminology. I supplemented with English Grammar for Dummies. That book was very helpful. I also researched bibliographies. Here's a good site: [...]noMenuRequest. The test was harder than I expected. I almost ran out of time. There was more reading and analyzing of writing and poetry than I expected. All in all, I studied for three solid days (probably 25 hours total) and got a 66. That was enough to test me out of two English classes.
It really did help........2007-03-13
The REA book helped a lot with preparing for the CLEP exam. The actual CLEP exam was much different from the practice exams in REA's book. It would help the study process if REA updated the three practice exams in the book, and included all three of those exams on the accompanying CD, instead of only the first two exams. An earlier reviewer pointed out that there were some errors in the REA book. I noted the same errors and found that there were several additional errors throughout the book. The CLEP book would benefit a lot from being proofread and from having the errors corrected. Overall, it is my opinion that the REA book is very helpful with passing the CLEP exam, and I highly recommend purchasing the book.
CLEP Freshman College Composition (REA).......2007-01-10
The book had much of the information needed for the actual test. Having a CD with practice tests was GREAT and helped to practice format and pacing of time! Explanations of information was also very beneficial. I was able to supplement my area of weakness as revealed by using the book.
Good, but not great for CLEP prep.......2006-08-09
This book is OK, but not nearly as good as the other REA CLEP Prep books. The authors did something odd in this one - it's as if they were writing it as a study guide or to accompany a class. There were many references to "according to your professor's specifications" and "professors ... will demand." Who cares about professors?!!! I'm studying for an exam, not trying to do better in a class.
The information provided is not very specific either. Most items are covered in general terms and will need to be researched elsewhere to get the specifics.
The computerized tests do not completely match up to the ones in the book, so if you use both as a reference this becomes more time consuming.
There were also many typos (i.e. p. 50 "a student may writes a paper" and p. 51 "the next section ... usually discusses the extant of published knowledge"). This is unacceptable in a book that is supposed to be sharpening your English/grammar skills.
I supplemented with Grammar for Dummies (good book) and also looked on the internet for rules of citing references.
Scored a 75 on the CLEP, mostly due to a strong background in this subject.

Good introduction to college .......2005-10-04
I thought it was a good overall book that covered many areas of college life. The only problem I had with it is I did not know it was published by a Christian publisher. He added some things inside the book that was insulting of me as a non-Christian.I hate politically correct, and this is not a kind of "represent all religions, or don't talk about yours" kind of perception.I think it's good to talk about your religion, no matter what it is, but he had written only that you as a christian might have a hard time learning how to bring people to the Christian way of thinking.I do not want to be converted, as that seems a little intolerant, and infringing on my right to not be bulldozed by mormons, catholics, buddists, islamist, and jehova witnesses.
Great Book.......2005-06-23
I'm an incoming freshman to UGA, Go Dawgs!!!!, and I absolutley loved this book. It was funny and easy to read. Lots of helpful hints for the nervous freshman.
Not a bad read.......2004-05-26
Honestly, I read this book. I felt it was very down to earth and a very easy read. Zach does his best to make incomming freshmen at ease with their transition into college life. For the most part it is humorous and has enough wit to keep most readers interested.
I will say that it doesn't give the most complete look at college life. In order to impart your college freshman with a complete point-of-view of the college experience I recommend (in addition to this book):
Been There, Should've Done That II : More Tips for Making the Most of College by Suzette Tylor. (ISBN: 0965608611 ) Decent advice, and a quick read.
College 101 : The Book Your College Does Not Want You To Read (ISBN: 0966412206 ) by Guy Stevens. The advice is spot on and any book hated by college administrations can't be all bad! Also some of the stories are pretty classic.
Awful book!.......2004-05-07
This is one awful, awful book. I hated it. It was NOT funny, as I think he intended it to be, and it had no content value at all. He is basically trying to sell his diary. To be honest, I didn't finish it. It didn't help me at all.
W00t!.......2003-12-27
This book is FREAKING HILARIOUS! I got it for Christmas after my first semester here. I finnished it in two days. It was hilarious. When I get back to school, I'm gonna recommend it to all my warped friends. What's really funny is when he mentions ADD and a really tiny attention span and I remember I have one of those also and.....what was I talking about again? Hi....baby rabbits are cute....I'm going to go study my coloring books again now....

Dr. Kadar arms one with the knowledge in order to make educated decisions during the first year and beyond. The invaluable advice contained in this book will propel one to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. Great Book.......2007-08-16
I am a longtime friend of Dr. Kadar and a math teacher at Hollywood High School in Los Angeles.
I enjoyed the book immensely primarily because of its readability. Dr. Kadar has a real gift for communicating about topics on which others frequently just lecture . His candid, lucid style make this work approachable for his target audience: high school seniors, many of whom abhor reading anything. I can't think of anyone who would not benefit from the wit and wisdom contained in this book. The straightforward, yet whimsical approach to academics, campus social life, the trials and joys of this coming of age period--make this tome a pleasure to recommend to all.
Why this book..........2007-08-14
Hello. I am the author of College Life 102. I started writing this book for my son, Kenny, as he went off to college. I wanted to share with him knowledge and insights from my eleven years of post-secondary education and over a quarter century of teaching college and medical students. I wanted to help him make a smooth transition to college and to thrive there from the start.
College Life 102 contains insights on how to study smarter instead of harder. It includes strategies I've not seen described anywhere else, such as technique for dodging the stress of deadlines that I call the "pre-deadline deadline."
One section of the book consists of science based information to enable students to make wiser decisions about their diet, alcohol consumption and other health related topics. As a medical doctor and educator, I feel particularly qualified to discuss these issues. My goal in these chapters is to be accurate and therefore credible, to neither exaggerate nor minimize the risks that students face.
Kenny shared the book with his friends and later with students at the University of Washington, when he became an instructor in their freshman orientation program. I received lots of useful and encouraging feedback. I added sections and modified others to update the book. Kenny graduated in four years, cum laude with distinction.
College Life 102, The No-Bull Guide to a Great Freshman Year, contains information I wish I had before I started college. Why 102 instead of 101? This is a more advanced course. It teaches students not to survive but to thrive. Carpe diem!
Not a book for good kids.......2007-07-23
I read the reviews and purchase this book for my 17 year old daughter. What a shock! This book tells them how many pot laced brownies to eat...then speaks about oral sex...... This is not a book for kids who are raise with good morals and values. Worst book I have ever purchased.
no punches pulled........2007-04-16
Full disclosure: I am a friend of the author. HOWEVER... we often have rather heated political discussions.
I was surprised that the book not only gives the sort of advice I (as a college teacher) would want people to know.... the sort of "common sense" that is not very common (such as making efforts at the beginning of the class rather than at the end), but goes further and discusses the sorts of temptations students will run into in their dormitories, such as binge drinking, sex, etc.
Andrew doesn't make value judgments about those who indulge... rather, he gives clear explanations on what is likely to go wrong, so that the student can be forearmed. My college age son now has two copies of this book...

What an awesome idea!.......2005-07-30
I just recieved a copy of this book, and I am soon going to have my son read it (he is an upcoming freshman). It helps me to know that he is reading about the "tough stuff," and that he is learning that he won't be the only one that feels all the things that an new freshman does. The sophomores that wrote this book must be very talented and I hope that they earn the respect they deserve for all their hard work!
Great advice from sophomores to freshmen!!!.......2005-07-10
What a great idea--- students advising students on the freshman year in high school. This book is full of wonderful advice; the students have really researched their topics, and they know what they are writing about. Every high school, middle school, and public library should have copies of this invaluable book! How lucky these students are to have a teacher like Dawn Burnette. Keep up the great work!
Parents-Get inside your High Schooler's Head!.......2005-05-25
This book has the novelty of being written by High School Sophmores,( I believe Dawn Burnette was their teacher), the information will help us as parents understand what kind of issues are relevant today. There is a great balance of humor, but serious issues lke peer pressure, depression, are handled the way I want my children to handle them. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Besides, how many books have you read that have 60 10th grade authors?
