5 out of 5 stars PUMPED UP.......2005-06-08

This was a phenominal thriller with some passionate sex thrown into the mix. I kept reading chapter after chapter and when I finally had to put the book down, I was ready to go again and find out the ending of the story. You may be a bit confused at the beginning of the book but everything is tied up at the end and it all makes sense. Will look for more from this author.

3 out of 5 stars Light romantic suspense.......2004-10-02

Johnathan Brighton is badly in need of a vacation, but as he's driving through the lonely desert highway into Mexico, he's pulled over, shot on the side of the road, and left for dead. Six months later, he's lost part of his memory, and the partial use of his right hand. For a workaholic CEO, this isn't just an inconvenience, it's a disaster.

Katie Cavenaugh is an undercover FBI agent struggling to maintain her reputation after an impulsive decision has her boss questioning her abilities. The assignment is simple: pose as John's physiotherapist, find evidence implicating him in a murder committed just before he left for Mexico, and get out. But things get complicated when Katie realizes there's more to John than meets the eye. Can she reign in her attraction to him and focus on getting the job done?

I loved Dee Davis's DANCING IN THE DARK, but MIDNIGHT RAIN didn't quite live up to my expectations. For a romantic suspense book, I had the real culprit figured out from page one. That knowledge definitely made it hard to pick up the book again after putting it down, and it made the story drag in parts.

I found the characters to be three-dimensional and well written, however, with John leading the pack. It was refreshing to read a romance novel where the hero is less-than-perfect physically. This imperfection doesn't make him any less sexy or charming, however. His need for Katie, his reluctance to trust her once he finds out her true identity, and his willingness to fight and discover the truth had me rooting for him throughout the length of the novel.

Overall, a light romantic suspense novel to curl up with at night, and one that won't make you want to sleep with the lights on. For a real suspense thriller, and a better indication of Ms. Davis's talents, pick up DANCING IN THE DARK. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Dee Davis has proved herself worthy once again!!.......2003-07-10

This novel opens with John Brighton in a hospital bed, recovering from a gunshot wound to the head after his vacation in Mexico. Yet one of his friends, co-worker, and employee was murdered just after his misfortune, and this has the FBI and other attorneys convinced that John killed him. Katie Cavanaugh is working undercover as John's physical therapist. She was sent to help find incriminating evidence against John that will convict him. However, Katie is attracted to John, and John is attracted to her, but she can't get her emotions mixed up with her job, and when John's brother tells him that the woman he loves is not who he thought she was, his world is turned upside down. Katie and John are on a roller coaster of emotions while trying to prove himself innocent when everyone is convinced that John committed the murder. But in the end the truth is revealed...

A great read!!!

2 out of 5 stars Agree with What a Letdown.......2003-07-01

I also do not understand all the rave reviews about this book. I gave up after about Chapter 4 and skimmed through to the end in about 15 minutes. I agree with one of the other reviewers that I got tired of reading Katie repeating her thoughts and did not think she was a particularly strong character. Jonathan struck me as a little whiney also. I had already figured out the bad guy by the second chapter but even he turned out to be just a weak link.

2 out of 5 stars WHAT A LETDOWN.......2003-06-22

I'm really surprised at the numerous good reviews which this book received. Midnight Rain is such a letdown. The whole book was a drag as I just couldn't get into the flow of the story because of the author's concentration on repeating the thoughts of the heroine. She kept on repeating the same thoughts going thru' the heroine's mind that I was really sick of it. I literally had a huge headache from forcing myself to finish the book. This book lacked the humour & slickness which I found in "Just Breathe" & "Dark of the Night". It also lacked the tenderness in "The Promise". I really hope that she regains her flair in "Dancing in the Dark".

Book Description

Looking For The Past...

Ellie Connor is a biographer with a special talent for piecing together fragments of the past. Her latest project, though, promises to be her most challenging--and personal. Not only is she researching the life of a blues singer who disappeared mysteriously forty years ago, but Ellie is also trying to find the truth about the parents she never knew. The love child of a restless woman who died young and an anonymous father, Ellie has little to go on but a faded postcard her mother sent from a small East Texas town--the hometown of her latest subject.

Could Mean Finding Her Future

It is there that Ellie meets Blue Reynard, a man with deep roots and wide connections who may help her find answers. With a piercing gaze and cool grin, Blue is as sultry and seductive as the Southern night air. Beneath his charming surface, however, lies a soul damaged by loss. Despite her better judgment, Ellie finds herself irresistibly drawn to Blue's passion--and his pain. But Ellie's been lured by sweet talk and hot kisses before. How can she possibly stay with blue when every instinct tells her to run?

5 out of 5 stars WOW.....Upset when it was over....so awesome that I wanted more!!!.......2007-08-08

Okay, yall, I suck at reviews b/c I cant seem to say what I want without telling all. LOL But I had to try with this book. My Grandmother sent me this book b/c I will read anything. I picked it up 2 days ago and couldnt put it down. I got so wrapped up in the story of Ellie, Blue, and Mabel. The chacters in the book are wonderfully written. Even the supporting characters draw you in. I love Blues and Jazz and this books makes them come alive on paper!!! You can almost hear the music swirling around you as you read!! The story behind the story is just another draw of this book. I have never been SO pleased with a book. Again all I can say is WOW!!! Go Ruth for writing such an AMAZING book. I honestly was upset when it was over....so AWESOME that I wanted more!!!

4 out of 5 stars Heated and sexy.......2003-06-17

I really enjoyed this sensual romance as the hero and hrone fight their demons of the past to trust to love. Both have loved and lost and so are fearful of getting involved with each other, but anyone can see Blue and she are made for each other.

Interesting secondary characters create a very believable world. As always her heroes are divinely sexy, very manly, but perceptive and sensitive. The mystery element as she seeks her identity, which, if not entirely surprising. is handled well. A super read, one any lover of romance and women's fiction will really savour. She has a wonderful way with language and a true ability to capture setting and character with wonderful details.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Wonderful Book.......2001-12-23

This is a book that you will continue to experience long after you finish. The book is filled with love and secrets. The secrets which are uncovered lead not to unhappiness but to more fullfillment for the people involved.

Along the way, you experience the beauty and meaning of music, that special kind of music called the Blues. You find yourself wanting to hum an old song or turn on the radio and find a new tune to refuel you with a passion for life.

There just is so much in this one book. It is impossible not to love it and not to remember for always.

5 out of 5 stars Absorbing.......2001-10-01

Hadn't even heard of Ruth Wind before but halfway thru this book I'm looking for other books of hers. All the ones listed seem to be either much lighter in nature or out of print. She's a terrific writer with an ability to draw you into her characters' feelings and to the atmosphere. I hope she writes another "real" book.

4 out of 5 stars This book is stunning.......2001-07-14

This is the first book I've read by Ruth Wind. If you can put this book down willingly, you are a stronger person than I. Her descriptions are excellent. Pay attention to all the characters for this is not just one story. Very emotional. It will tie you in knots. (pleasant knots).

3 out of 5 stars Some problems with realism.......2007-06-16

This is the third book by Lisle that I've read, and the one that I've liked the least. It wasn't bad, exactly. I just had some issues with various aspects of the book.

For one, I didn't think the writing style was as smooth and readable as in the other two books. I just thought at times her wording was awkward and cyclical. And sometimes too simplistic. There just wasn't all that great a flow. But it wasn't awful, only average. Her other books were better written.

But there were two issues that really bothered me about the book. One was, I guess you could call it, Phoebe's emotional scars...or lack thereof, to a certain degree. Her ex-husband was a sexual sadist...or so it seemed. The wording on that was rather vague in the book and you were only given veiled hints as to what the ex did to her. It didn't sound pretty. Yet, it didn't seem like Phoebe had any lingering scars from the sexual sadism. One would have thought she'd be extremely wary of sex - considering he'd been her only lover - or hate certain things, or just be more conscious of what he'd done to her. And I just didn't get that feeling. For a large part of the book, you only get the impression that her ex had physically abused her, not sexually as well. And then when she was intimate with Alan, she wasn't bothered by the frantic pace, or other actions. Basically, I just felt there was a lack of realism with Phoebe because it didn't seem like she dealt at all with being sexually abused, only physically.

The second issue was the lack of a resolution regarding a major "fight" between Alan and Phoebe. He said some really nasty things to her and she was crushed. Then he finds out the truth, but they never talk about it, never resolve what had happened. It was like "oh, oops, I was wrong..la, la, la, la, laaaaa....let's go have sex." Sorry, no, that doesn't work. It just really bothered me. This was a major obstacle between them and it was shoved aside with the flick of a finger.

Aside from those two things, the over all storyline was interesting. The suspense plot and the romance kept me reading. Lisle has a knack for creating interesting suspense plots. I would have liked an epilogue to wrap up all the issues, but *sigh* it seems like a lot of authors hate to do that. Anyway, decent enough book. Worth reading, despite it's issues.

4 out of 5 stars good but not great.......2007-01-16

ok, so the basic story is the heroine is divorced from her ex husband who abused her. she starts getting calls from him again that she can't trace. the odd part is that he is in a coma.

the book was pretty good, but it wasn't as good as some of the others i have read that have a similar theme (woman running from ex) - for example karen rose's book don't tell. that being said, this book was still good. i wasn't so keen on the tarot part of the book and the ghost, not because i don't like paranormal books or because i thought this was an attempt to legitamize the phone psychis or anything like that, but because it felt a little forced to me. it just didn't fit into the story as well as i would have liked.

the only other thing that kind of bothered me - and i freely admit this is just a quirk of mine and is probably a stupid little thing - is that the book didn't go in to what happened to michael's (the abusive ex) family at the end of the book **spoiler** i would think they would have been charged with conspiracy or aiding and abetting or something, and the book just glosses over that. but i know this is a stupid thing, but it still bothered me a little bit.

other than that, this was a good book, that i would recommend, but it wasn't great. the story was decently written, but not great -- basically the theme for the book. at the very least, check it out from the library if you need a book to read :) also, if you read and liked this book, or even liked the general plot but not this book so much, try don't tell by karen rose

4 out of 5 stars A chiller with a touch of the supernatural.......2006-10-16

Phoebe Rain is a woman with a past - a terrifying past of being trapped in an abusive marriage. When she manages to escape her husband, Michael, and forges a new life as a school teacher she thinks she's safe. Then he finds her one day and shoots two of the children in her class before she manages to attack him, knock him out (causing him to fall into a coma) although she's badly injured herself by his shotgun blast.

We meet Phoebe in this book as she tries to rebuild her life two years after the classroom attack. Her husband Michael is still in a coma, her life has disappeared to almost nothing as she feels responsible for the deaths of the two schoolchildren. She makes a living by doing telephone tarot readings but is constantly frightened that one day Michael will wake up and come back after her.

And then it appears that he has done just that - who is it who is telephoning her? And why does she have strange nightmares now? Why do things in her house move? And what is the ghost of a child that she is seeing? She finds herself getting to know her next door neighbour, Alan MacKerrie, a widowed doctor whose daughter died five years ago - and whose ghost is appearing to Phoebe.

This book is full of suspense - is Michael alive? Is it him to blame for the phone calls? How does he know everything Phoebe is doing? Alan the neighbour vacillates between trusting Phoebe and wondering if she's a bit of a loony, especially with all the tarot and psychic stuff.

I wasn't particularly keen on the tarot side of the book - it's not something that I am interested in or particularly keen to read about - but as the book wore on and it appeared there were more concrete reasons for some of Phoebe's experiences, I found myself more gripped. There's a lot to this book and it's slow-build, and there are some interesting exploration of the spiritual world and how Phoebe's links with that world might help, but it's still a pretty good thriller in the `normal' physical world.

The previous book I've read by Holly Lisle, Talyn, is a fantasy book and I preferred the setting of that book and the freedoms of a make-believe world. But this book was still well-written and it was easy to get caught up in Phoebe's story - I found myself rooting for her throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Why didn't she just buy a guard dog?.......2006-07-10

A loyal dog would have torn Michael to shreds before the sorry excuse for a man could retaliate. Then all her problems would have been solved, but then there'd be no story, I guess. Her ex truly was evil and the author made him very realistic. I thought the doctor was a little wimpy, though. The book will hold the reader's attention.

5 out of 5 stars One of her best!.......2006-06-07

Definitely a page-turner. This is more of a typical romance than Lisle usually writes (although her work often has a romantic element). The paranormal elements are very well handled, as is the tension--it isn't dragged on too long, bits and pieces come out as you go--a very satisfying read.

5 out of 5 stars A Lean Little Thriller that Does its Job Well.......2006-09-26

I've never heard of James Newman and I picked up MIDNIGHT RAIN on the strong recommendation of a friend. After reading this book, I'm surprised that Mr. Newman isn't better known. This novel is that good.

MIDNIGHT RAIN is a relatively simple story of a 12-year old boy who witnesses a terrible crime in a small town, and all the consequences that result. I read the novel in one sitting, and found myself in constant suspense. There were moments when I dreaded turning the page, because I was afraid of what was going to happen next. In a way, this novel reminded me of Stephen King's CARRIE: simply written yet tremendously effective.

If Newman can write more books like this, he has a fine future ahead of him. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read!.......2006-08-12

Midnight Rain by James Newman

I was lucky enough to get an autographed copy of "Midnight Rain" from James Newman. When I got it and started reading it I was hooked.

The book, "Midnight Rain" centers around a twelve year old boy named Kyle Mackey. His father is dead and his mother is an alcoholic. Kyles older brother Dan, is about to leave for college. Kyle goes off to what he calls his, "Secret Place" located in the woods, while there he witnesses a murder. Young Cassandra Belle Roarke is murdered by two men little Kyle knows.

What happens next will keep you thoroughly immersed in the story. I don't want to give away the entire plot in case some of you have yet to read this novel, and read it you should!

I never put the book down from the time I started reading it until the very last page. I was totally enthralled in the story after starting it and I'm sure you will be too.

While this may not be a "horror" novel, it did have it's truly breathtaking moments, along with interesting characters and plot twists. Midnight Rain is a suspenseful and excellently written page-turner that begs to be read in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars 'Midnight Rain' is a tense, spooky ride.......2005-08-05

I bought this book from James when I met him, Brian Keene and Jim Moore at a booksigning in June. I didn't know much about James or his book but I read the description of it online before I met him and what I read made me look forward to reading it. I'm glad I did too.

This is James's debut novel and it is very well put together. Plot, pacing, characterization are all well done and the story hits the ground running.

:evil
:evil

The story is set in the 1970's in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains in a fictional town called Midnight. While it is not a real town,we have all been there. Either for summer camp or driving though on a road trip. He captures the small town feel wonderfully. Fairs, local traditions, familiarity with neighbors, etc. is all done wonderfully.

The main character Kyle, witnesses a murder early on. It is carried out by a person of authority in the town and Kyle must decide what to do. With a horible drunken mother (his description of her despicable selfishness and denial is probably the best of the book although it causes the reader great hatred for her as well) a dead father, and a brother about to go off to college, young Kyle is really left on his own to figure things out.

The book is fast paced for the most part, though I got a tad sidetracked in a divergent storyline involving a bike that may or may not be missing, and I thought the whole bike angle could have been used for bigger scares.

As we get further along, Kyle discovers secrets with other murders, his mother's relationships. his brothers possible involvement with the dead girl, and plenty of tense action.

If a book can make you care for a character and, at times, put you in their shoes, then a writer has succeeded in doing what he was supposed to do. James has writtena fine book. i would give it a 5 out of 5 and I can't wait to read what he does next.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-12-22

A coming of age tale... told in the vein of The Body... blah blah yadda yadda - whatever! This is an amazing novel that transports readers back to their own childhood and into the lives, turmoil, and tramas of the characters and town itself, without exertion or assumption. And it warrants blurbage unique to it, not comparison to other works.

The story itself IS a coming of age tale, but it's much more than that. Kyle is not only dealing with the loss of his childhood because of a witnessed murder, but is also tortured by burden upon burden as he tries to figure out what to do - and the situation just keeps getting worse! Everything from trust that is lost to further victims, causes guilt, anxiety, and hopeless that follows Kyle like a rain cloud in a Warner Bros. cartoon.

The atmosphere is simply sublime! The clever sprinkling of actual historical events, and other subtle nuances, bring you right back to your own childhood. Nothing feels forced or even seriously attempted, it just flows and sucks you right in.

The characters are perfect; flawed, natural, and described in enough detail that you can see them, but vague enough for you to replace them with figures from your own past. Pace and style are something akin to a carnival ride. Anticipation, excitement, and nail biting action are delivered in a casual, personal manner that keeps your attention and makes you part of the town.

Did I like it? Well I absorbed it in no time flat and then told all my friends and some lady at the grocery store that they needed to read it. I didn't like it, I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Best Novel of 2004!.......2004-12-19

An underground horror writer making his mass-publication debut with a "serious literature" mystery suspense/novel?!

"No way," I thought.

Well, instincts aren't always right. With MIDNIGHT RAIN, James Newman puts the others to shame. This is one of the most unpretentious, sincere, and enjoyable books I have read in a while.

The first hand narration of Kyle Mackey, recalling his life as a 12-year old who had the misfortune of being the sole witness to a heinous murder, takes the reader to Midnight, NC circa 1975.

Kyle Mackey, an unassuming, sensitive boy takes his bike to his "secret spot," an abandoned shack in the middle of the woods. It is there he witnesses a gruesome murder. A mystery follows, as Kyle finds not only is there noone he can confide in, but things are not as they seem. A poignant tale of the loss of innocence is woven in.

That's as far as I'll go with the plot. I'd like to proclaim James Newman as a major player in the realm of fiction. His sheer story telling talent is obvious throughout, the charcters are real, the tone is consistent, this is just a hard one to put down. This is what fiction is all about-- entertainment without cheating the reader. There is no "literary snobbiness" here, just a born storyteller doing what he does best.

A MUST-READ for all mystery/suspense, and even horror fans!

Book Description

On a dark October night in the San Antonio College parking lot, Bridget McBee is confronted by a man who sends fear and terror tumbling deep into the pit of her stomach.

Suddenly out of nowhere, a car pulls to a screeching halt and the man threatening Bridget finds himself staring into the barrel of a gun - a gun in the hands of a woman who is now towering over the both of them. Within moments, the woman with the gun has subdued the man and is ensuring that Bridget is unharmed. After dropping a business card in Bridget's lap, the mysterious woman disappears as quickly as she had arrived.

Now several days later, Bridget McBee is determined to find the woman who saved her life. Too bad there's only three words printed on that card - certainly not enough information to identify her hero…

4 out of 5 stars Valiant Attempt .......2006-05-15

Herring is one of the better authors in the lesbian fiction genre. Her books span a variety of time periods, situations, and types of characters. Knowing that, I generally look forward to reading her stuff. However, 'Midnight Rain' seems to fall a little short of her typical magic.

This book is about four women who come together after being rescued from a potential rape situation by "Kate the Lesbian," a mysterious woman they would like to thank. The members of this foursome happen to all be lesbians. As such, they have conflicting and ever-changing romantic feelings for each other as they search for their saviour. "Kate" seems to bring them together, but then seems to be a small part of the overall story. (Note: The back cover leads the reader to believe Bridget, a main character, falls for the mystery woman, but this isn't even close to what really happens.)

It's a good book if you're into mysteries and just knowing characters on the surface. However, if you like to delve into character complexity and prefer torrid romances, pick another Herring book.

1 out of 5 stars MIDNIGHT RAIN.......2006-03-19

This is the first book that I had to make myself read. The plot had to many characters with unfocused messages. For example the striaght girl that helps out gay gals from being raped only at night.

After I finished the book I threw it where it belonged. In the Trash.

2 out of 5 stars Too Many Characters, Slow Plot.......2006-02-27

There are three words to describe this book and I quote, "Stink. Stank. Stunk". Before I go on, I should admit that I haven't finished the book (and I don't intend to), but I have read more than half of it and skimmed through the rest. In my opinion you shouldn't have to read most of the book before it gets good.

I was looking for a book of action and intrigue, but overall there was a lot of talking and developing friendships. The book wasn't all bad but I was looking for "The Fugitive" and I got "The Joy Luck Club". If I was looking for this type of book I would have been happy and there are a few twists at the end. At first I couldn't put it down, but then I realized that was because I was waiting for the good part to show up--didn't happen.

The plot wasn't developed enough for my liking and I kept asking myself where is this book going? and more importantly, when is it going? Too many unneccesary characters took the focus off of the real plot. This book had too much build up that lead to no where and when the love scene did come about it was cursory at best.

I liked the basis of the book, I just wish it had been carried out differently. If you're looking for a book with a lot of action, you might want to look else where.

4 out of 5 stars Midnight Rain is a delight!.......2006-02-14

Four women with something in common come together with a purpose. Lupita Ochoa, Bridget McBee, Jane Whitley, and Gwen Bordovsky each have been attacked and nearly raped. Their bond? They all have been rescued by one gorgeous woman who leaves a calling card. Once each of their situations is under control, the woman in black flees the scene of the assault with the women's attackers locked safely in the trunk of her Maserati Spyder, and with police and paramedics on the way.

When these four women meet, they ban together to try to find the woman they call Kate the Lesbian because of the calling card she leaves behind. Their sole purpose is to meet "Kate" and thank her for saving their lives, but they soon find out that their rescuer needs a bit of rescuing herself. The police are focusing on the fact that their attackers have been kidnapped and are missing, and among the missing are two prominent men, a judge and a banker.

The women who have been helped by Kate are ordinary folks. One has only begun to think of herself as a lesbian while the other three are more comfortable with their lesbianism. However, none of them would likely strike out alone and end up doing the things that they do as a group in pursuit of their goal-to find Kate.

As the story unfolds, we find that Bridget and Lupita are the voices of reason. Jane and Gwen are spontaneous and impulsive. This combination leads them all on adventure that brings with it healing from the trauma of their attacks and new meaning in their lives as they try to help the mysterious woman who rescued each of them. Only by taking an extreme measure, suggested by Lupita, do the women finally get their first break toward finding Kate. At times their interactions are madcap, at other times, poignant. In spite of themselves, some among the group find romance in the midst of the growing chaos that ensues.

This story is an entertaining, easy read. The characters are interesting, all of them very different from one another. The entire story is told from Bridget's point of view, which is an interesting choice on the part of the author because she is the character with the most recessive personality. In the end, we find out that Kate the Lesbian isn't who we thought she was, and more importantly, that the four women have grown and healed during the course of their adventure.

Don't miss this new entry from Peggy J. Herring. It's a quirky, thrilling little adventure with twists and turns. It will make you laugh and make you sigh, but most of all, it will make you root for this unlikely bunch to triumph.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo! This is a book you cannot put down........2006-01-05

In Midnight Rain, Ms. Peggy J. Herring has demonstrated her great and ever growing talent as an accomplished author, and not one just limited to Lesbian Novels. Her use of deductive reasoning, consistent details, character development and plot weaving holds the reader's interest right up to the last surprise ending pages. I believe the strings of every human emotion have been played in this novel.
This whole story line begs for more tales; Perhaps, another intriguing adventure of wonderful characters like those found in Midnight Rain. Finally, I would like to add that this novel has been rated as "excellent" by both my gay and straight friends.

        Book Description

Ten million men died in World War I; millions more came home physically and emotionally scarred. Just beginning their life together, Johnny and Lizzie Mitchell face the devastating aftermath of the Great War. Johnny suffers from flashbacks and nightmares. Attempting to hide his shell shock, he distances himself from everything he loves, including Lizzie. Instead of his wife, Johnny clings to the ghosts of dead soldiers from his platoon for solace and understanding.

Set in 1919, Midnight Rain chronicles the struggles of a man and woman facing the scars and the drastically changing world after World War I in a desperate attempt to save their marriage, and Johnny's life. It is a novel about the horror of war and the redemption found only in love.

4 out of 5 stars The Price of War.......2003-11-05

Particularly in light of the continuing conflict in Iraq, it seems to me that books like Midnight Rain, which explore the cost of war, both on the soldiers involved in the battles and on those "waiting at home," are necessary reads. Midnight Rain's unflinching look at the realities of trench warfare and the psychological "no man's land" soldiers find themselves in on their return to civilian life reflects not only the tragedy of WWI, but also the reality of any transition from a world based on violence and death to the "civilized behavior" that defines American life. How does one come back from the world where dismemberment and death are a 24/7 possibility, and adjust to the routine of quotidienne life, the 9-5 grind, the possibility of love, a family, a house in the suburbs? It is these questions that Midnight Rain both asks and answers.

        4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2003-08-22

This was an interesting and entertaining book, with a lot of war scenes, but also a lot of story. I really liked the interaction between the flashbacks of the war and the story line of the couple's lives. Well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars A Novel about War and so much more.......2003-07-31

While the background for the story is World War I, the heart of this novel is love and redemption. And I don't mean the romantic, gooey kind of love. This is the love that makes men stand together under fire and fight to save one another. It is the kind of love that keeps a woman and man together despite violence and shell shock and horror.

The war is brought out vividly and realistically. And the effects of warfare on people - both soldiers and civilians - is movingly presented. Read this book.
