5 out of 5 stars Great for users and techies alike..........2007-02-09

I've often said that a good Dummies book allows me to get a broad understanding of a product or technology so I "know what I don't know". This title is a classic example of that... Microsoft SharePoint 2003 For Dummies by Vanessa Williams. It's a non-threatening use-focused coverage of SharePoint 2003 that is a good introduction to the topic at hand...

Contents:
Part 1 - Getting the Lay of the Land: Getting to Know SharePoint; Starting with the Basics
Part 2 - Central Portal Administration: Configuring the Portal; Accessing SharePoint
Part 3 - Portal Design: Matching SharePoint to Your Business; Managing Portal Content; Branding the Portal
Part 4 - Build It, and Hope They Come: Collaborating with SharePoint Sites; Document Libraries;
Part 5 - Power to the People - Engaging Employees with SharePoint: Managing Employee Relations; Mixing Up Your Marketing Mix
Part 6 - Throw Away the Spreadsheets: Expense Reports; Technical Uses for SharePoint
Part 7 - Maintenance: Monitoring SharePoint; Backup and Restore
Part 8 - The Part of Tens: Ten Ways SharePoint Adds Business Value; Ten Ways to Screw Up SharePoint
Index

Williams goes after two different audiences here, and I'm surprised she pulled it off. She targets the average power user who might have access to build a site on the SharePoint server. With this book in hand, I would agree that a motivated person could do quite well on their own. She also targets tech people who want an overview of SharePoint so that they can get started quickly. Normally you can't mix those two groups and come out with something that's acceptable to either. Again, I think she actually succeeded. If I were going to start building SharePoint sites for a user base, I'd have enough information here to get started with an adequate mental framework of how it all fits. I'm sure I'd quickly need the "1000 page book" (as she puts it) to start pushing the boundaries of what's possible. But for basic "I need something now" sites, I could do it with the help of this book.

I was also impressed that she dealt with the cultural issue of collaboration software. As a long-time Notes/Domino developer, I know and understand all too well that collaboration isn't something you can mandate or force on people. People who get it will gravitate around the software right away. Those who view information as power will horde it and refuse to participate. And it doesn't matter how good of a developer you are or how slick the site is. The application will fail... By addressing these issues, Williams sets a realistic picture of what to expect if and when you install SharePoint.

Good material, and a good way to get your feet wet on SharePoint 2003...

5 out of 5 stars Best book of its type on SharePoint 2003.......2006-12-22

I am a Microsoft trainer that has taught numerous SharePoint classes. Vanessa's work is the most straightforward intro book out there. She goes a step farther by including simple sample solutions for common issues. All this is a real help to someone trying to get things rolling. All SharePoint admins should keep several copies available.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up to the author..........2006-05-11

Being given the task of constructing an intranet for our company's service desk felt a bit daunting, but then being advised you're going to use Sharepoint 2003 (which I'd never heard of) just added to the pressure...

My initial reaction was that I needed to get "one of those books for dummies" on Sharepoint...I've never really liked reading and am still not the biggest fan, but Vanessa made it easy in the way she set out "Microsoft SharePoint 2003 for Dummies". You have the option or reading it from cover to cover, or jumping to the section that you're currently having an issue with. A real well structured and informative book.

After you've finished reading comes Q&A time...yes, if you have any questions for the author, she'll respond within a few days and be as helpful as she can...forget those geeks and professors that think they're high and mighty that they've written a manual or textbook, Vanessa is down to earth and will take the time to address your questions...I was semi-shocked when I received my first response, but then to receive a second, third and fourth blew me away...

So, for all you beginners out there, or even those that just need a point of reference, this book is a must for your shelf...

Being a Beginner and having to teach myself how to use Sharepoint, I was stymied by many of the technical books on the subject. Finding Sharepoint for Dummies helped alot! Vanessa Williams book is easy to understand and answered many of the questions I couldn't find answers to anywhere else. I still have a lot to learn about Sharepoint and Ms. Williams has been very helpful to shed extra light on difficult problems. Thank you very much for all your help!

4 out of 5 stars Better for the Administrator.......2007-09-13

This book is great for the SharePoint administrator. Unfortunately, I'm the user creating and populating the sites rather than installing the server. There are a few sections for the user at my level, but I'd anticipated a Dummies book wouldn't be for the techies. I also wish it had more screen shots to demonstrate things, but I suppose it would wind up becoming a 1000 page book then. It's fine for what it is, and I did pick up some tips, so it wasn't a complete waste for me. I found SharePoint 2007 User's Guide: Learning Microsoft's Collaboration and Productivity Platform to be a bit more practical for my needs. I still haven't found THE training resource I need to help others utilize SharePoint the way it was intended.

4 out of 5 stars Good to get you up-and-running.......2007-08-31

I was under the gun to assist a client in fine-tuning their new deployment of Sharepoint server 3.0. having alot of dba, lotus notes and asp.net experience helped, but this book is from where i pulled the specifics on WSS. it's a bit much trudging thru at first, but when you're 50-75% complete, you have a good understanding of administration and some development tips to get you started in the right direction. mostly, i found this book to be a solid reference guide to look back and quickly refresh myself with the specifics on how-to.

3 out of 5 stars SharePoint 2007 For Dummies.......2007-06-27

I ordered this text with the intent of creating and modifying team sharepoint sites. Primarily "end-user" kind of work, however this text is far more technical than what I need. It is more for system administrator, not site administrator. I have since ordered "Sharepoint Designer X for Dummies". I think that will be more what I am looking for but it is not yet available.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for SharePoint Administrators.......2007-06-15

This is a great book to get you familiar with what SharePoint offers and what it can do for your organization. The author covers everything from initial installation and configuration to setting up the SharePoint sites. She explains the terminology and concepts very clearly. Plus, she goes beyond the tech-speak and gives real-world examples of how SharePoint can be used and how to sell SharePoint to your organization (advantages for collaboration and communication). I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about SharePoint and/or has been tasked with installing and/or administering SharePoint. Before you read anything else on SharePoint, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-05-15

This book is the best way to get into a solid understanding of MOSS 2007 and all the features of WSS. The author is excellent. Once again she proves that she is the best in thE biz. Her 2003 book was solid as well. I believe that anyone would find incredible value in her delivery, insight and guidance. This book is a must have for anyone looking at SharePoint 2007. I have bought this for everyone who is looking at MOSS 2007 or I have told them to pick it up. You cannot go wrong. This book is the best SharePoint book hands down.

Book Description

A thorough revision to the Visual Studio 2005 All-In-One Desk Reference For Dummies makes this the ideal book for new programmers or Java programmers looking to get up and running with Visual Studio. The book will be a comprehensive, value-priced reference for the entire Visual Studio 2005.  Microsoft’s catch-phrase for Visual Studio 2005 is personal productivity. The goal of personal productivity is to allow the developer to work at a higher level of abstraction. The goal of this book is to show the reader how to build applications using these productivity features of VS. As a result, language syntax and programming constructs are de-emphasized in favor of showing the user how to let VS generate the code.

This book takes a layered approach similar to how most applications are architected. When developing a new application, developers often divide up the work for the user interface, service layer (data access), and domain classes (coding). Whether there is one developer playing all three roles, or three developers doing each, this approach allows the reader to easily reference the layer they are constructing. Minibooks include:

Book I: Visual Studio 2005 Overview.

Book II: Getting Started with Visual Studio.

Book III: Building Applications with Visual Studio 2005.

Book IV: Getting Acquainted with Data Access.

Book V: Coding.

Book VI: Going the Extra Mile.

Book VII: Extending the Family.

This book is big and full of rubbish. The examples are not useful and you have to read lots of pages to get a little bit of explanation which it could have been done with few lines. I would not recommended to anybody

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for anyone wanting to learn VS 2005.......2007-02-23

Well written and packed with useful info. I'm a Delphi programmer (trying to learn C# using VS) and this is my first VS 2005 book. You get a lot for your money with this book and the author's writing style is clear, concise and often entertaining. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent suggestions!!!!.......2007-09-10

This book is written with a tenderness that is lacking in other books on the subject.

This guide is complete and comprehensive. It breaks down each and every topic into language that the reader can easily understand. So many questions about cunnilingus that you may be too shy to ask, but have always wondered about, and this book answers them! It is an absolute must read for men of all ages. And it is a book that you never stop reading.

It is a definite recommendation for any man who is looking for an updated guide on sexuality and health.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but Nothing Special.......2007-09-10

You'd think after reading all the 5 star reviews on this book, that it would have amazing secrets that you couldn't find anywhere else. The reality is that all the oral sex books have pretty much the same information, which when you think about it shouldn't be all that surprising. This book is decent, but certainly nothing special. I think you can get better value for your money elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Finally A Real Master of Cunnilingus!.......2007-08-17

Thank God someone finally wrote a book about how to do cunnilingus right. It has made me a much better man when it comes to the oral sex. I dont know what i would do without this book. I have recomended it to all my friends and they can't wait to get it.

3 out of 5 stars THE INFORMATION IS THERE, BUT...........2007-04-04

The information is there and can be helpful, but it's sometimes hard to decypher, what with all the typos and grammatical errors. If this book had been properly edited, even by someone with a fifth grade education, it could have been condensed to half its length and still contain all the essential information.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Helpful!.......2007-01-31

This is the kind of advice women want you to know. Everything that you have always wanted to know on how to properly satisfy her can be found in this fantastic book!

From knowing how to give her the best oral sex, to giving her multiple orgasms, this book is a must read!

This is no definitive guide by any means but truly helpful!

3 out of 5 stars The Balancing act between Politics and Performing.......2001-07-15

I'm not really sure what I expected when I purchased a used copy of Vanessa Redgrave's autobiography. Maybe, it was to get a glimpse of an artist's perspective on acting. That certainly was not however what I ended up taking away from this bio. Rather, a wealth of information about politics and the Redgrave family is quickly thrust upon you within the first few pages. Once you sort out who everyone is, then you must go and cross-reference the political background of the times. This is where things started to get rough. Redgrave's writing is peripatetic and disjoiunted in style making it a difficult read. Once you get beyond the first few chapters however, her passion for politics and acting overwhelms you (in a good way) and you become caught up in the formation of her performing and political conscious.

The best part of the bio are the early letters she includes --written to both her father and various cousins-- which are witty, passionate, and illustrate perfectly the young Redgrave's thirst for knowledge and understanding. A warning to the potential reader: if you are not well-versed in the history of England, or the political parties or politics of the East, I urge you to consider some background reading in conjunction with this book as it is necessary to have a handle on some aspect of her writing before you attempt to follow her political path.

Book Description

Fascination with the Bloomsbury group continues unabated. This famous circle of friends-Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Vanessa Bell, Maynard Keynes, Lytton Strachey, Dora Carrington, Duncan Grant, and others-has become synonymous with devotion to the arts, acerbic wit, liberal ideas, and outrageous sexual frankness. In Bloomsbury at Home, for the first time, readers can experience this group visually-through their paintings, sketches, family photographs, and new photography of their homes and studios.

Pamela Todd takes readers inside this notorious circle of British writers and artists for an intimate look at their private lives, their elaborate parties, and their unconventional homes and domestic arrangements. Using generous quotations from their diaries and letters, Todd re-creates life among this memorable group of individuals who dared to defy the restrictions of polite London society at the turn of the 20th century-and who still arouse interest and curiosity today.

100 illustrations, 80 in full color, 8 1\8 x 10 1/2"

PAMELA TODD began her working life at Punch magazine in England. Throughout her career-as journalist, editor, author, and literary agent-food and art have been recurrent themes. Bloomsbury at Home is her tenth book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bloomsbury at Home by Pamela Todd.......2001-01-12

This is a truly wonderful book. Todd describes the homes of many of the people who participated in the Bloomsbury group, in addition to the complex interrelationships of the people involved, their parties and their artwork. She is one of the most focused biographers I have read: always interesting, always to the point. Considering the number of people she has to write about, it is amazing that she never strays from her focus. The book is beautifully designed and illustrated. It is a book that I will go back to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Bloomsbury in Your Home.......2000-06-24

Bloomsbury at Home is a welcome addition to the bibliography of titles about the very interesting, influential and eccentric group of artists who flourished in England and France during the early part of the twentieth century. These multitalented poets, writers, painters and thinkers lived life enthusiastically and shared ideas, activities and loves with each other and the world. Pamela Todd's extended essay on the Bloomsburyites, including Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf, Lytton Strachey and Duncan Grant captures their individuality, and sometimes irrationality, while celebrating their devotion to freedom of thought. The really spectacular and original contribution of Bloomsbury at Home, however, comes with the reproduction of a number of paintings and drawings by the Bloomsbury group, which are otherwise difficult to find gathered in one place. This book is a treasured and inexpensive addition to my library of literary and artistic movements, and I highly recommend it to others interested in the relationship of the visual and literary arts to modern society before the Second World War.

    3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2007-10-13

I've tried a few recipes so far and they have been easy to make but just okay to eat. I may think this way just because I have gone beyond this kind of cooking--I purchased it to help my young son deal with veganism. Hope springs eternal however and I will keep going and hope for some really good ones! I love to see people put their efforts into books like this and get published!! Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Veganism Rocks ... North, East, West & South.......2007-09-19

So many think that all they would eat would be salads & veggies if they chose a vegan lifestyle.

This cookbook dispels that concept with yummy recipes from traditional southern & western cuisines.

Choose a more peaceful healthy way of eating starting with this book & branching out to other cookbooks, transitional foods and vegweb.com for ideas & support.

    4 out of 5 stars INTERESTING RECIPES.......2007-09-18

This was a gift for a new vegan and she was anxious to try some of the interesting recipes

2 out of 5 stars Too many typos........2007-07-12

I didn't buy this book, because I clicked on the "See Inside" link above and read some of the recipes. When the bread recipe contains yeast in the ingredients list, and the recipe doesn't even mention yeast or when to add it, you know nobody proofread this. Plus, who needs pizza dough for 30 pizzas. It was the author's job to figure out the correct recipe for one or 2 pizzas, and pretest it.

5 out of 5 stars Two Zine-Style cookbooks in one!.......2007-05-14

I love this cookbook. It's my favorite vegan cookbook in my collection. The food is simple and uses a lot of readily-available ingridients. That and everything I've made from the cookbook is amazing. My favorite thing so far is biscuits and easy gravy from the Hot Damn and Hell Yeah! side of the book. But then, I'm a sucker for carbohydrate-loaded lumps of awesome smothered with salty, fattening goodness.

This is DEFINATELY worth the price. I'd reccomend it to all of my vegan comrades, new and old alike. Besides, what's not to love about southern-style vegan food?
