5 out of 5 stars Pure Bond.......2007-10-05

The Bond books are always fun and easy to read. They appeal to the adventure, gadget, and sex side to all men. It also often amazes me that women are interested in watching the movies, but I have yet to find a woman reader of the Fleming books. This book deals with Voodoo but is greatly aged when talking about gang activity and black culture. So, don't be surprised by a few nasty words here and there.

4 out of 5 stars The Return of James Bond.......2007-08-26

One of the distinctive characteristics of the James Bond movies has always been the opening credit sequence. Over the years, a number of big name artists have done songs for the openings, some of which have been memorable (such as Goldfinger or The Spy Who Loved Me) and others that are completely forgotten (can anyone but a true Bond aficionado remember the opening song in On Her Majesty's Secret Service?). If there is a truly immortal Bond tune, however - one that still gets plenty of playing time even three decades after the movie - it is Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die. The song may be well-remembered, but what of the book that inspired it? It may be one that many wish was best forgotten.

I say this not because it is a bad book; it is actually decent enough, but it has a view of race that is, to put it kindly, rather antiquated. The story sends Bond to New York to assist in stopping the crime boss and SMERSH operative, Mr. Big. Mr. Big is a large black man who - through his appearing as the voodoo figure Baron Samedi - appears to hold sway over most of the blacks on the East Coast and the Caribbean.

Bond teams up with his CIA friend Felix Leiter and the battle with Mr. Big is on, going from New York to Florida to Jamaica. Mr. Big's plot involves the smuggling of old gold coins from a pirate treasure as part of a plot to fund crime and Communism. Since it is a Bond story, there is a beautiful woman too, in this case, the fortune-telling Solitaire who Mr. Big intends to marry whether she likes it or not. Bond has other ideas.

I don't know if I'd go as far as to call this book racist, as Fleming doesn't seem to look upon blacks with contempt or believe they only merit a second-class place in society. He nonetheless resorts to stereotypes and treats the race as almost a monolithic unit. Of course, this is a fifty year old novel written before the Civil Rights movement really kicked into gear, and Fleming is a product of his time and place. What may have been relatively common writing at the time is now dated and may be unpleasant to many readers.

Still, in its context, this is a decent enough novel, rating a low four stars. The Bond of the first novel, Casino Royale, wasn't involved in much actual action, but here the bullets are flying and bombs are exploding. Already in the second novel, Bond is becoming more of the superheroic spy, although he is still human enough. If you are a fan on the Bond novels, then this is worth reading, but for a casual thriller fan, this might be one to skip.

5 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

Bond becomes more interested in Mr. Big, head of a voodoo operation in the Carribean, after he learns that he is working for SMERSH. He sees an opportunity to exact a bit of payback for the events of the previous book. It seems that Mr. Big may have found the pirate treasure of Captain Henry Morgan, and is using that for operational purposes.

He also gets to work with Felix Leiter, from the CIA. Mr. Big has a fortune teller that is a true psychic, named Solitaire. A beautiful girl, she works out what the two agents are up to, and they end up captured. Eventually they escape, and as Solitaire is a beautiful girl, Bond takes her too.

Felix Leiter is severely mauled by a shark.

That is not the finale, as Bond and Solitaire are captured again, and dragged behind a boat, designed to slowly bleed to death as coral and other sea things cut them. The bad guys wouldn't be sad if blood attracted sharks to eat 'em, either.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Book in the Series.......2007-06-01

If you enjoyed Casino Royale, then you will also like the next book in the series, Live and Let Die. I don't know what it was, but I think it is just a little less enjoyable than the first book. The reason being the way that Ian writes for the black characters, it is some times hard to read and understand what they are saying. Trying to get the accent of what all black people talk like, according to him, makes some of the lines unreadable. Such as, it will say something like 'I dun no bot dis bose' but worse.

Anyway, still a good story overall, but almost completely different from the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Voodoo Bond.......2007-04-29

Live and Let Die is the second book in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. I preferred Casino Royale, but this one is certainly a good Bond story. This time 007 is in the United States trying to deal with the dangerous Mr. Big, the leader of a well-organized mob dealing in drugs and smuggling. Bond is helped in his efforts to learn about Mr. Big's operations by the enigmatic and beautiful Solitaire. As was true in Casino Royale, Bond is also aided by Felix Leiter, the indomitable US CIA agent. The story leads from New York to Florida to Jamaica and has an outstanding ending as Bond once again saves the day under extremely perilous circumstances. The characters in the book are well written, but the book's descriptions of African-Americans are particularly dated since the book was written in 1954.
Read the book and enjoy Bond, but this was not Ian Fleming's best effort. Now on to Diamonds are Forever, the third book in the series.

The Women's Murder Club pits four San Francisco women professionals against a serial killer who's stalking and murdering newlyweds in bestselling author James Patterson's newest thriller. Lindsay Boxer is a homicide inspector who's just gotten some very bad news. She deals with it by immersing herself in her newest case and soliciting the personal as well as professional support of her closest friend, who happens to be the city's medical examiner. The two women, along with an ambitious and sympathetic reporter and an assistant DA, form an unlikely alliance, pooling their information and bypassing the chain of command in an engaging, suspenseful story whose gruesome setup is vintage Patterson.

"What is the worst thing anyone has ever done?" the killer muses to himself early in the narrative. "Am I capable of doing it? Do I have what it takes?" Answering his own question, he embarks on a murderous spree that takes him from the bridal suite in a Nob Hill hotel to a honeymoon destination in the Napa Valley and thence to a wedding reception at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Dispatching his victims on the happiest day of their lives, he purposefully leaves enough clues for his distaff trackers to discover his identity and put him behind bars. But just when the women think they've got the case all wrapped up, the killer turns the tables on them in a bloody denouement that even the most discerning reader won't see coming. Patterson, author of the popular Alex Cross mysteries, promises future adventures for the Women's Murder Club, which may give him an opportunity to develop his heroines' characters more completely and win new fans among those who prefer their detectives in high heels and lipstick. --Jane Adams

Its been a while since I had a good book to read..Very captivating and so many twists! Good read! Cant wait to read #2...

3 out of 5 stars Patterson not at his best.......2007-10-05

First to Die is a great read for an airplane or when in the mood for something very light. The prose is very direct, probably on an early high school reading level. The mystery is not very hard to figure out and most readers familiar with the genre will get it long before the ending. I would not rate this as highly as Kiss the Girls or most of the Alex Cross novels. Still, you can do worse than read First to Die to kill a few hours.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.......2007-09-27

It was actually a couple years ago that I first read this novel but I recently picked it back up and read it again and even though I knew the story line it was still a wonderful read, its suspenseful and twisted with a little side of sinister but also there is a real life appreciating lesson in the end of it all. I absolutely loved the first book...haven't gotten the other five in the series but I'm sure Ill get there because if they are anything like the first I will certainly enjoy them all. I definitely commend Mr. Patterson on his writing he is phenomenal.

4 out of 5 stars Riveting thrill ride.......2007-09-19

I had previously read When the Wind Blows and wasn't that intrigued by Mr. Patterson. Since it was more on the science fiction/fantasy side (which I'm normally not a fan of anyways) I thought I'd give this book a try. I have to say I was very impressed. It was by far one of the best mysteries I have read in quite some time. He created three-dimensional, interesting characters with emotional and physical struggles, a lot of suspense and intrigue, and kept you guessing until the very end. I thought that I had it figured out but I was wrong...

There was a little romance thrown in, with the heroine, Lindsay, falling for her partner, Chris Raleigh. But overall it was a riveting, edge of your seat, intense murder mystery/thriller. I hesitate to give it five stars because of the graphic nature and cringe-worthy details that were off-putting. Granted I understand why he described the crimes that way, they were grisly crimes but still some of the more suggestive details (i.e. position of body, etc) were grossly unnecessary. The ending was also too rushed- the epilogue especially, which seemed tacked on as an after-thought- making the intense scene unrealistic and anticlimactic. Other than that it was a thrill ride of a read and I am looking forward to reading more of the Women's Murder Club series. I am even more intrigued to see if the new TV show will be just as gripping (Fridays at 8pm on ABC starting October 12, 2007).

5 out of 5 stars Awesome....couldn't put it down........2007-08-11

I started this book in July and I am now on the fourth book in the series. I couldn't put it down and I still can't put the others down either. It was a great book and well written, totally held my attention. Loved it.

When Paulo Coelho (The Alchemist) was a young man, his parents had him committed to mental hospitals three times because he wanted to be an artist--an unacceptable profession in Brazil at the time. During his numerous forced incarcerations he vowed to write some day about his experiences and the injustices of involuntary commitment. In this fable-like novel, Coelho makes good on his promise, with the creation of a fictional character named Veronika who decides to kill herself when faced with all that is wrong with the world and how powerless she feels to change anything. Although she survives her initial suicide attempt, she is committed to a mental hospital where she begins to wrestle with the meaning of mental illness and whether forced drugging should be inflicted on patients who don't fit into the narrow definition of "normal." The strength and tragedy of Veronika's fictional story was instrumental in passing new government regulations in Brazil that have made it more difficult to have a person involuntarily committed. Like any great storyteller, Coelho has used the realm of fiction to magically infiltrate and alter the realm of reality. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Twenty-four-year-old Veronika seems to have everything -- youth and beauty, boyfriends and a loving family, a fulfilling job. But something is missing in her life. So, one cold November morning, she takes a handful of sleeping pills expecting never to wake up. But she does -- at a mental hospital where she is told that she has only days to live.

Inspired by events in Coelho's own life, Veronika Decides to Die questions the meaning of madness and celebrates individuals who do not fit into patterns society considers to be normal. Bold and illuminating, it is a dazzling portrait of a young woman at the crossroads of despair and liberation, and a poetic, exuberant appreciation of each day as a renewed opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars Dying equals a new lease on life.......2007-10-12

I picked up this book upon the recommendation of a friend, and finished it in less than a day. I can't remember the last time a piece of literature touched me so much. Thank God this is a slim paperback and relatively inexpensive, because I'm buying up several copies to distribute to friends whose perspective on life is in a state of flux.

"Veronika Decides To Die" is the story of an intelligent young woman who lives according to society's expectations. She is dutiful to her parents, respectful to others, goes to church.... and she wants to die, because a life governed by the expectations of others is a farce, and has reduced her to a breathing marionette. She overdoses on sleep aids, ends up in a Slovenian mental hospital, and is informed that irreversible damage has been done to her heart. She has five days to live at the most.

These allotted days turn out to be the only time in her life that she truly LIVES. Artistically, sexually, emotionally, she plunges into a series of explorations and adventures that allow her to become an independent being and not the product of societal expectations. While not advocating anarchy, author Coelho uses Veronika's journey to illustrate that total compliance with external demands doesn't only regulate existance- it also strips it of meaning.

Through the character of the hospital's chief medical officer, Dr. Igor, Coelho introduces the concept of a silent emotional killer called Vitriol. This phenomenon, which takes its name from a poison favored in medieval times by emperors, kings, and disenchanted lovers, sets in when, according to Coehlo, sufferers "build exaggeratedly high defenses against the outside world.... and leave their inner world stripped bare. It is there that bitterness begins its irrevocable work." Sufferers like Veronika find social rebels "a perennial source of fascination, for they... will forge ahead regardless of what other people say... and the embittered would spend many days and nights remarking on the absurdity and the glory (of their actions)." Like my friend, singer Pete Burns, once remarked, "When you go your own way, you become a mirror for other people's insecurities." He's right. I was guilty of the same tunnel vision before I unshackled myself.

I defy anyone to read "Veronika Decides To Die" and come away feeling the same about so-called normalcy. While Paulo Coelho does not, as previously stated, advocate anarchy and endangerment of one's self or others, he does encourage readers, through Veronika's example, to live each minute as if it might be your last, and treat your life like the precious gift it is.

4 out of 5 stars one of my favorites.......2007-10-03

I read this book in English soft cover edition and finished it last week.
This is the first book of Paulo Coelho that I've read.

Paulo Coelho tells empathically and very beautifully stories of different characters that converge into a one coherent and thought provoking novel. I have a problem with the title (Veronika Decides To Die) as naming it amongst your favorites might indicate that you might need to be looking for psychiatric assistance too :)

I did not like the ending as I found it to be of lesser standard than the rest of the book, but maybe it's just a matter of taste.
I have no doubt I'll try another one of his very soon...

1 out of 5 stars This isn't literature.......2007-09-21

This is NOT literature. If you thought the Da Vinci Code was a great book, you will probably like it. If you're into REAL literature, don't even try. Read something by Saramago instead, now that's a real writer.

3 out of 5 stars Lost in Translation.......2007-09-15

It's a good book with a great message overall. I just wish that I were fluent in Spanish, because I think that it would read better in the original language. It seems that stories like this often lose something in the translation. I would recommend this book. It is a pretty good read, a little strange at times, but so are the lives that it is portraying.

5 out of 5 stars A great story intertwined with life changing messages. .......2007-08-30

I was surprised at how this story began. How could a girl who believed she was completely normal, and not having any detrimental circumstances just decide to end her life? I think we all imagine (hope anyway) that there's a darn good reason for someone to do this kind of thing. I was surprised that the reasons could be as simple and complicated at the same time as Veronika's were.

Veronika fails in her suicide attempt and is placed in a mental hospital. She has a Dr. who convinces her she only has a week or two to live, while he secretly conducts an experiment to bring her out of her depression and give her the will to live.

As with all of Paulo Coelho's stories, there are many revelations throughout the story, one being that she actually did die to her old life and ways of thinking when she took those pills to begin with. While Veronika is in the hospital, her presence greatly touches and affects the lives of some other patients.

I'm not a speed reader, but I read this over the course of one day, (210 pages)and I enjoyed the story. There were many things that I read with chill bumps thinking that the author could have been speaking directly to me. Which is one of the many reasons why I love this author's books. He knows about life and how to relate and teach things through his stories. In the back of the book, there is an interesting section on the author's inspiration for the book and some personal insights about his experiences.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A light, entertaining read.......2007-02-21

What is so refreshing about Saylor's writing is that it is so accessible. Instead of having to wade through convoluted politics and the dense historical matter of Rome, he has simply portrayed the daily life of it's citizens in a refreshing and interesting way. Reading his books is relaxing rather than challenging, and a nice way to learn more about a fascinating period of history.

4 out of 5 stars Scrupulously Accurate Historical Details and Fun Stories.......2007-01-09

In 'A Gladiator Only Dies Once', Steven Saylor collects nine Gordianus the Finder tales he has written over the years. These stories are nice straightforward detective investigations with Gordianus as the upstanding honest gumshoe (gum-sandal?). His clients tend to be drawn from the patrician class of late Republican Rome - the supposed cream of society, but some of this cream has definitely spoiled.

Saylor is scrupulously accurate with historical details as he takes the reader to Sicily where he encounters Cicero and the secret of Archimedes' Tomb or to the luxuriant gardens and cherry orchards of the epicurean Lucullus. These are just two of the many historical characters in Saylor's stories. The resolution to Saylor's puzzles often lies not so much in the 'who did it', which is sometimes fairly obvious, as in 'why did they do it', generally a more interesting inquiry.

An appendix explains the provenance of each story and its connection to Roman history. A timeline of Gordianus' life will be a handy reference for fans of the Roma Sub Rosa series.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars 9 Stories about the Finder.......2006-10-03

Saylor has pleased me again with a fairly good portrayal of the Roman world and the limits of investigations into mysteries and crimes. I was slightly disappointed to not see Tiro mentioned more often given the number of guest appearances Cicero made -- the letters of Cicero to his secretary slave and freedman suggest they were rarely apart save when the orator and politican was in political disfavor or danger and none of these stories take place then. But these are short stories and need to be more focused on the immediate mystery at hand unlike a novel which can dive into the personal relationships and culture in greater degree.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting collection, but sometimes simple.......2006-08-11

This collection of short stories contains many great little stories which take place during the late republic. Though many of the mysteries are very thinly veiled, most of the stories provide a interesting insight into to the daily life in the Roman republic.

I especially enjoyed the Cherries of Lucullus. It seemed especially sad and vivid.

It seems that the author did get carried away in Death by Eros. The story is written as if it is exceedingly unnatural for a man not to be gay in Naples during the late republic. True, the story takes place in a Greek society where homosexual love was accepted, but I doubt that every man in ancient Greek society was spending all their time thinking tenderly of man-on-man action.

3 out of 5 stars Not at the same level as the rest of the series.......2006-08-05

I have to admit that i was dissappointed by Saylor in this book. One of the greatest assets of the "Roma sub Rosa" series is the masterful recreation of Roman society during Caesar's time. But when from the very first chapter, you see Lucius Claudius reading the "Daily" and talking about the "Reds" giving the "Whites" a run for their money in tomorrow's races... well, you get the idea of how these stories are written. You have this mottif of "americanising" the Romans through out the entire book.

The storylines and the characters also come off a bit shallow, but i guess that's to be expected from short stories..

All in all, Saylor's prose and writing remain excellent and the book makes a pleasant read.Just don't set your expectations too high...

5 out of 5 stars great read.......2007-08-21

All in all, this was a very entertaining read, with fantastic characters that came alive for me, especially the hero. The heroine is a great character as well, I just didn't like her that much. She seemed ditzy to me. Then there are hints that she is really very smart, just pretending to be ditzy to succeed in a man's world. I'm not sure if I'm too crazy about that idea in this day and age. But, hey, I'm sure it happens. I'm not sure I'd want to be best friends with her, but I did enjoy reading about her. That really says something for the author's skill. This is a fast moving, sexy story.

I love Linda Howard's books. This book is so unlike any of the others that I have read. It had me laughing out loud on the first page. Safe to say this is my favorite.

I just love Linda Howard books & this one did not disappoint. I knew from the first page that this was going to be an awesome book. It pulled me in instantly & I didn't want to put it down. The story line was thrilling & suspenseful. In real life Blair was not the type of person I'd like to hang out with but I thought she was a great storyteller (this book is in first person). I cannot tell you how many laughs she gave me. I love to have several good laughs in a book & I sure got them here. I didn't really get the impression that Blair was an airhead like another reviewer stated. She put on that act a few times but she was actually pretty smart & sly. I also don't see what's not to like about Wyatt. I really enjoyed everybody in this book & I can't wait to read the sequel, Drop Dead Gorgeous. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great! Great! Great!.......2007-10-10

I loved it. Engaging storyline, interesting characters, classic murder-mystery and suspense. I've already started his next one.

5 out of 5 stars Books plus Murder.......2007-10-09

Cliff Janeway strikes a great star for both bibliophiles and mystery fans. John Dunning's retired cop turned detective by way of an used bookshop in BOOKED TO DIE makes readers pay attention from the first line. The sold-out first printing established Dunning as a voice in the world of mysteries.
Books are secondary to great story telling power. It is the thrill of the hunt that drives Janeway into the moldy bargain basements looking for something special. Vintage books from a desirable estate collection appear on the market, but bodies proliferate and command attention.
This is a fine beginning for a classic series where readers can both enjoy and relish a new world away from spiffy mega-seller of books.
Nash Black, author of SINS OF THE FATHERS and TRAVELERS.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!.......2007-09-13

Once in a very long while I find a book and a series that grabs me right off the bat, and this book did that for me. Dunning is a wonderful writer. His characters are real, his dialogue crisp and the plot is tight. I could not put this book down once I started it. Cliff Janeway is an ex-cop that becomes an antiquarian book dealer. The references to fine literature and wonderful books was enough to really hook a bibliophile like me. And the mystery and story that came along with the lesson on book buying was wonderful too. This is a book that is from the hard-boiled genre, but the references to the books tempered that a bit. Dunning's characters are so very real, but the piece de resistance is Janeway himself. He's a tough, no-nonsense kind of guy, but with a softer side. He is always looking out for the underdog and the weaker sex if he finds them in trouble, and he makes it his personal business to rectify the wrongs that are bothering these people. He's intelligent, witty and sharp. I simply can't wait to read the next book!

4 out of 5 stars Fun and educational........2007-05-19

I really liked this one. I've read a few of the Cliff Janeway novels, and this is by far my favorite one. For those of you who don't know, Cliff Janeway, the main character of this series, is a cop turned book scout, who still spends some of his time solving mysteries. I think what I liked most about it was all the references to different books that Janeway comes upon. It made me want to look into many of them further. If you enjoy browsing through bookstores, you will probably get a kick out of these novels.

5 out of 5 stars The start of a great and unusual murder mystery series .......2007-02-02

After reading this finely crafted mystery, you will never look at 'books' the same way again! The author knows his books and book values, and takes the reader deeply into his world. I have now read the first five books in this series, and they just keep getting better. Unpredictable, with interesting characters that you begin to see and care about (or dislike) as real people. My wife and I are voracious readers, and as a side item, I actually cancelled my long-time book club memberships - will buy all future books that I may keep as First Editions at my local bookstores. Read this book to find out why!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The "Season Finale" of Runaways.......2007-09-27

Brian K. Vaughan really knows what he's doing. This volume, collecting issues thirteen through eighteen of the first run of "Runaways," ties up every loose end perfectly. The villainous characters that make up The Pride, the primary villains of the series, are finally--and gracefully--fleshed out.

The story, simple as it is (kids rush to stop their evil parents from sacrificing the soul of an innocent girl to giant monsters), will leave you satisfied with what you've got, though still wanting more. Also, instead of the straightforward good versus evil that many of Marvel comics offer up, "Runaways" is really all about ambiguity. No one in this story is pure evil; there are so many ways to interpret this story that it may in fact leave you pondering it for long after you put it down.

The story isn't perfect, though. Deus ex machina is heavily put to use here, from the convenient way that Chase both found and was able to operate his parent's "ship" as well as the sudden, unexplained appearance of a very popular Marvel hero at the end, who neatly brings things to a close. However, the story is simply tasty enough to ignore that. You don't get the kind of quirky fantasy-drama that "Runaways" brings to the table without a price, and the usage of deus ex machina in this volume was that price. In my book, it was more than worth it.

The final issue collected in this volume is one of the best comics I've read, period. There's not much action--though there is some--but it's a perfect wind-down if I've ever read one. That's a problem many writers have, whether it be in prose, comics, or script-writing. The wind-down of a story has to be equally as good as the climax, answering any questions that weren't answered at that climatic moment, and at the same time giving a little nod to every little plot thread that was addressed earlier in the work. Brian K. Vaughan, seemingly effortlessly, does that.

9/10

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Really excellent all ages superhero stories. This picks up again from the fist volume, with some unexpected about turns, some new revelations, some new antagonists, new locations, and run-ins with adults and other well-meaning types. The Runaways, of course, resist, thinking they know best for them. In this case, they probably do.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting, Shocking and Satisfying Conclusion.......2005-04-24

Wow. Where to begin without spoiling the whole story? The authors came through with one heck of an explanation for the Pride's evil doings. Realistic? Not at all. Plausible? Sure. The writing is excellent (even if I don't believe real teenagers talk this wisely and humorously, I believe these six do), the motivations believeable, the confrontation between the kids and their parents both touching and painful and action packed...and the unveiling of the mole was a real surprise. I thought I had it pegged and then had to revise my take on everything that went before. Was the ending a tad rushed? Yup. Did the mole spend too long explaining WHY they acted as they had? Uh-huh. Was the epilogue a little obvious? Oh yeah. Even so, this ol' children's librarian loved every page.

The story of the mythical hero Theseus, slayer of monsters, abductor of princesses and king of Athens. He emerges from these pages as a clearly defined personality; brave, aggressive and quick. The core of the story is Theseus' Cretan adventure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The King Must Die.......2007-09-28

"The King Must Die", as presented by Mary Renault, bids fair to be recognized as the greatest novel ever written about the life, morality and challenges of the era of ancient Greece. An astute reader will discover that Theseus does not kill a monster, but executes King Minos on private order by the King himself. An educator or mentor, with a knowledge of exegesis, can bring into focus a clash between the new and enlightened burgeoning democracy of Athens and the persistent pagan rituals of the then-dominant Crete.
Theseus rescues Crete from gluttonous conspirators, and hopes to take Princess Ariadne back to Athens as his bride. It is not to be.
We suggest that a tutor also read the sequel "A Bull From The Sea", to appreciate the ongoing struggle, by Prince/King Theseus to modernize the Aegean and point the way to our challenges today.

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Mary Renault's the King Must Die is a novel about Theseus. She tries to turn the story into something that could theoretically have happened, or almost, anyway.

So rather than fighting monsters, as a young man Theseus was a bull dancer, one of a trouple that did crazy stunts in a public arena involving acrobatics and large bovines.

The book is not completely devoid of fantasy though.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant on every level.......2007-08-16

The King Must Die and The Bull from the Sea were the first two books I read by Renault. I would place Mary Renault in the august company of only a few other writers (John Fowles, Umberto Eco, Iain Pears, Charles Palliser, John Crowley and Mervyn Peake) that I consider to be the most gifted of the past 50 years. Reading Mary Renault is like picking up an ancient manuscript and diving into the poetic beauty and brutality of the time. Her grasp and use of the English language is so powerful that you will feel as if you are reading something from another time. Since reading TKMD and TBFTS, I have collected every other novel written by Mary Renault. Exceptional without exception (is that an oxymoron?) I wish more people were required to read her work.

5 out of 5 stars An introduction to ancient Greece.......2007-08-12

Mary Renault has written these novels to bring the Greek myths of Theseus and the Minotaur to life. It is told in the first person and she manages to make real a period of history lost in the mists of legend. The novel was written 50 years ago but is timeless. It is highly recommended, as are all her novels of ancient Greece.

5 out of 5 stars Everything any reader could ask for in a story..........2007-02-19

This is one of Renault's finest novels in a multitude of great novels. The King Must Die chronicles the adventures of Theseus, the mythological King of Athens in a more or less realistic style, which by re-telling becomes the myth that has passed down to us through the ages.
As a young Theseus travels toward Athens to meet his father the king, who he has never seen, and claim his birthright, he is waylaid by the Queen of Eleusis and forced to wrestle the Year King (the loser is sacrificed to the goddess) for the dubious right to become the next Year King. Here Renault fills in the myth with a bit of unearthed history and conjecture; the legend of Theseus was ancient even when the Greeks dominated the Mediterranean world. Worship of the Helene gods, Zeus, Apollo, Athena and Poseidon were still in competition with the much older Earth Goddess of matriarchal societies.
Theseus is not one to merely waste his year lounging in the Queen's bedchamber doing nothing, besides servicing the Queen, so he characteristically turns the tables on her. The author seems to suggest that the myth of Theseus, who may or may not be a historical figure, gives us a rare glimpse as to how the old order might have been, for better or worse, usurped by patriarchal male dominated warrior society. But this is just one many exciting and fascinating epidodes in the life of Renault's Theseus, which continue in a second novel,"Bull from the Sea".
Another really enlightening aspect of this book is Theseus' devotion to the Gods. As in Gore Vidal's "Julian", Renault makes us see that faith in the Helene Gods was really not so barbaric, or remote or different from faith in the God of the contemporary religions. Phenomena such as earthquakes in the early Bronze Age could only be explained as the rumbling of the Gods, so that was the truth of the day, as truth is always subjective.
One of Renault's literary devises is for the narrator to tell their story as if the reader is their contemporary, thus will not explain in much detail things you would already know, but being readers from the 21st Century we often do not know! So you may have to puzzle over what you just read, perhaps re-read a paragraph or a page a couple times, but this is one of the traits that make Renault's books so engaging and intimate.
On the back cover of the paperback edition that I read (Bantum 1976) there is a short excerpt from a review by the Los Angeles Mirror-News, "A book that has everything any reader could ask for in a story". That summarizes my own feelings for "The King Must Die" perfectly.

FEMME FATALES

OBSESSIVE LOVE

DOUBLE CROSSES

How does a respectable young woman fall into Los Angeles' hard-boiled underworld?

Shadow-dodging through the glamorous world of 1950s Hollywood and its seedy flip side, Megan Abbott's debut, Die a Little, is a gem of the darkest hue. This ingenious twist on a classic noir tale tells the story of Lora King, a schoolteacher, and her brother Bill, a junior investigator with the district attorney's office. Lora's comfortable, suburban life is jarringly disrupted when Bill falls in love with a mysterious young woman named Alice Steele, a Hollywood wardrobe assistant with a murky past.

Made sisters by marriage but not by choice, the bond between Lora and Alice is marred by envy and mistrust. Spurred on by inconsistencies in Alice's personal history and possibly jealous of Alice's hold on her brother, Lora finds herself lured into the dark alleys and mean streets of seamy Los Angeles. Assuming the role of amateur detective, she uncovers a shadowy world of drugs, prostitution, and ultimately, murder.

Lora's fascination with Alice's "sins" increases in direct proportion to the escalation of her own relationship with Mike Standish, a charmingly amoral press agent who appears to know more about his old friend Alice than he reveals. The deeper Lora digs to uncover Alice's secrets, the more her own life begins to resemble Alice's sinister past -- and present.

Steeped in atmospheric suspense and voyeuristic appeal, Die a Little shines as a dark star among Hollywood lights.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A stylish noir.......2007-08-26

Although I'm a big fan of noir films, this was my first noir novel. What a treat! Abbott's style has a dreamy, poetic quality, yet she manages to move the story forward at a rapid pace. All the characters are rich and complex, and the period details are great fun. I look forward to reading more of Abbott's work.

5 out of 5 stars Cerebral Retro-Noir .......2007-04-24

The storyline to this stylish noir set in 1954 is simple. Lora King, a Pasenda schoolteacher, lives with her younger brother Bill, one of the D.A.'s bright investigators. Their lives hum along until Alicia Steele, a costume designer for the Hollywood movie crowd, enters the picture. Alice steals Bill's heart and they wed. Lora, jealous and maternally protective, discovers Alicia's past is dark and pitted with sadistic boyfriends, narcotics usage, and possibly murder. As seen by others, Lora and Alice are companionable as "sisters", but looks are deceiving. The lush descriptions recreate the underbelly of Hollywood. But the contemplative and careful Lora narrating this lurid tale offers a noir where readers can observe as much going outside of as inside of the main character.

5 out of 5 stars A Velvet Punch of a Read.......2006-12-01

A heck of a debut, a heck of a book. These characters sparkle in dark glamour, the writing slides you into a lost time, a lost place. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The dark side of Hollywood..........2005-04-11

This was a great read! One I had a very hard time putting down. Set in 1950's Hollywood, it explores the dark, twisted lives of high powered studio men, call girls, drugs and murder. Bill and Lora are siblings living in quiet suburbia in Pasadena. He's a cop and she's a school teacher. Then Bill meets vivacious Alice Steele when her car hits his. A friendship blossoms, and soon after a relationship. The two marry, buy a house, and settle into simple lives.

In the beginning all is well. Lora is happy for her brother and loves having sophisticated Alice around, who throws lavish neighborhood parties and is always in the spotlight. But soon Lora starts to notice little things that don't seem quite right. Dark edges around sweet Alice...who is Alice really, and where did she come from?

As Lora gets deeper and deeper into the trenches of shady Hollywood, she begins to realize that she's getting caught up in everything, she's beginning to change from the mundane schoolteacher into something else, something bad. Can she figure everything out before it's too late? I've gotta say I really recommend this book. I initially picked it up because of the era it's set in, but the story really grabbed me. Definitely give it a try...you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars A fun noir romp.......2005-03-22

The pages of this book fly by, filled with all the dark, dangerous, drugs and sex riffs from the 1950's. When you need something light and engrossing, this book is a "sinister" diversion.

Book Description

Some skeletons just won't stay hidden.

No one knows that better than University of Georgia archaeologist Lindsay Chamberlain. Still, she is shocked when a skeleton dressed in its Sunday best falls out of a packing crate that had been stored in a kudzu-covered shed on her grandfather's farm for more than sixty years. When other crates are discovered, each containing a stash of valuable artifacts, Lindsay begins to wonder. Could her beloved grandfather, a prominent archaeologist, have been a thief, a looter-even a murderer?

As Lindsay struggles with these troubling questions, she helps a local private investigator locate the wooded grave of Shirley Foster, a missing faculty member. 5 out of 5 stars Lindsay Chamerlain great detective.......2007-03-13

I honestly only started reading the Lindsay Chamberlain series because I had read all the Kathy Reichs, Patrica Cornwell etc books. Never did I think that any writer could be as good as thiers. But I am hooked after the first book I had to get the rest. I love the character Lindsay and her interactions with others. How she gets herself in trouble so much cause she cant say no to a good mystery.

Wonderful read and have already recommended this series to other people. Cant wait for her new one Kill Site to come out. waiting in anticipation.

5 out of 5 stars thrilling suspense.......2005-03-29

3rd in the Lindsay Chamberlain series, the story begins with Lindsay sniffing through a field looking for a missing art teacher from the university where Lindsay works. Finding the woman is one of Lindsay's few pieces of luck, though, as various household expenses keep adding stress to her finances. On top of that, she's worried about the possible upcoming merger of departments at the university; as a non-tenured faculty member, she could be job hunting soon. In the midst of all this, Lindsay's brother shows up unexpectedly with a truck load of her grandfather's leftover property - crates from a shed in his backyard, a shed of which no one was aware. If Lindsay didn't have enough on her plate, they find a skeleton in one of the crates, and then artifacts are discovered to be missing...and Lindsay seems to be the main suspect.

5 out of 5 stars A little Indiana Jones, a little Sherlock Holmes.......2004-03-27

Look out Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs. Beverly Connor's books are as good as anything written by the two reining queens of forensic science. Connor's heroine is a combination of Sherlock Holmes and Indiana Jones. Her books are fast paced and extremely entertaining. If you like archaeology or forensics, or if you just plain like a good mystery, give Beverly Connor's books a read. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars The best!!!.......2001-09-19

Beverly Connor is a jewel of an author who has yet to be discovered by the masses. But she will be. No mystery writer this good can go long without topping the bestseller list. In this installment of her Lindsay Chamberlain series, Beverly does it again with clever twists and turns and sharp writing. She's a smart writer for an intelligent reader. I never read a Connor book without learning something and, quite frankly, that's the kind of fiction I like to read. Buy this book and I promise you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Another triumph for Lindsay.......2000-10-11

Lindsay Chamberlain never invites danger into her life; it just happens upon her frequently like an unwanted guest. In this tale Lindsay is in danger...this time of losing her job at the University of Georgia's Archaeology Department due to a merger with another department. If that were not enough to worry her, a cache of priceless artifacts delivered to her by her father is stolen, and all eyes are on Lindsay. Lindsay also becomes involved in the murder case of a long-missing UGA professor whose skeleton is recently found? Friends and strangers linked to Lindsay are either injured or killed trying to help, and Lindsay must put together all of the strewn puzzle pieces before she is next on the hit list.

I have enjoyed Beverly Connor's series for many years; Lindsay Chamberlain is one of the most original and dynamic sleuths to have been created in recent years, and Dressed to Die is well worth the cover price.
