Errors in previous review.......2007-08-24

I'm the author of this book, so I watch the reviews, albeit a little late on this one. I've been busy authoring a book on how to build Windsor racing engines.

None the less, Shane Edwards said in his review, "Following the instructions contained in this book will ensure the speedy failure of your valvetrain." From this statement, either Mr. Edwards was reading the wrong book (giving him the benefit of the doubt) or he doesn't know the proper way to do valve jobs or set up valvetrains. I gave several methods of reconditioning heads and valves, including how to check springs and setting up the valvetrain. I warned against quick-fix methods, but opted instead for methods to give better than original life.

A telling statement Mr. Edwards made was, " He should try to write one book that tells you how to do the job correctly and find an editor who can eliminate the plethera of spelling and grammatical errors that rittle his work." I can assure you, all methods are discussed and shown being done correctly. From a review made in Road & Track Magazine, the reviewer said, "If you can't rebuild your small-block Ford using this book you're using it as a coffee-cup coaster." As for editing, Bill Fisher aka California Bill, the Publisher and editor of HPBooks at the time had a reputation for being the toughtest editor on the planet . . . literally. So nothing got past him or the experts who read the book. That's not to say an error or two got into print, but they've been corrected a long time ago.

For really hardcore racing information on engine building, which includes valvetrain setup and all other aspects of the process, my book "The Racing Engine Builder's Handbook" is now available. The Windsor Ford Race engine book is in process.

Mr. Edwards is right about one thing. This is not an FE engine. That's the big block. Steve Christ wrote that one. Clevelands and M-series engines are part of the 335-series of Ford engines and the 385 series makes up the 429 and 460 Ford engines. These are covered in the Ford V-8 book, all of which are available from Amazon.

Great Rebuild How-to.......2007-02-08

This book is an excellent guide to rebuilding small-block ford engines (sbf). Written by experts with years, this book is written specifically about rebuilding the sbf. Anyone who is rebuilding an engine would find this book useful because of the large amount of general wisdom about rebuilding.

Starting with how to assess whether the rebuild is needed, and a discussion of the tools and skills required, the book can help keep you from getting into a project that is beyond one's abilities or desire to complete. There is also a thoughtful section on hopping up engines, since the time to do it is during a rebuild.

Various options for levels of quality of parts to use as well as the decisions around how much machineshop time to use are discussed. Finally well ilustrated and very detailed step-by-step instructions take you through the full rebuild from tear-down to build-up and through reinstallation in the vehicle.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is contemplating rebuilding an sbf. The combination of detailed instructions with thought-provoking advice will go a long way in helping to create a successful rebuild.

Good for who want to rebuild a stock engine. To get a litle perfomance tuneup you have to find it into another book.

A reasonable book to start with........2006-03-29

This book has been around a lot longer than most books.It does offer a lot.A good guide from inspection of your engine to assembly,installation and tune up.Tom Monroe writes in an easy to understand way.His books are helpful so you wont be wasting your money.Plenty of information throughout make this a reasonable book despite its age.The 351C isnt included in this book.

Its a good book and is worth adding to your collection.Good value.Its 3.5 stars as there are newer books out there that offer more.

Good Job.......2007-06-10

Impressed with this book even at my advanced years. Excellent information and PRACTICAL guidelines on rebuilding 351C, 351M, 400M, 429 and 460 engines. Generally I dislike these types of books because they tell you to use this special too or that special tool but this book teaches you how to use what you've got to get the job done. It does try to show you what things to not try yourself without a machine shop and that is fair enough but most of the rebuilding tips are for the shade tree type guy and are fair game. Good job Tom, this book will remain on my bookshelf for a long long time.

The book "Ford V8 Engines" is full of helpful information on rebuilding Ford engines. As a first time rebuilder, I was not exactly sure what procedures to follow in order to be successful. The Information within the book is easy to understand and is thorough. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in rebuilding Engines.

This book is about rebuilding 351c,m,400m, 429 and 460 motors. It is not a how to hot rod book. It is a detailed how to take it apart and put it back together right book. The author show with fairly good pictures the normal short coming of other overhauls and steers the reader on how to avoid these. I enjoyed reading this book and will keep it for reference if nothing else.

Wrong years & outdated.......2002-10-23

I purchased this thinking it would work for my 90 Bronco, but it is for older engines. Beware of this book it is outdated for newer engines.

I am in the process of returning it, and boy is that a hassel in it's self.

This is a great book for anyone wishing to rebuild any of the engines this book covers.I used it years ago when I built my first 460.It is easy to read and understand.I would also recommend "THE STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO ENGINE BLUEPRINTING" by Rick Voegelin.

Tom Ford's Most Magnificent Project Yet.......2007-04-17

There is no doubting that Tom Ford is the sexiest man on the planet, there is no doubting the man is one of the most talented designers. But this booklet culminates into one of the greatest publishing works I have ever seen. I was mesmerized by the packaging, intrigued by many of his choices for photographs to use and left saying, I would wear his clothes any old time. He was one of the first designers who brought sex to high fashion. I've been a tough critic many times on many publications but this one is by far the most oustanding and innovative and individual work of publishing that I've ever seen. Of course could we expect any less from Tom Ford, who has done nothing but outstanding projects from the time he left the Texas town he came from? This man is one of the greats of our time. I just hope he continues to succeed. Thanks! And by the way, buy this book, it is well worth every penny and it's a great conversation piece for any dinner party. Put it out on the coffee table and watch the fingers flip through the most glossy and elegant pages of any published work yet.

I got the TOM FORD book for Christmas and I absolutely love it. If you are a fashionista, like me, you must have it. The pictures are incredible, the interview is fascinating and overall its a great book. Ford is a very savvy businessman and designer. Always thinking ahead of his time. Foremost his character and his trajetory with Gucci inspire anyone to work harder and be a successfull person regarless if you are in the fashion industry or not.

Whatever happened to American Motors Corporation?

I guess you either love these guys or you hate them. My wife finds them incredibly annoying when she hears them on the radio.

Myself, I love them. Their accents are not off-putting to me, and I love how they laugh together.

What I've learned over time, though, is that the 'straight' answers they provide are actually pretty authoritative. They actually know what they're talking about, based not only on their extensive formal education but also based on their hands-on work with many, many cars.

If I personally found anything annoying, it's only their constant self-referencing which gets old. However, it's a part of their "shtick" which we would not want to do without...

So who's from Toyota??

This books description on the rear cover and in the publishers description indicates that "every aspect of restoring a 1946-1967 Ford pickup is covered in detailed text that's full of how-to advice from expert restorers". I can only say I think NOT. This IS a good book, with lot's of good GENERAL info, and lot's of good advice, and I'm sure most of the contributors are experts in some or all stages of restoration, but this book covers every aspect of restoring not one of the model years listed, LEAST of which is the 1965 and later models. This particular period (67) is exactly what I was looking for info on. I found that this book covered many general areas of the type/style equipment found on the models of truck listed, and had picktures of many of the models listed, but had specific info about almost NONE of the models listed.

Very good detail and lots of great original information. Very good how to for restoring any classic Ford truck. One of the best I've seen for restoring my trucks (46's & 47)and any other old Ford truck.

How to Restore Your Ford Pickup.......2001-02-15

Before starting a rebuild of my '51 Ford pickup, I accumulated as many manuals and other written materials as I could. Brownell's book helped me to understand the crucial difference between a restoration and a rebuild, and to plan my work accordingly. I'm sure that the job will take longer and cost more than I'd hoped, but I'm equally sure I'll be happy with the end result, due in large part to the wisdom imparted by this book...

For example i have been looking for a chasis diagram for a 1977 ford f-150 custom for 8 days and no one will let me look an a manual and print out a page. think you for your assistance. This is a great book. Ron Galella took very chic, very flattering black and white photos of STARS when the world actually had STARS - not the tabloid trash that we have today. Great printing and art direction - a classic.
