Book Description

The first collected work of the LA underground art world's favorite wunderkind, Elizabeth McGrath. 112 pages of full-color photos and detail shots reveal the exquisitely complex details of her sweetly twisted creatures, giving a glimpse of what the City of Misfit Toys might have become had it been saved by Satan rather than Santa. Upon first viewing, McGrath's colorful, mummified creatures are gothic oddities, but their undeniable artistry immediately draws one in, revealing their touching curiosities, transforming their grotesqueness into tortured beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration and Magic.......2007-07-29

This one really knows her own niche, and it is fantastic! I love this book and I'm mesmerized and inspired by the metaphors, and hysterical and haunting irony she poses with her art, photographed beautifully in this book. Everything she does has so many elements to it, you could look at each piece over and over and bring something new to your analysis of it. If you aren't someone who analyzes art, though, it's just as fabulous for the visual effect. This woman merits all the attention she's gotten in Juxtapoz and on the art scene, because she is clearly dedicated, to the core, and her artistic and socially expressive creations are pure gold. I would love to find more artists that measure up to the bar she's set for this kind of work, so I can suck up the inspiration and drown myself in it, until it's coming out my ears. Yes please.

I bought this book for my friend as a birthday gift. And the next day I bought another one for myself cuz the book is really fantastic! I wanna share it with my other friends who like creepy things. The details are so delicate that I could spend hours reading it. Highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for fans of Liz McGrath.......2007-02-09

This book is really great for the close up photos of Elizabeth's work and gives you background information on her.

5 out of 5 stars creeps glorious creeps.......2006-11-16

This is one of those books that I stumbled upon while store-browsing and passed up, and kicked myself later for not snatching it up immediately. My shelf was lonely until it arrived in the mail. That's how cool this book is.

For the uninitiated this is a collection of photographs of mutated animal/insect sculptures and dioramas, little creatures dressed up like sailors and prostitutes, stuff of that ilk (they have a very Grand Guignol feel). They're crafted beautifully and, true to the book's title, creepily, but adorably so. Fans of the Nightmare Before Christmas characters and asthetic will probably love this stuff.

McGrath's work is downright amazing, I just wish this book were a little thicker.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Imagination.......2006-11-04

A very inspiring book for artists with an imagination "outside of the box".

2 out of 5 stars Not for kids..........2007-06-17

This book is only so-so as a drawing book, whether for beginners or more advanced artists. The pictures are weird, and not aesthetically pleasing, even for monsters. However, this is definitely not a book for kids. The pictures are frightening enough to give kids nightmares. Think horror. Not a very useful book.

3 out of 5 stars Pink?.......2007-05-09

I ordered the library editions of this book for my grandson and another little boy and I was surprised that a "draw your own monster" book would come with a pink cover! I was also a little disappointed in the array of superheroes, but I'm sure copyright restrictions made it necessary to exclude Superman, Spiderman, Batman and so on. This is a case where actually seeing the book before purchasing would have been a help. Vona Van Cleef

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-01-26

I can't draw very well, so I bought this book to improve my drawing. This is a Great book for beginners! Gives you an idea how to start off and how it should looked finished! Awesome book as a "get started guide type". And After you got the idea of how to start to draw the monsters you can create your own. Perfect idea for kids that love to draw!

5 out of 5 stars Great basic drawing book for the young AND young-at-heart........1997-02-22

Lee Ames does another excellent job, as he does with his entire "Draw 50" series. His step-by-step format is easy to use and quite rewarding as well. Ames is the only drawing artist that simplifies the drawings so that anyone can follow and become adept at drawing intriguing figures. This particular edition contains a great variety of characters to draw and will be on and off any doodler's bookshelf for years

It analyzes microstructural effects on plant performance, component and plant designas well as the performance of weldments and creep/fatigue interaction. Many chapters offer never before published data on materials for power plantsas well as techniques for assessment. Original data is presented from the Advanced Creep program, including defect assessment of high-temperature and multi-axial components, creep crack initiation (incubation), and growth assessment. The 1,131-page book contains key analyses of design and life assessment as these relate to creep and fracture in many high-temperature components in power plants, piping, and other high-temperature environments. The chapters are based on presentations made at the EEEC Creep Conference, organized by the European Creep Collaborative Committee.

    4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-12-12

I love the Lily series. I have 3 books. Those are the only ones that I have read but they are great. I loved this book. Even though Shad and Lily don't get along, Lily saved his life.

    3 out of 5 stars questionable.......2004-12-31

I actually decided to reread this book, just for fun. I cannot believe that my first review convieniently forgot to mention a huge flaw with this book. As I stated in my previous review, the story is about Lily Robbins and Shad Shifferdecker, the guy at her school who constantly likes to torment her. Well, Lily and the Girlz decide to teach Shad a lesson. Reni supplies the gloves, Suzy the industrial adhesive, and Lily the plan-and the girls are off to pull their latest prank-one where Shad and his cohorts are left dangling from the monkey bars, permanently attached-thanks to the girlz. Only Lily and Shad get to take the fall for the awful pranks they AND THEIR FRIENDS pull off all the time. This was where I had a problem with this book. After the prank, Lily's parents stress how it was the right thing to do to respect her friends so much that she is left to take the fall for them all alone. Where, oh where, in the Bible does it mention that you should take the fall alone for a prank involving four others and a possible lawsuit to a school for harm inflicted on three boys? Had this been real, and any girls pulled this prank, and the boys had not been able to be detached without bodily harm, there would have been a lawsuit and Lily would have most likely been carted off to Juvie! It is books like this one that enforce the dumb idea that you are not to speak up about anything. No wonder I had that mentality when I was Lily's age. Its just not cool to rat your buddies out, and now its cool for the parents to enforce school bullying and stereotypes. What is even worse is that Leo, Daniel, Reni, Kresha, Suzy, and Zooey are still fighting like cats and dogs while Lily and Shad are grounded and on borderline suspension. A prank pulled by Lily and Shad's cohorts nearly leads to the deaths of Shad and Lily, who are looking for Daniel and Leo, who are being tormented by the girls (Shad and Lily thought they had fallen into the river).
This book still has memorable moments. Thankfully, the girlz finally speak up. Shad and Lily begin to get along. Lily decides not to seek vengeance on her pals for ditching her and influences Shad and his buddies at the same time. But much of this book is overshadowed by the fact that Rue is attempting to be cool by enforcing an honor system that everyone between the ages of five and thirty lives by. As far as I have read, I have never found anything in the Bible that says its kosher to take the fall for a prank so big that it could have brought on a legal battle. There is tattling, which is always annoying, and there are times where you should speak up. Lily should have spoken up. Skip this book-go on to the next in the series. If your daughter wants to read this explain how there is a time when your should fess up that you were not alone in a prank and that there is no scriptural basis for the "honor system" everyone has that is under thirty. The bulk of the book does have scriptural basis-but the whole notion of taking the blame all your own when your principal, teacher, peers, and parents all know you did not act alone is just ridiculous. Lily could have saved her and Shad's lives and this book would have been shorter had she ratted her "friends" out.

Lily's back but now she and creepy eyed Shad have to do a progect together when they both get in trouble. Will Shad and Lily become friends or even enimies more than ever.

Engineering Damage Mechanics is deliberately oriented toward applications of Continuum Damage Mechanics to failures of mechanical and civil engineering components in ductile, creep, fatigue and brittle conditions depending upon the thermomechanical loading and the materials: metals and alloys, polymers, elastomers, composites, concretes. Nevertheless, to help engineers, researchers, beginners or not, the first two chapters are devoted to the main concepts of damage mechanics and to the associated computational tools.

This book is definitivly too coincise for my taste. Dont't try to use it for self-study, It's a waste of time. I suppose that the previous book by the same author is better suited for a plain reading. Anyway, you can find (spread out the book) many clever triks and suggestions hardly written elsewere.

        5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-06-22

simply the best book out there.
recommend starting with "a course on damage mechanics" for a better introduction.

        5 out of 5 stars Poetic Injustice.......2001-06-13

Out of all of Sala's works I have read so far, this is the most clearly inspired by Edward Gorey. Although Sala's art has a style all its own, this book copies the usual Gorey format with a series of illustrations (one on each double-page spread) accompanied by rhyming text telling short, humourous nasty stories (the same sort of tongue-in-cheek horror fun for all ages of a Vincent Price movie). I personally prefer Sala's short stories aimed at an older audience in traditional comic book format, but this book is still a howl.

In this collection are four stories:

"The Ghastly Ones" is about a bragging master detective detailing the modus operandi of a rogues gallery of fiends he has locked to the lascivious delight of a boy obsessed with crime. "The Morbid Musings of Malcolm de Mulch" is about a young man obsessively contemplating the many ways he might unfortunately meet an untimely demise. "The Skulkers" is a series of portraits of various fiends not unlike the first story, but the mini-poems are each told from the fiends' own points of view. Lastly "Beware, Beware" is about an old woman warning her young grandson that they best keep themsleves locked indoors because of all the dangers that face them in the city at night. All but "The Skulkers" (which isn't really a story) has a twisted twist ending.

My one complaint is that it takes only minutes to read through the whole book, but it is still one that will be treasured by fans of Sala or dark humour, and I'm sure most young readers would get perverse delight from it as well. This is the type of fun book that encouraged me to read books when I was young because it is so "cool".

5 out of 5 stars My 2 year old son loves this book.......2003-08-07

We checked this book out of the local library, but I will need to purchase this book now. We have read this book for a week now several times each day with at least 2 readings per sitting! I have no idea why he loves the book. My guess would be the pictures and the rhyming words. I do think it's a great book.

        4 out of 5 stars Don't creep off now..........2000-06-27

This book contains a very simple story that small children will find touching. The simple text allows children with short attention spans to enjoy the story without getting distracted. The simple illustrations also work very well for young children without providing too much visual stimulation. I believe that the age level listed for this book is a little high. It is definitely geared toward little ones.

5 out of 5 stars Simply excellent !!.......2007-06-18

I'm a graduate engineer, struggling with the reality of the world of work. Luckly I came across this book in the company's library and in no time I was designing to the satisfaction of my supervisors. Indeed this book has helped me alot. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is similar to me. I also recommend this to all undergraduates who need help in understanding reinforced concrete design. It would be very helpful and time saving when doing those design projects. .

5 out of 5 stars Must have for learning concrete design........2007-06-01

While struggling to understand fundamental concepts during concrete design, this textbook came through like a hero. One classmate bought the book, then four other students (the "brightest")in the class bought it. Let's just say, it really is that good.

The examples were clear and logical. The book works well enough to self-teach.

5 out of 5 stars Design of Flexurer,Shear,Sabs,Columns...etc........2006-08-17

I just have finished a course of Fundamentals of Reinforced Concrete and this book helped me to understand far more than I expected.First I borrowed it from library then I bought a copy of it.It is full of examples and well organized. All I want to say if you have a problem mastering Fundamentals of Reinforced concrete design you should look at this book.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST book on Concrete Design.......2004-09-30

This is by far the best book on Reinforced Concrete Design. It is the most EFFICIENT way of learning the subject. It has theory, but it is also reinforced by plenty of examples and diagrams. For example if you want to learn rectangular footing design, it will take you less than 2 hrs for study, review and thorough understanding. The other plus of this book is it covers unusual but needed topics like stair design, balanced footing design and concrete pile caps methodology. Finally Dr. Hassoun also refers to the ACI code and blends it seamleesly with equations and examples and has SI problems as part of the book.
