Book Description

This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls “Anne Lamott's hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister”) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Worth It.......2007-10-18

I really enjoyed this book and while envied the authors' ability to travel at length, agree that the search for self-love and acceptance is, in actuality, the opposite of selfish. I am thrilled that this author found limitless compassion and understanding for herself through her spiritual practice as she then was able to extend that same compassion and understanding to those around her. In her courageous honesty about her own feelings of superiority, judgment, lonliness, anger and despair she allows her reader to relate without shame. And if we let ourselves, we can all relate. We are all human beings.

5 out of 5 stars Read - Travel - Grow.......2007-10-18

Who among us hasn't come to know on a somewhat intimate basis our bathroom floor, or whatever other surface has served to collect our tears. That's where we join Elizabeth Gilbert. Where we separate from her is in what we do about the circumstances that bring us to tears. Gilbert's solution was to look for herself through food and friendship in Italy, fellowship and spirituality in India, and growth and love in Indonesia. While most of us don't have the means to take a year off to find ourselves, the path Gilbert travels in her mind, heart and body can serve as a road map for many even if you travel no further than the bounds of your own home town.

The book is an easy read, written in a combination journal/travel log format. A bit more complex are the stages and changes through which Gilbert transcends. Her sense of humor is glorious and significantly adds to the enjoyment of her adventure - for both herself and her readers.

If nothing else, Gilbert's book serves as a reminder to women everywhere (perhaps men as well, although I see this as a she-book) that you can move beyond staying trapped in an unhappy situation, even if it does come with all the right trappings. This is a book that you read and then pass along to that friend we all have who needs a little help packing her suitcase and filling out those change of address cards. Personally, I've already wrapped two copies as Christmas presents for my daughters because I can't think of a better gift for any mother to give than encouragement to eat, pray and love!

2 out of 5 stars More like a magazine article than a novel.......2007-10-18

After forcing myself to finish the book, I can't really call myself a fan. Eat, Pray, Love starts out great in Italy, but by the time Liz hit India I was struggling to get through the chapters. I think I was so uninterested because I couldn't relate to her. I've never experienced Yoga or meditations or any Indian beliefs, so I couldn't understand what she was doing. I was also getting annoyed by her descriptions of herself--blonde, thin, perky, easily able to make friends...even her problems and "faults" turn out to be okay and accepted by her in the end. I can't relate to a Homecoming Queen. I was also rolling my eyes at her heartbreak over David. You would think she would be upset and broken hearted about her ex-husband, not a fling she had afterward. But, she doesn't give us enough background on either of them to understand why she is so heartbroken, so you can't sympathize with her.

That being said, I admire her for putting so much of herself out there in a book, and her feelings and struggles ring true. She is very brave for describing such a personal journey to find a relationship with God. But the whole book probably could have been condensed into a long magazine article, and I can't believe her published paid for her trip and her book IN ADVANCE. Where do I sign up???

After all of her travels, it seems the only thing Liz learns is to love herself, and that's great. All in all, it's an okay book, but don't waste your money on it. Check it out of the library and keep your $15.

5 out of 5 stars A book that touches my heart!.......2007-10-18

I came across this book through the New York Times book review section in 2006. Being an avid traveler, I was immediately captured by its title. When the book arrived, I could not put it down until I finished reading in two days. I found myself laughing and crying all the way through Elizabeth Gilbert's world journey. I am a yogi who goes through the same struggles that Gilbert experienced in the ashram. I could see myself in her shoes. Gilbert is hilarious, emotional and sensitive. Her self-discovery is courageous and inspiring. My take home message with book is that, get out of your comfort zone, there are many unexpected surprises await you!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!.......2007-10-18

I simply could not put this book down. She writes beautifully, and this story is so wonderful. Kudos to Ms Gilbert.

Book Description

Chicago Stars quarterback Dean Robillard is the luckiest man in the world: a bona-fide sports superstar and the pride of the NFL with a profitable side career as a buff billboard model for End Zone underwear. But life in the glory lane has started to pale, and Dean has set off on a cross-country trip to figure out what's gone wrong. When he hits a lonely stretch of Colorado highway, he spies something that will shake up his gilded life in ways he can't imagine. A young woman . . . dressed in a beaver suit.

Blue Bailey is on a mission to murder her ex. Or at least inflict serious damage. As for the beaver suit she's wearing . . . Is it her fault that life keeps throwing her curveballs? Witness the expensive black sports car pulling up next to her on the highway and the Greek god stepping out of it.

Blue's career as a portrait painter is the perfect job for someone who refuses to stay in one place for very long. She needs a ride, and America's most famous football player has an imposing set of wheels. Now, all she has to do is keep him entertained, off guard, and fully clothed before he figures out exactly how desperate she is.

But Dean isn't the brainless jock she imagines, and Blue—despite her petite stature—is just about the toughest woman Dean has ever met. They're soon heading for his summer home where their already complicated lives and inconvenient attraction to each other will become entangled with a charismatic but aging rock star; a beautiful fifty-two-year-old woman trying to make peace with her rock and roll past; an eleven-year-old who desperately needs a family; and a bitter old woman who hates them all.

As the summer progresses, the wandering portrait artist and the charming football star play a high-stakes game, fighting themselves and each other for a chance to have it all.

Natural Born Charmer is for everyone who's ever thought about leaving their old life in the dust and never looking back. Susan Elizabeth Phillips takes us home again . . . and shows us where love truly lives.

5 out of 5 stars One of her best..........2007-08-31

I am a fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and this book did not disappoint! It was funny, and the characters were, as always, well-developed. This is one of her best books, in my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2007-08-14

I felt like I was reading Heaven, Texas, one of my fav by this author, all over again while reading this. Moreover, Heaven, Texas was a better novel then this book by far. And this is why I felt this book only deserved 3 stars by me.

There was no freshness to this story, it all seemed the same. So beware SEP fans, if you've read her other novels, you'll feel like you wasted your money if you bought the hard cover edition. However, if you've never read other works by this author, you'll enjoy this witty, love story.

5 out of 5 stars Natural Born Charmer.......2007-08-12

Another 10 stars!! If I could give it that rating I would. This is the last in the series *I think* about the "Chicago Stars" football team. I just discovered SEP's series about the fictional team late last year, and promptly devoured each one. They are all on my "keeper shelves"....This story is about Blue & Dean, and in my humble opinion...it was just the perfect story to end things. Blue grew up being shuffled around, due to her mother being a peace activist & her father dying before she was born. I can certainly identify w/that nomadic existence as I had somewhat of a "gypsy" childhood myself, growing up. As for Dean, he was the bastard child of a rockstar & a groupie. Not planned or wanted & basically denied a relationship to said "dad"...which made a definite impression on Dean. He grew up to be a fantastic QB for the "Chicago Stars"...and to see what his son grew up to become, humbles the now aging rock star. I even have some elements of this story in my own life...just not w/famous people. So I enjoyed this theme. Someone not being treated the way they should/yet overcoming/and becoming better for it...is such a great story to me. Underdog wins!! Only now the underdog is now on top!! I want to tell you...the potential next buyer/reader about every juicy, incredibly satisfying detail of this book. But at the same time I don't want to ruin the fun of you discovering these rich, amazing, totally genuine people. Sometimes the characters in SEP's books are so incredible, you feel like you know them. These two fractured people find each other, entertain us, and manage to fall in love at the same time. The cast of various supporting characters were great too. Riley was my mom's favorite! Did I mention she's falling in love w/all of SEP's books too? Please buy this book!! I promise you'll love it as much as I did!!

5 out of 5 stars One of her best.......2007-06-01

I love all her Chicago Stars books and think this is one of the funniest. The dialogue and interaction between Blue and Boo made me laugh out loud. I hated to finish it but will listen to this one on audio and recommend it to all my friends who are avid readers.
thanks susan - keep writing and i'll keep reading.

2 out of 5 stars Trying too hard to be hip.......2007-06-01

I generally enjoy this author, but I am getting tired of the Chicago Stars football team and their stories. If you have read "It Had to Be You" or "This Heart of Mine" you might as well skip this one. It is a retread of the same formula she has used before - with a few new innovations - this time Phillips sprinkles the f-word around pretty liberally. I don't really care to read that and it is not necessary to the story or to the character development. All I can think is that her editor told her she needed to do that to appeal to a younger audience. I have been reading her books for almost 20 years. Guess I'm done now.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as the Warprize.......2007-10-18

Who ever said this 2nd book in the series wasn't as good as the first has got to be kidding. I thoroughly enjoyed Warsworn - don't want to give away the story here but there is definite character growth, especially for Lara and her beloved Kier. Elizabeth Vaughan is a great story teller- she wraps you up in the her adventure stories that you just can't stop reading. I recommend this book as well as the last in the trilogy, Warlord. If you liked Warprize and want to know what happens after Lara decides to follow her Warlord, then buy Warsworn!

5 out of 5 stars Great Follow Up Book.......2007-10-17

I loved Elizabeth Vaughan's first book in this trilogy, "Warprize". Usually with trilogy's all three books are not of the same strength, but I ended up liking the follow up book "Warsworn" even more than the first. This writer simply has a talent for story telling that keeps you enthralled and glued to her books.

5 out of 5 stars Very Much Surprized!.......2007-10-09

I thought the first book was good. Well, this book was even better. I loved every bit of it. The ups and downs. It's a tear jerker. I sobbed like a baby at least twice.

Vaughan has created a wonderful fantasy romance novel/series. Her creativity of the two very diverse cultures (Xyians and Firelanders) are done excellently. She takes the reader on a journey that is intense, dramatic and very emotional. The main characters and secondary characters are all enjoyable. They all have different personalities that all kind of fit in place and enhance each other as well as the plot.

Great job Ms. Vaughan. I am so loving these books. Can't wait to start reading Warlord (the 3rd book).

4 out of 5 stars Moving Sequel to Warprize.......2007-09-27

Warsworn is the second book of the trilogy that began with Warprize. Starting a few days after the first book finished, it continues the story of Lara and Keir as they journey towards the Plains; where Lara will hopefully be confirmed as the Warprize. Unfortunately before they can get there, events take an unexpected turn and they are delayed near the town of Wellspring.

Warsworn is very much the middle book of a trilogy and I would definitely recommend you read Warprize first. If Warprize was a coming together, then Warsworn is where everything falls apart. Your enjoyment of the story will depend on your opinion of Lara's actions and attitude. Is she selfish or just mistaken in her beliefs? Would the situation have occurred anyway or did she precipitate it? Elizabeth Vaughn leaves the decisions up to the reader. Lara, herself, questions her actions, but given the person she is I think if she had the choice to make again she would have made the same decision. She remains true to her beliefs, though it's slightly annoying that she HAS to be right.

I admit I struggled on my first read of this book (the review was written after my second read through). The story is completely heartbreaking in parts - have tissues handy. This is one author who is not afraid to let her characters suffer. Thank goodness for Simus's letters which help lighten some of the darker moments.

The beauty of this story remains in the depth of the world building and the attention to detail of the Firelander/Plains culture. And also in the relationships between characters,(Marcus and Lara, Keir and Lara, Epor and Isdra etc.) who are so well written they seem real.

I don't think it quite manages the intensity of Warprize, but I liked it much more on a second reading, I felt I had a better understanding of the character's actions. I was much more aware of how the decisions each individual character takes would impact on everyone else - Lara's decision to heal, Isdra's / Keir's decision to ignore Lara. Definitely a book you can re-read, and I'm glad I have Warlord on hand so I don't have to wait for the story to continue.

4 out of 5 stars The Weak Link.......2007-09-18

Warprize is an amazing book that had me desperate for the sequel, Warsworn. Unfortunately, Warsworn fell slightly flat. Vaughan starts the book by letting Lara's pride get in the way, which causes her to lie to Kier and get her friends infected by the plague and killed. Then she spends the rest of the book feeling sorry for herself that she did get her friends killed. Lara is supposed to be a Master Healer but gives up on trying to find a cure once the obvious ones don't work. On top of that, the plague kills off a couple of the secondary characters, one who I thought was killed unnecessarily.

Despite my complaints, I do really like the characters in this book. I may not like Lara as much as I did in Warprize but she is still an engaging character. Keir is a wonderful character and continues to be so in this book. He loves Lara deeply and tries to be understanding of their different upbringings. The secondary characters all add tremendously to the story and wished some of the secondary characters from Warprize played a larger part in this book.

The romance between Keir and Lara, which I was excited to see develop more from the first book, took an unfortunate backseat to the plot. The romantic moments that are in the book are wonderful, but they seemed far and few between.

I did really like this book, but that may be because I am holding hope out that this series will pull back up with the final book, Warlord. If you have read Warprize, I definitely suggest reading this book, despite my complaints.

5 out of 5 stars life transforming.......2007-09-14

This is a life transforming book if you apply it ;-). Really helped me to see how to deal with depression and how important setting your mind on things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, whatever has excellence whatever is worthy of praise---these are the filters for our minds.

4 out of 5 stars Loving Him is the Focus.......2007-07-12

This is a timely book dealing with the battle we all face in our minds of where our focus is, what the truth is, and dealing with reality as it really is, both earthly and heavenly. It is refreshingly practical and guides the reader to take a good look at the truth of the past, present, and future. Having just completed a women's Bible class using this book, the only criticism is that there was too much looking at us, not enough at God. We do need to recognize the reality of our own lives, especially to be able to find freedom, but if we are to love Him with all our minds and see the beauty of walking each day with Him, I found the focus not to be quite as consistently upward as most of her other books.

5 out of 5 stars Learn To Love God.......2006-04-13

I love this book! Elizabeth George does a great job of teaching how to love God. Here's a quote from the book: "We need to sail on as we look ahead and reach forward toward spiritual maturity and the goal of loving God with all our mind. As we focus on God, He will guide our steps, empower our service to Him, and work in us the characteristics of Christ as He enables us to both meet the demands of the present and press on toward the prize. This is a great book and it has study questions in the back for each chapter.

5 out of 5 stars This book was great!.......2006-03-31

I found this book to be very, very helpful in dealing not only with depression but panic/anxiety disorder. It offers up some very useful advice. I found the first half of the book more useful, but enjoyed the entire thing.

5 out of 5 stars Suggested study........2005-09-12

If you are suffering from depression this is a wonderful study to redirect your thoughts to what "is true." Elizabeth George does a wonderful job having you take a closer look at God's Word. I found I am trusting my Lord Jesus more instead of my thoughts or what I perceive is true. Making the choice to believe the Word of God.

4 out of 5 stars Must-read for every fan of "Stepping Heavenward"!.......2007-10-13

After reading this biography of Elizabeth Prentiss, I love her book "Stepping Heavenward" even more. Her life is an incredible story of submitting to God's soverignty in all of life, no matter what tragedies and hardships come. I laughed, I cried... it moved me, Bob.

Honestly, I don't think the book was incredibly well-written, in some aspects, but it still communicates an amazing story and I would recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Christian women.......2007-08-27

I first read Elizabeth Prentiss' most famous work, Stepping Heavenward, about 10 years ago during the fall semester of my junior year of college. The main character, Katy, exemplifies a woman of noble character who cares for her family, loves Jesus, and is passionate in her pursuit to be more holy. Not only did this book completely change the way I view womanhood, it has become one of my favorite books over the years as I have married and entered motherhood. Quite eager to learn more about Mrs. Prentiss and the circumstances life afforded her to write such a moving story, I ordered Sharon James' Elizabeth Prentiss `More Love to Thee' without a moment's hesitation. Using Elizabeth's personal letters and other writings, James develops a faithful, detailed picture of Elizabeth Prentiss' life and faith.

Sharon James begins Elizabeth's story at the most logical place: her birth. Born October 26, 1818 in Portland, Maine, Elizabeth was a much desired and cherished daughter of Pastor Edward Payson and his wife Louisa. Through the writings of friends and family members, James paints an endearing picture of `Lizzy,' as those closest to her were fond of calling her. James details many interesting facets of Elizabeth, her five siblings, and their happy, Christian home. But Elizabeth's life drastically changed with the long illness and subsequent death of her father just days before her ninth birthday. Even in just nine years, her father made a profound impact on Elizabeth's life. From Life of the Rev. Edward Payson, D.D., Edward Payson writes, "O what a blessed thing it is to lose one's will." This attitude coming from his heart no doubt greatly influenced Elizabeth in the way she sought to live her life joyfully surrendered to God, and further finds a place in Katy's life in Stepping Heavenward.

At the age of twelve, Elizabeth and her family moved to New York for a very short time. It is during their time in New York that Elizabeth professes her faith in Christ and joins Bleecker Street Presbyterian Church. Here, James sheds light on another very interesting aspect of Elizabeth's personality. "She did nothing by halves." James treats her readers to insights into Elizabeth's closest friendships, favorite authors and books, leisure and entertainments, interesting visitors to her mother's boarding house, those who influenced her growth in faith, and her passion for Jesus and teaching others about Him.

From 1840 to 1843, Elizabeth accepted a teaching position at a girls' school in Richmond, Virginia. Far from home, Elizabeth wrote and received many letters during these years, which James shares. Included in this portion of the biography are Elizabeth's thoughts on the best ways to educate young people, on the importance of loving one's students, even the (seemingly) worst ones, and on her own path to living a more holy, dedicated life. Of the latter, James lets us in on some new teaching, called `Christian perfection', Elizabeth learned from her sister, Louisa. At this point, James begins to unfold Elizabeth's struggle to discern true doctrine from false, an important element of her life that James revisits throughout the book as Elizabeth reads more about `Christian perfection' and the writings of Madam Guyon.

James explains that Elizabeth had a determined mind regarding the kind of man she would be willing to marry, and she would not budge. Set on a man with a passion for Christ that could match her own and a keen intellect, "On 11 September 1843, Elizabeth accepted a proposal of marriage from George Prentiss," writes James. This portion of the book, Elizabeth's courtship and marriage to Mr. Prentiss, is one of the most enjoyable and instructive. "Apart from anything else, she was clear-sighted enough to see that a wife needed `oceans of self-sacrificing love' and only a union with a real `soul mate' would make that sacrifice worthwhile" (p. 41). From this point to the end of Elizabeth's life, James details married life, motherhood, and everything that goes with them. James guides the reader through Elizabeth's life through letters and journals to reveal her very passionate and pure love for Mr. Prentiss (a rare sight these days), her love for her children, her intense grief over the deaths of two infants, her struggles with her health, her desire to comfort those who mourned, her love for her church family, and her fervent desire to be with her Savior. In all of these things, James shows the preeminent place Christ held in Elizabeth's heart. James writes, "Elizabeth firmly believed that a Christian could know `peace' whatever the circumstances through submitting to the will of God" (p.165). It is this conviction, and faith that said, "God never makes mistakes," that helped Elizabeth through the hardest trials of her life.

A prolific writer, Elizabeth found time to write around the needs of her family. James brings all of Elizabeth's experiences (from rubbing elbows with the great theologians of her day to European travel to the Civil War) together to illustrate what she believes most likely influenced each of Elizabeth's books and her most famous hymn, "More Love to Thee." In the conclusion, James compiles Elizabeth's personal writings to illustrate what Elizabeth thought of herself as a Christian, a wife and mother, and her thoughts on the `cult of true womanhood'. Finally, James offers her opinion of whether or not Elizabeth Prentiss contributed to the feminization of American culture and the "move to a more sentimental approach to religion" through her writings (p. 215). The "Suggestions for Further Reading" lists Elizabeth's books that are currently in print and where to find them.

Sharon James has written a widely accessible, enlightening, and inspiring biography of Elizabeth Prentiss. Young Christian women today are in desperate need of solid, God-glorifying older women to watch and imitate. Though Elizabeth has been living with Jesus for the last 129 years, Sharon James has put her into our hands. I am eager and joyful to recommend this book to all women!

5 out of 5 stars Elizabeth Prentiss: More Love to Thee.......2007-06-25

I first heard of Elizabeth Prentiss a few years ago when her novel, Stepping Heavenward, was recommended to me. Since that first reading, I have re-read it many times. But, until recently, I did not know much about the author. But, because I enjoyed her writing, I was excited to learn more about her. I originally ordered this book as part of the GirlTalk Blog Book Club, but on the day it arrived, I peeked at the first chapter just to see what I was in for. Instead of reading along wit the group, I ended up starting, and finishing, it within 2 days of it's arrival!

I love reading biographies - especially biographies of men and women who spent a lifetime pursuing the Lord. I love getting a little peek into their world. My husband observed that reading a biography requires that you invest yourself in someone else's life. While I never really thought about it that way before, I think he is absolutely right. When you read the story of someone's life, you get to know them in a real and intimate way. As the book opens, Sharon James observes that, "All her life she was petite, observant, softly spoken in company, reserved and yet deeply affectionate. And, throughout her life, she quickly won the love of those who met her." (pg. 1)

You cannot help but love Elizabeth Prentiss after meeting her in this book. Not because she was a perfect, saint-like individual, but because she was real. One childhood friend noted that one of Elizabeth's most endearing qualities was "...an entire absence of all attempt to show her best side, or put the best face on anything that concerned her. An ingenuous frankness about herself and her affairs - even about her little weaknesses - was one of her most striking traits." (pg. 5) She had struggles, quirks, and flaws. But, she also had a sense of humor, a love of life, and an intense passion for the things of the Lord.

As I read through the letters, and excerpts of journal entries throughout the book, she refuses to put a good spin on her own sinful, selfish heart. She writes about her frustrations with herself honestly. Shortly after her engagement to George Prentiss, she wrote a letter to her cousin expressing a fear that her love for God would grow cold as she grew in love for her fiancé/husband. And, after she and George were married,
"we see her determination that in becoming a wife, she should not simply fulfill the role of a `cook and manager'. She wanted to organize a happy home, as well as keeping up her reading, so that she could provide intelligent and spiritual companionship to her husband." (pg. 57)

Like many women of her generation, becoming a wife and mother was Elizabeth's expected future. But, so often, the joys of motherhood were overshadowed by the death of their young children. For many, the breakdown of their own health was a consequence that they must also pay. Elizabeth was no exception. She loved children, and was excited to be a mother, but experienced the deep pain of losing 2 of her children within the span of 3 months. But, during this difficult time, she clung to the truth that, "God never makes a mistake." (pg. 75) Her book, Stepping Heavenward, gave her a vehicle for sharing this comforting truth with other women who were also grieving similar losses.

Though Elizabeth had a strong desire to honor the Lord in all she did, she was occasionally influenced by incorrect theological ideas, the trends of her day. She was impacted by the writings of a French mystic, who advocated introspection. She toyed with the ideas presented by the "perfectionists" on several occasions, though she eventually rejected their teachings. Her novels, often a reflection of events in her own life, though filled with biblical principles about parenting, marriage, courtship, and life in general, sometimes also advocated culturally acceptable roles, rather than exhorting women to fulfill their roles as ordained by God in Scripture.

Although this is the story of a woman who lived in the 1800's, many of the struggles, temptations, and difficulties that Elizabeth faced transcend generational lines. Throughout her life, we see Elizabeth's unwavering confidence in God, her sincere love for Christ, her passionate pursuit of her own personal holiness, her devotion to her family, and her desire to serve and minister to those around her. And, those qualities are just as relevant to women today.

In the Foreword to this book, Barbara Hughes warns, "If you would rather avoid a painfully sanctifying comparison of your own faith with that of this woman, perhaps you should stop reading now." (pg. xi) But, as Proverbs 13:20 observes "Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm." (ESV)

If you truly desire to "walk with the wise" in your daily life, even if it requires a little "painful sanctification," I would highly recommend that you start with the life of this woman.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-03-21

I really enjoyed Elizabeth Prentiss's book "Stepping Heavenward" so I decided to learn more about her. The book "Elizabeth Prentiss: More Love to The" has been very inspiring and provoking. Elizabeth Prentiss has been such an example of someone who is living her life through mundane activities, as well as through suffering, but she was also striving to continue to grow everyday in godly character.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT book! .......2007-02-08

I also loved this book. Not only did the book challenge my faith it was also an enjoyable read. I would highly recommend this to anyone - but especially a married woman wanting to learn more about living a Godly life in the midst of various challenges (raising children, illness, etc).

5 out of 5 stars God's Plan.......2007-01-28

For a godly woman, the "ideas" in this book will not come as a shock or a way "to keep women in their place." It's God's plan that the husband should be the leader and the wife should be the follower. God has simply given us different roles through His word. It's not a big deal for those who hold God's will at the forefront of their lives. Ephesians 5: 22-24 reads "Wives submit to your own husbands , as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as also Christ is ahead of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything." Then in Ephesians 5: 25, 28-29 reads "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for it....So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church." For this Paul has been at times labeled a "woman-hater." However this is God's word as we see in I Timothy 3: 16-17 that "All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." That is God's plan for the marriage, and God's plan does not change with the times. It's absolutely imperative to understand what the Bible teaches not only on this subject, but in all things. Study God's word to know what the will of the Lord is, and please "enter by the narrow gate." Obedience to His word is key. How is your heart?

4 out of 5 stars Checks and balances.......2006-12-06

The outline of the book is outstanding. It's a shame some people may misread and misinterpret much of what George is relating from her own life experiences. She could have spent more time and space reflecting on the Biblical guidelines for a happy marriage, as well as examples or illustrations from other people rather than herself. The whole issue of submission should not overshadow the role of the wife to provide a check and balance for success and happiness in a marriage.

5 out of 5 stars Right On Track.......2006-08-16

I feel the need to defend this book a little bit, as it has been pretty well slammed by some other readers. Elizabeth George has a God-given talent for telling it like it is. The reason why several readers have negative feedback for this book, is that she tells the truth about what Scripture actually says. Wives ARE to submit to their husbands and be obedient them. Husbands are put in authority over their wives. In turn, the husband is to love the wife as Christ loves the Church. Of course husbands are not perfect and have their own flaws. A wife is supposed to be his help-meet, though and offer her own counsel in daily situations. It is not the wife's place to be the spiritual leader of the home, nor should the responsibility of providing for the household fall on her shoulders. Her congregation is her children and her pulpit the kitchen table. She should focus her preaching to the children, not her husband. All the time spent controlling him would be much better spent in prayer. I don't understand why so many women want to be so free of authority in their lives. If you have a problem with obeying your husband, than it's possible that your real beef is with God, since that is the way He designed it all to begin with. Read this book. It will help you get back to the basics of what being a wife is all about.

1 out of 5 stars Find a better book.......2006-07-05

I had heard good things about George, so I though I'd give her book a try, but I could barely make it past the third chapter. I felt like I was reading the Complete Idiot's Guide to an Unrealistic, Cheesy Marriage. I found her tone condescending as I, the reader, was first called her "precious reading friend" and then was accused of having a "sometimes empty brain." And to give my husband a really fabulous day, she suggested I not talk at all the whole day...yes, she really said that. No thanks. There are a lot of other choices out there for books on biblical marriage. I think I'll keep on shopping.

2 out of 5 stars Beware of bad advice.......2006-02-26

Although I am a very modern-thinking woman, I looked into Elizabeth George's work with an open mind, hoping to find insight behind the smiling face in the picture I'd seen so often. I was not only disappointed, but even offended by some of the advice she gave to wives. I believe very strongly that a wife should love, respect, and support her husband; I don't think anyone will disagree there. However, as far as I'm concerned, obedience has no place in a marriage on either side. Marriage should be a democracy, not a monarchy and certainly not a dictatorship.

George seems to believe that a wife's only place is consistently behind her husband, whatever he says. She even said that in order for marriage to be teamwork, the husband must be leader and the wife must be follower. That's not teamwork; that's the role of a sheep and a shepherd. Certainly God wants us to respect our husbands and value their opinions, but the idea of obeying a man and assuming he always knows what's best simply because he IS a man is incorrect. Men are human too, and no matter how great our hubbies are, we all know they're not always right. George has now long given me the impression of someone so caught up in her own bubble that she's forgotten how some things work in the outer world. If she wants to live in particularly heavy submission, that's her choice. What offends me is that she not only assumes that all women should live this way, but that God wants them to live this way.

George is a genuinely sweet woman, but her advice to be utterly submissive could be harmful for some and her sweet nature is partly what keeps people from realizing this. One woman assures us this book will change marriages, but if the change is that the wife obeys the husband 24/7, it's not a good one. There is NO place in the Bible were God says that wives should obey their husbands and submission is clearly meant to be mutual. If one-sided submission works for some couples, fine, but that's not the only way to have a Godly marriage.

As usual, there have been accusations that I and others have a problem with George because she tells the truth about Scripture; nope, not at all. God did not intend for men to control women; that extremely human idea came about only after the Fall when men began to ignore God and make their own rules. I have no problem with God's Word, only with people who twist it (I don't think George has twisted it, just exaggerated it) Making wives obedient followers will not fix the divorce rate in this country.

George is a good writer and many of her other books and works are encouraging to women. However, I obviously don't recommend this book, at least not for women who prefer to have a say in their households, but if you prefer to have your husband be in charge or just want advice on how to be loving, you may very well like it. All I ask is that you take it for what it is: a guidebook, not the Gospel. Obey God's Word; take or leave Elizabeth George's.

Book Description

The Exploits & Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy takes readers back into the imagined family of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Their musical daughter Alethea makes a disastrous marriage to a man whose charming manners conceal an unpleasant nature. Flinging caution to the winds, she flees her marital home, masquerading as a gentleman, and accompanied only by her redoubtable maid, Figgins, she sets off for Venice to take refuge with her sister Camilla. But events -- always dramatic and sometimes dangerous -- conspire to thwart her plans. Before she can meet up with Camilla, chance and her love of music lead her into the world of Italian opera, while her encounter with the aloof and difficult Titus Manningtree, in Italy to pursue a lost Titian painting, is to change her life -- although fate has several more tricks to play before she can find happiness.

With wit, aplomb, and delectable style, Elizabeth Aston once again re-creates the world of Jane Austen, populating her novel with captivating characters firmly rooted in Austen's traditions but distinctly her own, resulting in another delightful comedy of manners, morals, and marriage.

Delightful to read the different developments of the Darcy characters...well written, very interesting plot and a happy ending....

4 out of 5 stars enjoyable, entertaining and romantic...................2006-10-27

This is the story of the young daughter of the Darcy's, Alethea. After rushing into a marriage she finds that her husband is not the man he portrayed himself to be and custom dictates that she remain his wife. Finding this to be an intolerable state in which to remain, she concocts a plan to escape to one of her sisters, hoping that things can be resolved. She and her maid disguise themselves as men and what follows is an exciting escape to Venice, filled with danger, entanglements and an opportunity of a lifetime............if only the disguises can hold up.
The story is enjoyable, the characters entertaining and the romantic possibilities are intriguing. While this tale is a spin-off of Jane Austen's characters, Elizabeth Bennet and the enticing Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth Aston crafts a whole new tale of romance and adventure that is fully capable of dancing off into the sunset on it's own accord. This is a pure delight to read.

4 out of 5 stars Good stand alone novel.......2006-06-20

Elizabeth Aston's first novel, Mr. Darcy's Daughters was a little disappointing, being an inferior copy of Pride and Predjudice. However, I really enjoyed this new novel. Aston breaks off from trying to copy Jane Austen and explores themes that are more mature and relevant today with Althea's abusive husband. This is NOT another Jane Austen copy, which may be disappointing if that's what you are looking for, but I think it's much better.

2 out of 5 stars A little better than Mr. Darcy's Daughters (2 1/2 stars)..........2006-06-19

I bought Elizabeth Aston's Mr. Darcy's Daughters and The Exploits and Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy at an used bookstore at the same time and so I had no choice but to give them a whirl. I didn't like Mr. Darcy's Daughters so I had no big expectations with this one. I don't know if my not expecting much had actually made this book a little more enjoyable than its predecessor, but it was. This one picks up where the fist installment left off. Alethea Darcy, the Darcys' youngest daughter is miserable. Her unhappy marriage to the controlling Mr. Norris Napier, whom she married after the love of her life marries someone else and leaves on the verge of ruin, has left her no choice but to run as far away from him as possible. Alethea and her personal maid dress up as men in order to avoid being recognized as they travel to Italy. She wants to be with her sister Camilla, the one person she has always confided in. But on her way to Venice, she encounters several obstacles, one in particular in the form of Mr. Titus Manningtree. Titus cannot believe the woman's boldness and improper behavior, but he is also smitten by her wit and spirit. Feelings ensue between these two characters, but will Alethea ever be free from her husband? There are some twists throughout the novel.

Elizabeth Aston is no Jane Austen. I have known that since reading the first installment of this series. As said earlier, I was unimpressed with the first novel and thought that the five daughters were almost exact replicas of the Bennett sisters. And the whole thing centered on improper behavior and ruined reputations appalled me because Jane Austen would have never written something like that. Having said that, The Exploits and Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy was more enjoyable because Aston created some rather compelling situations this time that didn't sound like a bad copy of a Jane Austen novel. It is also a relief that most Pride and Prejudice characters don't appear much here (and the appearances and mentions of P&P characters include Mr. Collins, who is as annoying as ever). Alethea Darcy is an interesting heroine. Out of the five women Aston created in the first book, she is the most interesting and I'm glad that the author decided to do a spinoff with her. Titus is also compelling. However, the reason for his European trip (to try to find his father's Titian painting) is just a contrived plot device to put these two characters together. The fact that the painting isn't mentioned again proves this theory. As for the novel in general, I suppose that the main reason why I liked this one a little more was because I was able to suspend the fact that these characters are based on the beloved Pride and Prejudice. I read this as a standalone novel and not as part of a sequel of the aforementioned classic. I had to do it so that I wouldn't throw the book against the wall. There are, after all, things here that Austen would never have written about. And there were still things that puzzled me. The historical accuracy here is questionable. Some things just don't ring true for that era. Homosexuality and sexual things in general are discussed a little too openly. That was unheard of in Regency England. There were other things that annoyed me because I wasn't sure if they were true to the period or not and they pulled me out of the story again and again. All in all, The Exploits and Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy is a better read than Mr. Darcy's Daughters. However, it is nevertheless far from being perfect, which is why I give it two and a half stars.

1 out of 5 stars Letdown.......2006-06-19

Having enjoyed "Mr. Darcy's Daughters" written by Elizabeth Ashton it was with great anticipation that I began this book. I ended the book with great letdown. While I will not dispute that "flagellants and sodomites" existed during this era, I know it as something that Jane Austin did not dwell on in her writings. I wish that Ms. Ashton had "kept a good thing going" and continued on more in the keeping of her first book and those of Jane Austin.

Comedian, actor, and director Billy Crystal's ode to his first grandchild will strike a chord with every expectant grandparent (and parents, too). Readers will feel the sweet anticipation building as Grandpa Crystal dreams about the baby's upcoming birth. While the writing is at times awkward, the sentiment behind the text is genuine and universal, " I want to feel your heart beat as you lie upon my chest, bait your hook, fly your kite, help you study for a test." The narrator envisions peekaboo, horsey, and visits to the beach with a red-haired tot--his love virtually bubbles over. Pastel illustrations (reminiscent of the dreamy, soft-focus drawings in pregnancy books) by Elizabeth Sayles show the rugged, gray-haired gramps beaming as he partakes of the imagined pleasures to come. Crystal concludes with another awkward yet heartfelt verse:
Your mom is my daughter, and your dad is his mom's son. You lived within your mommy, but now the time has come. Get ready, sweet little one-- Your life will be just great. I'm going to be your grandpa, and… I can hardly wait.
(All Ages) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Based on the author's own experience, I Already Know I Love You describes the cavalcade of feelings that comes with being a grandfather for the very first time. Beginning with anticipating the new baby's arrival, this book celebrates all the moments, great and small, that a new grandpa is ready to share. Whether it's taking a nap together or rooting for the Yankees, this grandpa just can't wait. Lush and dreamy pastels complement the heartfelt text, and together they celebrate all the joy a brand-new baby brings to the world.

Billy Crystal touches the hearts of all grandparents-to-be, both male and female alike. I also gave it as a gift to my brother who was becoming a first-time grandpa. It is very special to read the book to your grandchild and to let them know how very loved they were before they were born and after too. It says it all!

This is my 5 year olds favorite. This was not even a gift from her grandpa, but we picked it up because it looked so sweet. This is the book she used to ask for every night, and from listening as we read along, this is also her first book that she can read by herself. The page with the 'spaghetti kiss' is her very favorite. We picked a four leaf clover the other day, and she ran in to press it in her favorite book. Thank you Billy Crystal - we're looking forward to reading your next!

5 out of 5 stars The real thing.......2007-05-04

For the benefit of anyone wondering if this is a schlocky historical romance tarted up as a piece of serious fiction: fear not. I haven't seen Maeve Chronicles II yet, but I picked up *The Beginning* (previously published under a different title) to thumb through it and read 20 pages standing in the bookstore. I read around all through it, and I hated to put it down. I can't wait for my own copies of both books to read.

The premise -- that Jesus and Mary Magdalene met as youths at a Druid school in Britain, and Mary was a Bradleyesque Celt -- is ridiculous and wonderfully credible. Cunningham's intelligence and wit pull it off. Imagine Evangeline Walton without inhibitions.

She has researched the Celts just fine, and her bawdy, literate narrator heroine will have you smiling after a single paragraph. I think I'm in love. A sexy chick who can toss a caber. Mercy.

Read it as a brilliant addition to the F&SF genre or with New Age enthusiasm; you will enjoy it. I'm looking forward to every page, and to the unpublished third volume.

In an imaginative blend of ancient Celtic Paganism, Christianity, and modern secularism, Elizabeth Cunningham delivers the prequel to The Passion of Mary Magdalen in Magdalen Rising: The Beginning. Maeve Rhuad describes her childhood, being a daughter of the divine raised by eight warrior-witch mothers. An enchanted adolescence brings fourteen-year-old Maeve to meet her cosmic twin, Esus, at college.

The story is told from Maeve's point-of-view, with the awareness that she is speaking to a twenty-first century reader. She relates events that may seem strange to the reader by comparing them to their modern equivalents. This contrast caught me off guard at first, but as the story progressed, I began to appreciate the added dimension. The book is divided into five parts, each representing a phase in Maeve's life.

Maeve is a fiery red head who has been raised and initiated into the world of the sacred feminine, found herself a namesake for legendary warrior Queen Maeve of Connacht, and has earned her entry into a druid college as part of an experimental coed admissions policy. She is also no stranger to sarcasm, and her tongue-in-cheek commentary throughout the novel adds a comic spin to a somber story that, at times, is wrought with tragedy. Her headstrong challenges to Esus's school of thought will make the reader either laugh out loud or sigh in resigned agreement.

The novel is a challenge to conventional thought that offers some fascinating alternatives to popular legends. Maeve is a heroine for today's reader, and the general reverence for the sacred feminine is a refreshing quality. I began this series with the prequel, but I fully intend to get my hands on the first and forthcoming releases. Fans of Juliette Marillier's fantasy will undoubtedly become loyal fans of Elizabeth Cunningham, as well.

3 out of 5 stars The Road to Notoriety.......2007-04-25

Everyone loves a grand storyteller! For some unexplainable reason, some have the gift and some don't. But one thing is always clear - lovers of story instantly recognize a true storyteller, a bard to be sure who can grip the attention and imagination of the listener and hold it far beyond the end of the tale!

Magdalen Rising is an enigma for sure! As the prequel to The Passion of Mary Magdalene, it introduces the reader to the childhood and teenage training of Maeve. Born to warrior witches of Tir na mBan and the god of the sea, Manannan Mac Lir (or so we are led to think for a very long time), Maeve grows with confidence, indeed one may even think precociousness, and grace into the mysteries of nature and the myths of her Celtic beloved people. The visions, extraordinary experiences, and spiritual rites she experiences are totally fascinating, spiked in between her racy, bold, and indomitable spirit!

Nothing prepares her for the actual meeting and interaction she will undergo with her beloved, Esus the Stranger (later known as yes, Jesus), and the opposition and attacks she will face from the authoritarian Druids.

Each story within this novel is connected and rivets the reader, uniting in a deeper understanding of Celtic culture and mythology. Yet the story actually has very little substance beyond this Celtic connection. We never get to know Esus very well and Maeve seems to be a stranger even to her own people, coming from a land whose female inhabitants are believed to be witches. The mystical quality of Druids is somewhat lost and even embattled in this account of the land where Maeve travels to be schooled.

Elizabeth Cunningham is a grand storyteller who fascinates and haunts the reader, creating a legend about Esus and Maeve that obviously carries into later Judaism and Christianity. But it does little more, leaving the reader feeling a bit cheated, especially after the stunning predecessor to this novel!

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing, to say the least.......2007-04-06

First Century CE and the child of eight mothers, Maeve is on her way to the Druidic school to study as a bard. There she meets her stepbrother, as she calls him, Esus of Jerusalem, who is also studying there to be an ovate. This is the first year the Druids have taken seven women into their school to study with the males. Maeve, raised with visions and goddess mothers, has a transcendent healing power. When someone is in pain or dying she can relieve their pain, and even bring them back to life, by laying her fiery hands on them.

Some, especially the Jew Esus, thinks she could be a witch, but the powers she has are hers alone and are fashioned after the Druidic arts. Esus and Maeve are very different; he was raised in a crowded world where he "was accustomed to throwing his weight around." Maeve was the adorable, spoiled child being raised on Tir na mBan, who grew up in a world of women and stories. Storytelling is considered an art. The Druids don't write down their stories because keeping memories and shared stories alive creates unity between tribes.

Saying "Tir na mBan" to the Druid's makes them fall into a spell, almost as if this is a mythical place. Maeve's father is the God of the Sea and in her mind Esus and her are both divine. She wants desperately to connect to Esus and she thinks when he shuns her, "So we are different, as different as day and night. But listen, don't day and night meet again and again, one turning into the other? Isn't that how the world is made and made new?"

Magdelan Rising is an intriguing book, combining current pop culture and ancient rituals. This book is a stunning portrayal of a young, naive Esus, who is known to us as Jesus, and Maeve, a gorgeous Celtic goddess who eventually becomes Mary Magdalen.

Excellent book, highly recommended for its levity, wit and knowledge of the first century CE and Druidic culture, along with a glimpse of a confused teenage Jesus.

Armchair Interviews says: This is a phenomenal historical perspective of life in the time of Esus and his foil, Maeve.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING!.......2007-03-15

If there is one thing I cannot stand, it is being suckered into buying a book twice because it has been re-issued under another title. This book is a fun read and I'm really enjoying this series, but don't buy "Magdalen Rising" if you already own "Daughter of the Shining Isle". It's the same book.

1 out of 5 stars A real bore.......2007-09-30

Reading about this book in a Self Magazine article, I decided to read it for myself.I nearly didn't finish the book. By the second chapter I nearly put the book down as the characters were so repulsive to me. Still I forced myself to read on. Halfway through the book I finally had to just skim through the rest of it so that I could get to the end. Too long, too convoluted with rather crude characters and no where near enough romance or even sex for that matter. The sex that happens is some of the most mediocre I've ever read. The book almost redeems itself in the last couple of chapters by actually getting a little bit interesting but you shouldn't have to wait until the end of a book to finally get interested. Just overall a very trying book that I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars A Dark, Poignant Book.......2007-08-26

From the blurb on the back cover of my paperback edition, I expected a comedy. This is not a comedy. It has a few humorous moments but overall it is about growing up: Chronologically and emotionally. Enough other reveiwers have given a synopsis of the plot so I won't bother except to say that the back stories are very necessary. This is a long book but well paced so it went by quickly for me. As for all of those cracks about the 80's clothes, remember this was written in the 80's. I can't give it 5 stars because that is reserved for her best works and this doesn't quite meet the level of writing that she displayed in "Heaven, Texas".

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-08-14

I loved all the books in the Chicago Stars/Bonner family series so I thought I would feel the same about this one. While a bit drawn out, I did like Francesca's transformation from spoiled brat to a woman supporting her child on her own. I had a particular fondness for parts of this book that took place in Lake Charles because it's near where I was born and where my own parents grew up.

3 out of 5 stars Almost didn't finish.......2007-07-11

The story starts out too slow and takes up too much of a time frame. (10 years) It is dated and I had to use my imaginiation to picture different clothing than described. Though all in all I liked the story and the ending it took too long to get there and I thought about not finishing it several times. Not her best book.

2 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment..........2007-07-11

After having read 'This Heart of Mine' by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, I decided to read Fancy Pants next. I was disappointed. The book is very dated in the 80's. I lived through shoulder pads as fashion once already! The characters are rather easy to dislike. By the end I could have cared less if they got together or fell off a cliff. If you are trying to decide on buying a book, choose something else of Susan Elizabeth Phillips.
