5 out of 5 stars Fantastic primer and reference........2006-12-20

I still pull this book off the shelf every year to refresh. In fact, I'm on my second copy after wearing out the first. I highly recommend this book for high school and college graduates starting out. Most of us don't start with a lot of money to invest in clothing. I started out similarly to the book's suggestions. I've advanced considerably since then and this has been a great guide in growing my wardrobe without waste. That isn't to say I haven't purchased some items that I fell in love with along the way. This book covers that too.

As a traveling professional I have always found the travel advice for packing only what is necessary a wonderful section. The photographs are wonderfully informative. There are a few outdated memes such as in the regional dress section - a knowledge worker wearing boots with anything other than jeans in Denver is tacky.

Suits are important. I'm one of many that can attribute a successful interview partially to the suit. A team of very tired interviewers would only show up to my interview after they were sure I wasn't dressed in "typical Colorado attire." I wore a suit, my shoes were shined, and I looked professional. Good looking clothes matter.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this if you're young!.......2006-11-27

At first glance this seems simple and basic, and because of that you may pass it by. Yet that is exactly why this book (and the others in it's series) are worth the buy.

You'll learn how to blend in, how to fit in, how to step in -- and step up (the corporate ladder). If you're a young man who wears clunky black shoes with a suit and thinks that's OK because they are "in style" - read this book. If you're a man that thinks suit's aren't necessary because you're job allows "techie casual" -- read this book!!

It will help you acheive the next level in your career...

3 out of 5 stars The best book on the market for how to dress in 2006........2006-08-31

The book is probably the best book on the market for how to dress in 2006. I purchased this book to compete with the younger business crowd in interviews. I find it exceptional on style representation of how men dress. It does not emphasis the uniform of an office. It lacks empahsis on the male tendancey to expect everyone to show involvement by dressing alike. I call this the socially conditioning of men to follow a uniform dress code. I suspect this comes from all the socializing in sports acitivites. It is both a signals of member of your team and the oposing team. How you dress in work especially corporate America has major implications on how you are viewed in your work place. I suggest adjusting your style to each circumstance: work, play, social life to give the best impression

4 out of 5 stars Gives A Good Framework.......2006-08-24

I liked this book because it gave a good strategy for identifying what elements you already own, prior to buying new clothes.

2 out of 5 stars Very basic advice.......2005-10-06

If you know nothing about dressing yourself, this book is targeted at you. There's some good advice here, but some questionable advice as well, and some of the advice is already dated -- the monochrome tie/shirt combo went out with Regis' millionaire show. A much better book is Flusser's "Dressing the Man." And if you want a really good book on elegant living, try Bernhard Roetzel's "Gentleman's Guide to Grooming and Style."

    Book Description

At the heart of The Three Lands, there is a paradise, filled with beauty and wonders of all kinds. A lush and vibrant place, it stands in sharp contrast to the baseness and squalor of the world outside the walls of Osrakum.

But this beauty comes at a cost. The Masters who rule the world are driven by sadistic dreams and mythic charms. They use their vast powers to leech the resources of the world unto themselves, to create an artificial haven where they play out twisted games of power amid a decadent splendor. Within the inner circle of power lies a glittering court where the royal houses plot vile atrocities, and madness and bestiality hold sway. The Masters are nothing less than gods in this realm and their plans (or whims) can bring either perfect pleasure... or death.

Young Carnelian has spent his entire life in exile with his father, a nobleman who rejected the evil ways of his people and fled to the ends of the known world. But forces conspired to change all that, and Carnelian returned to his homeland. He is a sheep among wolves, and it has taken every ounce of his strength to resist the temptations of power that threaten to seduce his very soul.

What Carnelian could never have imagined was that he would fall in love with none other than Osidian, one of the twin Gods, ruler of his world--or that forces far darker than he thought possible would use him as a weapon. When the young lovers are kidnapped by the Empress Ykoriana and forced from the safety of the empire, it appears that their lives are forfeit. But Carnelian and Osidian fall into the hands of barbarians from the southern plain they call the Undersky. These raiders manage to elude the legions of the Masters, and after enduring terrible hardships, they succeed in bringing their prizes home to their tribe.

Carnelian comes to realize that the world is much more bizarre than he could ever imagine, that love can sometimes blind you to things that may destroy you, that the simple things the heart can teach you will prove to be the most true....

And that he holds in his hands the potential to save or doom all of his world.

The Standing Dead is the powerful sequel to Ricardo Pinto's first novel The Chosen, and it continues this unique fantasy series about power, eros, and madness...and the depths a man will go to for love. It is the second volume in The Stone Dance of the Chameleon series, and he is currently at work on the third. Ricardo Pinto resides in Edinburgh, Scotland.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-08-03

A real departure from the first book, "The Chosen" I prefer the first one because it just strikes me as more evocative work. It is really interesting however to watch Carnelian torn between the desire for a peaceful life and Osidian Nephron and watch the desire for peace (for once) actually win out over his supposed love for Osidian.

This book deals a great deal with the subjects of love, ambition and disaster. Osidian is unable to accept that he, the God-Emperor elect, has been dethroned through betrayal. Carnelian begs him to accept a life among the "barbarians" but Osidian has other plans. Namely, forging the plainsmen into an army so he can retake his throne.

An interesting novel, but I think I prefered the story of the Chosen of Osrakum to the story of Carnelian and Osidian living on the plains. No fault of the other, I simply prefered the first book, this book is still excellent!

5 out of 5 stars And it continues...........2006-04-20

Not much more I can add here that I didn't already said in my review of The Chosen. My only complaint at this point is how long I'm having to wait for the third and final book.

I see from Amazon UK that the new release date is March 2007. I have to wait another year???? It better be good. After all this delaying the third book better wrap up everything perfectly! So, Ricardo, much pressure yet?

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by Pinto.......2005-08-11

What a pleasure is to read a book so well written. Pinto continues developing the world introduced in The Chosen with a
richness of atmosphere and characters that makes one savour every sentence as if it were delicious food. The plot and characters have the depth and complexity one only finds in series like Dune or Hyperion, and one can't help but caring for all of them. I highly recommend this book and the series. I can't wait for the third installment!

    4 out of 5 stars A struggle for substance.......2003-06-17

In 2000's highly acclaimed "The Chosen", debut author Pinto chose style over substance and vision over plot. And he did so with some brilliance. "The Chosen" was, summarily put, an intelligent and convincing (if somewhat gruesome) portrayal of an oligarchic and dominant master race - "The Chosen", or "Masters" - caught up in their internal feuds and machinations, whilst around them simple humanity suffered in their name in a world somewhat reminiscent of, say, old China.

The problem with "Chosen" was, however, both simple and profound: it had little or no plot. It was a wonderful - even grand - canvas, but it hardly moved an inch.

In "The Standing Dead" - the second part of what seems to be a trilogy - Pinto has had to face this drawback by attempting to to drive the story forwards. He's done so bravely, but with less than perfect results.

Essentially, the story in "Dead" takes off where "Chosen" left off: with Pinto's protagonist Carnelian, along with his new-found lover Osidian, being held captive by what turns out to be a simple bunch of slavers. On their way to cash in on their prize, the slavers are attacked by Tribesmen from the Outer Reach (a people dominated by the Chosen and forced to proffer a number of their childern as slaves regularly, but otherwise left generally unmolested). Carnelian and Osidian are then taken by the Tribesmen to their home - the Koppie - where Carnelian becomes enamoured of the local customs, whilst Osidian becomes an increasingly dominating and debilitating force in the local community, slowly destroying their (imagined) rural peace.

The rest of the story follows these lines - Carnelian's basic goodness and Osidian's essential decrepitude being portrayed in equally stark measure - without hardly a single twist (or even an occasional surprising insight) to enliven matters.

What this means is that, in terms of plot, "Dead" is basically a one-way street. You can see what's coming, then it comes. And then it comes again. And throughout, you find yourself wondering, with increasing puzzlement, why Carnelian (or anyone else you may care about, for that matter) doesn't simply *do* something, instead of letting all hell slowly settle around them.

Given "Chosen's" weakness (style over substance, vision over plot), this is not that surprising. Whilst Pinto does try to provide a better storyline this time round, he's still struggling. He's great at painting portraits, at depicting static visions - but he's still not good at action. In fact, he doesn't seem to understand the concept all that clearly: "Dead" hardly contains a character that seems alive - that appears capable of moment of his or her own accord. To put it another way: Pinto's moulding his cast to fit his vision, instead of allowing them to embody that vision themselves. And, more strongly than in "Chosen", the vision we're talking about is ultimately one of horror: this book doesn't end on a happy note, to say the least.

That ending, by the way, reminded me of a combination of "Heart of Darkness" and just about any good modern-day horror story you might like to come up with (Stephen King's Pet Semetary, for example). And it must be said that Pinto pulls this off with considerable skill; it is in the closing chapters that his undeniable writing skills combine with his subject material and he manages to create something very memorable.

Still, a capacity for convincing and intelligent horror is, in itself, perhaps insufficient for being a great fantasy author. And since Pinto has embarked on what can only be judged as an epic fantasy, he should be judged along those lines.

In my view, in "Dead", he is yet found wanting, despite obvious and enviable talents. Perhaps the next (and final) volume will re-address this, perhaps not. Assuming that it will conclude this story, it should, in any case, answer many questions.

5 out of 5 stars extremely complex world filled with deep social systems.......2003-03-15

Masters Carnelian and the God-Emperor elect Osidian are lovers. However, the latter's enemies have slavers kidnap them. The duo is fortunate that the nomadic Ochre tribe rescue them on the dangerous Earthsky. Carnelian, who grew up outside the hedonistic capital of the Three Lands, Osrakum, adapts to the tribe's way of life and quickly becomes assimilated. On the other hand, Osidian is in a depression but also believes these wild wanderers are beneath him and fails to communicate with anyone except his lover.

As Osidian heals in mind and body, he becomes angry with those who betrayed him. He seeks vengeance and realizes this tribe is the first cannon fodder tool to succeed. Carnelian tries to talk him out of it as he enjoys his new lifestyle and just wants to live in peace. However, the charismatic Osidian begins rallying the impressionable young around his cause while Carnelian attempts to stop the rising tide.

As he did in his first book THE CHOSEN of the Stone Dance of the Chameleon trilogy, Ricardo Pinto paints an extremely complex world filled with deep social systems. The varying races and tribes seem so authentic and the Masters come across as the ruling God-like upper caste. Though it helps to read the first novel because the audience will have a greater understanding of the predicament that the lead couple face at the start, fans of violent barbaric fantasy that hides nothing will appreciate the middle endeavor.

4 out of 5 stars A Page Turner with More Adventure and History than in any Text Book.......2007-04-03

First, this is not my normal genre, but came as a highly recommended book. If one wants to learn about the immigration and exploration of the west, then one can not go wrong by reading and enjoying this wonderful history lesson in story form. As the title of the book indicates, it took a special stock of men (and women) to overcome the many obstacles that the mountains (and desert) requires of one. The book takes you on this journey from the viewpoint of the true early explorers, and adventures, to just people trying to make a better life, or escaping religious persecution. Either group provides the struggles required of all and the high adventures to get where they eventually landed.

It is hard to imagine that prior to year of 1830, that there were probably less than 5,000 non-Native Indians living in the far west. Even more so that most Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Russians, (and others) that thought the far west presented far too much danger to even attempt the crossing, and once there, not much to reward your effort. This was based on some facts as the story unfolds from the Donner Party tragedy, and Indian attacks, to continued religious persecution, and vigilante groups of early settlements. All told though, there is only greed or great opportunity that can overcome a rational repugnance of such hardships to justify the costs which to overcome man's avoidance of living in such extremes. That greed comes in the form of gold and silver for many that ultimately made the effort to expand the far west.

All in, this is a page turner with both drama, color, and interwoven events to keep the story (i.e. immigration) moving along to the far west that we know today. A wonderful and educational story indeed.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Entertaining.......2006-12-15

What a great read--fantastic story-telling of Western history. It captures the sense of adventure, danger, and especially, perseverance on the part of great men like Sutter down to the individuals rushing to the gold. It provides good lessons for all of us in what it took to build the American West. I highly recommend it!

    5 out of 5 stars match mountains.......2006-11-10

I bought this book as a gift for a fellow aficianado of Western U.S. history. It's one of the best ever published, as Mr. Stone delivers historical facts in a prose that makes it come alive. The concurrent time periods of each area's development is easy to follow, and mentally keep track of, as one enjoys the stories. It reminds the reader of just about every western movie he's ever seen!

    4 out of 5 stars a [...] mystery that is different.......2006-04-23

Like the other reviewers I also read through this book straight through and agree with their comments. I did feel uncomfortable towards the end with some of the improbable twist and turns. The one about one of the evil doers having grown up next door to Jack's sister and husband was a bit much. Otherwise the book is original and well written. I normally am uncomfortable with flashbacks, but they are seamless and brilliantly done in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Shady side of business dealings make for great reading.......2006-02-06

A well-conceived and written novel of romance, suspense and shady business dealings, "In the Shadow of Stone" introduces Jack Fontaine, a self-made gay man who is somewhat estranged from his family, except for his sister's daughter Jenna, and is a successful advertising executive who is in a rewarding but ethically-challenged relationship with one of his firm's copywriters. Jack's orderly life starts to unravel when he is summoned to the deathbed of his sister, who entrusts him with a video tape that is to be held in safekeeping for her daughter's 18th birthday. Shortly thereafter, it becomes apparent that a comment made by his lover Marc at work has resulted in their relationship being known, which threatens his job and makes him second-guess the wisdom of continuing the relationship. What follows is a painful revelation that Marc was actually sent to the firm to "bring Jack down" and, although he now insists he fell in love for real, Jack does not know whom to trust.

Definitely original and engaging story by a talented author. Much recommended, 5 stars out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book !!.......2006-02-01

This book has it all. Romance, love, mystery, deception, betrayal, redeamption, and a whole lot more. It is the story of a man who makes a pledge to his dying sister and must, through a series of unfortunate and sometimes hateful events, redeem his promise and in the process, redeem his understanding of the human spirit. Tightly and tensely written, this gripping story will not permit you to put it down until the final page. And even then, you will yearn for more. Fortunately, Mr. Kaufman has provided himself the opportunity to write a subsequent novel about the same protagonist. If he does, I will line up to buy it and read it. This is a good book. READ IT!

I LOVED this book. Right from the beginning the story grabbed me. I actually stayed up all night so I could see what happened... and it was well worth it! The characters were so well developed that after awhile they were like real people to me. Between the characters, the storyline, the suspense and emotional drama, I couldn't put the book down. I can't wait for this author's next book.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. From the very start it caught my attention and kept me going right to the very end. A wonderful first book from this author. I hope he writes more in the near future. After reading "In the Shadow of Stone," I would not hesitate to buy his next book.

    4 out of 5 stars philosopher's stone.......2005-04-20

Not as action-packed as dinosaur eggs, but it is a great read. I really enjoyed it! I loved Sarducci's death!

    3 out of 5 stars A Good Book........2004-02-28

Overall, I would say that this was a good book. However, there are a few things that bothered me.

    1. The opening sequence was, I feel, meant to mimic the opening of Raiders in an attempt at a tie-in - Maybe Indy doesn't have much luck at procuring Skull Artifacts? But unfortunately it felt more like jungle re-tread than new territory.

    2. Evidently Indiana Jones can't find anyone but Redheads to fall for. This seems to be a common thread amongst all three Authors of this series. I mean, I like a good Redhead as much as the next guy, but come on! Not to mention I felt that McCoy was trying too hard to make Alecia Dunstin an independent, free-willed type rather than a three-dimensional character.

    3. I really liked the Sarducci character and felt that he was a good solid character with plenty of background, etc. But Alistair Dunstin was cardboard at best. He was really a disappointment after waiting the entire novel to meet him. Not to mention the fact that McCoy foreshadowed him too much. You knew what he was going to do before he did.

    4. The book just ended. I can't really say that I appreciate books that just end. Even though the next book, Indiana Jones and the Dinosaur Eggs, pretty well picks up where Philosopher's Stone leaves off, the book built you up until the end and then just kind of petered out in a Deus Ex Machination. On a side note, Alistair Dunstin's last act, in an attempt at repentance, was lame at best and most definitely out of character.

As I said before, overall it is a good book. If you are an Indiana Jones fan and a fan of the books in particular, I would definitely recommend this book. It will entertain you for the few hours it takes to read it.

5 out of 5 stars Indy is back!.......2004-02-07

I've collected all of the Indy novels and am slowly going through them all, reading them in order. After the side step of Martin Caidin's two novels, the fun and excitement of the real Indy is back in this book. The opening chapter is classic Indy, obtaining (or in this case, just missing) rare antiquities. The 4th book, the Genesis Deluge, is my favorite, but this one (almost finished it) is going to rank up there near the top. McCoy's pacing is terrific, and his attention to details that really set the tone and the time period are classic Indy. The Voynich Manuscript is a great topic for an Indy novel, and McCoy's capturing of Indy's mannerisms and wry humor are indeed welcome after Caidin's characterizing Indy as a CIA operative or some other shenanigans.

    4 out of 5 stars Professor WHO?.......2003-11-08

The book was action packed and even gave me a detailed dream but honestly, the book was slow to develop. I read Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Sphinx and I finished it in 4 hours. This I finished in 19 hrs. Why? Because it lacked the thrill and adventure as to what happens next. That is why its a four star rating!

    5 out of 5 stars Should be a series.......2006-07-07

I thought this was well drawn, had a great story, great writing, and overall everything came together realy well on this book. I could see Vaughan bringing even more depth to these characters if it was a longer series. Garth Ennis made Hitman a great (sometimes just good) series, and there's no reason why Vaughan couldn't do it here. If I had to make a choice though, I'd rather he keep putting out Deus Ex Machina over this.

5 out of 5 stars Not your ordinary superhero comic, or maybe super villain in this case........2006-01-03

Vaughan and Hotz have done a great job here bringing us yet another great MAX title. This is a more realistic comic, without all the superhero speeches, and all of that, this isn't even about a superhero.

The story: A young highschool drop-out and small time crook by the name of Parker is struggling to put food on the table for his pregnant girlfriend, and to pay for his mother's medical bills. So when he finds a robe that can make him invisible as long as he holds his breath, and boots that lets him fly, he pursues the life he always wanted, costumed villainy. His first big job was stealling diamonds that are being sneaked into the U.S., from there things get a little complicated. A very well written story, probably more realistic than most of the other comics out there today, I mean Parker Robbins is really just a common man, we can all relate to him. But I can't help but feel there should be a sequel to this book, there are so many things that are left unanswered, oh well.

The kind of art by Kyle Hotz is not usually what I like, it's kind of cartoony and just doesn't really work to me. But for this storyline, I think it works really well, which really surprised me.

This is a great comic, different from many mainstream comics out there, a great alternative. A must have if you really enjoy the MAX line of comics like Alias, Punisher, or Supreme Power.

4 out of 5 stars Common man living in the Marvel Universe.......2005-04-25

There may have never been a more realistically amusing attempt at writing the common man living in the Marvel Universe. Nor has this comic company ever succeeded more in an attempt at attracting an adult audience. I'm not typically a fan of this universe, but the Hood is a character that has changed my mind over Marvel's lack of ability to write an intriguing tale without rehashing the same-ole, same-ole.

5 out of 5 stars "With great power...comes great opportunity".......2004-03-17

The Hood: Blood from Stones collects the six issue mini-series by Brian K. Vaughn (Y: The Last Man) and artist Kyle Hotz (Incredible Hulk). The Hood tells the story of Parker Robbins; a low life street thug who cheats on his pregnant girlfriend, lies to his institutionalized mother, and struggles to make any cash whatsoever. One night, Parker comes across a mysterious red cloak and a pair of boots which allow him to turn invisible when he holds his breath and walk on the air. Instead of using these newfound superpowers for the greater good, he turns to the life of a costumed super villian, and is soon wanted by the police and a ruthless crimelord who has employed three lower tier villians in Constrictor, Jack 'O Lantern, and Shocker to terminate The Hood. Vaughn's imaginitive writing keeps what could have been an otherwise dismal story pumping with action and quirky dialogue, while Hotz' art greatly carries the story along. I love Marvel's line of MAX comics, but there is something about The Hood that gives me the feeling that Vaughn was a bit restricted with his storytelling. Maybe it's just me, but as good as The Hood is, it just feels like there is something missing. That aside though, The Hood is one of the best MAX titles, and is definitely worth picking up.

4 out of 5 stars Different, but Good........2003-12-23

There is no hero here. Just a low life punk who suddenly gains superpowers. There is humor, drama, nice art, and an entertaning story. Not for kids.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Word to Live by.......2004-01-01

I was thumbing through various inspirational books and stumbled upon God's Way for Fathers. The stories, written by both well known and lesser known dads from across the country are both inspiring and heartfelt. We often think of women as being sentimental, loving and tender but here the dads do the talking and sharing and the result is tremendous. I would recommend it for anyone searching for feel good, inspiring tales about the joys and challenges faced by fathers today.

    Book Description

There's just no stopping little Willy. Determined to keep their farm going -- and to give his ailing grandfather a reason to live -- the ten-year-old boy hitches his dog, Searchlight, to the plow and harvests the whole potato crop.

Now little Willy needs five hundred dollars to pay off ten years' back taxes, or the farm will be taken away from them. Dauntless as ever, he stakes everything on one wild hope: that he and Searchlight can outrun the best dogsled racers in the country -- including the legendary Indian, Stone Fox. But the huge mountain man is every bit as intent on winning the big prize money as little Willy is. And he and his five beautiful Samoyeds haven't lost a race yet....

Based on a Rocky Mountain legend, John Reynolds Gardiner's story -- like its hero, little Willy -- has all the ingredients of a winner, right down to the unforeseen drama at the finish line.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Story I have ever Read.......2007-09-15

My son had to read this book for school and since it was short, I read it with him. I still, to this day, cry when I remember the ending of this beautiful and heart-wrenching story. One of the best children's (and parent's) books ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A must for older children who love dogs!.......2007-06-08

Little Willy and his dog, Searchlight, have a very special bond. When Willy needs to run the race of all races, Searchlight gives it his all. The two of them are up against Stone Fox, who has never lost a dog sled race! Compassion and "doing what is right" concludes this heartbreaker! The ending leads me to suggest this for ages 8 and older. It leads to a great book-talk. A wonderful family read-aloud!

Stone Fox is about a kid trying to save his grandpa's farm.. He went back inside checked his grandpa's room and he was lying there still looking at the ceiling. Doc. Smith came to the house and checked grandpa she said the he is if he wanted to, but there's a point where people give up on healthy as an ox. She said that he could live up to a hundred years old.
The nixed day Willy checked the money box. Willy found nothing he didn't no that they were broke. There was a man that came to the door and he was with the state of Wyoming. He said if you don't make payments you will loose the ranch. Little Willy wanted to help out so he went to the bank to get his college money. His grandpa said know but he disobeyed. When Willy went to town he saw a flyer that said National Dogsled Race held in Jackson Wyoming. Little Willy went to go sine up for the race entry fee was five dollars. They said that he would win. There was a man a man named Stone Fox he wins every race he's in. He is a tall man full blooded Indian. He hate white man they took his family land. He wins the races so he can by it back.

4 out of 5 stars many cliffhangers and exiting parts.......2007-04-19

This is a book that will make you not sleep at night and will be on your mind all day.It is also similar to a book called UP IN THE NORTH.This book is exiting becaos of it's cliffhangers like when a man pointed a gon at Willy and it ended the chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Stone Fox is a Must Read! .......2007-04-02

Gardiner has created a powerful story of determination and heartache in his book, Stone Fox. This book is appropriate for children in third through sixth grade and it will appeal to young boys and animal lovers. The struggles and experiences that Little Willy must go through to help his family presents a real-life connection for readers. The few black and white drawings in the book help readers to visualize the story. The action in the story builds quickly to keep readers interested. Although it may be hard to believe that an amateur ten-year-old boy could come that close to winning a dog sled race with one unexperienced dog when competing against an experienced man with a team of 5 dogs, the story provides a sense of pride and accomplishment to young readers by highlighting the character building scenarios that Willy has gone through and his determination to help his family. Additionally, while the ending is unexpected and sad, the mood is lightened by the kindness of the competitors in the race.

This book is the other version of Forbidden Love with a Married Man by Dennis Schleicher, which it is a 'must read' for all. His memoir is groundbreaking along with cutting edge, a first of its kind.

Dennis fell victim just like Brenda Stone Browder. Schleicher's book will help women realize why their husbands cheat, and how it's out of their control.

2 out of 5 stars Misses the point entirely........2006-04-19

Although this woman should be admired for how she was able to get back on track after the many things she endured she misses the point entirely. For starters, men who live "on the DL" do not want tobe discovered--in the unlikely event that a surefire or foolproof test to determine wether or not a man is on the DL were ever devised, those men in this lifestyle would find a way to dodge or evade it. Her suggestions that homosexuality and bisexuality can be cured are ludicrous at best. After having read this book my only question is "Did she write this to get back at her ex-husband?".

    5 out of 5 stars www.valderbeebeshow.com.......2006-03-05

Brenda's book is not sensational (as her husband J. L. King, On The Down Low). It is personal, reflective, cautious with a focus.

5 out of 5 stars The Missing Piece.......2005-12-31

Last May I reviewed a great book titled On The Down Low by J.L. King. In this book, King gave insider information for women to use to help protect themselves from men who secretly have sex with other men. With the increase in African-American women contracting HIV, his book was on time for a much needed wake-up call. Yet, there was an area of the lifestyle that Mr. King could not fully reveal. This area is how the spouses or girlfriends of these men handle the situation when they discover their man's secret life. As I read On The Down Low, I continually thought, "This is a man who is telling the whole world he likes to have sex with other men, but he can't admit he's gay or bisexual." With this in mind, I wondered what his now ex-wife had truly gone through.

ON THE UP AND UP by Brenda Stone Browder, J.L. King's ex-wife answered my questions about discovering your husband is heating on you with a man. As her words flowed from the page, I could feel her pain, anger, and betrayal; hear the voice telling her something was wrong; understand the self-doubt that somehow she was lacking; cheer when she realized that J.L.'s actions were is and had nothing to do with her; and rejoice when she found ove again... Along her journey, she pointed out signs to look or, the types of women these men seem to choose, and also included a survival guide for women living with men on the down low. Being so public about something so private couldn't have been easy for Mrs. Browder, but she's done an excellent job, and I'm sure ON THE UP AND UP will help thousands.
