Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book it is!!!!!!.......2007-10-04

My boy is 6 and he's so interested of castles and knights.
and this pop up book is so amazing book for kids.
My kid had a shouting whenever i read the next page
i recommand this book for boy agess 6 to 12.

5 out of 5 stars Another intricate and exciting adventure.......2007-10-03

My son received this book for his 4th birthday and has been enjoying it at different levels over the past year. At first, he loved looking for the knights, admiring the intricate pop-ups, and listening to parts of the text about knights and their castles.

Now that he is 5, he is enjoying the book at a different level, spending longer moments discovering the surprises each page has to offer, and listening to the text with a greater attention to detail.

Of course, many of our grown-up guests enjoy looking at all of our Sabuda and Reinhart books as well. They are great fun and a true wonder!

4 out of 5 stars Castle: Medieval Days and Knights.......2007-08-16

I am simply amazed that you can buy a high quality Sabuda pop-up book for such a reasonable price. These books are too nice for children who simply cannot appreciate the work that must have gone into creating them. Each one is a piece of art -- I just love them. I am convinced that eventually they will be too expensive to produce.

5 out of 5 stars Buy 2, Use 1.......2007-07-14

Fascinating Pop-up book will spark the imagination of children and adults alike. Fun facts provide a glimpse into Medieval lives and are never dry. Kyle Olman came to our school and gave our 5th graders a demonstration on creating their own pop up knight, and happens to be an extremely kind and patient teacher as well as an incredible new author/artist!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful pop-up book!.......2007-07-11

Although this is clearly a book for older children and my son is only 16 months old, he already LOVES this book! (although secretly, I think my husband possibly enjoys it even more!) We've had it for 2 months now, and he still oohs and aahs as each page is turned (the boy, not the man!). His favorite is the interactive page in the middle where pulling on the arrowed tabs bring "life" to all of the medieval workers doing their jobs. We keep the book on a high shelf out of his reach, to keep him from damaging it accidentally. He eagerly requests to see it several times a week. It's interesting to me how he's never treated the Sabuda & Reinhart pop-up books (we have 3 - "Sharks" and "Dinosaurs" are just as amazing, although very different, from this one) in the same rough manner as he does with his other "toddler" books. Somehow, he knew these books are not the same. Even at his young age, he knows he has to let Mommy or Daddy help him with the delicate pages, and he gets SO excited with all of the amazing "action"! Excellent! Wonderful gift for any child.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully produced!.......2007-10-17

This book is wonderfully produced and expertly executed. The pop-ups are detailed, and the accompanying text is very informative. Perfect for any lighthouse lover. This is not a child's pop-up, by any means. My purchase was a gift for my mom, who was very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Lighthouses.......2007-07-30

This is a beautifully crafted book. It has obviously been put together with care. The pop-ups are well done and work perfectly. The illustrations are stunning, soft and lovely. There is a well researched history about each lighthouse, even the binding and cover show that it is special. While it is not a book for a young child, older children who are interested in this subject or know any of the buildings should enjoy it. Any adult who is interested in lighthouses will definitely want this book. For a collector of pop-up books it is a wonderful addition to any collection.

Every Robert Sabuda pop-up is a marvel, but America the Beautiful is singularly remarkable for its inspired interpretation of the classic American anthem. Each page presents a magnificent pop-up featuring a line from the first (and best known) verse of "America the Beautiful." Sabuda has included the song in its entirety, featuring mini pop-ups, in a small booklet on the final page. Beginning with the Golden Gate Bridge, and ending with a spectacularly regal Statue of Liberty, Sabuda's America the Beautiful is a lovely keepsake that also serves as a patriotic primer for teaching young ones about America. --Daphne Durham

I now own every pop-up book created by Robert Sabuda. He is an artist extraordinnaire! How lucky we are to have someone of his caliber create such wonderful books. He is an interesting character. Go on-line and read his bio. You'll love him even more.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful keepsakes!.......2007-05-21

I love the pop-ups by Mr. Sabuda. This is one of his best. The kids wear it out.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book - Sabuda is a genius........2007-01-18

This was purchased for a gift for my 5-year old niece (the dinosaur one for my nephew). The pop-ups are incredible and kids and adults love them. I've shared other books of his with them, and they liked them a lot. So, now they can start a collection of their own. If you haven't seen Sabuda's work, I recommend it.

Book Description

Colorful, interactive, and fun, The White House Pop-Up Book illustrates the history and architecture of the White House with pop-up elements, die-cut images, booklets, pull-outs, photographs, models, illustrations, and more. More than 100 photographs capture the people, places, and events that are part of this famous building's past and the story of the United States.
Highlights from the book include a movable diorama of the Mall with all of the monuments; a removable map of Washington, D.C.; a gallery of all the presidents; a pop-up of an exact replica of the White House with an exact replica floorplan; the Oval Office in three dimensions; a fan that pops open to reveal portraits of the First Ladies; a standing "carousel" that reveals five rooms-the Red Room, Cross Hall, Blue Room, Green Room, and Lincoln Bedroom and an accordion of inaugural gowns worn by the First Ladies.
The White House receives an average of one million visitors annually, and there is perennial interest in the President's house. From those who have visited repeatedly to those who wish to go, this three-dimensional tour serves as a great gift, souvenir, or keepsake that will make them feel as if they're stepping into the White House every time they open the book.

4 out of 5 stars INTERESTING BOOK.......2007-07-29

It's not a real pop up book, But
it was a informed book about the
White house.

1 out of 5 stars Not a real pop-up book.......2007-06-21

I was so looking forward to unwrapping this book, and couldn't believe how disappointing it was. I'm a huge fan of pop-up books, and this is the worst one I've ever seen. There are very few pop-ups! And some of them don't even work--are hopelessly stuck after only one use. There is material in little booklets which you open (they do not "pop"), and it's hard to imagine them being less interesting or visually appealing. They're stuck willy-nilly on the pages.

I especially wanted to see the different rooms in the White House, but the way they're displayed in a very weird pull-out on the back page which wobbles as you try to open it, you can't really get a sense of them. I wanted to show this book to children in the family, but there's no way they could enjoy it.

I can't believe someone decided to publish this book.

2 out of 5 stars not enough pop-up.......2007-01-11

I bought this book for my daughter-in-law for Christmas, along with another pop-up-book. I was dissappointed because while there are slide-outs and lots of information, the only real pop-up is in the center of the book. The other pop-up book was wonderful, and maybe I'm only comparing the two, but like I said; a real dissappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Almost gives one the feeling of being there........2006-12-02

As far as Pop-Up books go;this has to rank right up there with the best.I will not bother to detail what is inside the book since that has already been done very well by the Editorial and Customer Reviews.
I have already reviewed other Pop-Up books and believe a different approach needs to be taken depending on the subject of the book. For example;"America the Beautiful" and "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Robert Sabuda could be described as delightful and fanciful in the case of "Alice" and majestically in the case of "America" and so should they be in these cases. The "White House" needs to be done in a completely different way.It requires formality, seriousness and utmost respect in the way it is handled. This has been carried off extremely well by Fischer and results in an excellent book, presentation and given the respect the subject demands and deserves.
I am surprised that no one has brought up the construction involved in this book in particular ,as well as the other two I mentioned. It takes great skill figure out how to make pop-ups work, and I am sure the printing of such intricate stuff must also be real challenging. The quality of the paper, printing and color rendering are likewise very important and well done. All that being said; these 3 books all suffer from one major weakness. One cannot, and should not, expect them to survive rough usage and they are definately not suitable for kids to handle roughly. However; a much better job and design is needed at the hinges where the spline connects to the front and back covers.I noticed there were several copies in the store where the hinges were already split.Even with care,it won't take much handling for others to split as well;it's just a matter of time and use. There is simply no way these books will stand up to use in schools or libraries ,or in fact even with normal use in the home.Applying "Scotch" brand Book Tape; along both edges of the spline will help on the outside, but that still leaves the inside hinges which are likewise too fragile and subject to cracking and spliting.
It is a shame that such an otherwise excellently constructed, albeit a difficult project ; has such a weakness and is so prone to failure.

5 out of 5 stars The best!.......2006-09-14

I have been fascinated by pop-ups since I was a kid and now collect them. I also have a love of history. This is the best pop-up I own. Fischer is a great artist, engineer and, as shown in this project, historian. This is a must have and a terrific gift.

Book Description

Filled with an array of surprises, the book features historically accurate artwork exclusively drawn by artist Chuck Fischer, who combines real photography with his own painting to create a masterpiece in each double-page spread. The spread includes pops of both house and garden, and informative booklets about each estate's house, gardens, and history.

Among the fabulous pop-ups are elaborate full-scale replicas of Biltmore and Monticello, as well as a moveable carousel showing each season in the famed Winterthur gardens. A concertina allows a see-through of the Governor's Palace at Colonial Williamsburg.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Great American Houses and Gardens.......2003-01-10

This could have been a fantastic pop-up and when I first examined it, I thought it was. Unfortunately, the pop-ups don't 'pop'; you literally have to open them. My first reaction was that the book was stiff because of the newness but it has not gotten better. My second disappointment is the lack of gardens; this is essentially the houses. If anyone wants a pop-up for the gardens, get the one about Monet's Garden; it is great.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic glimpse into a variety of houses and gardens.......2002-10-23

This was one of the more creative books I have delved into in ages. There is a wide variety of properties chosen with beautiful illustrations by Byfield that put you there for a moment. The book also has on each page a couple of little attached booklets for futher interesting facts to be had. This is a fantastic gift for yourself or someone else who enjoys traveling, art and miscellaneous facts, amongst other things.

5 out of 5 stars A STUNNING BOOK!!.......2002-10-23

This is a gorgeous and inventive book...The mixture of paintings and photographs is flawless and the choice of homes is exquisite. I've already bought 3 more copies as Christmas gifts!

Book Description

Using the latest in paper engineering, this book brings to life six of Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous buildings. Includes the Robie House in Chicago, the Charles Ennis House, Fallingwater, the Johnson's Wax administrative building and research tower, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A brief comment.......2007-08-30

Despite the earlier, very negative review by Dominic, I agree with George&M's positive review, and found this book quite enjoyable, interesting, and readable.

First of all, Dominic is wrong when he says the pop ups don't actually "pop up." The model of the Johnson Wax building actually rises up a good six inches, maybe more off the paper, hardly anything close to what he describes. Most don't go that far, but are still very enjoyable to watch how they work as you open up the book, and to look at.

And as for the fragile binding and poor book quality he cites, well, welcome to the real world of commercial publishing of art and architecture books, which has been going downhill for probably the last 20 years, as publishers struggle to maintain profitability in the face of an American public that cares little for art and architectural education. Dominic also doesn't discuss the written text, which, for a book that looks like it's designed more to entertain rather than to educate, is well done, with detailed histories of the six buildings in the book, and comments by Wright himself about how he designed the project.

Even if you don't buy it, if you're a fan of Wright's, you should at least seek it out for the sheer fun of watching the paper pop-ups of Wright's buildings. The book discusses six of Wright's most notable buildings, such as the Johnson Wax building, Fallingwater, and the Mayan style house in L.A. (unfortunately I don't recall the name of the owners). The choices of buildings are a good selection to represent the full diversity of Wright's work, which ranged from personal residences to major corporate complexes. Overall, this is an interesting and fun and informative book on Wright that should be of interest to any Wright afficionados or fans of pop-up books (the most fun books after all--check out the Kama Sutra one I saw once some time. :-)).

5 out of 5 stars Bought as a Gift - Very cool book.......2007-03-08

I bought this gift for my boyfriend who loves Wright's work. The pop-ups are really amazing. They captured several of the Frank Lloyd Wright structures perfectly. The book also has a lot of good information about the architect.

4 out of 5 stars Fun book.......2007-02-27

Not a serious architecture book by any means, but it is neat to look at and keep on your coffee table. Other reviewers seem to take it too seriously (and maybe themselves also).

5 out of 5 stars for a gift.......2007-01-10

this was purchased as a gift for my niece. she is showing an interest in architecture

5 out of 5 stars Best Gift Ever!.......2007-01-10

5 out of 5 stars A good one book.......2007-07-04

I usually buy electronic toys (laptop, pda, desktop, so on). Recently I found by Internet a pop up book, I was really curious about this. I bougth this book - Architecture Pop Up Book - It is the best way to know about ancient history, the 3D buildings are desing with details and the explanations are very friendly and interesting. Now I will save money to buy my next pop up book. I recomend this book to share with the family.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book........2007-05-27

We needed a book for a talk with school children about architecture. It was a hit with the children and adults.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book.......2007-02-23

I bought this book for my 15-year-old nephew, who wants to be an architect. He really loved this book. I thought he might think the pop-up aspect was too juvenile, but he didn't. He found it entertaining, educational, very interesting and fun. I want one for myself now.

5 out of 5 stars Architecture Pop Up Book.......2007-01-09

Beautiful book that makes a nice present. In additon to the nice and elaborate pop ups, it contains quite a bit of text; so while it's not really a book for young children, it appeals to both the child and adult in each of us.

5 out of 5 stars An inovative and imaginative Pop-Up book on an inovative and imaginative subject........2007-01-05

The more of these Pop-Up books I see; the more I'm impressed. I now own several and have written several reviews on them.
In a nutshell, this book is very impressive. First of all, just to tackle such a complicated subject requires a great deal of thought and determination. In most Pop-Up books, the author is at complete freedom to create the subject, its shape, and in whatever manner he chooses;but in the case of famous Architectural structures,he does not have such freedom. In other words, the author can't just take a pop-up technique or method and then create a form using it.With these famous Architectural masterpieces;he must do it the other way around. He must come up with the method to create the form.
As you go through the book ,you will see he employs different methods for differenrt structures.A good example of this is with "Notre Dame De Paris".He places the twin towers in a pull-out sleeve that is opened separately ,then attached to the front of the cathedral. Then you join velcro tabs to complete semicircular area behind the altas. This results in a spectacular pop-up.
That could well have been the centerpiece of the book;but hold on!
When he comes to represent a skyscraper,he chooses the Chrysler Building in New York. When you open the page,it pops up and unfolds before you. Then, you raise the upper floors which extend like a telescope. To
comlete the building, you pull out the 'hidden' stainless steel spire ,and finally unfold the mast on the top. Now ,standing before you in all its majesty is a 21" high replica of the Chrysler Building.
All together, the book has 25 pop-up replicas of some of history's most famous and impressive Architectural masterpieces. Of course; some are larger and more complicated than others; but all are impressive.
The book doesn't just give us the pop-ups ;each structure is provided with the history and details of the building.
The color, artwork, paper, printing are as good ,as I've ever seen, for this type of book. There is one shortcoming though. That is with the cover. The hinges of the cover are much too flimsy; and mine has ,with very little, but careful use; already split open. What a shame to have to "patch-up" such an otherwise fine book.

Book Description

The California Pop-Up Book is a creative exploration of the California experience through 3-D op-ups, pull-outs, booklets, and narratives. Produced jointly by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Universe Publishing on the occasion of the LACMA exhibition Made in California: Art, Image, and Identity, 1900-2000, this extraordinary book highlights the dynamic relationship between the arts and the way the Golden State has been portrayed and conceived in the popular imagination. Arranged chronologically form the Gold Rush to the Walt Disney Concert Hall (scheduled to open in 2003), this commemorative book will be a keepsake for audiences worldwide.

5 out of 5 stars Pop-up is Tops.......2007-01-11

Now I know why I love California so much - this pop-up book tells it all! Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars I have lazy eye.......2005-10-14

Even with lack of proper stereoscopic vision, due to serious lazy eye, the figures appear vivid and dimensional. The book includes a set of postcards that may be sent to taunt the less fortunate who haven't witnessed the wonders herein.

5 out of 5 stars A Novelty Worth Having.......2004-07-01

As a California historian and author of the book: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MISCELLANY, I found this California pop-up to be a charmingly fun novelty book to share when company comes over.

5 out of 5 stars The Real California - in Three Dimensions.......2001-12-03

The book looks like it might just be a decorative coffee table item, but the content belies that impression. The pop-ups are fun and attractive, but the real story is in the choice of objects and the writing. The selections speak to the myth of California that was consciously created by early explorers, developers, and movie moguls but became its own reality as people migrated to the state ready to play the roles the myth-makers created for them. In exposing the history through objects and some remarkable writing by such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carolyn See, Graham Nash, Alice Waters, Terry Gilliam, and Richard Rodriguez, the pre-mythic history and the development of a true California culture emerges...one in which the tinsel is a little tarnished around the edges, but glows as brightly as ever with its own special light.
