A deer in his canoe, a bear attack, a leg stabbed with an arrowhead--it's just another week in the life of 16-year-old Brian Robeson. In his opinion, this beats a date at Mackey's Pizza Den, a fight with a bully, and a video game at the mall any day. After having survived a plane crash and 54 days in the Canadian wilderness several years earlier, Brian can't seem to fit into "civilization." The world of high school and family life makes no sense anymore. So Brian begins to plan. It's time to return to the woods. This time, though, he makes no plans to come back home.
Gary Paulsen, the popular author of many critically acclaimed books for young people and winner of the 1997 Margaret A. Edward Award, has written another sequel to the Newbery Honor Book Hatchet. (The River and Brian's Winter were earlier sequels.) Paulsen's graphic and detailed descriptions of Brian's adventures demonstrate a deep familiarity and connection to the wilderness; and in fact the author has spent much of his life in the bush, living almost entirely off the land. Brian's experiences in nature parallel his growing independence and maturity; readers who don't feel like they "fit in" will easily relate to the young protagonist's search for identity and purity. (Ages 11 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
As millions of readers of Hatchet, The River, and Brian's Winter know, Brian Robeson survived alone in the wilderness by finding solutions to extraordinary challenges. But now that's he's back in civilization, he can't find a way to make sense of high school life. He feels disconnected, more isolated than he did alone in the North. The only answer is to return-to "go back in"-for only in the wilderness can Brian discover his true path in life, and where he belongs.

Die or not die!!!!! You'll have to read to find out.
Brian has got in an enormous mess. He has to meet a councilor and the councilor changed his live. He has Brian go back to his favorite place, the great, enormous wilderness. Going back to the wilderness helps, but he gets excitement. He gets attack by many things.

Brian's Return
I am reviewing the book Brian's Return by Gary Paulson. It takes place in the forest, on a beach, and on a river.
Going Back
Brian is back and he wants the joy of the wilderness again. So he goes to an area populated only by wildlife, but this time he's prepared. He has a-lot of equipment such as: A bow, arrows, shafts and points, a quiver, a knife, a hatchet, matches, lots of rice, seasoning bug repellent, and lots more. Things go fine; he hunts successfully, eats and reads Shakespeare. But soon he meets a man cooking something at his fire. Brian figures he is of no danger and sits down. They have a friendly conversation and the man leaves. Later Brian goes through shallow water and encounters a bear. Will the bear kill Brian? Will Brian kill the bear? What will Brian do? What will happen? The only way to find out is to read Brian's Return.
You should read this book
I really liked this book; it had plenty of details and was very well written, for example: "Brian sat quietly, taken by a peace he has not known for a long time, and let the canoe drift forward along the lily pads..." I read this book, and you should too.
The sequel to Hatchet
One other thing you should know is that this book is the sequel to Hatchet, and so therefore should not be read until Hatchet has been read. There are also other books by Gary Paulson that are sequels to Hatchet, those too are great books.
My recommendation
I highly recommend this book. It's a must read for Gary Paulson fans. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
Amazingly good!.......2007-02-12
The main plot to the story is there is this boy, who in the previous book wound up stranded in the forest, then learned to survive in those conditions after a while. In the second book he wanted to return because he missed the woods and the way it felt to be in them. He never liked life as it was at his home, giving him more the reason to return. This was probobly the best book I have ever read, books by the same author are also just as good.
Z.C.
An awsome second part!.......2007-02-10
The first book was an awsome action and adventure packed story, and every aspect of the second book was even better. In my opinion this book is greater than any book I have ever seen. The authors books are some of my favorites over any other author I have seen. I would recommend this book to anyone, most books I would get rather bored with, but this one seems to catch my intrest.
Brian's review.......2007-01-04
I liked this book because it talks about the woods and the animals around him. It talks about Brian's life in the woods.
What happens in this story is all about Brian wanting to go back to the woods and he does in the middle of the book. Caleb Brian's new friend is a retired Cop who is blind. He wants Brian too go back to the woods but Brian thinks his parents wont let him. Brian orders all this stuff so he can go back to the woods.
If you like the Brian's series you will like this book. You might want to read the ones before this one. It is a book I recommend to anyone that likes this series. It is a very good book.
Book Description
In the "Enneads," 3rd century mystic philosopher Plotinus synthesized a thousand years of accumulated Greek wisdom with his own profound mystical experiences. What is the nature of God? Of spirit? Of soul? In what fashion can God be realized? How can the validity of spiritual experiences be tested?
"Return to the One" presents Plotinus's compelling answers to such ageless questions in a refreshing modern style. Whatever your spiritual beliefs, you will find yourself challenged and stimulated by Plotinus's matchless blend of rationality and mysticism.

Lucid and Luminous.......2007-09-08
For years I've been telling friends, "You must read Plotinus--he's the single greatest mind in the Western mystical tradition." But when they pick up his great classic, the Enneads, they complain they can't understand a word! The problem is the English translations are geared for readers with an extensive knowledge of ancient Greek philosophical terminology.
I'm so grateful to Brian Hines for writing a book that makes Plotinus' profound and incredibly inspiring insights accessible to everyone. With bracing clarity and vivid examples Hines "unpacks" the Enneads, explaining the master's brilliant realizations in terms people today can easily understand.
Lucid and luminous, Return to the One is a contemporary spiritual classic.
Excellent, very readable introduction to Plotinos' rich contents .......2006-06-14
Plotinos (Latin: Plotinus) is not well known to the general public, much less than Plato in whose tradition he stands. Nevertheless Plotinos is well known in smaller circles on behalf of his enormous influence on Western mysticism, and not less as a very original philosopher. However his writings are not read very often outside the small circle of lovers. And this is understandable because what is left of them, is mostly restricted to an - although extensive - collection of loose and often smaller tractates, after adaptation bundled by his pupil Porphyrius. Due to Plotinos' influence on christian mysticism and on philosophy in its stricter sense many introductions to his work are written from those viewpoints, and so are rather christian-theological or more strictly philosophical. Too soon forgotten then is Plotinos' objective of a view of life that is to be lived, and this as well without reference to christian theology and without the modern opposition of philosophy and practice. Perhaps it might even be said that in so far the tradition of the hellenistic mystery schools was integrated or still got some place within the christian West, this mainly took place through Plotinos and the neoplatonism inspired by him.
Ofcourse it is possible to look at Plotinos in the ways described, and this even has become the norm for a long time in the past. But historically and practically it is possible to read the original Plotinos in a way which does not take those interpretations as the norm. A way which is distinct and at least as original. This is my opinion after reading Brian Hines book. However what I am not capable to do, is tracing exactly the accordance of his interpretation with Plotinos' texts or rather with the system entailed and described in those. Nevertheless I have no argument at all to suppose that Hines' interpretation is not relevant or not correct. He uses the best known sources and resources (including important secondary literature), the same as are used by other scholars. Fascinating is that Hines' interpretation delivers a view in much more accordance with the old interpretation of philosophy as part of a spiritual school of life, such as were a reality in the Classic Age. As well as with the way of psychological development which we also meet in Indian philosophies. Plotinos is a very psychological philosopher. [...]
In the first part of his book Hines gives a number of points to be attentive to in reading and interpreting Plotinos and his texts, as well as a justification of his method.
Then he summarizes the system of Plotinos in the form of chapters about aspects of his philosophy, selected and composed according to the way indicated in the system itself. First the aspects of the One and the Many, next the aspects of the way the soul goes from its descent from the One to the Many and its ascent from the Many back into the One. In this way the at first sight rather strange because rather technical philosophy of Plotinos becomes astonishingly "concrete" and actual, psychologically and spiritually profound. I recall the titles of a number of those chapters: God is the Goal, One is Overall, First is Formless, Infinity is Ineffable, Reality is a Radiation, Universe is a Unity, All is Alive, Truth is Transparent, Form is Foundation, Intelligence is Intuitive, Psyche is a Pilgrim, Descent is Debasement, Choice is Compulsion, Reason is Restricted, Image is Illusion, Suffering is Separation, Soul is the Self, Without is Within, Simplicity is Superior, Fear is a Fiction, Vision is Veracity. Very rich in content, these chapters are built around much cited and central statements and sentences from the works of Plotinos and present a clear interpretation of them in modern language within the context of modern ideas. Not just that many insights from philosophy and psychology are presented in passing but one now also sees how profound Plotinos' views are in comparison with these. And this in a way understandable to not only christians or professional philosophers but to everyone with interest in and some knowledge of modern (religious or spiritual) psychology and modern thinking about it.
Hines concludes his book with some chapters in which he elucidates some more general topics and problems, such as how to interpret the philosophy of Plotinos taken as a whole, how to interpret the relation between this neoplatonism and christianity, what might be the heritage of Plato and Plotinos and what might be the messages for us entailed in all this. That is to say for our search to find truth and regarding what we might or should be willing to invest to reach that goal.
His book ends with well described suggestions for further reading and / or study, and it comprises a good index.
Altogether this is a very valuable introduction into the original philosophy of Plotinos. Not difficult to read, nor does it reduce to meaninglessness the sometimes profound or complex questions that can be posed. On the contrary, this book is often elucidating and inspiring.
Very much recommended.
Plotinus.......2005-09-04
The Book is a must have for spiritual practitioners and seekers.
Brian clearly has connected with the mystic/theosopher, Plotinus.
Wonderful Seva Brian Hines!!! Thank You!!!
Finally a book that enlightens the reader to understand more clearly the philosophy.......2005-08-14
I am so impressed with the authors ability to open us up to explore the timeless philosophies of Plotinus. The author takes us on a wonderful mental journey that explores the vista of the soul as it leaves the One and returns with so many spiritual gifts acquired along the way. I feel a wonderful excitment about advancing through this journey instead of the usual fear of the unknown. This book has changed my expectations and the Philosophy coraborated by so many other philosophers renders this book so believable. I also enjoyed his style.
All my life I have been looking for a book like this..........2005-07-30
I love Plotinus and his work, but I had never found anybody who described it with suck simplicity and clarity. Hines must be commended for his hard work and for all the huge help that he provided for spiritual seekers. I hope to see this book translated in many languages and becoming widely known. There is so much trust in stupidity today and reading this book has been a refreshing, comforting experience, like going Home.

Slow Going.......2007-09-04
This was my first time reading any of the "Poppy" series books. Though I had heard many great reviews about the books, I was a little lost to the appeal. The story began with an interesting plot focused on the grumpy Junior and his deflated relationship with his parents and siblings but the story took a different direction when Poppy and her crew set out for her old home. The saving of her childhood home took a bit of a backseat to pages of banter and I began to lose interest. The character of Mephitis was endearing as was the relationship of Poppy and her best friend, a porcupine named Ereth.
I am a third grade teacher and though the story would probably hold the attention of a 8-10 year old, I would be hesitant to recommend the book to one of my students because of some questionable language. Though there weren't curse words, the word "freaking" was used frequently. I think with all the other bad influences in the world today, our literature may not be the best place to introduce this type of language or encourage its use. I am all for the use of cultural language, even if there is a "bad" word now and then, but to write "freaking" in a children's book just to have it appear in the dialogue didn't sit well with me.
I would only give this book a 3 star rating.
Wonderful book for a child!.......2007-02-07
My son (age 9) loves books by the author Avi. He is very descriptive and all the characters in his book have a true personality. He uses some difficult words, which I liked, because my son had to look them up in order to understand the text. The reader can definitely relate to the characters. Many of Avi's books are about animals, which my son loves.
I recommend any of Avi's books for a 4th - 6th grade student.
And as always, Amazon always sends items on time - every time....and at a reasonable price. I am a dedicated customer!
Little Mouse, Big Adventure.......2006-10-05
Avi's beloved little mouse Poppy is back in POPPY'S RETURN. Now the mother of eleven mice, Poppy must return to Gray House. Poppy's father is ill, and he has sent her sister to find her. Someone will have to save Gray House from the bulldozer looming outside.
Poppy decides to bring her son, the rebellious Ragweed Junior, along on the journey. She hopes to find common ground with the detached teenager. She can't remember being so wild as a youngster. Junior's best friend Mephitis is a skunk, and he has dyed his fur to match his smelly friend! Poppy faces her newest adventure with more uncertainty than ever.
Fans of Avi's "Poppy" series will love the latest installment. He treats the strained relationship between Poppy and Junior with the mix of humor and seriousness it deserves. Kids will love the genuine puzzlement Junior's antics cause his mother. Even better, most kids will relate to Junior's attempts to find himself, as well as his deep loyalty to Mephitis. Readers will learn the importance of looking beyond the surface of a situation, as well as dedication to friends and family.
I highly recommend this book for young readers and classrooms. Students will find a Reader's Theatre script at the end. Another bonus it that this book can be read even without prior knowledge of the series.

Poppy Returns.......2006-05-13
Reasons that I would recommend this book:
1) It was an easy book to read and delightful. This book is full of complicated relationships, you cannot stop turning the pages.
2) The book has many characters that you care about. There is a lot of love between the characters and it is expressed well.
3) There is a clear plot that is explained in the first few chapters.
4) Tons of drama throughout the book. In "Poppy Returns", the main character, Poppy is a small deer mouse goes to her parents home to find that not only is their home going to be bulldozed but that her father is gravely ill. She sets out to help them and takes her son Ragweed Jr., his friend the skunk Mephitis and their porcupine friend Ereth. We read that Poppy's parent's home does get bull dozed, her family then finds a new area for to live in that is more spacious, they are thrilled about their new home. Her father's health gets better and Poppy, Ragweed Jr., Mephitis and Ereth return home.
5) Poppy has a rough relationship with her son Ragweed Jr. Throughout the book we see that they form a new bond and develop mutual respect for each other.
I have also written a short book report:
Poppy the adorable deer mouse and her husband Rye are troubled by their son Ragweed Jr. Seems that Ragweed's going through an impossible teenager phase. Ragweed dyed his fur to look like his skunk friend Mephitis. He is sassy, rude and crude.
One day Poppy's sister Lilly comes to Poppy's home with grim news, their parents home is going to be bulldozed, also that their father Lungwort is very ill.
Poppy decides to make the journey to aid her family and takes her son Ragweed Jr. in hopes of gaining a close relationship. Ragweed insists that his skunk pal Mephitis go with them. Poppy invites her good friend a porcupine named Ereth to also go. The trip does not go as planned. It is full of adventure, rewards and high emotion.
Poppy's father gain back his health, their home does get bulldozed. They also find a new place to live. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one.
Great.......2006-03-11
The package was neat and orderly ....and the books are even better.
Thanks

The official inside story on the making of the award-winning movie trilogy
The Lord of the Rings: The Making of the Movie Trilogy is a lavishly illustrated, behind-the-scenes, definitive account of the creation of an epic film experience. Hailed by critics worldwide, part one of the movie trilogy was a box-office smash, one of the most successful films of the decade. Peter Jackson's "fierce, imaginative movie takes high-flying risks and inspires with its power and scale," wrote Newsweek. "In every way this is moviemaking on a grand scale," wrote the San Francisco Chronicle, while Time proclaimed the "grandeur, moral heft and emotional depth" of the film, which received thirteen Academy Award(R) nominations.
Including more than 300 photographs from all three films, most unique to this book, and exclusive interviews with all the cast and crew, Brian Sibley's fascinating book takes every fan inside the process of adapting J.R.R. Tolkien's masterwork for the screen. For the first time in history, three major movies were made at the same time, a triumphant and monumental undertaking that took the world by storm. Here can be found details about the hundreds of dedicated artists, craftspeople and cast and crew members who labored for years -- adding authenticity at every stage -- to bring one of the greatest stories ever told to an eager film audience. Sibley takes us inside the process of filmmaking to show us how the magic is made -- from the director, writers and actors to wardrobe, makeup, miniatures, music and digital special effects, it's all here.
"It was tiring, physically and mentally, but never dull. Three movies, one big story, and so much variety: one day shooting scenes of intimate heart-wrenching drama, the next, vast battle scenes involving hundreds of extras. Every day brought an opportunity to create something new on this enormous canvas that is The Lord of the Rings." -- Peter Jackson

Few nice pictures and that's all.......2007-01-10
I bought this book and I was interested but it really disappointed me! It doesn't give you any information neither details about the making of the movie rather than the author's babbling (honestly)! The only good thing is some nice pictures and they are not many.
lots of behind the scenes info and photos.......2006-12-10
This contains much of the behind-the-scenes information that the "special feature" of the DVD versions contain. There is significant new material, however. I enjoyed the book very much as it describes the amazing job of the team that produced the movies that we love.

If your a fan of behind the scenes stuff and movie making, this is the book for you. These movies are unlike any other, so seeing what when on during their 18 month filming, premires, etc. is great! Highly recommended!
Ten Thousand More?.......2006-03-06
I loved the movie, but what I am curious about the most is why Lord Aragon allowed the "Ghost Army" to leave when they were facing another Ten Thousand plus army as they did the first? That didn't make any sense!!!!!

Book Description
A three-volume boxed set edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic The Lord of the Rings, featuring film art on the cover. The set include The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King
"An extraordinary work--pure excitement..." --The New York Times Book Review
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, The Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth still it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell, by chance, into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.
From his fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, Sauron's power spread far and wide. He gathered all the Great Rings to him, but ever he searched far and wide for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.
On his eleventy-first birthday, Bilbo disappeared bequeathing to his young cousin, Frodo, the Ruling Ring, and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.
The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the wizard, Merry, Pippin and Sam, Gimli the Dwarf, Legolas the Elf, Boromir of Gondor, and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.

LOVELY.......2007-07-24
Wonderful set! Reading a hardcover by the original publisher is a must. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful
My review.......2006-11-08
Its divine the books are beautifully bound and reasonably priced, definately a must for Tolkien fanatics.
The bedrock of fantasy.......2005-12-28
Yes folks, this was the book (THE book--it wasn't supposed to be a trilogy originally) that started it all. The roots of modern fantasy begin here. Yes, it's also terribly formulaic writing--but it was written to be mythology. Myths and legends are generally pretty big on formula. Beneath that stiff prose, though, is the rich and complex world of Tolkien's Middle-earth...and what an amazing place it is.
Boring..............2005-12-26
Tired of all the hullaballoo surrounding Tolkien I finally purchased LOtR. I enjoy fantasy and tried to give it a fair shake but put the book down from boredom a quarter of the way through. I found myself rereading pages because my mind wasn't getting into his prose. There are better works out there, IMHO.
Everyone sings the praises of him so YOU might enjoy it, but I much prefer George Martin's series A Song of Ice and Fire.
A Timeless Literary Classic.......2005-08-15
I first read the Lord of the Rings when I was in high school. I thought it was a good story, although a bit lofty when compared to The Hobbit.
A few years later, I picked it up and read it once more. I doscovered things in its pages that I had missed the first time around. Now, I read it every year or two out of simple appreciation for Tolkien's vision and the poetic way he described it.
I highly recommend these books to anyone and everyone.
Book Description
Pioneering work on an important new approach to economics.
Book Description
This revised and updated edition of Brian Fagan's 1979 classic chronicles an archaeological history steeped in excitement, danger, and international competition, when extraordinary men and women, working in debilitating heat amidst feuding tribes and bands of thieves, made stupendous discoveries at ancient cities such as Babylon, Nineveh, and Ur. Return to Babylon tells the story of archaeological travel and excavation in Iraq--then Mesopotamia--from the time of the great Arab geographers to the 2003 devastation of the Iraq National Museum.
The excavators were sometimes brilliant linguists and gifted scholars and sometimes unscrupulous amateurs who looted sites for national museums and even used bribery or force to achieve their goals. Fagan tells of Henry Rawlinson, Jules Oppert, and Edward Hincks, decipherers of cuneiform; Claudius and Mary Rich, observers of Nineveh and Babylon; and Émile Botta and Austen Henry Layard, who revealed the Assyrian civilization to an astonished world. Here, also, are men like Hormuzd Rassam, whose illegal digging and plundering horrified local officials, and Wallis Budge, consummate smuggler of cuneiform tablets. Fagan also recounts the careers of the multi-talented administrator Gertrude Bell, a primary influence in the creation of the nation of Iraq, and of Leonard Woolley, renowned for his excavation of Sumerian civilization at Ur.
Bringing this remarkable history up to date, Fagan chronicles the development of scientific archaeology in Mesopotamia, the growing Iraqi involvement in archaeology, and the tragic events of recent years that led to the looting of the Iraq National Museum and many archaeological sites.
Customer Reviews:
famous archaeologists.......2007-05-07
With all the continuing unpleasantries in Iraq, the author and publisher of this book take us back to much earlier times. Possibly as troubled as the present, but everyone involved then has been safely dead for decades.
Fagan writes not so much about classical Mesopotamia, but of the last 2 hundred years, and the archeological efforts that have perspired. The latter is undoubtedly accurate, given the temperatures of the region and the lack of modern airconditioning to these outdoor diggers. One episode in the book relates how in 1816, a Briton named Buckingham amused himself by recording a typical summer day's temperatures. Starting at 44 degrees at dawn, 50 at 2pm and 45 at midnight! The temperate at 2pm is bad enough. But only cooling to 45 by midnight. That's amazing. As Buckingham related with British understatement, many people died of the heat. Strewth!
Other famous names of this field abound in the narrative. Like Layard, Rawlinson and others. If archaeology is your field, Fagan fills in some details about these luminaries. He gives us an idea of what it was like to do pioneering work in such an old land, under difficult conditions.
