As the first Bone trilogy comes to a conclusion, questions are answered, mysteries are revealed, and the stage is set for the brewing conflict in the valley. Jeff Smith is in top form in Bone: Eyes of the Storm. His artful balancing of humor, suspense, and pathos makes for an unforgettable reading experience. The dream sequences in this volume are inspired pieces of comics storytelling, especially the six-page "Moby Bone" sequence: the pacing, illustration, symbolism, and panel layout are close to perfect. A special addition to this collection is a set of more than 40 pages that have been retouched from the already near-perfect original comics. There are also 5 never-before-seen story pages and 9 new illustrations.

Book Description

In "Eyes of the Storm," volume three of the nine-book BONE saga, Lucius, Smiley, and Phoney survive an attack by the rat creatures and return safely to Lucius' tavern in Barrelhaven. Phoney, desperate to win a bet with Lucius, stokes the townspeople's fear of dragons and boasts that he is a professional dragonslayer. Back at the farm, Fone Bone and Thorn are troubled by strange dreams, and Gran'ma Ben's reaction to them is stranger still: She reveals long-kept secrets and warns of great danger. Thorn, Fone Bone, and Gran'ma Ben may have to leave the farm forever.

5 out of 5 stars the plot thickens.......2007-08-13

I think this was my favorite volume in the series so far. The first two were fun and entertaining, but in this one the plot becomes thicker, more complicated, and we start to see glimpses of a rich backstory behind the characters Grandma Ben and Thorn. People who liked the first two books will be sure to like this one, too.

5 out of 5 stars 1st Graphic Novel ever read.......2007-05-25

This is my 1st Graphic Novel that I have read. Jeff Smith is a great author and illustrator. The words along with the pictures tell a great story. Jeff uses many story elements in his book Eyes of the storm. His plot has several conflicts in it. He uses mainly person-against-person, with it being the Bone cousins and village people against the rat creatures. Jeff Smith uses flashbacks and foreshadowing in dreams to let Thorn know what her past was like. He uses cliff hangers to make the story more suspenseful. Amongst all of this, Jeff Smith knows how to lighten the atmosphere by putting humor in the right places. This book kept me wanting more. I can't wait to get a hold of the next volume. This will not be my last graphic novel that I read.

The Bone books are the gratest comics I have Ever read

5 out of 5 stars Eyes of the Storm.......2007-02-17

This book I just read is about a boy named Bone. Bone's friend started a cow race, and convinced everyone to bet on a cow that didn't even exist. So now they have to wash dishes at a bar to pay back what they destroyed. They have weird dreams about their past. So they spend days trying to figure out what their dreams were about. There are furry creatures in the woods trying to kill them.
Bone was the main character in the story he is the coolest and funniest in the book. There grandma reminds me of my grandma from when I was 3. She told me that there as no such thing as ghosts. I figured out that there was such thing as ghosts when I was 5. My favorite part in the story is when Bone realized that their dreams where real. If you like comic books then you will like the Bone series. This book was made to be read by kids 11 and older.

5 out of 5 stars Bone, Books 1 through 4.......2007-01-28

These books are fantastic! I have two 7yr old boys that cry if I don't read this book to them at night.

Parents:
Imagine using, I won't read to you tonight if you don't stop right now, and it works...that's how good this series is. At first I thought the book might be a little too scary for them but they were hooked and it wasn't until book 4 that I had to consider sensoring some of the language (things like "idiot"). Any book that brings kids back to the well again and again is worth purchasing.

Before the morning became evening, he has reason to weep, run, shout, curse, praise, and doubt. If you know what it means to be caught in life's storms…if you've ever ridden the roller coaster of sorrow and celebration…if you've ever wondered if God in heaven can relate to you on earth, then this book will encourage and inspire you.

1 out of 5 stars Not Helpful at All........2007-08-30

I read this book hoping it would help me feel better. It did the opposite. It is, hands down, the worst "Christian inspirational" book I have read. If you are a die-hard Christian you will get something out of this book. I am a skeptic and everything I read in this book led me further and further away from believing in God. I was so disgusted with the weak analogies and circular logic that I actually threw this book across the room.

5 out of 5 stars In The Eye of the Storm.......2007-08-09

An excellent resource for the Christian who is experiencing tough times. Max Lucado encourages and lifts you up through this book. He uses a day in the life of Jesus to illustrate how Jesus, in the form of man, coped with what Max describes as the most stressful day of His life. Max Lucado's writings always boost my spirit, and this book was no exception.

4 out of 5 stars Another Good Read by Lucado.......2007-02-25

Max Lucado continues his excellent authorship with "In the Eye of the Storm". In this title, Lucado takes one particular day in Jesus' life and how the day relates to the stresses and strains we face in life and how Jesus is there to help us during those storms.

Consistent with his other books, each chapter (there are 28 of them) contains about 3-5 pages of a theme and Lucado wraps the theme around Jesus' life and how He can guide us through the storms.

Read, enjoy, and be encouraged to know that you are not alone in your challenges! Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Advice for the storms of life.......2007-01-17

Max gives us in a very readable format advice and reassurance for our personal storms. I am using this book for a study group of Stephens ministers.

5 out of 5 stars Fillin in on Dillon.......2005-02-06

This is a great and exciting adventure book which contains many little twists along the way. You meet Sean Dillon who is a quick, scary figure whom the story revolves. I am not about to give the plot away, but Dillon plots what he plans to be a devestating attack on the English government with great intentions. He gets help along with his friends which sometimes have to make a sacrifice - of their life. This also isn't one of those boring stories which everything goes the way of the main character, which to find out more you will have to read this great thriller of a book which I really recommend to you.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best of Sean..........2003-07-25

Sean is definitely a character you will learn to love. Though ruthless, he is certainly a wonderful edition to Jack Higgins' wonderful writing. A must read!

4 out of 5 stars Here we first meet Sean Dillion - Great Book!.......2003-03-23

As the book that first exposes us to Sean Dillon, reading EYE OF THE STORM is pivitol to one's better understanding the Dillon books that follow because you get to read more about his background, experience his coldheartedness, and witness his modus operandi.

As for the audio versions, I've had the pleasure of listening to the unabridged version by Patrick Macnee and there is no better reader (or performer) around. The abridged version is OK and definitely better than the downloaded version whose quality made it sound like I was listening to the downloaded audio through string with a tin cup. Their problem seemed to be of the four levels of quality that they could download it in, only the first two were available, with a burnable quality and an MP3 quality not available.

If you're going for the audio versions, get the cassette version and avoid the download so that you can experience Macnee's delightful way of crisply going from one accent to the next.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2001-06-23

In this Jack Higgins classic which ranks as one of his very best, IRA gun-for-hire Sean Dillon is the protagonist and main character(recurring throughout several Higgins books) who is recruited by Saddam Hussein through French arms dealer Michael Aroun to assassinate the Prime Minister and War Cabinet during the Gulf War. As the plot develops, it is up to American CIA operative Martin Brosnan and head of the PM's clandestine intelligence agency Brigadier Charles Ferguson to stop Dillon when they are tipped off about the threat. Those of us that remember the real-life mortar attack on 10 Downing Street when John Major was in power are presented with a fast-paced account of what might have happened - could it have happened this way? This thought-provoking actioner is well-paced, easy to read and crams in a Clancy-esque story at less than half the length with no unnecessary subplots. A must-read winner!

5 out of 5 stars Great writing By Jack Higgins........2001-06-06

The typical character is back and better than ever. great characters and wonderful fight scenes make this a winner to read! Pulse pounding right up to the climax. Un-down-putable!

Book Description

History is colored by the nation that is recording it. In America, the Vietnam War was chronicled in the newspapers and on television. The heart breaking stories we heard were always about the war from the American viewpoint. When we are able to view historical events from perspectives other than our own, we begin to understand that the important thing isn't winning or losing, but learning and understanding. Hiep lived her life, from earliest childhood, at the center of the war. This is her story of love and loss, triumph and tragedy. It is the story of all women who have lived through a war, with only their steadfast love, hope and faith in God to give them the strength to go on living.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Canadian Reader.......2002-04-24

A Lifetime In the Eye of the Storm is a moving account of the Ngo Dinh family's determination to live and work for the freedom of their beloved country. As a woman, I am not often drawn to read books about war; however, this book is different. Although it is obviously about war, what caught my interest was the author's excellent portrayal of human emotions and the struggles of the people caught up in the long years of war in Viet Nam. At times, I was moved to tears by the tremendous losses suffered, but then I was encouraged by the steadfast faith and tenacious desire to survive and carry on with hope for the future.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, a truly informative book.......2002-04-02

A Lifetime in the Eye of the Storm provides a rare and rich view of the Ngo Dinh family. Often maligned in the American press, which worked to bring down the government of South Viet Nam, the Ngo Dinh family worked to better their country and help out their fellow freedom loving citizens.

It was quite touching that Ngo Dinh Diem cared greatly for the ethnic minority groups in Viet Nam that are being persecuted by the current communist dictators in Viet Nam.

The book details the betrayal of Ngo Dinh Diem and his brothers by both the Americans and the corrupt Vietnamese who were interested in their own power and agenda.

A great biography of an amazing family.

1 out of 5 stars To Hollywood or bust.......2002-01-06

I was surprised to learn from the publisher's blurb that this book was the story of "all (Vietnamese)women who have lived through a war". I would not have thought that President Ngo Dinh Diem's sister was a typical example of a woman in wartime Vietnam? In many ways she was surely the power behind the throne, since she was a major channel for anyone seeking to influence the President and, as such, well protected, until the fall of Saigon, from many of the disasters that that suffering country experienced.

The book itself is a disappointment. Its overblown romantic style and the numerous non-native speaker faults of syntax and vocabulary make it a dull and rather frustrating read. Hanoi translators write better English.
One has the feeling that Mr Chau has been too much influenced by the pulp fiction about "Indochine" so popular in France at the turn of the 20th century. Unfortunately not only is this book an uneasy amalgam of history and fiction but a good deal of the history also seems to owe more to Mr. Chau's imgaination than the historical facts.

5 out of 5 stars Arrange Your *Eye* Examination Soon.......1999-12-30

Storm Thorgerson is best known, of course, as the premiere album art designer with a 30-year association with Pink Floyd. If you became fond of his work because you're a PF fan, you don't want to miss this book just because Floyd art isn't the primary focus this time around. Storm's writing in Mind Over Matter was very entertaining, but in Eye of the Storm he's assumed an even more relaxed, personally revealing style. His character comes through more clearly, and he's a very engaging character indeed!

Among the book's features is an art concept that was originally intended for a Hey You 1994 concert video. He confesses that the Tree of Half Life concept didn't begin as Pink Floyd art. It tells more than his previous books about his talented associates, for example Keith Breeden (who is unfortunately now retired from the business).

The book is compelling entertainment, and it fills a gap for some of us who missed seeing his intriguing work for less famous bands than Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. My favorite at the moment is the Catherine Wheel art he selected for this book's cover.

4 out of 5 stars Much better than Lightning Strikes!.......2003-10-27

After being disappointed with Lightning Strikes i was a bit skeptical with reading Eye of the Storm. This book was much better than the first two, focusing more on Rain than her family members. Alot of people in Rain's life were removed in this book, however, a few new people came into it. I was pleasantly surprised how quickly i read the book and look forward to finishing the series.

5 out of 5 stars I'm addicted to V.C. Andrews now.......2001-12-09

I must say that I was rather fascinated with this novel. I never took the oppurtunity to read any V.C. Andrews books and am glad to have done so. I feel that Eye of the storm is the best of The
Hudson Family Series. I feel Rain is a Heroin. To be as strong and faithful no matter what card she was dealt is so inspiring. Despite all her hardships she pulled thru. This was a real page turner for me. I read it in 3 hours. I was so impressed by this that I would strongly recommend any true V.C. Andrews fan to read this particular series if they haven't already. I'm now in the process of reading The End of the Rainbow. After that i feel that there are many more V.C. Andrews novels i'll move on to reading.

3 out of 5 stars Same Ole Same Ole.......2001-10-19

Some may say that Rain was better than most of the gostwriter series, but seriously ...
The only good series the gostwriter ever wrote were the Logan, Cutler, and Orphans.
The rest ... well lets just say thats a waste of eight bucks ... if you want a book to compare to the sensational My Sweet Audrina, or Heaven go out and buy Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden or Rebecca by Daphne Dumaurier.

1 out of 5 stars Hmmmm...let's see...........2001-09-19

I'm not going to lie, but this was a guilty pleasure. But only a few parts could be considered so. When Allison told off Rain, of course. What I'm getting at is the fact that this book couldn't hold my interest long enough for me to keep reading it. At about page 200, I said, "Ahhh...I'll just put this book down and continue tomorrow." Tomorrow never came. The book is stuffed in my closet under a pile of dirty clothes that I never bothered washing. Maybe that's where it belongs - I don't know. I didn't like it. I suggest that you reread Heaven if you want REAL entertainment and REAL V.C. Andrews. Of course, it's always a cure for insomnia. I fall asleep and sleep like the dead. Heaven help me, but I can't believe I wasted eight dollars on this. I could have bought something more worthwhile. Now I'm going to crawl into a dark corner and bemoan about the fact that there's another miniseries being regurgitated by these people... "sob"

5 out of 5 stars Even Better the Second Time Around.......2007-08-28

I'm willing to bet that every fan of lesbian fiction has at least heard of this classic series by Melissa good. With that said, I won't go into detail about the characters or the story. What I will say is this series deserves its place among the best in lesbian literature and should be enjoyed by everyone. I recently read this series for the second time. Although I first read it several years ago, the characters and storyline seemed like old friends and I enjoyed visiting with them again.

Dar and Kerry are obviously based on Xena and Gabrielle. However, Good has given them lives of their own in a modern setting with new adversaries to topple. She has taken them past the bounds of television and allowed them to fully explore the potential of their relationship. Hats off to Melissa Good and the gift she has given this genre.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic thriller loaded with humor.......2007-04-09

With it's Florida locales, high-tech careers and personal drama this novel has plenty to offer any reader. Add to that Washington politics and you have an explosive story. . Plenty of intrigue and office politics and romance keep this novel a page turner.

I especially enjoyed the continued character growth of both Dar and Kerry plus those who surround them in their lives. A real feel good story whose popularity continues. Populated with endearing characters that have interesting and diverse lives

I am so glad to see this terrific story in print in a wonderfully edited edition. This is a substantial story that is ideal for vacation or a long weekend or airplane trip.

This is a novel in a series that has grown to be 7 novels and is still growing. Don't miss any of the titles in the series -

1 out of 5 stars Not up to par with previous writings.......2003-09-10

Not only is this writing not up to Missy's normally good writing, but the overall story is a dud! There is really no action as in the first two books, and her Dar character is getting just a little to imperalistist. There are much better books out there then this one to cost so much and be such a dud.

5 out of 5 stars Missy is better than Good!.......2003-01-16

Missy is the single greatest writing dynamo to come out of fan fiction, perhaps ever. She never ceases to continue to amaze and astound. I've read all of her wonderful XWP and Dar & Kerry stories online and am always left wanting more. Romance, humor, thrills...enjoy. She also wrote possibly the best first script by a fan for an established tv series ever in the Xena episode "Legacy." You have to read these Dar & Kerry ubers in order beginning with the wonderful first novel, "Tropical Storm" which poses the breathless query, "Can I ask you a personal question?" in the most charming, sweetly sexy and unforgettable manner. D&K are one of the most endearing couples you will ever come across.

5 out of 5 stars This series just gets better.......2002-03-12

Melissa Good is an accomplished screenwriter, but her series of novels about Dar and Kerry show her style developing with time. The characters and the action in this book are developed much better than the first two books and she weaves several different plots into a more complex book. Dar and Kerry face problems at work and at home. A member of the board of directors is intent on driving them both from the company; meanwhile, Kerry's father is called to answer charges before Congress and Dar has a chance to bring her parents back together. Add an attempt on Dar's life and an explosion that demolishes a hospital they are visiting in, and this book has plenty of action. Now, if Good would just write a good love scene between her stars, this book would be perfect.

Book Description

Pakistan-with its political instability, vociferous Islamic community, pressing economic and social problems, access to nuclear weapons, and proximity to Afghanistan-stands at the very center of global attention. Can General Musharraf, Pakistan's military ruler, control the forces that helped create the Taliban in Afghanistan? In this fascinating book, journalist Owen Bennett Jones looks at Pakistan's turbulent past, recounts its recent history, and assesses its future options. A new introduction brings the account fully up to date.

4 out of 5 stars Lead, kindly light... most of the times........2006-11-28

Owen Bennet Jones was BBC's correspondent in Pakistan for three years till 2001.

His book is a wonderful way to understand Pakistan. It is not a typical chronological list of facts. It is a set of nicely grouped perspectives on the issues in Pakistan's politics: the power players - army, politicians, feudal lords; the public opinion issues - Kashmir, Bomb, Bangladesh, Muhajirs; and their impact on Pakistan so far.

The reader can pick any chapter and start with it.

It is difficult to write a book about Pakistan (or India) without leaving in the reader's mind a sense of disappointment at a biased perspective. Was partition the right thing to do? Different views may emerge based on who you ask.

It is even more difficult for a British author to keep a balanced perspective on the history of the sub-continent given the influence in his own ambience. Is Winston Churchill a wise statesman or an arrogant imperialist? Different views may emerge based on where you ask.

The author seems to have struck a fine balance between multiple views.

However, in a few instances, the author disappoints:

Pakistan does feel insecure about India's intentions. The religious divide is a thin argument since India has more Muslims than Pakistan; and they are not raring to quit India. The divide stems from a public opinion that got shaped by the shameful violence during partition; that got nurtured after the partition by the army and politicians in Pakistan as a pet hate agenda for self serving reasons. Today, no politician or general in Pakistan can take a softer friendly stand towards India and survive in Pakistan. This is true to a lesser extent for politicians in India too. Feeding a public opinon for political convenience and in turn being fed by it is the vicious cycle that Pakistan has gotten into. The author misses this point and suggests that Pakistan's insecurity stems from India responding to Pakistan's invasion in 1965 by crossing the border and coming to occupy Lahore; and from India's role in liberation of Bangaldesh. This world-view befits a public relations spin master and not a political journalist.

Pakistan's view is that Mujahideens causing mass deaths in Kashmir are "freedom fighters" and not "terrorists". This view suffers from several fallacies:
(a) Pakistan's claim as homeland to the sub continent's Muslims is not valid any more. Not after 180 million in East Pakistan walked away. Not after 200 million Muslims have stayed back in India and have played a big role in India's growth.
Pakistan has lesser Muslims, 150 million, today than either India or Bangladesh.
(b) The Mujahideen are trained and equipped by the State of Pakistan. This is low intensity proxy war. Not freedom fighting. Not terrorism.
(c) The Mujaihideen are not citizens of Kashmir. They are "outsiders" coming in for a shared religion. They sincerely believe they are fighting for the noble cause of their religion. They believe religion prevails over the State. This view raises challenges to several States. In the end this may prove to be a bigger challenge to Islamic States than other States.
The author's sympathetic description of the events in Kashmir as "tribesmen crossing the border to fight for their muslim brethren" reflects one view reasonably well; but ignores an opposite view that may have a greater dosage of wisdom.

Pakistan's army, in the words of Benazir Bhutto, has a better track record in fighting its own citizens than fighting other armies. The army's response to this potential for doubt is made up of: (a) a signature tactic of proxy war - in defeat there is a cover of deniability; and in success there is glory and (b) lack of transparency on events during the war and a "spin" that could obfuscate truth. The author is willing to be a facilitator. Did Pakistan's army lose its positions in Kargil? Or, did they walk out because Nawaz Sharif ceded to pressure from the US? The author says that Indians claim Pakistan army was dislodged in 80% of the positions before Sharif met Clinton; but "neutral" observers, relying on Pakistan sources, believe that India had dislodged Pakistan in just 12 of the 132 positions implying that the army won it and politicians lost it. Neutral observers relying on Pakistan sources? There are better neutral analyses like Arthur J Tellis' book "Limited Conflicts Under the Nuclear Umbrella".

The author parrots a view he heard in Pakistan army: that Pakistan army uses tribesmen in its engagement with India because the Indian army is more afraid of the tribesmen than Pakistan's regular army. Steve Coll in "Ghost wars" has a different story. Officers in Pakistan army preferred to get posted to the Western front than the Eastern front where they need to meet the tough professional army from India.

Aside from these minor biases, the author has done a very good job in portraying Pakistan's history and the issues this young nation faces.

4 out of 5 stars An Absorbing, Readable, but Forgettable Book.......2005-08-28

I bought this book some three years ago and took it on a trip, finishing it over six days. The book is written very well, and journalist in Owen Bennet Jones certainly needs to be commended.

Jones starts the book with President Musharraf, and moves back to the 1999 coup which installed him. He then picks up some of the key issues which drive Pakistan's foreign policy: Kashmir, The Bomb, The Army, among others. His writing syle is such that you immediately fall in with him and start thinking alongside. This makes the book an easy read. His style leans more towards description than analysis. Though the analysis is there, it is more journalistic than professorial (such as Stephen Cohen's: The Idea of Pakistan). There are also some good illustrations and cartoons.

However, he also leaves out important aspects of Pakistan (this is perhaps justified considering the title of the book). For instance, the entire book is written from the perspective of an outsider or a diplomat who would like to deal the Pakistan state. There is little analysis of Pakistan's domestic policies or problems, except to the extent that these influence its foreign policies. There is little information on Pakistan's economy or social institutions. Relatively little space has been given to Islam, which is strange considering that many of Pakistan's policies are supposed to be derived from the religious nature of the State. This is unfortunate because Pakistan's future may be determined largely by how it interfaces with Islam and how its economy shapes up.

And there are very few insights. What drives Pakistan, what holds it toegether, what may make it fail, these are all dealt with from a foreign policy perspective, but in an analytical style. Though Jones does make some very good connections between events and identifies patterns, the insights are simply not there. Perhaps one has to turn to an Asian mind such as V. S. Naipaul for that. However, Naipaul is somewhat hostile to the subject, and therefore may merely end up reinforcing some stereotypes.

All in all, an enjoyable book, but one that you may not be able to hold for long in your mind.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing insight into Pakistani politics.......2003-11-16

This book is without a doubt the best ever book one can find on Pakistani politics. It covers every aspect in detail from the 1999 Coup, the Kashmir Crisis-Kargil, Democracy in Pakistan as well as other internal issues.

The author obviously through his decade long experience has got a great deal of insight knowledge from his experiences for reporting for the BBC for which he made the wise choice for publishing his thoughts in this book.

If you're a student or even a curious reader liking books on Asian or especially Pakistani related politics, then look no further than this book as it is the best one out there. I read it all in 3 days and still do repeatedly as I've used it for reference for many university related projects.

5 out of 5 stars College-level readers will find it involving.......2003-02-11

Pakistan's turbulent history and military rule is treated to a scholarly and in-depth analysis which describes many of the problems of modern Pakistan with an eye to probing their historical roots. Jones assesses regional conflict and influence within the country and provides an important, scholarly assessment of Pakistan's underlying foundations. College-level readers will find it involving.

3 out of 5 stars Amazed at the reviewers ..........2003-02-05

Do not pay attention at the other reviews of the book. It seem to me that that writer wrote this book only by watching CNN. I think I can say same about the reviewers.. Pakistan is much more, it's people and land offers much more. True, Pakistan inherited tons of problems, but this is also true that Pakistan is capable and willing to solve those issues. Just size, looted wealth, technology acquired in charity does not make nations great. This book miserably failed to reflect any light on the Tiger of Asia.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth about the Israel Palestine conflict.......2007-05-30

This is a penetrating analysis of the components of terror. The book offers a survey of the landscape of middle-eastern conflicts. It is, however, not a pedantic rendition. The author presents a complicated issue in an easily understandable form.

5 out of 5 stars Israel... island of sanity in a sea of madness.......2006-11-27

In April 2004 internationally known physicist Haim Harari was asked by a meeting of the International Advisory Board of a large multi-national corporation to present his own personal view on events in the Middle East. He spoke candidly.

Without his knowledge a copy of his remarks was leaked and posted on the Internet. It caused a worldwide sensation and was translated into more than half a dozen languages. (The article is seven pages long and can be obtained by going to the FrontPageMag website, clicking on Archives, setting the date drop-downs to March 15, 2006 and clicking on Go. The article is at the bottom of the page.)

Due to the widespread interest in the article, Prof. Harari went on to write an expanded version, which resulted in "A View from The Eye of The Storm". This is not a scholarly treatise with bibliography and footnotes (although there is a very good index), but the perceptions of a fifth-generation Israeli-born observer. Yet Harari is no ordinary observer. He is a brilliant scientist, trained in objective and precise analysis. And he is a man not only of great acumen and scruples, but a man deeply concerned about human events and the future of humankind.

Prof. Harari believes we are already into a World War with Muslim Extremists, but that a few more years may pass before everybody acknowledges this is a fact. He outlines four main elements of the present World conflict: 1, suicide murder; 2, lies; 3, money and 4, the total breakdown of law. The role of each of these elements is examined in detail in the 211 page book.

Following is Harai's eminently sensible solution to the Israeli-Palestine conflict:

"There are certain immutable facts in the Middle East. Peace can arrive only if the Palestinians except the existence of Israel. Peace can materialize only if the Palestinians have their own state - next to Israel not instead of it. The densely Jewish areas will be part of Israel; the densely Palestinian areas will be part of the Palestinian state. Israel will have an Arab minority. Many Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza will have to be abandoned. Most of Jerusalem will remain in Israel, and it will continue to be the capital city. Some heavily populated Arab neighborhoods of the greater Jerusalem area will be in the Palestinian state and may form its capitol city. A carefully planned demilitarized strategy must be developed; it will take a substantial number of years and can be lifted only by mutual consent. Descendents of Palestinian refugees will be settled in Arab countries, many of them in the Palestinian state. All Arab countries bordering with Israel will have peace agreements with it, and no unresolved disputes will remain. The borders between Israel and its Arab neighbors will be protected by some kind of fence...because no open border can survive a 20:1 income ratio."

Later in the book Harari provides a concise prescription for treating the problem of international terror. He admits "it's easy to list these things...it's far more difficult to apply them worldwide." But "it's just a matter of time until all free countries unite and recognize they are facing a life-threatening, global problem."

Read this book, and you will learn the clear-headed professor's answers - answers that he urges are "simply the only possible solutions" to the international terror of our present World War.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a book, deep, compelling, intelligent, fascinating.......2006-10-05

Haim Harari is a great internationally known theoretical physicist. He was the director of the Weizmann Institute from 1988 to 2001 and received important honors as a leading scientist, including the prestigious Harnack Medal, awarded by the Senate of the Max Planck Society in an unanimous decision.

But this book is not about Physics, its about terror and reason in the Middle East. In my opinion, it is by far the best review of terrorism ever written.

Harari is a fifth generation Israeli. His grandmother was born in Jerusalem in 1872, and so was her grandmother. So where his children and grandchildren. He writes in Chapter 1:

"For seven generations we have lived here, in the eye of the storm. We have survived more wars and terror attacks than any other nation. But now we are informed by the former French ambassador to London that we are "a shitty little country" endangering the world; at the same time we learn that the rulers of Iran want to replace our "shitty little country" by yet another Shiite country.

So writes this gifted and deep observer of the reality of the Midle East today. Every page of this book has deep and extremely intelligent observations, whose truth is undeniable. Harari's reasoning is always compelling, like that of any great scientist. He starts each one of the 32 chapters of this extraordinary book with a short citation. These themselves are little gems. For example here is the gem that starts Chapter 30: "You cannot punish a suicide murderer by [the] death penalty; You cannot bomb into the Stone Age somebody who is already there."

Indeed, the war between radical Islam and the West is waged by people yearning to go back to the past. They reject modernity above all.

Or here is the gem starting Chapter 13: " The incredible economy of China creates an entirely new "South Korea" every three years. Why can't the rest of the poor rural areas of the world do the same?"

World War III already started though many people do not realize it yet. A relatively new totalitarian movement has grown and gained roots in the Middle East, financed by Saudi Arabia, Iran and other oil-rich states. Like the totalitarian regimes of the past, whether in Mao's China , Stalin's Soviet Union, Pol Pot's Cambodia, Hitler's Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, or Tojo's Japan, the adherents of this Islamic form of fascism are prepared to kill a large part of Humanity in order to bring forth the Islamic "paradise" that is supposed to triumph in the entire World. All fascists, it seems, are megalomaniacs, and the new Islamic fascists are no different.

This book is living proof that the pen is mightier than the sword, and a potent weapon against the Islamic totalitarians of today in World War III. Just like Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, Tojo's Japan, Pol Pot's Cambodia, or Stalin's Soviet Union were defeated, ultimately reason will win over this new form of religious fascism and barbarism. World War III already started, but the victors are going to be the same ones as the victors in World War II.

This book is highly recommended. It should be read and reread by every thinking person on Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating !!!.......2005-08-31

At last an unbiased intelligent analysis of the situation in the middle east and the events that brought to that situation. A must read for anyone interested in world affairs.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2005-05-29

Haim Harari, the proverbial taxi driver, helps others to reason on mid-east events and history. PREREQUISITE: The reader is required to have at least enough sense God gave a goose. How Harari thinks this situation will be brought to a successful resolution is contrary to what he developed in the body. He feels men will suddenly defy their hundreds-of-years old track record and work this situation out either by negotiation or by the after-management of a man-made horrifying event.

He forgot this:

(Daniel 2:44) "And in the days of those kings (the ones that are ruling at the end times) the God of heaven will set up a kingdom (government) that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite;.."

The best to you Haim.

Well Onslaught will perhaps forever be Marvel's most controversial storyline. I only gave this chapter three stars because it focuses on the Hulk's side of the war with the mad mutant. Peter David tried as much as he could, to make the Hulk chapter of the Onslaught war, interesting and he mostly succeeds. The Hulk takes part in the battle, but he somewhat regards this whole affair as a waste of his time. I wonder if that's how Peter thought of it too?
