Product Description
The past year, filled with an overwhelming number of heartwrenching events, has hurled Sierra into a seemingly endless spell of writer's block. To make matters worse, she has completely lost her faith in finding true love. She has resigned herself to the belief that happy endings happen only in works of fiction―until Asha Amin, a dashingly beautiful and mysterious woman, enters her life. As the icicles around her heart begin to melt, Sierra knows she has to confront the demons of her past and come to terms with her feelings for Asha. While Sierra works on overcoming the tragedies of her past, a woman from Asha's tries desperately to keep the two of them apart. Will Sierra and Asha allow their blossoming relationship to be buried beneath an avalanche of prior betrayals? Will each realize in time that her soul's companion is the other? Or will they lose each other forever due to senseless pride? It all hangs in the balance as Sierra and Asha decide whether a season of change is worth a lifetime of possibility.

Do you like snow?.......2007-10-03
This book is set in Vail Colorado during the holidays. Lots of snow. This was a good book. Kind of predictable plot but how many ways can you tell a love story? Especially when you read as much I do?
Anyway to conquer her past and her own anxiety attacks an author must trust that the beautiful woman who shows interest in her will be more than the sum of all of that plagues her.
This book could have a sequel if it was done nicely.
Soulmates.......2007-05-21
Grab the box of Kleenex before you begin this tearjerker about a woman seeking to conquer her writer's block and allow another woman to conquer her heart.
This book will melt the coldest of hearts!.......2007-03-06
The story of Sierra and Asha is a very endearing and romantic one. I believe that everyone has a soul mate and this book plays on that belief very nicely. The question that arises for these two women is will they let past hurts keep them apart? I loved all of the characters in this book. They are people you would like to know and well in Vivian's case maybe not so much! DC writes a story that flows well from cover to cover and is enjoyable throughout. I read A Season of Change in one afternoon, I couldn't put it down. This book will stay in my collection to read again and again! A must have for any romantic!
Hot chocolate and Kleenex required.......2007-02-05
From the moment you begin reading you empathize with Sierra...she's just been through a train-wreck of a year and is now trying to gather up the pieces and move on. Sierra's publicist has convinced her to take a month-long vacation in Vail, Colorado in the middle of December. While she's bound and determined to overcome her writer's block she isn't quite as convinced that she may overcome her inhibitions of falling in love again. So when she meets Asha, Sierra isn't prepared to be swept off her feet but can't help but let her frozen heart melt. As their love begins to develop, past demons emerge in an attempt to derail them.
D.C. Elmore creates this winter wonderland of love and passion and draws you in from the first word until the last! I greatly enjoyed this love story and I think you will too!
A great book to curl up with on a cold day.......2007-01-16

Well known novelist, Sierra Stanton, is having a lousy year. During the same week that she loses her mother to cancer, she also is betrayed by her lover and her best friend. Needing to recover from these events and overcome writer's block, Sierra takes off to Vail, Colorado for a month of relaxation and recuperation. Shortly after arriving, she meets Asha, whom she is immediately attracted to. Unbeknownst to Asha, Sierra is one of her favorite authors
Asha's family is involved with running the ski lodge. They see Sierra's true qualities and encourage her relationship with Asha. Both Sierra and Asha have been hurt in previous relationships and carry some baggage. Their attraction to each other has a very strong pull and they continue to find themselves enjoying their time together. Just as Sierra is starting to let her guard down; a vicious, selfish woman from Asha's past shows up and starts stirring up trouble. Asha has to work harder to gain Sierra's trust, but in doing so they draw closer as Sierra reveals more to her about her past.
This is a really enjoyable romantic novel. The issues that both women deal with are very realistic. Elmore develops their characters so well that you will find yourself rooting for them as if they are real people. There are also other issues going on in the sidelines that make the plot seem more realistic, such as the search and rescue emergency situations that crop up. Her descriptions of the settings are also very realistic. As I read this, on a cold winter day, I felt like I was really in Vail with the ladies. I also found the love scenes to be very well written and passionate. "Season of Change" is definitely a novel that will be enjoyed!

Fear of Change.......2005-03-18
When I purchased this book it was because of fear of change. How empowering to know that I can move on and step past the fear. It is gratifying to know someone so seemingly great and strong had hard times too. I celebrate the fact that she had pain, because without it this woman could not minister in the way she does in her work. If you are facing change this is a must read. Awesome! Absolutely Awesome. I bought 3 copies for friends.

Book Description
Winner of the 2002 Phi Beta Kappa Award in Science
Mankind has recently come to the shocking realization that our ancestors survived hundreds of abrupt and severe changes to Earth's climate. In this unique travelogue, William H. Calvin takes us around the globe and back in time, showing us how such cycles of cool, crash, and burn provided the impetus for enormous increases in the intelligence and complexity of human beings—and warning us of human activities that could trigger similarly massive shifts in the planet's climate.
Customer Reviews:
disjointed? Hard for me to get through.......2007-10-13
I purchased this book on a friend's recommendation as an accessible, easy-to-read book (we both really enjoyed "Guns Germs and Steel"). However, I had a hard time following this author in his discussions as he travels. I wasn't sure of the point he was trying to make in the chapters. I applaud the author for attempting to describe his theory at a laymen's level, but I'm not sure he was successful.
A Fascinating Account of How Abrupt Climate Changes might Have Affected Human Evolution.......2007-06-17
Human evolution is one of the great detective stories of the twenty-first century. How did this species, Homo sapien sapiens, come to be? Our written record provides some details for only about the last 10,000 years, but what about the millions of years on Earth beforehand? Charles Darwin's rock-solid theory of natural selection, while attacked from the political and religious right as unable to explain the "miracle" of life in the universe without reference to God's creation, remains at the center of all explanations that take a scientific perspective on the subject. William H. Calvin, on the faculty at the University of Washington's School of Medicine, offers in "A Brain for All Seasons" a modification of Darwin's theory that is both illuminating and reasoned. He argues that while Darwin thought in terms of eons of time and slow progression across thousands of generations, some evolutionary processes might be more immediate and striking.
Specifically, Calvin asserts that the capacity and complexity of the human brain grew significantly in response to cataclysm on the Earth. Cycles of radical and abrupt climate change, warm-and-wet versus cold-and-dry, help to explain the current state of human evolution. Ancient humans were driven to adapt within a few generations to abrupt climate change, a set of cycles between ice ages and warm seasons, forcing biological as well as other changes on those who survived (and probably few did). These "whiplash" climate shifts, as Calvin calls them, meant that those most adaptable survived and others did not. One major aspect of adaptability is brain power and reasoning. While not exclusive to Calvin, other scientists have made this case effectively, "A Brain for All Seasons" offers a reasoned, accessible explanation of how humanity came to be as it is today. It also offers a cautionary note about the potential for future abrupt climate change and what it might portend for the future of humanity. Wars over land and resources appear almost a certainty, he contends. Widespread starvation and death will also result. And again, those with the most adaptability will survive.
William Calvin's analysis is erudite and thought-provoking. It is also highly entertaining. Written as a travelogue that stretches across the globe, especially Africa and the Arctic, "A Brain for All Seasons" serves as an entrée for a lay audience into the world of paleobiology. Calvin does a good job of speaking to that broad audience, but as is the case with most books that seek to communicate scientific knowledge to non-scientists this one sometimes oversimplifies and overstates the evidence. It should be read, as should all books, with a critical mind, something that I'm sure William Calvin would appreciate. Taken altogether, however, it is a useful starting point in understanding how humans evolved from the distant past.
Challenging but well worth reading.......2006-08-08
This is not an easy book to read. Calvin aims high, setting out to present a coherent new model of how repeated, abrupt climate changes may have driven the evolution of the human brain. Since science has only known about Earth's history of climatic instability for a few years and many details remain to be filled in, Calvin has taken on a major challenge. As if that were not enough, in the second half of _A Brain for All Seasons_, he presents the latest ideas about the mechanisms that may have shifted the global climate from extreme to extreme in the past and may do so in the future, and presents an insightful analysis of the risks involved in our present denial-driven do-nothing approach toward climate change.
Unfortunately, a lot of the book reads as though Calvin were thinking out loud. He tends to follow his chain of thought wherever it leads at the time, which I found quite frustrating early on. However, he eventually weaves together the many strands he's mulling over, often in an original and thought-provoking way.
If you come away from the book with a clear understanding of his two main ideas, (1) that repeating cycles of large, abrupt climate shifts have taken place over the course of human evolution and provide a convincing ratcheting mechanism for increased brain size and complexity, and (2) that we urgently need to move past the now headshakingly stupid debate about whether or not human-induced climate change is real to a pragmatic analysis of the risks looming ahead and our options for dealing with them, it's well worth a bit of frustration at his style. In the end, I found the book more than worth the effort.

A little disappointing.......2004-11-29
While the first few chapters of a Brain for All Seasons were interesting and informative, in general I found the travelogue format somewhat distracting and annoying. I could understand that it provided the author with a structural framework with which he could bring in information on various topics, but it also seemed to use up space. By the middle of the book, after reading the umpteenth lengthy quotation from someone else's work and after trying to figure out the significance of yet another unidentified photograph, I felt that Professor Calvin had needed to get something into print, and he chose this way to do it. By the last few chapters I was certain of it, because they are mostly a rehash of ice age and other climatic changes and their impact on human cultures, material one might find in one of Fagan's books. Certainly the material on the climatic impacts of the Little Ice Age can be found in the book of the same name by the latter author.
A little disappointing. I'd suggest something less chatty.
Glacial gymnastics.......2004-02-11
Among the many mysteries surrounding human evolution is the "kick start" our cognitive abilities achieved compared with the other primates. This rapid enhancement has been attributed to many causes, new tool use Calvin, whose neuroscience qualifications are impeccable, offers a fresh view. In so doing, he doesn't cease speculating on how we got to be how we are, but takes a further step in suggesting where we might be going. And how to avoid getting there. The human brain is neither an inevitable progression, nor a divine gift, he argues. It's the result of raindrops ceasing to fall on our heads. Climate, he argues, made us what we are. Equally, it may undo us.
Calvin sets the scene at the time when climate changes forced the shrinking of the forest cover in East Africa. Our barely upright ancestors, in coping with the changing environment, learned survival skills on the savannah, then spread out over the globe. During our migrations, various new climatic conditions were being established . The suture of Central America joining North and South America set new wind and current patterns around the globe. The resulting North Atlantic Current [the Gulf Stream] and the temperature and salinity exchanges in that ocean have proven a major factor in climate. Calvin examines what is known about these mechanisms and the impact of variations. The most significant new knowledge refutes the established idea that climate changes gradually. Sudden, wild "flips" of temperature, rainfall and snow cover are now seen as the norm, not as aberrations. Change isn't on the order of centuries, but in years.
Calvin's technique of presenting his ideas is as novel as his thesis. Each chapter is an "electronic seminar" with "lectures" and questions arriving for the reader's scrutiny from locations all over the globe. Calvin thus presents himself as a field investigator, relating what on-site researchers are revealing. And much, indeed, is being exposed for assessment. Records from Greenland ice and other sources indicate "chattering" patterns of weather change. These and other finds are related and discussed. And presented for the reader to ponder. If the text doesn't give you reason to pause and reflect, there are numerous striking photographs and diagrams to seize your attention. A Glossary and excellent Further Reading section complete a work of striking significance. If you delay reading this, you may find yourself having to don mittens to take it up. Read it NOW! This book is an excellent analysis of what is taking place in the world today. Dr. Munroe allows the reader to see the importance of discovering your purpose as we enter the 21st Century. For too long, those less fortunate have been left behind. Those who discover their purpose will be the leaders in the next century.

Bear Bryant's Season of Change .......2007-10-15
Bear Bryant's success was due in part to his ability to adapt when necessary. In 1971, Bryant knew that he had to make changes to his program or be left behind. Adopting the wishbone was a brilliant move by Bryant; but perhaps his greatest move was adapting to the social changes of the time. Southern football has never been the same since 1971. The author has certainly done his homework with countless interviews with players and coaches of the '71 'Bama squad. This insider's look into this historical season will be enjoyed by all 'Bama and Southern football fans.
Outstanding reflection on pivotal time in Bear Bryant's career.......2006-12-27
Mr. Briley writes an incredibly insightful book about the changing times surrounding the Bear's career. This is a must read for any Bama fan or admirer of the Bear! There are many books written about this amazing man, but none as focused on this particular year in the life of this American icon. Hats off to John David Briley and his outstanding literary efforts. I look forward to reading more works by him in the future.

Good overall info..........2005-09-12
This book has lots of great stats and other valuable information about birth in America. It's not an "entertaining" read so on the enjoyability scale it rates not so high but on the informative scale it's through the roof. A good read for prospective midwives, nurses, OB's and expectant mothers as well.

Seasons of Pleasure Book 5.......2005-08-31
Moira lives alone near the town of New Ecasia in Nordan Territory. She is a direct descendant of the first magicked ones. Moira's magick gift is that of empathy, seeing into the past, the present, and sometimes the future. Recent bouts of severe headaches show her Lord Cyric, a man with evil eyes. She prays for guidance and her answers seem to point to another man Lord Dain d'Ange, "the mad Lord Dain of Aeoli", also descended from the first magicked ones. Lord Dain is an Aviat with the wings and the eyesight of an owl. Rumors are that a surge of his dark twisted magick caused all glass, windows and pottery to be shattered in his keep, along with the death of his wife, when he found her in bed with another man.
Moira journeys to Lord Dain's keep where he refuses to see her, or even entertain her questions. She camps outside, and as winter approaches, she helps him hunt for food and they begin to talk. However, once Lord Dain hears her query about finding Lord Cyric, the man from his wife's bed, he is even more suspicious of her motives for seeking him out and avoids her again. Slowly Dain comes to know Moira, and they both succumb to their intense attraction. This begins a pattern of attraction and rejection based on Dain's insecurity and suspicions.
At this point Moira is stranded for the rest of winter at Lord Dain's keep. When Dain's twin brother Killian comes home for the winter, he too desires Moira. A menage develops, yet Dain still pushes Moira away after the heat of passion in fear of his own powers, wanting to protect her.
Moira has decisions to make about her future. Dain is a man dealing with self-doubt and a belief that no one should ever get near him. Killian is offering marriage with a home and children. In addition, Moira must complete her quest and get the answers she needs from Lord Cyric. Will Moira succeed in her quest for answers and love? Which twin will she choose?
In Seasons of Pleasure - A Change of Season, Anya Bast has written an erotic story centering around three very intriguing characters. It is a roller coaster ride that I honestly found frustrating. Dain's hot-then-cold attitude dragged on and on. I felt sorry for Moira and the angst she was put through in this story. However, several scenes of menage-a-trois were very well done. I was interested in how the characters found their answers and their true heart's desire. I sincerely hope to see a sequel about the twin brother who did not get the girl in this story.
