5 out of 5 stars Review for USMLE and Med School Exams!.......2006-12-15

This book is chock full of great 'pearls'. Written by medical school students, it explains concisely what you absolutely need to know. Broken down by subject, it allows you to review areas of weakness. Absolutely the best guide I've found so far!

5 out of 5 stars Not deep, but a great supplement.......2006-05-15

This book's style is more fun than say FirstAid and much needed break at times from the more focused BRS books. It doesn't go very deep, but covers more of the high yield information in a style most of my classmates and I have found very readable cover-to-cover.

4 out of 5 stars good explanations.......2006-03-08

If you need to understand concepts, get this book; if used after you exausted too many other sources, you may get little benefit from it. Still, it's a good book, you can use it to think "why" is that or that so and nothing is left unexplained.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Brought Medicine Into Perspective.......2005-12-06

I was initially advised to get this book by a tutor. At first, I thought it was just going to be another review book with a lot of information. But to my suprise, the information is organized on a system basis which is exactly what's on the Step 1. I really think anyone preparing for Step 1 should get this book.

Full of major errors, check the following link for the corrections to this book if you are unlucky enough to have purchased it. I hope the authors and the people who gave it the microsoft stamp of approval before being published have been fired! I am an MCSE in 2000 and 2003 with over 9 years of experience and have found this to be the lowest quality study material from Microsoft yet. [...]

1 out of 5 stars Not a good test prep.......2007-01-06

Not all Microsoft Press books are equal. This one is difficult to read, overly complicated and poorly organized. I stopped studying with this book and switched to a CDROM-based video training program, which proved much better.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Self-Paced Training Kit so far.......2006-12-04

The only reason to buy this book is to get a evaluation copy of Exchange Server 2003 software. I had Chapter 14 lessons 4 & 5 missing from the book.

1 out of 5 stars Very poor!!.......2006-08-15

I wouldn't waste your money. I am only on chapter 2 and the mistakes in here are stacking up. Spelling mistakes, incorrect information and questions that say to pick an answer from a to g with the correct answer being h make it far from the ideal book to build your confidence or knowledge.

4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2006-06-12

I've just bought the book from amazon, and first of all what I can say about it is that it's very cheap comparing if I bought it here in portugal. the price here is around 83 dollars, so I could almost buy 3 books with that money. really, buying from abroad is much more pleasant than buying in portugal... As for the book... well, better wait for it! :D

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good to start with.........2006-11-09

Good book to get you started on your essay, but the sample essays are not by the avg med school applicants

3 out of 5 stars Useful but not completely.......2006-06-29

This book has a lot of good advice but all the sample essays are from people who got accepted to Harvard Medical School. I know most of us haven't volunteered in a 3rd world country or published research papers or saved someone's life, so it would have been nice to read some essays from a non-superhero applicant. Also a little variety as to what schools they were accepted to would have been nice. They were all Harvard and other Ivy League schools. It also sounds like the authors consider those to be the "top schools" but they may or may not be depending on whether you're talking about research or primary care. Bottom line: needs more variety of example essays. But overall it was a pretty useful guide.

4 out of 5 stars A good place to start........2006-03-22

Basically, this book tells you to write about yourself. It shows some good ways to transition into the varying aspects of the essay. But, the best thing about it is that it features a background summary of each applicant. It's easy to find the ones that are most similar to you. But again, it only helps for ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Just write a thoughtful and sincere essay!.......2004-01-01

The best lesson from this book is actually the step-by-step process described in the beginning. The essays are just there for you to get an idea of how unique you can get. By following their process and getting the most of what I have learned from my own life experiences, I ended up with a great essay - something that I am proud of submitting. How did I do it? Just read and completed all of their practical exercises. Otherwise, some of the essays are inspiring and they give you some ideas that may be relevant to your application. Don't listen to the post about this book being all for Ivies. I came from a state school and I still ended up interviewing at the very top schools. What gets past the admissions is your true character and sincere expression of why you want to be a doctor.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting essays with some useful pointers.......2001-05-26

I found this book not as useful as it claims to be. The essays feature here are usually too unique to be used as "model essays". Most of these candiates are best of the best students with tons of great experiences or personal accounts. I still enjoy reading through many of these essays and the pointers the book provides. However DO NOT expect to use these essays as model for your personal statements. This is not what this book is for.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The worst!.......2007-05-31

This is without a doubt the worst 70-291 preparation guide in the entire world! I know this sounds very absolute, but you are not getting any value from this book at all. Just don't waste your money and get something else altogether.

4 out of 5 stars Good review material before test day........2007-01-05

I would recommend this book to anybody that is about to take 70-291. I would say a word of caution though about this book. It is truly intended to be a suppliment to actual training from either a interactive self-paced class like Test Out or Prep Logic. If you try to pass the 70-291 with this book alone you may run in to difficulty. Also, I would recommend exam insurance from Microsoft if your testing center allows it.

1 out of 5 stars Just Plain Worhless.......2005-10-07

If your intention is to pass the 70-291 test, don't waste your money or time on this book. It is an embarassment to the Exam Cram 2 series. It covers perhaps 60% of the test objectives in a very mediocre fashion. (In the future, I will be reading Amazon reviews *before* I buy the book!)

3 out of 5 stars This book is not for the 70-291.......2005-08-23

Other reviewers seem to have chosen the wrong book to review for some reason. I find it hard to believe that they can write a competent review on any book given the fact that they can't perform a simple search and post more than a few sentences on how they dislike a book that if read for one exam is probably not going to have a great deal to do with the other. Seems rather silly to me.

2 out of 5 stars Covers the info if you can weed through the fluff, don't use the CD.......2005-07-31

The book covers the information but does not lay it out in a form that is clear and concise. I will give you an example. The FSMO roles that DC's host can be seized if absolutely necessary, causing you to reformat the server. However it does not go into these in any reasonable detail. It skims the surface and leaves much to the imagination on what can be seized without messing things up and what can't, like the PDC role that can be seized but does not require a reformat of the original server.

Also the software that came with this book is BAD. I would say 90% of the questions are accurite and should be believed 100% however there was a question on FSMO roles like the one above that blatenly stated that if a PDC role is seized that the server must be reformatted completely. That is completely WRONG and both the Exam cram book and the microsoft references acknowledge that as being incorrect. So don't trust the sample tests from the software that comes from this book!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars You may learn something new about yourself or others........2007-07-12

Book of interesting questions. I got this because I thought I'd enjoy answering the questions, and getting to know myself even better. Don't you like it when someone asks you a thought provoking question, and you know that they really wanna know your answer? This would be a fun book to use with company or your friends or family. (Course, there may be some questions that would be better left unanswered from some people.) It would also make for a good coffee table book.

Some of these questions I'm sure you've never thought of, or how you'd answer them. The back cover of the book says "Define your boundaries". I know people, who have no idea what their boundaries are or if they even have any. Some questions are fun, some are trivial, and some are more serious. Some will take longer to answer than others.

I think this could also be good excercises for writers, as a writing prompts.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2007-02-09

This book has sparked some very interesting conversations with my friends.
Thanks for the ideas.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-02-06

The title of this book is misleading. I expected the book to be about hypotethetical situations where the major question would be "how far will you go?" Unfortunately the book is a bunch of random questions, most of them uninteresting, but several of them thought-provoking. It's good for a laugh but don't expect to have any deep conversations over this thing. I got it as a present but I wouldn't spend any money on it.

4 out of 5 stars This book is great in getting to know friends........2007-01-07

My friends and I had a girls night out and I decided to whip this book and the other "If" book out. Two hours and a few tears later we know more about each other than we did the years that we've known each other. I would recommend it to anybody, not just for social situations and in getting to know others but to get to know yourself better too, your limits, strengths, and weaknesses.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for company........2004-08-19

I really enjoy this book for it's ability to start group conversations around more than the latest movie you saw or plans for next week.

This book has tons of very different, thought provoking questions varying in depth, but really can stimulate good conversations, or simply getting to know people better. Generally testing the limits of morality, and personal views of what boudries can and can't be crossed, it makes for interesting discussion, and you will often find yourself getting way off track as your conversations take surprising turns from the original questions.

A terrific end table book, because it's impossible for guests not to pick it up and start asking away.

Having just returned from France after World War I with a medal of honor and serious shell shock, Inspector Ian Rutledge struggles to settle back into his duties at Scotland Yard. When, despite his tenuous condition, an envious supervisor assigns him to a traumatic case involving the murder of an army colonel and a young captain as the prime suspect, Rutledge must gather all of his strength to not only solve the case, but fight the town people's prejudice against military personnel. To make matters worse, the prime witness is another veteran--on the brink of insanity--scorned by the villagers for what they perceive to have been less than honorable conduct during his tour of duty.

Book Description

The Great War has been won—but victory has its price. The year is 1919, and Ian Rutledge has returned to London to resume his position as Scotland Yard inspector, bringing nightmares and ghosts home with him from the French battlefields. Tormented and suffering from shell shock, he is immediately plunged into the affair of a popular colonel believed murdered by a decorated war hero—a case that is a personal and political minefield that could destroy Rutledge's career and what remains of his sanity.

4 out of 5 stars Passed the test!.......2007-01-28

All I need to get me thru airports and business travel is a comfortable paperback, preferably a mystery. This one did the trick! It was not the heavy tome of a P. D. James or Elizabeth George, all of whom I have read, but it did elicit the English dynamic as does Deborah Crombie. Two American writers who give us a fairly short procedural to figure out.

I must admit the solution to this mystery came out of the blue; perhaps I am critical because I just never figured out who it would be - in other words I didnt have a clue!!!! :D

Hamish as a sidekick (conscience) is a different ploy. But I liked Inspector Ian Rutledge and I hope he grows as I continue to read this series. Picked up Charles Todd on these review boards - am so glad I did.
I never even suspected the killer; a plus for me even tho it was a bruise to my ego!!!!

1 out of 5 stars sloppy plot ruins a decent premise.......2007-01-11

I have always relied heavily on the recommendations of other readers here at amazon.com, but this book shows me that I must be more careful in the future. Apparently I expect considerably more from mysteries than other reviewers here.

I had high hopes at the outset but very soon the book devolved into a messy muddle with far too many loose ends that were never tied up. I expect that if a question is introduced, it will at some time be answered; either answers were never given or the answers were so implausible, I lost faith in the author and had lost interest in the outcome of the story. Rutledge should be a compelling and fascinating character but instead falls flat for me. Hamish is nothing more than a substitute for a sidekick with a quaint accent. Most of the characters are cardboard cut-outs and all the female characters are indistinguishable and interchangeable. Contrary to what the other reviewers report, I found the background info about the war and the time period to be superficial at best.

My advice? Read Pat Barker for a masterful handling of the period, situations, and people. Read Agatha Christie for airtight plotting and Dorothy Sayers for delightful writing.

I find the fact that so many readers and reviewers rave about Charles Todd's books disturbing. I suspect the publisher's marketing jockey decided this book fit the right profile for some target audience and painted it with such praise as to fool us into mistaking it for good writing. I won't be fooled again.

2 out of 5 stars A Test of Patience.......2007-01-11

By the time the killer was revealed in "A Test of Wills," Charles Todd's debut mystery with shell-shocked Inspector Ian Rutledge in charge, I had pretty much stopped caring "whodunit." The identity is indeed a suprise, and a good one at that, but I found getting there an extremely hard slog. Perhaps it's the polite Edwardian sensibility of the characters, perhaps Todd just isn't that skilled a writer; but the pace is glacial, and the presence of Hamish MacLeod, the ghost in Rutledge's head, while initially a unique plot device, for me quickly became a tiresome intrusion. And Todd doesn't quite, psychologically speaking, blow the lid off of British repression as much as he and his publicity machine would have us believe. More people than not have flipped over this mystery series, however, so you might give it a shot. But it's far from the taut, crackling good yarns of a Ruth Rendell or a P.D. James. I'd even reread an old Agatha Christie before continuing with the Rutledge mysteries.

3 out of 5 stars Fair cozy mystery.......2006-12-18

WWI, demons still haunting, and then a typical unremarkable English mystery. I did not unfortunately find this to be the outstanding mystery the reviewers did. I'm afraid I can't quite fathom how it was named one of this century's 100 favorite mysteries. Well-written, but overall not too compelling, and the revelation of the murderer at the end was lackluster and lacked any excitement imho.

4 out of 5 stars Many of us have our own Hamish.......2006-06-14

This is the firs in a series of Inspector Ian Rutledge Mysteries. It does not take us long to know the man and the burden he carries. It is this side of him and the descriptions of the world after the Great War that adds a unique value to the writing and our lives also.

A week ago headstrong Colonel Harris was unceremoniously dispatched. All signs point to the dispatcher being a war hero with friends in high places. Who ever takes the case needs to be expendable. Rutledge's superior Bowls suspected Rutledge's secret and decided he would make the perfect scapegoat.

It is interesting as the story unfolds we see mysteries within mysteries, maybe a few red herrings and many unwell people that can usually be detected by Rutledge but not always. As there is a race with time Rutledge's trying to regain his uncanny detective skills we also but figure out who did the deed and who. To some the answer will be obvious to others it will feel that he pulled a clue out of the closet at the last moment. In any case you will be intrigued to the conclusion.

1 out of 5 stars Skewing the rating.......2005-12-28

I think it's unfair that the author can submit comments and give herself a 5 star rating (twice!). She is just trying to skew the customer review rating.

1 out of 5 stars This is not the book for 70-296.......2005-06-29

I agree with all other reader/user reviews this is not the book needed to brush up for the 296.

I have experience with all related materials, and this book hits a 0 with me.

Try using the newest Transcender, and Microsoft readiness kit. The testing material with the MS Press book is more geared for this test. This book servers nothing in planning for the test.

1 out of 5 stars This exam cram validates whu I avoid 'study aids'.......2004-12-10

Generally I avoid using these 'exam preparation aids'.
However in an attempt to save time and possibly money I bought this Exam Cram 2 'aid' for exam 70-296. I already had the Microsoft Press 70-292/70-296 self paced kit as my primary exam prep material . This I had already reviewed fairly thoroughly.

Based on that review I sat and passed exam 70-292 with over 850 without any additional "exam prep" aid.

However for exam 20-96 I bought this exam cram for 70-296 and used it for my final preparations. After scoring 96% on the simulations I took the real exam and failed: My first exam failure in over 20 attempts (since taking my orginal MCSE exams on Windows NT 3.51)

After that experience, I am going back to basics and recommend that everyone does the same :

Focus on studying the material and practising all the recommended labs. Review additional materials such as Q articles, Technet or Resource kits where needed to fully understand the technology and concepts.

Avoid throwing away money on these quick fixes and resulting exam re-sits.

1 out of 5 stars Warning! This book is awful!.......2004-08-07

Worst coverage of any book I've ever used. I'm a big fan of the Mike Myers Passport books but I guess they don't make a 70-296 book and a colleague recommended Exam Cram. Don't waste your time or money on this one. I don't know if all Exam Cram books are as bad as this one, this was the first I ever purchased. Maybe it was just this author?? I also bought the Microsoft Press 70-296 book. Much better coverage and a far more knowledgeable author.

1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment. Not the book for the 70-296.......2004-07-09

As a technical trainer with over 16 years of experience under my belt, I know a thing or two about proper training. When searching for a tool to train my MCSE 2003 students, I had high expectations for this book. I've used Exam Cram many times in the past and have even been pleased with the progress of Exam Cram 2. However, this book completely disappointed me. It's evident that Schmied hasn't even taken the time to sit for the exam himself. His gross misjudgments and oversights are too obvious and profound to be ignored. My greatest hope at this point is the Que can salvage this title with a second author rewrite or additional edit. I certainly won't be recommending this book to my students. Shame on you, Will Schmied.

Book Description

MCSA/MCSE Exam 70-292 Study Guide & DVD Training System: Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment for an MCSA Certified on Windows 2000 is a one-of-a-kind integration of text, DVD-quality instructor led training, and Web-based exam simulation and remediation. This system gives you 100% coverage of the official Microsoft 70-292 exam objectives plus test preparation software for the edge you need to pass the exam on your first try.

In June, 2003 Microsoft will launch beta exams for the Windows Server 2003 certification line. Exams will likely go live the following August and September. This launch is a comprehensive revamping of the MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Enginner) track with all new core exams and all new electives. In addition, the MCSA (Microsoft Certified System Administrator) certification will expand its program to include an additional upgrade exam for MCSAs wanting to become MCSEs.

The launch of this new certification track means that all current MCSEs, representing an installed base of approximately 200,000 (source: MCP Magazine) will need to recertify under Windows Server 2003. In addition, any MCP looking to become an MCSE--estimates are about 1.2 million (source: MCP Magazine)--will also have to continue their certifications under the new program.

Many industry experts expect the Windows 2003 certification, and product line as well, to be a more popular track since many organziations are still using NT and plan to skip 2000 and go directly to 2003.

* DVD Provides a "Virtual Classroom": Get the benefits of instructor led training at a fraction of the cost and hassle.
* Guaranteed Coverage of All Exam Objectives: If the topic is listed in Microsoft's Exam 70-292 objectives, it is covered here.
* Fully Integrated Learning: This system includes a study guide, DVD training and Web-based practice exams.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT COUNT ON THIS BOOK FOR PASSING THE EXAM.......2007-01-26

This book is good to become more knowledgeable on all topics, but the material certainly doesn't match even the style of questions on the exam.

Doesn't go into enough detail on the subjects.

1 out of 5 stars Outdated Material--Seek other Study Materials.......2006-08-17

I had purchased this book in 2004 with the intentions of completing the exam at that time. As most IT pros know, the best laid plans are often foiled and I was unable to really start reviewing the material until earlier in the year. As much as I like the "big happy friendly letters" and writing style of this book, you'll be left lacking. Read the book cover to cover...doing the labs...the practice exams and have successfully passed the exam. Flat out IT WONT DO IT! Get another book!

Luckily, I checked the previous reviews and made a decision to invest in the Microsoft Upgrade book ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0735619719/sr=1-1/qid=1155760374/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-7126449-1861536?ie=UTF8&s=books ) as well as a set of Transcender prep exams.

This book will no longer prepare you for the depth of 70-292 and as a matter of fact, it may cover as little as 30% of the exams content. It's great for a light casual overview but just doesn't cover the following subjects deeply enough:
1, Security Infrastructure, Certificate Infrastructure, Troubleshooting
2, Detailed DNS, extensive command line review
3, GPO Policy, Automating Server and TS management, Priveleges
4, Server recovery procedures, ASR, DC recovery, WSUS Recovery

If you want to pass this exam and move on to 70-296, get the Dan Holmes and Orin Thomas Microsoft Self Paced Training Kit as well as set of Transcenders. The Microsoft Book is not as dry as you'd expect and covers roughly 80% of the material...regretably, there isn't anything out there that will cover it %100.

Good luck to you all

4 out of 5 stars Better than average!.......2005-12-15

This book has a few typos and a few factual errors, but that seems to be unavoidable with books of this type. It is better than most that I have read. It is a valuable resource.

2 out of 5 stars 70-292 has changed, and this book won't help.......2005-10-01

Just took 70-292 today. The exam has changed considerably since this book was written. According to sources on MCSA/MCSE forums, the exam has been rewritten as of December 2004. While it covers the same objectives, the focus is very different. No book written before December 2004 will prepare you enough for this exam.

Be prepared to write off your exam costs the first time you take it, as you'll probably be sitting for a retake.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality, not a serious preparation for exam.......2005-09-29

First of all, this book has plenty of mistakes among the self test questions. None of these questions or similar questions are asked at the exam and the dvd is useless, showing a trainer reading down the main lines of the chapters.
It was the first time I bought a Syngress book and the first time I did not pass a Microsoft exam. I'll go back to Microsoft Press.

Book Description

The 70-284 Exam Cram 2 covers what readers need to know to pass the exam - a popular elective for the MCSA (2000 and 2003) and MCSE (2000 and 2003) programs as well as 1 of 2 Core Messaging exams for the new MCSE 2003 Messaging Specialist program. The exam measures readers' ability to implement, manage, and troubleshoot an Exchange Server 2003 organization.

This book is the ideal refresher for readers who are familiar with the exam material or for readers who are in need of more in-depth study material it is the ultimate complement guide for larger training guides, instructor-led classes, and/or CBT training.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Far Too Basic.......2006-08-30

Other Exam Cram books are pretty good, but this book is the exception. It is far too general and seems copied from help files. The index is limited, e.g. only one reference for global catalog, and the over author's knowledge seemed questionable when he documents requirements for a global catalog and a domain controller (page 17) and fails to realize a global catalog is a domain controller.

The quiz questions are far too generic and simplistic, e.g. what tool do you use to enable mailboxes? On the real MCSE exam, they delve into infrastructure design including routing groups vs. Active Directory site, and far reaching questions.

I couldn't really recommend this book, especially after being spoiled by official Microsoft material, such the one by Orin Thomas (ISBN 0-7356-2136-5).

4 out of 5 stars not bad if you want to simply pass the exam.......2006-05-19

This was the only book I read before taking Exam 70-284 to become MCSA: Messaging 2003 certified, and I scored an 850. The book covers the essentials that you _need_ to know, and it was helpful to go through the scenarios and actually play with the server in a Virtual PC session.

Beefs:
* not enough exam questions. This book comes with end of chapter, then end of text questions, which are at least as difficult as the exam will be -- so you better answer them correct most of the time. The CD only includes 60 questions, it would have been helpful to have more, however you can give PrepLogic money and they will give you more practice exams.
* Not enough emphasis on routing; the exam I wrote had 6 out of 30 questions on this topic.
* numerous factually incorrect situations in the text: sometimes as simple as the proof-readers missing the change from Windows 2000 -> 2003 (DOH).

All in all if you just want to pass the exam and buy just one book, get this one. If you really want to learn the software inside and out, don't count on this book as your sole source.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice prep guide.......2005-08-10

ExamCram books have gotten a well-deserved reputation for being lightweight and insufficient as a primary study guide. This book is an exception to that rule, however; it is much thicker (almost 500 pages) than most in its series and more comprehensive. I attribute much of that to co-author Orin Thomas, who also co-authored the Microsoft 70-292/70-296 and 70-299 Training Kits, two of the best study guides I've used yet.

This book has well-defined chapters, ~10 practice questions at the end of each chapter, two 60-question practice exams at the back of the book and a third more-detailed practice exam on CD. All practice questions have detailed explanations of why the right answer is right and why the wrong answers are wrong.

I highly recommend this book for the 70-284 exam. Don't let the fact that it's an ExamCram book scare you away, as this is a big cut above the rest of the books in that series.

5 out of 5 stars Good Preparation for the Exam.......2004-05-27

This book covers, in condensed format, the material tested on the Exchange 2003 exam. I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who had no experience with Exchange 2003. All books in the Cram series are for people who either have other study materials and need some sort of summary document, or for people that have extensive experience with the actual product. In my own case I had experience with Exchange 2000 and had read a few of the Exchange 2003 documents available on technet, so this guide was perfect for my preparation.

I did some research into the competition, it is interesting to note that one of the authors of this book Schmied also wrote the competing Sybex book on Exchange 2003 exam (ISBN: 0782143385). Also interesting is that one of the technical editors on this title, Willis wrote the offering from Microsoft on the Exchange 2003 exam (ISBN: 0735618992).

The accompanying CD-ROM full of practice questions are helpful in preparing for this exam. I recommend that if you do have some experience with Exchange 2003 (or have significant Exchange 2000 experience) you'll find this book pretty useful. If you are coming to this topic unprepared, you may have some success with other more indepth titles that aren't "Crams", but even with longer books you are going to struggle on test day.
