This is an excellent book and CD to acquaint beginners with many American idioms. The way it is put together so coherently in short stories makes it simple to learn but at the same time efficient. The CD is also very well done. Even advanced students of English as a second language can find something to learn here.

I bought this book for my girlfriend in Panama and this book has been very helpful. She knew some basic English but now is speaking English better and knows more words. She really likes the CD which she listens to in her car.

I can recommend Speak English Like an American to you. It is a very good way to learn important and useful American English idioms and expressions. I like the fact that the idioms are used in a story, then you get another example in a sentence, and then definitions in Spanish. There are good exercises also. This is a very interesting way how to study the language. I am using some of these expressions at work and people at my office are saying, "Oh Juanita, your English is improving!"

There is no such thing as "standard Spanish slang." Each Spanish-speaking country has its own vocabulary, although some of it may be shared with other countries.
Diccionario de Jergas de Habla Hispana's slang terms are classified by country and enriched with sample sentences, with a section that lists "shared" terms, a section with comparative examples of sentences with the slang typical of each country as well as a section with slang curiosities that demonstrate the subtle (and blatant) differences in usage depending on the country. There is a section on the USA's Spanglish in addition to those of Spain and Spanish-speaking Latin American countries.
In addition to slang terms, the Latin American dictionaries include subsections highlighting non-Spanish origin vocabulary used in everyday Spanish (from indigenous languages Taino, Nahuatl, Aymara and Quechua) as well as Americanisms. A Spanish slang dictionary for people who are fluent in Spanish or who are advanced students of the language.

I have used (and love) the website that accompanies this book - www.jergasdehablahispana.org - I love that it's organized by country, but you have to click on each letter over and over. Great information, but too much clicking. So...the wonderful solution is this book. I, personally, love the way this is organized. I love having a portable version of the website. And as far as thoroughness, this wins hands down! I have not seen another source in print or online that offers such an extensive collection of Spanish slang and colloquialisms. As an interpreter this ranks as one of my favorite resources.
Orden alfabético único en lugar del agrupamiento por países.......2007-02-12
Soy interprete profesional y traductor y he adquirido este libro para agregar vocablos de jerga a mi tarea habitual en las cortes e institutos policiales y de detención.
El ordenamiento de vocablos por países NO me resulta práctico; se hace engorroso buscar las expresiones ordenadas por país ante una situación de emergencia y tal cosa no es práctica dado que usualmente el mismo término es utilizado por varios países.
Preferiria que la autora hubiese agrupado TODOS los terminos en UN solo ordenamiento, y que - si le interesase aportar datos originarios de cada término - lo hubiese aclarado al lado de cada uno, lo cual usualmente es poco relevante para la tarea profesional de interpretación o traducción.
En síntesis, como libro de consulta profesional resulta poco útil porque su diseño ha sido imaginado con un criterio de clasificacion erróneo.
El contenido específico del libro tampoco es completo; me hubiese gustado que la autora se tomase el trabajo de investigar un poco más algunas expresiones que suelen tener varios significados.

Wow! This book is a TREASURE! Beautifully written and meticulously researched, it is far and away the most useful of all Spanish slang dictionaries. I disagree that it is only useful to fluent speakers of Spanish or advanced students -- it is also an essential tool for Spanish learners who listen to popular Spanish-language music, those who have native Spanish-speaking friends, ESL teachers, translators (to and from Spanish), Spanish instructors; in short, to anyone interested in the language, from academics to lovers of word play.

Trying to understand people the right way in every country in every situation is quite difficult.
Roxana's extensive job was done after 9 years of research work, and will never be finished.
The dynamic behavior of human habits is also reflected in their language, and this dynamism is many times more frequent when slang is the matter.This book is for everybody: simple, well explained and plain of examples which make the reader fully understand the meaning of almost all uses of each ord.

Tratar de entender a la gente en la manera correcta en cualquier país y en cualquier situación es bastante difícil.
El extenso trabajo de Roxana fue realizado después de 9 años de investigación y nunca va a ser finalizado.
El comportamiento dinámico de los hábitos humanos se refleja en su lenguaje, y ese dinamismo es muchas veces más frecuente cuando de jergas se trata.
Este libro es para todos: simple, bien explicado y lleno de ejemplos que hacen que el lector comprenda completeamente el significado de casi todos los usos de cada palabra.

Por décadas, los evangélicos se diferenciaron de los católicos latinoamericanos no sólo por su hábito de leer la Biblia fervientemente, sino también por la Biblia que leyeron: no pudo ser ni más ni menos que la venerable Reina Valera.
A partir de los años ochenta, varias versiones nuevas comenzaron a surgir, en algunos casos editadas para ambos públicos que amaban la Biblia: el evangélico *y* el católico.

This book attempts to cover too much ground, throws over too wide a net, and catches all kind of fish. Some are dolphins that shouldn't have been killed by this compilation, some are fish that should have never been picked out of the water. Either Hispanic America deserves a better contemporary anthology, or just better writers.

This book looks at what it is like to be bilingual from the child's perspective. We hear too much about immigration issues and we sometimes forget what it is like for the child- legal or illegal. Wonderful story that I plan to usewith my students at the start of the new year.
